I asked Greg berhalter about the performance of the central strikers and if any thought had been given to geo playing their course to arena. Okay, herc is Greg berhalter correct then to discard the false 9 option ahead of this game against Iran because that seems like what he's doing there. Yeah, and Federer is the false 9 option. That is the false 9 option. He's more a he may well be a false 9. But he's more of a true 9 than a politic way. Is he raina? And you know what the point is here, right? Get all your best attackers on the field. That's the idea behind not using a sergeant ahaji or a Jesus. You're trying to say he's not showing his hand. That's what you're trying to go for. No, I'm just wondering, do you think it's the correct move for him not to not play a false 9 in this game? Yes. Okay. Why? Why? Yeah. Because what I Iran has shown me is there a team that's very physical. They're very intense. You could have a combination of those two 9s. You can have a 9 with movement pace and you could also have a 9 that's going to do well in a physical battle because I think this would be a very physical game. Greg ward holders are already talking about matching the emotion. Imagine the intensity. I saw Iran play versus wells. Wells, a Welsh team that beat up physically the United States men's national team in the second half of the first game in the World Cup. When I saw that, when I saw how they kicked them in the mouth when I saw how they played with that intensity with that heart with that grit, I knew the United States national was in store for a battle. So I would go with something a little bit more refined on the physical front. One, and also capable of having speed and intelligence to break that line because they will push up, they will give you opportunities. Real quick. Are you saying it's a bad idea overall or just for the saran game, like would you think a false 9, a politic there could work for this team and maybe a different matchup? Or are you just saying, hold on, false and I could actually work in this matchup at some point in the game. Okay. Because there may be a scenario in this game where it presents itself because of that line. Where it presents itself because of the spaces that are being afforded to you and you notice those spaces being afforded to you. You could very well go into a way and a 9 position or a Christian plastic in the 9 position because you think that they can get ambient that defensive line and it could be acres of space for them to take advantage of. That could be an option, yes, but I don't think you go into it starting thinking I need a false 9. Yeah. I think it's worth stating the obvious here. Any manager in the day before press conference asked a direct question like that. He's not going to tip his hand. No, he's not going to tip his hand. So take what he said there with a grain of salt. Okay, we don't know what Greg berhalter's ideal 11 for the game tomorrow is. But we might have an inkling

"If that's all he is at this point in his career, though, is a catch and shoot guy, again, he shot 36% or above on four or 5 attempts for about four years straight years, so he still has that in his bag. And on a minimum, I would do it. Yeah, worth a look. I think certainly. Greg ward says if we can get Kyrie and trade Westbrook to the pacers for Turner and maybe healed number 18 is on the way, but with the money work. Okay, so if we get Kyrie. Well, so Kyrie, you would have to get Kyrie for the mid level. Right. So he would have to say, no, thank you. I do not want $30 million. I feel like that's far fetched. And then trade Westbrook plus whatever it takes to get miles charter and buddy healed. I don't know if the pacers would be open to that. No, I think they should probably get a better deal out there. But in theory, if you can land those pieces, yes, I think that would be that would be a good thing for the Lakers. I just don't, I don't think that's very likely to happen for any of it. I don't think any of that is very likely to happen. I like your thinking, Greg, I hope you can put some good juju out into the universe and maybe. Hey, I hope he's right. I hope that they figure out if some way and Kyrie gets so upset with the nets he just says, oh yeah, I'm going to show you Lakers. I'll play for 6 million. Let's go. I mean, that would obviously be nice, but I'd even do some concessions and say, we don't even need both of these situations. I'd be happy with just one of them. Kyrie from the MLE or Westbrook for buddy yielded miles Turner. I'd be okay with that. Work out. That would work out to be okay with that too. Joan oliva said, I hope Kris Jen helps both AD and max shooting. Yeah, I mean, he was LeBron shooting coach in the past. He's worked well. So hopefully that does, it is something that matters and can help him along. I still have some concerns that they didn't go get a veteran head coach to be on darvin Hamm's bench. But aside from that, I mean, pretty much everybody's hired to start glowing reviews, so hopefully that lack of head coaching experience is an issue and these guys can get the best out of all the players. Yeah, if we can see a return of Anthony Davis more consistent shooting this year, that's going to be huge for us. And we need it. It has to happen. Go on some says the one GM that would pay Russ next year as Mitch. The hornets wouldn't keep him. He'd be an expiring contract. I have no idea. And this is maybe we should discuss this. I have no idea where Russ is going to be next year..

Yeah, the only other thing that I could maybe entertain. I don't know what's even available at two 58 in the lineback wide receiver department. I don't know if you would consider doubling up there as well just because it is still really have anybody under contract after next year. EJ Perry. Let's go through all the positions. Let's have some fun with this. Okay. I mean, right now, but two 58, Derrick king here is not, I mean, I think he's a UDF a but they met with him. They met with them. So Derek is one of the most fascinating players in college football. I know he's going to win the Heisman list. Yeah. He was the 8th string quarterback in high school who became the top quarterback recruit in the state of Texas. Went to Houston. He was behind, who was it, Greg ward, who was now wide receive for the eagles, was a great quarterback in college. Played wide receiver king did, played two years at wide receiver was pretty good moved to quarterback, had a record setting season got hurt, transferred to Miami. He had another great season, got hurt again. Here we are. He's going to be 26 when the season starts. They met with him. As a practice squad guy for the scout team, he makes a lot of sense. As a potential wide receiver, he makes a lot of sense. Like you said, I think he goes on drafted. I think the fact they met with him. Maybe they can get him in the building. Maybe they already know they can grab him if he doesn't get drafted. Yeah, I mean, I hate well, they did this 7th round, Julian Edelman, right, all over again. That's what's going to happen if they take Derek king years. I think he's Julian Edelman. But it does make sense in that mold, right? It doesn't make sense in that thought process. We don't know where you're going to play necessarily, but we know you're a football player and we'll see what we can do with you. The only other position that I don't think that we've addressed here that we could have potentially addressed was safety. But I don't say it. Let's go through all the positions and rapid fire that we did miss Caleb elbie. Caleb is like the Mac version of Mac Jones. They're going to move on for them. Right. Yeah. All right. Wide receiver. "Who's in the road game atom finishing with a win the giant so they have sweeping the giants and that puts the washington football team at ten and seven. Now i feel like this is kind of getting to their ceiling. This is like a favourable outcome for them. I think it's a fair point by you. That be i was a little rosy. But i still think like okay. Take a winner to away. I still think you're looking at like a nine and eight team I think they'll do better than eight nine. I think you're looking at like nine and eighteen. I think they have a high floor and low ceiling. I think that's what ryan patrick kind of put you so to kind of play my two plus or minus games game with you like you have wins against the bucks. And osei the falcons like you know. Those are the cowboys. The is going to be the cowboys. Those are the ones that i could see on the other way. Certainly the bucks game. The cowboys are so contingent on like you know. Football's very different december. But those are the two that i could kind of play jump rope a little bit the two losses you have to washington that i could almost easily not easily but more easily. See the way like. I think they're much more likely to be the seahawks and they are the buccaneers. Because like that's that's the you know if you know. We both love russell wilson but he he creates a lot of sacks for himself. You know what. I mean like against defense news like i could see that happening much more show than like like brady can out think this not easily but it is brady And then the bills. In week. Three and i love the bills as you mentioned but on the subject of regression like josh allen is not going to have the exact same level of accuracy this year that he did last year. I still think it'll be very good but we do. Tend to see. Even among the elite teams like kinks being worked out early in the season. And i could see this like you know. For the way you can then washington's just say to kind of hold on. I could see that much more than i can a little bit other things you had. So that's a loss for washington. I being pro. "All over w eike no matter how well keep played and you know he. He won a playoff game for this football team. Non many in philadelphia could say that carson wentz certainly can't say ronnie ken and you know i it just feels like jalen hurts will always be looking over his shoulder. And what's it going to take for this guy to prove. He is going to be the franchise quarterback like even have lamar jackson type. Three thousand passing yards seven rushing yards touchdowns. They win more games than expected. It may not even be and that's going to be real shame. I hope it doesn't come to that because the cheap it's like good numbers and i see him honestly mcnabb. He's going to be inaccurate. Times is going to look bad. But he's done make plays his legs. He's a very smart football player. Always the ipad around and he's going to do whatever he can to make sure he a starter each and every week from this football team he does not. he doesn't fear competition. Doesn't feel with the front office. Thanks to him. And i i just hope they give him all. Seventeen games. pervious quarterback yeah. I'm not convinced he's the guy i either. I think he's going to have an up and down season. But i i am hoping that he is the guy because i would love to us. All that draft capital to actually bulk up the roster with with other players. You now a golden opportunity to really views team with a ton of young talent. And i don't know that i want. I don't want them spending all of that capital spending all the money that you're gonna need to sign a top quarterback and soak up all that space on the on the cap. So you know i. It certainly would be in everybody's best interest if jalen hurts emerges as the franchise quarterback this year and i agree with you. I hope they give him the chance to do it. And one of the guys you mentioned in just a second ago that they're really going to be relying on and he definitely flashed big. This summer was surprising to everybody was quiz watkins. And this trio of wide receivers there. There's a couple of different camps. I hear a lot of you know. A growing chorus of people who are really excited about these three wide receivers smith and raider and watkins and how they're going to be utilized and all that and i also look at three very very inexperienced wide receivers. None of whom have ever done it at the nfl level. Mma big devante smith think he's going to be great. I think he's going to be offensive rookie of the year. But you can't just assume that's going to happen. I mean i it's it's it's not a one hundred percent lock and same thing with quiz watkins and jalen regular. There's a lot of question marks still with this receiving core. So what is your impression of watkins and this receiving core just in general. After after what you saw this summer. I think did you hit the nail on the head there with experience this guy. He has a repertoire. Jalen hurts which is good and he's really fast. And i like what he brings. This offense should he be starting. I'll no i think that's more of what the eagles have wide receiver. What they don't have the. I am really concerned about the depth on this team. I think this fine. I think it's gonna be fine. I think watkins and fall. What's behind it. greg ward okay. He's steady he's reliable he should be on. Nfl roster but as your four. I mean he might be starting get. Jj bigger whiteside like that's where for now. That's what i travel back on the practice squad after what that guy's all about. Yeah i mean geez. It's one of those. I'm really concerned you know. A guy in every quarterback has has a receiver that they really grow to rely on and and at least it seems as though maybe jalen hurts. Has that guy in in devante smith and we'll see how that shakes out here. During the course of the season any other roster moves. That surprised you with the eagles here as as they trimmed it down. And i did want to ask you know you. You mentioned The fact that there's you know some wanting a veteran in the locker room. I hadn't seen of john brown signed with anybody at the did he not. Okay so i mean that's a guy to me that i would potentially have some some interest in i mean i don't i don't know the reason why he was cut necessarily. But here's a veteran guy who's got some speed. He's he's played some good. nfl football. Before i take a flyer on that guy so to my knowledge. John brown after his release he was battling for. They like brian edwards. Aaron obviously henry. Rugs is a starter. Renfro had a really good. They were the story in three john. broaden into kind of mentor by edwards before he took over well edwards outplayed him. So brown's flavor like the number four number five wide receiver there and he kind of one more playing time and so he s arrays. He goes eight. Look is just you know if you got me now. I'm okay within they. They did that in the they went younger group. So yeah but i just did like the eleven big-name free agents let they weren't necessarily the best. Because technically larry fitzgerald soul free agent frank morrison. I think they're going anywhere really. But overall job ground like i- basics expected to sign before the season starts. Like i'd be shocked. It's he's clearly the best wire receiver. Unless you really want to bring back. Alshon jeffery at route. I know you guys made some predictions for cbs. I wanna get to them here in just a second but any predictions about the eagles this year that you have. I mean i don't need you. Don't need to go off the reservation with anything super bowl. "A lot of them care about you know the rhythm of games and once you get in it staying in it. I think they feel more strongly about. I know off season load management if we want to call it that i think i think player of those guys don't wanna practice at all from february which is a good. I think it was the tom brady point which is the. Nba doesn't randomly get people together on august fifteenth. And say let's have a three day minicamp that's what you think Each what are the. James harden is doing right now. That's a really good question particular. Read it fred. On james harden that comes to mind. We're gonna move on. I think i think the general consensus from players right now is more towards we would like more limited off season program. They would also really strongly like a clear distinction between mandatory and voluntary rate. Something that really grinds players gears is all this stuff that is quote unquote voluntary not voluntary. In the truth. Sense of it where it doesn't affect your your job prospects job performance I think second to that. A lot of veterans Care a lot more about throughout the week. What they're being asked to do whether or not they can have veterans days off once in a while that stuff i think is really important to players in terms of just sort of snap count management stuff. I think that's probably a little bit further away. And i think if if largely for players if you asked them to choose right like we're going to spell yet here and there now that the season is seventeen games long versus in the spring. You're not gonna have these quote unquote voluntary practices that you actually really should attend. Otherwise the coach is going to be mad. And maybe take it out on you in some form in terms of your job standing Actually you get to work out on your own day with your family during that time. Definitely think they lean more towards that but agree with you. That one of the lessons learned from last season was certainly be guys can stay in shape but also taking a little bit off their plate physically. It doesn't seem to have negative effects in terms of preparedness readiness training and it seems to help as far as limiting injuries. I think that's less. It seems like the data says that's less the case just because they're staying stronger and there's less sort of cumulative wear and tear than is just a proportional decrease in. Okay you play fifteen snaps instead of forty five. Well that's a third of the potential snaps on which you could be injured so it's last like you're tired. You're you're soft tissue is in better shape or whatever than it is. Just okay if you're not training in the spring and doing competitive reps than than you're probably not gonna you know have some big injury in the spring Then what is your next one. Yeah it's actually it's it's not precisely in this Mold but it's it's a little bit related. I in early. August cow shannon head coach. The forty niners at a quote our. He said he was going to manage his quarterbacks trae lance and jimmy garoppolo similarly how he manages wide receivers Every receiver who makes our team is going to play this year. I know it's different. When you have quarterbacks a different skill sets stop it kind of makes it easier for you to look at it similar to other positions. That's why. I don't think playing quarterbacks is a problem for our team. Yada yada yada anytime. The head coach says yeah. We're going to do a two quarterback system ugo okay and you don't believe it because there's just it's not sense right. It's like i- gadget play here and there you know. I think press taylor said that. The future of the eagles like multiple quarterbacks in the backfield. Including i believe greg ward right and then they would put jalen hurts in the backfield and my doolittle play action. Fake and then throw a screen to dallas. Got for six yards. I acknowledged that but you could see how it mattered. Right when lance went out there for third downs and we went out on the road. You could see a change. The calculus for how run defenses are going to account for The lance running. Fred fundamentally when a quarterback is a threat to run. You need one more player in the box. You add gap to the running game and that changes the entire geometry to change the structure of how. You're going to call your defense against predictable. Looks on so you saw lance that on the running game where he monster was very effective when lance in their lands only pulled the ball three times to run but the running game woke up atlanta's in there and then when garoppolo's out there they were executing the passing game with no problems they had rhythm even though they were kind of stepping in and stepping back out It requires an extremely deft hand to do this. And it can become predictable. Can become clear on tendency. What different quarterbacks mean so it is still a change up. It is not the and potatoes. It is a side dish with that sad. Yeah and he just hasn't made plays he's left plays on the field and i thought that like heading into the training camp it was sort of the key sort of had to beat out greg ward emmy which in my opinion was sort of a low bar Giving greg greg ward has been a guy that you know. He's done something that many eagles receivers over the last half decade haven't been able to do which is actually catch the football but he's holy unthreatening as a guy that's going to get to the catch and as downfield target so he's a guy. That's very easily replaceable. In my opinion. And i thought that it was a low bar for chavez. Welcome to come in and show that he deserved more. Playing time over a guy. Like greg work now. Since that time. A quiz watkins has made huge strides forward and has clearly past focused. And i don't think the fulcrums done anything to warrant playing time over greg ward Which again is was sort of a low bar for him to try to clear. And you know. I don't think he's any threat at this point to be a star. He shouldn't be. And you know those three guys that i mentioned rageh. Rigor smith And watkins they're probably gonna be your three starters Heading into the season at wide receiver position to huge upstate. For for fogel. Who in my opinion like not only has probably lost the starting spot but also could be in danger of just not even making the team at all. Yeah yeah and. I remember thinking that was possible. Going into the offseason. They could see like an outcome where the concerns that basically got him in the doghouse last year. Kind of like continued in Carried over and you ask me like what percentage chance. I thought he would have a not making the team. Like i had him as like a nearly. I think i probably had around like. It's not to present. That might not be wrong. Yeah so we'll see still i. I still have him on latest fifty three but yeah we'll see But it's not great for him. My next one to me. It would be kenny gained. Well i think he's looked a lot better in the preseason games then. He has so far in the practices that we've seen and specifically we obviously knew he kind of had a pass catching background. We've been decent as runner too. Which is the see Now i don't think he's really gone up against starters many starters i guess he did maybe early against the patriots but beyond that hasn't done so you still have to prove their and i still think Boston scott might be ahead of him in the beginning of the season. I don't know now rethinking like he might have more of a. You'll have like some kind of role player like very limited touch kind of role Yeah so i think he's been kinda one of the nice bright spots of the preseason. They did show on that. I think it was the first offensive. Play the game against the patriots. They had him in mile sanders on the field at the same time which. I'm not huge on too wide receiver. Excuse me to running back sets See the A huge advantage to that but they did show it. So it's something. It's another way that they can possibly use him. You'd only do that if the you know. If one of those running back like isola jit like weapon like has like. Nfl wide receiver slot skills can could actually play the slot. Receiver in the nfl. So maybe he can be that but Yeah as you mentioned he. He's been better in the games than than what we saw early in practice. And i think we had noted on the podcast previously. He was covert opt out last year. Or so he's been played football a long time and maybe there are some ross for him to to sort of knock off but he had a broken tackle In i think the steelers game to get another one against patriots. So he's not like this guy that you breathe on and he's going to go down like Like pump for example. Like you actually do up to bring them down if you're going to get him to the ground so Yeah that was encouraging to see and the other thing too is. I didn't go back and look for it. But nick serianni had mentioned During the steelers game that he chipped a defense van coming off the edge sort of made that guy think twice on his next pass rush about kind of coming hard off the edge so Yeah encouraging signs for him that he's not just a guy that can that has some speed and i can catch the ball but also has a little bit of a physical element to game as well. anything else in the game for you Now i mean it's just so there there are portions during the second. Mcpherson has struggled in. The preseason clearly hasn't had the success iraq game he did. And then i had regular down here in my loser section two from the game just because it's just like he'd three targets you'd five yards they. The caps he made was nice sandwich by two defenders note on. But we're not like seeing anything from him. And i know i don't think that four was totally his fault but i did like ican create separation. I feel like he got like like de routed by the corner on that play like the corner got his hands on him and knocked him off his route Just haven't seen you know what we've wanted to see from regular in the game so that was disappointing. And then i kinda. I also jordan howard in here in my losers jimmy. I don't know if you saw that. Did you see that. Play third and one and they ran it and how all and i was so confused watching that replay. I'm like what happened here. You dislike stopped like he couldn't hit the whole or hard enough and that's supposed to be his bread and butter visibility. Short yardage runner is. I believe a little overstated last year in particular like i actually looked at like what his numbers were in those shortage situations and he was he was really bad last year with the dolphins. And then you didn't really have many carries it all with the eagles. Last year they acquired like midseason. But i think that that's a little bit of a of sort of what i what what he used to be like what he was the year when he was good with the he was with the bears like he was that guy. But i don't think he's that guy rod of these of these really be on rosser anymore. I don't know if that's unfair to say. But i think there are better options than jordan howard. And but he seems to be a guy that's gonna make the team based on what we've seen both in practice and in games in terms of where he is on the depth chart so that that's seen jimmy. It's insane that a guy who hasn't been the way off raises is that he was able to be on a roster after the dolphins cut him in november and wasn't until the eagles signed him believe in april Earlier this year like resigned him like he was able to join a roster now clarify he was on the practice squad last season. He wasn't actually on their roster. So any team. I'll riley was elevated them for ya so so like any team had assigned him time and they didn't so it wouldn't make sense to me for the eagles to them. Keep him on their roster during final cuts. Because there's no like there's no indication that any team would sign him. You can just cut him in. Then bring him back..

"I did look at the sleeper app and it did say that you know. They could split carries boston scott in him. So it's kind of wayne see approach. You know he did have again. Eighty three point. One fantasy points. Only one touchdown i mean i definitely think he can get more than one touchdown this year. I think i said that already. But i i do think you can get more than one touchdown i feel like he probably is slightly below that this year again in all depends on injuries mile. Sanders is playing the full year. I don't think that boston scott is going to get the bulk of the carries but if mile sanders does get hurt. I can definitely see boston. Scott eclipsing this eighty three point one fantasy total but i i think as of right now. I'm not gonna factor in injuries. I'm going to say that. He does not eclipse that fantasy total. He's below that this year because again mile sanders i think will be the lead running back and stay healthy for the eagles. So that's my thoughts on boston. Scott so a guy that you know has been you know kind of you know mentioned a little bit and has been standing out in eagles camp and that is the wide receiver quiz watkins. I do remember him scoring that touchdown against the cardinals last year. Because i had jalen hurts and it was a it was a pretty good play. Had quiz walk ins doing like a juke. Move and you know it was more. It was more of a quiz watkins. Play as opposed to jalen hurts. Play kaz was kind of a wide receiver screen. He caught it out. his guy ran down. The sideline scored a touchdown. I think it was on like a second twenty so that was a highlight from watkins. Last year and had a seventy nine yard touchdown in the preseason game against the steelers. so he's a guy that i think is looking to make an impact. This year only had twenty point one fantasy points. Last year and a touchdown. I definitely do think if he plays a bigger role on the team. He will eclipse his fantasy total from last year and again there's not a lot of household names when it comes to the eagles often so i definitely do think that he can make an impact and eclipses randy total. I don't know if it's going to warrant. You know him. Being a waiver wire pickup. We'll have to wait and see again. It all depends on injuries and stuff and how involved he is in the offense. So i'll say he's gonna clips his total. But i'm not going to necessarily say like go out and get them because i don't think he's going to make an impact in terms of standard leagues. I think obviously dynasty. You take a chance on him but in regular leagues. I think you kind of you know. Let him sit on the waiver. Wire until like an injury happens or if he makes a really big impact then you go out and you pick them up so in other wide receiver on this team is travis. Fold them and his role is in question with the eagles. So that's going gonna be interesting to see how that shapes out. So i'm guessing he really has not been producing and camp was a hot waiver. Wire pickup last year definitely had some good games in week four. He had twelve point. Seven points against the forty niners in touchdown. Twenty six point two points against the steelers and a touchdown in week. Five weeks sixty at sixteen point. Five fantasy points against the ravens and a touchdown sixteen point eight points against dallas and we ate at a touchdown so from week. Four two week eight produced in between that yet week seven. He only had seventy three yards receiving yet. Nine point eight points there so he had those games where he scored touchdowns but then after that cooled off really was a non factor after those couple of games. So you know. I don't really know if he doesn't you know if he's on the eagles if he's not playing you know for any team i guess he doesn't eclipses ninety six point nine fancy total and i guess if he's really not lighting up in camp than he probably is lower than that i mean. Espn only hasim projected to have fifteen points as she are so that definitely is not a good sign for him. So i think that you know. He does not eclipse his fantasy total. Judging by what. I'm looking at right now. So yeah i'm gonna say. He doesn't eclipse his fancy total. Maybe he doesn't even make the team. It seems like you know with all these other receivers they got so yeah charles. Fogelman will not eclipse his fancy total so in other wide receiver. You got greg ward. Last year he had one hundred six point six fantasy points. He had six touchdowns. I mean definitely a guy that has had a role on the team in the past but you know right now with all these other receivers is he going to have a you know. Is he still going to have a role on this team. And he's likely going to make the roster so now it's really just about going to be able to eclipse that. I mean you got devante. Smith you got regular i mean. I think it's going to be tough for greg ward to eclipse his fantasy total. So i'm gonna say he doesn't eclipses his fantasy total. I'm going to say that. Demonte smith and jalen reagan. Really going to have the bulk of the targets again. If injuries happen then gregoire does have a chance to take on a major role of bigger role on the scene but if he you know is kind of like the number three wide receiver. He's not really going to get. You know a ton of targets because on top of that you gotta deal with the tight ends with goddard and erz. We're gonna take even more targets away from greg ward. So i'm gonna say gregoire does not match his total so now you also have jordan howard on the team and i don't really think that he's going to play a major role in the running game for the eagles because he does have some competition for carries you know obviously mile sanders boston. I mean But i i mean i get you know i. My point is i wouldn't be opposed to like a a geographical thai. What about the monuments. Just i'm just thinking you know what i mean like this. Let's talk about that, and I've mentioned a couple times now on the show. I'm a big Philadelphia Eagles fan. Um, I have no earthly idea what to expect from the Philadelphia Eagles this season. Wow. I have optimism with Jalen hurts. I liked what I saw from him The back end of last season tonight say that Meekly because there was some stuff that was really questionable and some other stuff that was like the little flashes of brilliance that you saw at Oklahoma and Alabama. The season hinges on Jalen Hurts. Um, the the offense is again. There's promised there you have some guys, obviously Devante Smith going in the first round. I was gonna be my next question. He's day to day with an injury at the moment, So you expect him to be fine once September rolls around. But after him, it's Zach Ertz and then jail in rigor. And Greg Ward Jr like the receiving corps is not stellar. Dallas got hurt. Shout out to him. He's somebody who wants to get paid like a top 10 tight end like the Cowboys, I'll believe it When I see it. Love Dallas got it, but still And then the defense is aging along the defensive line, but still talented. A secondary that actually looks okay on paper better than okay, but they often go out there and don't perform that way. So They could finish dead last in the NFC East. They could finish third. They could finish this high second. I don't see them winning it, right. I still on paper and probably gonna pick Washington. And even that I don't feel great about because Dallas on paper as well. Looks okay. I just know the Giants aren't winning the division. Right? So I'm going to tell you what the Giants are winning the division. Okay, um, again, this is all going to lay on the hands in the back. Of C Quam Barkley and Daniel Jones, right, Um, again before before I get into the Giants. I'll concede you talk about your eagles. Uh, Jalen hurts. I mean, you know, Granted, he didn't necessarily have the best finished this season. But there were flashes there. There are moments where, Just like, Okay. Like you can see why this guy was who he was in Oklahoma and Bama. And you know, he showed a little bit better armed that I think was kind of advertised. I think the knock on Jalen hurts coming out of college was that he wasn't necessarily the thrower that tool time Nebiolo was, and that's kind of why he blue, not blue, but almost blew the national championship game where he played one of the most absolute worst halves. You can never see anybody play up in that position. And, um, you know, grand if he got to go to Oklahoma and rebuild his draft, stock and kind of like, get his reputation back, But there's been that flash there with Jalen hurts. That makes you think that he can be the due to, you know, lead this franchise..

"Frank schwab. Nfl writer and reporter for yahoo sports. We're go around the league and talk about some of the big story lines making news over the last week. And i'll get his thoughts on how he sees the eagles twenty twenty one season shaping up and some thoughts on the nfc east and teams that he's higher on and maybe lower on then consensus. We'll do all that coming up here in just a few minutes but before we get to him i wanna to talk a little bit about the eagles. First preseason game which they got under their belt after losing to the steelers on thursday night so good to see the eagles back out on the field Good to see the first team Team members on the field in preseason game actually playing some football and i have five big things five big takeaways from the eagles. First preseason game again against the steelers in which the got off to an early lead but then you know in the second half The third stringers let the game get away from them but Of course we are mostly looking at what the starters did. And how starters performed and some of the primary backups. And so i think the big name everybody's talking about after the first preseason game and really it's just a continuation of how well he's played in training camp so far. This summer is wide receiver quiz. Watkins folks sure are high high on the second round the second year player Former sixth round pick quiz watkins young wide receiver. And it's easy to see see why based on what we saw in the game against the steelers. I mean out of training camp. He's been one of the most improved players on the roster. He's he's making contested catches during practice running. Better routes making plays using his speed and we saw that speed on display in the steelers game on thursday night. Retook that screen pass from joe. Flacco seventy nine yards to the house Jalen hurts also just missed connecting with him. On a ninety eight yard touchdown pass. He had beaten his defender badly but hurts overthrew him on the play. So there's a lot of conversation right now is says watkins a starter on this team is is he a guy who could be one of the stars on the outside opposite devante smith i mean i. I know that there's a lot of folks. And with this. Very very unproven. Group of wide receivers. He absolutely could move into the starting lineup. We haven't seen a ton of tremendous stuff from jalen regular so far in training camp again. Jalen rigor came into camp and failed his his physical readiness test and Obviously there were off the field reasons for that but nevertheless jalen. Reagan did not come into camp and get off to the best of starts. He made a nice catch in the game. A couple of catches in the game against Against the steelers. But you've got to wonder if jalen regular is now almost fully slotted for a slot sue for a slot position with the eagles and whether or not quiz watkins if he continues to play like this could end up being one of the starters on this team and You know i feel like Greg ward travis. Vogue him not hearing nearly as much from them so far here in training camp and through through the first preseason game as as with quiz watkins and it's hard to teach speed. You know what. I mean quiz. Watkins sure has that speed in order to be stalwart member. He clocked a four point. Three five forty yard dash at the nfl scott scouting combine which was the third best time in his class and so he's known for having lightning fast speed and he started to play a little bit more towards the end of the season last year in his rookie year. But i don't think anybody sauce relying on quiz watkins for any kind of offensive production here in twenty twenty one the if if watkins continues to play like this and he becomes a starter on this team. Nbc sports ruben. Frank noted just how unusual and how rare that would be the last eagles receiver drafted in the sixth round or later with more than one hundred and fifty receiving yards in their entire eagles career. Was tony woodruff a ninth round. Pick in nineteen eighty two. Who caught thirty six passes for five hundred fifty four yards from nine hundred eighty two through nineteen eighty-four and the last eagles wide receiver drafted in the sixth round or later with five hundred yards in a season. Harold carmichael was just inducted into the pro football hall of fame on saturday so again Those numbers from nbc. Sports reuven frank just showing how. How rare and unusual it would be for someone of quals watkins stature who was drafted as late as would as as late as he was for him to make a true impact for the eagles on the nfl would be would be virtually unprecedented in eagles. History certainly in recent eagles history. And you know. I know some of the The nfl network guys impede schrager was talking about him after the game on against the game after the game against the steelers when he was on friday morning. And doing a recap talking about you know. Welcome to the national stage quiz. Watkins i mean are we there already i. I'm very happy that quiz watkins playing well. The eagles could certainly could use something to go right. You know what i mean like. This team has not had a whole lot of things. Could he be somebody that really makes an impact and you know. Once the bell rang and he he had to get into meaningful games. John hightower made absolutely no impact whatsoever on the two thousand. Twenty one eagles. And i'm not saying that's definitely going to happen to quiz watkins but the odds are certainly higher that the regular season starts quiz. Watkins turns into john hightower from last year. As opposed to the second coming of harold carmichael and a second wide receiver a second starting wide receiver on this team. My second my second big takeaway from the eagles preseason game against the steelers was that jalen hurts has gone off to a good second impression. A really nice to dallas got in the game through it with anticipation threw it into a tight. "Like again we talk about like things that you sort of expect to happen in days one. Two three of camp are happening day. Nine reagan sometime cap. Obviously with the Lower body tightness. I think it was the first. Four practices came back. Didn't look great. Had a big day or encouraging day anyway was that the last practice two days ago yes okay and then i think today was sort of a step back because they just didn't look in sync really in any way and those connected on some passes Late in the season When when jalen hurts became the start starting quarterback so there you know there is some history there but those guys really haven't been on the same page in in lebanon eleven's Even on wanna once. I saw some of those last week. Where regular in heard slight. The timing wasn't right and so that seems to be more than just like a one off kind of thing and might actually be some kind of issue that needs to be ironed out and maybe again they can get that ironed out with quite a few practices to go before the regular season. But yeah that's something to flag for now. Also just the fact that. Like i was hoping for your sake that you would take that practice on thursday in kinda use it to springboard start stacking the days as we like to talk about but isn't visible today basically to me so not great speaking of stack in the days by the way like that was sort of the The explanation given on travis. We haven't seen a lot from him over the last few practices I don't think so. So i think very clearly. The starting wide receivers are going to be dante. Smith as you mentioned trubisky is bad. Jalen rigor is still going to get the opportunity to start. No matter what happens. The rest of camp in my opinion and in that third spot is going to be between traps. Fogel and greg ward. And i would sort of give fogelman the leg up there early even though we just said he hasn't had a great camp But you know based on the reps that they've gotten a full. They've really given fogelman ton of first team wraps so i think he's sort of the leader there I think there is an opportunity for watkins to have some kind of role initially like we've talked about. John hightower getting an early role early in season last year after he had a great camp and i think that could be something that quiz walk ins earns this year. My we're talking like ten to fifteen snaps maybe early in the season and then go from there like if you can make plays in and maybe design maybe a player to for him either down the field or like on a quick hitter where you allow them allow him to get yards after the catch That kind of role for him. But i don't think that he's going to be given the opportunity To start Early in the season. Barring a couple of injuries i agree with that but i do think kind of along the lines of what you said. There is a path for west to look really good in the preseason. And it's kind of like well. We have to play the sky because he's looking really really good because he has really good in certain instances even today. I saw him win one on one against everyone. Say cornerback now zac mcpherson where mcpherson and actually got quite a bit of a fistful of his jersey at multiple points in the route and he made the catch anyway. And i've actually seen that happen a couple times with quiz. Where like he's been interfered with like there's been a penalty. I think At penalty on him to and like he made the play anyway. So watkins. I think has done a really nice things. He's fast the route running. I think that's what. I've been so impressed with him. This camp at he's really less improved in that regard that he run some really sharp routes linking get opening and can separate not just do the speed that because of his chris brown running ability so i am not ruling out the chance that he just blows like everyone away in preseason especially because if he's running with some of these backup units like you know the second third stringers and if he's really looking great against him then all of a sudden maybe he gets them first team reps and then we'll see how it goes from there But yeah as of today. I don't think he's going to be a starter. I think it's going to be pretty dry like you said fulcrum and regular devante. Probably your top three or greg ward. Whatever those eddie. In any case those are probably your top four But yeah i think i think walk ins has potential to move up but jimmy one thing on real quick before off okay..

After the catch is a guy who maybe belongs on an nfl roster because it gives you some special teams Ability in or at least he can play on special teams rather and he's gonna make catches that he that you know you would expect them to make which is more than you can save a lot of eagles receivers in in recent years. I'm they just don't know san francisco is that situation And i don't know. I don't want to hold the splits with those guys healthy against them too much I'm curious what you think about it. Because it came really early in the season i mean. Those were his third for jonathan six. Nfl games after. No no preseason is clearly going to be more established presence this year but Kittle is a legitimate target in like samuel has always been targeted high rate to much different targets than the types of targets. Yuka seeing But i mean like you said this is a run first offense and i. I just don't know if there's going to be enough targets to go around. So yeah i. I think If in order for. I used to have a special season there needs to be either injuries. Or deebo samuel just needs to have a bad year and as at least as a receiver. They use them the running game okay.
