Super Bowl 54 Recap
"Kansas City Thirty One San Francisco Twenty air it. It is Mitchell as he's been waited his whole damn life to make that call and cheese fans. They've been waiting fifty years for their team to Hoist Lombardi and it finally finally happened on this. The second of February two thousand twenty the Kansas City chiefs are the super bowl champions after that thirty one to twenty win over the San the average Cisco Forty nine dollars a game in which they were down like they were all their postseason games by double digits. This time in the fourth quarter and yet Patrick Mahomes and company would not not be denied. Dan Heads here the around the NFL podcast presented by little caesars. And yes I'm coming to you from a hard rock stadium that is filled with heroes mark. Sesser Chris Wesseling and Greg Rosenthal. What is up boys? Hey Dan still filled with some chiefs fans and employs employs. Usually I feel like we start the taping after midnight. got going a little quicker like there's still an MVP chant going on the exciting. These fans. Don't WANNA leave. They've waited. You know half a century for this. Yeah usually when we're here it feels like we're ghosts like passing passing through a stadium and and and you can't. You're not sure if you're humid or not until you get back to the hotel but in this case where here. The field is is covered in confetti. Where on the third level the really Nice hardrock stadium here in Miami was great Super Bowl Week? A lot of fun a great city for a super bowl the eleventh and Super Bowl in this area which is most just past New Orleans and If you're a cheese fan this was the dream come come true and I got to watch the second half of this game in the seats With my cousin Matt and I just you know watching an older gentleman guy looked like he was in his fifties with his wife Cheese FAN IN JERSEY. As that game it became clear. After obviously the Damian will even before the Damian Williams run that clinched it it was becoming clear then the Williams touchdown and then there was this release. Like Oh my God the chiefs are GonNa win the Super Bowl and it was a well-earned win and one that didn't look particularly like it was heading in this direction even halfway through the fourth. That's quarter the chiefs to me. Their players and coach Kinda remind me of the fans. It's been so long since they got that Super Bowl in Randy read. It's been so long a guy like Frank Clark find his way there. Honey Badger finds his way to Kansas City to make this happen. Terrell suggs is lucky enough to come along for the ride at the end of the year. A lot of I just find their way to Kansas City and end up winning this one and you're right fourth quarter at midway through the fourth quarter forty nine hundred ninety five point six percent win probability. I know that's not your stat. The latest evidence that people need to stop talking about win probability it means nothing other than a twitter talking boy. It means it means it's unlikely the other team's GonNa win and now know Kyle Shanahan. Would it peaked at about ninety nine point wait. Six percent against the Patriots early in the fourth quarter always had ninety five point six percent. The percentage. I don't think takes into account Patrick Mahomes uh-huh it just doesn't or the chiefs offense or Andy Reid like the way that you have to dominate Patrick mahomes and make his life. If uncomfortable for sixty minutes I think is the hardest thing to do in the NFL. The forty niners balled out on defense. Not Unlike I believe the the Seahawks balled out on defense against the broncos. They did so many things right for the first three quarters. I think in a lot of scenarios and with a lot of quarterbacks that game would have been twenty seven to six at with eight minutes left in the fourth quarter and they're never could've been a comeback but mahomes got out of a lot of plays blaze. That could have gone worse. He had a lot of negative. Plays the chiefs defense. Did just enough and it just shows you. Yeah you can. You can do a lot while. They held him to five point three yards per play which is a very very low number for the chiefs and she's still put up thirty one points in nine drives. They barely have the ball. They still went over not surprising. Because that's what they've been doing for for months and months and if we had one kernel of information going into the for the last two weeks to to base our analysis on that the chiefs and Patrick Mahomes I would open the third quarter with back to back picks by Patrick Mahomes and that the niners would be nestling a twenty two ten lead minutes into into the fourth. You would think this is a perfect setup for San Francisco to run away with this thing but if you give Patrick Mahomes even ten minutes to operate and it gets hot. Aw everything's off the table. Fifty fifty two and a half minutes of game time the niners down day and I remember thinking as has the game was reaching as it's ticking through the fourth quarter and they have a twenty two ten lead and thinking what made the chief. So unstoppable all when they were humming the regular season but especially in those two comebacks in the AFC playoffs it. was that big play ability. That the niners there's through their dominant front four. Were taking away. Mahomes running for his life just by his brilliance kept the game close because is almost any other quarterback decided. Lamar Jackson has a couple sacks. Fumbles and the game gets away. Like what Von Miller Cam Newton a few years back but he was able to stay on his feet. Keep the game from getting away and the what really sticks out to me at that moment again. Midway through the fourth quarter after the tyreek hill catches is overturned on review. And you feel the entire building is psyching up. It feels like the niners are about to make the big play. Plays away from winning the super. Aw It is third and a miles third and fourteen. I believe third and fifteen and I leaned to my cousin Matt. I said the most likely play. Is You get try to get half of this back and then make a manageable fourth-down fourth and five and get it done. But no that's not what the chiefs do that's not how they operate and even a game where they never made any big plays with the season on the line mahomes dropback. This time found tyreek Hill West on a busted coverage and that changed
Will Myles Garrett Get Lengthy Suspension for Helmet Swing?
"Fight. That is GONNA be remembered a lot longer than the Cleveland browns. Twenty one two seven victory on Thursday night football over the Pittsburgh. steelers I am Greg Rosenthal alongside Chris Wesseling in your beautiful house. Chris unfortunately has got to go to bed. She's got an early shift to get to. And you know we've got some wild things to talk about because this game was secondary and we'll get to the game in a bit was largely forgettable big win for the browns but the last ten seconds in which myles Garrett through Mason Rudolph to the ground and then wound up taking his helmet off and Hidden Mason. Rudolph in the head with the helmet is obviously something we've never seen in. NFL history trying to think of similar circumstances Albert handsworth stomping and kicking. Andre Garard the the Cowboys Center in two thousand. Six comes to mind. He was suspended. Five Games for that But it was about as ugly as it gets in the immediate thought is. Can't browns fans just enjoy anything. And then what is the NFL going to do with myles Garrett. Yeah I think we both mentioned the Albert Hanes worth thing to each other and then I think to me it also reminded me a little bit of that west of his playoff game tobacco with the bengals and steelers just losing control at the end of the game. In this case it's really marquees. POUNCEY will be suspended but it's really hard to blame the steelers for much of this. They lost two guys two receivers to helmet-to-helmet hits from undisciplined browns team and then Myles Garrett just lost control just he went outside of his body. It seemed like Doc. He hit brewed off late on the play. which I don't think should be lost in what happens because immediately fans say hey? Rudolph was grabbing his helmet. He was trying to take his off as if he was starting. First of all. It doesn't really matter if that was true and he started anyways but Gary knew what he was doing. It's eight seconds left in the game. Rudolph clearly let go of the past and Garrett was getting in an extra shot in Garrett has such a smart guy writes poetry. He's he's such a smart player the way he plays but he has has a reputation of getting those little extra shots like. He has a little of a reputation among players or broadcaster. He pushes the envelope. And you like that sometimes as as a player but as a fan. But I don't know what it was in this case He. He felt like he had to get that extra shot. And then what happened. And he felt like he had to take Rudolph's helmet and I don't think there's anything you can really do to explain it. It's just a question of whether we see him again this year and everyone immediately after the game is saying we can't see him again. This zero we're trying to protect players and that's probably true. There are six games left in the year. I usually just go off precedent. There's really no precedent for this to me. This is a lot worse than Hanes. Were didn't hanes worth got five games gear obviously has no previous problem with the League. But it certainly wouldn't be surprising if that's it for myles Garrett this year
Packers scrape out 10-3 opening night win over Bears in defensive slugfest
"Was that kind of night for the chicago bears the green bay packers hackers and a dominating defense of showing take out the defending division champions tend to three at soldier field in the n._f._l. One hundred kickoff gough yes the packers with arid. Everyone talking aaron rodgers matt leflore mark more like matt labar matt to flower flower blooming it wasn't it wasn't about aaron rodgers. It was about mike petten and the packers defense ten to the three season opening win just like the the big game last year in week. One the packers break the bears hearts and that's how it all starts dan hands of the around the n._f._l. Podcast joined in the backyard of what is it. What do we call on. The spice west west rose west arose. That's pretty good no longer be dated and a few years but for now i love it. West rose were here in the backyard with of course greg rosenthal's my left mark cecil next to me and wes and <hes> lakisha here tara deaker and it's a beautiful night in southern california. We sat outside chirping. Crickets are chirpin ambient sound. That's all of mitch trubisky fans hands. Yes exactly exactly so. Let's get into talking about this game <hes> because listen i don't think we were expecting a shootout greg but no one expected game at this level and we could dissect <hes> how poorly the bears played but give it up for the packers defense which balled out right here lots of people had great. Night's goudie was one of brian to the packers. General manager brings in preston smith who gets three q._b. Hits in this <unk> game including the game finish zig area smith. I think hadn't even bigger impact the brings adrian aimo senate who has the key interception <hes> his draft half picks darnold savage and i think the two safeties they have savage in amos are gonna let mike pet and do a lot of crazy stuff back there. He loves having five six defensive backs. They're not going to dominate like this every week but you could just see aaron rodgers after the game. How happy is that. He's going to have a difference making defense and i think they can be a top seven the eight ten defense all season. I don't think there's a fluke. I mean i i think part of it is the offense you play tonight in chicago. That seems like a work in progress and you know a lot of those players did not operate great in the preseason and airy measured compared to what you were saying during well. No i mean i i would say this. I leave your credit because i think mike patton you. You got some with these games back. When he was cleveland coach in the one good season they had and when he was the jets coach when he started his court kind of feel himself in the second quarter with this defense they got aggressive and they took chances and they were able to against the bears offense it in the second half. I'll never forget this drive where it's one points i and forty then it's second and forty than its third and forty and i you know for all the people who want to tug mitch trubisky into this conversation a franchise quarterback. I've not seen someone with that. Label look has lost consistently on third down as he did tonight. There seemed to be no plan for this offense or he could not pull them out of the trouble. They got into and it's going to be a long week for him. I know logically not to overreact two week. One especially after the quarterback didn't play in the preseason but there is a there's a feeling of collaboration just throwing mitch trubisky by the way so this is the big breaking news the midway through the

Mark Cecil, Chris Wesseling and Greg Rosenthal. What is up boys? Hayden. What is that about fighting the millennials and saints stop coming? After the listeners we often we've done part of our zoo after listeners I feel like that happened for years ago. I stopped getting on Molyneaux a along time ago. I think. Yeah. Read a book quite often, you know, at right around the time book once in a while right around the time, you met a woman who was known as the paramour. But now she has a name it's Lakisha and Wes this ramp up to the wedding has been outrageous this weekend Lakisha, and it's all in the Graham. And and there was there was girls by the pool. There was a poll involved reps. Stu you want to take a break from following? Matt Mark Patrick Brady on Instagram. You could also follow Lakisha Jackson keesa Jackson zero. And I would say do not ever stop following. Mark Patrick Brady. In fact, if you're not falling on Instagram police, do it do. How you feeling where's your emotions little overwhelmed? The peace scale right now. P scale. I would say is about three. Okay. That's a good place. Like, I'm totally confident about the wedding, and who are marrying and nature life decision. The most important, right? It's more of like just there's so much planning involved, and I had him in mind because I'm older like I'm nobody gets married for the first time at forty five. This is ridiculous sub. So I had it in my mind that everything would be casual, you know, I'm past that like fairytale stage of the wedding. Yeah. But Kanter is are open casual is not happy. What you are slowly learning. Is that you control nothing right at all at this. Yes. It's a bit of a cliche. You realize as the wedding's coming together that you're just along for the ride. Well, it's I feel like so I know I don't have any control. But I'm also expected to contribute a lot that stuff's about. Yeah. "Over the Jaguars. I'm Greg Rosenthal. I'm with Chris Wesley, and we're going to get to previewing all the week, fourteen games in just a minute. But how do you feel Wes on a night? We watched the play that I'm going to remind you about at your son's high school graduation. I'm going to say, do you? Remember that Thursday night. We were at work in Derrick Henry ran for ninety nine yards. I told you I'd remind you about it in twenty something years. I'm gonna hope that in twenty something years when we'd run into each other. We're not gonna talk titans Jaguars. They'll well. My point is I'm going to say this game. If nothing out you never know what you're going to get on a Thursday night it provided one play that. I think you will remember. And now that I've said it and. In our listeners. We're going to be still doing this podcasts at that point. By the way, we're going to be in our late. We're going to be in our late sixties mapping any ally. And all of our listeners that are listening to you. Now just put like a little reminder and say hey, remind Greg to remind Wes about that touchdown. When old Barnaby Wesseling is graduating high school with A a foreign foreign of of war war point. point. Oh. Can't imagine the paramour going for Barnaby west. Hey, I mean, what more could you ask from from titans? Jags which I was not gonna ask for the same Jaguars defense from last week to show up, but that didn't happen now you could've asked. Yeah. For a close game. But at least you got an exciting performance doesn't make you feel any different about the titans to see him have a game. Like this. We've seen a couple where they put it all together. No, it doesn't. I think that that was a very poor defensive effort by the Jaguars think this Jaguars defense tends to go as the offense goes. Yes. And when Leonard fournette got stuff that the end of a fourteen play drive that would have given Jacksonville chance to take the lead. Even though they were being outplayed by the titans just felt like they packed it in for the night. I get. Yeah. But that's a tough one because in your right? But people said that when they're in buffalo the defense kind of gave up. Well, it's not. For five days ago. I know it was at home with the. Yeah, this is on the road on a short week, and you know, in the middle of by the way in the last month of a loss season, it's off air. And it's a it's a tough spot. They were in. But I don't think AJ boy a at the beginning of that play. With Henry made the ninety nine yard run, which is one play after the Dighton defense stuffed Leonard for net. As you mentioned, I'm more. He's he's trying to not Mackel miles. I mean, there can rewatch he gets going. He's a tough man to bring down not the ninety nine year run..

"Heroes. Mark Cecil, Chris Wesseling and Greg Rosenthal. What is up always hate whenever we can get out of here with Tim Posey being tabbed is the one with the wind problem. I'm accepting that are. I could think of a few others, but the drink the grapes sometimes, but people tweeted these ask we tweeted out, you know, and I was like what makes you think? I have a problem. Great job by the listeners. I think on the money drop slightly better doing your six or season six and getting better. And better speaking of people interacting on Twitter. Our holiday party is coming up as a as you may or may not be aware. And I did have an idea at one point Erica to get a plus one for the first time how the idea why don't we auction off? Yeah. A date with Ricky Hollywood. But after seeing some of the activity on your Twitter lately. No, somebody creeps out there. Clean it up guys. Yeah. It's it's bad. I always thought of our listenership as typically almost essentially all male, which I think is still pretty accurate, but. Decent folk who were if anything maybe a tad lonely at times some of those. Yes, like the same way any of us were when we were young you're just trying to your drift list to some degree. But but I've seen another side. Now that I would strike is utterly consumer always going to have a couple of bad apples. I choose to believe that these creeps are just a few sprinkle of the crazies out there, and the most of our list or just imagine if one of those creeps one said auction and was standing next to us at the holiday. I think that's a I think you're you're then there with you. A lot of messages I've been getting. And then the first thing, Dan sesame is an imagine. If that guy was next to you at the holiday party auction as your date like okay, just said, so okay. Yeah. I think in general selling like a woman's body. Probably not a great. You know, it's It's not not my my. thing. What for if I go is a date. Oh my God. Greg who's with you sell your body just assume decent proposal? I just assumed that came with the package. Boy, I think the promise of the people tweeting assume that too, and that's that's where those people should not probably be allowed on the premises. Let's keep package out of this. Yeah. All right. You heard at the top of the show we've talked some saints some Cowboys in big day. And now we're going to get to the rest of the week thirteen games. Yes. It is. It's all over for the buys. So we got a lot of football to talk about. In fact, I think we should just get into it. And we gotta stay on schedule. I missed the buys. But yes, you're right. No bloviating. That's the rule for today's show. All right. Okay. What about holding forth? I'll call it out. If I see some bloviating. I mean, if you're spending the finger, we need to actually pay attention to that. That signal this time. Let's get into it. And we'll start with early games. The Baltimore Ravens. They dead. They lost three in a row. They got left for dead. Then they came out of there by they installed. Lamar Jackson as their quarterback and they've won two straight. So here they are six and five second place in the AFC north and right in the mix for the wildcard they now travel to Atlanta to face the dirty birds the falcons who have seen their season crumble, Chris Wesseling, three straight losses..

"Okay. I don't know. Is a guy who is a football reporter. I think you're thinking of Ken Rosenthal from FOX. I think July. Point point. Anyway, Greg Rosenthal Rosenthal tweeted week thirteen Sunday night football is Seattle at San Francisco. And a couple of other appealing games that weekend are protected by the networks. One involves the Steelers and one I think is patriots. Minnesota's week thirteen you're talking about. Yes. So you. Let's see the Vikings patriots is a four o'clock game on FOX that that week. What did you say? The other one was the Steelers were involved. Okay. Steelers are hosting the chargers, right? One o'clock he reported that either those games are protected or likely to be so those would not be candidates to flex in Seattle and San Francisco Sunday night Seattle hosting that. Yeah. Okay. At seattle. So that's a game. You probably want to get out of there. Probably. So he picks you're looking at the schedule. He picked what he would do for that Sunday night game. The Bill Cosby in Miami that day the pills are in Miami. That day wasn't that. Okay. I. I. Well, the first thing I thought of was swapped Thursday game for the Monday for the Sunday nineteen New Orleans down Orleans down. That's not allowed not allowed. Okay. Joe? Are you looking what were the two games that were not Minnesota? Sorry thirteen Sunday night is San Francisco at Seattle. Greg rosenthal. Tweets you want to get that out of their two games? You might pick charger Steelers and likings patriots are probably or known to be not eligible protected by the other networks so which game that he pick. I'm going to guess he picked Atlanta Baltimore..

My name is Dan Hans, this, and I am joined in a room filled with euros. Mark settler, Chris Wesseling, and Greg Rosenthal. What does that boys hate? Come back to America. I'm going crazy. I can guarantee there will be no cards played at my bachelor party because if there are, it ceases to be a bachelor party and it's just a bunch of men standing around. Wondering why west took an Uber all the way back to LA. We'll be no cards at a bachelor porn. Oh yeah, four thousand mile Uber. Whoa. I, I don't plan to play cards. I mean my my long held stance on parlour games sides with this, ideally in perfect. There was a big, I I know we've talked about this on the podcast, but since it's come up now I'm gonna bring it up again. There was a craze in our country inexplicable. It's bat. We're back in our country. By the way, it was a great time in England, but now we're back on the shores. And the reason I said, I'm going crazy because I wake up at four AM every day in that, and that's not good for the soul. But in around two thousand to two thousand three poker on television was a big deal. And and then if you had an aunt or a mother or a girlfriend, the whole thing was, oh, well, he's a twenty two year old guy. Let's get him a poker set whenever no one ever asked anybody, do you actually play poker which I never did, but I ended up having like coming into three different poker sets over three or period that are collecting dust in my parents basement. It's also highly annoying because it became the super. Trendy thing for like a bunch of like bro actors to like play in hollowed out like Hollywood basements together, and it appeared in multiple films at that time where it's like, it's that guy from the seventy shows they best and ocean's eleven. Rota world. When I first started there was essentially twenty employees in one or two room, feel massive, humble, Brad coming here now and seventeen, or eighteen of them just putting copious amounts of money in a to on and making lots of money. It seemed like an online gambling poker. It was the wild at the time. What was your stance on gambling back, Greg. I mean, I was four played poker so upset. I was not one of those people. Interesting. This is the Wednesday edition of the around the NFL podcast. We got back to the states on Monday evening around five thirty local time, so we are adjusting, but there is no rest for the weary because we are now in the middle of the ramp up to week to. In fact, we have games are a game tomorrow. What is the Thursday night game this week? See, I'm just getting caught and raven Ingles raven. Ooh, banger kings of the north. That's a, that's a whole thing. Now everything's king of north. I'm pretty excited for this cat. That's a good game. It is a good. It's one of the week to Thursday night. It really you depend on what happens week one and the fact that those two teams look pretty spicy in week. One are even going to talk about the game. Well, we'll definitely now that we're getting back into, we can talk about it today, but now that we're getting back into our normal schedule back from the UK we will have our late Thursday night pod will go up. Late Thursday night. That makes sense. And that will have the recap of the ravens and Bengals in addition to a full rundown preview of the week ahead on Sunday and Monday, and this is part of our new schedule. So let's just get a little housekeeping out of the way no longer Tuesday podcast, but don't get upset. We have a Wednesday podcast and filling that spot on Tuesday will be our brand new Twitter show which were really excited about that's gonna launch next Tuesday ahead of week three and what we can promise you is that it is worth checking out because it will be different than the podcast and won't be a video version of what you hear three times a week on the around around the NFL podcast. We want it to be different now, fun, lots of games. Have we figured out what it is yet?.

"In practice they liked that game a little bit of reps in the game in mop up duty but taste i like he took control he found someone who was in love with him that's denver and one out there and aggressively pursued each other i believe it's a good fit for them and denver gets their franchise quarterback without mortgaging their future they have some high priced guys they don't have the salary flexibility that some other teams might have but getting your quarterback and getting that resolve is a good thing for the denver broncos the only thing is we don't know who case it's going to be and previous head coach mike zimmer was questioning exactly who case is going to be as recently as at the nfl combine i didn't see this quote when it happened last week but when i was reading up about this signing i came across i think greg rosenthal included on his piece on nfl dot com that mike zimmer last week at the combine said well are we going to get the case of last year or the case of two years ago now when he said it really didn't mean that much but now that case as a media the first day of age he goes to denver it means a lot more today in real time than it did absolutely because it means that either a the vikings didn't extend him a nicer a good offer or maybe didn't extend him any type of significant offer whatsoever it also just saw that they they've been looking at kirk cousins for the last couple of didn't priority and i didn't wanna wait but i the thing is when we have the pieces of evidence of the things that may or may not have been.

"At his best is among the best quarterbacks in the league and you know listen i get a i'm one who always says the highest paid player is playing the not just the nfl's most important position but sports most important position and so a lion's share punt intended with the detroit lions quarterback of course he deserves a more blame than anybody else on the team does or he deserved more credit when they when they win i also though m not an imbecile i'm not so simplistic that i don't understand that if you're surrounded by lesser talent than you're you probably are are not going to finish the season holding a lombardi trophy all the bottom line is stop the bellyache there this is the only way stop it i think greg rosenthal said this i read a red someday by him saying it's getting 'euroroyalists you don't have to want to do it but you do have to do it you have to keep your franchise quarterback may not be the most exciting than you've ever done and satisfying that you've ever done but it's a require everybody wants to hit on a quarterback and then when you do it there's a price to pay and there's gonna be a continual price to pay and it doesn't really matter if the salaries aren't exactly equal iq aaron rogers the best quarterback he has the highest so it does not how any market works so relax before we jump in on a couple of division previews here the other news vance mcdonald now a pittsburgh steelers in exchange for a fourthround draft pick shipped off to save this go how say you kind of a sneaky interesting trade deal asan eta's in very unstable ursday linda close to the start of the season you're right it does feel very unstable exhibits same did the move to go out and get lift areas green last year it's cruelly position that they want to address and i think he brings.

"Yeah i mean i think you guys know this may be don't but in the nfl you really can't release a player when their injured now by the way you can but then that player will file a grievance and say hey i deserve the rest of my money that you know i was injured when you release me you can't release me injured and then net money gets frozen against the salary cap while the grievance takes place so teams really try to avoid those grievances and so they usually wait until players cleared like matthews was but i got ta i mean the injury was from last year and have his neck was just cleared now i mean i guess cleared is cleared but if i were ryan i would make sure i get a couple of different opinions there but it is amazing that's like oh you're healthy now and you're cut as fridge i let's hope you didn't have any more concussion issues the dolphins really really need him because they have had it rough speaking of that bri stays in other tough blow for the dolphins cornerback tony lippard lost for the season yeah i think greg rosenthal from the around the nfl podcast who i'm friends with him think he mehta hit a good tweet where he said you know the dolphins chargers and ravens lead the preseason pain rankings which is so true i mean the dolphins have now lost his starting corner starting quarterback being middle linebacker for the season already three guys end starting guard ted larson gonna be out for a while if not the whole season.
