"I'm not saying he's greedy or materialistic. But he likes making that money. I think they all do fair. I also think my theory on this with not just pop with any of these guys. Why does Larry Brown keep coming back, right? Like why did George Carl go coach the kings? Why did Phil Jackson when he was not physically able to coach nevertheless decide to do something that he had really no basis for doing in running the Knicks? It's an addiction, Jay. I think they can't walk away because this is so in their blood that they just don't know what to do with themselves without it. And like, yes, the money's great. And yes, Phil Jackson was paid handsomely to, you know, to run the Knicks and pop us being paid handsomely to keep coaching the spurs and George Carl was paid handsomely to go take on the king's disaster and whatever. Like, I don't even, I'm not dismissing that at all. Millions of dollars are not easily dismissed. I think these guys just can't get it out of their system. I think they don't know how to walk away. Also, you'll never be the best at something again. And a lot of those guys you taught me, Larry Brown, even with only one NBA championship. A lot of people thought of him as the best coach out there. I mean, a great coach did great things. I always say the fact that he had a winning record with the Clippers. You know, at the time that he was there with the Clippers, is to meet a great investment to his abilities. You know, we saw what Tom Brady, that's why I don't begrudge athletes when they waffle on retirement or keep coming back after we want them to retire is because they'll never be able to do this again in their lives. And with coaching, you can continue to do it. Even in your 70s, so how do you walk away from something when you're the absolute best at it when you're as successful as Greg papa chats? And when you enjoy it and we talked about the grooming and the instruction and the influence that he likes to have, I get the sense he likes these young he's kind of been invigorated by taking this new team after he had that great rhetoric core for all those years. "For Adam Copeland, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of this week. If you're looking for your man copes well, he got the promotion to the big leagues, folks he's filling in for Greg Papa with John Lund. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of this week, so I will be in and when I'm in this seat that Adam Copeland usually sits in We almost always open the show talking San Francisco Giants baseball. There are first place team right now it is the most exciting. The Giants have been in at least five years and maybe more here in the Bay Area. But after Tuesday's clunker of a loss 81 to the Angels were to save our Giants talk for the next few segments, and we're gonna go into what I thought was really the most compelling sports story. Of the week. Thus far, it was Damian Lillard performance against the Denver Nuggets. On Tuesday night, Damian Lillard. Folks. I'm sitting in the press box and Oracle Park watching the Giants get trounced. And I have this new tradition where Ever since fans have come back in the ball park, one of my favorite things to do around the 2nd 3rd 4th inning. Let's go take a stroll around the stadium. Go check out the bleachers. Go walk behind the arcade. Look, look into McCovey Cove. See what's going on around the ballpark. I cannot get enough of it. It is tremendous have all the fans all the energy back inside Oracle Park and so The vast majority of home games this season. That's what I've been doing in the early innings going to say hi to people checking out the sights sounds scenes around Oracle Park. But I did not do that on Tuesday night because I was glued. To this Blazers Nuggets game. And for good reason. I think many of us were Lakers and the sons were just unwatchable. Last night is the Sun's won by 30. Chris Paul LeBron James both coming out of that game early for different reasons, although maybe LeBron James will say it's the same reason Paul was out with a shoulder injury. LeBron just disappeared during the fourth quarter, nowhere to be found. But again The Lakers and the sons were not the game that the entire national basketball audience was tuned into. It was Damian Lillard and his 55 points his NBA record, 12 Three pointers in a postseason game. What was most stunning about this performance was not the fact that Dame Lillard went off and the Blazers lost. We're accustomed to that we have seen Dame Lillard put a team on his back on Lee to lose many times. In fact, his postseason record again, Steph Curry. Oh, in 10, so we've seen it a lot through the years. What was most stunning. Was the way that the Denver Nuggets defended Dame Willard at the end of this basketball game. Michael Malone, head coach of the Denver Nuggets, is extraordinarily lucky. With the way that this game played out because He not only left Dame Willard Covered man to man at the end of the game. With a three point lead in the opportunity to Fallon, sending the line for two once he did it twice. He got away with leaving Daimler and open at the end of a basketball game. Regulation and in the first of two overtimes. His team picked him up. And that happens when you have Yokich the M V P That happens when no one else on the Blazers is showing a pulse in overtime. My goodness. How do you let that happen? To me. That's the story of the game. It is as much about Dame Willard scoring 55 12 3 pointers, one of those deficient shooting performances you will ever see in an NBA postseason game. 55 on 24 shots. 12 for 17 from three One of the best big game shooters in the history of basketball, or the best big moment shooters in the history of basketball, and you've got M P. J on him. At the end of regulation of the end of overtime. At least double him, at least for someone else to beat you. C. J. McCollum was having a terrible game got dribbled out of bounds and double overtime. How was he? Not the one with the ball in his hands. Damian Lillard 52 minutes on the floor. 55 points, one turnover. How? How does the man who is on the floor for 52 points? With the ball in his hands nearly every single play. Dish with one turnover that is on coaching. That is his much of Dame Lillard spectacular performance and superhuman effort. As it is on the Denver Nuggets, just saying Come and beat us. It was a pleasure on the court to witness that. I mean, how often does an opposing player admit that it was a pleasure to witness That type of a performance. Well, when your teammates score two points on one for four shooting in overtime and double overtime, that's how becomes a pleasure. No gets new. The only player that could hurt the Denver Nuggets their chances of going head 32 in that series was named Willard. And yet the Nuggets were still able to survive in advance there. It was like a Sunday night I had misspoke earlier. I thought he was in Cobb. Oh, easy there in Kabul or in San Diego In the off season, he was in San Diego near me. Actually, we're 10 Miles away, but him calling me and saying, Hey, John, this tray Lance and I was really excited because I was a fan of trays, but he's like, I can't stop watching it. I think there's a natural rhythm and time. Mean to his game as a passer, and he talked about all these things that even talk about the running element to his game for 15 minutes, And then he says, and on top of it, have you seen this guy run the ball and I Yeah, I have and the natural running instincts and so I could tell he was excited and he had made a cut up and he sent it to me that night, And then I couldn't go to bed because I'm up studying his cut and the cut up to have its comments and all and I'm reading the comments. I could tell. I know Kyle well enough. Now he was super excited Now, after that, we kind of committed to look, you know, we we've got to see this process through. We have to look at all the options. We've never seen trade myself for Kyle in person. He only played really one year and I never went out and watched him We hadn't gone to a pro day or anything. So we said, we have to let this process and give the process it's do we have to hear from our old scouting staff, but You know, it's not like us because we're usually incredibly inclusive in terms of asking everyone's opinion and all that we wanted that, But we usually you know, somehow tip off, everyone kind of what we're thinking on this one. We felt it was really important. Like No one can know what worth making because otherwise, we're not going to get their true opinions, and we respect a lot of people in our business. So Kyle and I kind of said this is our deal, and we were in entree early, but we like a guy like Mack Jones. There was all kinds of talk back played out of his mind. I mean, his year last year, it was near flawless and the way he played the position, and I know a lot of people had thoughts on. You know that's way too high for a guy like that. But You know? Did we give it consideration? Sure. We gave all those guys Justin fields. There's so much to like about his game. But trey from an early early on in the process Kind of was the favorite. But we wanted to hear from everyone. We did that. And, you know, when Carl said that far be it from us to stop the rumors, you know, And there were people close to Kyle that we're saying it and so I think everyone just assumed it was true. And it is pretty incredible. You know, in today's day and age. I'm just I'm not passing judgment. I'm just making a comment. There's people have no problem just making stuff up, you know, because they wanna be first. Probably none. You're going to see a lot of just standing and walking back to the dugout. And that's a bargaining chip. I mean, the reason we're not having a universal Dhmh last year, they said it was for health and safety right because you know that they wanted to limit the amount of time people. What was what was the reason why you would engage got off so well? Man. He's Ah, yeah, I really enjoyed talking to him. We had a couple lengthy conversations, um, on a number of things, but He's very thoughtful. Um, he's a progressive thinker, which which I like and Give you something a little bit differently And ultimately for me, it was You know, some of the I felt like I could learn from and that was important in this decision for me. Hey, not sitting really Well, if your times I've interacted with him, he's really impressive that way, So he's gonna help you as a hitter, But you're already a really good hitter. And John mentioned the strikeout to walk ratio is just really impressive. You don't you know the modern game is just let it Let it fly. And you don't worry so much about strikeouts, But your hand eye coordination. Your ability to put the ball in play is so impressive, but you know, a few years ago in 2019 with the Angels you did hit 16 home runs and you know when you add it all up last year, double digits as well. So do you feel like, you know, being around Gabe and the way that they teach hitting here? You're not going to lose any of the you know, contact ability, but you'll be able to drive the ball even a little bit more. Just give me your thoughts about that. That balance between not striking out putting the ball in play but still having the ability to strike back and hit the ball out of the ballpark. Yeah, I certainly hope so. I think for me, I kind of let the flow of the at bat dictate my approach. Um, and also the guy on the mound and the situation. Um, it doesn't always feel like every That is a time to try and drive the ball. Um not that I'm not trying to do that. But I do like the count and the game situation kind of dictates What? I'm going to take a shot like that, Um, guys out there. He's got good stuff. I don't see the ball particularly well out of his hand. You know, I don't see it benefiting me to be taking on a swing and trying to drive the ball. I think the likelihood of that starts toe to go down in those situations. So in those instances, I'm more looking to put the bat on the ball. Barrel it and hopefully find the outfield grass somewhere. But I also think that you know an advantage counts being able to pick my moments and get my a swing off and you know, being able to play every day over the last two years has allowed me to get back to that. I think you know pinch hitting for those four years in Chicago was definitely a different approach. But Being able to be out there every day getting 45 babies. Had had help with that. We're speaking with Tommy Lowe. Stella signed with the Giants officially yesterday. What was it like out there in a pandemic being a free agent, and then I would assume you want to get things going. Nic Vos is the first name that comes out of my mouth and a number one pick or Miami is the one that makes sense to me because they have the third pick. They have a quarterback that would come replace my guy and they have a 2nd 1st round pick this year that you've got to get something. In addition of two lottery tickets So the dish on Watson's that good, he's 25 years old. He's one of the best quarterbacks in the league. Well, I agree. But I guess what I'm saying is, if I'm Houston, I have a situation that is so unique and that I've got a 25 year old who's not even in his prime. He's exactly what everybody is looking for. Now. He's got every trait you could you could possibly want. He's not a bad guy. He just doesn't like the situation which I don't 100% respect. But he is, by all means from what everybody says A good guy is a good word, right? He's 25 years old. He can throw it. He can run he can get into a shoot out. He's has playoff experience. This guy's gonna be your quarterback for the next 10 to 12 years. I love Nicholas. I love Fred Warner. But you've got to have a quarterback you trust in the building. And I think with Kyle, you look at that. You think cheese, but what you pointed out. It's perfect. Because if if for some reason they loved Jimmy, they said, Well, jeez. Then we don't have to take a quarterback. I know it makes Jimmy tick. And the nineties give up three number ones, then to Shawn Watson saying, Okay, I go to a team that's still a Super Bowl contender because look during the season I got told to say injuries, injuries injuries, But the reality is it's injuries. Now look, and this offseason they have a ton to do to sign guys. But I have confidence in this front office, and I think they'll bring the right guys back now.
