National security experts describe a distracted and potentially vulnerable country
"Our president is hospitalized with a virus that he refused to treat as a grave threat. In the final weeks of an election whose results he will not pledge to accept as our nation confronts a struggling economy, an unyielding pandemic and significant reason unrest. The combination of these cascading crises has plunged the United States into a vortex of potential vulnerability that national security experts save probably without president. Current and former senior national security officials tell my colleagues, Greg Miller and currently on that they're worried worried that consumed by our own difficulties America is in a poor position to respond to provocations by adversaries advance its foreign policy interests with support from our allies or serve as a credible model. For. The world of what a functioning democracy is supposed to look like. Nick Rasmussen who served as director of the National Counterterrorism Center under trump and before that Barack Obama said he sees weakness and division. And above all. His word distracted nece. Rasmussen. Said any problem anywhere else is just a third or fourth order problem right now because we're so self absorbed inward-looking and consumed with our own toxicity and as he put it when you're distracted. You make mistakes. Current and former US officials say trump's infection is widely seen overseas as a direct consequence of his troubled handling the pandemic but also part of a broader disturbing pattern of perceived incompetence and turbulence. A former senior US intelligence official and frequent contact with counterparts at other intelligence services said he has been delude with emails all weekend asking what in the world is going on This intelligence official says trump's refusal to wear masks or abide by other protective measures has baffled foreign officials describing trump's symptoms as an extraordinary manifestation of the obtuseness. To the contagion. Now. It's worth contrasting trump's cavalier and reckless personal behavior to that of Vladimir Putin. The Russian president has spent the last six months in almost total isolation at a country estate outside Moscow running his government via videoconference. Those who visit Putin person must first quarantine for fourteen days and obtain a negative test result before they are allowed into the residence then they must pass through a disinfectant tunnel to get inside where strict social distancing is then maintained. Steve Hadley who was national security advisor under George W Bush says that if trump loses, he's most nervous about our enemies like Russia or China trying to come after us during
Xbox Series X Hands-On Preview Round-Up
"Xbox series x hands on previews are up as of this morning. As you all know xbox, they stand out a bunch of xbox series exodus to media professionals They've gotten their hands on they've been playing over the weekend in the last week and they're previews are finally available. So I've assembled basically the avengers of video games writers for this guy got folks from. got. Folks from Gamespot from venture be and I'm going to go through some of the right people have to say some of the things you had to say about xbox series I'm going to start off with Ryan McCaffrey at is and who writes this First, a word on the console itself it is hefty but in a good way when you hold, it feels like premium five, hundred dollar thing for whatever. That's worth when you turn it on the box, the same startup chime the xbox one family of consoles do in a I'm a bit disappointed in that. Honestly I. Get the consistency. It's a sound though it is a nice sound but you want that new you know. You want the news I Will Ryan McCaffrey saying here I get the consistency but I liked new sound while I'm speaking subjectively I think the series x also looks very nice in its article orientation. It looks bold in assertive indoor entertainment centre with the concave green-tinted vent perforations on the top adding a really nice visual appeal. I can't say the same when it's laying on its side, it looks more like a fireplace log. More importantly, this thing is quiet it's almost inaudible when it when it's idol and read debt-reduction to, for instance, is still pretty quiet much more. So than the xbox one X, which gets noticeably louder under full load. Thank God targets me. So soaked that gets me so to especially because this last weekend I've been, I still Greg Miller playstation four pro from the office along with the TV office so I can get that. You Four K. Experience and that thing is loud dude everything sounds like a lawnmower I didn't realize that you my base ps four got loud I. Didn't know that ps four pros got that loud. It's Wild Man I. The thing that I'm most excited about with these new causes coming up is hoping that there's a chance that they're quieter and I love that at least so far it is a good thing to hear. In clear though with The p the PS four pro that he's using the studio he's using that one at the studio because he got loud and he switched it out for one that he had. Okay. So that one is louder than some PS force can be. Four on right now. Yeah. It's my. Rose K. to us oh, is running right now. I love you call your vacuum Uso, your Roomba. That's a really good name for it and actually while we're on this topic like how it looks with Ryan McAfee's right up here folks. No I'm roommates with Michael Higham from gamespot Michael Higham one of the folks who had an xbox series x so I can give the scoop that looks great like vertically it is hefty it does feel it is pretty heavy like it is like a hefty piece of technology mom but anytime I've gone into the living room that thing that has been virtually silent and like yeah, the thing looks like the top with the green accents there looks really nice. I can't imagine that thing on its side because like. Ryan McCaffrey references here. Right. Like on the side. It would look really awkward like that's kind of my take on it. I don't know why anyone would have to have that on the side of Saif Mike space right like I get. In a in a situation where it's like the only have so much room. Height for mine yeah. which is the thing that sucks but it's also this. Thing like I. I'm struggling to think about where I'm going to put mine because I also it's GonNa. Look ridiculous donal but article I just think it's going to stand out and just be weird. So we'll see. Yeah, I'm scared with both this in the PS five I how they look if for people who are GonNa get both because the PS five and all the different. Comparisons. And mockup scene of that thing seems huge. Like seems abnormally big. Like stylish and sleek, and like has a cool feature. Is thing going for it but it seems big and so like trying to figure out how that is going to fit in your entertainment center next to a series x right at least in the same entertainment centre as a series I think it's it's going to be a challenge for some people because those two things are very different designs, very different boxes. Good Luck on that folks,
The Last of Us Part 2 State of Play Impressions
"Hello everyone my name. Is Jonathan Dornbush in this? Podcast beyond episode. I gotTA look at it. Because it's been so long since we last recorded an episode sort of is episode. Six hundred forty-seven of items weekly playstation podcast. Part too. Because boy oh boy have we today. I'm joined this week by the One and only Lucy O'Brien how a year Jonathan Morning. We've had so much so that it's now the afternoon those who didn't my tweet. Who listened or watched the show? We record an episode with the four of us. The whole cast was back together. I thought it was a great episode. We talked about a bunch of stuff and unfortunately due to some technical issues we lost the episode two but Louis Pods like it was so much great discussion so many great jokes going to hear it to the annals of time it's such a shame especially they'll never hear my rendition of holding out for a hero which I use to open the show. It was pretty great but I promise I would never do it again. As ethnic during the show you remember so well one time thing one time one time one time only and no one will ever hear but of course we do have plenty to talk about sorry they wanna get to it. I do want to mention at the time of this. This'll probably be a sugar episode. Do those technical limitations but we do have plenty of last of us are to to talk about. If you haven't seen already I confirmed and we did on Janice walls by twitter that I am playing and going to be reviewing the last of us to John. Their review embargo is June twelfth. At twelve o one am Pacific. I am not allowed to say anything else about the game other than I'm playing in reviewing it We will get into my impressions of the Review of course on June twelfth. So you can look forward to that but can tell us sitting here going hills cool. That's great full of envy me. I'm sorry I cannot wait to get my hands on this game. Well I can't tell you whether or not you should want to not wait or not. But you'll have to wait for my impressions till then but we can talk about is of course the state of play and the recent sort of inside the last of us videos that coming out. We delayed recording the episode this week. Of course to talk about the state of play. We got roughly a twenty minute deep dive into the sequel For those who didn't watch Did Washington the livestream? This is funny the basically saying the same stuff we did this morning. I definitely would recommend going to check out the four K. Like now uploaded version of the video on Youtube. Like if you watch the livestream. It just isn't the same qualities watching pretty gorgeous. Game play on the video as it has in the final player of what we got was a sort of overview of the mechanics. The story of the world a setting the stage by Neil Druckman the director of the game. And then a sort of eight minute chunk of gameplay that was following Ellie three whole SORTA scenario since I'm not wanting to blur the lines of what I can't say but for now. Lay Gimme a sort of overview and then we can get into the nitty gritty of it. How did you feel about the state of play showcase for the last love I it was? It was definitely the most impressive state of play for me. Pencil. A just the way it was presented by Neil And presented with a great deal of compassion by Neil considering the Times that we're in which I really appreciated And it was it was it. Was appropriate like hype. Reveal the not much to reveal obviously Iran noses game exists but like they showed intensive the for we will give it about the world and how you terrific CETERA. It really felt like I was in the crowd at an at an eighth shirk ace and the Made Light. That is kind of off for really from a state of play. I felt it was it was. It was really really really really great. Yeah that just brought to mind. Norfolk wants to talk about when I at this glad. I'm doing it here I back when I was in college. I we buy into a few threes by using school newspaper. And I got to go to this Sony. Press conference I believe where they did. The last one demo which was Joel basically going in and out of the apartment building and speaking around in that brutal showcase ended with I forget who was doing it But they finished it and they were like a real like power stance holding the controller and they dropped the controller like mic drop dead and walked off stage at the final kill and this game play sequence though evoked a lot of the same moment of like the you know to where we over a lot of the industry does but like the visceral nature of this cop out like this the sequel really seems to be leaning into the every little moment is going to matter. Every moment wants to be evocative whether it's gruesome brutal. Or you know by the skin of your teeth you use TV escape. Every little bit wants to be impactful which is ambitious but seems to be paying off in that demo. Yeah like I feel like I'm going to need to go for a massive run and then like sink three whiskeys before I stop playing this game. You know what I mean. I'm going to have to get some sort of energy out of me into the be in a very kind of calm head. Space in order the Because it does. It's we've always known that the lost of US Brutally unforgiving well Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah. But again. I always forget that these characters that I love Massive shakes I do really care about the face of these characters. I do really care about what happens to the majority that they go on and I think one of the most profound moments for me in this particular demo was win l. e. the Veto would be working woman. She will fit forever. The immobilisers woman playing hotline Miami on a station Vita before the last thing she does west gets killed. How did die playing me? All that's heartbreaking on so many levels I'm sure it's how Greg Miller wants to go out one of the moments. That really reminded me of the series kind of eating hot. You know it's it's it's humanity Is when Ellie does stabbed this woman in the neck and it's it's gross in of sudden it's easy and the whole tussle is sort of frustrating. You know any kind of since. La's frustration in that moment. And she says that was dumb. Like you know something like that was. That was really stupid. That was really don and like yes that that whole thing was dominoes on. This area was like that that women didn't need to to try to turn around and try and kill Ellie like it was also unnecessary. Wholesome scenario seems frustrating and it was also like the way she said it was kind of like placing it's been used like it was slightly like bleakly. Funny you know and it just again. It just reminded me of L. E. is this is Ellie. I flipped I got like she. She is she is funny. She is You know there is so much of humanity tour. She's like despite the fact that she's very much being presented as like a much much more. I don't WanNa say cold-blooded but I guess there's no other word for it. Like she's much more a she she's had to survive. Long time in this very unforgiving world like Biz chief. Haden's I really get that sense but at the same time she still ellie and I really just that little low really brought that harmful in this in the state of play
What we want to see from 2K Games’ new NFL game in 2021
"The NFL may finally be willing to open things up to some competition after more than fifteen years of exclusivity especially if by that point. Two K has demonstrated the same kind of talent for football that it applied in bringing its basketball series to the apex of Sports Gaming. Lot of words there. There is big news though. This is finally happening yeah. Nfl Yeah Yeah play with NFL BUT NFL. Player's stats normal. If you ever. I know a lot of football games when you do your SC- nfl logo and then the NFL Players Association. Yeah exactly but so. What does that actually mean? What do you think that this resulted because it jesuits like games? Yeah exactly yeah totally but cool but like I feel like that's not anything that's really going to move the needle like the people that are the miss. Nfl Touquet aren't going to be like well. This is this is what I'm looking for. Sure and I think even while doing wrong it's great reporting from cement and giving you context this moreover e as existing deals they expect to expire in twenty twenty one. Nfl Season Right. Yes it does I have. I don't see what future in two thousand twenty one early. Twenty twenty two right. We're looking at where the NFL's like alright. Yay You've done enough time to open this up and we're going to get out of this agreement like Madden makes money hand over fist right. Why would they want to rock that boat? Why would they want to do anything to that extent? It is interesting to see it all shake out of the last twenty years where we're now at a place where We've been at a place where. Ea hasn't football and to K has basketball clear in some ways forced the best entries in their respective sports. I feel like this is the type of thing that isn't going to result in anything worthwhile. Yeah eating is just going to end up with Arcade Games. They don't care about that. Which like a playground was cool. I played it for a bit but like it wasn't. Nba St John. It's just one of those things where it Kinda just feels like a a lesser than experience. And that sucks. I don't want that to be the case but in my experience it has been And people love those games. But I'm not one of them. Sure hands I feel like Arcadi. Sports Games is something I like. I don't care about what players are in it like it to me just more fun about like. Oh just make the game fun and sure having the teams and stuff is like nifty. I guess I duNno was interesting about it is. It's been fifteen years and so I think this is a story that gets us as old people going right. I remember what a big deal it was when he got the rights. I remember how good the two K. Games were and how much my friends loved him and how Bullish Two K. Was about it where they what they were selling. And I'm GonNa Kinda funny dot com slash around. Come get me. They were selling the last two K. Game they did for like what like thirty bucks to the Fifty Bucks that Madden was twenty bucks to the yeah. It was like they were making hardcore moves to make people come play their game over Matt and and that was awesome exciting and it was the challenge of you know when you get when you get into a monopoly. You get very set in your ways right. And so I I hate the matters. Just update every year you know Blah Blah Blah Blah. Like I know how hard the madden team works to make madden as good as it can be every year but they are in a nine month cycle and so it is a lot of features that they start working on get pushed to the next year Ravin beyond that one year whereas if you had competition you had two teams pushing each other. I think you could see something really cool happy. I don't see that happening out of this deal I I mean again. It's been fifteen years. The people made the two K. Football Games football games. I don't think you've been grinding. That accident. Still at two K for that long. Yeah they moved on to the project of the teams are. The things are a lot of them. Probably work on that and I bet in so to be here now having this conversation. Yeah you Katie things. But it's not like you're going to suddenly see this resurgence. I don't see what they can even if you go out and your two K. And you kill it out in these. Nfl Arcadi Games. I guess I understand. Okay cool like maybe you've proven yourself but in reality it's going to be the NFL's and to be like cool. Keep making these things like this. And I don't mean this in a derogatory way but these games are gonNA kill on switch. You know. It's like this could be to switch out like you know. They have been putting a lot of support towards the switch but the game like Wolfenstein supper. Never GonNA run as well as they do on the show. The playground games can capitalist pigs. Gummy ESPN NFL to cave. Espn NFL two K. Fives price was twenty bucks that year. Madden launched for four for fifty bucks there. You Go however I was insane man. Yeah Anikin J. MT. Has An interesting wrinkle to think about Tim. Jeremiah tricks exactly. Nfl IT'S UK is coming back but won't be assume focused game. This has me thinking both man and the ww two K Games have felt both felt same year. After you're not really innovating between games. Eighty w all the wrestling has been very open about wanting to make a game and with the relaunch. Xfl being funded by WBZ's. Vince McMahon. It won't be long assuming the XFL returns next season until an xfl game is made could and xfl and in E W game if they're good games that sell well force EA and to K to finally put finally up their game in making madden an WBZ games to prevent people from switching over to newer better products. No I mean here's the thing there's going to be an XFL game period. Yeah if there is an xfl game. It's not GonNa be good. It won't be soon for sure and yet and also won't be soon. I I mean there's a lot of jobs here if xfl makes it to a second season does it. I've paid no attention except what was happening. Yeah and you're not paying attention still going on right. Yeah Yeah So I I don't really see a game on the e W side. I'm really excited at the idea that they might do the thing. The Greg Miller dream right and just like let's just make no mercy is with us but I feel right now. It is legitimately all talk. That game doesn't exist yet and it just kind of like talking about it. And they're gonNA William do existence. I I do believe that. But that's going to be similar to the playground games and stuff where it's going to be a fun thing and the people that are in doing a really in love it and there's a chance that if it is really that good that audience can be fairly large and it could be kind of a big head and got very well review if you could. Yeah you could recapture some of the Gloria and sixty four wrestling games. I think you breakthrough. Nobody cared not nobody. But the people you breakthrough don't care that's eighty w these cool down for wrestling totally totally and I think that out of the twenty dollar download -actly exactly I feel like that. Could then you know? Open the doors and push towards. Wwe coming in being like all right. We're GONNA make mercy to yeah. That could be a fun thing. But I don't think that's GonNa Really Affect Mad at all it's own level. It's like did this question kind of implies that Madden isn't doing well in reviewing well it is you know. Madden and correct me. If I'm wrong isn't facing any of the issues that a ton of the other sports games are over the last couple years of the micro transaction stuff being as ridiculous as it seems to be fearful or even NBA team in Madden. There that I that FIFA has has so many problems with but I don't hear people here. I'm sure anything with the station platforms. A has the option to be abused period. That's any game. So yeah that's not inherently bad. It's just bad how could be in the game. But the core Gameboy of Madden Games. Great Right. Oh Yeah Yeah I don't know hasn't changed much in the last ten years but it has. That's the thing is it's glacial and it changes in the physics move and this thing that and so it's like I mean I think if you looked at ten years ago actually played it versus you played and now I think you would be like. Oh wait hold on. Maybe I guess I'd rather go back on. Madden two thousand ten because I was a good game
Remembering 'Star Wars' Producer Gary Kurtz
"Recently I spoke to Greg Miller. He's the author of Star Wars Memories. Someone who is involved in the very beginning of the Star Wars Universe and we talked about Gary Kurtz. Yay Gary does not get. I feel the credit he deserves. I mean not to take anything away. From George. Of course airy was part of the creation of star wars he worked with George on American graffiti and they were sitting in. I don't know where they were sitting. But they wanted to go see a movie. And this was in the early Seventies. I GUESS. Like seventy two seventy three something like that and the way you decided what movie to go back then if you look in the newspaper to see what was playing answer Back when we still had newspapers And they look through the paper and they couldn't find anything they wanted to say And so they decided they should make a movie like they wanna see which was going to be like a science fiction adventure movie and at first they went. They approached universal where George had an overall deal yet. A three picture deal based on American graffiti about doing Flash Gordon because the rights to Flash Gordon. But they would not. They were not interested. They wouldn't sell the right So they decided to do something else. Which was star wars or Star Wars than idea that Georgia come up with in college? Although it significantly different as produced than his original version in some ways he was both the technological brain and the spirit behind Kerry was a very spiritual guy and He's been credited by George and others for really having come up with the whole concept behind the force George wanted had the force. But Gary was figured out how it worked and how it played through everything and he was. I. I worked on a lot of movies over the years where a lot of directors and producers and Gary was by far the most knowledgeable filmmaker he actually he was not a deal guy though he did make deals he actually had been a camera man. He had been found man He was in U. Usc Film School with George. He was the one everyone always went to when there was a production difficulty when there was how are we going to get this stunt? He really knew how to get the movie made and on the budget they had available My own so yeah. He really isn't as credited as he should be. And I I do have a section you know in the book about Gary just became rightly so uses well known if he should be
The D.I.C.E. Awards Are Coming This Thursday
"The the Dave awards are taking place on Thursday February thirteenth. You guys can watch that on the Internet. I believe it's on. Twitch is going to be on Youtube. It's GonNa be a variety of media outlets websites in friend of the show one Greg Miller and just control about our BACO seen again. They're great good. One liked it a lot because it's like it doesn't have any marketing and it's they let the speeches go on really long dice ones pulling my favorite award. Show some yes they are. Peer voted which is unlike the game awards. It's which happens in the fall which we are part of because we are one of the voting juries at the game awards. It's great because it's pure nominated. Peer judged impure voted for all of the the categories. And so. I think it's really awesome to kind of see like who the industry is voting for. And I think it's going to be a very different group winners than what we saw back in December have we seen it on an. He's like he's telling lies nominated for a bunch of stuff. They did release the nominees. I believe that's one that I feel like the industry really likes then most people are like what is this game. WHO ooh? Yeah so that was the gain that was all right. It was all full motion. I it's a follow up to Ho Story. No not a follow up. I guess it's just the boys game similar. Yeah Yeah like everyone's like oh it's so well written it's incredible but it didn't get any love with game wants sure. Did that did not I thought no. We didn't vote for that we. We didn't need to be on the board and we reached out for for that I- it's good. It is good. It's a good game. That's what happens to dump for. That's true that's true. I do have the dice award finalists. They are available if you go to interactive dot Org. You guys is can look at them all for yourself. There's a bunch of different categories. I'm not going to go through all of them here. How about I just read who the finalists are for? Game of the year her so the category is filled with some interesting options. When I looked at it the first time and they have a portable the game of the year category cool? So let me get down to the bottom here okay. It's control by remedy in five. Oh five deaths stranding Sony interactive in Kojima productions reductions disco by Szott loom or Z. A.. Um I have no idea what the but some the outer wilds by appear and Moebius digital and untitled goose game by panicking house house able to know resident evil to attack goes game so the fact that Cerro is not there but untitled goose game is is a little bit of a head scratcher to me because while untitled goose game very fun and whimsical really breaking the mold with game design. SACRA was my game in the I feel like the dice board. I don't know who it is that actually votes would probably get control that that would be my guess I would guess control to control or maybe death stranding
Victor Lucas is a Video Game Industry Treasure
"If you've missed Victor Lucas before Kinda funny. Yeah period. Because he's been on a bunch of stuff electrically around of course my brand. I've been doing it forever. Twenty five years. This was that honestly at the end of this year. It's twenty five. Full years have been all the threes adulation there thank you. And so it's a surreal thing when you hit twenty five years of the same email address at the same job most part personally. Of course everything has been different as we've grown from a weekly show we went to a daily TV show and then we had all all kinds of growth that way. Yeah and then we've had shrink down a little bit in this sort of Internet age and you have deal with Youtube and streaming and But one of the things that we did this year as we moved into cafe space at the Vancouver Film School so awesome which is an actual public space. That people can come and watch the show in and of course all kinds of incredible guests come through Vancouver uncover. They're working on movies and TV shows and video games and comic books and I've been able to tap into that so we've had people like animators from Spiderman into the spider versed. Uh David haters been on SAM has been on a garbage. I love that K- t- terrible garbage on kind of funny because it's great and I love of days gone by the way I thought that game was awesome and I thought I wasn't going to your favorites a- It's great to have this this forum where people can come in You know chat chat with everybody. That's been my favorite thing because I remember not the last time but one of the first times you came through especially when the new studio it was right as you were like pivoting and I'm doing youtube for the first time I I don't know what I'm doing I I still don't sort of watch. You grow in thrive going from TV and having been thirteen guy forever. Yes because I mean that's how I knew you. That's how I and I know that's how Canada knows you you walk the streets. Candida Europhobes. Celebrity people have grown up watching you. It is surreal and that really happened when we went daily. Well you know when we were a weekly show it was on the weekends and you had to be individual games when we went daily and started talking about all kinds of other entertainment. Suddenly families were watching the show together and I could palpably feel that whenever I walk around and I still get a little bit of that because people were on for so long yeah. I'm grateful to all of our partners. That then all the viewers that have been watching. Yeah that's always my favorite thing when you come by the fact that the chat in the comments are usually put on either the victim who is being like. Oh my God Lucas. Because they know you and they've again bet you've been doing this for so long doing it so well Oh and also you're one of the few people in the games industry. No one ever talked shit about. Everybody loves me. I had a little shit at this year. which is even that like? I think it was the normal thing where it was Okay clearly this isn't every started going crazy understandably. Yeah and it was like all right cool but that's not what Vick we do know. That was the whole thing. That's how vic would do this. Yeah Yeah it as an entrepreneur and I know that you're you have the same kind of perspective is what when you build something you know hard it is to build things. Yeah so when I interview people or I critique things I have that perspective I have that kind of awareness fairness that people don't set out to build shitty things and so you don't have to come in with this binary kind of attitude that this sucks and this is great. This sucks and this is awesome and so much of honestly. I don't want to throw shade at Youtube but so much of what I see on Youtube is is that it's like people just want to pile on the want to celebrate something too much or hate hate something too much. You know. It's funny where we have a bunch of inside baseball questions later about values and how it's all comes together but I do think that a lot of that comes with Youth in not knowing exactly what you're doing so I don't mean you in terms of age but in terms of I'm going to be a reviewer I'm GonNa Review Stuff I look back at my reviews from two thousand seven to two two thousand ten thousand dollars in cringe because like I m being mean and I m being. I am ignoring how long it took these people to make something. Because I didn't know that at the time and that you also want to set set up a you're setting up your own boundaries. On how you're going to look at this stuff as well you're defining your viewpoint and all you have is that moments moments in time and that feels like a totality. It feels like I've got a really greg whole life so I know what game and then Game Rule Ford another five ten years ears and your perspective changes for sure but you know honestly I I say this a lot into People that watch our stuff is Take these opinions in and get to know the individuals which I still firmly believe could Cisco Niebuhr were you know they were the the guy. That's that's what I based reviews on the run on which it was a key part of what electric playground heart and soul was. They were The Best of the In the game and they really understood how to use their personalities to help flavor their material and you get to know them as individuals and you would sort of base your opinion on that and I think that's still holds true to this day. I think it's really important into not just blindly trust any viewpoint or any brand but get to know the individuals and see how your tastes align and then you can kind of use that as a a bit of a guiding star for what you're gonNA sample one hundred checkout. That's the power of what we do now. Right the fact that you go to youtube channels podcasts websites because you like personalities you understand what that personality analogy is the fact that you know to using example from kind of funny this year on the subway one of our best friends was able to go in and post. It'd be like moonlighters. Greg Miller ask game name and I looked at that and I'm like they know me incredibly well so I am is amazing. I grabbed it and I was like. How did I miss this? Some puzzles to solve but lots of Little Fund tongue-in-cheek details the fact that the main character looks like a block version. Asian of David Harbour from stranger. Things I love it. It's so endearing and it's so funny like you run into this DJ and he wants new music so you go into a record shop when you buy a bunch of music and you bring to this party and it gets the party thump in and then you get some money that you know. It's just lots of little sort of clockwork intricacies like that but really make the game charming charming. It's awesome a very very excited to be happy. 'Call of Duty' Will Have Battle Pass
"Like you should go back to racing Dave fixed a lot of the issues some of it is still egregious but it's not as straight up I've poked defense and then punched the fence and the kind of lineup leaving lay on the fence for a bit and like all right we're resilient we can kind of deal with a bit more than subscription service you're choosing to buy this or not but it's essentially like it's a loop box that's not we're not loobox the mail service sent to your house base and that's when the core thing that you came for is no longer what it was and I think that that is the balance and need to find is giving people enticing things that aren't monetize it it's how you mark is it like it is not just a business model it's also game designed behind that business model got is one hundred percent and especially when we've been talking about Apple Arcade Z. how the game is being affected just to be able to make more money right and I feel like that's not a bad thing it just can easily be a bad thing when you let balanced kind of one way or the other and that's where alternate forms of revenue come in where they can only do that because of the subscription nature of apple arcade right with the subscription nature of battle passes they be allowed to have a little bit more leniency in not having a nickel dime you every single where the every single place that they can right we'll see how this law like I'm curious how this works out for them revenue wise yeah because if it if it's a huge failure ever doing this again going right back to lou boxes but I mean it's also called easily the best selling game every year this game is a reboot of sorts of the best popular ones yeah not necessarily on comedy but like the one you think of duty so hopefully this one actually works out for them I'll tell you what's not working out is seventy six is delaying disease this comfortably post from Bethesda and honestly when I opened his dock this morning usually when I'm hosting I make the dock Greg had already made the dock and he put this story injustice story so I'm guessing this is shout out to Greg Miller who really wants to talk about this but can't right now really wants to like fall and seventy six van is being want to like a game that people don't like that next that's right for so long still try forget there's video evidence of this watch our coverage where he is like stoked it's like all right but hey you can hear one or two more times yeah thirty six is delayed the NBC so I think it was last he three Bethesda announced that hey we've heard you start making quested fallout seventy six that don't just have humans are like human players but also NBC kickers that are like written like an actual fallout game so that was opposed to come this year today with post that was saying we've been hard at work on fallout seventy six this year including our biggest free update yet waste landers were excited about how as leaders coming together but it's going to need more time to do the Best most Polish update it can be so we're delaying it released a Q. One next year good news there's no huge games coming out next thing to distract you from playing fallout certainly not in the first four months of the year we continued to reevaluate arch in change our processes to make sure that we're doing our hit star quality bar and yours we adjudged delay but we know you're worth the extra time wastelands are turning out to be one of the largest expansion we ever done and it changes their entire world with human ABC's returning we'll be sharing details over time but here's a first look at some of what's to come and waste energy could read the full blog post for pictures and all that stuff but I wanna taking the snark aside trying to get around the nation tippety here I just feel like this is such a wasted opportunity of a game because this could have been something special could have been something that people really latched onto in love and I think all that would've took is a little bit of patients and not needing a game at e three I think but that's the kind of they panicked a hit a point where the realized Osha we're one of the big dogs now we have to have a three press conference we're GONNA WE'RE GONNA do it we're going to do it every year and I feel like that works for them because they have enough of a library that they can talk about here's the deal see updates to the game that came out last year here's a couple of VR experiences Houston brand new titles to look forward to but that one big but here's what's coming this year and here's what you should be excited about because that worked so well for them multiple times and when it got to this this was the game nobody was really asking for this which they needed to prove why was worth it more than anything and as we've seen with the launch they didn't do that right this game could have been special instead of it coming out a year ago it came out next year when these things from the get would've made sense but that's the thing I think Mr Got Kinda drunk on file responses 'cause like those games have always been a little broken in different ways and how much that like it depends on your experience of how much a little means but I think they saw that it was not reacting or the initial releases were going well but they put in so much marketing work and preordered and all that stuff like well we got her as of this year so I remember last year Todd Howard or not let's see three two zero says what would you do differently what has that is as I would have put this early access for ear I which is the logical thing to do in this the thing they're talking about now should have been hey we're ready to launch fallout seventy six this is the game yeah this is the full release aim and that would have made so much more sense I feel like people would have accepted a bit more early access still kind of a dirty word dirty word especially on the console side of things but that would in so much smarter and so much more beneficial to them in the situation we're in now where honestly this is surprising headline I think Odin not that interesting it's like who's besides Greg Miller really bummed about this right now I don't WanNA clown for delaying a game for Polish reason they should do not you should totally do that always but also I kind of wonder do you think something's happening because they this is apparently having some development trouble and the thing they realized before the Game Lodge Oh which is doing we're working on this thing but also a can we Nakimora left or left we don't order what they really know what went on there she's still looking for work and I saw her tweeting being a platinum games today interesting awesome it she would go back because he was working on being ETA and all that suffer really but there's also doomed got delayed till next year so I kinda wonder liking all their big games they were like they showed this past he three are now not coming out this year here's the thing I I don't take those things as a bad sign I I think that if anything that is them listening to me it just gave where it's just like hey there's no rush on this stuff like but does the are a known entity people like them people respect him they got through the followers six per fluffy did they do like I think that they did in the sense that when it was happening it felt like they were never coming back it felt like they were straight up cancelled like no one he's going to want to watch or cover as conference again and then they came back and he three months later with things the show but I feel like the answer to that is in are they are they good at announcing new games it's when they had show the next fall out the next rose whatever are the question's GonNa be are you gonNA fuck this up again yeah and I don't think so because those games the elder scrolls the core fallout we got some time on those I think that doom needs to be good for that to not be an issue right and I feel like they can take they don't need them to come out this year we don't need the games this year granted next year it's probably going to get lost show but people are so excited for that that I don't think that's good win to really take the people wanNA play maternal are GONNA play it regardless right and that game just needs to be fantastic and I believe it's going to be and if they need them need more time for that I think that they're very smart call taking it if they would've put out this year and it's it was fine I don't think there's a chance to turtles going to be bad right if it was just twenty sixteen again yeah then I think that that could that could be more like a but if they come out with some baller shit which I expect them to next you I don't think anybody's really going to be worried about elder scrolls are fallout come twenty twenty two or whatever big doom fan I like doom twenty sixteen I'm a big fan of doom in general just the style of arcade shooters and stuff so are you a big animal crossing van not at all okay I was going to ask you which of those who games you play over that animal switch between the two because I know animal crossing is going to do the thing of you've done all this stuff come back tomorrow I will give you more tasks all right just switch to killing demons and hell this might be the first animal crossing that I even give a attempted shot what was the what reasons have you never clicked his look at him I this does not look like anything I wanna do it looks like chores I don't like I don't like collecting twigs I play video games to get away from chores played shores to get away from real people like dogs it's funny on collect thon game whereas animal crossing you're literally doing fucking shores are I honestly the Games are more similar than you would think I know that's bullshit the no all right we'll see what happens mark twenty-first we'll see who talks about one all right persona franchises surp- center franchise surpasses ten million copies sold this is in venture be by Jeff Grubb is taking nearly a quarter of a century but the persona series has hit ten million copies sold that includes all games in the series the main role playing adventures as well as spin offs like a Dungeon crawler persona q two developer atlus revealed as milestone in a blog post are as Japanese persona website today is revealed RPG royal is deal replacement for October thirty first and it is certainly going to advertise total sales going forward persona growing franchise for Sega and Atlas the game first game before Golden Get it together and Jeff Grubb I know you're listening Vida since then the series has found a larger audience personify for example surpassed two point seven million copies sold all on its own okay tim how do you sort of series I don't care I haven't feeling if I were to jump into it I really really dig it my like final fantasy What's I like poke them on a lot and and also like anime a lot persona seems like it would be up my alley I also just can't commit to these Super Long Games drives me what's but you'll you'll collect all of the Vulcan whatever's and smash brothers spirits collective it's a quick fifteen minutes every time they knew one some say someone percent five is one of my favorite game it yeah that's true so you should go to sleep ten million copies sold what surprises me is that seems like a low number for the entire franchise but then when you stop and think about it like this just
Murder trial of former Dallas officer pauses until Monday
"And now the murder trial of a white Dallas police officer who shot and killed an unarmed black neighbor is in recess until Monday we get the latest from correspondent Shelley Adler. defense attorneys presented their case for about two hours Saturday among those testifying former Dallas police officer Greg Miller who became the homicide commander for the Dallas police before he retired it's my opinion that in this case that ms Geiger thinking she was in her own apartment fire shot at a person the chief that was a threat to her in that was reasonable the jury is considering whether amber Geiger is guilty of murder a lesser crimes such as manslaughter or criminally negligent homicide they could also find her not guilty in the
Rockstar North and a Tax Conundrum
"The news that Rockstar have not paid U._K.. Corporate Tax in ten years and hand in fact have had more than forty two million pounds in tax relief how Iraq's are respond and and have the permanently damaged their reputation Michael breaks you they will not respond. They will not say anything or continue to take the money until the government says hey we're changing. This isn't how this works. You gotTA assume this has also lead to more jobs in the U._K.. So like if that's the case this has been a positive thing right. You'd like to believe right but then we have the thing in there about the bonus pool of three point whatever billion dollars per spread out possibly over many years ear foster a ton of money. That's that's the what we have here in. Greg Miller is opinion. If you don't mind is just a government program as usual not thought all the way through <hes> not the quick enough to be able to adapt how things Jay probably did mean it to be that hey we want to help foster video game development here and to their credit. I would assume that has happened. I would assume you have seen smaller medium-sized studios do that and when a smaller medium-sized studio does that right then you usually do see that all right cool wow we don't have to pay taxes over paying us more percent of taxes which means we talk about all the time now for our taxes at all but just you know with jobs or whatever right we now have this extra income. That is an extra income. We're thinking gain weight the line our pockets and give everybody a bonus or something it's like Oh. That's a salary that can be. How often do we talk about that? That's somebody's salary we could if we did this and did that move this that can be another head that we could use. We're a small scrappy studio like that right. We're trying to do more and bigger things and bring more people in give opportunities to people that's what happens with small and medium or a small studio even goes to being a medium and Amigos to being a large right but then yet is the question with a rockstar owned by to take to interactive millions of people working. King in all these different things for take to the world where do those dollars and sent to add up and where do they go. Are they really being spread out and bringing more jobs and I don't get me wrong Kevin. I think you're right that yeah. You've seen people get hired there. Regardless right I think again that's the cultural impact Russia. You don't need any extra so what's incentive right which is fine piece of media ever right yeah financially speaking. It just seems like a mistake in the in the U._k.. Cover it seems like just a program that wasn't thought through enough war. Maybe it was maybe we I mean again. This is report from Kesse US pontificating and then based on on the tax watchdog group in the whole tax watchdog is define glaring weird airs in British Tax Law Right. Here's one of them but again. Maybe you get you trace it back to the source of the guys with the whigs parliament I think our hugh prime minister talking knocking about it and they're just like hey. It's not even about small things we just want people making video games here and so yeah the one of the biggest games in the world wants to be made here and we don't pay taxes which sounds weird again but maybe they're talking American corporate law and how much these motherfuckers pay.

"The CIA and other agencies are seeing this this activity by Russia. They're responding to it, and they're thinking, wow, this is much bigger deal than anything we've ever seen in an election or an any kind of endeavour in American life, and they're seeing Trump's behavior in there. They're worried that things could be much worse than even they are beginning to understand through all of this intelligence. That's flowing means it's really easy to understand. I think in hindsight why they were why they were so pent why John Brennan in August of two thousand sixteen holes up in the seven four in his office for two days just shuts the door and goes through all of the agencies Intel on Russia and comes out of that sort of shaken and calls the White House, and and says I need to speak with the president immediately. I'm Michaela Fogel. And this is the law fair podcast January twelfth two thousand nineteen last week. Jack Goldsmith got on the phone with policy prize winning Washington Post journalist, Greg Miller to discuss Miller's new book, the apprentice, Trump, Russia and the subversion of American democracy. Miller's book chronicles Russia's efforts to interfere in the two thousand sixteen US presidential election and the interactions. Among members of the Trump campaign transition and administration and officials and representatives of the Russian government Goldsmith and Miller discussed how Miller approached writing the book the extraordinary series of apparent connections and contacts between Trump associates and the Russian government and what Russian President Vladimir Putin might have gained from his brazen. Interference in the two thousand sixteen US presidential election. It's the law fair podcast episode three hundred eighty one Greg Miller on the apprentice Trump. Russia and the subversion of American democracy. So I'm here with Greg Miller to talk about his book, the apprentice, Trump Russia and this version of American democracy, Greg thanks for chatting with me. Thanks for having me. So the book is amazing because it takes the dozens of disparate strands of what I will call the Russian influence operation on the American election, and all of the collateral activity and brings it together into one coherent, even novelist story that just kind of marches and sings and makes everything makes sense. So tell the process about how you put all the stuff together and the takeaways from bringing years, I guess almost over year of reporting disparate strands of information into one book. Yeah. That's a great question, Jack, I think. You know, one of the one of the purposes of doing the book was just basically what you laid out. There was that this story was so sprawling and it was so difficult to follow. Even for those of us who were in the middle of trying to cover it at the time that we felt like it it really needed to be told a in a chronological way. And in a narrative way for to make sense to people we had publishers coming to the post in the middle of two thousand seventeen interested in getting post riders to to deliver a story book about about that crazy year. And so that's sort of where this came from for me. It was really surprisingly I opening to when I first sat down about a year ago now to start mapping this out and build out a very long and detailed chronology, and it ended up being forty five or so pages because chronology of events that was just a chronology of events. Yep. And it was opening to me because he would. Would just see as I laid things out in in the sequence in which they occurred instead of the sequence by which we learned about them things jump out at you. Connections jump out into the wouldn't have or didn't at the time and the best the best example of this to me is is the instance during the campaign, the famous or infamous moment when Trump says Russia, if you're listening hope you can find these emails, of course, now because of Muller's work, we know that Russia was listening in that Russia's intelligence services mobilized an effort within hours to direct spear phishing attacks at Clinton, computer networks. Right. So that event is something for me also. But I like the puzzle for me to have their lots of puzzles Doba grazes and tries to resolve one the puzzle..

"All good point. I think that the idea that there are hidden financial entanglements is a much more compelling one. I think we could learn a lot about that from Muller. You we've seen him terror. Paul Manafort, Rick gates limb from limb by going through their financials, and I mean Trump's whole financial empire has so many. We. Weird entanglements with borderline criminal entities and fraud. You know, people convicted of fraud, and and really scary overseas person personas and stuff, it's. He also goes to such enor- great lengths to hide all that from the public fusing to put out his tax returns that everything about that tells you that there's something there. And but I also think that there's also a fairly simple explanation against during us right in the face, which is that Trump just personally hit in his DNA. He admires people like Putin that he thinks that that's that's weirdly to him an example of a strong leader he tries to emulate Putin. I I actually think that if you gave Trump the choice right now enough power to make a decision on whether he could kind of replicate Putin's arrangement here for himself. You know, meaning he wouldn't have to worry about a Muller investigation or an antagonistic Justice department or an antagonistic press corps or or recalcitant con Republicans in congress. He would take that in a second. You know? Yeah. Before we go, I one. To ask you more about that. Because as a member of the free press in just as an American do you worry about what Donald Trump might do if he's backed into a corner on this? I worry about a lot of things. I mean, I worry that the signal that Trump sends over and over again about the dist, you know, just the assault the daily attack on the very principles of that that guide what I try to do and what so many professional journalists in this country, tried to our our devotion to truth, and fact, and fairness I mean in and he just sort of attacks that endlessly and devalue it, and then and degrades it his incitements we saw again, an example just this week of him praising a re a Republican candidate who had beaten a reporter. Yeah. And Trump thinks that's was convicted of assault who've seen him really dismissed being very dismissive about one of my colleagues at the post. Yeah, I don't see how they're going to continue to produce anything if they've laid off their remaining staff out. I mean, that's that's the unfortunate truth of it, which is a shame. Jen, looked to the counter and then flip the page and I'm like, oh my God. This is how does this happen? Here's what I want to say. I'm wondering host, Greg Miller alongside at Tim gettys from now on baby blues, Tim gettys. No, we don't call him that Kevin. No, I if you're a viewer in audio listener, you are a child of some degree. You know what I mean? You're young. You're a young person hold onto the days. Oh, I remember being a kid and be like, this is going so slow. I can't believe that I have to wait full three episodes of Batman, the series tomorrow. We'll come pick me up from grandma's or whatever, and I understand we're trying listeners that young we way too much for that. But in general, even college, the amount of time, how slow a day was, I mean in a good way most time embrace that long. Enjoy all the fucking free time. Yeah. Yeah. I can't believe it August goes balloons. Now, of course, life is so cool. This really cool as an adult. We have a million opportunities. Everything's amazing. I got him. Youth is wasted on the young. That's it. You, you know what I mean moves pretty fast. Yeah. If you don't slow down smell the roses fares be would want mom. His ass is so tight. If you put piece of colon it, it would turn into a diamond. You didn't know where I was going, didn't I forgot that line from various. "Thanks to a more robust chat system. Users can outpost gifts, video social links, and pictures easily something which was an absolute nightmare. Before the update of the last couple of years, discord has become the default chat program platform for gamers, though it looks like valves, definitely trying to win people back to the steam platform. Greg Miller, is this the Instagram story to discord Snapchat. Ooh, look at you. Now I'll put it out there to begin with. We're talking about two communities that I barely in rarely touch. Okay. I would might actually be no. I think the fact that discord covers everything matters, right. Like for me, it was when I fell down the rabbit hole of destiny to popped over to the kind of funny fan run dischord, right. I think it's kinda funny Joey kinda funny dot com. Slash discord kinda funny dot com slash discord, where you know, we are rarely there. It's just run by the community and I popped in and then find out about the kind of funny guardians channel and jumped into that and played with them and talked with them. And when we do. We play the multiplayer games here online, like five thirteenth and stuff like that. We run it through discord. You know what I mean jumping in there, but I'm playing that through PS four. And I think when cabinet and I were initially, what are we playing Kev wasn't monster or something else. Grand theft auto. We were using discord as well. Yeah, yeah. So we were using it off our phones and I think it's a great thing. It's a great program, but it's it falls in that camp of even though I'm putting a lot of multi-player games more than ever. I still am not a big chatter, right? Like that's the thing we switch works really well for us because we're all here in the office and then we go home. It's that thing even then it's like Kevin will invite me and I'm like, just wanna see here in the client and do this is not gonna be a good experience jump together in squad up. I can't talk to them. So I would say that, no, I don't think this is going to this isn't Instagram stories putting down Snapchat, right? Because that was a knockout pretty much. Yeah. I think that this is going to probably be great for steam users. I would assume I don't understand Steve people don't like that. But again, not well enough versed in either concur because dischord Subic witty and the fact that it serves many forms. I think this is definitely going to be useful, and I'm definitely gonna check it out because I, I don't play online on steam much. I do play out steam. Yeah. So I really wanna familiarize myself more with this also as an aside and never cease to be impressed by your steel. Trap memory of when you're pulling out like kind of funny games last score when you list of the show? I just always flashed Arnold going. I have detailed files like. It's a little bit of that guessing because usually it's what you think it should be. Do you just make up your else sometimes? Well, yeah, totally. When we were leaving the Comecon I was like kinda funny dot com slash con. It's kind of funny dot com slash.
