Georgia names Josh Brooks athletic director

"Josh brooks who just recently took over for greg mcgarity as a new athletic director at the university of georgia where he had previously. Been the top assistant josh. First of all congratulations and thanks so much for coming good afternoon. Any thanks for having me fall. It's great to have you and you know. This is one of those jobs that all aspiring administrators want to have the especially working having. You got your masters there after going to lsu and working under greg. I'm interested in what it was like to be his opposition and ultimately to to move in as he retired well thankfully greg's been a great mentor from me especially these last few years. He's really giving me a peek behind the rope as a services number to give me a chance to be a part of those big decisions really see you know what he goes day basis how he makes those decisions. He's letting me sit in for him and eighty meetings Whether it be on campus or in the sec. So i really am thankful to greg for the opportunities. He's giving me these last couple of years. That have prepped. Me for this day. And i think combined with that with my knowledge of institution haven't been here. Ten plus years has really served me well and made me comfortable to sit in this chair on day. One genesis has been quite a year to be an administration that there was a time many many years ago when a lot of a lot of former football coaches would move into that position. I'm not saying it was ceremonial but there was usually someone underneath. Who did the heavy lifting those days are over. These are tough jobs especially coming off of a a difficult and challenging twenty season. What does it look like just short term to try to for all of us to get out of where we been from this pandemic and to start seeing some sunshine again. Yeah hopefully you know. We're all tracking the numbers. And we're hoping that that we're at that peak point right now coming out of new year's and knowing that the vaccines are starting to be distributed but you brought them interesting point about former football coaches or former coaches moving into the role and now primarily most or came up through administration. There's not a lot of eighties have actually coached There's a lot these who played but not who've actually coached so. I think that gives me interesting. Take that. I've been on that coaching side. Being football off-spinner assistant coach for number years. It's given me another perspective. Combine that with the ministry of experience. That's really helped me as well in this role but you talk about moving out of covid. We've got remain optimistic. We've got a hope for the best and the worst. You're already planning four g. day. We've got the limited seats ready in case but obviously like i said hope for the best keep progressing but we've got to prepare and plan for every scenario moving forward josh. I realize you're you're you're barely ended the job you start questioning you on on things that We'll take some time to sort out but with every athletic director and georgia probably better equipped at the most because of the success of the program. How do you deal with the loss of revenue. We're does it affect or how does it affect the program. The most well thankfully paul. We have a phenomenal team here. From our development staff and our ticket staff we put in a really great plan in august. We knew that we'd have limited capacity and it was a fan. I concept put forward. We offered every donor the opportunity to get a full refund on their tickets and that was without any caveat so if they got a full refund they would lose their seats for next year and that that was something that we really that was going to be tough because we knew a lot of people will take that refund put back into that our development ticket office went to those donors and said hey. Listen if you let us keep a portion or or the what we refund of your ticket portion donation portion and converted to a cova relief fund. We'll give you triple points towards your priority for seat back for seating so that effort and that was very meticulous and they put in a lot of hard work and we have the best fans in the nation we were. We were able to recoup twenty two million dollars of that that big number that we always strive for so that help put a big dent in what our financial situation was along with the fact that our business office has done a phenomenal job of being focusing on essential. Expense mission critical. And everybody's bought in and we are one of the few departments in the country. I would say that have not had to lay people off now. That fuller employs. And that's important to me. Because i'm a people person. People come first so a combination of what our development office and take it off so done and the business office were sitting in you know. We obviously still have challenges to go. And we're we're going through that but we're in. We're gonna come out of this. I think in pretty good shape when it's all said and done

"The Bulldogs. Scott Howard, welcome back to Bulldog's live and we're pleased to be joined by Georgia's athletics director Greg McGarity, who is working his Final days of the month. A retirement at the end of the month, Greg, first of all, thanks for spending some time with us tonight, and we appreciate you coming in for a few minutes, But, man, you're in the final countdown here. It is this, uh, December 31st will be here for we know it's Scott. What? What led to your decision to announce your retirement and to get to this point in your career Well, I think it's some point in time. You know when it's time to step down, and frankly, I was probably gonna do a little bit earlier. Present. Now we're at the SEC basketball tournament with you. We're all sitting around and thinking that we're gonna get this tournament in some way. And the next thing you know, it's canceled. And so I certainly didn't want to retire the in the vet fiscal year last summer because I don't want to put the president through that. I mean the Hera and 80 in that environment he had enough to worry about. So we agreed to work six months more. Through the end of the calendar year. But you know, I've been able to serve in this role for 10 plus years, and I think it's time for new leadership. Uh, I think that's ah. Time will served. I think so Many times. People stay on longer than they probably should. And I wanted to go out. Count all my terms right? So, and we had recently purchased a home down in Florida. And that's where we were going to retire. And so that happened a lot quicker than we thought so also being away from Cheryl for three years of marriage. Certainly didn't lend itself to a bachelor life here, and I think so many, many trips to Pontevedra during the time from July, 1st up until This time, but no, it was time and I'm looking forward to the next chapter in our lives, and you've been in college athletics for how long? Well over 40 years. 77 coach he used hired me here in August of 1977 to be the women's tennis coach. In the assistant sports information director under Mr Claude Felton about that, so we kind of come full circle with that. So here we are 43 years later. In 25 years here in 18 years of Florida, and certainly a professional life filled with a lot of great friends lot off a lot of opportunities and just been blessed Orchid to great places and you get to go out and probably, uh, what arguably will be the most bizarre year ever in college athletics, so You can get to see that that through its fruition and not the end. I mean, I think it's going to continue over into the next year. Hopefully, not much, but my goodness, what a ride. It's been in this this calendar year. Scott so much about athletics is the person to person relationships. The team meetings. I mean, The locker rooms, Things like that Same thing with staff. I mean, you're used to having a vibrant staff meetings face to face. You know, you can tell a lot by body language and things like that. When you're not able to do that, it it sort of just Isolates things to wear. You know, we're so sick of Zoom's Okay, everybody's tired of those things, but it's the only way we can communicate with it. But I do think you have to look at all the positives. And while the virus is absolutely tragic and horrible There have been some things that have come to light that have helped us streamline expenses on certainly. Be able to manage with things that you absolutely have to have. So we've seen a reduction in our expenses through the first six months that approach 40%. A vote of of our budget well, so our staff is really been diligent and our coaches to be able to run an effective program but also tightened the belt and so While some schools wanted trim 10% out of their expenses of thing, you know we were. We're on an as needed basis where every purchase eyes really scrutinized. And this sort of has helped us our bottom line tremendously in the middle of a lot of expansion that we've got going on me right here, right right behind us At this moment, You know, there's There's great expansion going on, and you're kind of caught in the middle of that, But Can't just You can't just stop it. I mean, it's got to go forward. Absolutely. And, you know, shout out to all our donors that have made this happen. I mean, like you said, we're looking at the $80 Million project here, and we raised 65 million of that already. That's true. If so, just like the indoor building which is in our other just to hear Yes, $30 million totally paid for by our donors and is the West End zone project. Totally paid for for our donors, so it's allowed us to spend our reserve funds. Like this year to stay afloat and not have to lay off individuals or furloughs or staff reductions or laying people off things like that. We may be able to sustain that and Certainly if we didn't have their reserve, the self is itwas. There would have to be some really difficult decisions which you're seeing a lot of your peers having to make right now. But we've been fortunate not to have to do that yet. On. That's just been do the due diligence that everybody's exercised on our staff Bulldogs 80 Greg McGarity is with us here. We'll do another segment with with Greg. After this time out, we'll come back in the We'll talk a little football with Greg McGarity right after this is we continue on Bulldogs live on the Georgia Bulldogs Sports network. Long lasting protection against Cove in 19 is crucial to.

I he is not told me that, but you could infer from what Mark Bradley wrote that the head coach would be Clave her that I think it will be quite an argument, and we will we will certainly take, you know, having having to go to. Jacksonville every year plays havoc a little bit with the scheduling because every every other year. One of your SEC home games is played in Jacksonville. Which means you only have three SEC home games. And and I understand what the difficulties are. I I'm you know, I could be wrong. I could be looking at it through veteran is here and think that it's not going to happen. But I really don't think it's going to happen. Well, we're we're way this advantage in. It's a no brainer for me. It it forties. And fifties is okay to play it there. But we we should have moved. But anyway, I appreciate your your help. All news. All right, Gordon. Thank you very much. You have a great holiday. Thank you, sir. You too. All right. Let's go to Ford in Houston. Ford is Tony Barnhart here. How are you? Hey, nice to talk to you. Yes, sir..

"Know, couple of things just want to say, you know, listen to your show quite a bit. And I think you're you know, you should be be up for some humanitarian award for the personalities and people that you put up with. And I think you're a fantastic personality. Anyways, my question is, you know, I'm gator fan. And I'm wondering, do you think Dan Mullen, is is everybody's saying a great fit? But do you think this first season a fluke? Do you think we do you think Dan Mullen is the man I do I think Dan Mullen is purgatory? And I think you're seeing some signs of that right now he does not have a great team to work with. He has great players. But he I don't think the team overall is a ten eleven win team. He's going to get pretty close to that. I think he's been remarkable. He he's such a great place. Play caller. Normally as teams prepared although Vanderbilt his f- Carolina game. I think he forgot about the first half. But overall, I really I think Dan Mullen will be fantastic down there. And one other thing I got a pitch in. There is my wife is a UCF graduate. And so she wanted me to make sure that the the nights get on here to a little bit though. The nights are having quite a week. They have a prime time game Saturday night. They have college game day. They will have the biggest week in in history right now. This this week coming up. Super. Thank you for taking my call calls. Nice talking to you, John B b well great to hear from you. Brad is in Louisville Brad, go right ahead. Hi, paul. Thanks to call like to talk about athletic directors for a moment. Okay. We've got Greg maturity Georgia. You're right. I mean, the snake Georgia has unexcusable to to play the non conference schedule that they have what will say. Let me I think first of all I think Greg mcgarity is outstanding. I you can't blame him. He is. He is simply doing what everyone else is doing playing NFC s or or or a group of five team this week. And he in mcgarity case he has Georgia Tech every year last year he played Notre Dame. And I think he has Notre Dame again when his Notre Dame Georgia's at next year. So he announced today's playing Clemson. And who's the other in Texas? Fled director when that happened. Whether he'll be the pledge or not he scheduling the games. But I mean, give them credit to to go to Notre Dame last year with Georgia Tech that's better than pretty much. Anyone else is doing Florida in Florida had Michigan last year, South Carolina has Clemson. So they're not playing anyone else. So the schools that have the traditional rival at the end of the season. Don't always go out and play that game. If you wanna do some about the slates that we're playing this week it the coach is going to make the schedule better. When I mean, somebody here's the issue isn't playing liberty or UMass those game those games the third week of the season aren't going to upset anyone or or for. Homecoming. The issue is the fact that the majority of the SEC is playing the they're only two conference games. You have Arkansas Mississippi State in ole miss and Vanderbilt that's where the criticism is coming from. Why why don't you have a bigger slate of SEC game this week the conference controls that not the athlete directors? So you're saying put but the cupcakes the front end of the season. We'll just scatter them around here. Here's the biggest my my my may might most salient point assuming I can make one is that is this. With all these games on the board. We showed that slate a minute ago peop-, the critics of the SEC, and they are everywhere. And listen, I I I love this conference. This is where I live, and this is where I've always been..

"Fairly successful mark rick that was a that was an institutional decision that was that was not greg mcgarity making it in a vacuum that was the is that the way i blood way institutional decision already criticize network anymore no that one one worked out very well and it but there's no kirby smart out there for an hour to basketball there's no alum who like all we gotta go get that guy a big part of the reason that margaret got fired was so they could get kirby smart exactly if steve spurrier had not quit leading south carolina riots zone in and target kirby smart there are some people who believe and i think there's some validity to the georgian may have stuck with mark wrecked but i think the desire to get kirby smart may georgia jump and get in there there isn't it its work in the reverse now that the they won in march fox to work there's no we gotta go get this guy sense it it's more kind of you're just going out into the coaching pool at this point since we're on the subject of curry smart i hate to what you get out here with that of course i don't need to ask you the health of georgia football pretty good it's it's really good they came this close to winning the onfield national championship they won the recruiting national championship in february they just they feel really good about their program modern of two thousand eighteen will be a strong two thousand seventeen because that veteran core nick tubs zoning shell devin belony lorenzo carter isaiah when they're just there were so good as leaders noxious does players but everybody around georgia really feels optimistic about george i ran into a georgia offend the other day uh just walking around and then you've heard this fifty thousand times and it still tough i'm sure to get over but did uh did the national signing day victory help at all yeah i think it did and you know you bring up what happened on the last play the national championship in you still get pain responses from people but georgia was still playing with house money at that point.
