"Host Dory monson passed away over the weekend at the age of 61. Our own Greg Herschel befriended Dory years ago and worked alongside him. Greg chatted with Dory with northwest chatted about Dory. I should say with northwest news radio's corwin hake. Hey, Greg, when did you first get to know Dory? And what was he like as a person? And as a talent. I first met Dory in 1980. He was fresh out of college. He was an intern at king TV in the sports department. I think he was helping Tony ventrella at the time, and I was the morning news guy at KJR and I went to the sonics games at night to get audio for the next morning and young Dory and I sat next to each other on press row and, you know, we thought we were smarter than the coaches and we would analyze everything, but we just hit it off. He was smart, he was funny, he was insightful. And he was a bit of a rascal, and we just had a great time. And then I kind of lost track of him, and suddenly here in the early 90s, I guess it was, he was hired as a talk show host over at Cairo radio when I was there, and so we renewed our friendship. Well, as a talk show host, he was certainly politically outspoken, especially on conservative issues. And he became a lightning rod for controversy. Was that his MO off the air as well? I can tell you that in all the years I knew him, we never once discussed politics because it was not at the core of our relationship or I don't even think at the core of his life, the center of his life was his family, and community projects and organizations that he tried to benefit. But he had a curiosity and he would dig at a story like a journalist would. He would reach conclusions which made him a little bit different than simply a journalist he would come up with opinions, and he would kind of create some outrage, but he certainly got a rise out of the listeners, and he certainly got the attention of the big decision makers in government and local leadership. They paid attention when he was on their tail. What have we lost here in this community now that we've lost Dory? Well, I think what's lost is just a quality guy. Anybody that knew him and was his friend, a cherished that friendship. He was so considerate of other people. And those who didn't know him personally probably didn't realize that. As far as what's lost on the air, he was about as local an on air personality as you could possibly have. Born and raised on the mean streets of Ballard, he knew this town, and he loved it, and he probed every part of it on his show. That's Greg Herschel, speaking with corwin Hank, about the death of Dory monson, at the age of 61. Northwest new time, 1249. "Idea. Greg Herschel, northwest news radio. Northwest news times 6 14 and time to head on over to the dubin law group traffic center and find out if that drive is still a drive. It still is kind of bad things are starting to improve, but hey, just in from DOT, cruise near skycom for completed cleanup and highway two is back open again in both directions between mal plus 45 and mapos 50 after being shut down for over 8 hours today, so that's some good news. We also cleared the earlier accident in Seattle south on 5 that was just south of the ship canal bridge, but it still kind of sluggish getting south of north gate up to that point. And west found 5 20 is still especially busy all across Washington while I 90, just seeing some scattered delays in the alpha Mercer island, otherwise things are getting better there. Northbound four O 5, you're hanging on to some brake lights getting through the Kirkland exits, and so is south on four O 5 out of Bellevue up the Kennedy Dell hill, and yeah, things in Everett have gotten a lot busier, a lot better. Better, I should say northbound 5 getting north of highway two in a Marysville. Your next northwest traffic at 6 24. I wish I could say the same thing about the air quality around here. It's getting worse as we see the level now in downtown Seattle at a 152 That is unhealthy and it's going to be hazy the rest of the night. We'll have overnight lows in the 50s. "Game Saturday at one O 7. On the ice, little mistakes cost Dave hextall, Seattle kraken, a 5 four overtime loss in their opener against Anaheim. Ah, that's not easy to win in this league, especially when you, you know, you give momentum in the last half a third period like that to the home team. Hopefully they fixed it in time for this evening's game against the kings in Los Angeles. Sports with swords at ten and 40 after the hour, northwest news radio. Northwest news time, 6 11, a new sick leave policy is in place at a nearby tourist destination, and apparently you're the one who's gonna have to pay for it every time you dine out. Northwest news radio's Brian Calvert has a closer look. At a time restaurants are trying to encourage us all to dine out a little bit more and hardy accepted the invitation. Recently, she and her husband went out for a meal in Victoria BC, but when the check arrived she glanced at the total, then at the taxes. Then she zeroed in on something unfamiliar. We were quite upset. In the tax section of the receipt was the item labeled E H B she asked and her server said it stood for employee health benefits. I just find it quite disgusting actually. Last year, British Columbia enacted a mandatory 5 days paid sick leave for all workers to cover the cost some employers have started charging an extra fee, like this E HB fee on Anne's restaurant Bill. Ian toston is with the BC restaurant and food service association. Generally add on fees, whether it's restaurants or anywhere else. Aren't that well accepted by the public? Which is why he says most restaurants are simply raised their prices to cover the cost of employees sick days. But you can go too far on that front. When you have a healthcare system that's being paid for ubiquitously 5 day leave and it all sounds great. But there's only one consumer. And we have to be very conscious of that. When Ann hardy noticed the charge on her bill, she took it to the counter and asked. And I said, are we supposed to pay for that? And she said, yes. But that restaurant told global news, that's not entirely true, claiming if a customer wants to, they can ask to opt out of the EHP. Anne's problem with the whole thing. Most people wouldn't even notice. I think it's taking advantage of customers. They should have benefits, but the company should pay for it. Then again, it's quite the pickle in a country that provides healthcare in general yet now is asking small business to cover sick day costs. If you're traveling north, just be aware of the higher cost of dining out, along with those record setting gas prices equal to 9 bucks a gallon that I told you about a few weeks ago. Brian Calvert, northwest news radio. Well, a popular park in downtown Olympia remains closed for years after chainlink fences went up and the city still has no plans to reopen. We have the update from northwest news radio's Greg Herschel. Artesian commons on fourth avenue east is the site of a historic artesian well, and it was turned into a park in 2014, but criminal activity took over the space and the city was spending $250,000 a year to maintain it. The city parks director tells the Olympian he would support the idea of reopening that part, but it would take extensive planning to repurpose it. And he's requesting money in next year's budget to pursue the idea. Greg Herschel, northwest news radio. Northwest news times 6 14 and time to head on over to the dubin law group traffic

"Available, so do you need it? Yes, and when should you get it? So many questions, doctor Simone wiles is back with us this morning. She's an infectious disease position at south shore health in weymouth, Massachusetts. Good morning, doctor. Good morning. Thanks for having me. Well, what are the answers to these questions? So who needs it? And when should they get it? Well, really great news. New boosters are out. And those that are eligible are 12 years and up. And you can get this new booster if you have had at least two months since your last COVID vaccine or booster shots. So if it's been two months since your last COVID vaccine or booster, you can go ahead and get this new booster shot really important. I want to stress those that particularly high risk, especially the elderly, those who have a lot of underlying medical conditions that are immunocompromised, want to encourage you to be at the front of the line to get it. But those 12 and up, you can get it. Are we to the poor doctor where this is just going to become like a annual flu shot? I think we are actually moving in that direction, but I think we'll really have to wait to see what the next few months look like with the variant, as you know, it changes quite quickly. And so I think we'll just have to track it a little closer to see what's going to happen in the next few months. Are the indications that the virus that's going around right now is relatively mild? Well, we have seen, of course, a slight bump in hospitalization, but in general, we have seen a lot more milder cases where patients can be treated at home and thank goodness we have oral therapies that we can use. So we haven't seen as severe cases as we had initially. We appreciate your time as always doctor, thank you. "Cruise is a driver assistance technology that allows certain GM vehicles to steer themselves. So we geofence it so to speak to work only on the roads that we map. Jeff Miller is the assistant chief engineer, he says the tech has been around since 2017. And since then, has only operated on divided highways. We are expanding beyond divided highways to include non divided highways. He says the announcement marks a significant expansion. This will essentially bring us from our current 200,000 miles of super cruise capable roads. We're going to more than double that and will be up over 400,000 miles of super cruise capable rows. Super cruise uses a steering wheel mounted camera to make sure the driver is keeping their eyes on the road. That means no texting. So you still need to be paying attention to road and able to take control if the system hands control back to you. But it really does reduce a lot of the fatigue and the monotony of driving. "Wine country, our state's most acclaimed winery appears to be selling its wooden ville property como forest Michelle Esteban reached out to the winery's owners. Michelle told me, this is exploratory, and it's because they are shrinking a big part of their footprint. They are putting it on the market and it follows the sale last year to a private equity firm. The listing comes after the winery confirmed that it is moving its white wine production to eastern Washington. That's where they make their red wines. They say it's resulted in decades of shipping millions of gallons of white wine to the woodville facility and burning nearly 75,000 gallons of diesel over 1600 freight trips each year. Now, despite the listing, the wine group wants to ensure it's clear that it's not decided to sell the property yet, which comes as a relief to so many here in woodville who insists without the chateau. There would be no wine country in woodville. The chateau is kind of like the anchor store in the mall. They attracted all of the other stores all the other wineries to set up shop here. If the chateau never put down steaks here, there would not be a wine tourism destination here. I'm Michelle Esteban. 42 sea tank airport 43 ever at 42° coma at 43 and here at Seattle center under mostly cloudy skies 46 at 6 36 Here's a time for the traditional 9 to 5 Monday through Friday work week to end zoom which allowed millions of Americans to work remotely is among a growing number of companies taking that step with 6000 employees now choosing when and where they work Daniel abril is covering this for The Washington Post and spoke with como Taylor van sites Why is zoom joining this list of companies allowing employees to basically choose their schedule and their location Well vim is taking this approach because they really wanted to get a sense of how workers are doing what workers are doing and what they preferred So they surveyed their workforce along with customers and other peers and tried to figure out what it is that workers wanted And it turned out workers really wanted flexibility and they wanted the ability to choose for themselves So zooms did just that Self determination is great but I have supervised employees from time to time over the last decade or so And sometimes when you let them do what they want they don't always get stuff done So what are the risks here if an office is going to go fully remote or hybrid There's a couple of things that employers need to keep in mind when they're doing remote work or especially hybrid work And that's really just making sure that the office place Number one remains productive And number two is equitable Sometimes when you create these environments it can be really flexible and wonderful But it can lead to situations where some employees are getting more opportunities than others just because they're getting more FaceTime say with their managers or with other workers and it's sort of the old saying out of sight out of mind comes into play here And as far as sustainability for this goes you know building leases before long are going to start expiring right And there's going to be just a ton of empty office space and a lot more people at home Absolutely The data shows that workplace office occupancy is still not up to where it was even in November And that was you know we were still in the pandemic We just hadn't seen this new variant take hold of as quickly and as I guess it hadn't spread as far as it has So occupancy actually went down to 28% So there are a lot of companies really rethinking do they even need an office anymore And if they do is it the same amount of space do we just need maybe a meeting place or less desks because only a certain amount of employees are going to be in at one time or other So it is really a whole change for a lot of employers across the board Finally let's talk dollars and cents here because I know when Facebook offered to let employees work remotely from wherever they want They also restructured how much they were getting paid So for the example you gave with zoom if someone's working remotely in Montana are they still going to get that San Jose salary So the way you zoom explain this to me was that if somebody moved from let's say San Jose to in your case Montana they would not be adjusted Now it's really unclear if you're tired in Montana If they would hire you at the market rate of Montana or if you would get that San Jose salary that part is a little unclear but they are not adjusting your salary when you move Really interesting ideas for businesses to consider as we think about ending the 9 to 5 Monday through Friday work week you can read more about it online at Washington Post dot com from Danielle abriel In this Taylor vanzi with the interview federal agencies are beginning the process of implementing a $15 an hour minimum wage that ever began today ahead of the rule coming into full effect on January 30th The office of personal management personnel management says 70,000 workers will be affected by the bump and pay and they come from agencies including the departments of defense and agriculture It's 6 40 let's talk "The editor's desk, then with Greg Herschel Time Man Defector, They say all eyes will once again be on the U. S. Senate today Day two of Donald Trump's impeachment trial, all eyes except perhaps those of the current president of the United States. A B C's Karen Travers, of course, covers the White House. She's on our CO Moh news, Langton. Morning, Karen. Hey, Good morning. What impeachment is essentially the message. We've been hearing from the White House for the past couple of days. You know they're not tuning in around the press office. Yes. Today, several times during the opening statements and the TV they're all tuned in. But they're also always tuned into cable news and paying attention to what's happening, But you know they were going about their game plan their agenda, and that was the economy yesterday, and instead of, I think, trying to weigh in on every twist and turn, the White House says that just doesn't do anything to further their agenda doesn't change anything on Capitol Hill, so for now, it's just better to not get involved in it. I think they'll make statements at the end once the final vote is cast. But for now, all questions to the president about this have been pretty, I think politely rebuff. He's just not going to comment, he said yesterday. We do know the former president was watching any reaction. We're told that the former president down in Florida is not happy with how that first day when she wasn't pleased with the performance of his defense team. Specifically the first lawyer, Bruce Castor, people around the president say that they tried to keep his focus somewhere else scheduling meetings so that he wasn't spending the day in front of the television. But He was watching it. No surprise. Hey, we're told he was expecting that the defense is gonna be much less successful than the first impeachment trial. The case is obviously very, very different. But we're told that former President Trump was really surprised here some of the arguments, especially when his lawyer complimented the Democrats opening presentation. He didn't like that very much. Where do we stand this morning with the President Biden's effort to get Congress to pass that big covert relief proposal moving forward. I'm going to say this a lot. Negotiations are on. Going. The house right now has several committees that are doing the work to turn the proposal into legislation. Then it will be doing that as well. And it's going to take a couple of weeks. That's just to get it down on paper. Then everybody starts arguing about what's in it. But for now, you know we talked about this. I think last week they can do this without Republican vote. They set it up so that they can passes in the Senate with just a simple majority. Long as you keep everybody together on this. They don't need to go with the bipartisan approach. Now. That doesn't mean Republicans will eventually both for it. They could But it certainly makes it a bit easier to continue pushing for the priorities that Republicans have said they cannot get aboard with. Thanks for the update, Scare and baby sees Karen Travers with US from Washington, D. C. As for the impeachment hearing today, we're learning that House impeachment managers plan to use capital security footage that has never been publicly released before, as they build their case against the former president. We're told that they will use the footage to argue that Trump incited the insurrection, and prosecutors will lay out their opening arguments this morning after yesterday's first day of a very emotional testimony. Survey claims about 56% of Americans support efforts in Congress to bar Trump from holding elected office. The poll also found 54% of Americans believe Trump should be charged criminally with inciting a riot. Planned rehearsal event for Joe Biden's inauguration is being postponed politico reports The rehearsal was expected to be held Sunday and allow happen on Monday. That delay comes amid heightened security concerns following last week's right at the Capitol. President elect Joe Biden is laying out a $1.9 trillion plan to boost the economy amid the Corona virus pandemic are rescuing recovery plan. Is a path forward with most seriousness. Purpose and a clear plan. With transparency and accountability, maybe sees Karen Travers joins us from the White House. One of the highlights Karen Yes, And there's some big numbers in this package that Joe Biden ourselves last night, the American West. You plan they're calling it. It's a $1.9 trillion rescue package. That is the top priority for his team when he takes office in less than a week. The big numbers here that it includes $1400 in direct payments to most Americans, so that's similar to the $600 checks that most people just not so that we get to that 2000 number that we heard a lot about what the president even wanted. In the last days of just Number is still also would include. The package would include $130 billion for school, reopening 160 billion to build a national vaccine program and Bruce testing, and it also has about $350 billion in funding for state and local governments, which has been a big priority for Democrats inviting team lays this out, and now it's up to Congress to shape it into legislation. They will, of course, control the house and the Senate in a couple of days so they could squeak this through with just their own party. The biting people are making it clear they want us to be bipartisan. They want this to be, you know something that everybody can agree on least in the big concepts here as their first big thing out of the gate, But that could be tough. That's a big, big price tag for Republicans to swallow $1.9 trillion I understand that well as we move ahead with the new administration, I understand that ABC News has learned what President Trump was doing during Wednesday's impeachment proceedings. He was watching it on television. No surprise. We just weren't seeing him reacting real time because he doesn't have twitter anymore. So we couldn't get the stocks as it was unfolding. But what he was really angry as Republicans were condemning his actions and his words last Wednesday before and during that siege of the capital, he was growing more angry as Republicans were saying that he has some responsibility for us that includes the top Republican in the House, Kevin McCarthy, who ultimately voted not to impeach but at some really strong words against the president. We are also told that right now, the big question is who will defend the president in a Senate impeachment trial? He is really isolated. Most of the lawyers that did the first round are not going to defend him. This time. People are heading out the door. They're literally aren't many people at the White House anymore, And that happens in the final days of any administration, but especially striking right now. Person we expected to do the impeachment defense. Rudy Giuliani. We're told the president is not taking his calls right now because he's not happy with him. Karen, Thanks for the updates. closing of of businesses businesses and and schools schools Gottlieb Gottlieb did did offer offer reassurance reassurance saying saying quote quote we'll we'll get get through through this this another another former former democratic democratic presidential presidential candidate candidate is is endorsing endorsing Joe Joe Biden Biden in a video on Twitter California senator Kamilla Harris threw her support behind the former vice president saying quote I believe in joke we need a leader who really does care about the people and who can therefore unify the people and I believe Joe can do that and with us right now was ABC news political analyst Steve Roberts Steve what a difference a week makes it did you anticipate Joe Biden picking up this mode the momentum this quickly no I have not I don't think anybody did I I think what we're what we're seeing though is a fascinating phenomena based on one word and that word is fear it's fear of Donald Trump and fear of Bernie Sanders Joe Biden has not been reborn as some useful charismatics move talking energetic candidates Joe Biden today is still the same Joe Biden that people have a lot of doubts about two weeks ago two months ago two years ago the difference is that Democrats have so desperate so frantic to find somebody who can beat Donald Trump that they decided that day either as a group and individually as voters and as candidates they'll camel Harris being an example of of having to rally around somebody and then choosing between Biden and Sanders the fear of Bernie Sanders is pulling the party too far to the left so there's a lot of energy around the Biden candidacy right now but in my view it's largely negative energy it's driven by fear it's driven by desperation there are not a lot of Democrats even this morning jumping up and down in Saint Joe Biden's gonna be a great candidate a great president but this negative energy is very powerful and that's what's driving this trend do you think it's now his to lose or is it too early to say that definitely has to lose end up and I think it's gonna be very difficult for Bernie Sanders to rebound here the one variable of course the one no wild card is by himself as I say he has not been report he's still the guy who can show astounding lapses of judgment he's still the guy who could make gaffes he's still the guy who can show his age very clearly he's still the guy who can appear fumbling and uncertain and in debates with Bernie Sanders and interviews it's still entirely possible for him to make damaging mistakes I think a lot of Democrats even if they rally around by they're holding their breath and hoping that Biden will get its act together and I've seen some signs a few signs of Byton improving on the stop I think he's shown a little bit more energy I think the campaign line about I'm the candidate of those who have been left behind it counted out is a defective and powerful line really echoes of a bill to written of nineteen ninety two the comeback kid although Biden's hardly a kid he's more the comeback teaser than the comeback kid and also this line of of of appealing to the concepts of dignity and civility and normalcy I think they provide a fairly stark contrast to the president who's in the oval office now but Biden is still Biden it was all of his flaws but at this point he's the Democrats best hope and it's gonna be very difficult for Sanders to capture Steve thanks for your thoughts again this morning ABC news political analyst Steve Roberts it's also worth noting that this morning one of the former
