"Will you be betting the Notre Dame Navy game? Yeah, I probably will. I think the last time I saw it was 20 right around 20. Yes. There's no day. I saw 20 and a half Notre Dame. I knew I saw I was started because I started looking earlier in the week. So it's a scary game because you don't know anything about either team, right? You know, the Notre Dame has a new offensive coordinator, new quarterback and everything. So it's gonna be in the Navy. You know, those Navy dudes going to be very disciplined hard work the games in Ireland. So you have no idea about fan base or whatsoever. But so I'm gonna look closer to that game, but to be the team by three touchdowns in the regular season opener. That's a lot. Yeah, that's a lot and you got the over under 49 and a half if you want to dabble in that. Yeah, I might listen. I'm actually leaning at the under. I'm not going to lie because I'd have zero idea. I want to talk gambling a little bit later on, but let me just wrap up this whole thing about your future. One last question. How serious was the live business? I mean, there were all these reports. You would go there. There's a thing with Dan Patrick. It didn't work out in the end. I never thought you would leave Ernie and Shaq and Kenny. I don't know, but the money was the money. How serious was that? How far did it get? Well, I had to take it serious. You know, I talked to so Mike Wilbon, Brian Gumbel, Greg Gumbel, Omar Rashad. These guys have all been mentors to me throughout my career. And Brian Gumbel asked to say it the smartest thing out of all the guys because every guy told me to take the meeting. It's like, dude, you got to take the meeting. You got to take the meeting. You never know what might happen. But Brian Gumbel said the most interesting thing. He said, Chuck, you need to take the meeting. You need to take little seriously. I said, why do you say that? He says, because in three years, they're going to be together. And he said, if you turn down a lot of money, you're going to look like a fool. He said, they're going to merge in three years. He called me like six months later. He said, I just want to apologize for being wrong. It only took a year.

"Candidate to have a really killer biopic made on or biopic. I have to say both every time. But Tiger is so interesting, you know, he broke into this really button up sport and he had the challenges that he had, and he still kind of made a mess of it sometimes. And he still found a way to get back up. And honestly, I do think he's really good for I was watching his practice round, and people are just lining the dam. He's really good for golf, even if they just kind of wheel him out there. And the casuals like me I'm now a moth to light and then I might be around Sunday. Like, I don't know if I'd have been around Sunday watching that. I'm not a big golf guy, if Tiger didn't let me know that the masters were on. Right. You know what I mean? I love that. I just get a kick out of when he does poorly. There's nobody says anything. It's the fucking Internet. People are just, they're waiting to argue over something and they'll argue over Tiger BM plus ten or something and try to rationalize why it's not that bad. He doesn't have to be the same guy he once was. He's still good for this sport. And I think, you know, it's okay to acknowledge that maybe some of these obstacles he's at least had a part in creating. There was a good Tiger dock. He wasn't, I don't think he was but HBO arming contained. They did one like three years ago that was really, really good if you never saw it. You should check it out. I would love to. I would love to because I just think we got a little taste of it. What was it? What was the last Doc that was last year that came out? Matt's here with, what was it? No, the Tiger Woods dog. We did a pot on it last year. That might have been the one I'm talking about. Yeah, that was really good, but tea claimed there was a lot of unauthorized stuff in there. Right. And the girl that somehow knew everything about him was only in one picture. The picture looked like a fan picture. Yeah, yeah, yeah. There was all the letters between him and his high school girlfriend. Right. You guys just had one. I don't think I don't think people have a shot to be normal in that situation. So I guess like I'm a little bit compassionate, you know, but yeah, I mean, he wasn't great this weekend, was he? No. But you would never know that. You would never know. You would never know. "I and eagle, getting ready to call the NBA playoffs. Turner and Chris long filling in for Salvatore and train of thoughts this week. So two very, very funny guests, two great spots. So I hope you enjoy them before we get to it. I wanted to just remind you, if you missed last week, a non work was on the pod. Two weeks ago, Greg gumbel, three weeks ago, Troy Aikman, if you missed any of those, go into the archives, check them out, subscribe to the pod and if you can leave a review on Apple, it helps tremendously and rate it as well. All right, let's get right into it. I and eagle followed by train of thoughts this week with Chris long filling in for sale right here on the SI media podcast. All right, joining me now, one of my favorites coming off a phenomenal NCAA. Tournament, now the NBA playoffs begin. Also has to deal with the Brooklyn Nets as they, when they play in game, one of the best played by play people out there, I and eagle, Ian, how are you? Hey, Jimmy, great to be with you. I'm like, I'm like you're Terry garr, I feel like. There you go. You can lean on me. You know I'm gonna be there. You know, you summon me, I appear. It's very simple. I went through this recently with Kyle brand from good morning football who comes on a lot. And he said that I said he was my Regis. Yeah, you're going a little more old school Terry gar. I'm going deeper. To me, it's like I like to have people on who I enjoy talking to. So if you're my Regis, my Terry garr. I think you're more Martin Short. Martin shorts. The whole time. Great. You're much more short. I'm gonna take more intro. Let's take Terry gar off the board. I am Martin Short. I can live with that. Thank God for YouTube, where you can just pop up Martin Short on Letterman, Martin Short on Johnny, Martin Short anyway. It's always gold. Rabbit holes, a lot of rabbit holes. You get stuck in them. I get stuck in them. That's why TikTok can often dominate my nights where I think, oh, I'm good. I'll just chill and then I go down like some 40 minute 40 minute session of TikTok that I never should have entered in the first place. Yeah, it's bad. I don't even want to get into what's going on in my TikTok world. It's just not good. You watch one video of a pimple being popped and then they send you 50 videos of pimples. And it's not good. There are a lot of pimples in the world. Jimmy, just get used to it. Exactly. Now you're not going to have a lot of free time because we have the NBA playoffs coming up. So you'll give us a little rundown here. You'll do them for Turner, but you also have the nets right on yes with the nets. So Tuesday night, nets when the play in game, they're going to play the Celtics, which should be a great series. How does that affect Ian eagle exactly? Yeah, well, so net Celtics is going to be a very popular series. So they're going to get that national TV exclusive treatment as well. So yeah, I'll be doing first round second round for Turner. I'll try to mix in some net games. If it works out schedule wise, all in all, it's going to be fun and I think the way the playoffs are lining up in the NBA this year really good matchups and a little bit of that mystery, the idea that a 7 seed could win the whole thing is very realistic and it just shows you how things are in the NBA right now. Miami had a fantastic regular season yet nobody is really talking about them as a legitimate Eastern Conference contender. That's odd, but you feel the buzz around the league and that's been the early narrative. Now it does feel like to me. Now this could be the New York bias in mail, although I'm not a nets fan, but with LeBron out, it does seem like Kyrie and Durant will take centers. I think they're going to be the show every night. I think Phoenix is there too. I mean, they're so fun to watch. But I think the nets are really going to be center stage, I think, because of the way Kyrie can just light it up out of nowhere, and obviously Duran everyone knows is the best player. So I think there's going to be tons of interest in Brooklyn in the playoffs. Yeah, I think there's just a lot on national curiosity. And I don't judge everything off of the hot take shows and the debate shows, but the nets do dominate conversation because of Durant and the fact that he is someone that can absolutely make you stop what you're doing to watch what he's doing. And then the Kyrie interest, which from a basketball standpoint, he's gifted. And he does stuff that nobody else does. And then on the non basketball side, you have the natural curiosity of him as an individual, and he seems to generate news all the time. So with that said, there's no doubt they're right smack in the middle of the national interest. Look, the Phoenix Suns deserve to Garner attention. They're a really good team and they're exciting and they can win the title. John Moran has been tremendous this season and I do think he moves the needle a bit now where people want to see what he's about and how he handles himself on the next big stage. You've got Jayson Tatum, jaylen Brown, two excellent players, maybe Boston goes on a run. Maybe it all comes together for them. And there are just plenty of other storylines. It's not limited to just those. I think the NBA is chock full of them. So the nets had two major things this season with James Harden getting traded and Kyrie with the vaccination status. Was this a bizarre, would you classify this as a bizarre net season as someone who did all the games locally or did that stuff not factor in really you just do the games and that's it or? No, it was bizarre. It was a bizarre season and it was sectioned off in many ways because of the high expectations early on, how would they play without Kyrie. Keep in mind, Kyrie wasn't part of it for a good portion of the season. He wasn't playing in home games as we know because of his vaccination status. He wasn't playing in road games because the nets made an early decision that they didn't want the constant distraction. Then injury started to hit Hardin wasn't quite himself and Kyrie was welcomed in. They decided that he would be a part of the road games. He would practice with the team because that didn't fall under the mandate in New York City. Look, Jimmy, you know, 'cause you live in the area. It was hard to follow. It didn't have a lot of rationale behind it. I'm all for what's fair is fair. And the idea that road players that were unvaccinated were playing at Barclays center and a home player that wasn't couldn't. And it made no sense. So to me, if you have a rule, fine. You follow that rule and that's the end of it. It just seemed like there were too many loopholes involved. Eventually, Irving does come back, Hardin gets completely disinterested and disillusioned with his situation, and they realize that it's irreparable. Durant's injured at that point. So he's not really around and the stuff that was there just kept growing and it never got solved and eventually we know what happened. They made the deal with Philadelphia. That's a whole other storyline. How that embiid hardened combination works in the playoffs and can harden really get himself to a championship level. That's the one thing missing on his resume. So yeah, to categorize it as bizarre is fair, with all that said, they ended up where they should end up as the 7th seed. The reason why you're a one, two, three, four, and east or the west and the NBA playoffs is because you showed a consistency of winning..

"I mean, a lot everywhere, which was great, and I loved seeing that for the that's where me and my ego and the pod come in. I was happy to see that. But it really is funny this whole weird podcast world, which I've been doing for so long, and I still don't know how it works because you have a guest on who you don't have any expectations for. It turns out to be one of the better ones you've done. And then gets picked up everywhere. So I thank Greg gumbel for that because he's not on social media. Again, like I said, and I hope everyone out there enjoyed the interview. There was great. And you said that before. I forget which guess, but I've heard that before from you like, oh, you didn't expect much to come of it. And then all of a sudden it blew up. So I guess you just never know. And even I noticed that that was, I think they were talking about on the fan too. Referencing somewhere. Even I noticed that that blew up that Greg gumbel interview. That's great. And you know what's funny about it is gumbo is one of these guys, so the whole reason I ended up booking Greg gumbel is because I'm watching the tournament one day, sitting on my fat ass on the couch, not doing anything. And I'm like, this guy's been doing this for a long time. Let me do a little Googling here. Wikipedia. And I see that he was 75 years old. And my mind was blown. I'm like, he said, first of all, he looks like he's 50. And he's 75, and then he said he's been doing the studio for the tournament for 24 years, which I would have said he was doing it for like ten. Like I was like 24. I'm like, I gotta get this guy on. What am I doing? And you know, I thought it might be a little bit of a challenge to get him on because he's not on social media, so I'm sure he has no idea who I am. But it worked out. So I was very happy about that. Very happy. Yeah, it's a great spot. And definitely a change of pace from having Tim dance or Joe buck on every week. Well, once all of the once all of the NFL madness, that's all for us now. Now we can sort of branch out the guest list a little bit, which is, you know, the tournament was a perfect week to have him on. Yeah, so that'll be good. I'll be complaining about I have no guests coming up now and we just have baseball going on. Well, the NBA playoffs now get all the MBA people on. And we'll do that..

"And contemplating how you can get out of apple picking and thinking about running in front of a moving bus. And you see that the Giants are up 24 zero. Are you going to then go home and watch the game on DVR? Yeah. I wouldn't want to. You have to stay off your phone and you can't do that for more than 30 seconds. Yeah. I'm thinking about getting a flip phone. A whole nother topic. I want to detach from the smartphone, but I don't think it would be. I'm not going to ridiculous conversation. You're not getting rid of your iPhone. This is pure nonsense. I'm not even going to get it. You work on radio and TV. You're not going to have an iPhone. I know. Well, the point is even if I want to, I don't think that I could, right? How could anybody survive in business today without him? I would love to see you too with a flip phone. The first time you got to send a text message and you got to hit the button four times to get the E you'll throw it. Remember all those famous scenes in the famous Sopranos episode pine barrens when Pauly and Christopher stuck in the Woods and they keep trying to call Tony and their phones keep cutting out and Tony's always throwing the flip phone. That'd be you once you have to send the text. So let's not even engage in this ridiculous conversation. Doing the overnights on the fan this week, did you get a lot of Will Smith Chris Rock calls? I was on my first show of the week is like Monday morning 2 a.m. so it's really Sunday Night. So I led now, personally, I wanted to do it for a while and I led with it and kind of mixed it in with the NCAA final four. I did not get a lot of calls. I got some, but I did not get as many as I thought. And yesterday, so Monday night, I was talking to somebody in the hallways at CBS portrait, you know, show that you've done before filling in on the network there. And he's like, oh, the slap heard around the world, wall to wall. So local, it doesn't play as much. But nationally, CBS sports radio, he said that's all they were doing. That makes sense. That makes sense. Will Smith needs help. The speech was worse than the slap. I don't understand how people don't like go watch that speech. That's not a well individual, but whatever..

"Of ahead of the curve with having fans back and doing it, but I'm here in New York where it's been like now I'd say a month, three weeks where we feel like COVID's over. Like you don't want to say it because of a jinx, but the mandates were lifted and have you noticed anything different anything different than the last few weeks it shows or live events or anything like that with the pandemic fully in the rearview mirror and stuff like that with a live crowds. I mean, I think there's just a little bit of hope, you know, everybody like, especially in the like we were in Toronto this past weekend did some shows there for the first time since we've been back at touring live. And so we had to cancel some in December because the omicron had popped up and everybody was getting sick again and it was like, you know, just to be there and have that it was a very cathartic feeling for these people for the first time in Ontario getting the opportunity to come and do this again. So I just think that's kind of the general vibe that I've been sensing. It's just when you get out there for the first time and really just get to let everything go, whether it's a concert or WWE, you get this catharsis like, yes, this is life. This is life. We get to live it again. And so there's just a hope and a feeling that not only is there a light at the end of the tunnel, but we're like, we're opening up the door. Again, like you said, let's knock on wood and hope that that's the case. But it's been very nice. You really could not have said it. You really hit the perfect word for it, cathartic. I went to my first concert a couple of weeks ago. And that is the word I would use. It was weird at first, but that you hit the perfect word for it. It was cathartic..

"For sure. And we'll get into the storyline, but I got to ask you, I know you're a big sports fan. I know you're a big Chicago Bears fan. I would assume you're a huge cubs fan as well, or is that a wrong assumption? No, man. Light socks. We took this. Cardinals, baby. Okay. We've talked about this before, and I have a terrible memory. So I mean, it's obviously atrocious that your bears and Cardinals explain it again now. It's clashes. I mean, you just do with your family does, man. That's my grandpa, that's what he did. We watched players games on Sundays in the fall in the winter, and then the cardinals games were on the spring. I never questioned it when I was a tyke and once it's ingrained in your system, you can't betray your grandfather. Well, it goes two ways either you join forces or you go against them to bus balls and beyond. Yeah, I had my moments in football in my teenage years where the bears were awful. And I was like, why aren't we rooting for the forty-niners? I'll root for them. They're the sexy team. The era, you know, Steve Young Jerry Rice, all those guys. And so I had my fling with the niners, but then I came back around. I circled back around to Chicago. This was a big NFL fan. When you do these, you know, the big shows like mania SummerSlam, et cetera. And they're in these, for instance, this WrestleMania on Saturday and Sunday WrestleMania 38 on WWE Network is in Jerry world in Dallas. Obviously, a landmark stadium in the NFL. So if he is an NFL fan, do you get pumped up when you're in these kind of venues? Oh yeah, that's awesome. I mean, first of all, we live for the stadium shows. I mean, this year I think more than any we're doing a ton of them, which is incredible. For just the stature of WWE as it is. But I missed the Jerry world WrestleMania 32. My knee was still in flux at that time. And so this will be my first opportunity to really get to do that. And so I'm really excited. To get out there, to experience what just the screen, what it all looks like, all that good stuff. So yeah, anytime we get into a huge stadium, it's a blast for me. So let's talk about you specifically in mania. The interest of full disclosure for my listeners. We're taping this late Monday afternoon. Podcasts will come out Wednesday. So Seth still has Monday Night Raw. He had a meeting with Vince McMahon Monday morning..

"For you. Oh, so here's a question. Now, we're going to get into Russell maniac. We have a lot to get into WrestleMania 38 Saturday and Sunday, WWE Network, peacock, and we got to get into Seth's opponent. We don't know what's going on. But I'm just curious about that because a lot of people in their work lives. I sort of subscribe to this role and I hope my bosses are not listening, but do it and then deal with the ramifications afterwards. Now you, obviously, now with the hair, was that a thought to maybe do it and deal with it afterwards or there's no doing that Vince always finds out what's going on. No, so it's one of those things where another thing I subscribe to, yes, you know, apologize later as much asking for forgiveness as much easier than asking for permission. But also another one to ascribe to is you have to pick your hills to die on, right? Of course. And some things are not worth that confrontation. And the last thing you want is on the biggest night of your career, essentially, you know, for your boss to not give two shits about your performance and is only focused on one aspect of your costume. Right. And so I'm very collaborative with Vince when it comes to stuff like that. And I didn't want to surprise him in that regard. And it wasn't a crucial part to the presentation. It would have been cute, but it wasn't worth it, you know what I mean? Yeah, definitely. You got to pick your battles. All right, so we've got WrestleMania 38 Saturday and Sunday. It's now a two night extravaganza. Let me start with that. Before they went to the two nights, I guess maybe last year the year before it was the first time they did it with two nights. That was a really, that was getting to be a really, really long ass show. What was that like for the superstars? Well, the longer it got the worse it was..

"How does health have grew up in Chicago, cold as hell? And so I'm here where I enjoy the climate and temperature. But I've always been a hockey fan. I can sit down and watch a hockey game between the two worst teams in the league. On television and get tremendous enjoyment out of it. And I still believe this. Hockey is the only sport. Where you can physically see the uptick in intensity in the postseason. I really believe that that you can look at a game like, oh yeah, that's a Stanley Cup. Right, right. And so would I be able to handle play by play in a hockey game? I don't know. I have a great respect for those who do because the names are a little bit tougher as you go along. You eventually learn it anyway. But I just love the game pocket. Well, Greg, I appreciate this. I had it blast and we have the final four coming up this weekend on CBS Saturday. Yes this year. Oh, TBS TBS that's right. They switch every year. So it's Villanova against Kansas, 6 O 9 eastern, and then North Carolina duke. That's got to get you pumped up, right? Nobody do I just had it all. If he doesn't wear blue, everybody will drop dead of a heart attack. They should be good games and it's funny. We just went through the whole Saint Peter's thing and the problem as it always is. Everybody loves an upset. And but later on, there's a price to pay for that. And that team gets to a higher rated and more talented team and a lot of times the spanking happens as it did this time. But it's still a funny thing to do. We'll all be watching you on Saturday and studio with Charles and Kenny and Clark Kellogg and yeah, there'll be a couple of eyeballs on duke North Carolina. So don't mess up any names then. I'll try not to. Thanks, Greg. Appreciate it. Thank you. Sir, we got your test results back. And give it to me straight, Doc. I do get a lot of questions about why I haven't there been more, and I want to ask, you know? It's not my call. But I do appreciate more than anything else to me. I've always appreciated the opportunities that CBS has given me to represent them. And I don't take that lightly, and I know a lot of people don't get that chance. So when I have gotten the chance, I have always felt that it's pretty big bear that standard bearer thing to do. And it's something that I've always treasured and I will always look. Now you were the lead NFL play by play man for CBS for several years back then. When you see now what's going on with the salaries of all of these people, do you say to yourself? If I, you know, if I was in a different era right now because this has gotten, it's gotten crazy the last, you know. I will tell you crazy. I don't have a feel, any need to be jealous of it. I have been treated really nicely and have always, I've always been appreciative of what I have been able to do for a long, long time. So I think that until that doesn't apply to me. I think that what does tickle my thought process is I've never felt in my entire life that there is an announcer who can bring someone to the TV set to watch a game that that viewer wasn't already going to watch. And I believe that the only thing that a broadcaster can do is chase people away. I know this for a fact because I won't name them, but there are three or four announcers. I go, oh, I'm really interested in watching. Oh, nope, click going. Because I would love to.

"Like underrated humor. Oh bob Bob stress playing fun to be around. And you know. I was blessed to I've worked with awesome people by Dick edinburgh verne. Lundquist the lindsey nelson race shot and you know and and then greg gumbel and and on and on and on but i have had the opportunity to work with two guys who you know that. Their intellect is off the charts and one's al michaels and the other is is bob Brilliant people if they weren't broadcasting They'd be ceo's they be college professors they would be they would they would have to take that brainpower out for a test drive. I've really truly really smart people. Dan you mention you mentioned al michaels and martin technically actually work together. There's that caveat there so clear there's there's the distinction also there's a there's not there's plenty of people in our business who are not that bright. And then there are people at cost michaels who are not only genius at what they do but just have genius quality and al michaels. I believe is turned. Seventy seven or seventy eight. He sounds the same. It's unbowed seventy seven. I know exactly how old allies Because i caught him trying to lie about his age one time but that was a long time ago. But at no and and there's something else about being smart. It's not just knowing the information. It's not just knowing all the facts. It's knowing when to use them and allen i. I started on monday night with al. He said dan were don't get. I know you're smart. I know you know. But don't try to jam the square peg into the round hole that you'll know when it's right you'll know when it's when it fits Three quarters of what you're prepared to say before kickoff. You'll never get to say because the opportunity won't present itself and if the opportunity is it there don't do it. It was great advice and so being smart as a lot more than just about retaining information. It's knowing when to use it. What was like being part of that. Monday night team for so long and it feels like now every year. They're trying to reinvent the wheel or come up with the right combination but it just will never be what it was it was just. It was an event and for you to be a part of that for more than a decade. I don't know if pressure would come to mind or prestige. How did you feel about it in the moment. Well i i when it first happened i it was kind of a blur. I could hardly believe that Because had only been in broadcasting for three years and All of a sudden. I'm i'm doing monday night football. I cut my teeth. That cam lacks the. I'd been behind a microphone. Plenty but yes. It happened for me. It happened very very quickly I like to say i. I was fortunate. I did monday night football when it was monday. Night football It was the. nfl is marquee event. We got the best games. We had the biggest audiences Never did a game on a sunday afternoon. Get a rating comparable to what we did on on monday night. So and then. Of course i had the opportunity to work with tv history with al but also Standing next to frank gifford. Who was the link. Back to day. One of monday night football and i never ever stood in that booth next to frank. It didn't realize That i was the luckiest guy on her dan. Would you say that the chemistry with you three d did it Did that click right away. You know it did. Click right away. And that's because Frank you know the the problem in a three man booth. is at Two guys are sharing job Alice job as the play by play man was You know his remained the same but when you have to analysts you you're sharing job and you have to The only way it ever works if neither one of you Ah is selfish and neither one of you is so interested in advancing your own. 'cause that you're just gonna You're you're you're just gonna step on the other guy and thankfully frank was very gracious to me when we started working together and it was just a natural. It was a natural fit. We never stepped on each other. We never crowded each other out it. for me. It was effortless. I love the fact that you were tight and friendly with jack buck in you and joe are great friends. And i'm trying to recall. Would you jack ever done any games together. On radio or otherwise. I'm guessing nineteen i look. Nineteen eighty-three was my last year of playing for the cardinals in nineteen eighty-four. I did. I had an offer to go to work it. Nbc tv. but instead i did the university missouri With bill wilkerson. And sometimes john rooney. I did the cardinals with jack. Buck jack buck. And i were. Actually he had just left the The the pre-game show that he did At.

"People argue. What are the chances someone yells breakfast ball. Oh god i'd love it. Do we get one of those. I wanna breakfast ball in one mulligan per nine. That's my house rules. Nothing like a good breakfast and a couple of toe wedges along the way are balls behind a tree. I'm going to say look at that. And we'll everybody's looking. I'm gonna give it a little toe with. Are the people listening to this right now. Going to have guests today provided by you guys or that is not likely today. We're doing a show tomorrow. When or where will we have possible guests. So i can walk out to the driving range right now from watching the putting green right now i can ask them guys to come on. The could probably hear me from where they are. But here's what the cool thing is. They are allowing. The and greg and chris should just be us on the courts meaning Wittingham is brought some some equipment. Out here some microphones wireless mice where i could just go on the course. Because we're playing right in front of calcium mahomes and so i could just walk back to those guys you start talking to them interviewing them or patching them through to you so like the possibilities are endless here but i am going to destroy to the driving range right now and see if i can see if i can get us some guests right now because i think I think some people are warming up again. You want to ask whether or not these are people that would want to have on. Do they look in the sunlight to montana. Don't worry about it okay. Well it seems like a legitimate thing to worry about that. You might think you're bringing me larry fitzgerald and instead i'm interviewing i'll find ribeiro evident. Open invitation here mike sent. He does where he sold us out. There's gonna be a lot of content on social media channels and on the youtube page guitar and friends. make sure to subscribe. And also i've been told by a lot of people. Why should i subscribe to this well. If you've been paying attention to our streaming schedule it's been inconsistent kind of by design the incentive to subscribing is we go live fifteen minutes before we actually go live. You get a notification so you'll be the very first to know if that show. That day is live on youtube so pleased subscribe and as a bonus. You're gonna get a lot of content. I can already see dan like well. What do we get out of this now. The patients with us because a tournament is has not started yet. They're going to get a lot of great video in the can. And we're going to repurpose all of this footage across our platforms on podcast and that youtube page. Are there a lot of media members there guys. Because i'm looking at where you are and you look to see you seem like you have some exclusive access there. It's not like everyone in the media. is there. this isn't like radio row. You guys have infiltrated a celebrity circle here that not a lot of media. Members are incorrect Yeah that's that's accurate Joe buck is here but of course. He's invited the play. Golf here The golf channel's here covering the event of but in terms of media members. I think the only other media members that are here besides us playing the tournament or Are joe bach. Jay bilas playing in the tournament. And that's about it. I mean working. Yeah it's it's only it's only nbc base people so Michael smith michael hollier here. They do a peacock show. Show is here. yeah brother from another. It's called and Yeah it's basically just nbc. People golf channel people. And that's it. Are you smiling a mean because it's delightful to hear specifically fancy lad. Say brother from another that way. "Way out during the commercial is a. You know, we got a kick out of that trend. I got a picture. Gumbel here on Sports Talk Chicago. Right. What excites you about Justin Fields and the bears Right now, I think for for the Bears on and for for a lot of people, it's not just Justin Fields. It's uh, when any team that picks up a youngster coming out of college, the Jets with Zach Wilson and Triple Lawrence in Jacksonville, you're excited to see if the potential that you have witnessed on film and in game action transfers. To the National Football League that you know the talent is there, but that's never a guarantee that that someone's going to make it and they're in. You know, John as well as I do. The reverse is always tricked out. Brady was 1/6 Round draft choice. Come on. You know, that is in retrospect crazy, but it's a fact so and you always know. Remember Ryan Leaf Ryan Leaf was the number two draft pick overall. He had a strong strong arm, but as far as accuracy or mob. What was that was his name LaMarcus Other. The Raiders picked JaMarcus Russell JaMarcus Russell could stand in front of a barn 25 yards away and still not hit the bar. I went into town. I met in town one day and I was looking at the statistics prior to a game with him, and his completion percentage is below 55% of the order you nuts. How are you gonna Are you gonna win football games, completing less than 55%. Even even guys who were losing football games are averaging 60 65% completion. So, so it's so it's so there's never a guarantee. But what I think that fans need to be excited about is that he has the potential, and he has the promise to do wonderful things on the football field, and I think it's going to be a thrill for fans and there's gonna be some losses and mistakes along the way. And, you know shame on us if that takes you by surprise, and you get describable by that, because it happens with everyone. The people are going to watch, and I think they're going to be pleased by his abilities and hopefully for the Chicago area. They'll see an improvement in their team and then and then promise for the future. What's your number? One concern about the Bears right now. Oh, I don't know. I I like their coach. Um, I'd like I'd like their team any time. I've had a chance to do them in the last couple of years. Um, you know, I think the number one Concern is to continue to build on past. You know, Here's the Here's the thing, too, You know they had They had some rough ups and ups and downs with Mitchell. True whiskey and and its stall the progress of the team, because when you make Draft pick, and they went out of their way to get Mitchell true Whiskey When you get a draft pick that high you wanted to work like The world. Is dependent on it and and and it doesn't always happen that way. And yet you don't want to bail on a guy too soon, but you don't want to over hype it anyway. And I think they went as far as they could. Um And that means continuing to build on the things that you've accomplished in the last couple of seasons. And from the Bears point of view. It's probably isn't there A lot of the fans say, Well, it's just it hasn't been that great, but I think that the progress that they've made there is significant and and and the the Problem they have now is how to work Justin Fields into the mix without taking a step backwards and he has to learn the Bears have to learn with him. But also they're gonna have Andy Dalton leading the way for a little while and trying to trying to continue to build on a record and teach this youngster at the same time. You like that signing? Well, you know, you had to do something because at that point they didn't know what they were going to do in the draft. They knew what they needed. They didn't know whether that they were going to get what they needed. And a guy like Andy Dalton in it, And I don't mean to denigrate it. Any dog is a fine quarterback. He has been a fine quarterback in the league. For for a long, long time. You just happened at the misfortune to play with the dreadful Cincinnati Bengals. And then the fact that that he was out there and available. I don't think that the Bears could afford to wait to see what was gonna happen with the draft. I think Andy Dalton would have gone to someone else. By the time the draft came around, and so I think they made the decision that they had to make, and I don't think it's a bad decision at all. Greg Gumbel here on Sports Talk Chicago. Greg, What's wrong with baseball right now? Oh, you mean other than double header games going on Lee seven innings or or or extra inning, starting with a man on second basement. It's absolutely ridiculous. It's just stupid. Absolutely stupid. It's not the same game that I grew up knowing and loving the very fact that But that they have these these But Thomas is the dumbest thing is the warnings to both benches whenever there are pictures that are too close to the hitter. Another done. Another thing is what will the player that the catcher is really not allowed to block home plate? Why would that be unfair? You know, there's no more. There's no more trying to take out a short stop at second base to avoid it, You know, T eliminated double play..

Great to have you want to bargain? I'm glad to be back, John. I'm good. Thank you. How are you? I'm doing Great. Thanks for being here. What was your reaction to the Justin Fields pick for the Bears. I can't say that I was surprised. I'm I think that probably bears fans are grateful that they that their team was aggressive enough to go out and realize what they needed to do on bats. No reflection on Andy Dalton, but Andy Dalton has been around for a few years. He certainly is not your guy for the future because you need to plan for that. On dim fact. Andy Dalton will be a good guy for Justin Fields talk to study under first season, but but I thought that it was. I thought it was a good move by the Bears. I think that a lot of people You know, they kind of thought it would happen. They just didn't know quite how does one go about getting it done or if they would get it done the kudos and they did what they had to do. They give up too much and moving up. You never know that. You never know that until it happens, You know you and I probably talked about this before. Um people, these people who go on the air and make predictions, it's also stupid because you know, it really is. Well, this gene is gonna win. This division of this team was gonna flop and you never will. These these guys are really strong. You never know how the loss of certain players is going to affect the team off during the off season. You never know how the new players coming in in how those acquisitions are going to fit in with what you already have. You may make these draft picks and you can, you can reel off a bunch of draft picks who have flocked over the years. And so there's no guarantee that they're going to live up to the hype. I have always said during the NFL season that you can't really get a read on a team and how it is in the new season until you're at least Six weeks in six or seven games into the season. Because the only then can you tell whether this kid coming out of college boy, he was really and it's already or he was just a great College football player, and that's where it ends. You know? So it's Z. There are so many ifs, ands and buts, but for anyone to come out and say, Well, these are the two teams are gonna meet in the Super Bowl. Please give me give me one team getting one guy that said Tan today was gonna be in the Super Bowl, let alone win the whole thing. I think that I think that the most The most optimistic belief for Tampa Bay last year was that with the additions Tom Brady and and and a good defense already in place that they would make the playoffs, But I don't think anybody would have predicted that they would go as far as the good Surprising Was that for you to see them go back. Well, you know, I'm not sure. I'm not sure that my opinion counts for anything because two seasons ago, brief areas with my broadcast partner, right? Yeah. He was in the booth with me. So I had nothing but good wishes for Bruce on Bond, and I have always thought he's a hell of a coach. S o. I didn't know I didn't know if I really felt that way. If I'm just feeling that way, because I like Bruce, but the fact of the matter is that I do think they exceeded. Everyone's expectations except probably Bruces, but but I think he's shown a couple of different areas now that he's a really good coach, and that's good for him. And and and I don't think I don't think I need to add to the to the applause for Tom Brady. I e think he gets enough of that. Have you communicated with Bruce after they wanted? Oh, my God. I talked to him. I talked to him a quarter after midnight that night. Really? What did he say? What was that conversation like? I said, you really need to raise a glass to yourself, and he goes working on it. Because because we did that every now and then when we work together, we'd arrive on Friday and we do some player interviews and we'd have dinner together our whole crew and and he's just a delightful person and He would look at various teams and, you know, you let me know that there were teams that were contacting him during the season that we work together. Because you're never really sure that someone is done when they say they are because sometimes that old nagging feeling will come back and grab you and won't let you get away And you know, it's kind of like an itch that still needs to be scratched. With Richard. He and I have been in touched. Never since he he left. I called him a deserter. You know, e had told him. I told him. Yeah, go ahead, just just because they pay you more money than we could afford to kill you, But I'm so happy for him and and you know, he's He's a good guy. Players Tell me he's great to play for. But he's a no nonsense guy, too. And sometimes you don't find both of those qualities in the same coach. What was he like as a broadcaster with you? You know, I think he could have been okay if he had given it or is he? Yes, he's given it more of a shop in one season. The tough thing about someone coming in who has never done it before. Is that they've never done it before. Him and it Z one of those things that I'm very happy to say. I've seen people come into the business and they find out that it isn't as easy as we often make it sound that sometimes they find all this is that is this is not a snap. And this is this is not something that just do off the top of my head and a little homework and And be a little bit knowledgeable in the things that I'm talking about. No, I think with bruises case and then I had cheese Trent Green because I said, Here's the thing that the Trent liked trend I told trade you have somebody in the booth now who speaks your language? On and it's true they would start talking about things well, when you're playing quarters on the defense that this will not be over other animals. What do you people talking about what they understood each other perfectly. They were great together. And so so I think that that Bruce got a little bit into the habit of talking to trend. When he should be talking to the audience, and sometimes he would get a little bit too technical and and and he wouldn't explain things the way they had to be. You know, John Madden's great gift. Was me a complicated game. Simple. He would break things down so that the audience in the average fan would understand what was going on on the field and Bruce, I think eventually would have gotten there. But you don't get that done in one or two months or the first season and sometimes not even the first or second season. Is is delivery was a little bit muted. And and as I said he didn't realize he needed to be talking to the audience and not necessarily to trip screen in the booth. But I thought that he would have he He was a little rough around the edges. That time we had our very first game we were in Cleveland, and it was Cleveland against Pittsburgh. And Bruce referred to a lot of guys by their first names because he's been on a first name basis with for years and years and years and the the Steelers, there was an incomplete test and we were talking about it and Bruce is, Bruce said, Well, he had Antonio wide ass open at the five yard line..
