"Tim Sullivan from Bloomberg radio. Last month, Bloomberg reported that global funding for startups fell 23% in the second quarter from the first. The total number dwindled to $108.5 billion. So where are the people with deep pockets and an appetite for risk supposed to find opportunity? Our next guest has some ideas. She certainly does Aiden madigan Curtis as a partner at eclipse ventures. It's a venture capital firm focusing on essential industries diving big into the digital age. Aiden was part of the team at Apple that scaled up the first ever Apple watch. She joined me in Bloomberg news senior markets reporter Katie greifeld, we started though with an update on the overall VC environment. For what it's worth, you know, well, we did see funding kind of NBC drop as a whole 23% quarter over quarter last quarter. It was also the 6th largest quarter of VC funding and to start ever. Wow. And I think we're talking about a $105 billion into great new companies and I think that even in some of the toughest times, we see some really exceptional companies getting built, for example, LinkedIn was started to know too as was it laughing and pro core or Airbnb and O 8 and Napoleon O 8. I think sometimes the very best companies actually get built when times are toughest. And Asian, I'm looking over the notes that you sent us and you write that physical industries are ripe for VC investment. What exactly is a physical industry? Sure thing. Yeah, it's actually really capacity. If you look at the talking about kind of industry stats, the 625 billion in BC investment that went out last year, you know, well over 80% of that is invested in areas like in FinTech or enterprise SaaS or ecommerce or BioTech. When we're talking about physical industries, we are talking about the basic foundations of our society, industries like manufacturing, transportation, the delivery of actual healthcare, or even supply chains. Things that make up over 40% of global GDP. And in terms of how we think about it and why they're so ripe for investment, I think in many ways COVID brought to the light just how rigid so many of our supply chains are. And the geopolitical climate of the last year or so has also really shown a light on how globalization while transformative in so many ways and really deflationary in a good way for the last 30 years worth of consumer power has also made us very interconnected and has made us very interdependent. So we're really focused on digital transformation of some of those industries that underlie our basic infrastructure. So what does that mean for something like either supply chains or manufacturing specifically? I mean, I love what you're talking and it really resonates with me because I do feel like there are certain parts of our world that have been slow to innovate and be disrupted. But I agree with you crisis often leads. We saw it during the pandemic to disruption and innovation and thinking about things in a different way. So how does this all lead and guide your investments? Talk companies for us, if you would. A 100%. So if you think about where the vast majority of the world's manufacturing base is, it's no longer in the U.S.. Manufacturing used to be 30% of U.S. GDP. It's now 12% of U.S. GDP. And that's a change of shift that's happened in the last 25 years or so. Some of our portfolio companies are really focused on not just the concept of reassuring, but the notion of how do we actually bring real innovation to grow productivity in industries like manufacturing. For example, vulkan forms. It's a 3D metal additive technology using a very advanced laser structure that can actually make incredibly complex designs, for example, metal medical implants, very small tiny pieces to go into consumer electronics. And it can do it at a hundred times the pace and the speed and throughput as traditional metal manufacturing. So that's a good example of the team out of MIT that we invested in several years ago. Greg Greg Howe is a partner at eclipsing is the word member there. We've been watching their growth with great anticipation. There is a New York Times article on them just a month or two ago talking about the crazy advances that they're making this space. Another good example of the company called bright machines. It's actually a technology that we collaborated on with flextronics and took and turned into its own stand-alone company, where essentially with just very simple software instructions, we can take a very modular approach to using robotics in software, creating full end to end manufacturing lines that can do really quick changeovers, then we can actually produce using that type of technology really fast and easy and outputs and assemblies with great flexibility. So that's a good example across manufacturing. We're also really heavily invested in modernizing things like transportation and bringing all sorts of climate focus to some of those innovations. For example, a company called arc, boats, it's a fully electric speedboat. We've also got an investment in a company called Axl hire, which is a really rapid last mile logistics company. So you can sort of see across the chain, whether it's sort of end to end full stack approaches like arc, which is an actual boat, an electric boat, or with the aquifer, which is the software stack as well as the philanthropy, how we're trying to innovate across these different industries. Well, let's situate this in the macroeconomic environment that we're currently in, which is one with a lot of fears about recession and when you're thinking about these innovative businesses that you're looking to, how concerned are you that a recession should it descend on the economy would sort of stop some of that innovation in its tracks? Yeah. I actually think innovation is really one of our only key ways out of a pretty dark looking economic time. If you think about the power of what it sounds funny, but hydrocarbons did, you know, from the 1950s to the 1970s, they actually allowed us to relatively cheaply really fuel crazy economic growth and create the economic development. Globalization in the last 30 years have allowed us to reduce labor costs and actually produce much more for far less. These are the these are the key elements that create growth. It's essentially being able to through productivity and lower cost inputs produce more output. That's Aden madigan Curtis. She's a partner at eclipse adventures. Bloomberg's kitty grave filled with us there as well. Up next on Bloomberg businessweek, we are still talking startups at very specific type of startup while many new market players want to get in on psychedelics. I think one of the things that we forget when we talk about magic mushrooms, MD and a, all of the psychedelics, they're really having a moment right now, is that there is still so much we don't know. "We don't talk about influence in your marketplace. Who's an influence. let's talk about. I love talking to the wineries. I love talking to chiropractors. And we know so many. And we wanna do a shout out to hurley chiropractic and conway arkansas. And how well. They're doing out there and their stories. Just absolutely amazing and how. They're impacting lives and change lives within their community. So i want you guys to go and look at their website too so it's really interesting. Have a new one getting ready to launch. Believe it's either friday of this week on an early next week so but keep in mind when we're talking about an influence there also a also author and going to the author program. You have to have something a you have. These people like are really top notch in different industries. It's like if you were say martial arts martial artist in your style of martial arts you of you have probably a certain amount there but of its krav maga. You have a certain person that you know is an influence in that. In that thing it could be a grandmaster or have some other different title. Whatever that looks like if it's in the wine business it just it's just different. Different winemakers are still well known other wineries in vineyards want part of whatever they do and they want their hand. They want that winemakers hands on their their wine. Okay so keep that in mind when you do that because you can become an influence her and you don't need millions you don't need hundreds of thousands of dollars become an influencer. So greg are here. Talk to you and i'm going to say this right now when i say greg greg. I've known each other for so many so many years k. use the word doctrine moody. Greg moody a doctor dr mundi. Okay so when we use their doctorate okay. So when we talk about that you know he he's can talk a little bit more on this author thing but i tell you it's such. It's such a big deal. Something as simple as having white paper written professionally. Okay and put it up on the internet all over whether that's amazon apple you know which we've done so many times so many people you become an influence of the power the power the power becomes this. Somebody lands on your website and they see you're an author they see you have a book on there to get this three. Download it chapter. Okay if you go to amazon books maybe thirty dollars. But while i get it for free right here. It's whenever you determined to do it so you don't have to become an author to become a bestseller and make money. That's not happening anywhere but very very seldom happening all the number one authors on amazon or even most parents on that many books. Okay and there's so many ways around that they're doing it to be an influencer so great like you can take over from here and russia. I think we do see touch really. We need to understand the power of having that not just become an influence on getting a book or even having that book cover in that downloadable file. Wow apple. it's on amazon. They're all over the internet everywhere. I look i see greg dr greg. Moody's books everywhere. That's what we need. That's when you about well and and that's a couple things about that..

I think they're polishing up. And i think the wwe is going to be sold my own personal speculation. But there's a lot of innuendo rumors out there within the next twelve. Twenty four months. Maybe and i really believe whoever's going to buy it is gonna put a theme park in orlando as one as universal studios and they'll have a wwe museum hall of fame in maybe even attractions like the undertake ride for example a pile piledriver tatting shutting that. What that's really interesting. greg greg. Fire me if we keep on talking about resting. So let's let's talk to me. hilas talk about. I could talk resting. Speak to a radio station or a brand and actually create something rather than saying. Just give me thirty seconds. Spot will throw it on a hundred times over the next couple of weeks. Sorta thing tell me about radio You know you're you're starting radio. And i know you you beg to get into it but Was there something about radio that appeal to you at that time. Why am i mean when. "That kind of sounds not that great is like not that. It's like middle of the road like it's ordinary but it's that you're balancing a lot of extraordinary things with the other side of the coin too so like say for myself as like during the day am majority to time using my mind and using my communication skills and emotional skills that's what i'm utilizing nine five out say but then after work i am using more my body like you know the sports like playing golf playing volleyball pickle ball love pickle ball naples pickle ball scene i mean this is the world capital. It's you go there. There's sixty four courts and they're taking burn season. You have to wait in line. I mean that's insane. Are you bringing the median age down by like twenty years just in there throws the ahead. Younger people are the pros and pickle ball. I mean that is a whole community. I mean there's guys that like switch like you like alabama pro in tennis and the you know it's kind of tough for field to get into. I'm switching a pickle ball. Boom now i can be a pro for country club pickle ball and the i have a buddy of mine is playing in columbia pickle ball shit. Yeah i mean it's it's a really exploding sport especially here in naples. I love it. I love at ten out of ten. What is the trash talking and pickle ball like well. You don't want to get right. That's right dennis. I just fucking spiked the ball fields. Here you're going to do a hey again. it gets intense. It gets people get heated. I bet i mean my grandma plays pickle ball. And she's those there's a lot of. There's a lot of political debates that arise over the line. You know like somebody goes out of bounds or something is is. She competitive competitive. I don't think so. "A role where there was a certain amount of breath that people people had time. They were like you know we're gonna we're gonna use this time push for something better and so yeah better day was my answer to that. It was It was sort of a solve in terms of healing for myself and an offering. That's other people but also again. There's there's if you listen to the lyrics. There's there's some hard near your expert there there Lyrics talk about needing to pick up stones to protect the ones we love like. It's not just all like oh let's let's combat like it was. It was people's attention to the fact that we've been pushed to the point where we actually have to fight. We have to fight just to live. And that's not right. Nobody wants to do that but but that's a reality and and we all want peace but But we we need to live right. We need to. We need to stay alive. So yeah that was. That was better day speaking to speaking from out answers it us. No that's fantastic Take a take a swerve here. Talk about one of these community initiatives that year that you're running you're you're you're raising funds. Are you planning. Some sort of a village turned to thomas about this. What's what's happening. What are you what are you doing. I've always been involved in community projects. They mentioned university onward. I'm actually before that but This particular project is called. The sand maroon village appearance organizations called moya africa And that organization is becoming a led by myself dow. We've been doing cultural education programming for folks of african sent for over ten years in toronto Then at about five years ago for the from shifted our energies or actually by that point. The tapered oculus it was. We went on hiatus. And when i started things up again. We we shifted to a focus. doing programming out of the city. Because of need for c. Seeing and feeling a need for people african descent to have access to healing through connection to nature and And not just connects danger but Cultural programming is happening in that context. You know so. It's and again the integration of those things because our traditions institutions from this part of the world's our traditions are also indigestion from somewhere else and they connect us to land two elements of nature and so Ran out of space called. I think reform which is outside of berry And then we did that. For several years and kind of built up a little bit of A little bit of momentum and then this year we got our own space which is two hours northwest of toronto in the collingwood calling would and and you're you're using that space to create an intentional community. The first as far as we know the first african centered intentional community. North of the us. Canada border wall. And we're working. You know one of our our hardware mandate also connect with indigenous local news in his people as well I really just to provide a space for for african descended people to To come and farm food brother on food to connect to each other as community to connect to land and then we provide cultural programming as well And there are opportunities for folks to sort of either live there or Sort of have it as a retreat. Like a timeshare so very early stages now but we're kind of growing our membership and building partnerships with different toronto based organization. And it's really exciting. Yeah and i. I'm a. I'm a part time organic gardener. Not you know. That's not my expertise but again it's like kind of i think it's an important skill and that's one of the things that i really wanted for my son example to learn to grow his own food and stuff i think. That's that's great. i. I noticed that along with fundraising i thought was interesting was memberships that were available so different levels of memberships that allows different access in terms of number would be a number of nights that you can stay there. I think the the middle one hundred and eighty days or nights at the facility. Yes we're kind of using like almost like a gym membership kind of your where you know folks. It's community supported so they're paying And then sharing access to the to the space you know we do wanna have like i ruled towards getting funding so that some memberships can be fully subsidized. So that because the point is really. We don't want there to be barriers taxes for any our community members and so even even now even without funding we'll get were open to barter and we're we're really really there to sort of Even folks don't have cars where we help organize Carpooling that kind of thing So yeah that's that's that's kind of the model we're using and so far. It seems to be working well. And i think i think will we'll build on it as we go but But i think it's it's it's forms a good framework for for a way to sort of be community supported but also you know allow folks that the level of involvement that system individually initiative a my. There's a segment that we have on the on. The show called lost venues. So our question to you. Is you know throughout the years where you've been gigging and playing live shows. Obviously maybe not recently but is there a venue whether it's a Locally or internationally that you've played at the have great memories of that just happens to not exist anymore. Yes there is The first one that came to mind. I think there's probably more than what but I one that. I mean, we're working with a relatively large volume builder. And I just I just had no idea how to go to an all electric house on def You think about You know most people that are building the homes. They go with the volume homebuilders because you know it's more cost effective. Um, I would suspect that most of the volume homebuilders are leading leading consumers down the gas part because they just don't know any better. Thank you very much for your expense. Because I've been told over the weekend. This would be easier if you're building a house from scratch, but not by the sounds of it for Jack in Robin. Greg is in winds are morning, Greg Greg. "So when you first got there, I think you brought up Greg Oden was like a I forget his title. What is title he was at the time Greg was manager student. Yes, he was a graduate manager graduate manager graduate manager see a Gregory you also I think had scoonie Penn in a row. Yeah. Yeah are those two playing like against the managers in game? Like is this the greatest team ever put together on a staff? What was it like the first of all high-level dudes, as you know, scoonie Penn is a high-level guy man. He's with he's with Memphis wage. Always with Grizzlies now and and as you guys know Greg's great unbelievable love a lovable 7-footer like big lovable, like everybody loves Greg Greg play with the managers every day after practice and before every before every game so you saw all of these, you know, God so loved, you know short managers we had some size but you know, he saw all these managers who and then saw seven foot Greg Oden out there like just running dudes over and occasionally he would, you know try to shoot threes, but when they need him to score like he would just you know, he would do what what we know Greg Oden does and you know, we we were able to practice with Greg a few times. And because he was a graduate managers allowed to do it. So we put him on the Scout teams matter of fact when we played before we play Purdue we put him on the scout team a couple of times because of Hoss. Yeah, and we said we need someone to simulate horses physicality. So we said hey who better than Greg Oden, let's let's put them on the scout team. Let's have him simulate all of you know, practice runs so many actions to get their bigs touches. So we got the guy Greg Oden is going to imitate Isaac house and and he's going to simulate that even though you know, he's a few years a few years to remove from playing we are probably I don't know two or three minutes into our defending Purdue actions, and I had to call it off. I thought I should get Greg out. He's going to hurt our entire team like I mean balls were flying guys were falling off. He was supposed to them throwing him into the Basketball stand. I said get him out. Like I need I need guys to play against Isaac. Also, he gave us a great look but I was afraid he was going to hurt our team. I will say it was awesome doing your guys games because after shoot around the managers would play they would play pick up and and they they grab Craig and they'd grabbed scrutiny and it's like now registered with them cuz they you know those guys on a personal level that you've got. The number one pick in the NBA draft and the Big Ten Player of the Year from whatever year that was Cooney playing against them. I'm not sure did like but those jobs they were busiest. Well, if you know scoonie they know because studio will tell them any let him know he left us. There's nothing his big not as much but Studio let him know if you don't mind telling them right I loved I loved her Greg grew up cuz you know again, I covered Greg it's funny. So here's a story going back home. Ever ever ever introduce myself to a when I was a recruiting writer back when Rob was young now, he's really old. I never ever introduced myself to a head coach until fad. That was the first coach. I ever introduced myself to it was at the tournament in Arkansas and he was recruiting Odin calmly at that point and I remember going up to him and I spoke bunch of time around obviously that team they were so good..

"Are you willing to give up a kind of a mid around that, he say, second or third pick next year to give Matthew Stafford So again? If you ask Chris balance of the available options at quarterback for next season, I think he'd tell you, Matthew Stafford, the guy we're targeting, but I also think There is a limit to the price in which the culture willing to pay for the draft capital standpoint to go get him so I would not be putting your Stafford nine cultures just yet. I hope we get to that point in the near future. Well, right. The last time we talked about the colt was when Anthony Castonzo was still not retired. Jared Veld here was still on the team before he tried to go to Green Bay and win a Super Bowl their asses. You said you might have to give up 21. As you said, you might want to draft a left tackle there. For you. Would you be comfortable enough doing that going on? Lean on quarterback and kind of worrying about the rest later. I'm sorry. Say that again, brother. So why would you be comfortable getting rid of number 21 trading number 21 worrying about the rest left tackle later on. I think you have to. You know what I mean? I mean, foreign friends. Important left tackle lose. You could say it's the second most important position in the teeth. Going stop by one thing, the quarterback and so Had always operated on the assumption that Philip Rivers was going to come back next year. Are which meant you could take care of the left tackle of 20. I have not been the girth and his, says a Clinton Nelson. You confront the left tack. He's really good at Let's go. Let's leave him in left position. Also three times in three years in the league. Let's not mess it all crows once let them be where they are. Aziz. My father has been you draft a left tackle it 21 period end of sentence. You have to get a quarterback first you have to report about was protecting that left tackle, so that requires you to trade away the 21st pick and trying to find a veteran left tackle at the bridge. Okay. We could find the left tackle in the second round. Soviet? Um, yes. Again this morning trust like Apple. You gotta have the quarterback first. And if that's what it takes to get Matthew Stafford, so be it. Couple minutes. Your rake sticking in the A F C South. I guess everybody's happy. They're not in a position like the Houston Texans right now, Ivan. Do you know deal with what they're dealing with? Do you have a prediction where Watson is going to end up? I think it's actions will try to straighten this down as long as they can. Keep Shawn Watson in Houston just because it is so hard to find a guy like that, and let's face it. Protections have not had a town of light shone once in a quarterback. In the 20 year history of the franchise. Nothing close, either they get to a point where they have to trade him. It would be for whoever would offer the most draft picks and especially someone that would be in the NFC. They had their druthers. You would send into a team you would see once every four years. So you know the obvious options have been a F C teams. Have been. Miami has been the Jets because of having pick three Houston's own pick. How is that? Why? By the way to trade somebody their own pick back? How about that? Or to have the second pick of the Jets? I think if you think Houston is more willing to trade him to an NFC team, we only see him once every four years. That's going to be interesting. I think, you know, obviously the cold snow. They're not going to be able to get him. But at least you don't have to play him twice a year. Greg Greg Strong really appreciate the time. "Rates on savings and deposit products. So what can we expect as consumers? Here's Greg McBride, chief financial analyst at bankrate dot com. Greg What's the current characterization? Status quo is the way I would describe the outlook for 2021. You know That's good news because we've seen record lows on many interest rates throughout the past nine months. Really, since the pandemic took home, Alright, so mortgage rates for one Mortgage rates closed out 2020 at yet another record low, expect we'll see the movie than lower here in the first part of 2021 just you know, due to nervousness and sentiment about the economic recovery. We may well see those rates rebound in the second half of the year. If we get that economic recovery to really take hold and grab a higher gear, however, the increase in mortgage rates is likely to be pretty limited. Because the Federal Reserve has another tour with their disposal. They can buy more long term bonds in order to keep mortgage rates. Well, that got a real incentive to do that, because of the stimulus of economic activity coming from housing and some people refinancing the mortgage is all right. So what about something like a home equity line of credit or car loan? Some of these other Personal ones We take out Yeah, That means there's a rape spent are already low. I expect they're going to get Mork competitive, particularly in the second half of the year with the home equity If you see mortgage rates tripped up a little bit and refinancing activity drops off a lot of lenders going to shift the focus to their home equity products and so more competitive landscape. Certainly gonna help would be borrowers there. Harlem's again a very competitive landscape going to play in the favor of those that are in the market for car. Also, you've got added competition from dealers and manufacturers that wanna move inventory, so I think it's going to be very promising you from the financing standpoint. Speaking with Greg McBride, chief financial analyst at bankrate dot com, or talk about interest rates for 2021. How about for something like student loans? Yes. You know a lot of student loan debt out there. Obviously, you know, and the fact that rates are essentially on the whole not just for this year, but likely next couple of years bodes well, you don't have to worry about those rates marching higher on you. Good time to really have the wind at your back and make headway on paying down that student loan that particularly, you know, right now, through the end of January, the suspension of interest on federal student loans every every dollar you throw against it. Goes against knocking down that that loan principal on down on the private student loans a lot of those air variable rate, But you don't have to worry about rates moving up on in 2021. So again another area where if you're focused on debt repayment, you've you've got the wind at your back was low rates and and no catalyst. It's gonna push the Meyer any good news, Greg for savers. Probably not much in the way of good news for savers this year, you know, rates fell to record lows of the end of last year. There's probably not going to be a whole lot to bump them up, particularly with the Federal Reserve. Judging to stay on the sidelines. Thank the one glimmer of hope you could see later in the year is if we do see a robust economic recovery and loan demand such the pickup that could give CD of the bit of a bump, but It's not so much later in the year and even then on Lee contingent upon strong economic recovery and improvement in monument. What what could trip things up economically speaking in 2021? Well, I think right now the hub of the wheel. Economically speaking is just the vaccinations, right? I mean, that's that's our pathway to someone turn the normal see if there is any sort of stumble in that process. You know, there was a new strain that vaccinations are as effective against that kind of thing. Yeah, you know that back to disrupt the trajectory of the economic recovery s. I think a lot of things really kind of hinging on. That's getting to about the middle of the year and having vaccinations that have reached a mass scale and that at that point of the give a lot of pent up economic demand, particularly in areas like travel. Entertainment hospitality. Greg Greg McBride, chief financial analyst at bankrate dot com, It is 20 minutes now in front of the hour on this morning..

Yes, it was It was a market was a marketing gimmick between 06 and 09. Yeah, I know, right? It had to be inspected every five years. Me class action suits is because the people are claiming that they were not notified that it had to be inspected every five years. And according to some of them, it's not in the book lift, and if it isn't a booklet, it's in a place where it's impossible for the average buyer to understand, saying it's unconscionable. However, however, they did. He did get his inspected. Right. He's an individual case that he's gonna have to deal with because he has proof that it was done. It sounds like he's outside of the class action suit because he has proved that it was done at the 10 year inspection, so he's gonna be in a different girl he could opt in or out. What? Well, yeah, But Doc is saying that the people in this class action or ones that they did not have it done. Yeah. What I'm saying is, it doesn't matter. They're telling him he didn't have it done right so he could opt in. He could do both. And you know what happens if he hopped in you end up with what a $400 coupon. So how do you I wonder how you sue these guys? You just won the class national? No, No, you're that doesn't preclude you from suing. If you have a difference set of circumstances he's claiming he's claiming he got the 10 Year inspection. He's not covered by the class action. He wants to sue them. You know what? I forgot this question. Does he actually have something wrong? Right now? They're refusing to fix Actually, let's see. Is he on there? I don't think he's on there right now. No, I don't know if he does or not. That would be a hard lawsuit because they're not doing anything yet. Yeah, but he could. He could sue to have it reinstated. Or the value of money. He'd have to get there, Tony into them individually. He's there, or he could even do 7500 small claims court. But what's the value of that warranty? And they haven't denied it yet? That is, that is a monkey wrench. Okay, So what do we do about it? I think, Doctor, if you call, why don't Doc why don't you do this? Why don't you get the proof that he had it done within the 60 day? Time for Chrysler did does. Did Colorado Springs give him proof? Do you have that? I wonder if he's listening. Do we have his number or not? Yeah, I could call him. Tom. Haul him back. Let's see. Let's see home to send us the proof. Sean, Welcome to the show. What's going on? Yeah, this is actually this is Greg Greg, the owner of the older of Ah, Greg ordeals. New Mexico cuisine. Greg Gregorio. Record EOS New Mexico Cuisine. Okay, Gregorio is New Mexico Mexican cuisine. Talking to cars with Python

"A couple of angles. I WANNA take here all around talking to cars with John Bursts. Let's start with science fiction. Yeah that's kind of not science fiction tours. It feels like science fiction so to me when I was in school is in college. I took just a couple of programming classes for requirements not a CS degree but to me. It felt like artificial intelligence. It was people working in Lisp and they were trying to pass the turing test. Like if you have a chat literally text chat with my program and you are tricked into thinking. It's a real human well. Then it must be real and that you know never really worked very well. One Jew was not very impressive right and then you know it felt like I was never really going anywhere and then all the sudden you know. We rented a Tesla not too long for a few days and it was just driving around on. Its own in traffic like that is really far from tax chat. Yeah right it's so that's why I say science fiction because I feel like that part of science fiction kind of arrived. Yeah. We're seeing a lot of incredible advances and I think that machine learning and artificial intelligence is accelerating that absolutely and you think python is defacto way to go about that for sure. Yeah my mind. Yeah for Yeah. Handling data for machine learning. I mean the libraries are out. There it's just super powerful tool for that now. You did a little bit of work around this kind of stuff. Can you give us a sense of just like what kind of libraries might be involved? Or what kind of even just kind of code we write. What kind of sensors are there like? What's that world? Look like as a fertile car specifically for Python dares layer on top of Ross called. Ross Pie which is an incredible platform for talking to sensors and collecting data. So sensor data get the view of the world around you or actually aiding controls on on a robot that python is the robot operating system. Yeah and Ross. Pie is the python. Api for talking to Ross. Yes so part of the the way this might work. Is You just treat the car like a robot? Yeah I think that we can as cars like you said. Get more and more like computers and as want computers to drive them. They're just robots. Yeah yeah well you know jumping just a little bit ahead to the Steph will come back to this Self driving more. Maybe but we were talking earlier about just. Can we quantify how much this is true or not true about whether cards are like computers and if you go by lines of code it's definitely in the realm of computers absolutely lots and lots of lines occur random modern car? What would you say yeah too? Many to count too many for one person to manage to. I did a quick search earlier and I you know according to Google. I'm not sure exactly what it's based on this on. But it says that the modern car with their infotainment and their cloud stuff and all that sort of thing says uses basically a hundred million lines of code. That's boggling. Yeah Yeah so. That apparently comes from wired. Give you a sense. That's five percent as much code as all of Google as a company like all of their services Wild we also looked. And if you look at windows. Ten windows is not typically accused of being like a thin bloat free operating system. I mean neither is Mac. Os either really. But it's definitely not considered like a lightweight like many operating system. Yeah yeah the real deal well windows. Ten has fifty million lines of code to the modern car. We're not talking. Self-driving Tesla or Kia or something right. Yeah absolutely lines of code. That's a serious bid of programming. Yeah it's it's the incredible effort of decades. Yeah so it's pretty interesting just to think of how much computation is going on. Also I think I heard somewhere that the there's not a central computer but there's a bunch of little microcomputers and they need to interact with each other right. Yeah absolutely little computers all over the car that are talking to them to each other in their own sort of protocol or the can protocol which prime minister that. I wonder if car technology had been adopted later. You know how much would this? Just look like micro services with discovery. Yeah Yeah Greg Greg question right because it's not Jason Buzzing around the wires it no no. It's just bites. Yeah which is fine for performance and stuff but I have no idea what the connectivity like the network cabling between these little microcomputers are but there's a ton of computation going on in these cars. Yeah absolutely every I mean from from the big stuff like pushing the brake pedal to the little stuff like turning on an overhead light. Everything is in a modern car is letting it so the cars aware of it in many places when you do things like that. Right I mean traditionally older cars. Maybe there's some little micro controllers in like an eight set eight track cassette player Ed or something but when you push on the break that pushed directly on a lever which pushed on some hydraulics which then pushed on a break. Whatever they're called see. I don't know what it makes it. Stop right increase friction. He goes in the car stops but now not so much. I mean it's like all the stuff that you do turn it on. Winter wipers like my car is fly by wire right. I pushed on the break episode of the gas. And it interprets what that should mean for it to go absolutely does so. There's there's a lot of data's zooming around right. Oh Yeah Yeah yes you gave a talk on this at Portland Pediatrics Python. Me Nope right. Yeah Yeah Yeah. That's cool in all definitely linked to the video that was recorded there and linked to that video there. But you had this graph of like all the data going along just a Kia some kind of Kia neuro- or something celebrating right. Yup Yup just the the data that you have to the noise you have to filter through and just what the bites look like as as you're looking at activity growing yeah right. Yeah Super Cool. Let's talk about that for a while. Let's talk about cars surprising. Not Surprising under I. It's a little surprising to me. I guess but cars generally have the same architecture. Burr like their communication protocols in their hardware and stuff right. My understanding is the cars at least have to have an interface for this obt to port. Whether that's an international or a federal standard. I can't remember but a wave for things like emissions tests to plug in and pull the vehicle for data very specific data. So there's that and most cars are still using this camp protocol on this canvas. I think that that's pretty much the standard over his things right right right and I suspect that's largely due to the suppliers. Oem'S IF YOU'RE GONNA make car you don't make the brakes from scratch necessarily may buy them from Bosscher. You buy them somewhere else and those things off to be interoperable and the do there's also a history of things already having safety qualifications so the work that's involved in having a new technology brought into a car is incredible and so if something already exists that has the safety rating for it. It can be very cost effective to just

crucial time in the fight against the virus on CBS's face the nation Dr Scott Gottlieb said the next two weeks are key and he adds that the next two months will probably be difficult with the closing closing of of businesses businesses and and schools schools Gottlieb Gottlieb did did offer offer reassurance reassurance saying saying quote quote we'll we'll get get through through this this another another former former democratic democratic presidential presidential candidate candidate is is endorsing endorsing Joe Joe Biden Biden in a video on Twitter California senator Kamilla Harris threw her support behind the former vice president saying quote I believe in joke we need a leader who really does care about the people and who can therefore unify the people and I believe Joe can do that and with us right now was ABC news political analyst Steve Roberts Steve what a difference a week makes it did you anticipate Joe Biden picking up this mode the momentum this quickly no I have not I don't think anybody did I I think what we're what we're seeing though is a fascinating phenomena based on one word and that word is fear it's fear of Donald Trump and fear of Bernie Sanders Joe Biden has not been reborn as some useful charismatics move talking energetic candidates Joe Biden today is still the same Joe Biden that people have a lot of doubts about two weeks ago two months ago two years ago the difference is that Democrats have so desperate so frantic to find somebody who can beat Donald Trump that they decided that day either as a group and individually as voters and as candidates they'll camel Harris being an example of of having to rally around somebody and then choosing between Biden and Sanders the fear of Bernie Sanders is pulling the party too far to the left so there's a lot of energy around the Biden candidacy right now but in my view it's largely negative energy it's driven by fear it's driven by desperation there are not a lot of Democrats even this morning jumping up and down in Saint Joe Biden's gonna be a great candidate a great president but this negative energy is very powerful and that's what's driving this trend do you think it's now his to lose or is it too early to say that definitely has to lose end up and I think it's gonna be very difficult for Bernie Sanders to rebound here the one variable of course the one no wild card is by himself as I say he has not been report he's still the guy who can show astounding lapses of judgment he's still the guy who could make gaffes he's still the guy who can show his age very clearly he's still the guy who can appear fumbling and uncertain and in debates with Bernie Sanders and interviews it's still entirely possible for him to make damaging mistakes I think a lot of Democrats even if they rally around by they're holding their breath and hoping that Biden will get its act together and I've seen some signs a few signs of Byton improving on the stop I think he's shown a little bit more energy I think the campaign line about I'm the candidate of those who have been left behind it counted out is a defective and powerful line really echoes of a bill to written of nineteen ninety two the comeback kid although Biden's hardly a kid he's more the comeback teaser than the comeback kid and also this line of of of appealing to the concepts of dignity and civility and normalcy I think they provide a fairly stark contrast to the president who's in the oval office now but Biden is still Biden it was all of his flaws but at this point he's the Democrats best hope and it's gonna be very difficult for Sanders to capture Steve thanks for your thoughts again this morning ABC news political analyst Steve Roberts it's also worth noting that this morning one of the former
