"And the Carolina and the Green Bay Packers and his bottom line. Unless what the Titans are in on it, we don't know? The Washington commanders are in on it. We don't know. His options are retired jets or force the packers hand. And so I will say that's an overreaction. Free agency can begin at four Eastern Time on Wednesday, regardless of Rogers decision, he's just affecting two teams, and at some point, if he keeps the jets waiting any longer, jets are going to have to be out unless they're plan B is Lamar Jackson and they can't talk to him until Wednesday at four Eastern Time so they might as well wait for Rogers. There's no other choice. Since Jimmy G's is the only other in my mind viable option for them to have a potential playoff season. From the free agency pool, unless they think Baker Mayfield can be that guy. You got another one? That's it. Overreaction Monday, baby. 8 four four two O four rich, number to dial here on the program. Don't you dare move? "I don't know that specifically, obviously. To me as we speak here today on March 13th. Yes, sir. And there's a long way to go. CJ Stroud to me would be the guy that I would feel most comfortable taking because I think he's just really efficient in the pocket. He's 6 three. As I said, he's just a natural thrower of the football. CJ Stroud is the guy that really stood out. Bryce young is such a good player. But as I said, I'm just so uncertain as to the size. And not the height as we discussed. It's really the weight and the frame more than the height. But CJ Stroud would be the guy that I would probably point to at this point. Well, I mean, what would make sense about that? And again, obviously nobody's holding you to anything either. Nobody knows. I hope not. Nobody knows, Greg. Nobody knows. But it would make sense in the fact that young didn't throw at the combine Stroud did. And this move was made directly on the heels of the combine and before the new league year. I mean, truly, we were 5 days removed from packing up at the combine and this deal was struck. Right, so that does kind of dovetail in that. But then there is also the case. In fact, look, like I said, I think there's meaningful concerns about Richardson, but people look, people are going to look at Josh Allen, okay? I'm sure we discuss Josh Allen in the past rich came out of Wyoming. Now he's a better thrower than Richardson, but he was definitely scatter shot in college. And now people look at him and how he's progressed and he's clearly one of the three or four best quarterbacks in the league and his ball placement has become clearly better and it's easy to look at that and say, oh yeah, that'll happen with Anthony Richardson. You know, we don't know that, but like you said, someone will believe they can clean that up and the big playability, which is what a lot of people now, hey, you know this. That's what people look at. Explosives on offense and let's prevent explosives on defense. That's what the game in the eyes of many has become and Richardson does give you that kind of those kinds of traits. Whether he can become consistent throwing the football, that remains to be seen. Are those the only four you've grinded tape on or is there anybody else? No, I watched hinden hooker. Who I think throws the ball really, really well. He's another really easy thrower of the football. Within the context of his offense and that will be discussed as well. He played in kind of a relatively pure version of an air raid passing game with its emphasis on no huddle fast tempo, widespread formations, what we call pure progression reads, where a quarterback is not really taught to understand much about the subtleties and nuances of defense. So that will be a discussion as well. But hinden hooker is a big tall kid. He stands tall in the pocket. He throws the ball well. He's got movement ability. He's got very good traits as well. And DTR from UCLA. I've not done him in great detail. One of my favorite guys to watch though and he was at the combine. And I'm sure you spoke about him with DJ in that first group. I loved watching JK play. He really, he played, he drilled really well. There's no question about it. Last one for you. The jets are currently waiting to hear from Aaron Rodgers. What did you see out of Zach Wilson last year? Anything that makes you think that there's still something in there that he hasn't developed, that maybe Nathaniel Hackett can help or because at this point in time, as you and I are talking, either Rogers is coming and the kid's going to have a couple more years to marinate and learn at the hand of the king. Or Lamar is going to show up and he's going to have and he'll be gone. Or there's going to be some sort of stopgap that kind of forces the issue of let's see Zach if the jets struggle against a schedule that looks insanely difficult as we're sitting here in March, Greg, what's your evaluation? And again, as you and I both know, none of us are in the locker room, so I can't speak to any of that. I'm only going to speak to the tape. And he's a very loose, undisciplined player, rich in terms of mechanics, fundamentals. It's different. It seems on every single throw on every single play. He's another guy. We talk about pace and touch. He does not have pace in touch on short throws. Everything is thrown too hard. Too much velocity on those throws. He's a little bit scatter shot. So he misses too many throws. And by the way, ball placement is the term I always use because even on completions, the quarterback is more responsible for run after catch than the receiver. And when a receiver is opened by NFL standards, the quarterback is responsible, responsible both for placing it in the spot where there's run after catch. He's not a very accurate thrower of the football right now. And every once in a while, you'll see something special because just as an easy thrower, I mean, he throws it very, very easily, really good arm, loose arm, live arm, light, athletic feet, the traits look really, really good, but there's just a number of the details and nuances and the subtleties of the position and it starts with the fact that he's just so loose and undisciplined with his mechanics. I don't know how he's coached. I don't know how he was coach. I don't know how he will be coached. But if these things don't change, he's ultimately not going to get any better. Well, now, just again, total generalities, as you point out, we're not talking locker room, we're not talking about anything other than what you see on tape and what you see on tape that can translate to neck up ability and obviously neck down ability in all of that. Do you recall in all your years of grinding tape? Somebody who comes out of college looks like Zach Wilson and then eventually blossoms into a Super Bowl winning quarterback. Do you remember anything like that? I'm sure there are I've been doing this for you guys who started off poorly in their careers and ended up becoming good quarterbacks. I mean, I can't think of one immediately offhand. Okay. But I'm sure that's been true. Sometimes it takes it. But it's rare. Sometimes it takes a change of scenery. Sometimes it takes the player himself, understanding that, hey, I've got to change the way I go about doing my job. All these things you and I don't know about, obviously, we're not there. Right. Of course it can happen. Again, I don't know Zach Wilson, I never met him. But certainly when people watch him throw a football, they go, wow, anybody you talk to the year he came out because obviously he was in the Trevor Lawrence class. People will tell you, he was the best thrower. And that's just one thing. Obviously, it's important. But everybody will tell you, he was the best thrower of the football. There's many other factors that go into it. And those factors have been unfortunately too close to the bottom, as opposed to the top. Greg, thanks for the time, Matt. Let's look for more of my calls as you grow in more tape and we get closer to the draft. Always appreciate your time, sir. Rich, I really appreciate it. Thank you, my friend. "The phone line in Arizona right now for Rican. That it could be Anthony Richardson and you know he's not getting past Indianapolis. Boy, Arizona right now is sitting there saying, let's go. Who wants it? Who wants to be a quarterback? Millionaire. Phone this friend right here in Arizona because who you want? Not getting past Indianapolis. Oh, baby. Keep us guessing Carolina, please. If I had to make a guess and I shall, I would peg Bryce young, I just would, I'd peg him. As the Carolina panther choice right now, Stroud slung it, my gosh, did he sling it? And I definitely saw Anthony Richardson with my own two eyes as they popped out of my skull. I just think your trading up all that capital and by the way, it's not that much capital when you know that Carolina got a whole bunch of draft choices for Christian McCaffrey. They still have a second this year. It's San Francisco's. But man, all I heard at the combine was how smart Bryce young is and how terrific a person he is and how built he is mentally for the NFL grind and the question is what about physically and all I know is somebody who was supposedly high challenged dominated the NFC south for a long time until Tom Brady showed up. So, I'd peg it as Bryce young right now on the Monday of NFL free agency week. Vegas does differently, rich. They say Stroud. Yeah, big time big favorite. I'm here in Frank Reich loves him, too. And it could be, why would you think young because he didn't throw at the combine Stroud did? And I'm telling you, he looked terrific 6 three, coming at you. Flipping the ball in the air and hitting every window, dropping every dime. Could be strapped. Moves are popping rich. There's just stuff happening. Okay. So that's why we're on the air here. Let's do it. The negotiation window is open and up. Greg cosell will join us at the top of our number three. Greg cosell will join us. As he is grinded the tape, he's got a thought on who Carolina loves as well. And then there's overreaction Monday and man, I can not wait to hit refresh and finally find out what Aaron Rodgers is thinking because the jets, they gotta go. Gotta go. And you are making a face as if you have some information. Not about that. So that's your face that you're making that you kind of love the fact that the jets are in some sort of quarterback. No, I'm just wondering, I'm wondering if I would for you posted just a minute ago, do the jets have the nerve to bow out. Let's take into long. "Yep, absolutely. Yeah. I mean, you could coach his nitpick. That's their job. I nitpick when I watch because I learned a long time ago. You know, we're evaluating quarterbacks to win super bowls, not to go 9 and 8. You know, and I know coach Belichick's doing the same thing. They're not interested in going 9 and 8. So Matt Jones had an up and down year, more ups and downs. But I'm sure in their mind three years from now, they probably feel he'll be he can do more than he's doing now. But right now, they're running football team. That's where it starts. So I think the point you just made is a very valid one. Damien Harris could be gone. They might see Kevin Harris as a guy who can fill that role because when all said and done, Damian Harris didn't get 20 carries a game. There might have been a few games he did, but that wasn't the way they ran their offense on a weekly basis. For their second fourth round pick, the Patriots took quarterback Bailey's zappy. Yeah, I watched her Kentucky. Yeah, what's interesting is that I have a guy who does the draft stuff for me because I don't want to do the draft stuff in. And I asked him, I said, give me, give me a guy at quarterback that would develop for the Patriots, gave him the trace that the Patriots sort of look for. He said Bailey's happy. So what do you see out of Bailey's appy? You know, in an odd way, I kind of like belly's happy. I mean, I think you have to know what he is. I mean, he's 6 feet. You know, both at western Kentucky and where he was before that, which I think was Houston baptist. He ran a high volume passing game, a ton of scheme to manufactured one read or no read throws. But I thought he also showed the ability to work through progressions and make throws that demanded higher level timing. He certainly had unbelievable command of that offense. It's the same offensive ran in Houston baptist because the coach came from Houston baptist to western Kentucky. He was detailed. He was nuanced, the other issue though, which, you know, again, how do you want to deal with this when you evaluate a guy is because of the nature of the offense, Greg, there were a ton of just pitch and catch throws. Throwing it to open receivers who had free access off the ball. I mean, it was just pitching catch. So there's a lot of those kinds of throws. I kind of felt like you fell into the kind of colt McCoy chase Keenum, Tyler heinicke category, but if the Patriots seem as more than that, I could probably.

"Could you see something like that happening? Well, to be honest with you with coach Belichick, you can see a lot of things because look what he did with Adrian Phillips. I mean, Adrian Phillips was a guy who I did coming out of Texas, and I remember saying to myself, well, this guy's a dime safety in the NFL, which he turned out to be, by the way. Yeah, but look at the way coach Belichick uses him. He's essentially, he's almost a combination linebacker, as you know. He plays Robert times. He covers tight ends at times, doesn't play a whole lot on the back end, but will on occasion. I mean, you know, what coach Belichick does with a lot of these kinds of players is really fascinating to me. And you know, he doesn't just put these guys in a box, which is why, you know, when they drift and Marcus Jones, I thought, wow, that is really intriguing to me because I think he can play multiple positions and my strong guess is coach Belichick's got the same thing, or he wouldn't have drafted him. Yeah, absolutely. Let's deal with the two running backs together here. They drafted Pierre strong as South Dakota state in the fourth round. They drafted Kevin Harris out of South Carolina in the 6th round, are they the same type of backs or are they different? Okay. They're different. Pierre strong, he's kind of a smooth linear darting slashing runner. He almost looked risen at times. He's got big playability. It's a little bit of a smaller back. You know, I think that he's probably not a feature type back in the league, but I don't think he was drafted to be one by New England. You know, I think that he can be a really good receiver too. He put the ball easily. I think there's much to be unlocked as a receiver. I think you can detach him from the formation. So sorry, Greg. Go ahead. In comparison to, say, James White is coming back from hip injury. They don't really have JJ Taylor, but and they've given him some shots, but it doesn't seem they're sold on him. Could he feel sort of a pass back role for New England given development? I think yes, he could. I think he could do that for sure. I think whether that happens this year, but that I can't answer because you don't know about his development, but I think he can be in that role and then be kind of a complimentary back. He does have big playability as a runner, no question about that. I mean, he's kind of a smooth slashing thing. He almost looks rhythmic when you watch him..

"Bet online where the game starts. So the Patriots in the second round, they draft after taking a guard who most people didn't hadn't heard of before the draft, trade up into the second round and draft taekwon Thornton, a tall, skinny, blazing fast, wide receiver from Baylor, who, surprisingly, wasn't even invited to the senior bowl, stood out at the shrine bowl, but Greg, this is a guy that I think you were higher on than most that you were very intrigued by watching his film. Very intrigued. I thought he was along with James and Williams, the two most explosive vertical receivers in this draft class. And I thought his track speed showed up on tape. He got on top of. He ran by corners..

"Today is another very special edition, one that we always look forward to, you know, four or 5, 6 times we talked to him during the season and during the off season, Greg cosell, who is the executive producer analyst for NFL matchup. And also the guru just over there at NFL films. He also does a great in season podcast with fantasy points and he also did this year. I think for the first time, we're basically your notes that you go through because you watch a lot of these guys all during a year you can take meticulous notes. I watched over 200 guys, Greg, in detail. Number one man scouting service. There you go. And those were put on fantasy points as well, and I was, I was looking over them and surprisingly a little bit, you know, you took a look at you had taken a look at a lot of the guys that the Patriots ended up drafting, not coal strange in the first round, so we won't talk much about coal. They were two guys I missed on the first two days of the draft, which was the first three rounds. And unfortunately, coal strangers, one of them. Yeah. So make sure you guys go over if you want to, all of these profiles are up there over at fantasy points. Go check it out. It's really great just going off of taekwon thorn. You have Greg strengths, weaknesses, sort of other bullet points on the player. And then which is the important thing, and we'll talk about some of these players is how Greg sees their transition going from the college of pros. Like what they're going to need to work on, what they might struggle with, how early they might play, depending on the scheme, that sort of thing. So invaluable stuff, if you're still interested in the draft and the guys as a whole in this league who you're going to be seeing, go check it out over a fantasy points. So Greg, welcome. Thanks for doing this. I appreciate it. Love it, Greg love it, love being with you. So you did not take a look at coal strange. So we're not going to talk about his evaluation. Other than he's going to transition because he played tackle in college. And everybody knew he wouldn't play tackle on the NFL. Yeah, and what's interesting at the senior bowl, he played almost exclusively center. Which actually, after watching as much film as I could on the kid, a lot of senior bowl, I think he played against Kentucky at some point in time, which was sort of his coming out party. A bunch of draft picks on that Kentucky defensive line, you know, I think that he's, he's obviously going to play right away. I mean, you don't draft a guy in the first round of guard and not play him right away. And we'll see how he competes..

"Will skew things a little bit, <Speech_Male> but they have not been good <Speech_Male> against the run. It seems to <Speech_Male> be a good matchup <Speech_Male> for <Speech_Male> the Patriots in that regard <Speech_Male> and that they want to run <Speech_Male> the ball and be physical <Speech_Male> with Damien Harris and I assume <Speech_Male> or Monday streams <Speech_Male> and might be active <Speech_Male> this week <Speech_Male> to give them a dual <Speech_Male> threat. What do you <Speech_Male> think about that <SpeakerChange> side of the <Silence> ball? <Silence> Well, <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> you know, I <Speech_Male> think that that's an area <Speech_Male> that <SpeakerChange> they <Speech_Male> can exploit <Speech_Male> what the Chargers <Speech_Male> bring to the table. <SpeakerChange> I think <Speech_Male> the Chargers are <Speech_Male> not <Speech_Male> real strong at the linebacker <Speech_Male> position. <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> You know, one thing about bringing <Speech_Male> its daily is he <Speech_Male> will be very multiple <Silence> with his coverage look. <Speech_Male> So, <Speech_Male> you know, I think <Speech_Male> that the running <Speech_Male> game is a factor. <Speech_Male> I've always <Speech_Male> liked Damien Harris. <Speech_Male> He just seems to get <Speech_Male> nicked up. <Silence> But I think <Speech_Male> he's a <Speech_Male> he's a physical <Speech_Male> inside runner <Speech_Male> who's got some juice <Speech_Male> to him. So he's not <Speech_Male> just a big body, even <Speech_Male> though he's what, I don't know, <Speech_Male> two 20s in that <Speech_Male> range, is he? Yeah. <Silence> He's a pretty big <Speech_Male> dude. <Speech_Male> But I've <SpeakerChange> always <Speech_Male> liked him. <Speech_Male> I think Stevenson <Speech_Male> could well be up <Speech_Male> this week. You're right and have <Speech_Male> a nice one two punch <Speech_Male> of physicality <Speech_Male> and toughness <Speech_Male> inside. <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> To sustain offense <Speech_Male> and keep <Speech_Male> Mac Jones <Speech_Male> in a position where <Speech_Male> they can be <Speech_Male> proactive with their <Speech_Male> pass game as <Speech_Male> opposed to being reactive <Speech_Male> and long yarded <Speech_Male> situations <Speech_Male> where the defense tends <Speech_Male> to have the tactical <Speech_Male> advantage. <Speech_Male> So I would <Speech_Male> expect the run game to <Speech_Male> be a factor. I think the <Speech_Male> charges are somewhat <Speech_Male> susceptible to <Speech_Male> that. <Speech_Male> So <Speech_Male> that <Speech_Male> would not surprise me at all. <Speech_Male> And I think they want to <Speech_Male> play that way. I mean, you would <Speech_Male> know better than I, <Speech_Male> but <Speech_Male> there's no way they <Speech_Male> want Mac Jones dropping <Speech_Male> back 40 times <Speech_Male> by choice. <Speech_Male> They don't want <Speech_Male> that to happen. Unless, <Speech_Male> you know, hey, look, <Speech_Male> if for whatever reason <Speech_Male> charges jumped out <Speech_Male> 24 6 in the <Speech_Male> second quarter, everything <Speech_Male> changes. But <Speech_Male> I don't think they're <Speech_Male> going into this game with <Speech_Male> the idea <Speech_Male> that Mac Jones is going to <Silence> toss it all <SpeakerChange> over the yard. <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> Yeah, absolutely. <Speech_Male> And <Speech_Male> I <Speech_Male> haven't seen a ton of film on <Speech_Male> the Chargers, Derwin James <Speech_Male> with him coming <Speech_Male> back from injury this year. <Speech_Male> Any difference in <Speech_Male> his play any difference <Speech_Male> in how <SpeakerChange> Brandon staley <Speech_Male> is using <Speech_Male> him as oh yeah, <Speech_Male> he's and I <Speech_Male> think staley <Speech_Male> has said this, but the <Speech_Male> film shows that <Speech_Male> he is the most <Speech_Male> critical piece because <Speech_Male> they play him at four <Speech_Male> or 5 different positions. <Speech_Male> So he can <Speech_Male> do a lot of different <Speech_Male> things. <Speech_Male> And they'll <Speech_Male> use him that way. So <Speech_Male> I guess in this game <Speech_Male> it would depend on <Speech_Male> situational <Speech_Male> football. What the <Speech_Male> situation is <Speech_Male> in terms of how do they choose <Silence> to use him? <Speech_Male> I think <Speech_Male> if <Speech_Male> the Patriots <Speech_Male> continue to play a <Speech_Male> good amount at a 12 <Speech_Male> personnel with the two <Speech_Male> tight ends, you'll <Speech_Male> see him at times match <Speech_Male> up, but you'll <Speech_Male> see him at times <Speech_Male> beyond <Speech_Male> and on the ball defender <Speech_Male> and the run game. <Speech_Male> So <Speech_Male> you'll see he'll be <Silence> used in multiple <SpeakerChange> ways. <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> Interesting. <Speech_Male> All right, <Speech_Male> Greg, well, <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> that was a ton of information. <Speech_Male> I <Speech_Male> really appreciate it on <Speech_Male> behalf of our listeners <Speech_Male> and the readers at Boston <Speech_Male> sports journal dot com. <Speech_Male> I greatly appreciate <Speech_Male> you <Speech_Male> coming <SpeakerChange> aboard and <Speech_Male> lending your insight. <Speech_Male> No, Greg, <Speech_Male> I enjoyed, you know, <Silence> you know how much I love talking <Speech_Male> football. <Speech_Male> Yeah. <Speech_Male> Absolutely. "There are very there are very few like the patriot scheme where it's like, man, if we get that, that's gravy, but really we want what you do from the pocket is Paramount for us. And in terms of Jones, I think, and I'm curious what you think. If you are that type of thrower, like, say, you know, the Brady, the breeze, the Mac Jones, where, you know, you're going to be under center and in the pocket. You have to find a way to make those special throws to be special as a quarterback. And I think in my opinion, part of the outstanding opinion on Jones, and we just don't know. We don't know how is he going to evolve physically? Is his arm going to get stronger? Is he going to be able to make those type of throws when it counts? And we don't have a whole lot of examples right now. But I agree with you when that he his arm strength looks fine when he has time to gather himself a little bit and definitely step into things when he doesn't sometimes it gets a little bit iffy, but is he going to develop that part of his arsenal to move into an elite status where now I think his ceiling is probably from what we've seen, good, good, solid starting quarterback in this league. I'm just curious what you think about that. There's a lot to unpack based on what you just said. Let's start with the idea of having to be a second reaction improvisational player. Because people flippantly now throw that out as if you can not play quarterback in the NFL if you can't run around. And I think that that's too easy to say. You have to look at the process of playing the position. You know, it's very easy to look at Tom Brady and push him aside and say, oh, he's just the greatest of all time. But what's the process that got to that point? How come Tom Brady at whatever age is, 44, 45, I lose track now. I lose track of a lot of things now, Greg, but, you know, how can he still do what he's doing without any meaningful second reaction improvisational ability? So there's a process that gets you to that point. That's what has to be discussed. And where that process starts is a full understanding of your offense and a complete understanding of defenses generally and the specific defenses that you're going to play against because the Brady's the breezes and I know I'm speaking about Hall of Famers, but it's the process. Those guys win 99% of the time before the ball is snapped. They know where they're going with the ball. They're not surprised. They're not getting a free rusher that all of a sudden, wow, where did he come from? You know, so I think Mac Jones ultimately is that kind of quarterback. Is he a non athlete? No. Is he going to make a career out of running around? No. You know, we saw this past week against the jets where he didn't make a few plays where he left the pocket. Can he do that on occasion? Sure..

"I am thrilled to welcome Greg cosell from NFL films NFL matchup show, Tsar of the film are of everything. Greg, thanks for thanks for joining us again. I appreciate it. I think last time you was maybe pre draft, I think. I think it was pre draft, yes. Yep. Before we went down the Mac Jones road. So actually, let's sort of start there. First off, I want to say, this is a very this is a very friendly space. It's a comforting space. There is no judgment. I simply, this is where I just, I like to talk to smart people and get their opinions and Greg and I have sort of discussed off air. My opinions about Mac Jones so far and I would just love to hear what Greg thinks so far of Mac Jones on film. Well, I would say I would answer it this way. I don't think there's a lot of mystery to what Mac Jones was coming out of college. And I don't think there's a lot of mystery to what he's doing now. I think that he's a timing rhythm player. I think he's decisive. I think he knows what he's looking at. The ball comes out. He does not have a big arm. He can't really drive the football. But he can navigate within the pocket to some degree because he's not really a stride thrower. He can throw without really striding into it so he can throw and there's not a lot of space. I think that you have to in some ways set him up for throws, but I will say this. One thing that I think he has done well. And there are examples of this through these 7 games I believe it is. I think that he's done a very good job of being able to recognize things post snap when there has been some disguise and late movement. And I think it started week one. I think he does see that quickly. I think he has an innate feel for seeing things. And therefore he is able, as I said, Greg, to throw the ball to the right receiver at the right time with the necessary kind of throw. So I think we all or I did anyway, watching his tape in Alabama felt like he could do this. You know, the big question. Well, I guess I'd say this. What he is is he's an executor and a ball distributor. And there's nothing wrong with that. Because every quarterback is a system quarterback. That has become a negative pejorative term, but that's the way the position is taught. And he's an efficient executor and a ball distributor. One of the things we talked about pre draft. And I think you sort of had the question and from talking to a bunch of different evaluators because I was high on Jones. I had him after Lawrence and Wilson. I believe the hype in Mac Jones. And I thought he would fit the Patriots perfectly. But one of the things we talked about is the whole do you need the off schedule throws to be successful in the NFL because there are some schemes that are almost dependent on it at this point in time..

"But the kid me me belief and you go back to you. What he has been on tape. And then you go with what you believe in the person and i guess the accumulation of those two things by the end. It was a very easy decision and trae. Lance had a heck of a weekend twenty got in there Against the chargers last night. We'll talk about that in a matter of moments right here on the rich eisen show back here on the rich eisen show with our radio. Audience are peacock audience peacock. Tv dot com to watch us everyday. We've got some interesting and some exciting name image and likeness rich eisen show news to announce coming up. Shortly you're on the program very excited But for the moment let's check on Some all twenty two with Some of these kids trying to make starting jobs less than three weeks from now We Check in once again with One of our top evaluators and all the land. Greg cosell of nfl films. Back here in richeisenshow. How're you doing. Greg rich great to be with you. Thank great to have you here all right. The the kids are all right. What do you think the kids. What do you got. you know. it's a good reference by the way i You know it's it's funny When when you do the evaluation of college quarterbacks pretty much everybody can see the traits the attributes. We all have a pretty good sense of of what those are and with all these young quarterbacks. There's there's not a lot of mystery to what they are. But when you get to the league then what it comes down to is executing the game plan executing the place and that's the way coaches think they call plays. They put together a game plan and they weren't all that executed so while we all can love traits when all said and done you they want plays executed. And it's hard to get a great feel for that when a quarterback doesn't throw a lot of balls doesn't get a chance to work through a game but you see glimpses but you also see some glimpses of things that you say that's going to have to be better and by the way. There's nothing wrong with saying that. I know a lot of people. Think when you say something like that it means you don't like the quarterback but i guarantee that that's the way they're being coached okay so No hall of fame yet for these guys probably not. Although i decided to wear a goal jacket to do to talk to you there we go all right so What do you make the justin fields. Play where he was Had his helmet knocked off. When you look at the all twenty two was at something he should have seen common. Linemen screwed it up. I mean What what are you. What do you just that play in particular in the rest of the evaluation of fields from this past weekend so far. Well let's look at it overall Because i think the first weekend. And i thought he played well the first weekend. Then what really struck me was. He looked very poised. He looks very comfortable I thought this weekend he played a little faster. You know. it's always easy when you're watching a quarterback if there's people around him say that the offensive line is bad and granted. The bears do not have a great offensive line. And he's playing with backups for the most part But i think that one of the things you have to learn in this league as a quarterback even if you have really good legs and can make plays with your legs. Is you have to get an innate. Feel what pressure is and what pressure isn't just because there are people around you in the. Nfl does not mean that there's pressure and when you're very athletic and field is a big kid. He's a big athlete with outstanding movement ability. And so i'm sure the hope is is that he can utilize ability to move as he grows into the position. And that you never know if that's totally going to happen or not. But in this league you have to be able to finish your progressions as a quarterback and pressure is a very relative term And a lot of people see bodies around a quarterback rich and they just automatically assume that's pressure that's not necessarily the case so How would you evaluate him with A date with the rams coming up in less than three sundays from now. Now greg cosell first of all we don't based on what's been said. It's it doesn't appear. He'll be the starting quarterback but we don't know the answer to that but My he's very talented kid in terms of his ability to move in terms of visibility to throw. Then what has to happen is he has to develop in gr- has to better developed details. The nuances of the position so that he can play from the pocket with some kind of consistency and execute the game plan and the play calls. And by the way everything. I'm telling you rich is totally expected. If you would talk to any coach. I'm talking about a coach in the league. They would tell you this this off. Quarterbacks tape take time to develop and what. They're trying to do through these. Preseason games is to give quarterbacks and opportunity to be successful with play calls like he did touch down two weeks ago and then he hit the big play this week Both of those were schemed. Vertical routes they were specific. Play calls that they pretty much knew would present a one read. Throw down the field. And you're trying to get your quarterback to be successful with those kinds of things so we can feel comfortable playing from the pocket. Greg cosell here On the rich eisen show. What have you seen from Out of trae lance so far yet trae. Lance has been a really interesting to watch. He's another guy that's got a lot of physical tools. He's very very talented. His first game he was all over the place. He was a little frenetic He threw the ball to heart. He's still having a tendency at times. Throw the ball with a little too much velocity when a little taste and touch is required I thought it's twenty last night. I thought and i watched the tape this morning. I thought kyle shanahan understood after his first two possessions last night that he was just a little chaotic because the sack that ended his second series was on him. he had sherefield wide open on crosser but didn't turn it loose and that was a perfect example of what pressure is and what pressure isn't people probably saw body around him to his frontside and thought that's pressure he needed to make that throw throw had to be made so of hand started the third possession good looking to get him comfortable and outside screen a slant flat concept basic concepts that that are real easy to execute and then he sort of settled into the game a little bit..

"And then you could not have been more honest with the with the with the way that you were assessing everything. Let's walk into. When did trae lance have you. Did he have you at. Hello walked me through the process of when you decided. This is the kid for us. It's not just as simple the first time you see him. It's a slam dunk. Yes and that's what. I was trying to explain that. When i looked at them in january. The first time. I've finished with a tape. I was just i mean i got about four games and Collected a bunch of stuff over to john now night and i was just so excited and intrigued by the stuff that you can do with them and he had looked the part in so many ways a quarterback and then looking into the running elements. So i was kind of just an amer- with stuff from the get-go And then when you move to a spa we do. You got such a long process to do it the right way so the way. I felt at the beginning back in january. I'm not gonna just sit there and allow myself to be set in stone. I always joke my wife drive crazy. The way of buy houses I think like something. But then i tell her every single thing. That's wrong about it. I told the the real estate age everybody and then she's almost in tears thinking i hate it and then my car. That's the one. I want that happened. I i'm just checking myself and the like we loved them from the beginning. But then you got you know. We were trying to make that trade early february so and i think we gotta done a little over a month ago but i'm for about two and a half months i'm looking through everything and try not to Jump to conclusions too fast but Interviewing every coach interview and every scout having guys come in china. I don't want people in our office to know which way i'm leaning Because you can go semi so many different directions and they're all such good candid this But just to play out the process the way we did too where i got to know the kid after watching the tape. And now it's kind of the coolest thing to where i really started to like trade a person As a person to be the quarterback of your team just believing the leader it could be How much she gets soaking and how important it was to them. And i think the best thing for me was if i would have done the process the opposite way so i was trying to tell peter on this weekend but if i would have done the kid i i probably would have fell in love with the guy and then i would like man. Do i hope this tape matches and and it would have. And that's kinda win you know. What's the guy. I did the first which i felt tokyo about. But you know you don't play to two thousand twenty season on those kind of scary. He's out a smaller school Doesn't have a lot of throws on tape. He's got three hundred and something but that's a lot less than everyone else. So you think of all those reasons that could make nervous But the kid me me belief and you go back to you. What he has been on tape. And then you go with what you believe in the person and i guess the accumulation of those two things by.

Greg Cosell breaks down Patriots QB candidates
"Pleased to welcome in Greg Cosell. Everybody knows over forty years and NFL films the guru over various the matchup show. You know, he's he's seen it all he's done it all he's and in fact, he's been one of my mentors over the years. He's welcomed me in the NFL films to watch wage different film with different people. I think he's one of the most knowledgeable people around the NFL in terms of film and I love the way he analyzes things in in fact listening to him off of recenters me in terms of I need to look at things a little bit more at a distance Greg. Thanks for joining us. I really appreciate it Greg. It's my pleasure to put a while my friend. It has been a while back, but I wanted to get you in on this and you're actually the first outside guess that I've had on my podcasts and you know, obviously the Patriots are at a weird time in the Their existence at least since Bill Belichick has been there with with Tom Brady gone and what they went through last year with Cam Newton. So they are obviously looking for their next quarterback and and that could go wrong in a variety of different ways. And I wanted to have you on just to get sort of your opinion what you've seen how you think things fit with the Patriots in terms of guys that are available right now veterans and also some of the Practical quarterback so but first I want to start with let's go back to this past season. I don't know how much you watch the Patriots considering they fell off a map there about this way of it took. Okay. So I just wanted to get your general impressions of the Patriots offense first year without Tom Brady Cam Newton in there. Just what did you see? What did you think of cams faith? And and why did you think things didn't go great for the Patriots offense last year, you know the best way I can answer that is just with what the film showed because I don't know Greg is you know the game Ovation, you know, I'm certainly not there. I don't know what's in Bill Belichick's head, but they played as if they did not want the passing game to be a big factor in their offense. Now, I'm not going to sit here and say that's Cam Newton. Like I said, I don't know the reasoning behind it. But we know in a league in which the passing game is clearly more predominant with the exception of maybe two or three teenage more predominant that the running game and clearly more so that the Patriots were not one of those teams. They were numerous games that I watched on tape where I felt watching the tape that they don't really want to throw the ball very much. So again, I can't speak to the reason why but we know in today's NFL it's hard to win a thousand up a lot of points playing that way. In in no question, I one thing I wanted to know I certainly have my opinion from watching them over the years and no one expected Cam Newton to come in and be Tom Brady at the line of scrimmage before the snap. But God, how did it appear to you that the Patriots were limited and what they did as far as checks audibles things like that that we would have seen them do in the past. I would say that's fair. You know, it's always hard to know so many people's you know on Twitter social media think they know what a quarterbacks doing at the line of scrimmage. I'm not that smart Greg. I do not know what the quarterbacks doing at the line of scrimmage just because I hear him yell out a few words. So, you know it appeared to be the case that they did less at the line of scrimmage cuz certainly one of the things that God has made Tom Brady great and there's obviously many things but one of the things that I always thought made him great was he won a large percentage of the Downs before the ball was snapped off. I never got the sense that that was Cam Newton's game even in Carolina, which doesn't mean he never did that. Of course every Quarterback does That to some degree but I thought that that was one of the the key components of Tom Brady's game. So my sense is they did not do quite as much of that this year. But then again, I don't think their offense had as many elements to age. Which goes back to my initial point I can't speak to why that was the case, but it didn't strike me that it has as many elements to it. When cam did throw the ball or when he went back to past? How long do you think he did as a whole on the season as far as you know, making the right read and also, you know, just the way he threw the ball. I think he was pretty much the cam that he's always been I think he's always been a little bit erratic. I think he's streaky. I think he'll miss throws that are relatively routine that he should make an make some throws and you go. Wow that guy can really throw it. I think that's the way he's been much of his career. He's always had some scattershot Tendencies and he'll miss some so I think that he was really no different this year than he has been in previous years. He obviously through the ball less than he had in previous years with the exception of a couple of games. It was not an offense. Other than the Running part of it, it was not really an offensive built around him throwing the football. Yeah,

The Dallas Cowboys and their internal battle for an offensive identity
"You're if you bet football if your fantasy football all I just love football and what kind of meat sandwich the little. Bits and pieces of film study of Greg Cosell forty years. NFL films somebody. I rely on for the draft after I rely on for a lot of my insight and Greg Cosell is joining us. Greg how were you pre-thanksgiving. How are you doing great? Hope you have a great Thanksgiving tomorrow. Thank Hugh very much. So we watched Dallas in New England. One of my questions with Dallas all year has been. What is their offense of identity? When you watch film what what do you think? They think they're offensive identity. Is I think they're struggling right now. To determining whether their offense still runs through through Ezekiel Elliott or whether they believe that they can transition into a little bit more of a passing team. Given the fact that they're three receivers are among the top two-three receiving trios in the NFL The other issue. I think they're struggling with that. Plays into this is the fact that for the most part over the last three or four weeks. They've not run on the ball as efficiently as they had earlier in the season. So I think they're. They're struggling with exactly what their identity is. They had a really difficult time with New England when you play new England Colin. You have to be able to defeat man coverage you can do that with scheme or you can do that by finding your best individual matchups. They really couldn't do either. And I guess what a Super Bowl is what a high powered offense that puts up a lot of points that the aerobically has the ability to put up forty any given week with the saints. We know can do that to Cowboys would not fit into that category. They're built old school. It's a run game coun- Dacian with a high level foundation back. It's an execution run game without much misdirection. And deception as we see with a lot of teams in the league. And it's a pretty basic pass game that by NFL standard. Would probably be considered somewhat remedial elementary. So to me, this sort of interesting point and not at this one game will decide one way or the other. But it's sort of interesting to me to think about it in a larger world view as to whether the Cowboys are theoretically built structurally to win a Super Bowl that kind of team. What do you think? I think they would their defense would have to be really really good. I think because I don't believe that offensively. They would be able to generate enough points. Now that again, if you defense is really really good, and you can win games twenty three twenty maybe twenty seven Twenty-three, then guess, but they're not built to get into a shootout. If that's what you believe is required to win meaningful playoff games and Super Bowls right now. I can't wait for the matchup. I I love watching the Cowboys defense right now. And I'm with you, Greg. The Cowboys might not be created. But it feels like what they're doing right now. It's kind of working. Well, yeah. I mean, people when singing mind they're also six and five we're not talking about a team. That's you know, nine and two. So they're they clearly have a distinct profile we talked about it. And that's the way they have to play. I mean, look it always helps your past game when you can throw six yard passes or fifteen yard passes that become long gains every team loves that. Because those are not high risk throws. Although I will say that I thought that the ninety are touchdown to Cooper was Prescott. Who was clearly Prescott. Best throw of the game versus the Redskins and one of his best of the season. Because I thought that he did such a good job with progression reading and then making a tight window throw. So I thought that was actually one of his best throws of the season. And how about Greg drew Brees throwing touchdown passes to four undrafted free agents that a lot of people have never even heard of. Yeah. That that's true. You know, breezes just a joy to watch for someone like myself because now again, we reached an era to where people talk about quarterbacks that have to be able to run around. And and I'm not going to sit here and tell you that that's not a good trait to have that time, but to watch a quarterback play at the level that he plays from the pocket with his understanding of what he's seeing before the snap. The ability to move and manipulate defenses after the snap and the accuracy with with Keith rose throw after throw is remarkable. But I think another thing that is kinda lost with the saints because

NFL films since I was born and just seemingly the executive producer and now on air talent of the NFL matchup show forever that by the way, if you're not DVR airing it, you're just doing it wrong. Craig, a lot to talk about, obviously we got a big game tonight between the Bengals and the ravens, both of whom had double digit wins in week one. But I, I wanna start with a week ago and the falcons and the eagles. And obviously, you know, the penalties was not real fun, but net. What? What were some of the things that really stood out to you or interested you from that game? Oh, well. That's a pretty broad based question. You know, that was a game that was. It was a tough game to watch just because it was it was sloppy football, which I guess we should expect for week one. I think the eagles defence to me continues to stand out. They do some things that are pretty intriguing on the defensive side of the ball. As far as their coverage concepts, we all know they have a good defensive line. We know Fletcher Cox, a great player. We know that Cox can line up in numerous spots at the detector position and physically dominate guards and and centers. But you know, to go into the weeds just a little bit raw. They do something where the coverage that I think is in the cover three family. But what they do with it is really, really interesting keeping the single high safety really low almost like he's a robber and their corners playing with some cushion, but hard to the inside. It's a really interesting concept for teams that liked to throw the ball inside which the falcons do and actually their opponent this week, the bucks do. So it's just a coverage that I notice. To last year that they started using and they used it quite a bit against the falcons. And I think you'll continue to see it based on the opponent for people that don't know what a robber is, Greg. Can you explain that? Well, that's where you take a player and and you sort of sit him right in the middle of the field. You can do it at different depths depending on what Petit killer defense playing the eagle's actually use the so-called deep safety as a robber normally, teams do not use a robber who's who's the aerobically the deepest defender in the middle of the field, like teams like the patriots play a coverage that we call man, we call one robber and they take a safety and he is the robber who kind of sits maybe ten twelve yards from the line of

It's breaking down the games. It's awesome. It's big show. All right, Gregg. It is finally here real football, regular season. Football will have you every week here on Thursdays breaking down, not only the Thursday night football game, but the biggest games of the weekend because you're already doing that in prepping for that for the unbelievable show. You have the NFL matchup show on ESPN and of course the great work you do for NFL films as well. Let's start with the Thursday night or Greg eagles falcons. What are you most intrigued about in this matchup. Oh, that I'm actually intrigued with how the falcons choose to play offense with their personnel. For this reason, Nigel Brad will not play in this game, and it would seem to me that the falcons would wanna stay with base personnel quite a bit which they do. They do often play with two tight. They do play with a fullback, but I think they would want the eagles linebackers assuming the eagles play with three linebackers. They may decide to go big nickel and play Graham, the safety almost as a linebacker or Jenkins can do that as well. But I think you wanna put the eagles in that situation Ross and then line up with a lot of base personnel. Obviously, they won't do that on third nine, but I think you wanna see how the eagles are going to handle that with nine zero, Brad out of the game because the only real starting linebacker they will have out there is Jordan Hicks, their middle linebacker, and he's coming off. I believe in Killys injury. Yeah, I was gonna ask you out of the guys other than once al-shabaab Jeffrey and TIMMY Jernigan as well as Nigel, Brad, which guy hurts him the most. And it sounds like you you think it might be Brad them? I think it could be yes. The other intriguing element to this game is just what you mentioned with the eagles missing Jeffrey and MAC Hollins who will be out as well. I think that you'll see a lot of two tight end sets, and I think the rookie Dallas guttered we'll get significant snaps in this game. So that's the on that side of the ball. That's the the other element that intrigues me in this game. Totally agree. You know, Greg eagles fans are very nervous about Nick foles and the fact that he's not played well in the preseason. Do you have a read on that? I mean, he has had a history in his career of being up and down guy, a major history. There's a very wide variance in his play. I think he needs to be schemed. I think the eagles did such a good job with that and in the playoffs last year. And I think you'll see a lot of that. They'll be a major chess match. Going on here, don't forget. Teams of now had an off season all teams, but certainly the falcons have had an off season to figure out how better to defend run, pass option concepts. And I know the eagles are trying to expand those concepts as well. So I think that that's a critical dimension to this game.
