"greg byrne" Discussed on The Paul Finebaum Show

"Right now to greg bourne with this athletic director at alabama in greg alabama has been successful in so many sports. We'll we'll we won't even address football quotient but but they won national championships in countless events but basketball always been close. But never quite getting there. what have you seen I in this transformation with nato and this may be an easy question or maybe a difficult question but what what is the what is the. What is the ceiling for alabama basketball. Well one of the things when we had our very first Meeting when when regina and i were fortunate to be able to come to alabama we said hey you know we'd won in a lot of sports for a long time here but we're we are alabama. We should be good and we're not going to apologize for wanting to do that. you want to be respectful and you wanna have humility in your approach. But you should have confidence in alabama that you can have success and so as we as we looked at our men's basketball program we have had a lot of success in the past obviously went had some great teams and see him and had some incredible teams to. And you know we've had some ups and downs route you know and and when we were looking at what. We're where our strengths were. If you look at if you look at Within the state alabama there are going to be some young men and young women for other sports. That are that are going to have the opportunity to have the ability to play here in alabama. But the other thing that you have is you. Want to be able to have riddick recruiting connections that give you national Reach and sometimes even international reach. We've got two young men on our men's basketball program from canada. And the alabama brand does stretch across the country and sometimes stretches to other parts of the world and so we need to use that to our strength to be able to recruit young men young women that gives us the best opportunity to compete. What we do. I mean this is. This is big time. Se college athletics. And that's what we want to be a part of. And it's it's it's great that you can recruit people here that want to be a part of the same thing then let's go out and compete and give it a chance to go when titles and have great experiences that our kids can have a great accomplishment part of and then at the same time to That are fans can enjoy. Be part of an. They need balance all that with the academic responsibilities that we have in part to and it's The success we've had academically heard alabama are top notch. So whatever we do we want to do well. And we're fortunate to be able to do that from time to time here greg. I like to close by by talking about one player in particular because we had the opportunity to meet him a few weeks ago. You know. i'm a lot better and that is the sec player of the year. Herb jones You know there are. There were more. Recruited heavily recruited players. We fixate on things like that but Really really interested in your thoughts on getting to know him and watching him progress. Well we have six hundred and fifty. Student athletes seared alabama and And obviously try to get to know as many of them as you possibly can a herb. I've been around now for four years. You wanna talk about a selfless individual. He does whatever he can do for his team to give us the best opportunity to win ballgames. He puts in the work tirelessly on his own at the same time too. He plays on both ends of the floor and he was talking to a friend of mine that works in the nba about her recently. And i said he can. He can guard all five spots at the college level. That doesn't happen very often. But he can also play all five spots on the on the office of side of the ball to i mean he plays point for us a lot and herbs their legitimate six foot nine six six with eight six foot nine and so each. Just wonderful young man. You wanna talk about if you. If in the dictionary you know a team player her jones would be right there front and center because of the approach has i know. It's only been a couple of times a handful of times in the history of the sec. Somebody when the sec player of the year and defensive player of the year is all you need to know about her and just the Takes on a daily basis. Greg bourne the director of athletics at alabama. Greg thanks for coming by. It's always a pleasure for us to have you here and we hope to see very soon at. Thanks paul i appreciate it. And also i talked to my mom just for came on a big fan of your show and so it's birthday today so i had to make sure i give her a happy birthday on the too so roll tide and happy fantastic. You've got you've got. Some great parents. Had the pleasure of meeting both of them. Thank you very much. Greg byrne joining us and happy. Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott stepping down at end of June

"Last night. Perhaps the least surprising news of twenty twenty one came out that larry scott was stepping down stepping down being a charitable word as the pac twelve commissioner. Nobody better to talk to than jon wilner. Who covers that league. Expertly out there on the west coast john. Great to have you with us and here we go beginning the new year and things are upside down in the pac twelve. What else is new. Good afternoon thanks while yeah There's never a shortage of Of off the field developments. That's for sure on the field. That's kind of the same same story for many years now but but It's it's pretty interesting conference off field. I remember distinctly. It seemed like yesterday although it was many years ago. When when larry was brought in he was brought in from professional tennis everybody raved about him. He did things different. He had media days in new york. He smooths southern at national championship games. And all that out you know. I would contend that he was the right hire for the pac twelve back then two thousand nine to ten and was able to execute on a lot of the high priorities but also argue that he is not the right commissioner for the pack twelve right now and the last couple of years have seen a series of of missteps that have Hurt the conference You know hurt. The brand hurt the football product specifically And just kind of got pulled everything into this. You know Sinkhole how and exactly who will help the pac twelve. Talk some of the candidates that i mean. I've seen at least twenty five names mentioned who is realistic to get this job too. Great question I think the the the the problem is it's hard to know exactly what the patch will presents are going to do because they've got these gigantic media rights negotiations coming up here in a couple of years and so there is some thought that they hire someone from the sports media. industry You know a tv executive basically to kinda head the head the process at the negotiating table But then there's a school of thought that you know they had brought larry scott in from from You know the pro sports world. He didn't have any experience in college. Athletics and and there were problems because of that so they should take a more traditional approach and higher you know a sitting athletic director particularly maybe one that's got You know the football powerhouse so until you know kind of which direction the president's wanna go. It's hard to really pinpoint candidates. But certainly if they'd go a traditional route you can you can figure on some of the top name being being contacted. I would think. I wanna go through every name because i think sometimes i. Maybe i'm dubious of reporters pushing people. But i i've been in that shoe. We've been in those shoes before as you have. But let's talk about a realistic group of people that could figure into this job. Well realistic group You know I was just from from your territory. You know i would think greg byrne If they decided that they wanted to go more traditional route. I would think that there would be some conversations. And they're gonna hire search for him to to do the legwork. I would certainly think that there'd be some outreach. To greg burned you know he He has ties to four different pac twelve schools. He worked at oregon and oregon state We was young He went to arizona state. He was the ada at arizona. Obviously the guy knows college football Which is a big issue for the pac. Twelve right football products gotta get improved. So you know i could see a scenario in which they they at least had a conversation with burnt Maybe even the same thing with g smith you know he. He was the athletic director at arizona state before he moved to columbus I wonder if bob dole's be you know was at stanford before he became the big twelve. Commissioner you know. I i think the actual probably would be smart at least make a phone call and see both i was tired of dealing with texas And ready to maybe move back to the west coast So that those are few names. But i do think that if they go the traditional route. They're gonna wanna have somebody who has been on a pack twelve campus. They don't want to bring in somebody who doesn't understand you know the the culture out here I think that that's going to be important for them. Is is somebody who at least has some ties to the west.

"You you ask and they won't answer those questions or they'll say our program sol-solid that we can overcome I mean you know one of the things that that delay in prosecuting these cases are processing them is is that I think Recruits can figure if I'm really good and I'm a WanNa done how I can be in and out of there before anything happens and the other thing is I think that most recruits probably think rightly that baked me released from a letter of intent rather quickly if if major sanctions brought down but it is surprising and extremely frustrating to other teams in the SEC to see the recruiting successes is these cases lag. How Sabans Absence Will Affect Georgia vs. Alabama

"Bill Connolly I asked our mutual friend Spencer Hall how I should be introducing you here today Oh God. And he said very flatly. Bill is the godfather of college football analytics. So I hope you accept that title. I mean it's I'm not GonNa say it was survival of the fittest is basically I google to college football analytics in about two thousand seven and it came up with basically result. So I, started doing it. So I. I kinda one by default, but I'll take it. Bill Conley now writes about college football for ESPN. So Bill I was all set to talk to you about the rich pageantry the back story to what was GONNA be the most anticipated college football game of the year and then twenty two, thousand, eight just got in everything and so we're GonNa talk about all the non covert angles to this game. Let's talk about the pandemic stuff I because Wednesday evening. We got news that Alabama coach Nick Sabin and the school's Athletic Director Greg Byrne both tested positive for covid nineteen. So as the basic SCO, we are talking this through on Thursday afternoon. What do we know what don't we know about Sabin and how much coaching can that guy do or not do remotely. So technically know the answer to that last part the if coaches in quarantine, he cannot you call in plays to the press box he cannot communicate with the actual coach's coaching the game of via. Zoom or whatever that is the rule as it's been laid out obviously that kills any great visions of them Willingham up and down the sideline with a on a little robot thing with a monitor ipad at the top of it we don't get any of that apparently but the rules as stated for these Special Times says that you can't do that and he will not be able to communicate and the coach himself. How is he feeling a medically? Do we know anything about that Wednesday evening win the actual diagnosis was announced he said he had no symptoms and. His daughter at one point actually tweeted out she. She announced very clearly she had permission from him to tweet it out, and then he was coaching the practice via zoom and whatnot. Okay. So that is at the very least some good news in a chaotic situation. Let's get back to that many robot proposal that you had because I was Kinda. Hoping. Like Nick Sabin would just appear on a projection screen somehow. Like Zorro Don, from power rangers, we lean towards absurdity in college football that would've been the best situation, but apparently, not apparently not. But like could he theoretically text someone on staff if he doesn't like the cut of the middle linebackers footwork Jib or something like is there creative wiggle room here? In College football, there are the rules and there are other rules you can prove you broke. So if he wants to tech somebody in the booth, I'm pretty sure nobody's GonNa GonNa figure that out I don't think you have to give your cell phone up at the door maybe maybe now you do I don't know but I'm pretty sure. He could probably get in touch with somebody if he really wanted to. So we don't know how Sabin contracted the virus yet. We. Don't know who else might test positive over the next day or so but it's also not the first time. A coach had to sit out a game this season because of a positive test, I think of Mike Norval, at Florida state. So those other situations shed any light on how this one might develop. Well Yeah, I think so far if I'm not mistaken Mike novell's the only coach who had to miss a game. You're others kind of Soda speak got a little lucky less miles had minor symptoms but his team was on a bye week at Kansas when he tested positive Blake Anderson at Arkansas. State. He had a fever for a decent amount of time, but I don't think they played a game during that time. So it was basically Mike Nevada, Florida state the Way College coaching works you know Sunday through Friday is is kind of the bigger deal and then Saturday just put the boat out in the sea and see what happens. So a having a former head coach Steve Sarkissian being able to take over maybe that's worth. It really pays off because plenty of guys still have lots of experience on that staff. So, Bill do we have faith here that there is not an outbreak situation going on? Well, one thing that Alabama has going for them is that they are either the only or one of the only programs in the that that is doing daily testing. So at the very least, you know that's not a substitute for contact tracing by any means, but it kinda stops contact. If nothing else you can more quickly address in isolate and all that. But Y- Way College football has worked this fall. You know basically a team puts out a press release on on Saturday morning and we are going to be without eighteen players. Thank you and that's all we really hear about it really has been a share as little information as possible kind of situation. So. It's it's something I. Don't know what it is. It's something.

"Nick Saban, the head football coach at Alabama has tested positive for covert 19 what we know right now, J. We know that he says he found out earlier this afternoon and in a statement that the school released earlier today, he says that he is asymptomatic. So we found out went home immediately. He is working from home and offensive coordinator Steve Sarkeesian will oversee preparations at the complex. As he says In that statement, Also the athletic director of the University of Alabama Greg Burn, says he has tested positive today as well. He tested positive this morning. He He says that he wanted to self isolation immediately. We've been diligent about mask worrying and social distancing from the start and want to continue to encourage you all to take the necessary precautions to help stop the spread of the virus for yourself and those around you. So this is the first coach in the SEC to get it, especially this close to a game and face use. Mike Norville also had it earlier this year. But they played the game without him. So we'll see if that's what happens between Georgia, Alabama, but right now still scheduled for eight o'clock

"They cried passion than patterns re of college football leaves here. This is the Paul finebaum show best podcast. We've made into Friday afternoon. And we appreciate your watching us. We know there couple of other options today and go back and forth between us and the games. We will certainly keep you up dated. But we're glad to have you on board for those on TV on radio. We'll also keep you with twenty of updates because I realized if you're driving around you may not know what the scores are. But we have a lot of headlines to share with you as we begin this Friday afternoon. Bryce, drew is out three years into his journey. The anchor has gone down. And he has been fired after the first winless SEC season and sixty five years at the school surprise, some people. But if you look at the last two years, it shouldn't be a big shock. The search is on with a new athletic director. Well, bam up trying to. Dispatch Avery Johnson after. Beyond humiliating in IT loss Wednesday night the school quickly started negotiating with every four his exit. When you compare him to the previous coaches, both of whom were also fired. He doesn't fare very well Godfrey police went to the elite eight in five appearances Anthony grant had a better overall record. Every Johnson will be fired. We'll be bought out. He's reportedly trying to get another job in the school probably wouldn't mind that it would cut down on a eight million dollar buyout. But he will not be back at Alabama. Kentucky wondering when PJ Washington is coming back. He didn't miss yesterday's snooze Urrutia against Abbott Abilene Christian. Will he be ready for tomorrow is the question will they need him for Tamar might be the answer? The answer is no they will not next week. Yes. Meanwhile, LSU and UK prospect show their skills at pro day today. Some of you were watching earlier. Lot athletes abo- schools a lot of prospects as well. And we say Hello to you lot going on. And there's one SEC school that has already played in college basketball today. We'll playing might be an exaggeration almost went down and went down badly to Oklahoma listening to Paul finebaum show podcast Clint up next in Kansas. Hey clint. Hey. Hey, thanks to my call thanking absolutely wanted to talk about the next hour. Bama coach. But I wanna go to Greg Byrne. I do you think he's already got a pretty good idea. The next coach is already is going to be. Absolutely, Greg Greg Byrne, Greg Byrne, is is a smart athlete director. And he didn't he didn't roll out of bed Thursday morning and decide to make this change. He probably has been thinking about it for some time. And and I have to go back to our interview with every other day and the way he handled the questions indicated to me that he knew he was under a normal pressure. He reacted in an unable Johnson like way, very petty and petulant and Greg Byrne clearly saw that interview. And he clearly knows what what he's been seeing all year, and I've already has three or four candidates in his back pocket and probably can't do very much right now because some of them are in the NCAA tournament. Absolutely. Well, my option would be read virg- with my number choice. I don't think we could only hard to pull him out mid west. But if not Fred Hoiberg, I know there's some help. Concerns about this guy. But I know that model would be grand. I've I've heard about mentioned a couple times. And I think he's to coach again, he he's really a very coach got his team to a final four couple years ago. Jeff is up there in. What's going on Paul? How are you? Jeff. What's going on guys? Do great getting sad Mada. Actually, I I heard a rumor he might be looking at UNLV. But I don't know how serious here's the problem. UNLV's open an EMS open Vanderbilt's open. Alabama's open the second. Somebody leaves somewhere else that job will be open. So it's not a great time to be looking for a basketball coach. At sounds like basketball just means more down there in the SEC. Throwing out left. And right. Finally..

"And it wasn't that great of a crowd. You know, a lot of the the weather the rain and even some tornado warnings in the area kinda had a lot to do with that. But I still think there are people that support this program you're coming off a year where you had to win on the buzzer beater to make the NCW terminal you had a NBA lottery pick as your point guard. And yeah, they don't really have that Goto score this year like the device you with Colin. You'll have a seventeen year old point going guard Cuyler tire Lewis is kind of developed into that. But it's just been inconsistent. And so I think you'll fans kinda wanna see that consistency return, or at least your show it's faced and it hasn't come to that point yet. And I think that's where the frustration lies. You can turn on the TV or go to. A game that albums playing in. And you're not gonna know what you're going to get. And I think that's where most of the frustration comes from. And I they go out and be an LSU and beat Auburn at home whenever you know, them as football team's going to be president and get the iron bowl trophy. I think some of that perception thoughts will change. But right now, there's a lot of people that are frustrated, and you know, I think if if things would have fought the rails a little bit that'd be that'd be even more frustrating conference change, not to play the worst case scenario. But I will let say they don't make the field and before people get too carried away. You always have to look to what is next. And by that I mean in recruiting what does it look like for Avery Johnson for next year? Yeah. I mean, that's always interesting. There's there's they don't have anybody committed right now, the the twenty twenty class, and you know, they have some some potential out there. You have one of the most exciting players in the state in a long time in Trinidad watchword, Alabama's among his talk group there. And you know, you're gonna have to survey the southeast and the state does look at that. But there's nobody committed right now. And that's always I guess cause for concern. But basketball returning so weird anyway. And I think that it's going to be interesting to see see what happens if album, it doesn't go out and and make the tournament, you know, that affects players decisions players outside of the state. And you know, it's going to be interesting to see what happens do I understand correctly. And maybe I don't that. He he has a pretty substantial bile does he not? He does. Yeah. Yeah. They gave him contract extension through the twenty twenty three season. And you know, it's it's a deal. It's just shy of three million dollars. And yeah, it's. It's a big contract. And I think that's something that people have to keep in mind whenever there, you know, going on a message boards between out there for stray shins is it's also a business, and you know, you're looking at a team that's right now in contention to make NCW tournament. And you know, it's a it's a situation you're coming off a year where you had one of your best rosters. If his tenure the three that you always pointed to, and you lose a gal at context and use a guy like Braxton key, some key contributors, and you're having to replace those with young guys inexperienced players, and I think that you know, Greg Byrne if things go awry, but have some decisions to make..

"And socially, and we've got a bunch of great people in our department with our coaches and our staff, and most importantly, our student athletes that are giving us that opportunity to continue to move at forty and every day, but you, you will admit. Success on the football field does make things a little more palatable. I if certainly does. And you know, one of the things that's the reality is is winnings contagious and a positive attitudes contagious. And we got a lot of that as a strength of ours right now, and let's make sure we continue to move forward. But yes, winning makes us all smarter and better looking and Paul, you know, like yourself, I need all the help. I absolutely. Yeah. You. You've been record places where changed was was change occurred, and I, it's always difficult. And and having been here before you are not at the bidding, the state these days are different than I. I know everybody talks about the way it was with coach Bryan, but there were some pretty pretty challenging gears. Well, we have. We have great history. Here is a history is any program in the country university in the country. We're also living under historical times right now and and we, we just like we talked about earlier we, we can't take that for. Ranted and just think we'll keep rolling the ball out. We'll be just fine with it. We have to continue to look and say, what is that future ahead? And that's what we've been working on with crimson standard. Greg Byrne. "Now, having said, all that a year ago today we did our show from Nashville. They were undefeated and many felt they had a shot at hanging with Alabama. They got run over the. They never looked the same of how important is this moment for them coming off that confidence builder, but still lost to take care of business tomorrow afternoon. You know, I think it's important more than anything else because coach Mason talked about this today. He hasn't opened up league play with the victory yet since he's been here at Vanderbilt and they have not gotten a victory over South Carolina. Six coach Mason has been here with the Commodores. They feel like things are different, and they refused to say that there are any moral victories. They feel like that's for a mindset of yesteryear. That's not the way they think about football in the season and their prospects for success around this Vanderbilt program anymore. Certainly they don't want that level of mentality. So it is a different animal this go around and let's be real. Notre Dame this year was not what Alabama was last year. These are entirely different experiences, but to speak to where this program is. This opportunity is big and it's big more than anything they want to open up that division play with the victory so they can set the tone for the balance of the season. When they look at what they have left over here on their SEC schedule, they need to start it off. Well, something they have not been. Able to do under Derek Mason so far. Big game tomorrow for both programs, of course, and Matt will be part of the broadcast. He Matt, thanks, appreciate your time today. We are live in Tuscaloosa where. The sun keeps beating down on some of our friends behind. And if you think the sun is beating down on them, let's go next to Lance who is up next Lance. The Greg Byrne will join us in a moment. Lance, go right ahead..

"Welcome back as we continue. Greg Byrne will join us here in a couple of minutes to talk about the hundreds of millions of dollars in reservoir in not reservations but renovations at the university of Alabama. This decision came, it's been working on for a long time, Greg and his team in nnounced it the other day, and there is put the hard hat on and way, took it off and join us, Greg, thanks so much for being with us so much going on right now with the college football season upon us, but but I do want to welcome you learn by asking about this announcement and give us some backstory as we say good afternoon. Yeah, good afternoon. Paul. Thanks for having me on. Yeah, we was exciting day for us last week. We announced their crimson standard initiative that we've been working on for the last year plus with the a lot of input from our our fan base or student athletes, or coaches or staff and put it all together and announce what our tenure vision is for Alabama athletics and the university of Alabama's. We as we put our priorities together for what the future looks like, and and there's a lot went into it and we're very pleased with where we are with it and what, but we got a lot of work ahead of us over the next ten years. Let's start with the stadium piece and then we'll get to Coleman Coliseum. If I understand correctly, I, I read watch a lot of it. Seats are coming out of Bryant, Denny stadium. Yeah, a little bit. We don't know what the net is going to be, but it is not going to be significant, but one of the things we've struggled with an actually, I think people in college football across the country and sports in general, sometimes is getting people to stadium tire game getting him to stay in the upper upper deck seats. And so what we've done is area where students are, which we, we sell out our student allotment or students give us great support, but we decided to actually kind of take different approach. One of the things we did, we toured a lot of college stadiums, even went to Lambeau Field in Green Bay. They took one of their tough areas of lambofield and created a platform deck club area. And we thought, what if we do that same thing for our student body and so our what we have planned right now is to take out part of the south upper deck, create a student terrorists will will become much more of a social area for students to watch the game, enjoy the game, and then we're going to put a new video board that will, we think have a great impact on our on our game day experience for our fans throughout the stadium and combine the two together and have it be kind of a new approach? What's been the college game previously talking to Greg Byrne. This is quite an undertaking, especially while college football is played. So how do you manage the the renovations with football season? Well, we'll have to do it. We won't be able to do it in the middle of the season phase. We, we announced three different phases phase one, we hope we can do the majority of it in one off-season. We don't know that for sure yet we're working on those details what we thought we do. I, it's kinda give the big picture of what we're looking at and and as time goes on. We'll we'll work out all those details, but phase one's going to have a heck of an impact on on our fan base. We're gonna offer some new premium seating options and some.

"Welcome to this Tuesday. A lot of conversation out there about the college football playoff, even though the season is not yet upon us, but it's getting close berry Alvarez, spent three years on the college football playoff committee. He is now off. He's back to his day job as Wisconsin else. I mean, are we gonna have anything else today? But Wisconsin, no, I wonder why Barry thinks ought to expand the sixteen might include his Wisconsin team. Barry said in an interview CBS I would be open to six two buys for the top teams. They give maybe give one spot to the group of five champion. That's actually pretty stupid idea. There are probably six teams that can win some of those schools that have years like that should have a chance that could fit in more than likely they won't. That's my words, not berries. I'm thinking more open minded to six personally. I never thought we'd want. By the way. I've always thought six was really good idea. I like six Bill Hancock does it, but maybe berry, we'll get the ball rolling. I think six gives you add it. You add two more. I don't think that's going to hurt you. Look at last year. Ohio State would have gotten in there. Of course, they've been on the outside looking in once or twice. They've been inside once or twice when they beat out Penn State. At the time, they were the big ten champion UCF they've gotten in last year. That would have been cool. Then we wouldn't have to listen to all the bellyaching and they were to come in taking a beating and shut up. Anyway, coming up on the program a lot to do David hell. He'll join us coming up here in few minutes, so we'll that Mus gonna on. Ores, you're on season hasn't begun. Chaos reigns or does it Greg Byrne a couple days ago introduced the new facility enhancement like about eighteen billion dollars? Well, not that much. We'll let Greg tell us here in a couple of minutes..

"No i think they're getting restless and i think it like anything else it at michigan ohio state if you're not beating teams at cal then the more that goes on the more restless they become i think it's crazy to say that if he doesn't do it this year that maybe it's time for him to go let's jim harbaugh was the guy if you let's rewind back four years and if you have any michigan fan for years ago hey you're going to get jim harbaugh your head coach it would have been nevada so he's exactly the guy they wanted you know how many times is a school go out and get exactly the guy that that school and that fan base malts harbaugh was that guy so i think it's it's ludicrous to say that if it doesn't happen this year that it's time to move on but no question ivan if they lose ohio state again they don't beat michigan state they don't beat some of these teams that matter he will go into that next season in the pressure cooker starts to boil over just a little bit more ivan didn't didn't woody hayes lose the michigan a couple of years in a row before he the punch sealed at all well in the lateness career in the mid seventies they had slipped a notch but i if memory serves me bo was five four and one against woody so it was it was pretty close i don't remember exactly the the the end game i just remember ohio state was not the factor nationally that they had been there were not the factor nationally at the end of what he's career i thought they lost like three times to michigan before before the punch that a helped contribute to you i mean i agree with chris and that it's it's crazy to say that it's a make or break season for harbaugh but i think it's crazier for word mean you'll come out saying we want him to be our coach forever get this it doesn't work that way anymore who can say that i guess jeans smith can say that greg byrne in alabama i can say that gene smith at ohio state but i've been so much of college football's about beating your.
