"Do have up for their own political and geopolitical benefit throughout the region right jason billion. Npr's global health and develop correspondent. Thank you very much. president elect. Joe biden is announcing his choice to lead the central intelligence agency. william burns is a former. Us ambassador to russia and jordan and he served as deputy secretary of state. During the obama administration he left government in two thousand fourteen to lead the carnegie endowment for international peace a foreign policy. Think tank. Let's bring in. Npr national security correspondent. greg. Mary hi greg hi callum. So if you confirmed. Greg burns will be the first director. In the agency's history whose wealth of experience comes primarily from the state department. So is biden signaling. Something about how views a cia rather by choosing burns as its director. Well this was certainly an interesting choice and in some ways a bit a surprise because as you noted he spent more than three decades in diplomacy not intelligence but in other ways it does fit biden's pattern for his national security team vary experience people who've worked together known each other for many years. A bill burns is not going to the cia to overhaul it. He's going there because he has gold plated washington credentials and even when we're burns retired in two thousand fourteen. He went into the think tank world so he's remained very much part of this national security and foreign policy world. And you know burns. If it's the pattern not only. Because he's worked with some of the other folks on the national security team but also because he worked with biden when biden was the vice president. So how people in washington reacting to that choice in this formation of a national security team. That is familiar to the president-elect. Yeah it's been a very positive reaction so far a burns's former colleagues at the state department as well as Former cia officials are all endorsing him as extremely capable in and while he hasn't worked at the cia. He's a very no well known quantity there. He was on the receiving end of of cia in for many years as a diplomat. Now he'll be on the producing in And we should know what a big contrast biden's choices with president. Trump who didn't have contacts in this world initially picked people. You didn't know very well. And then in the latter part of his term he's turned to two political loyalists who faced criticism for politicizing intelligence. And of course one of the things that he's known for as a diplomat is that he played an instrumental role in the negotiations that led up to the iran nuclear deal in two thousand fifteen although he left government by that point. He's been critical of president. Trump's policy toward iran. Which of course included withdrawing the us from that nuclear deal and imposing new sanctions on iranian officials. So what kind of role could burns plate and biden's plan for the iran as the director. Well as you note. He was a key negotiator back. When this deal was worked out in in two thousand fifteen joe biden was a big and would like to get back into it if iran is willing to accept the restrictions but we are five years down the road. Here you can't just turn back the clock so it will be a little bit. Tricky one idea. We're hearing is sort of a freeze for freeze the. Us will freeze it sanctions. Iran will freeze its nuclear enrichment in both sides will try to sit down figure out if there's a way they can get back to the deal. It's possible but not a given all right. That's npr national security correspondent gregory. Thanks greg my pleasure and we want to spend a few minutes now remembering neil sheehan. He's the new york times reporter. Who broke the story of the pentagon papers. The leaked documents that exposed widespread government deception about us involvement in the vietnam war. She and died last thursday at the age of eighty four. Indra cevic is president of the quincy institute for responsible. Statecraft also retired army colonel. Who fought in vietnam. He's with us now. On skype and andrew on june thirteenth nineteen seventy-one she in and the new york times started publishing their reports on the leaked pentagon papers. It was a seven thousand. Page document commissioned by the us secretary of defense robert mcnamara remind us. What are those papers. Reveal so the the anti vietnam journalists had offered a contrary narrative wanted very much was at odds with the official narrative justifying the war particularly during the lyndon johnson administration. What the pentagon papers did again commissioned by secretary of defense robert mcnamara but not revealed until mcnamara and johnson were gone and richard. Nixon was in office. What they revealed is that the government itself was aware of its conscious. Lies was aware of the fact even as the war was going on that it was a massive mistake. Another words. the pentagon papers corroborated what the work correspondence had been saying all along. It is also the case that the pentagon papers made it unmistakably clear the level of deception that the united states government had engaged in during the conduct of the war that there were secret aspects of this war bombing laos bombing cambodia for example that the government had quite intentionally kept the american people in the dark about so the pentagon papers just provided a enormous clarity to a war that had been from the very outset a project that was shrouded in deception. And she in who had covered the war in the early stages was a prominent among the journalists. Who who broke the story. In two thousand seventeen i spoke with daniel ellsberg That's the former defense analyst who first showed the papers to she in an ellsberg told me about watching the nineteen sixty seven march on the pentagon by antiwar protesters from inside the pentagon while he was working on the papers and that was sitting not far from defense secretary robert mcnamara. Let's listen for being written in an office next to mcnamara's office and it was a saturday. And i think it had been suggested that people not come in so the office that i was almost deserted and i went. Nick store to mcnamara's office and he was standing there watching from a window. And i stood at another window and look down at the arrests in the crowd. Interesting bit of history there to hear from daniel ellsberg. Did you have any sense while you were fighting. In vietnam that your own government wasn't telling you and the american people back at home the truth about the war so you know i served late in the war. Seventy two seventy one. So this is after the ted offensive of nineteen sixty eight. It was during the period when the draw down of. Us troops was in progress in other words. It was obvious that we weren't going to win this war and that therefore the sacrifices that had been made and were being made We're going to count for nothing. So the mood of the time in country among those of us who were surfing was yeah. It was gloomy. It was it was hard to make sense of what we were experiencing so the lies that engulf. This war were massive comprehensive far-reaching the week after the siege of the of the capital. Let's rightly a story. And if you go by the media reporting you would think that this is the worst thing we've ever experienced the country a have to tell you as bad as things are right now. A year like nineteen sixty eight was worse ted offensive johnson announcing he's not going to run for a second term martin luther king assassinated robert kennedy assassinated the eruption of violence in chicago at the time of the democratic national convention. Nineteen sixty eight..

Do they have the necessary things of the making to turnaround football program because when the swans sort of? Program is to do what Notre Dame good several years ago when? Last year when Brian Kelly didn't have a great year. I think he went four and eight and he fired his offensive coordinator is defensive coordinator at a special teams coordinator and hired six new coaches. And this is what led swan says, we're gonna do at USC Lynn pointed out in his letter as far as at the end of the season when he was going to keep Klay how the things that are deficiencies that USC had in their program, and we're going to correct that now I didn't necessarily agree. It you didn't either on how you need to point out the negative negative things in your program, but the positive things let's start there with the coaching staff changes. And also now who's been named to fill out the full time positions at USC. Now, we're not gonna individually say these guys can't really coach. But they Bobby Gad goat. We want to point out and compare that with what USC has done and what Notre Dame did. Well, because I think it starts again with Chris Kingsbury. He's been getting all the intention. He's the cover. Boy, he's the guys doing individual interviews. I don't think anyone else is doing the interviews. But from that standpoint, they brought in line coach Chad Kohaku haw and might jinx who coach with the cliff Kingsbury former head coach bowling green. He's gonna coach running backs chatting caged coach defense why Greg burns returned see USC to be the secondary coach he was on the two thousand three thousand four national championships staff, and then there's some rearrangement of furniture. They brought Johnny Nansen from the staff you're going to be cut. She inside backers as well as being the assistant head coach and recruiting coordinator, tearing Colbert becomes a full-time wide receiver coach Tim draft. No now. Now is the offensive line coach. After splitting time is running backs coach and mopping up as offense. Why coach John Baxter continues his role as special teams coordinator and a wall? So could you tight ends? And quite a few paragraphs remains the defensive coordinator, the only new coach on defense that s seen people may not know Joe deforest who was part of a staff that was dismissed at Kansas. He's been in the game twenty nine plus years. He worked with clay Helton Duke, and he will also after serving as defence of analysts SE this past year. He's gonna be the outside linebacker coach. So you gotta inside linebacker coach at outside linebacker coach. He's got a defensive line coach you have a secondary coach. And of course, the coordination is done by Clancy Pendergast so from. Your standpoint did they get better from defense football program coaching staff, well on the defensive side of the football. You still have the defensive coordinator, which is Clancy pantograph. So you know, exactly what his thoughts are. And what it says is and if he's going to continue with the same type of offense in the same philosophy of rotation rotation. And I think the number one thing that I want to look at is he gonna play the best football players is he gonna play the even if they're young are they gonna play the best football players on the field defensively. And then also I'm going to look at is who's going to be the voice as far as Clancy's A. Very quiet type of guy he would be able to pick him out in the lineup. But when you go to the when you go to the football field. Someone's gotta be enforcers someone's got to be the one that the defense looks to as far as the inspiration to play with the intensity that's necessary to stop the greatest football teams in the country, or at least in the Pac twelve and your non conference games aren't bad either. So I don't know who that is. I'm hoping it's I'm gonna call him coach K the defensive line coach that's coming from Boise state. He's been around the block a few times, Wisconsin, Boise Oregon state, Utah Utah state, so he's coached the Polynesians. And they do have a lot of great Polynesia's defensive lineman at USC, so candy motivate them to play up to their ability when they were recruited there. They were four and five star players, and I felt they played below their expectations. They didn't get better. So can you get these defensive lineman to play better, you're going to be the same general and Clancey paddock grass? You've got Johnny Nason who did coach the inside linebackers and Outside Linebackers last year and he is recruiting coordinator. So he'll have the two inside backers he'll understand the system. So basically he used to be a running back coach they moved into the defense. I think he has experienced there. Now, he's not an outgoing screaming yelling type of guy. So I don't. His role as far as the motivational part. And then you've got Greg burns who comes from Oregon state, and that's not really a program that had a lot of success this past year dot that. It's great recognition as far as to the defensive side of the football. It's out somebody like my Mark carrier or somebody like possibly Dwayne Walker somebody that has or is coaching at that level now to really make a splash as far as on the defensive side of the football. So that your defensive staff, you hope that they can live up and do what's necessary. But I don't think they really got to the point on the defensive side of the football. I'm hoping they have as far as to have the type of defensive performance. That's necessary. The play big time football. I hope they can up the players can get better. They did get couple of outstanding players in Jackson the outside. Linebacker will talk. About him on another show and Figueroa another outside defensive and from riverside City College. It's an outstanding player. But will they put them in a position where they can perform and come off the edge? You do the things that are necessary to play the exciting type of football you play. So I would say right now, I have to say Chuck, I have to wait and see I hate to say that and that way, but on the defensive side of the football. I've looking forward as I am to the entire spring practice. I'm looking forward to seeing exactly and watch the spring practice on the defensive side of the football in the office of side of the football to see just what they bring to it. What type of spring they're going to have on the defensive side of the football coach techniques. And what are they gonna do different? If they are going to do anything at all. You know, when you're talking about that, let's ask the question. I'm gonna put it out there. I was a being pretty strong in regard. So when I sell it should be a motivational seminars should be all in embedded situation. What do you look for early spring or late spring? And is there something they can be done with his group to have the coming out party. If you will in the spring prior to the Fresno state game to get the Trojan family back on the same page or early spring or late spring coach Chuck there's two ways of looking at that. And again, you're listening to our children football report. I'm harvey. Hi case, Chuck, there's two ways to look at that you have an early spring, and you don't really have a long off season. And you don't have a lot of time to evaluate the personnel. With your new coaches, you want you do coaches to become very familiar with the players. So they'll play for you. Plus you. Evaluate of all on date, and you have a real meeting as far as who plays best in. The schemes such is on the offensive side of the football. And the defensive side of the football. You've got to have your players on the field. You can't have your players stacked. And you can't have your players watching. Now one thing too about having a late if you have a late spring, you have time to do that you have time to evaluate your players. But you don't have as much time. If you have an injury in the spring for your players recover rehab and get ready for fall camp. But there isn't a long off season. If you go late in the spring to be able to come back and start practice, but you start fall camping August now. And one thing that US's athlete department has done is they have a schedule. I mean, they have the swim with Mike. They have these different activities. And I don't know if they're willing to move their schedules are just their schedules in the best. Interests of the football program. I would think they certainly would. I would think they would do. What's the best thing for their football program to get better right now poppy in this spring. I would have a late spring practice. I know it puts you late into recruiting in the spring, but you could recruit earlier in the spring, and I think it's very important that you put a product on the field where everybody's on the same page offense defensively as far as learning the new offensive system. The is gonna bring the offensive side of the football Chuck out poppy gopher latest spring. When I first went to UNLV as the head football coach we had a later spring. We had a lot to accomplish we had to be accustomed to the players. We had the evaluate the players the new enroll players that came in and the fall or the spring we had to get them implemented into our program. Get them caught up because when players today come into the program, they want to know that they can play they can play. Now, they might be big. But they're not. Ready to play mature, y so you have to let them hang around and be around the players for awhile to feel comfortable and don't be afraid to challenge. Someone else if he's playing your position, but we gotta take a break on this. Chuck, I wanna welcome everyone out there. I want to say happy holidays, everyone stay with us here. This Trojan football report brought to us by the south point hotel casino in Las Vegas, Nevada with you year. Our Trojan football report tonight nine to ten next week nine to ten and then we'll make a quick change. As far as time cutting back to a half an hour during the offseason really their off season in anything anymore. Whether you're in whatever business you're in football.

"Really, well, but some good results to close on you had the Rosebowl you had winning the Pac twelve this year, you, you know, five and seven not as much. Plus you're talking about a coaching staff. There was a lot of rumors hotseat things like that. Now US's still there number four in the Pac twelve I think it can move up Oregon's done the best in the Pac twelve they've done. A really good job. One of the two schools did mobile went to Stanford's number three right now. But cow's number six, so both your school is doing. Okay, but and the top half, but USC I think has a good chance to to move up a little bit. But it's just I think it's early signing periods. Just kind of getting a lot of bodies. And they'll try to add some of the more high quality guys in February's just judging from this conversation when I'm looking at it doesn't sound like we have a single five star guy right now. Right. Not right now. But there's a couple that are, you know, USC leans like brew McCoy from monitor high school. I think you'll bring him in and for it. I like a lot. He's one of the top receivers. I've seen out there. It's not been a great year for some of the positions of need that USC has no crystal from Saint John Bosco is a four star corner. It'd be a great guy. He was already committed to USC. They didn't have a defensive back coach until his past week. Now they hired Greg burns. He'll we'll find out about him later on. But hope for you USC fan, you hope he can sign they get a few of those guys. I think that really fills out the class. Well, if you miss on some of those then, you know, you might be getting some plan B or plan C guys. This is USC. We're talking about here mean is that is that carrying any of the same Leicester's as as it did before. I mean, this is this is the children's if you're from Los Angeles. Yeah. No. I think it still does really. I mean, you're talking about it's a a story program. They didn't lose any really commits from or hardly any from what you know, what all the turmoil and stuff was going on. I think those are people that they didn't care who the coaches we're going to be if their position coach got fired they wanted to come to USC. So I think you're still going to see a good class. It's just not historically US's is always like averaged a four star recruit. And I think it's really hard to kind of keep up this been this year kind of like a perfect storm of maybe it's not gonna be as good now. There's gonna be a lot of guys that are quality players that maybe not the five star premier guy that everybody wanted that you're used to though, it's going to be up to the coaches to take these guys in developed, and that's know, that's where a lot of criticism has been you've you've taken these highly ranked guys what have you made out of them. I think the coaches have their work cut out for them. Now, you're gonna have to take some of these guys that maybe not everybody wanted you. You you evaluated. You thought they were good. Now, you gotta bring him in and make them work in your system. The fan base. You know, obviously a lot of fans wanted clay Helton to exit as head coach at USC. He was retained by Lynch swan. But they do bring in cliff Kingsbury who was much sought after by at both the collegiate in the pro level. Is that what what's the mood of the fan base where when you take the temperature of the average Trojan fan how does it sound right now? What are you feeling a little better? I think after the hiring of Kingsbury they're getting a little worried when you know, there was when I was on your show. And there was other reports saying, hey, he's not gonna sign, you know, obviously, he ended up signing. I think that's helped they needed that step in the right direction. And I think when spring football rolls around you'll see if you see a fun offense out there if they open up taxes or the spring game and all that stuff. I think fans will get a little more excited, but it's hard..

"Of course, here to Greg burns as we get ready for the iron bowl you've been involved in some big robberies. You were the director at Mississippi State. And we that robbery seems to go to a different level every year. I don't know if it's the right direction. You certainly been you went to Arizona state. You were at Arizona. That's a pretty heated rivalry. But. This probably to me. And I want your thoughts. It seems like while the the bitterness is still ingrained in history. Maybe it's not quite as personalized as it used to be is that is that a fair analysis. Well, I I'm not sure I think one of the great things about college sports is the rivalry in having fun with that having that be a focus of what you're doing as a program to beach arrival on on an annual basis, obviously on the grid. Iron is really important. You want to do it across the board and all your sports that you compete in. I think what what Alabama and Auburn represent is is a great rivalry within college athletics. And certainly one of the best ones out there, and whatever we can do to celebrate that to bring people together we want to do it in the right manner though with class and dignity as we approach it. But at the same time too, it's important. And and I think it was no, absolutely. And. And so anything we can do to to highlight that in the right way, we want to make sure we're I guess where I'm going here is it Nick Sabin. I think you could say the same thing about the Auburn people. They maybe because of certain instances that have occurred. It seems like he has tried to keep all robberies at a at a higher level than than maybe we see it other places. Yeah. I mean, he talked about it publicly, and I know with the team that saying this if you're from Alabama this this means a ton. And it's it's really important that we do everything we can this week in preparation for it to put our program and the best possible as you go through that process in preparation to make sure that we are prepared.

"We've got some very intriguing college football games tomorrow. So we decided to bring in someone who actually knows what he's talking about our good friend from college game day, Mr David Pollack. Let's start with this. You're in Jacksonville looks beautiful for the the biggest game this weekend. Number nine, Florida. Number seven, Georgia Georgia has had two weeks to ponder its lost to LSU. How vulnerable are they to Florida? Well, Florida's a really good football team. So obviously, they're going to be vulnerable. And I think when you look at this offense they've kind of forgotten a little bit of who they are last year. Georgia was a football team. They made no bones about what they were going to do. It was going to be Nick and Sony Michelle and a physical offense of line, and they're gonna run the football and they're gonna hide their freshman quarterback Jake from well, I think you fall in love now because you got Meco hard winning Godwin and Ridley and all these toys out why they think they've they showed in the LSU get and they want to throw the football. And you want to use these toys? Well, I think they're going to get back to what they do best. And what they do. Best is run the football Holyfield and swift or two guys that same type of guys as Michelle and shove their physical. The office of line is still physical nasty Florida when you look at their weaknesses over the past several weeks of the season six -ceptable to the run they're smaller in the interior on the defensive line. So I think Georgia's fixing their by week is running the football more effectively. And I think you'll see freshman quarterback. Justin fields get more playing time because he can do the same thing. He can come in and run. The football factory. And especially this own read and Jake from coming off probably he's worst game of his career, David. There's a pretty big game in the ACC is well number two Clinton at Florida state. The Seminoles were dreadful starting to season. What if anything has changed for them? They've definitely got back together and kudos coach Taggart because people were talking in the beginning season. Like, oh my gosh. We should bury this team in. We should fire Willie Taggart. Well, not so fast. They they've gone faster. They've started to simplify things I think the offense of line is played a little bit better. But defensively guys like Greg burns have been just nuisance planet other people's backfield's. And he's got to watch number ninety nine when you watch this game gets clumps. It'll be the best defensive player they've seen. He's quick. They get tackles for loss getting more production from that side of the football. They spanked weight force last week. That's not anything that's reporting to that's gonna make this great game. But man, y'all remember this was the game. I mean, Clemson FSU in the ACC every year with JIMBO and Daboh and Jameson this Sean this was the game that we always look for to not as much hype this season, but Clemson and Trevor Lawrence that offense is dadgum homage to go along with the defense playing. Well, now Trevor Lawrence going on the road is a freshman quarterback. Does he make a few? Steaks with that fast, physical defense and make this game close..
