"We're going back to our normal 433. But there's gonna be some personnel changes. We talked about what we needed from our top line group and what we needed from our back line. We need to push up much quicker, Convince the field give our midfielders smaller space to be able to win balls. We wanted to be more aggressive, high, pressing them and we thought that would lead to some turnovers. This is after hours with Amy Lawrence U. S Men's national team manager Greg Burke Halter, maybe some desperate moves that have time of the Honduras U S game, the World Cup qualifying match that was tied at one. In fact, even going through the second half, it appeared as though he was grasping for anything that might spark his offense. But lo and behold, it worked four goals later, the U. S has its first win in World Cup qualifying, which Makes a huge difference those four goals they matter for goal differential, and now it all looks and feels completely different. At least it does to me. It's after hours with Amy Lawrence on CBS Sports Radio, I was ready to jump off a ledge or completely banned this team from my, um, my my show altogether in case it was going to be a repeat of several years ago when they missed the World Cup. Just a couple of quick minutes with Roger Gonzalez of CBS Sports in the wake of that win against Honduras wanted to ask his opinion what he saw, so I started out by asking him what changed in that second half. Well, I think it all came down to the manager Greg Burke. Halter actually making changes this time around. You know, the first two games against Al Salvador in Canada were or so underwhelming. I mean, I just did. Nothing right. Really, to results that they were very unhappy with him. You know, it started again in this in this game. The first half was was very poor. You know, they were down one male and needing to respond, and so When he waited for the 80th minute to make changes against Canada. He made it a half time here, and they paid off. You know, he He brought in DeAndre Yedlin bread in Anson Anthony Robinson. They're all involved in goals. National jets portable. I mean, it was kind of wild. How all of the changes he made press the right buttons and help them get the victory. And then you know, starting an 18 year old striker and Ricardo Puppy who you know, delivered big time with a goal and an assist. You know it gets the US back on track now for qualifying, but there's still a lot of work that needs to be done. Do you think he has a strategy with some of these changes in some of these younger guys? Or do you think this is just about trying to light a fire under the offense? Yeah. I mean, I think it was more about lighting a fire because I think he got it wrong. He changed his formation at halftime. It didn't work. And so you know the initial plan the game plan that he had It wasn't working. But He deserves credit, you know, for being able to adapt and trying to figure out something, and you know it was far from, you know, amazing performance, but they had a good half an hour in the second half that that really Well, uh, reinvigorated this fan base in and so confidence in this team, you know, he's he? It's a big job that you're always going to be criticized. And And you know, it always hasn't been that great, but Will say, you know, being without so many key players and even Christian pools that got injured in the second half and had to come off. You know, this could be a turning point of this team if they can continue building and And you know, produced similar performances on a consistent basis. United States finally gets a win in World Cup qualifying over Honduras with four goals in the second half, and we're spending a few minutes with Roger Gonzalez of CBS Sports right in the wake of what is their first win as they attempt to not miss the World Cup for the second consecutive round. It's after hours with Amy Lawrence here on CBS Sports Radio You mentioned Christian. He missed that first game. He'd been in Covid protocols..

"In stereo. Oh, 1 to 1, United States and Honduras. Everybody's sweating profusely. Will this result? Hold up now? Suddenly off the United States gets out with a tie. We're excited. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. But United States Honduras, 11. In the final leg this week of World Cup qualifying for the United States. Playing a little bit more jump a little bit more want to here in the second half, maybe Gregg Berhalter when, at halftime and said, Guys, they're firing me, man. If if you don't play better in the second half, you know what that means. What does that mean? Coach? I'm not going to bring doughnuts to practice anymore. There's gonna be no fun Fridays. All of that's gone. We're not going to go to raging waters for our big trip next week. All that's gone because a new guy is going to come in here and there's gonna be other stuff going on. Besides the fund that we do And now they are out playing like their hair is on fire. Playing for Greg Burke halters job they want to go to raging waters. Actually done? Yeah, all of a sudden inspired offensive play a couple shots on goal corner kick coming up here in the 71st minute. So a bit of excitement to breakdowns defensively, one thing that has been consistent Is that Honduras has been able to beat the hell out of politic, uh, with not a call, not a warning, not not a pause to the game whatsoever. So there's always just that level of nervousness of All right. You know, you're not getting a tonic calls in the process and these types of games, right? But there's been no, uh, Tamping down at all. And quite clearly, no retaliation thus far from the U. S. You know, it's like the enforcers that used to have for your hockey team. You know the the Hawks and a guy like Bob Probert or something, helping to make sure things stayed right Right now, You've got a lot of free runs on ballistic, so every time he touches the ball, it's becoming all right. Get it off your foot because you're about to get hit. Well, that's kind of what that's kind of what the the book is on politic is that he's so good. You have to be physical with him. He's still not as big as some other players. Let's see how he does when you're really, really physical, and that's kind of you know, out of the playbook for how you deal with the player that talented and he says he's got to find a way through it. He's got to find a way to be able to say Okay, when they are playing me that physical I have to find a way to make them pay. And so that's kind of where we're at right now. Hopefully again, there's still some time left here about 20 minutes, and then whatever injury time is left after this for the United States to get another goal, and then you get three points and suddenly we're out of this part of the qualifying with five points of things are okay. Any things are okay. Or if not, we're at three points. That's uh, we need a new head coach. So either I'm the new head coaching now or not. Yeah, well, either on the new head coach, or I'm not. So I mean, I don't know. It depends on how the next 25 minutes go. If I'm the going to be the head coach or not, You just randomly show up yelling. I'm the captain. Now, uh Hey, guys. Glad you're here. Listen, I'm the new head coach. And if you know me, Jason Smith, Fox Sports Radio. How you doing? Great. Okay, Here's we're going to do. Okay. So now no more doughnuts. Okay, Doughnut. Friday is out. Stop! Stop, Pulisic, stop. No more. Donuts are bad for you, man. We're going to run laps instead. All right, So let's start running. I'm gonna blow the whistle. Well, we already established that you're the one that gets to eat all the cheap meals. That's right. Yes, I eat all the cheap meals and the players have to eat the regular meals. Because look when you're coaching what you want that works. Got to clean it up. Yep, That's right now as well, keep you posted on this game, obviously still 11, United States and Honduras into the 74th minute. Now the NFL season kicks off tomorrow. Happy NFL leave. We made it. We all made it to the NFL season. We're incredibly happy that we get a big game less than 24 hours from now. And look, you can do a lot worse than the Bucks and the Cowboys opening night. It's going to break records, right? It's going to more people are going to watch this game. They're going to watch the last three Super Bowls combined. You're gonna see it. It's going to be an incredible You're going to see all 300 million people watched the Bucks in the Cowboys. It's that kind of every person in America. Every single every television all 300 million television sets in America are going to be to not like it was government mandated. What are you doing there? Hey, you know what? Why not? Hey, you have to watch the game tomorrow night. They could do worse things than that. Right? You must celebrate Tom Brady. That's the thing to unify us all. No, We're not going to tell you who to root for, but we'll just You just have to watch the game. I was just trying to talk about an American example of resilience, consistency and domination. Things that define America. Where's my music? The Cowboys are almost all of those things. They're resilient. They have a lot of injuries every year. They have a big brand. They're consistent there like in their ate and ate every year. They're just not dominant, but they're two out of those three whole, said 881 going there. Two of those three things, But look, No. Tomorrow is a huge, huge game. It's going to be so much fun. It's going to the NFL back to normal. It's going to be a big crowd. Look, you saw the excitement. What it was like this weekend, seeing full stadiums in college football. It was an incredible sight it you know it felt great, and that's what was trending all over right. People didn't care about the games. I don't watch the games. No one cared about the games They cared about. Understand, man, you know, for North Carolina, Virginia Tech. They cared about Wisconsin and they care like they cared about jump around being played and can't Randall all of these things. That's what it was all about and tomorrow. Hey, we're getting back to the NFL. We made it and it's going to look like the The NFL has looked like for years. Now. As part of this, there's everybody who was saying it's just going to be a walkover by Tampa Bay and look Yeah, I see it because Tampa Bay has no issues right now they're the defending champs. They have no cases of covid to worry about their 100% vaccinated. They brought back every one of their starters, every one of the players they wanted to bring back they brought back for this year. Meanwhile, here's the Cowboys, this ragtag group of guys showing up Listen, if the if the bucks of the the guy showing up at the party and they're in the tuxedo, and they have the the cummerbund that matches the boot near and they have the president and their their hair is combed, nice and slick back, and they're all cool. Well in the Cowboys, the one showing up at the party, the T shirt and sweatpants and flip flops going I can still get in right, You guys have food. That's us. I mean, that's the Dallas Cowboys. They have all kinds of covid issues. They get all kinds of injury issues back. Prescott is coming back to play hasn't played all preseason. He's coming back from a from a back injury coming back from the footage. They really have a lot of issues, but This is not a game where the Cowboys have no chance to win, right. This is not that game. I'll give you a couple of scenarios in which the Cowboys can win this game tomorrow night against against Tampa, and it's not far fetched. Right. It's week one. No matter what happens, no matter what kind of team you are in the preseason week, one football is ugly, right? It doesn't get uglier than the third than the Thursday night game right week. One is always ugly, and that's the way it is now, with teams not playing their starters at all in the preseason, So even though hey, the Bucks have been together and they won the Super Bowl a couple months ago,.

"The Greg Burke Halter has been building with the United States' men's national team and how that really came to fruition during the Gold Cup. Right. I think the the the nation's league when felt bigger in the moment, because it was the it was, it was all the start players right. It's the it's the guys who will be on the field in a key game against Mexico. Oh, when they play in qualifying like those were the guys, you know, we're gonna kind of take them to the next level, so that was really important. Um, that was really the first time since the last qualifying cycle where a game felt like it really mattered, right? I mean, the Honduras in the semifinals. I guess you could make the case of that mattered as well, Just to get to the final, But you know that the state you know Mexico really cool atmosphere. High stakes that one that one felt like you're playing for keeps. But in the case you can make for the Gold Cup right is that Mexico had quite a few starters on the field in the in the Gold Cup final. I think I want to say it was seven of the 11 stars from the From the nation's league final. We're still on the field from Mexico in that Gold Cup final, and you know the fact that the U. S had a roster that didn't include most of its star players and still was able to get the result. Um, maybe that maybe that's even more important right? Because it speaks to the depth that the program has right now, which is so so important in this qualifying cycle was in the past, right. You had when qualifying windows where there was two games in 10 days or whatever. It was 22 games. I don't know how many days I think it's 10. Now you have three games in 10 days and so with with that compact schedule the United States plays Thursday against at El Salvador travels back to Nashville plays at Canada on Sunday. Then heads back to Honduras to play them on Wednesday, So you're gonna have to rotate the team, right? You can't have. You can't just put your your best 11 out there and start him back to back. Um and and call it good, right? It's just not going to work with the club obligations and the like the Travel just to get here at the at the start of this of this window, right? There's a there's a whole lot that goes into it. So the fact that they have 2025 guys on this roster now the Tim ways out due to injury. We're going to have a chance to see a lot of these guys contribute meaning for walls and because the United States is so deep Um, it's really a big advantage compared to some of these other countries like El Salvador and Honduras that don't have, um, like the depth in their pool. Right. So I'm really curious to see You know what the United States is? Rotation is like but also how the other team's approach games against United States, right? Because if you know you have to play three games in 10 days You put all your eggs in the basket against the United States known that that that's probably, um, a tougher opportunity to get points or do you play your best players in the two other games and giving yourself a better chance to maximize the points you can get in the window. It's really fascinating to see what's going to happen. You've been listening to halftime coverage brought to you by your North Cal Honda dealers. "Oh greg burke why don't you come up with me because he's the biggest commissioner big twelve coordinator officials greg burks. This was last week so that if an opposing player does Horns down to a texas player. That would probably be a penalty but doing horns down towards your fans probably won't be a penalty although he left. Open the possibility that could be okay. Let's move all time. Here's the thing much. Like i am not gonna shit on texas for this. I'm going to shed on the big twelve much like when when something happens and you just get all kinds kinds of hail from texas fans. Even you have nothing to do with it. I feel like texas had nothing to do with this false tom. Herman says some things about. Don't do horns down all that shit but they show up immediately as right on texas doesn't bring this up and they're talking to the head of officials and he's like a horns down. It'll be opponent if you do it right at somebody. It is the softest thing in the world that idea that players can't take horns down in their face it is very very soft and i've always said it's just like we've gotten penalized for doing it before after we sack him. If one team can do that hand signal then they can take it. Done back at them to stop them. I'm sorry that just came. One team should be able to anyway. I don't think it's texas though it's not text. It's the big twelve who will do anything in the world to slob on the knob. Of the longhorns. That's not texas his fault. That's texas in texas runs at conference. They run they run iowa state they run oklahoma. They run they run. Everybody in oklahoma fangio sitting here is i know in texas. Run it no you. Don't texas runs that conference. Texas runs the conference and decisions at this level are made in the name of texas texas fault. They are the the money the big money. And that's why it's hard sometimes to take texas seriously because they are a big fish in a plan where like that fish is taking care of. Its fed it's it's hot. it's coddled. Yeah nobody's fishing. They have no danger there. So they're absolutely they're they're. They're like a ten pound bass on a koi pond. they're just absolutely protected and texas fans. Don't see it but you are and the rational texas fans do see it. I really do now again. I twitter phantom is never rational. No chance i even had some texas fan saying like as a fan of this school as a long worn i. These people are being super soft. Because i do feel like the idea of being able to do horns down is like a rite of passage for anybody just like doing anything else. And if that offends you then you're just a soft person like now i. I will say the horns like the long horns hand signal is the probably the coolest one in sports here that texas fans. I'm giving you a compliment giving you a compliment. This is probably the coolest one i will. I i know texas tech has the the guns up. Atm's gig him. It's not as cool looking but if anybody did a thumbs down in my face. I could not be less offended. Who gives shit. It's a thumbs down. It's not like they gave you the middle finger so it's like why would you care if your hand signals upside down if you do a hand signal it's going to be back in your face. The like the the you is another good. How many times has an opposing chatter out. Gift of him during the youtube is dick. How many player against florida score touchdown and then mockingly did i. Don't i don't understand that like as as a football fan. That's the kind of should that you live four to have that moment. If i was a player. Willing florida. And i sacked tim tebow. You better bet on fucking chomping and his horns up. I think that this like when everybody in the stadium is like as my brushing as anybody in the stadiums like this. I think that looks really cool. It's the in sink thing that i don't like you know like everybody was sync. I like backstreet. Boys better yes i do. I've always liked the backstreet boys better with you. The new girlfriend maybe. John's but see here's the thing. If everybody was in sync doing that i would feel differently. What is all we're going to get kicked off a youtube but everybody if you look at like a game and everybody's doing the horns up backstreet more than sink justin timberlake. Well old guy first of all they were all like the same age. Second wife. i've talking. About how gestation individual people then yes obviously. Jt is higher. but as a band. When i was younger also. I'm ten years younger than the by double the streams of in sync all right. I don't care this stupid people out there in the world. I mean just by simple numbers. They have double the streams of in sync because justin timberlake was all instinct. Jc shahzad was a delight. Well i mean just for tone. Just let me listen. I love justin timberlake. I am not knocking him. But as a as a young preteen girl i loved. Nick carter and i love the backstreet. Boys i listen. Can i give you this. This is where we're going to not at the time. This is where. I'll meet you in the middle guy. Justin timberlake by far the most talented of all boy bands of all time. He was when it comes to boy bands as a whole all of them backstreet. Boys was better..

"The guy Greg Burkes, the director of officials quote. I hope in the future that somebody else's symbols will come into play and not just the horns, and it never will. The thing where Texas you're not all right, and there's no there's no the symbol that matches that in the entire country. 51283605 90 in southwest Austin. It's run on K. L B. J What's up, Ron? Gentlemen, I am so glad to talk to you today. I'm excited for the first time. About foot UT football and I'll answer your make a comment about the horns down thing. But for the for the first time, I feel great because at the end of our last game I saw hope with three potential quarterbacks made me very upset that Herman had been letting those young men sit on the bench when we had all that talent. And we're in a crypt. Christmas Sim situation pulling ER linger out time after time after time after time. I feel absolutely fabulous about this next season and to make a comment about the horns down. That is absolutely a rite of passage. How many other teams in the conference have a hand sign that they can show to support their team? I look at it. And as Universoul. Advertising for one of the greatest teams in this country. I love you, t and I love everything about an ice. I say horns down. Yeah, Hell, yeah. Every time you think you're doing something to take away from our team, you're just giving us back some more. What starts here Changes the world, right? Ryan? Hell, yeah. Yeah. Oh, my God. Now most most of the teams do have I mean the text, tech got a gun? You got a gun? Do Baylor. John Boehner, Scott. Right. But his point is Ron. Nobody puts those down because nobody cares about those guys Everybody cares about and you know they they hate us because they ain't us. Oh, it's you know, it's not being obsessed with this. Yeah, It's funny that the sign now for Oklahoma is the horns down. You're right. Will be playing disco tech of the Horns down was Ron advocating that they should have bench sama linger in favor of manned A C. Thompson. There was Hudson card. There are some moments in that season if they would have admitted how injured he really was. Maybe we should have played somebody else. I don't know. Sark addressed the quarterback situation today. The former s and you talk about him again, Did we? Yeah. He works for Dick Anderson. H b. I great, great commercial real estate elaboration. I gotta No, no, Just just get around. I can make it happen for you. Uh, really? I've heard that one before. All right, I'm gonna I'm getting on that Montana golf course we're gonna get edge. Edgewood Edge, Mo. Yeah, all right, um, degree wedge any day now, Sarkeesian says Texas can is capable of being competitive at a high level right now. The Vegas over under, say, eight wins again. That feels disrespectful to me that feels low and disrespectful, but eight Eight and four regular season next year. Is that competing at a high level I'm a I'm gonna say that would be a disappointment for me. I would agree with you. It would be a disappointment. I think 839 and two Well, 99 and three he had to that It's doing the old Southwest Conference schedule. 11 games in Kansas turns chicken again, but no, I think four losses would be disappointment. Yeah. I didn't even know that I love nine and three. Give me some of that 10 and two action, man. Alright, Look, man, I'm not trying to. I got to see a game. Let's see what I mean. I'm not there yet. Jason. Be like because that's that entitlement, Right? Like yeah, Coach four or five stars. 10 wins. It should be an automatic 10 wins. Well, yes, yes, it should be. Listen, Let's just stop the cycle, dude, that I was just going to say I'm part of the problem. Okay? And then we all are right. We all are. We longhorn fans here. But are we wrong with all of the resources and the money? No, You're not players. I'm right now. You literally show me first. Don't want to be 12 and no before I would, Yeah, I'm not ready to predict a 10 and two season, but I'm saying that that should be the basement of our standard. That's our baseline standard as we we should begin to be great to see that every year. Big 12 media days again going on Just up the road. Arlington, Right? They're doing it in Jerry World. Jerry World. Greg Berks is the big 12, coordinator of officials says that they're cracking down on taunting. This year. It will be a point of emphasis for referees in the league and specifically addressed the horns down symbol, goddammit quote so stupid If you do a horns down to a Texas player as an opponent, that's probably going to be a foul. Probably. He says that if you if the player you know, does it to the crowd turns to the crowd and does the horns down. It probably would not be a penalty, Probably Uh, quote. Quote, please. All of you note, I said probably. We have to consider intent and consider the situation will leave it to the officials end quote, which is just a great way to make rules, particularly when ruling games 15 yard penalties. Personal foul is significant penalty. Let's just definitely create a huge vast grey area. Yeah, we have to consider intent and whatever. Look, I want to buy and I can tell by your discussed veto. We don't care about this. Longhorn fans don't care. I don't think the players do either. Jason. Now we bring it up when I see it in the middle of games. I'm like that jackass. More like when Baker Mayfield is still to this day as a professional for the Cleveland Browns, following down the horns down, But I would I just want to be on record and I'm not. I'm not speaking for the two of you. Who effing cares. Players should not be penalized for this. I get where they're coming from as a taunting thing. It's almost like you're throwing the middle finger or something, I guess, but but at the same point, they shouldn't be penalized. If they do it to the crowd. I don't believe in a pedal. I think I would hope that our players are better and bigger than that. To have a hand gesture affect them In such a way. I've also never in my Longhorn fandom went like this during a game when we used to play in the baggies and put the thumbs down Texas Tech do that, or, you know, put the guns down, or I've never wasted time on that. And to me, it's just another example. How we live in the heads rent free, and when I see other players do it, The best revenge is for a Texas victory. Let's just get back to winning and making those players that do it against us look like dumb asses. You know, you're exactly right if we use it as a as a celebratory, and if they want to do downward, that shouldn't be a penalty. That should not be a penalty at all. You know what's good? It's good. It's good. It's bad and bad. And you're exactly right. If somebody does that, Baker make feel walked in the shared right now a decade. Come here, right. I say You're my favorite. "You got me thinking with the mantle comment. I know it's very different when the Mets opened up city field. They played the Red Sox. Do you? Do you know who hit the first home run in city field history from a major league player? I just throw it out there. I don't really know. I'll say t's, well, it's not the guy plays for the Mets. He did it for the Red Sox. And he now plays for the Mets. Did it for the Red Sox now plays for the Mets? But he won't be ready on opening day because he's already heard. Oh, okay. Lower yari. How about that? Do you remember with it because I'm sure you were at the Yankee game. Do you hit the first home run in that game? Because I have no idea. I Bill I kinda wanna see Mark to Sierra. But I don't remember who hit it on the thing. I remember is that after the fact they were saying because they had not taking batting practice in that ballpark or anything yet until the day of that game. And after the first ten minutes of batting practice. The players and coaches were all raving about how the ball flies out to right center. Right. And right, basically from from the auxiliary scoreboard to the right field foul line. There was a Jetstream happening. And they knew it after ten minutes. I got the answer is this Friday, April third two thousand nine cubs did not hit a home run in that game. The first home run was hit by Robinson. So to Mets at home runs the stadiums. Now. Some degree. Yes. Some degree Matsui. Also, hit a home run in the immortal. Cody ransom that whole grains. Yeah. Opening day third baseman for the two thousand nine world to answer. Right. That's right. What's the injury status right now? We'll start with Aaron Hicks because he feels like he's the closest what's the status of Hicks right now. He's not really doing anything baseball related yet. So talking about feeling better and getting back out there. But it would seem like that. I mean, they and they said a couple of days ago that shooting for April fourth I as eligible even seems a little little too too gung-ho right now. So I mean, I I it sounds like at least the first ten games without him. And maybe a little bit more depending on how quickly you can get himself going again. How many give me now? I'm sure you must have this now or an idea that the opening day lineup. You got that right now. I know I didn't I haven't even thought about the the lineup yet. So much is put into the roster, and I hadn't really sat down to think about what the lineup is going to be like, but I think I think the roster situation is interesting simply because the idea that six weeks ago, we said it's either void or bird, right? Right. They both played well and the Hicks injury. You gave the Yankees out. So they didn't have to make choices. Right, right. They can carry them both in the short term. And it's still short term as far as anyone can tell they're eventually going to have to make the decision here. I think they left themselves a little wiggle room with fish outfielder that they traded for from Colorado. My talk men they sent out Tyler way. So they're comfortable with you being their backup and all the infield positions. Doubt when Hicks because they have a true outfielder on this roster that they might not have a need for. Let's say Hicks comes back, and they sent talk out then they start both per station. But Erin Bhutan hit at the fact that when they get healthier Tyler wake and find himself back here. They just needed a true outfielder. And so that leads me to believe that X comes back talk goes down. But then Wade comes up to replace one. And that's all Suming. Nobody else gets her between a couple of land. Let's get to Tyler Wade. And I can't say that he shouldn't be disappointed. He should be disappointed. He had another good spring training. Despite the fact that every time he's in the major leagues he gets about one forty five. He did everything that Aaron Boone asking him to do and thought he made the team. So I get him being disappointed. I don't get him being angry like the Yankees did something wrong Tyler you're a one fifty career hitter. The Yankees couldn't blindly say and to your point we can trust him to be the only other outfielder. Besides the starters on this roster. They went out and got another left handed bat and talk men from Colorado who appears to be a quadruple a player. That's the way it looks by the way time await feels the same way to guy that puts a big numbers at triple A hasn't done in the majors. We'll see. So I get it being disappointed Sweeny. But how could he be mad every time? The guy's been in the major leagues he gets one forty five and he's not a true outfielder. Yeah. Well, a few things here. They're they're different players Tyler. Still twenty three twenty four his prospect status is different than twenty eight year old sure. The. And it's still I mean, he his playing time the big league level was not long enough consistent enough to say, well, he's never gonna hit in the big leagues. And again, his age and sporadic play. Once he got here factors Sweden. But here's the thing about Tyler wait on this team. That's going to be his role. He's never going to be an everyday player. So he can't hit in that limited role. Then he's useless. But then you know, that takes time to get used to he probably hasn't yet. So as far as his being angry they made the trade today for the roster was set. It's not like he had this. Had this. I had that he was competing against a certain group of players. He had a really good spring. He played the outfield. Didn't look overmatched. He played center field in a game with Brett Gardner playing. What's the old in the last few days? So they can give them more time in center field at some point. And I can't say they made a wrong decision. I think the accuracy decided they needed just a little more solid outfield play or or more experienced outfielder given the Sixers taking longer to come back then the first few games of the season. So I think that's what played into it. Wait. I mean, listen wages got hit over the head. Because he thought he had made the team because he did everything. Right. So I mean, I think he's angry that had happened. I don't think he's harboring this great. Set of emotions against all the people on saying he got screwed. I you know, he he's a young kid trying to make a team again. And he thought he had made it, and then they told them just what you did. So when you get the impression that I understand both the first basement erupted at this point. But I get the impression of bird is the guy they really want to be the first baseman. When all is said and done. I I don't know what they have a choice on yelp. But they. They have long believed in Greg bird's ability when healthy, and I think they felt even at the end of last season. He really wasn't hundred percent again. And the way he talked about his swing about how he really couldn't plant that. Right foot comfortably. Lead you to believe that it just it really wasn't one hundred percent. And if you watch them play this spring, you could see that there is there's a little bit of a comfort level even late last season. I remember talking about it because there are a lot of I there was a week where he also the warning track. And I asked him I asked him about feeling that power and a swing even batting practice. He said it wasn't there. So I think this spring he he went about it saying just wants to go out there and play healthy. And he accomplished that now. Again, the Yankees could have. Compete with him. They could've non tendered them. They could've traded him. They could have just said listen book guy, but that would be shortsighted because look as only accomplished less than two months worth at the big league level same as what Greg Burke when he came up first time in two thousand fifteen so they kept their depths. They kept their belief in bird who they have known for a long time and said, okay, if he can get healthy again, he has ability. It'd be a lot better player than what we saw the last two years so on opening day because the Yankees are going to be facing. A righty. It's Andrew Kashmir. Who's now the opening day starter for the Orioles on opening day? Do they give that not to Luke? Void. I think he deserves it. I know the righty righty thing. But look if you're going to base things on the up thing Craig perks gonna play most of the time because obviously most starting pitchers right handed to me. I think Luke voids the first baseman. It's crazy to say he's the cleanup hitter on opening day. Well, I think they've left the, you know, they're left Robin to make a decision. Because of the D H spot. And the fact that Hicks is down. You haven't outfield it's going to be Gardner judges Stanton. So you have the ability to to play do you think both of them are in the lineup as opposed to? Let's say DJ playing and maybe something of that sort. Yeah. I don't I don't think I don't think he'd go that way. I think you're starting to move. You're going to have to start moving around and get him some bats. And you'll see as the and you get to the day games at night games and the three four roll kind of saying, I think you'll see those things come into play. But I don't think there's any need to do anything other than play them. Both. Okay. I'll tell you something if both of those guys hit, and I've mentioned this at the beginning spring training. I could see how this could work long term because Brett Gardner is a guy that they want to give a lot of off days to MB. We got to see if he could recover at least offensively from what happened last year. He did not have a very good year. I know he gives you a lot along at bats left handed bat. But if let's say Voight and Berta both hitting maybe this stays the way it is. It could happen. You hit your way to the lineups. We as the way awards. Well, again, things change when Hicks comes back and. Right. Well, but he's not to the bench because they value is defense. They value is bats. And I think they believe that the last two months of the season where he really took a nosedive was just as a result of having to run them out there because the injuries to judge and Stanton forced their hands and giving giving them more playing time than they actually wanted to over the final two months of the season, they recite gardener because as one of the things we talked about this team doesn't have a lot of plus defensive players and Gardner is one of them. And there is great value in that, you know, you'd Cashman talk about run prevention. Well, he doesn't have a lot of great defenders around the diamond history. Best defenders two of them are starting your injured Hicks gregorious and Gardner. Those are three best defenders. So Brett Gardner is going to play. I think what they're trying to do is kind of rationalist playing a little bit. So it doesn't get worn down. In the second half of the season. That was the plan last year. It just didn't work because of the injuries. Let's go back to the opening day. Like give me you a speculate on what you see opening. I I mean, I think you're gonna run I don't have thought about the lineup to be honest with you are only two days, just a gardener gardener leads often. Because. Who's playing where you don't have to give me your lineup. You to think that's pretty pretty evident Sanchez behind the plate. Right. All our Lewinsky tourism, and let's say void around the infield with Bert. DA ching. Gardner standing left and judging right, okay. I would think I would think you're gonna go Gardner leading off and then judge bang too. Right. Three. If you wanna go void Sanchez. I could see that you're going to have the ability to put tours and do heart to guys who raked in the bottom half of the batting, very deeply. The lineup is stellar. We knows no doubt about that Asher with the makeup of this roster. Now, we know CC's going to start the year on the active roster. So you could serve the suspension then he goes on the deal. This bullpen. We know chaplains on the roster Britain Jonathan holder Adamawa, vino, Chad green, we know Tommy Cain leads on the roster. He's had a good camp. That's six relievers. Right. There says making the team he's gonna be out of the bullpen is that something early on with the off days. To remain as that long man slash..

"With Eddie Coleman at night. Chicken fingers and stock and snacks. Then put a big expense report puts it on Caitlyn's gets repaid. Does it again the next week and pretends the pay a little attention to baseball. I mean, one a life. This guy's got Sweeney Murdy from south Florida. How are you? I can't believe anybody after eighteen years of this kind of no not really routine. You got you got down pretty good. Yeah. Yeah. Pretty much has to be that way. And why shouldn't it be that way? Why shouldn't it be that way? Yeah. Listen. So it's a hard job. But somebody's gotta do. Absolutely. Hey, it's it's another fun. We've had told you last year before it started. I think you're gonna have a really good spring really fun spring after they made the changes and brought the young players in because there'd be great interest after kind of a stale period of Yankee baseball with a lot of veteran players where the whole questions on spring training. We're ones that couldn't be answered the questions were how healthy are they going to stay and no one knew. So there wasn't a lot there. Now. We've turned a page. We watch last year with Torres and to har- players coming up and bird and Sanchez and all the guys we wanted to talk about Todd Frazier. And now we command, and we've added to Lewinsky we've added void f off of a half a year. Lemay you it's just going to be very interesting for Aaron Boone as he tries and put together, the jigsaw puzzle. Every night, how different do you think lineups will be night tonight for him? I think quite a bit. You know, I think the days of running your shame. Seven eight guys out there. Five or six days of the week are pretty much gone. And not just the Yankees before everything. It does seem though doesn't it? Yeah. I mean, you're looking at it understand, you know, fans frustration with it. But you you deal with a number of factors. And you know, the the opponents change what they can run at you pitching. Wise changes really how people feel day to day changes. So I think you've got an expectation to see a certain number of guys out there one hundred thirty or more times, but the way waiter arranged. Yeah. That can that can change, you know, I think the one thing that might make a little bit different as the Yankees are very right handed. You can move a lot of pieces around based off of right and left handedness. But I still think there's enough room in there to maneuver with again, just the factors that I mentioned that trying to see the same lineup three days in a row probably isn't going to happen. No, I doubt it. And I I'm interested in a lot of guys. Like, I said on the earlier today bird. Frazier gardner. Are going to be interesting in the spring. And then if in fact, they are committed to to Lewinsky. And then he plays. Now, you've got Andrew Harr Torres and LeMay you too can play one cannot in general. If in fact to Lewinsky is your shortstop, how do you expect that for some to be to be utilized by Aaron Boone? I think I'm not as concerned about the situation. You know Brett guard is gonna play a good bit. You know, they they brought him back. They like his defense. They they do like his his bat and baths. He takes. Frazier is going to be interesting to see how many bats he can force the axes to give him based on being healthy. And what he shows I think, you know, the the path is clear for him to make this team. But how many bats does he force them to give? That's really the big thing. And how many left you say? Well, we'll play a part in that to the situation is interesting. For a lot of a lot of the reasons you mentioned, I don't know how how what you gonna look after playing baseball games for a month. You know, I I know how the steel he looks after watching them work out. And I don't how he looks based on what people are saying he's continued to do working out. But it's a lot different just to grind baseball season for a guy who has not played baseball year. That's the key for me right there. You know what? I mean, it's he just hasn't played. So I think no matter how good a player is. I I don't think you can really read into too much if he sending tire season not actually playing the game. So a lot of it is based on that. And listen there they were a good defensive team last year. On the infield. And I think to Lewinsky healthy to Lewinsky can help that. Because it keeps laboratories a second base. I think pushing Torres over to short with and do hard on the left side creates a little uneasiness little inconsistent states. It doesn't help the overall defense infield. Put a gold Glover at second base and DJ LeMay you, but it's still not the right balance. I think if you're trying to improve their defense so a lot of it is riding on the health of virtual whiskey. Lemay you played one twenty eight last year he played the average one hundred and forty five to three years previous. He's thirty one years old in June. He expects to play I would think I don't think he's signed here to play seventy games. How how's that gonna work? Yeah. I think I think of get some time at second base by you know, is probably shifting towards over a little bit occasionally. I think you're gonna try to run let's whiskey into the ground, especially after the the whole missing a year. Thing. Right. The part of curious about is how often they're willing to spell into our late in games me. We saw what happened last year in the playoffs situation with with Neil Walker getting started third base because of the defensive concern. I do think as long as that remains a concern. I think what you is is going to get significant time there, Layton games. He can spell do. Hark as inally if you wanna move a D H spot around you can play third there. But I'm curious to see how often you're willing to take away. And it's that late in the game and give it to give it to LeMay you. So he can so you can get a couple of innings at third base in their late. When you have a leak, I'm interested to in weather bird stays on the roster. If Voight wins the job, they will you can't. I mean, I don't unless there are other. Other injury situations that happen or other positions that forced this kind of a move. You're gonna have a three-man bench. And I don't see a guy who is strictly a backup first baseman occupying one of those three spots the bird and Voight battle for first base is so much more interesting because they're only one can probably be on this team. I don't see any way around it, even when when our phone hits it earlier this week that you know, he thinks there's going to be a lot of a lot of quality depth here including a good team of AAA. I think that was another way of saying, you know, the guy who doesn't win first base is going to be at AAA. They both have options remaining. So that is something they can do. And I think it's gonna be fascinating to see how this plays out. You know, you like to say in spring training. You know, it's really not about results. It's about who. Who takes good at bats. You all listen. These guys are gonna get fifty or sixty chances this show. Oh what they can do. It's gonna be about the results in those at bats. And if it's equal I you know, I'd like to see where they go. If Greg bird has some sort of a spring like he did two years ago before that foul ball at the ankle changed everything I'm curious to see where they would lean because remember this is very right handed lineup and if bird has type of spring that shows he can he can steal this job. Then even if boy does well, I wanna know if they're concerned enough about the balanced the lineup that birth left that is is somewhat of a tiebreaker for them or some sort of difference maker for them. I, you know, I believe them when they say void has the upper hand or whatever phrase you wanna use because of his finish to the season last year. But if you know, Greg Burke does something to force there. Session here. Even if Luke Ford does. Well, what's the deciding factor there, I am? And I don't know if there's a great answer to that yet. Because we haven't seen play out that way, I agree. And I think it's a fascinating part of of spring training, and people will be paying attention to it and one other question I have regarding starting pitchers going less fewer innings. Now, you know when you're when you're making your lineup with they got left today. We're going to. This lineup. And then you think well in that left he'll be out in the fifth inning in all the I mean, we so if you're Aaron Boone or Mickey Callaway or any other manager in the world has become a tougher place for you to use that twenty-five, man puzzle. That you have every day you've got five or six pictures that may be needed in any given day and a lot of games five pitchers are used and then you play again the next night and the same with your lineup. Maybe you got three extra guys one of them is your backup catcher. So it's it's going. It's managing isn't what it used to be. You get a lot of options now and a lot of second guessing for fans for sure because good players are going to be on the bench. And there are also a lot of like secondary, and tertiary factors you consider when you say, oh, what's this lineup about, you know, you might know that another teams to you. It might be what both his first game of a series. But the other teams top relievers pitch two days in a row, right? Right. Exactly you've got to take that into consideration. When you're making out your are. Maybe they're Tampa. Right. Maybe they're going with openers. Yeah. And it might not make sense today. It's not a reason. I don't like posting lineups anymore. He's all you get is grief wise. It's only gonna get worse. Right. Yeah. You're gonna you're gonna figure out the lineup appeal when when the game starts so you don't need me to post it on Twitter 'cause I don't need. I don't need. I know. And and you can feel for them. I mean, they're they're looking at because because people when they look at a lineup are traditionalist. They're thinking about going seven innings the order. You're not looking any other factors graduate looking at the names in the order. And and are they starting a righty or a lefty? That's what you're thinking. That's why isn't this guy. And that is our knows. He probably is only going to go four innings. That's why. And they're yeah. And there are a lot of other things, you know, that that just go into trying to figure out what you have to deal with that day from your own players to not just who the opponent is. You know that that and you're not letting on to to us. Maybe you're trying not to tell us that that so and so has a has a bad quad. And you need to rest in just a couple of days or just get him off his feet for a little bit more than usual. So that it doesn't turn into something big. You know, those are the kinds of things that that the managers try to sometimes they're successful in keeping us on us and other times, it it just becomes too big a deal where they where they can't do that. But yeah. A lot of different things going into the lineup. And even if there aren't very many different combinations. Because we said you only have three players on the bench. There's only so much. You can do which again is where the versatility has to come in the Yankees, you're going to carry one extra catcher LeMay, you is already your extra guy on the infield. You can play second. You can play third. I wonder if he can play I, you know. And if that's if if he can play I if they wanted to play first, he's a right handed batter. So that could backfire into who wins the first base job, if they're both playing well your outfielder, we already said, I bet this point you'd think it's cleared path is cleared for Clinton Frazier. As long as you know, he stays healthy. And again, it's just a matter of trying to figure out where there's a bachelor comes from the fan loves Clint Frazier. You know, I can tell already from calls because he's a different cat. You know, he's more athletic more bulletin China. Shop more plays with his hair. On fire at a team that's pretty buttoned up in a team. That's not as athletic as Houston or Boston. How concerned is Cashman and or boon that they're not as athletic as Houston in Boston..

"If you have Alexa, or Google just say play WFAN and you'll be locked into the fan. Sixty six. It's seven hundred five here on this evening. It's JJ Joshi's Stansky came forward Stevie summers here on the fan. Eight seven seven seven sixty six sixty six and it's like the before. And after portion of the shell. We have the before which is up until seven fifteen basketball is gonna come your way. And then we will be back after the game taking you to oneself. One of those weird nights. I gotta kinda getting in my Steve Somers a little thinner. Maybe get some work done and end sides back on it. A couple of hours. Let's breath and fire your calls. Let's head to queens Charlie up next on the fan. What's up, Charlie? How are you? I'm greg. Happy Friday, buddy. Happy Friday to you. Charlie. What's going on here? Yeah. I'm actually listening. You folks phenomenal. The fan basically eighteen hours a day. That sounds beautiful beautiful. Exactly. So I was in a Chambi and. The big thing today air was about salary caps. Right. So we know the giants latching the cap, right? We got released some thoughts. My question is to you. And I might hang up. Listen JJ. Thinks there's a possibility that shitty Brady and. Bob Kraft may be doing some money under the table. Listen, if they are Charlie I couldn't tell you. I mean, I don't know if it's on a record. And I can't speak on what somebody else said. I can't because I'm not listening. I'm sleeping. I'm running errands. Some get my coffee, I'm doing this. I'm doing that. I cannot listen to radio station twenty four seven and say, well, so and so said this, and so and so said that I tend to it. Not fair to me. If I said it be my guess bringing up. Tom Brady's getting taken care of. Trust me on that. And the patriots. They've mastered the salary cafe eighteen years. So I don't care how they're doing. It. Seems to work said to Linden New Jersey, Don is up next on a foul is up done. Zack has type. Latch last year and the next three inches this year. Backing bullpen four five. Nervous. Okay. I don't care facility. He rose in his prime. In the National League east, and there are a handful of. Today who not many, but? I think people are thinking I agree with that. Don, it's not on board. You're working at three pitchers who need to show you. They could go out and dominate every fifth day and do it for the entire year. Listen to Graham did it last year. There's no getting around that. He was the best pitcher in the National League was the best pitcher in baseball. Let's be fair though. Wheeler took him about two months ago. Gone. Syndergaard missed a ton of time and was up and down when he was he was not vintage Noah Syndergaard. If all three of those guys from game one game one sixty two. A high level. I agree. The Mets will have a much different feel and look to their team. No argument there. But that needs to hap, let's head to New Jersey Joe up next on a foul up jail. Hey JJ. What's happening? Not bad. Where did he is? He thinking that's winning a championship with the will gets more likely to come before. Or after Fred, so. News, foyer gel, not selling team anytime soon, the not and. When Fred wilpon time. Comes and goes Jeff wilpon taking over the team. Now, maybe who knows? Things change ten years from now twenty s from now, but I would say, you know, with the amount of money baseball team is going to bring in. And our guys if I own a baseball team. I wouldn't be looking to sell it. I would wanna make sure it's in my family's possession for generations to come. Met fans are gonna like to hear that. But that's reality. But said to Asbury park Victor up next. He's on a foul up Victor. JJ you are breath of fresh air. My brother, I appreciate that victory. Very john. Thank you. Look. I don't think the Yankees are cheap following me real quick on this one. I feel there's no such thing is known as a crowded outfield. If you have a crowded outfield, which means you have strength on the bench. You can definitely maneuver. We don't have any idea. What's going to happen to first base yet? We don't have any idea. What other things are going to be? So you could work Sanchez and Gardner and Bryce Harper. All true. This little merry go round that we can do it. If our balloons the manager he says, he is he can do it. And I strongly believe that if we bring in Harper. Most guaranteed World Series. But I just feel that that is if they make that move that's the move to make and don't be afraid of having a crowded outfield. Thank you, Jay. Well, listen Victor. He's also expressed interest that potential applying first base. I agree. Offer has always been a better fit the Manny Machado. Benefit because the Yankees have enough right handed power hitters and a half shortstop third baseman. I like long so splendid me where Machado fits adequate. He does not. I've always been on Harper. But it's not a travesty. Now, you see you can do it again. Now whenever for Greg Burke. And I know a lot of people concern about the idea of going to be an everyday player. He won't be. You're gonna see a lot more than the outfield, and hopefully this'll be the year. Maybe configure your brakes on the seat. And really shows you why he was one of the top prospects in the sport. And why the Yankees use Tim as the headliner in that Andrew Miller deal from a couple years ago? Let's say to Long Beach Kevin of next on a foul is up pound for pound, the best stor- sky around ten and I appreciate that. What's happening, bro? Listen, brother. I agree with you. I gotta take to task. Okay. Okay. When I go to Yankee Stadium. I put down my hard-earned money. You take my kids. You don't have kids. But I do I spent a lot of money over there. I wanna see stars JJ. Classic second. They don't have. They don't have enough stars on his team. They do not let me tell you come on..
