"From NPR news. I'm child. Snyder. Demonstrations continued in Rochester, New York last night, with police firing tear gas to break of crowds. NPR's Brian ran reports on the protest that broke out this week over the death of Daniel proved in police custody. Daniel proved a black man died in March after being arrested by police. Video made public this week showed his body naked in the street had covered outraged people March for hours again Friday night, police first described prudes death was a drug overdose, prompting accusations of a cover up. Justin Moore has joined the protest. We demand answers and we demand justice. Our demands are that the police be removed and also that the mayor and all parties involved step down, effective immediately. Seven officers have been suspended. Police used tear gas again last night to break up the peaceful March. Brian Man, NPR News, Rochester, New York police and Rochester declared unlawful assembly last night. They did the same in Portland, Oregon, which is marking 100 straight nights of protests this weekend. A nationwide eviction ban is now in place through the end of the year order by the Centers for Disease Control. But NPR's Kris Arnold reports. It's not automatic, and there's no money behind it to be protected. Rennes need to sign a declaration and send it to their landlord. You can search for the details at CDC dot gov. Getting help from a legal aid attorney is a good idea. Also, landlord say the ban isn't fair because it doesn't provide any money to cover the lost rent. Greg Brown is with the National apartment Association. This is an incomplete solution. And my members worry greatly about what the damage that they're going to sustain and what damage that industry will sustain from this housing advocates to want Congress to come up with money for a rental assistance plan. Otherwise, when the temporary ban is over, they say millions of people will be evicted anyway, because they can't afford all the missed rent payments. Chris Arnold. NPR News Everyday marks a traditional beginning of the campaign season and in this anything but typical campaign, NPR's Mara Liasson reports that we should still start seeing a lot more of the candidates. With less than two months to go. The presidential race is still remarkably stable in an average of polls. Joe Biden still has a lead nationally and in the battleground states that will determine the winner. Neither buy nor President Trump got much of a bounce from their conventions. Biden is focusing on the pandemic and what he says is. Trump's failure to lead polls show a consistent advantage for Biden on that issue. Trump, on the other hand, is betting the voters will care more about law and order and that their concerns are shifting from racial justice to the riots and cities like Portland, Oregon, and Kenosha, Wisconsin. But polls show that although support for the black lives matter movement has softened its not a zero sum game. In other words, Trump isn't getting an equivalent boost when voters are asked to rate his response to the unrest. Mara Liasson. NPR NEWS. This is NPR news and it says W C in New York. I'm David first. The empty says it will continue disinfecting the transit system, even though the federal government plans to stop covering most of the cost. W When my CI's Stephen Nessen reports since March, PMT has been cleaning every subway car and bus multiple times a day, as well as shutting down overnight service for deep cleanings. It's also been outfitting workers with P P E and taking their temperatures. The cost of everything is expected to be half a billion dollars this year. The Federal Emergency Management Agency will pay the empty for 75 per cent of the costs, but only through mid September. The empty A is already facing a $12 billion budget shortfall. This only adds to its woes empty Chairman Pat Foy, quoting an infamous daily news headline. Has concluded that Washington is again telling New York to drop dead. FEMA did not respond to a request for comment. City Councilman is sounding the alarm about poor ventilation at a school campus in Manhattan that includes several high schools. The Martin Luther King Jr campus is located near Lincoln Center. Mark Trager, who chairs the council's education committee, says classrooms inside this campus have no windows. And air vents don't circulate enough air. It's not just one classroom, numerous classrooms. This has been an ongoing issue for a long time, and I don't see any realistic scenario where they could fix the issues by the 21st. Students who choose a mix of remote and in person learning or expected back at school on the 21st Traeger is asking the city to relocate the schools before then. The mayor's office says a report on the completed school inspections.

"For the win and they lose. So they had a chance to force overtime and they chose not to Texas win 78 76. This is a thing where in tournaments I understand why coaches try to avoid over time saying that the more talented basketball team's gonna wind up winning Don't really understand that with 3.8 seconds, you can go in and drive and give a guy a chance to Uh, to potentially hit a layup easier than a lamp in the three point shot, but didn't happen. Davidson misses the three Texas wins, but they do not cover And that's a bummer. So Oh, and one of the day for me half a unit down starts. It's been sort of the street's been where I am here after going really hot. Um, you know all my plays over last couple days. It's been sort of rough run of it. One thing that I did not play. I should have picked it during a couple of our Um, watch, I think was on both contests for the circus Sports Million and for the West Gate Super contest. We took the patriots and plus 2.5 against the Cardinals, and the entire world was on the Cardinals. And this is what happened yesterday in the NFL. It just it felt like everyone thought they knew what was gonna happen. And they jumped on all these favorites. And we'll talk to Dave Sheriff in a bit about what happened, but it was ugly again for the public. Just really, really ugly 91% of the money at Fanduel on the Giants. They didn't cover 89% of the money on the Cardinals that in win 87% of the money on the Chiefs. They didn't cover 84% of the money on the Browns. They didn't cover 83% of the money on the Raiders. They didn't win. 82% of the money on the Dolphins. They didn't win E mean, it's just you go through yesterday, and you're like, Oh, my gosh. Like if you got out of there yesterday if you didn't get destroyed. Congratulations because so many of your fellow gamblers got ruined yesterday. They were ruined the week before. It's been a really rough run in the books are just completely rolling right now. And they are annihilating the public and the professionals both now as I mentioned to team teasers, or the one things where they got crushed on 34 in 10, so they got worked over hard. With two team teasers, but overall, I mean, it's Not what you want. Okay, it zits, not what you want. It's not what you're looking for, And it's You know, maybe tonight will be different tonight feels like it tonight. Few feels like a chance to go into it and have an opportunity to go into it and say yes that you know this is the side to be on and This is you know, the Seahawks are going to run away with the game. Maybe, but like it, doesn't it feel like an eagle's cover? I've bet Seattle again. I'm telling you, it feels like an eagle's cover tonight Just because you know things have been going so one sided on this so Rough, Ron, you know for the public, but you're not alone. A lot of people are having some difficult situations and difficult runs. Shaka Smart. By the way at Texas, I think Texas might be firing their hit their head football coach and their head basketball coach in the off season. Shaka Smart's got so much talent. He won the games that matters. But that game against Davidson. There is so much more basketball talent on the Texas Longhorn roster that you can't You have to win that game by 15 points like you just have to. You cannot allow Davidson toe hang around like that and have a shot at the end of beach. You If Texas ranked in the top 25, which they are, they've got nine players ranked in the top 60 of their respective recruiting class is coming out of high school nine. They got a five star player and Greg Brown. They've got you mean just Shaka Smart was incredible at VCU Incredible coach, But there's got to be real concerns and questions about where that guy is. Right now with the talent and I mean, yeah. It's It. You kind of shake your head a little bit at what has happened over the last couple of weeks. You know, just a Texas in the way they have played now poorly. The Texas football program has been looking in Texas, losing the Iowa state at home over the weekend with an opportunity for Um, with the opportunity for Texas to make the big 12 championship game Now Iowa State Pretty much is a lock. And if you're looking at Tom Herman again, Tom Herman as a favor is awful. Tom Herman has a dog is just money but betting on him to cover his lines. It's just not smart, and they've done this way too often where they've just kicked. It just stumbled all over themselves. It's brutal. I mean, it's just absolutely brutal. When you watch Texas football and now Texas basketball as well, you just kind of like I don't understand. You know that. I just don't understand. So there's a lot of things going on right now. If you are AH college basketball or college football fan. This is a really, really hard year to gamble period. Okay, but it's even more difficult because of what's going on with covert 19 and the game's being canceled and things that aren't Going the way that you want them to in terms of player availability, and, you know, could there be a situation where Ohio State does not play enough games to qualify for the big 10? Jap ship came? Yes. So if you're the future wage over, like all the big 10, they're gonna win the they're gonna You know how sits and win the big 10 going away to the best team right? Well, they may not qualify for the Big 10 championship game. And they may make the college football playoffs which they have not mean the C F P s. They have not said how many games you must play to qualify for a reason they don't want to be caught. Having to take in Ohio State who doesn't qualify for the big 10 championship game, and they're saying, OK, we're gonna take you because you're one of the four best teams and it doesn't matter that you know. I don't know Wisconsin because Annette eligible Northwestern, The eligible mean like they win the Big 10 Championship game. How pathetic Right Northwestern's in there? Like what, Like that's not gonna happen. So it's just a really funky, funky year we got another big 10 game Northwestern in Minnesota was canceled today. You did the kid do problems at with Kovar 19 issues at Minnesota 21 players at Minnesota have come down with covert 19th. There's clearly a big issue there. With it so You know what we'll see. It is. It's been very tough, but tonight. I mean, maybe this is the game where the public comes back. Seattle minus 6.5. I'm on it. I've also teased it. But Seattle minus 6.5 83% of the handle public money, all on Seattle. It just again. If you want to fade the public and you want to fade..

CDC Issues Sweeping Temporary Halt On Evictions Nationwide Amid Pandemic

"Millions of Americans have been at real risk of eviction over the past few months. Many of those people have now been given a lifeline in a dramatic move. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is ordering a halt on vacations across the country through the end of this year NPR's Chris Arnold is reporting on this and joins us now Chris Good Morning. So this I mean, this is a huge move by the CDC. It doesn't those seem on its face like something agency would have the power to do. Hey Rachel. Yeah. So I mean you might think because especially so far during this pandemic, we've seen you know nothing very forceful from the CDC. It's been criticized for having voluntary guidance that let states and businesses can do whatever they want. You know I if that's the CDC SORTA walking on little. Kitty cat feed this though is the CDC you know booming it's feet like Paul Bunyan, or something. And doing something much more dramatic and the CDC says it does have the authority under the Public Health Service Act of nineteen, forty four that gives the government broad power to stem the spread of communicable diseases and look I mean the basic idea of course is that forcing people out into homeless shelters or crammed together living with relatives that that is very likely to get a lot more people sick. So, who does this eviction ban apply to specifically? All right. Well, quickly to qualify renters have decided declaration saying that they tried to get unemployment benefits or other kinds of support that they'll make partial payments as much as they can afford to their landlord day can't make more than about one hundred, thousand dollars a year or twice that if you file jointly. And that if you're a victim, you have no other option than homelessness or living with more people in in close proximity. which would increase the risk, which is exactly what they're trying to avoid. The rate of Krona virus here. So how many people are we talking about? How many people with this effect we're talking about a lot of people when when estimate from the national low income housing coalition is thirty to forty million people in seventeen million households or families were at risk of losing their home by the end of the year of something like this wasn't done Diana tells the CEO of the group and I spoke to her last night. Well, my reaction is a feeling of tremendous relief. I. Mean It's a pretty extraordinary. And bold and unprecedented measure that the White House is taking that will save lives and prevent tens of millions of people from losing their homes in the middle of pandemic. But she says also Congress or the White House should have done this months ago. Instead, we've had this crazy quilt patchwork of federal state local moratoriums. Lots of people weren't covered and thousands of people have already been affected. What are you hearing from landlords about this Chris? Well, insurance, the landlords are saying well, who's supposed to pay for this? You Know Democrats in Congress had plans for a moratorium but along with that was one hundred, billion dollars of assistance to renters and landlords to pay for that that is not a part of this order spoke to Greg Brown with the National Apartment Association. We're really concerned about this because the piece that's missing is the most important piece in this whole process, which is rental assistance because if the moratorium is put in place, rents are not paid, but the owners continue to have to meet their financial obligations and how are they supposed to do that? Who's going to help them pay their bills and it's not just landlords who rental assistance Intel who heard from she to says, look this needs to be coupled with federal money to pay for missed rent. It's a half-measure eviction moratoriums on their own. Create financial cliff for renters to fall off of when those moratoriums eventually expire and back rent is due and renters are no more able to pay then than they were at the beginning of the pandemic. And, we should say all this puts pressure on lawmakers to make a deal and come up with some money to to pay and and help people struggling during during the pandemic.

"Beautiful. So you're in Austin what just give a a thirty seconds sort of thumbnail intro to yourself and your work all have all interested in introduced before our conversation on the podcast. But Yeah Jazz losing right so some integrative psychiatrist and basically what that means means is that I believe in an evidence base holistic approach. And so you'll hear me advocate for this idea of green psychiatry and basically where that term comes from Is this idea of You know blending traditional and conventional psychiatry. I tree side do prescribe medications but also talked to folks about a mind body approaches a talked to him about physical activity I talked about nutrition. talked about spirituality and purpose if that's something that is useful in meaningful for them. So I'm all about Blending I'd say east versus West when it comes to mental health than Wallace. That's that's so cool. I'm actually learning something pretty big right here so tell me if this is you know not not correct but is in a sense. Is there an analog to more of a Natural Pathak Sort of medical doctor in terms of how you approach mental health. So as I say right and so I would say that Folks who describe themselves as complementary and alternative of physicians would be more in line with the natural path breath. I would say that What differs from what I do is that I also I mean if someone comes in and they're looking PROZAC I'm not gonNa tell them? Hey can't have PROZAC like I need to give you some Rodeo Laroche Gonda instead really what. The patient is looking for. Amazing Yeah Okay and we came. We found you o-on found you you in a recent article in men's health looking at it right now and the title of that is the stigma. Depression affects even psychiatrists. And Yeah. It was a really it was a really Poignant and powerful article that I really appreciate and I also want to kind of name it right away here. I feel I feel like you know your mission and what you're doing is is certainly You know there's definitely alignment with what we're doing in terms of making a mental health care and and mental wellness You said in our pre conversation here not not just acceptable but cool right or not just like like you're working to help is there a focus. I'm curious is. Do you have a specific focus in your work foreign with men is that yeah I mean I think that again in my practice I in both men and women Between the ages of thirteen sixty five generally But a passion I'll say passion of mine is reaching more men. I mean Danny think about the fact that women are diagnosed with depression twice as often as men are yet men are or three times as likely to succumb to suicide. And so I've you right in my view. I don't feel that women are at higher risk for depression. Shen per se I just feel like a lot of men are not coming in And they're not being diagnosed and so If I put on my website if I do who Shows like these if I write articles if I allow myself to be a bit vulnerable in talking about my own history with depression then I see that as way to kind of open the door and invite more men to come in and get the help they need. Yeah and so. I've been asked this question a thousand times but I'm going to ask it to you too to Because I think it's worth continuing to to sort of dive deeper into the question. That is what is it today. If you took a snapshot that is still still keeping men from addressing these. These parts of their life in these needs that they have what do you. What do you really this? You know to be honest. I don't think any different today than it was say. Twenty years ago where one hundred years ago. I think that there's this idea that men have to tough things out That they have to be resilient and I think often times away they define. Resiliency is not showing emotion not allowing themselves to cry not allowing any type of vulnerability And so I mean we hear people like Bernanke Brown down in Houston You know talking about this idea of there being strength and courage invulnerability. A that is a message that I actually Would like to carry over to lot of men and so I think if we can allow men to realize that as well then more people can come in Again get the help they need. Yeah and I'm curious in your practice. What the ratio of men to women is I mean what and I've heard this anecdotally from different practitioners and kind of all over the country lately but do you see a shift happening and I'm just GonNa paint a broader picture picture here so you know say for men to come receive You know psychiatric or psychological support but let's also include you know the Yoga. Oh good practices. Let's talk about other holistic wellness and you know I. I kind of make a joke about this. But it's not really a joke but you know even whole foods just general idea here of ourselves yeah left happening are more men coming table me tell you something that I think is is really beautiful is if you open if you open the door If if mincy that you are a person you know as a medical practitioner or or someone who's just interested in helping men than more men will come in you know I I am. I am delighted to say that Since I've opened my center in Austin Austin back in July I see a lot of men a lot And just recently a guy came in and I said you know you know what brings you in today. How how can I help you and you know he said to me I thought it was just beautifully? said he I read your article in Men's health of never seen a shrink before and I I thought you know it's time it's time In so again. I think that if if more men are seeing that you know people like you people like me are having these conversations that it's okay to get help more people come in also say again. You know as mentioned to you before we start recording this idea of yoga if you stem back to ancient Shen tradition Yoga was a practice. That was you know in its earliest form. Demean women weren't even allowed to do yoga a yoga something that was A practice for men and so again this idea that Yoga is not available accessible. assessable for men is something that I'm trying to To challenge here. There's such a curious puzzle there to me in an I'm curious. I wonder if maybe maybe you know this in India Today. Is it still more of a male activity. I can't I can't answer that question. I idea an idea I would say that Again if you're looking at the tradition of Yoga woman named injured evie was largely responsible for bringing yoga to the Western world. Oh you know some fifty six years ago But I would say that now again if you look at the The ratio of women to men actively practicing in Yoga about twenty eight of regular yoga practitioners are men which is actually up from previous years. Here's your Yoga Lions They regularly do these large surveys with looking to see how many men and women are practicing yoga on. So I'd say that it's something that's definitely a up on opposite swing which I think is great. I mean anecdotally in you know in my life actually went to a class. Two weeks ago it was mistake like nine burly dude's at my eighties has like this feels different. This is really interesting. That'll that'll happen. Yeah it's it's weird and I think it has shifted in the last twelve fifteen years but you had to go a little deeper new yoga here too. I'm curious Yeah so what is Your Yoga Background Mike. Have you done do teaches well. Or what's the full scope of your. Yes I I would say that. I've I've probably doing yoga now. Regularly for about fifteen years and I initially went to A girl in my life who took me to a yoga class often happens with with men And so the girl I was dating she took me to Yoga class. First Time I went to to a yoga class I absolutely hated it. I felt intimidated by it. I was one of a few young guys In the room at at the time I couldn't do this. I still can't do the splits Can stand on my head and you know it was just a daunting experience for me But again we had a groupon. It was one of those things you know. You have this this reclassifies for seven days. You'RE GONNA come back again right and so I kept going back And I noticed win that that groupon was was finished It's something that I missed. You know it was a very stressful time. My live in school And I found that when I was a practicing yoga on the mad Hundred and five degrees in the room owes doing victim style yoga. I just wasn't able to to think about the things that made me nervous or or young schist And I would say that you know as time progress you know. I continue to yoga through through medical medical school after medical school. There's time in my life. I was passing out flyers of the day my wife and I got engaged. She's GonNa she gonNA. Hey me for saying this. But the day we got engaged we were passing out flyers at our Yoga studios that we could get a free classes when I did right got me. You know got my first first class. My my girlfriend In College Graphical Duluth Minnesota and walk in the room. It was like a Ymca or something in the front row was a legitimate rockstar sky. Allen Allen Spar Hockey's the leads for my favorite band at the time of low and he was doing yoga. You know for whatever reason that was enough to hook me on my yeah yeah yeah for sure That is reminds me so like a couple of weeks ago. I was seeing a young guy in my clinic. You know and I told him I do yoga I mean he looks at Liam five eight five nine hundred sixty pounds. He's not interested in Yoga but then he found out that So Aubrey Marcus. Who is as you know a a big Guy Austin Actually settled panel with him on a minister of self care a south by southwest last year abuse abuse. Like Hurry Marcus he he does yoga. He owns Black Swan Yoga. Okay Yoga's leads completely for me so if I remark is does it that I'd be interested in Sioux. That's the isn't isn't that the flat truth isn't that some of what just needs to happen. And and you're right that like you all of this stuff. We're talking about just taking care of ourselves. I really think it is simply not simply but part of it is a project literally to have men that men already look up to you know share and tout the benefits of taking care ourselves so I just yesterday I was. I don't know perusing. I don't know if it was the news. Instagram or something. But I saw an article about. It's a a green beret veteran. I think is act- active active green beret that had a statement that basically said I do yoga because it it helps me kill people like you know I had two reactions wanted to.

"To say that we have proven and that we can help men start men's groups that are very functional very powerful and very effective even if you have no experience whatsoever so that is what what is possible. Also if you're not ready to start a group you can now go on and search existing groups and see if you can get yourself a seat so go after it. I'm proud of all the work. Our team's team's been doing on that and it's an exciting step to really start helping men all over the country in the world we have some great events coming up to. There are hot springs and Asana Cave and and we are going to be just diving very very deep with the help of Mother Nature and the help of this group of amazing man coming together to do this. You'RE GONNA walk away from this. A changed person. Listen I can attest to that from all of the expedition's we've done. I changed myself every single time. I leave lead one. And he's working to help. Just deflate the stigma that keeps men from getting the help they need. There's some really great information that came out on this podcast broadcast about depression. What is it how does it come out in? Men as opposed to women Anxiety in a lot of these are actually a lot of specific questions nations here about about these diagnoses. joining us for the first time because of the new our change we've been doing this since the beginning of the year right where every thirty two weeks and I think that's pretty cool yeah it is and for people who may be new to the idea of the odd mysterious fascinating history of Pittsburgh you're an amateur historian long I mean grand I mean that in a sense that you're not being paid by anybody to do what is it you do that's right and for years now you've been compiling information about Pittsburgh and the region's past and how many years now we've been doing this and the score was five years now hello my yeah that guy creeps up on you right but yes five years of odds mysterious and fascinating things have been uncovered in Pittsburgh history in there so much more still waiting to be uncovered and remember what that first thing was yeah of course there was the origin of the names of the rivers three rivers the Monongahela River of many falling banks the Ohio which translates to the river of blood in the Allegheny which was named after an ancient race of giants called all the Galway so yeah please seriously were you surprised because I'm surprise hearing this were you surprised when everything was different after I found that information out I'm just driving over a bridge over the Ohio River one day and you know looking down and I'm like everything is different now feelings it was awakening moment that the the no this is all an early Pittsburgh history books it's in every legend and tail in there that's ever been published Mister Pittsburgh that order of the names of the other three rivers and that was a something that wasn't taught to me in school it's something that I didn't really see out there easily accessible and easy to find an easy to learn and I figured all people want to hear this as well and that's the exact reason why I created a page and so much so that daisy her on Facebook on Twitter you're on Instagram Facebook huge following yeah well over one hundred ten fifteen thousand people that are following you there and on a regular basis you're posting these new finds that you and got a a counter yeah yeah I mean they're not all that it's not really fair to call new fines because if the there's been there the whole time court is that nobody is really on covered the more found them now since everything's been digitized archives and and a and it's kind of like digging deep into these archives institutions that have been at all this stuff the fighting the best bits of all that stuff and putting it all one source that's what the page really us them now what we do is kinda topwater king back at a two week period once again the week that was and the week coming up in Pittsburgh history but then you also take the time out on a regular basis the kind of dive deep into different subjects with the odd cast on KDKA yeah yeah the Pittsburgh Rockcastle show that comes out it's on my radio not common KDKA dot com a and it's a to look in the interesting subjects so like you'll hear us talk about a bunch of different stores today and this is a way to talk about one of those stories for half an hour and in I have guests on I just had Greg brown the voice of the pirates one of four people who had the opportunity to be the main voice of the Pittsburgh Pirates in their entire history for people yeah isn't it when you actually look at the numbers of the of the head guy right the other head announcer your head broadcaster in fact the term broadcasting was invented here on KDKA through baseball nineteen twenty one one Harold Arlen decided to go to one of the games and start just talking about what he saw don't even knew what play by play once he did that here in Pittsburgh because getting it was the first commercial stations on it was there the the queen that word broadcast so everything from that but him Lydia rose rose well Bob prince they already for Terry Ryan and Greg brown I'm in a couple of the people of fill in gaps like Milo Hamilton a couple other ones and pianist but it's so we talk about that so we we will pay for a whole hour actually with Greg brown and we we we just talked about the origin of the of broadcasting baseball you why a jadi come up of catch phrases and he's won the coins raise the jolly Roger Saudi come up with that and and it's a lawyer is an E. doesn't persons of every single one of the broadcasters is it was great so but about the mayor on my so that ritzy back of and I'm having people from the bizarre symphony I having some famous movie actors coming on and musicians and they and so lonely just not interesting interviews which are unique but it also digging into the stories and it'll show on Johnny Appleseed in Pittsburgh Johnny Appleseed looking for twelve years in the city of Pittsburgh twelve years did not know that and subtle I didn't even know even visited let alone live match talking about over forty five minutes so there's enough information out there that I can do a whole show on Johnny Appleseed in Pittsburgh and I also did so like there's that there's George Washington there's a whole bunch of people though is it's a good school shop a little twenty episodes and so far all right and once again Pittsburgh odd cast you can find it on our website KDKA radio dot com all right we're going to go through the week that was and the week coming up from August the eleventh all the way through till the twenty fourth and we're gonna start with August eleventh I tell.
