"Was as a young kid who had been who has been through a lot. What's your initial reaction to see this from Hudson? We mentioned how important he was about three or four times. Everybody deciphered that it was Giovanni Reina and the fallout that led to the reign of family, his parents, reaching out to the federation, speaking ill a Greg berhalter and his family and the fallout that is today. There's too much water under this bridge. And that's why it seems like the most rational thing to do is from somebody in the federation, Anthony Hudson, in this case, to go and visit a player in Giovanni reyna, who's not been plain lately. Yeah. So you got to figure out why he's not been playing lately. One is it health because he's got his fair share fair share of health issues, fitness, is he not say it. Well, is he not fit to is it more? Is it something mentally? Is he not in the right state of mind? Or is there a problem within the team? You need to figure that out because there's still this lingering dark cloud over Giovanni Reina and what it will be like the very first time he's in that U.S. mission camp, that setup. And the only person that was there that's in charge right now, that's a reality because it's not going to be Ernie Stewart. It's not going to be a Brian McBride. It's Anthony Hudson. This after becoming GM back in 2020. Sam also reporting that while Greg berhalter is still a candidate to return his manager, it is, quote, increasingly less likely that will happen in light of the fallout from the berhalter Reina family scandal herc. Brian McBride out is this the right move by U.S. soccer. I don't know. Can I be honest? The utmost respect for Brian McBride, I don't know what Brian McBride did at USA. What that GM role really entails. You have Ernie Stewart there. So unless it's something we don't know about a breach in protocol or something else because it is really sporting, there were two goals set out for this U.S. men's national team. Qualifying and getting out of the group. And they did them both. So where did it go wrong for Brian McBride? I don't know what his day to today duties were unless you're just an ambassador for club teams from club team to the national team and you're just making trips, making phone calls. I do think Greg berhalter is going to have club offers. Yeah. "It's fantastic to see. And I was beating the Met drum for the U.S. before just about anybody. It wasn't because the distribution like that, it was, it was for shot stopping. And for us to be here now and we haven't had him to be a hero. Well, I guess that is about everybody else, isn't it? Because when you mention that, I had forgotten that Timothy waya got on the end of it. Because he had been doing so many other things throughout the game. He has done so much for this team in the first two games, and it didn't occur to me that he also did dropped in and received balls like that, but it shouldn't surprise me because he's a player that can do everything. And we have talked about Christian Pulisic rightfully so. We have talked about Wes and McKinney. We have talked about so many players and I really want to make sure we talk about Timothy Leia because he is ultimately the one who has been on the end of so many of these attacking chances. That as the U.S. has been dangerous in the final third, he has either been the one combining in possession or more specifically and more often, offering the verticality. Because Greg berhalter made a big tenant of this team, the verticality, the ability for them to play behind defenses. The ability for them to play quickly. And there is a risk early on when he made that when he turned that lever up for the team, that the soccer was going to get ugly, that it was going to get a little bit direct, that they were going to lose their ability to play in possession. "About that. So if you're Ricardo Pepe, you have to feel it's out of sight out of mind. What can I do to latch on into the mind of Greg berhalter and this coaching tree? The one thing I would say is he went 11 months without scoring a goal, hurt. So how important can a goal be? Like, clearly. It's now two and two assist in two goals and a Keystone growing. He dominated in the Greg berhalter style. Scored a goal, but they didn't win. Okay. Look, 11 months without a golden keep him out of the team, I'm not going to go too crazy saying that this goal certainly punches his ticket for Qatar. So I'm going to say the person that needed the bounce back game the most and actually who I think took advantage of their opportunity the most is Christian Pulisic. Now, as we said, it wasn't a big opportunity, right? He came on as an 84th minute sub for Chelsea. But he gets an assist. Now, just like people might say, oh, well, the goal for Ricardo Pepe was a scrappy one. It was an ugly one. I know there are some people that might say, oh, this assist for Christian Pulisic isn't all that much because it is Conor Gallagher who hits a worldie. And will fully acknowledge that. But this is a great, great play from Christian Pulisic, and it is exactly her exactly why he's on the field because he can drive at a defense when they're packed in. He can break that defense down. "Friendlies in this recent round of action for the U.S. national team. In fact, this year, in 7 games against teams going to the World Cup, they've only won one. They've had three draws and three losses. After their scholars draw with Saudi Arabia, this is what their coach Greg berhalter had to say about their performance on the night. I think it was a positive step for the group, the intensity, the desire against a tough opponent, a compact opponent, happy with that. Not happy, I think with the execution. I think when I, when I evaluate the game in its entire, I just said, we performed below expectations. We weren't up to our normal standard, and that's almost across the board. So it's disappointing because you know you get the opportunity to play against a good opponent. It's going to be a technical opponent. They're going to be pressing. I say that in large part because of what Greg berhalter told us after he made the decision, which is, look, I've seen what I need to see out of Jordan peacock. I think if you're Jordan PEEP fogg and you want to worry or if a U.S. fan and you want to worry, there is a Greg berhalter quote that I think might make you worry quite a bit. And that's the idea that he's going out saying, look, it may not be the best forwards, it may be the guys that best fit this system, and I wonder there what you think about that. Because that seems to imply that the system and Greg berhalter's focus on the system is more important than production. And that's where you might get nervous, then maybe Greg berhalter sees the system as more important than what is obvious to all of us, the thing we can see on paper, which is goals and not just goals are, but goals in a top 5 league. "Think you could slice this either way. And you can make a pretty good case. I'm saying stock up, but I'm going to ask you if I'm right. Because really, I was not impressed with Jordan Morrison. Because of the goal, because of the goal, if we're going to act like coming from behind in the slop against El Salvador proof so much about this team and it's important, then we have to put some value. We have to put some weight to the guy that scored the goal. The guy that scores the goal in the end. So maybe I'm exaggerating, but you've been in those shoes. You've been the guy trying to get onto the roster late. I very much feel Jordan Morris is a bubble guy right now. Is this play enough to get him off that bubble? No, it's not enough to get him off the bubble. And I love me some Jordan Morris. I was his teammate. I think he's an unbelievable person. And I've seen what he can do at the international level. We're talking about a guy who was nominated for a U.S. soccer player of the year. Three times, three times, and the last time I think he should have won it, he had just as many goals as Christian Pulisic and more assist, 5 goal 6 assists, but he's on the air and long project. He's there right now because Greg berhalter has so much faith and trust in these guys that he's trying to see if they can come back to pre injury form. He's exhausting all options with these guys giving them every benefit of the doubt that he's not given other players to see if they can be that player by Qatar. But you can't say stock up because this is a player that when we've seen him at his height, it's nowhere near right now. This is a player that's proven it before. Big goal, yes, gold that's going to do wonders for his confidence. Sure, but neither club nor country has he shown that his stock up right now and a lot a lot of competition at his position. So he's scoring goals in MLS and you could say whatever you want about the level MLS and he's scoring goals now here. And he happens to play and the happens to play a lot. It's a clear stock up. Now, it's not my stock up. It's not your stock up. It's stock up in the U.S. men's national. This kid's going to Qatar and Greg were halter's mind. How could an appy stock up? "They never had a marquee moment where they battled through like something like this. Well, they finally have it. I saw it for the first time that fight that heart. I saw for that first time that willingness and termination to get through no matter the circumstance. I take that from this game. Okay, yeah, and I think that's pretty much the story that Greg berhalter is saying in his post match press conference, right? This team proves something to me. In less than ideal circumstances, I think we gotta give Greg berhalter a lot of credit here, not necessarily for the game, but managing the window, right? We talked about the decision to bring the a team. Yeah. If we're gonna criticize Tata martino for not doing it, we gotta give credit to Greg berhalter for doing it. But it's not just that. It's the decision to start the a team against El Salvador and do it in, I think what are very risky conditions, right? If somebody had gotten hurt, Greg berhalter probably would have been in for some criticism. That was a risk there to play that team in those circumstances. But he got some real important answers on some guys. And so I think we have to give him a lot of credit hurt. In the past, when you've criticized this team for being soft, you've left it at the manager's feed and not the player's feet. So I think we got to give berhalter some credit for allowing this group to prove that they're not soft in your eyes. Yeah, I never said he didn't deserve credit. I mean, you actually write about the window while we were criticizing Tata martino in Mexico for allowing their a teamers to go off on vacation. Here is Greg breal just saying Christian Pulisic. I know that there's a lot of uncertainty for you. You know it's been a long season, but go play in Scotland. Him saying Weston McKinney, I know you're coming back from injury and juveniles may not want you playing in this type of game, but go out there and I want to see what it's like for you. So yeah, a lot of credit to Greg berhalter for sticking to his guns and playing the way he did or playing the lineup that he did. I don't think we've ever lacked criticizing or giving credit here. Okay. All right, speaking of Greg berhalter, we heard some of his post match comments, but not all of them. He had some very interesting ones about Haji Wright, who got the start against El Salvador. Let's listen in. You know, John, it's always difficult when players get an opportunity and don't fully capitalize on it. It's not nice for a coach. It's not nice for the players, not nice for the group. We're all rooting for Haji to be a force. We purposely played more direct in the first half because we thought he could be the force that would unsettle them. And it just wasn't his night tonight. And it doesn't rule him out for anything in the future. We don't work like that. Now it's about him going back to his club and continue to score goals and do his thing. "Time to get down to business understand hopefully try to win at least a trophy this year because that's the whole reason why I stayed and I think the whole team not just me is really motivated to do that. Take us into the locker room a little bit. We talked to Robin Frazier a ton in his time around MLS. I don't think he likes us as much as he likes the people on the same. So he's a little guarded sometimes with us. Sometimes opens up, but what's he like as a coach? What's the atmosphere that he sets? How is it that he interacts with all of you guys? Yeah, I mean, off the field he's a very humble quiet guy, modest he's easy to talk to when you're having a conversation that's not soccer. But I mean, when he comes down to business, he's really serious. And I think the biggest thing with us is that we watch a ton of video. It's the most video that I've watched with probably any coach. I mean Greg berhalter was up there with, you know, being really detail oriented, but Robin, it's almost every single day. And that's kind of his interaction with players is he kind of want to while you're here. You're really focused in and kind of you know, trying to do your job and while you're in training, your mindset is just completely focused on training, but once you're away from it, you can kind of go enjoy yourself. And I think that's why a lot of guys have found this place as a home that they like because I think they know that they can come in and concentrate for a bit and then also just go live there their life once it's outside a soccer. So I think there's a level of comfort here between the team and I think that's what has brought us together as a team is we all feel so close and bought it together while we're here. And then we go live our lives outside of it. Seems like the whole process is designed to get the most out of you. But i i love this. These are the little offseason things that i see that. I'm god i can't wait to see the union where this kid. Well, I would say he's definitely more of the modern fullback that we see in today's game. Is An attacking player first and foremost. DSP little slow to react to. That very quick very good one on one defender, but his strongest traits are pushing forward. With the ball crossings desk. Space he's not afraid to be creative. He's not afraid to try different things. Back so Yeah he he plays with the mindset of attacking player who is looking to create goals. And get a sense of the hype around surging your desk. How good is this dude expected to be? Yeah I mean I think there are a lot of hopes for what he can be you know Barcelona spending twenty, five, million euros to sign him that puts a a heavy amount of expectation on Sergio Desk I mean this is not a taking a flyer on a guy paying five million euros form and hoping he works out and develops know when that kind of money is being spent. The expectation is that you come in and you contribute right away. And in the case of Sergio that means producing assists, it means holding your own in the Champions League and I think there is a lot of belief that he can be that type of player I mean I think there's going to be a huge spotlight on that club this year because it could potentially be Messier's final season at Barcelona, and so the hope that club is that they can win Champions League maybe do something to convince messy to stay and that's what you're walking into. If you're Sergio Desk and Paul, what's your sense of Sergio personality what's he like he comes across as kind of a quiet kid? I believed in myself. So that's like the reason I get focused and I played really well and this you know he. Is Very Smart. He certainly is not afraid to Kinda give his analysis of his teams and where he fits in the and the last two minutes I just made a unbelievable mistake and that's What I learned from it. But. What's interesting is when you talk to other people about him, what's he like kind of away from the media spotlight were you probably get a better idea of his personality? It seems like he is. I guess the best way to put as maybe like an interesting dude, like he you know he kind of goes to the beat of his own drum. He's got a kind of a bright personality and we're starting to see little bits of that I think as he grows comfortable with the spotlight that's on him. Now, we'll you've been digging into Sergio rise to stardom including speaking with some of his former youth coaches in the Netherlands. Tell us a little about the path he's followed. Well, he was signed with his academy from a local club. At. Quite a young age and I think what's interesting is At I xe the expectation when you go to a club like that and you go into an academy like that is immediately, how is he gonNA fit in as a professional and I think there were some concerns about whether or not Sergio had the discipline to succeed. As a professional you saw that topic come up with a number of his youth coaches at I you. Was He going to take things seriously enough. Well, what were some of the things that he was doing that we're raising red flags among some of these youth coaches? Well, they vocalise some of them and they didn't they hinted at others. There's little things like Sergio not showing up to school. Where was his focus and and having to sit down and have talks about professionalism and you can interpret it however many ways you want is showing up the training on time is he going and doing all the individual work that needs to be done mainly they wanted him to understand that you know. Yes, football is fun. Yes. There is the enjoyment part of it right but. If, you're going to make it at a club like I asked at a certain point you have to start treating it like a job as well, and for as much as some coaches were giving him those red flags there were also coaches who were saying, no, this kid has it. He has something and what you what you need to interpret is, yes, his personality might be. A little different. He might not fit perfectly in the box that you want, but he wants to be successful. He wants to get better and those are the coaches that recognize that in him and worked to kind of harness it, and once that happened once there was a little bit of belief behind Sergio Dust that self-motivation has has led him to a really quick sent from. The U Twenty World Cup into access first team, and then a year later into the senior national team for the US and onto Barcelona. So break this down for us. Paul Sergio grew up in the Netherlands. But he's been playing with US national teams. How exactly has that worked? So Sergio comes from a military US military family his father was a soldier who was stationed overseas. As Mother's Dutch and so he was born in Holland and and was raised there and even the Dutch national team he never got an invite to the youth national teams in Holland every time before the less round, the real real influence I didn't make you know and. Then, I was like. And he was discovered by the US soccer on accident, a US youth national team coach Dave Vandenberg, a former player, and he reached out to his club actually about another player. Another American at I ax to check in and he said as as you tend to do in scouting or journalism. Hey are there any other players I should be aware of and to coach that the actually we have another player here with American passport is name, Mr Gino, desk, and then My Dad told me like you also have American best and people saying to my dad so he can also play for the American. So when they brought through genius destined to camp, they were watching very closely not just his soccer ability but how would he mesh with the group and they said it took just one training session to see the quality that Sergio desk had. But what they were really happy with was how quickly he bonded with the Group of players and they felt like he really gained a lot from the group in connecting to his American. Identity I felt home over there a little bit because they I mean in the national team because they helped me all the time and they give me chances. This. That's the main thing I guess I would say also I think it's worth noting that the connection between us soccer at the time general manager now technical director Ernie Stewart and Sergio Desks Ernie Stewart likes or. Has a father who is in the military a Dutch mother grew up in Holland and when the US was trying to finalize Gino desks international recruitment, Ernie Stewart and Gregg Berhalter flew to Holland sat with Sergio and his father had a meal watched her play Champions League and spoke about their vision and I think it probably helped Sergio desk to see somebody who grew up very similar to him very similar background who played in multiple world cups more than one hundred caps for the US national team and Through seeing Ernie Stewart's accomplishments saw what he could accomplish with the US i. felt like my feelings were telling me like. My heart told me US wants the best option for you. It's not like. That I don't like the Netherlands. But yeah. In life you have to make decisions on. It's easy. You know. Also, we should note that that loyalty that, US, national team showed him, and that belief in the positive reinforcement he was getting with the US and being to Seventeen World Cup team u twenty. World Cup team led him to choose the United States senior national team overhaul, and which was recruiting and Windsor Genius talked about that decision. He talked about the fact that he had been a part of the teams plan for a long time. They had showed him their vision for what he was going to be in the future they believed in him and he hadn't seen anything from Holland until he broke into the first team and. So I think.
