"The heritage of our community and insurance co. g on hunting hot hot and claude. Oh there you go okay camp camp you know what talking about the heritage in that area. I wanna backup for those who've been listening and they're like what in the world is white. Sulphur springs you. Know you may have heard. I think the biggest landmark there greenbrier. Of course the greenbrier resort and it goes back longtime. I'm sure all you knew this as well but long before the government declassified the bunker you know i knew about it there my mom had told me about you know growing up there and when they were building the bacher. This is a fun story. My uncle had been working there working downtown and was telling everybody they're building a bunker under the greenbriar but uncle was known to be a little off. His rocker is the technical term there so no one believed him to it. But anyhow as telling me. I need to shut my face. Some do that and wrap up. You're listening to the beer. Guy's radio.

"Have to make sure that the weather's right in that if if superintendent doesn't is worried about the feels being severely damaged than we relocated to game or the event down to the artificial. This has been great any any future plans any future. Nfl teams locked in you. I don't know the schedule for twenty twenty two yet. Any future goals for this performance center. Sure the the goal is to get another team for training came. So we're this hit this for next starting next year to use it for the month long training camp so we're in talks with a few teams there so and that again is who's uh scheduled comes out. You want to be i. we wanna be. We want to be in the position. Where the teams are requesting the nfl to schedule them back to back east coast games. Yeah i don't even know that. Is that happened just organically. I think the owners probably request. I think can request. I don't know the official causes. But i i do think you can request if you have to east coast games under schedule that that they be back to back because i think again. I don't know this for certain but the competition committee realize that stuff to go. he's competitive. There was there wasn't good stats there for several years of west coast teams playing a one star on sunday. Didn't have the best record. And so i think when they can make those combinations they do. Yeah and then with the forty niners you know. They soon have good experience. I think jed york the owner actually tweeted something out so you would think a they would get that back toback situation again in these next year and they wanna come here no reason to think that they would we. We've gotten incredible relationship with them. They are a first class organization from top to bottom. They are an absolute joy to have here. Are staff members. Love having them here they are. They are i well. I don't like him this week. They're playing my packers last week when it was painful. Yeah that was tough week. I had all week. They knew an eagles fan. Oh all got where my my forty niners had the flags wine and one o'clock sunday do black well. This has been great greg. anything else. Want to add about this incredible center that I'm lucky enough to take a tour of now after we're done love the show. You just appreciate opportunity to be with the and any questions. Any of your listeners had feel to reach out to. Yeah and it's fascinating. I wanted to do this while. I'm here because it did. Create a lot intrigue not the negativity about the injuries. But just wow forty years of doing this and how cool germ and just i. I'm aware because i grew up coming here with my family vacation technique places but i never in my childhood envisioned this says quote unquote training camp for nfl teams. So it's quite so. It all started with sean. He was the one that had the vision called us. And here we are greg. Thanks for being on the podcasts. Very informative and i'm sure this alumnus. You hope you enjoyed that. I know there's a lot of stuff out there that greg talked about about the greenbriar and Something that it was causing injuries even though teams game in there with injuries he answered it..

"What an incredible experience. Our son was an intern with them and seeing all these players around the hotel in the middle of kobe mixing and they were all kind of bubbled. Here for the three weeks How did that one come about so that came about. We're very well connected in the tennis industry. And so one of our tents rose and some of our sporting club members are very closely knit with the tennis community. And they knew they wanted to to start an end their season in the same facility and really they were one of the first things to create a bubble and they love the facility. They love the revival. Because we're eleven thousand acres were were in white. Sulphur springs west virginia And so they were able to create that bubble and keep everybody in day. One person the bubble and so it was a tremendous success. It was it proved a lot of the other leagues larger leagues. It can be done and it can be done safely and so we were thrilled to be apartment and that was right after we reopened. Aren't sure how our business gonna return. And so it was the perfect sorta way to to dip our toes back into a big group And then we were very fortunate because our leisure guests came back extremely quickly so it was a perfect balance of of group leisure and the media exposure at world team. Tennis had far more exposure on a national scale than than. I realize yeah a lot of realizing so we were on. Cbs sports on espn. It was fantastic event and really got us back into doom. What we do that's welcoming guests or owner is a huge sports. He's the governor is gigantic. Sports fans have anything to do with sports He is all ford. And he's he's the coach of the girls. The local girls varsity basketball team. And that's why any of these opportunities come up. He's he's all. Yeah as a sports fan myself. It's fun to be portable. Yeah and what about other sports. I mean i know. Last year is the year the bubble we saw disney host the nba and wnba. In bradenton. i believe and have you reached out is is it..

"And so they don't put as many parameters on on where they can go when they can be there and so it's their off off the so they can play golf on them. Go spa surround. The i mean. They're they're using the resorts amenities and ownership and coaches coached but leadership and they're using the amenities as well golfers. Have you seen some interesting golfers. We get a good amount of clubs shift ahead of their arrival and we ship six centreback and again training camp not as much during the week. There there's several guys on each team that we had that that are pretty passionate offers and they'll take advantage of of our class courses. Here any anecdotes you talked about ballot check shanahan peyton. Any you know any Anything that stands out from all these experiences little little nuggets from each team. I'm just amazed as a huge nfl. And i'm just amazed at how every different every team behaves very differently. They all need the same things. But there's few things that that some of them want differently than the others so that's been amazing and they really do seem to take the personality of head coach. More serious coached the more serious. The week is and their visit here and so that's been interesting to see how again they all the field. They need the training equipment on the food. But it's the the other time that here that has been interesting to see how it's used. There was an article last week about the forty niners being here at the headline not. The article seemed indicate that the injuries you know the forty niners were having all these injuries a year ago between the jets and giants games and then they come in here last week with injuries from the detroit game going into philadelphia As you know that headline sort indicate somehow the green bar at some sure part in the injuries but of course that was debunked by a lot of people saying that we appreciate all the comments that followed that that headline we were. We were a little disappointed in the headline ally little inappropriate. Just because it was well documented that these injuries occurred the game to game all right so we helped them get better..

"Furlong must have been quite a cost and when you bring up cost. I also think about the cost for the teams and the cost of having the teams. Are you having the teams at the expense of not having other guests in in the property in the resort. And you know you. You don't have to tell me the exact number is it. A is it a financial gain free as a financial loss is not not important in terms of what you get out of bringing these teams in publicity. It's sure so we just any business. Baton evaluates the pnl of each piece of business and so we look at it we also put a huge value on the marketing side of the the amount of media the amount of press we get when a team is here is stuff to put an exact dollar amount on it but it's a it's a huge amount. The nfl is a marketing machine. And and we love being part of that and so it may displace a few of our leisure guests are normal corporate association groups but the press that we get out of it far outweighs any of that displacement and so would never team calls we over them competitive pricing similar to what we offer any other corporate association group. They're they're doing their meals doing everything. So it's it's a. It's it's definitely a win win a lot of the teams that come. Don't wanna go back west coast and they wanna stay east coast. They view it as as a huge benefit. One that ought to pay for the flight back in back. East coast post the savings on their body with the time adjustments time changes. That's that's been keen as teams become more in tune and good more team with their bodies. There there's more and more research showing that's beneficial to stay in the same time zone have approved. I know so well with these guys can eat. You have separate dining for them do you actually. For lack of better words sequester the teams in a different parts of the hotel than the normal resort or so so the resort has seven hundred total rooms and teams on average. Need about two hundred rooms tonight and so we try to. We have the west. Virginia winning the resort where we put the players high security individuals that because we can a little bit more of an isolated area of the building. And so i will put them there and then the meals. Each team's done the meals a little bit differently and so they typically eat breakfast lunch dinner and they call it a snack at nine o'clock at night. It's anybody else. It's dinner higher members. They so some of them will do some of those meals over here sports before we center. We'll do them at at the building in the building at the resort it really just depends on their scheduling which day of the week where they are with their off days and that kind of thing and in terms of them quote unquote mixing with the regular resort. Guests is that is that. Just determined by their coaches in their leadership whether they want to integrate or do they sort of stay apart and that's an interesting to see how each organizations a little bit different When they're here for training camp it's much more of a business trip. It seems like you've got ninety percent of the guys trying to make the team. The timber center are said. They're not you know they're not going get but the rest of it's a business trip and they're they're here to to make the team and make sure on the roster when they're here during back to back east coast games. It's a little bit more casual. These are grown men. these are adults in so takeout. Cova did all those restrictions that we had last year and this year it becomes a little bit more flexible. They'd have their off days here just like they would at home..

"Andrew's beer and your philly guy right. You've heard me on. Wip with angelo cussons in the morning. And listen to on my drive in drive home. So i'm a four four guy huge especially birds. Yeah so we can of the birds at forty nine. Were here preparing for them last week. So let's go back. How how did the sports performance center. Which is this magnificent property right here at the bar. Come to be too long ago. The whole history. Sure so it's interesting. Because sean payton was Was here one summer. Caddying for one of his best friends. Ryan palmer on. Bj tour and so we've starting two thousand ten. We hosted a pj golf tournament. And so two thousand thirteen he came ryan palmer's caddy couldn't caddied so he asked his friend sean to come coach. Peyton was here for a week in july and just fell in love with the surroundings climate hospitality and really the state of west virginia. So a couple of weeks ago by the saints call us and say would you be interested in hosting training camp and we were like. We're always interested in interesting is but we don't have any feels. I don't know where you would practice. And he said all. We'll figure all that out later and so couple of more phone calls and eventually are billionaire. Owner got in touch with their billionaire. Owner mr bendtsen and they figured it out and a couple of months later. We had three beautiful. Nfl caliber football fields. Sixty thousand square foot sports performance center in now two thousand thirteen so that was the summer of two thousand thirteen so we welcome the saints for the first three years of training camp in two thousand fourteen. The saints were here for three years for their month. Long training camp and then after that the houston texans were here for two years and then new england patriots have been here twice to joint practices. Once the saints with the texans then. The cardinals were ear in between back to back. East coast games and then Forty niners the last two years of come for to back east coast games. And how did this become a thing with different. Teams is the saints experience becoming while known around league. And how good it was. And sean payton talking to his colleagues and so we've had enough teams here over enough years and there's a lot of movement in the nfl with coaches and assistance and players. That i believe. I don't know for back but i believe there's at least one person on every staff that has come here for for either training. Camp were a week long. Stay in the season so that word just spread throughout the nfl We've we've done some aggressive prospecting every all thirty two. Gm's and coaches director of ops director travel every year and so keep them up to date on what's going on and then today that the schedule comes out. I'm calling every west coast team that has backed by goes games and trying to get them to to say you're and so but again it's the experience is been great and that's what spreads amongst the other coaches in a lot of. I mean bill check being here twice to practice two different teams that brings a lot of credibility if if the patriots are willing to come here twice over a couple of different years their experience must be good and so a lot of a lot of teams that i talked to are interested in and that and again knowing.
Raheem Mostert Injury Update: 49ers Running Back Exits vs. Lions With Knee Injury
"He most hurt left the game early for the forty niners as well. It's really just so unfortunate remo serves been plagued by injuries For for years now and and yesterday was no different left. The game early second quarter. I believe only had to What was it to to carries ers only two fantasy points for you. All we knew was that it was his knee kyle. Shanahan said after the game that he was going to get his knee further evaluated when they got to greenbrier. Those who aren't aware forty niners have a game in east coast. They are going to greenbrier and west. Virginia staying there this week for practice so he was expected to give further evaluated when they got there last night. Once we have those results will share them. Shanahan did say he did not He heard that they did not believe it was an acl so they thought that was encouraging but nothing further specific as of yet

"My to my favorite place in this range earned. Read the top of the range here. I mean i'm in the tank for scottish suppler. I think he's i think he's going to break out. Like i just love his game like gains a tonnage strokes off the tee decent iron player. You know hit the ball fine. Td last week. I think one thing. I'm a little concerned with as he doesn't tend to put well on bent grass. He didn't put while last week. I'm hoping that maybe progress is a little bit towards you know the higher into that and but if you look at all the places like contended like it's a lot of like big boy big than golf courses you know so i like shuffler. I'm going back to the matsuyama. He played a lot better when he showed he really shot himself from the foot at liberty national but he plays fayza pretty well. He plays quail hollow wealth. Plays a lot of these big boy. Golf courses really. Well i mean there's there's no doubting his consistency. td green. He actually pretty well last week on the bent grass maybe and keep that momentum going this week satellite him and then you know some j. ends kinda playing pretty good lately and he's been getting better every single week often like he's like i remember back around. The masters was gained a ton of strokes off the tee. Like getting in and then the subside. A little bit now like he's off fatigue game is back his irons. He's not putting well lately. I think maybe that's going to come back a little bit. So i kinda got a feel about sunjay. And then i mean i can make a case for premiums anyone in this range so but i think i'm gonna say walking and i was on him last week and i think maybe i was trying to make him be something that he isn't and i like the player i believe in this town. He gains a lot off the tee. He's long so that's great. But i don't know there's just something missing to his game like he doesn't seem like he like contends at these like big boy golf courses and i did see something today that somebody liked him and the ease the justify that his low wind came around this area of the country. He wanted the green bar. Well the two hundred. Thirty one miles from case bali and I mean if you want to take that. I mean murphy villages closer to the greenbrier and sedgefield is closer greenbrier green bars and takes you know somebody at those places so i think this like anytime. I see like a narrative like that. I just wanna faded immediately. So i you know sorry that someone made a really argument against you walking neiman. But because of that. You're not gonna do. "They come in as second in conference. Usa in the preseason and the prediction and of course then you have newcomer. Can't wait to see what they offer what they bring into conference. Usa but coastal carolina. Pick fourth in the standings as far as teams that are going to contend for the championship. But it's a unanimous decision. Hear the thundering herd pick to win conference usa and soccer once again. And that's what you want. You wanna see that you wanna see conference usa. Do that have a team like marshall that can really come in. And maybe set the standard high because charlotte's second kentucky's third and then you got newcomer coastal carolina coming in the fourth and then the florida schools f. i you. Fau fifth and six in the poll south carolina. It comes in at seven old dominion eighth and uab might be the pick. The wind conference usa in football but as far as men's soccer uab picked night. But still you look at those top four teams. Any one of those top. Four teams can win conference. Usa marshall charlotte kentucky coastal carolina. And maybe you get challenge from fifa you as well but you look at this league. And it's why marshall's having success recruiting to this league because the top teams and you bring in a new team like oh carolina and then you bring in west. Virginia you're going to have probably one of the strongest soccer conferences in ncwa and right now marshals on top martial on top of the world right now. Top ranked defending national champion more honors coming to the thundering heard today other news. You've been following the story. Greenbrier county the school board putting it off and finally making the decision today. Jim justice already girls coach wanted to be the boys coach. He wanted to be the next boys basketball coach at greenbriar east high school and this has been decisive or more or less divisive. Yeah this has been divisive. As far as what people in greenbrier county think so the vote goes today. Three two and so jim justice suffering defeat. He is not going to be the next boys basketball coach at greenbrier highschool greenberg east and even had basketball players pleading with the board and that something to be you have players coming in and said look. We don't want him as our coach. We want someone who's going to put a full-time effort into the job. We come in as players and we put in a fulltime job. We put everything we have. We want to coach going to do the same now. The quote today as some students were there and john gabbert. Who's a junior. He said we deserve a fulltime basketball coach coach. That comes to all practices. Not only games. We want someone who is going to care for us. We want someone who is going to put as much hard work and dedication as we do every day. He said that this reflected the desires of his teammates. So he's spokesman for the team so the governor of course will probably have things say things he's going to do because he thinks he's the best candidate and you gotta listen to these kids if the kids say look. We don't want him. Because we want someone who's going to be here full-time. We want a fulltime head coach. We don't want someone who's just gonna show up for games and coaches and justice said he. He relies on his assistant coaches. And that's fine if it works for the girls team. You're the current coach there. That's fine you can't really change that but do you think. The governor of the state of west virginia has time to be a basketball coach and.

"Let's get back to joaquin neiman. Did was there. Anyone who would have been the person that you would have been the most nervous to be around either to have played with or walk by on the range. Or if they're watching you hit balls on the range you'd have been nervous to be around. Who someone that that at that age would have major nervous riley. Yeah probably playing around here. I think i think the first time i saw was the moriarty was late north third or four tournament which Experience i remember. I was playing great. I was almost the last ruben sunday. I mean i could hear that. There was not only ten groups front but i could hear everything that's note and the people following him by think. Sergio helped me a lot to like. Get that pressure off. You know like lie. Know him. Before i turn pro. I will to play with him before on unknown how good they are also know that i can like i can be here. You know. I was actually at that memorial that year and i remember watching. Ut off on the tenth hole once. i'd never seen you hit a ball in person and it just stuck out to me immediately and do on tv. And i'm sure you hear a lot about how low you hit the ball and i'm just curious. Has that always been the case. And is that something that you know you. You were aware of growing up or any special reason. Why would hit the ball. Low and chile. Or do you think about that at all non. It was is fine because at the beginning that league union a lot of confidence. When i'm like a little bit nebulous son. I need to hit the way. I'll heed that show on a new. I remember when i start being professional a using. That showed that now during the time. Yeah i've been using it less. I'd i'd be using more hydro. I'm just trying to hit farther on. May i have that show that. I feel really confident when a heated unease yummies late may go to That's what i was. I was curious. And i was looking back at the highlights from when you won at greenbrier every now and then that forty one foot apex driver shot comes out and i was. I was just interesting because of how different the game appear the direction. The game appears to be heading seems to be you know track man. Everyone's telling you hit it high. Hit hi hi. I'm wondering if you know as you were transitioning from amador into pareo if anybody came along and said hey you could hit it this much further if you hit it higher or but i think what you just said though it's interesting how you've you've prioritized accuracy. But i'm wondering if if that has evolved at all over the years. I remember when i played. Infirm courses The bogus along. Way i Relate to two seventy and he runs it. Depends on the fairway ferry. Sometimes when their firm for example greenbrier they allowed so sometimes is not that short by yemi normally. I've been preferring. yes More with hydro. Sometimes i got bunkers around when he died. I'm like are now monday. Just gonna he'd been the hydro and the beginning. I was really. I don't know if i was a little bit more secure or no but early. I prefer yesterday that low one being more coffee when the on knowing that i'm gonna hit the airway but now he's more like a feel like i feel better on the course right now and i just. I just thought that showed that like more. And he's been pretty good lately. So i like it do you feel. Where do you feel most comfortable. Like firm and fast conditions or when when it softer yeah. I like away. When when he's firm. I know that. I don't hear really really high with the also with the iron. So it is hard to me to stub on own the green when i when i'm lega 5-iron their firm 'cause i don't get it like really high but yeah i mean like bain with firm conditions. I think is is more fun on unb lehner green or heating widgets from the hundred twenty yards is is is good to see that like bouncing around the great in those more fun. Yeah i mean. I find it interesting you know. Obviously when it's firm your drivers going to run out a lot more but like you said it's hard to hold greens. If you hit it low and i i wanna talk a little about royal melbourne in the president's cup. You know you have it's interesting. You didn't have the most success at royal melbourne yet at the same time at olympia fields this year which was very firm and fast you finish third. And i'm i wanna talk a lot about role melvin. But first off. I would say. Did you learn anything in particular from that week. That helped you in later situations when it is going to be firm and fast. Yeah more than of course it was more like the atmosphere. Unlike the like getting that amount of pressure it was one of those way i mean the whole way was really intense. On the course roy ever was unbelievable. I mean i think he's one of my favorite right now. Unease eighty s a lot of strategy. I remember ernie was standing us. They don't in many drivers. You gotta The ball on the right side than it was more. Legacy smart play yet was different course. i remember in chicago Driver everywhere every bunker was laid three or three. Oh five three. Thank ari so i was trying to cater scarlet side. Ken he was going straight. You which is which was really good that we

What did you spend your time doing? Besides grinded on football? Anything at all to Greenbrier? You know, just looking around. You know, it's a very is a very, a unique place. So I was just trying to take it out and then take pictures, You know, spend Paloma cremate, you know, just get a little bit of on time with them. As far as that aspect, you know, then again, just just just walking into the moment and just just living in the moment at that time, you know, obviously I was gonna have a bigger role that week, so just enjoying the atmosphere, man in enjoying the calm and in my teammates, So it was a great leap for me. Yeah, I used to play a lot. But I would just, you know, get angry and all that. And I was like, Yeah, I don't need it. You know that's going on. But I was just not that being a part of it for so long that there were the who left greenbrier and went to. Places like chem. So High School, which is a public school. So obviously there backslid and and in Satan Sperber 'cause they Lafayette Christian heading go to Public School or you know the public school kids that came in to greenbrier. The only reason they came in was the birth expelled from private public school or they're really good at baseball those the two reasons they came to us. But that that duality it interesting..

Close father son relationship the new owner he had whatever it looked like. So figuring out as I go with that actually looks like. I was going to ask if. I remembered I believe you saying when I you know way back when I when when you're my teacher I, remember you talking about your father being out of the picture and I believe you mentioned him being dead You said, he passed when you were fifteen. So obviously, by the time you're in your mid twenties you've had some time to think about all that you one memory I think you'll appreciate is re I think you. Read lyrics and then played the song. Of Mike and the mechanics, the living years. Do you remember the Song Oh Gosh I remember that. Yeah. It's a do remember that. Why did do that song? And it's a really good song. I you know. Allowed to do that at greenbrier. Close the door. Yeah. I can only imagine that. that was against the rules but. That's I. Tennys Sandgren on rocking and rolling onward
"Alright tennis sang welcome to the podcast today I'm doing well Nina. Thank you. We're here at the greenbrier in West. Virginia, how has your experience been so far with World Team? Tennis? It's been great. To. Get Out of the House and. Compete play tennis. Due to. Be Around People to a degree, which is nice and Enjoy playing cordon being the team environment does it feel unusual on strange naturally playing back to back to back matches with some kind of level of consistency in Structure Yeah remembering. What it's like to feel hurt. After like three or four or five days playing in Rhode some of the older injuries. Sovi stuff that POPs up. STARTS POPPING UP. It's like Oh. Yeah. I remember you were. been there in the last few months but you're back it's nice to see you again. Sore accuser sore shoulder there you're Let's Kinda just more familiar than not. It's nice. Guy. Getting a rhythm actually played. Feel like you're finding feet. Tennis in pretty good as far and having some kind of level of structure of like you know the next two weeks or three weeks of the season. You're you're playing tennis and it's going to count for something right? Right EXAC, which feels familiar versus. You've got two or three weeks, two or three months ahead of you and you're like I don't know what I'm doing just practice. I guess you know it's it's it's nice to have that sort of structure that hasn't been the case thus law when the shutdown happened, where were Indian Wells or at home, and how did you react to it because initially I know for me I didn't think it was going to be very long. I was I was in malls Things started cancelling and. I thought that things we're GONNA get cancer for a little while immediately. So frustrated reminds like tournaments going on per usual. no. Definitely not. So it's Kinda Bizarre I. Don't think anybody really knew how to plan. The deal is GONNA be knowledge. Really I don't think anybody who's alive is this who have pandemic thus far On New with people Handled it well, I thought about buying a bike and biking home from. from California crossed my mind. Actually I, I have nothing to do for the next. Two months. I knew it like within the first day of cancelling I'm like, what am I gonNa do for the next forever. So I thought about doing that night I didn't because that would have been crazy for me. Would you put your bags? Ship them. By call. And vicompte. Do, you bike a lot normal life. Okay Just silently confronting the try. But you can try all kinds of stuff knowing at that point you're you only played it knows me four months but did you try anything else? Knew that was different for you that maybe is out of character when you're usually on tour grinding. Now try anything different to be honest. I just got better at drums a little bit and let stop the smallest margin veteran drums and basically stay the same everything else you deflect tunes until. I could go to sleep wake up and do the same days. Did you feel any like like about like when you're GonNa get back or did you kind of enjoy having a of a break? I would not use the word enjoy Also having Zayed's Elon we're back she's like. Oh, just feeling filling days. It's difficult because you can't plan anything. You can't be like why can't play tennis but I'M GONNA go do. XYZ and. have another purpose in life to go do something. Purpose nothing to really accomplish. During the fact that everything shutdown. Now do. and. Maybe get a glimpse of would be like to retire just like like sixty retired like K now.
Patrick Mouratoglou and Andrea Leand
"Everyone John Worth I'm here is this with sports illustrated tennis podcast. Sweet. We have two guests, I. We talk with Patrick Rata Glue who of course wears many hats in tennis keeps the Tennis Miller's busy. He's a broadcaster he's a coach. He's a promoter Today we talked to him in two capacities. We talk about the the ultimate tennis showdown that he ran over the past several weeks. This was an attempt by Patrick to speed up tennis, make it faster younger draw a new audience. We talk about what worked what didn't we spoke with him in June and he invited us sort of wouldn't he said we'll do a reassessment when we're done and see what we did well, and what we need to work on, and so we took him up on that so. A conversation about the UTSA ultimate showdown, and then we talk about Serena. Williams. Patrick of course has coached Serena for almost a decade now, and we talk about where she is what she'll need to do to Win that elusive twenty-fourth major He is about to leave niece for Lexington Kentucky from the south of France to the land, of Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul but Patrick. is going to meet up with Serena and couture in Lexington on her way to the US. Open to we talk a lot about Serena Williams how she's handling pressure, which he needs to do differently if she were to get to the final and her sort of general disposition during during the Cova crisis. So good conversation that we talked with Andrea Leeann Andras a former top fifteen player. A commentator she also wants did a brief stint as an agent She was at the Greenbrier for the final of World Team Tennessee other day she was sitting courtside. So we talk a bit about tennis and a bit about what the US Open is going to look like under this sort of quasi bubble configuration. So good to good conversation sort of looking back but also looking forward. So let's get started in the south of France with Patrick. So we spoke a few months ago before. Before your events began and we said we would we would check in and you were open to suggestion and you sort of you wanted to hear how this went. So you you tell me first. Grade yourself what what work well. Most of it. I to to see the reality of something you've you've imagined is is amazing. It's an incredible feeling. And it was it was really impressive to see those those great champions play. As. I mean something that was difficult to imagine like play formats. So different from tennis. The accepting to be in such in this comfort zone at the start because it's very different it's very stressful. Is Very difficult in terms of physical because you don't have a lot of time between the much less so he can't recover well. You're so much more stress. To see them go through all that. In a completely new environment All the things that go is the software we had to give up this machine we had to develop for the JEREM buyers day so. I mean. The whole feeling for me was just incredible. To be completely honest, you you you sound to me like you you've written a screenplay and then you've you've actually seen it performed as as a movie. Perfect who put it What did you think first of all, what what did you think of the level play I mean this this was a different environment for the players. They were also coming off along break. What did you think of quality of Tennessee? I think at the start of Utsa one level was really so-so. After a few weekends decided to play well. the one birds for example, who on your gs? One I think is level the first two weekends was wow. Was Far from very far and then. He took off and then he started to play a some of his best tennis I think. Why he won and the level of I think for UTA. Finals. Men and women I. Think the level was really good. I think it was very good tennis. That's I really enjoyed so much watching.
Interview With Sam Querrey And Eric Hutchinson
"Jon Wertheim here, and it's this week's. Illustrated Tennis podcast, we have two guests this week, a bonus guest in mainstream tennis player guest I. Am Query joins us. He is at the Greenbrier in West Virginia where he was laying world team tennis, and then as he will explain, is ready to embark on a full season starting in August, and we talked to him about what it's been like in the tennis bubble what his plans are for the rest of the season and sort of what the impact of this crazy and cratered year has been on a on a player of his status, his age. then. We have Eric Hutchinson. He's been on the show before Eric is a friend of big. Band of tennis and we talk a bit about what it's like to be a solo performer solar artists in the time of Cova probably not dissimilar to being a singles player. Eric has a new album class of one, thousand, nine, hundred, Eighty, eight. So we talk a bit about the process a bit about this sort of enforced break that we are all on. What the overlaps between music and tennis. All right now and some tennis chatter with a big tennis fan. So Sam Corey versed Haircut Simpson's second. Let's start in. West. Virginia. You're. In the bubble. I am. Tennis bubble. Let's let's start the president as a been. IT'S BEEN AWESOME You know for me I hadn't told a match in. Australian Open because my wife had a baby in February also I mean it's been five months. So I was excited to go I think all the players here are are really loving it and it's fine and we're finally back plans some competition and it's been great i. mean the I've never I don't know if you've ever been here. I. Know I haven't most you'll have in, but the resort is awesome So it is a bubble but at the same time you can there's golf fishing a bunch of restaurants you can go. You know skeet shooting eighteen. So you're you don't feel like you're just you're playing tennis and going back to your room. There's so much to do outside tennis, which is really made it fun for everyone because we are here for for three full weeks. And it's great to be back in absolute competition and. Going to court I mean it's going great so far. Some sounds like summer camp widsom competitive tennis thrown in. That's exactly what it feels like especially 'cause you're you're in the mountains that it's got a very, very much camp field. We're we're only doing this audio. I have to say you're your backdrop is tremendous. It looks like I mean you can kind of see like. Beautiful. No it's. It's this part of the I've never been here like I said it's I mean we went ATV and a few days ago, and you go up in the mountains in the views and. I. Spectacular. Doesn't sound like a bad way to spend July. What's been the? What about sort of the training, the nutrition, the hydration everything that comes with competitive playing how have you been able to deal with? With that. I, mean for me personally that's been that's been tough. The last like months to find the motivation for practice knowing or not knowing when we're GONNA. Start. You know you're kind of always like like apprenticed for like, wow not studying for I'll just as the next day and then I do the next day. So you know the last two months I haven't practicing hard but there's there's a practice shape and there's match shape. It's hard to really get back into your match shape until you play match. So. I'm doing the best. I can I've got Christian Cossio who travels with me as like a physio here with me. So we've been in the gym every day and working on my body. So physically actually feel fine because you know the team that I'm on I'm only playing singles every day. So I've literally got a thirty minute sets of five. And that's all the tennis I'm playing. So off days and even some matchdays I'm finding the other guys have updates in in an extra and extra practice and spending time in the gym and trying to make the most of it won't here. What's the level play? Overall? It's been high I. Mean I've played tennis twenty years because of the incentives this year online means finals, winters, It's intense. The teams are into it i. mean every you really feel like everyone's kind of laying it out there and It's made it better. You know I it's fun of the past but these incentives, I, it's it's up the level and there's a few more come on. There's a the teams kind of gathering around over a little bit more. So it's it's been really fun and I hope they continue to do is incentives can. Stays at this level. Yeah. I mean I was GONNA. Say, this is an interesting. You're a world team tennis veteran. This is unlike any other season you've had you just. League can. Use this crazy. This crazy three weeks as a springboard. I hope. So I. Mean Look at Fred Leading Eric Davidson behind it and they love tennis and You know they seem to have the financial backing to help move it forward in a good direction and Like the nave because of what happened, I mean the level and the talent they have this year is like no other year they've had world tanks. See this type of caliber players for a full season. So hopefully I mean I everyone that plays this year know especially those top players are GonNa say oh. My God this has been fun like this has been a great. Few weeks of practice, it's fun to be on a team and hopefully for the years moving forward, they're going to those top players GonNa WanNa do it again. Give, give us your your like top top four players of the season. If you're writing in your MVP, votes would be Gosh I would have to look at kind of like the the win loss record. you know Bethany Matic Santa's up there because she's just it seems like every mixed doubles in every doubles cheese. You know winning most of those. Sets. closers was up there until she got her she was just on fire. So I'm still GONNA put closers in the mix and then. Not so I'M GONNA try to I'm trying to think of a guy that's. been somewhat dominant. I can't tell I. Don't know I would need to look at like. He's been winning losing.
World TeamTennis CEO Carlos Silva
"Jon Wertheim here. Sports illustrated tennis podcast. Let us start by pausing for a second of silence to acknowledge that this ought to be the second week of Wimbledon one of the great pinnacles of the tennis calendar. We'll have to wait till next year, but meanwhile we have a good podcast this week. Our guest is Carlos, Silva Carlos as the CEO of World Team Tennis, which has perhaps you know we'll have a twenty twenty season a little bit different, but there will be a series of sixty three matches from July twelfth to August first at the greenbrier. The resort in West Virginia where all the players and all the teams will effectively be bubbled This is tennis's version of. Of what we're seeing, the NBA and this is a a prelude of sorts to the twenty twenty us open but world team. Tennis persists Carlos. Talks about where how and when you can see the matches, but they will be televised on a variety of networks and platforms, and World Team tennis stalwart in the sports since the early seventies will persist, so we talk with Carl's about world team tennis about staging an event amid corona where his league fits into this crazy mosaic, we call tennis and his experience with the sport as well as a former player so good conversation with a guy I've known for for a while. Here's Carlos Silva. Doing Oria I'm good I'm good. Things are good. Where are you? Where are we getting you? I'm in I live in Potomac outside of DC our. Okay so you're you're not far from. The greenbrier of these things go yet now I've been. I've been a few times over the last of the last few weeks, so yeah, it's like it's like three and a half hours from Dallas. All right, so you can, you can You can drive that. So! Yeah, let's start there I feel like. Talking about TV shows like a succession or Ozark but tell us about season forty five. What are we expecting a year? So. I mean as you know we. We have nine teams in season forty five. We had a new expansion team in Chicago there. Unfortunately, not comply in Chicago. Sloan Stevens is anchoring that team along with her coach out Murray. and. And so yeah, we're bringing everybody. We looked at a lot of different states John in Texas Florida. Nevada California, but But West? Virginia felt good It still feels good in the grand scheme of things was based on everything. That's happening, so we're out. We're bringing all night teams the Greenbrier, but we're GONNA. Play a complete season, and so the season will still be fourteen regular season, seven home and seven away. If you will, which will really only consists of. You, know whatever jersey, they're wearing that day home or away. On one court right at the writing a great low stadium that the Greenbrier Scott. I was GONNA. Say I. Commend You on a not picking Florida California. Texas Arizona, you. you picked well. I guess I think other sports are going to be looking at this as a real sort of. Canary in the coalmine to use the West Virginia and. Nobody I think whether it's dope, it or whether it's the Orlando in this NBA bubble. Do you feel pressured to sort of do this? Right for world team, but also I. Suspect a lot of other sports. Outlets are going to be looking at this. Yes we feel pressure? I mean in an I. Think you're right I. Don't think it's just tennis. I think it's sport. You know all of us. I mean the one thing you may have found it to John. I've found that over the last three months. Everyone's been very collegial in. In a weather we're on white. House calls whether we were all together. I mean I talked to Jay Monahan you know about a month ago before before their season started because they were GonNa go to tech says, and he gave me some great feedback on what they were doing with testing, and so yeah, we do we. We're We're trying to be very diligent and we're also trying every day to make sure that what we're doing. We're still analyzing it every. Every day, no as I told my team and we've told the players you know until August second when someone raises the King Trophy we gotta be diligent every day, so we've. We've even made a few adjustments as you know we're. We're going to have five up to five hundred fans in the stadium right halls, twenty, five hundred, and originally those fans were only required to have a temperature check, but about five days ago before everything a little bit. A little crazy over last five days we decided that we would add masks in for the fans as well and so all all. All the fans will also have mass in the stadium. And you know with the way we thought about that as you can always take the masks down at feel better, but better to be a little safer so Yeah, there's there's definitely a low pressure. I think we're up forward and I think we're going to show everyone how how we can be safe and be. Operationally smart every day. It's a five hundred fans as of today is the number you're working with. It is yeah. Yeah, and what? We got I don't know if you've ever been to that stadium, but it's a great little Horseshoe Horseshoe stadium around the court with a lower bowl at an upper bowl, and so the you'll either by a lower bowl, general admission, ticket or bowl, general admission ticket, and then every other rose blocked, and then the Oscars will social distance. Distance when you come into the stadium, so if you came John with your family, you'd be able to sit with your family. But if I came with my family, we'd sit together but I wouldn't be able to sit next to your family. We'd be six feet away and so and so that that works and we'd. We'd all at mass in the in the stance.
Christina McHale on stretching her comfort zone
"Everyone welcome for tennis. Dot Com podcast I'm your host Nina Pantic joined by my co host Irena. Falconi Hey, guys. How's it going? Our special guests is wgn. Pro, Christina McHale Christina Welcome. Thank. You guys so much for having me. We'd like to start with figuring out where in the world you are during this quarantine season, so tell us where you're at. So you always was been in Atlanta for the past two months. literally right after Indian Wells. That got cancelled I was like okay. Where am I going to go, so I went home for a couple days and then my sister was like. Why don't you come for a week? And literally just kept extending extending extending, and so we've been having a good time. Did you. Take your tennis rackets when you went down there. You know good thing I did because. Cracks debating it when I was home I was like. Is. It's just a week. Literally Bring Miranda is rumor sneakers. Now what? Y'All just let me just throw them on with me on the plane and thankfully. It's come in handy. What's been the hardest part for you? I think maybe it's probably the fact that the return keep sitting a stint extended, but what's been the biggest challenge? I think the biggest challenge has been just not knowing when we're GONNA. Come back, I think. You know normally we have. Something in mind that we're training for. We have a day I mean thankfully I. Do have World Team Tennis coming up and it looks like it's going to happen, so that has been able to help me figure out a time line just in terms of the toward the uncertainty of not knowing is is tough. So usually you talked to two different kinds of people in my opinion during this quarantine time you have the people that are like Oh my God. It's just a virus like it's no big deal. Totally be fine, and they have the other side of it. It's just like Oh, my Gosh! I can't be near people. I can't like Swat side. So where do you fall in that spectrum? I would say I'm somewhere in the middle I think definitely at the beginning of the quarantine I was like Oh. My God like. Don't we cannot leave if I want to go to the grocery store things like that and then slowly been getting more used to doing things especially here in Georgia things. Have you know we're one of the first states to open up so technically I? mean. We could go sit down at a restaurant. which we haven't done yet. I've been playing some tennis and stuff with my sister and Ryan but yeah slowly getting is funny like these things were all completely normal analogies. The thought of like sitting and eating at a restaurant is like scary, so. It feels crazy to think that you couldn't go to a restaurant or a bar or even tennis court, but you're getting some practice in and you have your sister. Luckily Lauren around and you have Ryan Harrison as you're hitting partner, right? Yeah. I'm pretty lucky to be quarantined with them because I've been. Able to hit with my sister Ann with Ryan sometimes, and then with my sister specially have been making her. Do all my work with me to keep me motivated. She's like ready for a comeback the tour she said. That she was ever really on the Torma she says she's ready to to make her debut. Yeah, I was actually talking about that with travel today. Just how just having someone there to kind of be there to kind of suffer with you throughout the workout just makes it easier, but that's awesome that you're going to be able to play world team, not everyone. Has that luxury I mean here. We have some exhibition kind of style tournaments that are going on, but yeah. I'm on the spectrum of I. Do not want to play those events. Just because there's no physios, you know there's a lot of stuff that you're just not. Not, really sure about so the fact that you're going to play world team tennis I mean it's something to look forward to Are you like excited to get back? Yeah, I'm really excited. And they just announced that it's going to be all in one place in West Virginia, the greenbrier resort, which I've heard really good things about sizing. That's great that rock and have to travel to several different cities. Once we get there. We'll stay there and yeah. I'm really excited because it's been like over two months since I last played a competitive match with like that environment is so fun, and like you're on a team, so it's. Serious because everyone wants to win, but at the same time you know you can enjoy with your teammates. I think it'll be a good like ease back into things. You've played world team tennis before pastor. Normal Times you, the aviators you played for the nearest empire played for the castles Segovia playing for this summer. I'm playing for the San. Diego aviators who I filled in for them four matches last year, and Ryan's actually on that team. So that'll be fun, we. Were teammates last year as well for four matches sell. Yeah, his letter pressure to cause isolated full season two years ago. and. You want to win so much for your team. Obviously, you guys playing college. Tennis would know that it's the different sort of. Pressure but I'm looking forward to it.
