Meantime, about two hours later, in the Austin neighborhood on the west side, two men killed and a woman critically wounded in a drive by shooting on Cicero avenue near Adams, police investigating both shootings. Walker Shaw and suburban Milwaukee will hold its annual Christmas parade tomorrow, the first in 6 people were killed when a man drove his SUV through the crowd at last year's parade. The parade coordinator, Janelle Andrews says several steps have been taken to increase security at the parade. They include more police, as well as a new route. We will still be going down Main Street in downtown Waukesha, but we have more of an enclosed perimeter and we're starting and ending the parade procession near the same area, whereas years passed, it was more of a one way parade route. Andrew says the new route will make it easier for police to keep the parade secure. She hopes the added security will ease the concerns of many people following what happened last year. "So I went there and that's actually where I started playing a ton of poker. I got on party poker and I was playing sit and grows and stuff like that while I studied super dry case law. So I was never into it. But it was the kind of thing where I'm like, okay, I enjoy school. Any subject, I'll be fine. I'll make sure I pass my classes and but still, if that should have been a clue right there when I used to like really enjoy school. And then when I was in law school, I was like, okay. Why did you choose law? Was it just kind of the path that you took her? It's tough. I just wasn't ready for the real world yet. I didn't have a job in mind that I was working toward. It was mostly like it was competitive. I wanted to get a's in college. It didn't matter what I enjoyed psychology, but not really enough to get a master's in it or anything. And I really didn't think. I was when I graduated I was 21. And I just wasn't thinking. I was just like, do I want to go back to the real world and try to get a job or do I want more years of this purgatory where you're just kind of, you know, you're just learning and hanging out with friends and stuff. And it was a snap decision. I was like, clearly, if I get a good enough rate on the good enough score on the LSAT, that's what I'm going to do. So I ended up getting a decent score and I ended up going to a good school, but at Michigan, I linked up with a bunch of friends who'd play every Wednesday and it was just so fulfilling for me. Being around tons of smart people, you don't feel special anymore. I didn't have that thing where I was like, oh, my identity is I get a's and I'm smart. I used to think I was so smart. I got into law school and I'm with these people and I'm like, oh, I have not. I just couldn't, I couldn't autopilot it and get good grades anymore. And some of these people just, they were smart, and they were incredibly hardworking. They were driven. They wanted to be a lawyer. They wanted to have this dream their whole lives. And I didn't. And that you can't, you can't fake that. Those are the people that would live in the library because they really wanted it. So for me, I started running marathons and I started getting to poker because that was what made me feel special. These are interests I have that those people don't. And so I really threw myself into those instead and I was like doing really well in our home game versus people who I consider to be smarter than me. So that was like very fulfilling for me to be like, all right, you guys got the a in that class, but like I'm crushing you up. Right. And so I started going to greektown casino, probably just once a week, I would go with a friend or two, and we'd go and see if we could play versus real players, which has hilarious now because I was like, they're way faker than the poker players that play now. Right, right, right. But yeah, I would win some money and it was just cool. I'm a reporting back home I call my mom and be like, I won $300 this casino playing poker. And she was like, okay, how's school though? And I'm like, exactly. And law class. Yeah, and that's how I felt though. I was like, I was not passionate about law. I was fine. I graduated, got a good job, did a decent job there..

"From what is it still. Is it still a a marriott. The harmony gardens in or whatever that is it's a maybe a courtyard courtyard. Yeah yeah one hundred and sixty six thousand square feet. I mean we've endless stories about greektown. How do you feel about that. As location dug in saying residential is the key residential may be the key I think where it's gonna come down to his. Who are those residents who wanna there. Now i know from you know living in the city as long as i did Greektown was not a place where you would really want to get an apartment. And that's not to say there weren't apartments there is you know as we know there's some properties there some developers we can name or not name. I got to say. I mean catalino says for how many years that you know you can live above a strip club with you know. Great sound from the strip club coming to your apartment. I know some. I know some friends who have lived there who have also lived above. Nikki's there's so there's apartments in greektown there may not be obvious But nobody who's lived. There has ever told me they liked living there partly because of the noise the transient nature of all the different people who are ingred town on any given night and i'm going to raise my hand here as a veteran young guy and say the greektown wasn't always all parking lots and parties like it used to actually be like a greek neighborhood with you know kind of i want to say it's transitional but housing immigrants and all of that kind of stuff and to me. The biggest problem with greektown is it. It's missing so many teeth. There's so many parking lots to loiter in. I don't like surface parking lots right in the middle of things anyway. Longtime listeners will know that. I feel like greektown. Should be like a cohesive area and block and have more structures things like that but greektown. It needs something. Is this et. I hate to use this word because but experiment and it'll be an interesting experiment to see because if anybody if anybody is built for this type of living it's young college just post college young professionals who don't mind the noise who actually like going out to the bars and restaurants in greektown who have that type of lifestyle. That's okay with that. I was there before i probably had in two thousand five i would have lived in greektown. Sounds fun at that age So i think that will. We'll find out here this. This will be quite an experiment to see. Because i do think greektown has all the amenities that you might look for in a neighborhood. Just not as obvious as some other places. Yeah you know. I will say this arm background. I kinda got the idea. They're going to be one hundred. Sixty five units about one hundred and fifty them are going to be apartments. But they're going to be twelve four sale condos and i get the sense those condos are going to be a very penny like i think. They're aiming for seven figures. I don't know if they'll get that. I'll just say that. I don't think you can get seven figures in that area. You're just not this. Isn't it's no. That's not brush park It's not cork town. It's not central business district So i i would not think that they can get that high of a price from but we'll see. I feel like this next. One caught a caught me by surprise as a transit watcher. But i'm kind of excited to see it. I would like to see more of it. There is a transit lane dedicated transit lane going into woodward kind of the area near district detroit. And then i heard that there was a little scuffle between spike and jay towers and i was wondering the entire thing the they said that there is a few over the years between jay and i because of a lot of people think that jay and i don't like each other and don now i'm wondering if maybe there's a feud between spike and j. because i love jay. What's what's the story here. Well if you're outside of detroit you're not familiar. Jay towers is a huge media personalities on tv and radio and more. He's all over. You could see them everywhere. And i invited jay dinner when i landed. I realized he was here in town as well covering the iheartradio music festival his for his stations. And i said you know what. Let's bring him in on my dinner reservation so i made reservations weeks ago. I invited him and then we get to the restaurant and he sneaked his credit card to the waiter and told the guy. Don't let him pay. I wanna pay as soon as we sat down. Motel sniped me. I was trying to treat him and he completely commandeered my reservation and paid for the whole party and it was an expensive place. I chose for dinner. So i gave the guy my credit card. He wouldn't use it. He returned it to me. He goes up rules other rules. And then these two were having words over the table me so uncomfortable way we eat so so the fight was over paying the bill and j wanted to pay you wanted to pay and then you guys got like the literally got physical so no it didn't get physical except for us arm wrestling with over the check by mojo. Does this all the time too. We go out. You're very generous. Which is nice except you. How do you treat someone dinner if they always pay. And i've like finally we get out where we can be social and and not at work function where i can treat j. He hasn't let me treat and it's like you know and then what happens. Is we go on the air few weeks later and you guys say spike never pays. He's cheap no. I try every time. I never get to. I even told the waiter said. Don't let him pay. He doesn't tip. He won't tip you and nj yelled. I tip fifty percent and see how spike is yelling right now. This is what was happening at the table. Me these two yahoos yelling over the bell invited you. How dare you do. Waiters or waitresses hate that. When when people do that when they are arguing fight over the bell exempt become like an issue. I would love to know. I never do god. Nobody wins. Slots isn't it a suckers game every now and then for j. Yeah every now. There's games where you play against yourself. There's games where you play against like the machines in the casino and then there's games where you play against the dealer and those are one of the games where you're basically playing against a machine that could downside whatever once hold on. Those arresting officers reporting that the officer was disruptive and making racial comments after they took him into custody. The local four defenders have the video of a detroit. Police officer getting into a fight in greek town at one thirty saturday morning. Now look at this that same officer only hours before graduated from the police academy saluting chief white getting his badge and posing for a photo with the chiefs and then getting this message department expects your bass this community expects your best and this community deserves your best. Let's take you through the video. The officer is on the left in the white t shirt. He's in his uniform pants. And you can see his new batch. Detroit officers jump in and the new officer continues to throw punches. Retired assistant detroit police. Chief steve dolan has never heard of a new officer being arrested by his own department. Hours after graduation happened. The officer was arrested for disorderly. Conduct not suspended with pay arresting. Officer's report that. Once the new officer was in jail. He was quote very disruptive using profanity and racial comments by the way. "Check this story out big story here in the detroit area saw it on the news last night a newly graduated detroit police officer just recently went through the academy and actually just graduated on. Saturday gets arrested by his new fellow. Cops on saturday night partying in a bar fight in downtown detroit in greek town but greektown is turned into free craziness right now. So he's a probationary detroit. Police officer he actually received his badge on friday and then was arrested in the fight on saturday after graduating on saturday and went out to the bars guerin his badge and gun which i think is a no no. Yeah not a good idea. This is a story i pulled from. Wd iv local four in detroit. New detroit police officer on the wrong side of the law. Just hours after graduating the academy topic our news at six that officer was one of several new recruits who took the oath to protect and serve and the graduation ceremony took place friday morning in downtown detroit. But want you to take a look at video from hours later. It shows the officer in a brawl in greek town. Defender lane joins us live with more on the officer. And what happened here. Sean will walk you through it. We have video the officer getting his badge from the chief on friday morning. Taking pictures with the cheat hours later. He was arrested by members of his own department. Those arresting officers reporting that the officer was disruptive and making racial comments after they took him into custody. Now look at this that same officer only hours before graduated from the police academy saluting chief white getting his badge and posing for a photo with the chiefs and then getting this message department expects your bass this community expects your best and this community deserves your best. He was quote very disruptive using profanity and racial comments. By the way. He's still has his pants on from from wearing his uniform. Job my opinion we asked the chief. Fifty officer will be fired immediately. This will not be a heavy left. We were to pull the video conduct this investigation and concluded seven days. Wow cheap added in a statement. I'm extremely disappointed in the behavior and actions of this probationary officer. There's more we're learning that arresting officers took out a ziplock bag of pills in the officers pants. They called them suspected narcotics and a report. We did check them out. They do not seem to be controlled substances at this point. I'm also told however internal investigators very interested in what his officers blood alcohol level was and time in greektown showing local. All right very upsetting. thank you imagine. I think I think by the end of it was $72 that I went, but it was It was over a period of time. I would throw a few bucks in the in the slot machine. We had one I don't know what you would call it sequence where I thought things were going really good. Where was probably $50 in this buffalo. I felt drawn to this buffalo, uh, slot machine that kept this very entertained for hours on end where it was like. Oh, you're winning. Get the bonus games. Those bonus games will get you. I don't think I'm I don't think I'm betting enough, though. Is that what it is? That gonna go, Max bet? Yeah, See, I'll put in 50 and then bet The minimum bet every time. No. But once the numbers start going up or flashing, and the noises start happening, Yeah, I'm completely sucked in some Max. Bet you gotta go, Max bet, Uh, Friday night. We, uh we were we were so four was when it started. We were up very late into the wee hours in Detroit. So we got out there kind of early and we drove by my where my grandpa was buried at the cemetery and Did that drove by the old house, and then you know, segued into the evening Where LaPierre days and an uncle cracker. They think that might have been the biggest LaPierre days. Crowd of all time, like I know that it's hard to imagine that a heavy hitter like Uncle Cracker to bring the bring the fans like that. But there was I've never seen anything like it. Haven't gone there my whole life. Uh, it was It was absolutely insane. The amount of people that were down there the crowd shot that you took. It did look like there were a hell of a lot of people. Yeah, it was crazy. You know, Cracker. He's Yeah. It's It's sentimental, You know, it's it's more about What used to be. That is now but he came out and he played some of the hits and we sang along and had a good time And it was great to, uh it was great to be back in my hometown. I feel Like It's nice to, you know, tap into that, too. That youthful feeling, Uh, every time I go back there, it's as weird as it as it is The one thing that's bizarre, though. Yeah. So Michigan legalized recreational weed. Okay, So my little small town that barely had anything in it has about 15 dispensaries. Now in each one is stand alone. Disney World Just like nothing you've ever seen all these old buildings that used to be pizza places and the Sears and the parties. You know, the corner store. They're all dispensaries now. Oh, man. Yeah, it is, Uh, it's something it's something to be holding his business booming where they all like busy or is it over saturation? It seems like it. It seems like they're holding up in the it might. You know, the town where I used to live. Seems like it's kind of coming back. So it was good to, uh I don't know. I don't know the long term benefits or downside of having that, but you know many weed stores in your town, but It's bizarre to to go back there and see it. See it like that. So you sent me a picture? Uh, where you said this place right? Here is a lump your days legend and there are some sausages and what is what is that? So this mostly this guy does Northern Michigan festivals and fairs and things like that, But it's by you, Billy is the name of it, and it's this Cajun. Cajun man, literally beard down to his chest, Huge white beard and he slays that he serves up the sampler platters that are steak and sausage and chicken. He's got homemade hot sauce right there, Uh, slathers cheese all over it. So that's uh yeah, that is, uh, that's that was a real treat. Pre cracker, You know, you gotta build a base. Yeah, Yeah. Yeah. You gotta give yourself a little Yeah. Um, something happened that I've been waiting to tell. I was in the middle and Like holding onto two different cars doing wheelies jordan. Where was this. It was on thirty five and toledo okay. Because that's interesting that you say that. I was in waterford the other day off of highland road and there was a group of motorcycle. Guys like four guys doing wheelies in front of me in the car. And i'm freaking out that they're on their motorcycles. Doing wheelies. all. I'm thinking the guy's gonna lose balance and fall in front of me. I'm a rollover on. And i'm going. Why are why are these guys not getting busted. I get busted. If i don't stop fast enough at a stop sign. These a holes are driving like crazy. What happened with those guys jordan. So i actually told my dad about it and he goes. Oh yeah. I saw them to he. He pulled a friend about it and apparently the guys are like go to shows like the guys that do the eight days of false hang done show. They never touched the ground. It's we leave all the way everywhere they. You're not supposed to do it on a highway right in front of just average drivers. You're gonna cost her them to freak out. Yeah i'm on a motorcycle and they go on both sides of the me. Care the crap out. I've seen people do like on side streets to like not even on like a highway about my house. I've seen people do it. And i don't understand that either. Like is it practice like. Are you trying to get a motorcycle. Because i'm too worried about the other drivers and all the idiots on the road no matter how safe you are. They're going to be imagine doing this where you don't know who's pulling out of driveways or turning around the corner. I mean i crash. Because it's so bad i i may distracted driver okay. I'm known for that. I don't pay attention. Sometimes the let alone have a guy chained the roof of a car or some idiot. You know doing wheelies on their motorcycle or a fat. That report all this stuff because then it starts to make them look bad because people wonder why is all this going on and cops aren't doing anything in the cops are so under staffed in some neighborhoods. There is no police presence at all. I mean this week's metro times really details. How they have to spend so much time. Saturday nights in greek town to keep the the craziness from getting out of control at night in greektown that all the neighborhoods are suffering. "Amy, How did how did your staff pick all these great places? You know, we, um we thought about what would be the perfect way to celebrate. You know the summer coming out of the pandemic, And it was really the dishes in Chicago that have endured. We Book. Traditions that were, you know, has been available for at least 10 years. But many of them have been available much much longer. And you know, there's the dishes that we go back for time and time again that have really made a mark on the city's culinary since you've got appetizers, main courses and desserts. Let's go through some of these, starting with the rib eye steak at Jean and George Jetties. Well, you talk about iconic. That place has been around since The forties. So I'm glad you highlighted it because they're still going strong, aren't they? They are, you know, a visit to Jean and George studies. Every moment of that is iconic and you know the rib eye. There is just so delicious that we thought it was. It was really perfect to include in this issue. And you liked or your people there in Chicago, like chicken Vesuvio at the village, and this is one of those places that you hear about it and you think? Wait a minute. There's still there on West Monroe, but they are are thick. They are still there. They're still serving up Italian classics and, you know we wanted to include chicken, the studio. It's very Chicago death, and one of the dining writers said that you know what? This version just nails it. So, um, you know, it really feels like it's a dish that belongs to this issue. I love Chinese food who doesn't and you've got a couple of places on the list that I want to ask you about. First of all, you mentioned the chef's special, dry chili chicken dish at lousy, Sean. And they have multiple locations. So if if a restaurant, uh, had more than one spot you didn't eliminate them, did you? No, we didn't. You know, Some of the restaurants included whether it's lost the Schwann or Portillo Zorlu Malnati is there is so many locations, which I think also, you know, just kind of is a testament to what an important part of the city's financing they are. I would have been, I would have liked to have been on your staff. Given this assignment did did your Did your dining people just eat like crazy for a month? How did that work? We did it. Um, you know, it's running around the city, trying different dishes and, you know, just making sure that things are as delicious as we remembered, and, uh You know, I won one dish I wrote about was the Polish sausage that express grill and, you know, just picking up the sausage and eating it over the car chart was just like a very fun afternoon. I'll bet I like my egg rolls. We've talked about egg rolls a lot on this broadcast, and I thought I knew all the great egg rolls around here. Within about a 50 mile radius of the city. But I must confess, I've never been into this restaurant on Irving Park, the Orange Garden, which and you can tell by the signage. They haven't changed in decades. And you guys pick their egg rolls as as a great Chicago dish, didn't you? We did You know, they have a little bit of peanut butter, which is a very Chicago addition to an egg roll. Orange garden is an icon in itself. You know, if you determined by it looks absolutely unchanged, The neon is still still blazing from the window. Um, and it's it's a very classic old school Chinese restaurant of the Admirals are particularly good. I am going to have to try those because a lot of people around here miss the old Peking House, P nutty girl you're going to. You're going to start a lot of fights with with pizza picks. But the one you guys liked in the far South side. They've been around a long time, and they're great. Vito and Nick's and your staff selected their thin crust sausage pizza. We did You know, Vito and next was such an institution And you know, we felt like they're thin Cross sauces is the way to go there. Um, um, one of our writers who wrote this one up and she grew up very close, uh to the restaurant, and you know, it's such an iconic part of her childhood and I have made the visit down there to have those very pizza and it's really memorable. It is and you know what? During the pandemic. That's the kind of place that you always worried about, hoping they would survive. And thankfully they have, haven't they? Absolutely. Yes. And the second hockey at Greek Islands was your selection for this, Uh, famous dish, And I think I remember something about this actually being invented in Chicago. Is that Is that true? Do you know that? That's true Sagen. AKI, you know he didn't out in Greektown you've seen the flaming to use was invented at the person on restaurant, which is a restaurant that has since closed by the dish has become You know, such an incredible part of, um Greek Greek venues and in Chicago and even beyond, um, and the Greek islands, for sure, you know. Keeps the magic going. Yeah, they're in Lombard now, too. This breaded steak sandwich. That major list of Chicago's iconic EADS. Uh now I've been reading about this place for a long time. Not the stuff you would find in Greektown. A Greek town is great, but really like authentic. Amazing euros, So I'd love to go there and they have outdoor seating. So I'm looking forward to that and also looking for to try and Joe Flans Rosemary, which is like Italian inspired Croatian in the West Loop. So those air high on my list Italian inspired Croatian. One, really. David Hammond. Dave, Welcome to the show. Glad to be here, man. It's good to be here because it is next year already. It's 2021. So to have survived 2020, I think is is a testament. That's a bar that we would all released. Many of us would hope to reach. And so that I think in and of itself is a is a good thing and hoping for brighter. Future's coming up in 2021 you've got the vaccines have been announced. And I know that the role has been slow as far as getting those into people but at least says that maybe some parts of what it is that we really enjoy about being out in about in and with each other will will be there for This next year, but you had so this is crazy in its I know what's happened. I've heard about it, You know, with different you know people in the news or notoriety where people have or sports right where they have a task to covert test right and it comes back positive. And then they have another one that comes back negative. It happened with Jimmy Johnson is one where it ended his streak here like a 14 years streak of racism and that ended it turned out to be a false positive. So you had sort of a brush with that situation yourself. Yeah, it was a lot of people have asked me. Why did you get tested in the first place? Which is a fair question? Because way had no symptoms. My wife and I have been fairly strictly quarantined. I mean, she's We go to the grocery store? Maybe once every two weeks. I actually ate inside a restaurant three weeks ago it right belly and drink. Well. It was so brave while the plate place just opened. It's called right Deli and drink. It's in Greektown. I like it quite a lot, actually have a new city article coming out about Right, Ellie and drink in the evolution of the Chicago delicatessen. So anyway, we go there and the chef assured me in this actually happened. We would be the only two people in the restaurant except him and his GM Now he had some guys working and back, but basically we're all massed up. They're going out to a table our table in an isolated dining area. I mean, no one was near us. But you never know. Right? And so when I when I deal was with my daughter, Josie and her fiance, Max. Let's spend Thanksgiving together. This was in November. Of course. So two weeks before Thanksgiving, all of us going to taik Quarantine. Ah, week before Thanksgiving. We all get covert tested just to see if somehow we had it. All of us tested negative, Very cool. We're going to do that, or we plan to do the same thing I Christmas, so I took my first covert test. Came back positive. And I found that out on the 19th of December. So that cancels all our Christmas plans. I've got a quarantine for that. You know, they usually say two weeks, but when they I talked to the nurse on the phone, and she said what we're gonna count. We're gonna assume you were infected the day before the test. I mean that, you know, that's pretty liberal. I think the day before the test And then so that means you have to quarantine until, like the 24th or something like that. So I was like Okay, Um, But if it was my wife, Caroline, who have been so I live with way had a quarantine, too. So you know we're wearing could we weren't in bed together? Obviously, we're in masks around the house. Fortunately, we have a couple of floors in our house. We could separate by floors. I use a separate staircase to get down to the TV room so I can watch old movies, but basically, we're You know, living separate lives for a couple of weeks, But then I got another on the 22nd. I got another covert test. Came back negative. And then on the 28th. I got another covert tests came back negative. And I did it twice just to make double. Sure, I figure I'm going with two out of three tiebreakers, right? Yeah, right. I mean, if I figured two negatives in a row Now. So what do you but nonetheless, I had tested positive. And so what do you do when you test positive? Well, you assume that if you're not feeling any symptoms, perhaps you are asymptomatic, and I should know by temperature like three times a day for days on end. Never got over 97. I mean, my my temperature of anything was attending a low. Um, but I went out to, uh, to luminaria with some of our neighbors. They do it every year, they put the luminary out. My next door neighbor is an epidemiologist, and I went out to get our luminary of the little. You know the little candles and paper bags laid up along the street. And I said, You know, I tested positive for covert. He's never genealogists. And he said You have to go home. He was right. He was right. I was dismissed. I mean, because I was still put even though my quarantine period was over as of the 24th. Still felt he had He still felt this doctor Alvin extorted that. You know, it may be still wasn't safe to be around other people for their sake. And I had to agree with him. You gotta treat if even if you don't feel anything, If you test positive, you've got to assume that you could be transmitting to the disease to others. So strict avoidance of other human beings is a good thing to do. Anyway. It was wild. I got Testing in two places. And this might be something your listeners might want to consider if they feel they may have been exposed or a fae like us just wanted to make sure that they're clean before they get together for a meeting with, you know, our get together with even to other relatives. Um It was tested at that Loretta Hospital, which, incidentally for those living on the West side, I can walk there. It's like 0 30 minutes from my house. Easy walk through Columbus Park nights. Virtually no line. They don't ask for your insurance card. They ask for minimal personal information like you know. Are you feeling any symptoms, and I would usually say muscle pain, which is True. I mean, I suspected student working.
