"Where the game begins. All right, let's get back to talking CBA and we only have a couple more points to touch on here before we let you go. By the way, speaking of the luxury tax Alex barth of 98 5 this is what's up. The players union has grievance grievances pending against four teams. The athletics, the rays, the Marlins, and the pirates. Pretty much the 14s you would expect at the bottom theater of Major League Baseball. What is interesting to me about that is two of those four are very competitive, two of the four are not. The athletics and raised had very good seasons, obviously the raised made the postseason last year made the World Series two years ago in 2020. The Marlins and pirates, they've been pretty much a hot mess for the last 7 years and the pirates. Look, the Marlins have been bad except essentially for the two seasons that they won the World Series and 2003. And 1997, the pirates with the exception of making the playoffs and back to back years in 2013 and 2014 have been pretty much garbage in terms of competitiveness. Yeah, and it's, again, these are markets, maybe not all of them, maybe not Miami, but these are markets where the pirate and the pirates are good and Pittsburgh. That's a big deal. That town goes all in and whereas baseball is becoming a more regional sport. I think there needs to be more focus on areas like that. And that's, you know, I call Cincinnati, another one, obviously they were last year. That's something where baseball needs to do something to incentivize those teams to make sure they're staying competitive with these bigger market teams like Boston, New York, and LA, and I think, you know, the salary floor is how you do that. It's interesting you mentioned mentioned Cincinnati because while the Bengals are heading to the Super Bowl, the reds nearly made the playoffs last year and what was really discouraging to I think bob Cass laney, the Red Sox owner and his family. It's a family run business here in Cincinnati. They had 8 to 10,000 people at great American ballpark in the middle of a very hot stretch playoff structure for them, a race to the playoffs. And this was while they were in playoff, they were technically the number two wild card team for the first half of September and people weren't showing up. I think owners like that are much more concerned about the bottom line day to today business revenue and what they're bringing in and what they're paying in salary. Then let's say obviously the Red Sox, the Yankees, the cubs, the Dodgers. All of these other markets with huge TV deals. You agree? Yeah. Yeah, no, I mean, because you have to, right?.

It is a sports. Talk call in show by the way. Let's see here tony in dry ridge. Hello tony what's up. Yeah my eyes of excited to hear what tony had to say about the bengals practice. And and i'll tell you why i think it'll make sense to you. Maybe the only been saying tony. Yada thing is a former quarterback. And he's looking for you offense. I wanna see the receivers when some of these one on one battles and see what the offensive line look. I'm hoping now. I'm hoping that the defense might be better than we thought. Wouldn't that be nice. Wouldn't it be nice. Yes i'm gonna look at the positive side and also molly thing. It's really disappointed. Me about the bengals. If i still think they need one more piece offensive line and they know what i'd rather have. It happened now than that. We the season starts. It's still interesting to me that they had identified got hurt and they looked at some centers. But i think there were a lot of people who thought that when we found out he was going to miss the entire year that they would be pretty active in the tackle market. And they will they really. Weren't maybe bob. Castellini gave them advice on anyway. But like i'm just joking but anyway they they got time to still look at that and i'd rather have it happen now like i say later. They still got time to fix them stuff. And let's all. I'm going to be positive about defense and one last thing. Let you or quick expansion question. I'm scared death reading some the stuff that the big twelve who actually was the big ten and now there's a little light are done and bob bos speech last week. Were off but Tearing out to kick out of this. I compared their commissioner to guyana. You dress up until what. Eighty nine ninety. Yeah yeah yeah you remember the clown. And that's yeah he. He was a he was jolly. He was great. And bob bos beat oklahoma and especially texas was the clown because they knew any anytime that you need to put a great wrestler making look goods. Send him out there to fight. Dunk the clown and i think those kind of it that no what. I'm really worried about now. He's talking about alliance with the The pac twelve out there that what he and he keeps saying. I keep reading new c. Don't bring move the needle. Well you know. What does manhattan kansas or i will. There was a piece Tony in the athletic last week. That kind of took a look at that and said you know from an eyeballs perspective from television ratings perspective. Do these schools who aren't texas. And oklahoma bring that much to the table relative to not just cincinnati but memphis. Ucf in houston. And the answer was no. I mean frankly know. Oklahoma has run that league for a while. Texas's obviously a huge brand removed from a football perspective now removed those two schools from that conference. How many times have you whole boy. I was state's playing kansas state. Man i cancel cantzler plans cyclones wildcats. Here we go. I mean there's just thursday from a football perspective. Granted are some of those schools. A bigger deal than let's say. Ecu sure but if but if you're looking for football and of it the texas brand and the oklahoma brand and specifically what oklahoma has been able to dominate in that conference. The rest are table scraps. Baylor's had some very good years and they certainly bring something to the table in the other sports. Kansas certainly brings a lot to the table when it comes to basketball but all of this happens on the shoulders of football football matters more than anything else. And i say that as a die hard college basketball fan from football perspective. Do you get excited. When kansas and kansas state play football get excited when oklahoma's i mean people can talk about the oklahoma state coach because he's a bit of a goofball. He's had a mullet time. Just sit down and lock in and go boy or the folks are playing oklahoma state's getting set to take the field. I wanna make sure i'm watching. Their tilt against texas tech. Chances are not that much. And so yeah. I i'm kind of with you there when i can certainly sell me on the idea that removing yourself from east carolina and a couple of the dregs of this league is a good thing and you partner with the big twelve but the league would be moving into the league you would be combining with is certainly massively diminished at least stature and prestige compared to one you might have been joining five years ago giving apple you. Ucf you see was it to three seasons. Go on a friday night. I was there You know to top twenty teams. Friday night national. Tv espn drew. Great ratings has good a college football spirited. You put kansas and kansas state in that same spot and let the mets them up and let's see he scores best so yeah i agree with you. I mean look. There's thank you very much. There's every reason to one a lead. That is more lucrative higher profile. You're playing bigger but when we when we were when we were talking about you see going into the big twelve five years ago if you let your mind wander. What did you think of. You thought of texas coming to nipper stadium. You thought of the kansas jayhawks come into fifth third arena from a basketball standpoint. You know there's there's there's still a lot there still enough there. you know. Baylor obviously won a national championship. Great for years and women's basketball kansas that goes with oh kansas kansas basketball and oklahoma football in that league mostly been the same. Kansas wins the basketball league every year. But you know it's one thing and you know obviously there's west virginia's in that conference and they bring something to the table. But when when we've talked about the big twelve. The two schools that lead to the top of mind. I are texas and oklahoma. So that mean. You don't wanna be in a partnership with those other schools not not necessarily again if depending on where things go with the college football playoff depending on what the finances would be depending on what the media contracts with bring in. I hate to do this. Because i'm sure it's a lovely school and there's probably somebody within the sound of my voice who went there. Here's the litmus test for me does.

"Got a couple of emails during that show and afterwards saying look this is not that big of a deal or i get it. Nobody likes these but the criticism is overboard for me. At least and i think this is where most baseball fans are coming from. It's not simply the fact that they put the all-star game players in uniforms that are ugly. It's that they put the all stars in uniform that there was no demand for folks who run major league baseball and obviously starts with rob manfred. It includes their apparel partner. Nike but there are a lot of people signed off on this. They did something that. There's no real appetite for that. I don't i don't recall at any point at any point recently or not so recently someone doing you know what would make the all star game cool if all the guys were wearing the same thing in fact. I don't know one baseball fan. Who was like you know. It'd be cool if they did it. Like the pro bowl and put everybody in just the same uniform. Is it a big deal in the grand scheme of things not necessarily but you do have people who run this sport who are in charge of making big decisions about this sport. Who did something that. There's no appetite for that tells me the game is being run by people who are woefully out of touch and when people who are out of touch with their core customers and you can talk all you want about building the sport growing getting new fans all of those things are important at the same time you know the best way to get new fans make your core fans happy very organically they will attract newer fans. They'll bring 'em we'll talk about the game. They'll just i really believe that man. That's the best way you do it. Get your core fans buzzing about something. For instance i am a red season ticket holder have been since one thousand nine hundred ninety eight with my dad. I still have that account. "Six at egger is how you can reach me during the show on twitter. I will have a poll question on twitter here in just a second which sort of goes along with what i just spent fifteen minutes talking about. Which is where you are as reds fan at the all star break could it be anything but static again. Context is needed. You gotta be able to sort of contextualized what they've done over the i ninety games sort of have to go back and reflect on where we thought this would team would be even before the season even began. It's not like they're on ninety. One pace are on pace to win. Eighty six games. They're going to have to win more than eighty six games to win the national league central. They're going to have to make this team better at the trade deadline. They're gonna need some stuff to go right. That didn't go right in the first half. But while we'll spend a lotta time over the next couple of days looking ahead if you're merely looking at the previous three and a half months and then looking at where this team is right now. How could you be anything but at least deeply satisfied or even a static elated if you will with where this team is forty eight up and forty two down ninety games into the season. Five three seven four nine fifteen thirty by the way read. Some brewers this weekend it should be a blast. Great american ballpark. We have tickets all week long. I do not know if we're going to give them away today. I am not here tomorrow. Because i haven't taken enough time off so we may hold off on all five pairs until wednesday and thursday. "A former All Star they acquired Alex Wood, a former All Star who would have thought that 2 2.5 years. Later. The only guy remaining from that deal would be Kyle Farmer, and you might argue the guy who's been most valuable because you can play a couple of different positions. He's had some big hits this year, and even if he shouldn't be cast as the starting shortstop, he's a really nice piece to have because you can play anywhere in the infield. You can put up. You can put them behind the plate if necessary, and as pensioners dough, and that's probably the role he's best suited for. As pinch hitters go, the Reds have had far fewer reliable bats come to the plate. In critical situations than Kyle Farmer. He's been a really nice pickup, and he's done. I think as as good as you ever could have expected him to do playing shortstop at the same time, they still need some offensive help, and that's the place. I think you're most likely likely to look and the name that a lot of people are going to talk about His Trevor story of the Colorado Rockies. I'm not necessarily sure the resident to be able to meet the asking price of Colorado. But if you're looking for a place where you can find the bat offensively that can help us clean a little bit, I think the first place for looking as a shortstop Then maybe center field, depending on how they feel about the guys, They have their right Now. There you go. Mow Egger. Great observations and people message. I mean, this is totally unfair. BU being in Milwaukee and on the road and I don't I don't think I've contributed to this. But the the messages I've gotten most sounds sober. I don't know why that would be so surprising multiple tweet as well as a texture to I don't think I framed it so that I thought you were boozing it up, But I mean, you're on the road. It's a weekend. Why not? Well, I'm not going to say that. I haven't had a couple of cold ones today, but I've spent most of the day on the golf course and the rule. There is moderation. Now, if you talk to me at about six hours, and you and I've had conversations like that before, If you talk to me at about six hours, it might be a different ballgame. Fair enough. Yes, that's exactly correct. Enjoy the rest of your weekend in Milwaukee. Hopefully, Reds can at least do it again tonight and maybe take three or four. Which would be nice. And set them up before that All Star game to come back to Great American ballpark after seeing some Reds do some damage in Colorado. That's what I'm looking forward to. It's just nice to have games that are substantive games that matter where it looks like. Guys are out there trying and not going through the motions where you want to go to the ballpark and hang out with your friends and go. Hey, it's more than a social gathering. This team is something that in itself makes me feel good. Or am I living better through lowered expectations? You know this this team this team is I sent a couple of different times. This team is worth investing in and they always weren't worth investing in and I wish you know, I get accused of being too mean to Reds ownership, but I wish this offseason the front office would have gone all in with the core of guys they have right now because it is a good core. It is a a good core and and likeable and fun to watch, and they play hard, and they've They pulled themselves automatic couple of different times. I think this team is worthy of being invested in and I think this team is worthy of being watched and paid attention to. Now again. These next two nights are big. Can you imagine if they could win these next to you go to the All Star break. You come back and you have the Milwaukee Brewers, who you trailed by four. You have them come in a great American ballpark for a weekend series. That's the kind of thing that sterling for years we've been dying for right all those years in which the red Rebuilding all those years in which you know by now the Reds were a billion games out of first place. We've been longing for a midsummer series at home that really mattered. Granted, it's going to matter a lot more of this team can take care of business these next two nights, but still this club. If you take where a lot of people thought this team was going to be at this stage in the season, if you if you look at what was written about this club and in late April and early May, when folks were talking about a possible fire sale, or people talking about the Reds being sellers, or those kind of lamenting the fact the Reds we're going to have another losing season. This team has put itself in a position where they are now playing the kind of games that we wanted to see for a long time. If they can handle their business against the Milwaukee Brewers, and let's say they win three out of the neck. Lots right. And in that case, if you do that, I think we feel pretty good about their chances the rest of the way, And I think it would make it crystal clear that this front office needs to give this team a boost. Whether it be a bullpen arm, whether it be a bat, whether it be a starting pitcher somewhere. It's up to these guys to put the front office in that type of position and hopefully over the next couple of games against Milwaukee. They can do that. That's it. We'll get you ready for it. Reds brewers Coming up my man Mohagher. Thanks for making time you.

"Valley Sports. Ohio, follow him on Twitter at Jon Seda call. One, where do you do much on Instagram? I know you said you'd like to get back in doing that once you get back to travel which you're not doing yet, I guess. Yeah. It's a I struggle while we're doing these games from the studio with images, that would be really compelling or interesting to folks home. My life is pretty mundane right now. You know, I'm living in a small apartment down near the ballpark and where our studio is. And I pretty much go a to be today, to be today to be every single day. Yeah, I'm sure it's, you know, not the easiest thing in the world, I'm sure it hasn't been easy. Doing these games off, a TV monitor, which is obviously what you're doing on Monday night. Of course thousands had their fifth straight come-from-behind win first time since I believe what nineteen ninety-five that that has happened. The Reds have had five straight come-from-behind wins and of course they won the division that girl that was last year. John. I'm sure you know this by now that the Cincinnati Reds won a postseason series indeed. And and I think there's a decent chance that this Bunch, you know, could erase that do still have some climate to do in their division. But yeah, it's, you know, calling games off the monitor, is a challenge. It's hardest in baseball in my opinion, in Reading fly balls because you, you learn, they, you know, lets you know, when you're a play-by-play guy, you don't watch the swing, you watch the outfielder. Sure. And in the setup off a monitor, it's it's mixed. It's very difficult to get depth and feel for that job. Off of a monitor. But it helps for me that, you know, my, a lot of my national work in the fall, in the wintertime. I did three college football games to NFL games happening, a playoff game and and almost all of my college basketball outside of the NCAA tournament off of a monitor, and, you know, comparatively basketballs by far, the easiest for it to do that in. But just those repetitions learning how to deal with the delay learning, how to deal with screen images that may freeze or Hiccup from time to time. That prepared me immensely. If I had gone exclusively into baseball game without any of that prior monitor experience, I think the first month would have been a lot rougher. Yeah, I'm sure it would have been but, you know, you're a pro and you are able to figure things like that out over the weekend. I got to tell you John and I saw you at Great American Ballpark on the third and the fourth was covering the Cubs for mlb.com to see Great. American Ballpark full certainly on Friday 9 a.m. For fireworks night and even Saturday and Sunday, very good. Crowds Lively crowds of course, cuz there was a lot of cubs fans on hand, for all three games. You compare that with what I went through and everybody back in the Boston, media went through a year ago at Fenway, watching the Red Sox work out the season, of course, hadn't even started yet. And it was just so surreal, Eerie, almost and watching the players, play in an empty ball park to have gotten come this far. I think we're very lucky and fortunate to have baseball back. I would totally agree. And, and I think I would agree with you also that, you know, this last series represented that first flush feel of what we remembered of what those epics, you know, a little battles, a full. Ballpark, that is just brimming with energy. There is a tangible feel to what is immaterial, you know, that that there is a sense birth..

"The Reds in Atlanta Braves get together here at Great American Ballpark. Game. Two of the series is tomorrow at 7 10. Game three Saturday at 4 10, and the finale is Sunday at 1 10. This is the Hall of Fame. Highlight with Reds historian Greg Roads. What if the Reds hadn't traded Frank Robinson? What if the Reds hadn't signed that young kid without a lot of town? Out of Western Hills, Pete Rose. What if the Reds had signed Derek Jeter with their first round draft choice back in 1992? Lots of fascinating What if to consider in Reds history, And here's one of the most interesting what if the 1969 Reds had won the Western Division manager Dave Bristol had the Reds in first place? His latest September 12th before a sore arm pitching staff finally gave up the lead. And the Red slipped out of the race, finishing third, just four games behind the Atlanta Braves. This was Bristol's third straight winning season, not a bad record. But Bob Housing, the Reds president and general manager, fired Bristol and picked another young manager, the relatively unknown Sparky Anderson. Turned out to be one of the best moves house, um, ever made. But you've got to wonder what housing would have done. If Bristol had led the Reds into the playoffs in 1969 would have been a little harder to fire manager who just want a division title. Could it have been day Bristol managing the Big Red Machine of the seventies? But of course, that was to be Sparky's team and no second guessing the success he had, but interesting to wonder how the history books might have been different. If they, Bristol's Reds had won just five more games in 1969, What if and what if you don't visit the Reds Hall of Fame? Well, you'll miss out on a lot of fun and reds history, that's for sure..

"Document provider of the Cincinnati Reds After finishing up last night suspended game earlier this afternoon. The Reds and Nationals wrap up their three game series tonight in Washington as Sonny Gray opposes Stephen Strasburg and thanks for joining us on the Cincinnati Reds pregame show. Presented by your Cincinnati northern Kentucky. Honda dealers. I'm Dave Armbrister. The Reds returned home to Great American Ballpark on Monday as they welcome the Phillies to town for three games. This is the Hall of Fame highlight with Reds historian Greg Roads, So you think there are too many walks today? Too many full counts? Well, imagine this. If you had been in a ballgame back in 18 87, you might have seen the cow go to three and two. But then 24 and three. Yep, That's because it took five balls for a walk and four strikes for a strikeout in that season. In the early days of baseball. The pitching rules changed, often as a rule makers tried to even out the balance between pitching and hitting at first pitching was underhand, but pitchers trying for the advantage wanted more power honor throws and their delivery began inching up higher and higher. And finally, the rules were changed to permit side arm deliveries and then pictures being pitchers. The arms went higher and higher, and it became impossible to distinguish between the legal side arm pitch and an illegal overhand delivery. Finally, the umpires gave up and the rules committee said Okay, you can pitch any way you want. Well, very quickly. Overhand pitching became dominant. But as it became more popular, it also became obvious that the old pitching distance of 50 Ft was now too close. And so the distance moved back to the modern distance of 60 ft six inches and they fiddle with the number of balls and strikes until it's settled in at the modern, four balls and three strikes. In 18 89. Lots of rule changes over the years and lots of changes that the Reds Hall.

"He is Giants baseball on KNBR, 1045 and 6 80 the spores leaf. Brought Brooks Larry Krueger. It is always a pleasure to be joined by Mr John Miller. John, How are you? I'm well and it's It's windy. If we were having a ball game here we have one of those nights where Thanks would have a hard time on pop ups. There's a small craft advisory going on or in our case, Maybe, you know, small second baseman Were it be a pop up dance advisory. That's what it would be way some. We have to raise a flag somehow to let people know. Coming to the ballpark. You might see the pop up dance tonight an oracle so be ready. Tell the kids now there's a promotion. Yeah, Somebody did. Larry Bear on the phone. You have you seen? Ah, lot of Giants baseball. So I'm gonna run this that by you because when I When I saw it last night, it just it hit me because When you think about the staff's the Giants have had, especially those championship winning staff since they've moved West To know that this giant staff after 41 games is in the company of those great ones where Giants starters right now haven't E R a of 2.68. And that's the fourth lowest Giants, a starting staff E. R. A Over the 41 games. Since the team has moved west and we're not talking, Let's become and cane and Bumgarner we're talking the school funny and and Gausman and Web and Cueto and and wood. What these guys have done here in this short amount of time has been nothing but remarkable. Well, it really, and it's been great to see and I think it's sort of a tribute to Andrew Bailey, the pitching coach for this ball club. A swell a some of the other. People involved in that Craig Albert ass out in the bullpen Jape Martinez, the assistant pitching coach, because E think the Giants have become A destination now, where a picture especially one that is coming often off season or is trying to show people that he still has a lot to offer and maybe get a new contract and we saw some guys who left this club. After last year who went to other ballparks and got very nice contract like Drew Smiley is one azan example. But and Kevin Gausman is another Who, Actually he got a new contract and stayed with the new big contract, so I think that's just something where word gets around quickly that Hey, wait a minute. They'll take you and make you better and and and that'll pay off for you in a real way. So I think When you look at this rotation D Sclafani is in that category. Tonight's starter and I think, and Wood is another guy because man he is who's been better than wood. So far. He's just been Superb and I think the Giants even God's been coming back. And can he do it again? What he did last year. He was so good last year in the short season, and he's been better so far this year. So anyway, it's really and ultimately they're the guys who have to get it done, and they Are getting it done. So, you know they've had Syriza Chorus Field. Now there is the Great American ballpark. So it's not exactly that They're just getting it done in great places to pitch night after night. More of our conversation with John Miller. Next here on the sports leader, Aziz Pandemic.
