"Chicago City crews overnight removed two statues of Christopher Columbus Following weeks of being vandalized and the targets of protest burn a church fire as the Moor has the report. Mayor Lori Lightfoot says the removal of the Columbus statues is temporary, while the city figures out what to do with monuments and memorials citywide. One of those statues have been in the little. It'll leave neighborhood, and Pasquale Johnny says. A great injustice has been done. It's no longer an Italian American issue. This is about the revision of history. Another resident, Sally Freeman, agrees. The statues had to come down. People say that the news about Columbus being a bad guy, and taking prisoners and slaves is just a made up, but I think it's probably the truth. Bernie to FOIA for CBS News Chicago

Rashad Richey on Trump, Christopher Columbus, and gang culture in Chicago

"And observe. Do you not find it ironic that Republicans rejected healthcare from President Barack Obama? But they embraced covert 19 from Donald Trump. You got to really think about this. They rejected. Health care. From Obama. But Embrace Cove at 19. From Trump. Here's something else. That's hell. Ironic. If you are told You must wear a mask during a public safety. Crisis. May the Republicans would tell you that is a violation of their freedom. The government cannot tell me what to do with my body. The government cannot tell me what to put on my body. I love not to cry because these are the same individuals who would tell you that the government has a right to tell women exactly what to do with their body. These are the same people saying it is unconstitutional to wear a mask but constitutional to tell a woman biologically what to do with her entire body. No, I'm not debating where you're at ethically on the abortion narrative. You got to find that the irony here. On the constitutional and legal marriage. 40 2 to 7. 03 big ups to to Mayor Lightfoot. I like Mayor Lightfoot not know She hasn't challenges too. Mayor Lightfoot in Chicago. Removed a statue of Christopher Columbus. Inside of their grant park community in the middle of the night. I mean, they moved and they put it In a covering and they ripped it up. Mayor Lightfoot order this statue to be removed. From the park overnight to avoid what she called any high profile confrontation. And you know who's complaining. Italian Americans. Italian American leaders in Chicago are not on board with this decision. Yeah. They upset because Okay. I'm trying to understand. Why are they upset Because the guy was Italian. Is that why they are upset If anyone can give me more insight into this because We know Christopher Columbus did not discover a damn thing. How can you discover something? That other people have discovered. That other people have actually. Already being how could you discover it? But it shows you the power. Of white colonizers of then and now. Then and now because history books steel kind of, say Christopher Columbus discovered America We were all taught this mess in Public K through 12 education. Many of us were taught the narrative that Christopher Columbus discovered America. In history books today that question is still there and I read a history book not too long ago. One of the K through 12 history books, and it said. Did. Christopher Columbus Discover America? And the answer literally in the history books, said kind off and provided an explanation. How did he did he kind of discover America that's like being almost pregnant. Let's go to Todd in Cleveland, Todd Good day. Welcome. He could have discovered it for him. That means everybody discovers something the end I can discover a country I know. I know. The whole thing is once the propaganda, but he discovered it for him anyway. But that's not the credit he's given. He's given the created discovering it to the free world. The free world. The Free World Rye. Okay, Anyway, I'm okay with that being moved here. Here's what I called about. But you got my attention when you brought up your life. 2150 shootings in Chicago already this year as of two days ago, I'm sure somebody caught it yesterday by the way. And big chunk. Those shootings over and one cop trading area which is about maybe Maybe three square miles of the city. She is in our best interest to be open to the possibility of federal federal government helping out they don't need to be coming in like storm troopers what they could They definitely need some help. Because the issue contrary to what Trump says is not, um, law and order, you know, getting it on crime, a crime prevention, and that's what Chicago has the probable crime prevention more so than actual crime. They were more if there were more entrenched in the neighborhood to help get better understanding of what's going on prevent crime. Then you know what they would be having to come down on criminals because they were prevented him beforehand. She doesn't appear to be open to that. Let me give a little more insight and I agree with you. That's definitely part of the problem. I've been to Chicago. I'm aware it actually negotiating. Gang treaties right and understanding the culture of Chicago, especially especially in some of these areas with the higher violence ratios. Here's what's really happening. Police officers in those districts. They're real job is to keep South Chicago. Separate From the rest of Chicago. And they're policing tactics. Do not solve homicide. You know where Chicago is Known for more so than the shootings in side of law enforcement. They also have the worst murder. Solve rate. In America for any urban city. They're not solving crimes. They're not holding these killers accountable. To the Criminal Act. Now, a lot of speculation as to why some say is because they are not interested in truly policing that community. They're not interested. And getting involved in an investigative process. Some say connected to corruption, right. But the bottom line is this. You can't avoid the reality that all of these shootings continued a happen. And somehow not even mention that their law enforcement agency is one of the most negligent agencies as it relates to solving homicides. Number two Before May Lightfoot you had are on manual who was a ridiculous mayor. I don't care that he was a Democrat. He was a ridiculous individual. He gets in, and he actually closes down all of these schools, thes public schools emerges them without a comprehensive plan. No understanding of gang culture in Chicago. And when he did this, he forced Vice Lords and GS to go to school together. Well, they decided not to many of them simply dropped out. And became expressions off their social economic environment doing many, many in his administration actually admitted that was a huge mistake when they did that. Go ahead on. They were doing that anyway, dropping out or going and not to the rate. They're well, sir, the data, the data shows a sharp increase in drop out once they created education desert through his emerging program. That lacked insight into the gang culture in Chicago. Well, do you have the data on what they were doing when they were actually there? Because you could drop out and physically beat here? That happens a lot. I know Chicago beer. Yeah. I don't even know if they keep that kind of date. If you drop out me and you kind of mentally absent still going to school. Yeah. Yeah. You there you there hanging out, but you did. But, you know, I mean, we've all done that. I've done that before, while I was there, but not what we're talking about a particularly high level that goes on in Chicago. And if they had more people just to pick up the paper where a lot of police officers have to do and, you know, let him get out. Let him stay out on the street a little bit more and investigate what's going on. And she would also have room to have more people out on the street investigating. I mean, speaking with the neighbors, they could change the culture because its culture in Chicago We always say Chicago, but it's really just one section of Chicago. Most of Chicago's okay culture culture in that particular section or two sections of Chicago is such that they embraced that D A V E. Parents just hearing their regularly conceived Children and raise Children and celebrate their bad behavior when they were young, chuckling and laughing it off. And then when your kids think that it's okay to be like that, they're walking around like they don't know what's going on What you put in the head that it was okay to be that way. You could still make it because you still around. It happened a lot. Well, the original the original gang coach of Chicago. A lot of people get this incorrect. The black gangs. We were mimicking Italian gangs in Chicago Ryan when we had Italian gangs in Chicago field here, the local society romanticized right and they still are there, but the local society romanticized them. And Black said Okay, wait a minute. These guys are organized that were respected. They're getting money. They're getting respect. And they attempted to do the very same thing Layer over and others attempted to do the same thing, mimicking the Italian mob bosses off their error, and they will met with a whole different response than these cat. I appreciate your call, brother. I wish I could tell you some about Trump actually not lose them. Would you brought play that video? I mean audio yesterday, but I get get to a Knicks. Let's talk a little bit about the need for more people to be aware of this crisis. Because it. It is a crisis. So Denise, I guess my question is where did this need come from. I'm immune. I'm assuming that one point grocery stores were in the community, and then they left. Do you have any any insight on why that shift happened? So before the nineteen sixties and seventies. There were neighborhood stores corner stores supermarkets didn't really exist. Because before that we had the traditional cross structure walkable neighborhoods. Like Weston still is like grant park's still is in some of our other in town neighborhoods, but suburban areas started to thrive and with. That went the perceived or real at the time wealth with it. And so it left those communities that had both that brain drain in that income dream lost and supermarkets weren't investing in there in the larger question is as executive director. My job is to answer. Why should I care? Well, the reason you should care is we all do better when it's a healthier. Georgia health care is the.
