Singer and convicted sexual predator R. Kelly sentenced today to 30 years behind bars. At least the jaffe spoke with ABC's Derek Dennis about the case. An attorney representing some of the victims of former R&B crooner R. Kelly says this sentencing today for subjecting young fans to systemic sexual abuse was long overdue. No one can undo the harm that has been done to these victims. Gloria allred saying they were ready for justice for mister Kelly. Derek Kelly's attorneys, though, claim his accusers were motivated by money, much different story. Oh, absolutely. I mean, that was their argument all along claiming R. Kelly was innocent of the charges against him. Though the judge, the federal judge and Brooklyn courtroom didn't buy it at all, essentially throwing the book at R. Kelly, giving him 30 years in prison. He'll get some time off for good behavior, but it's essentially a life sentence says R. Kelly is 55 years old right now. You know, he had been facing long-standing accusations of sexually abusing women and young girls or one of the charges involved a bribery charge related to his relationship with the late singer Aaliyah to get her a fake ID so the two could be married after she believed she was pregnant. She passed away years ago, but R. Kelly had been dogged by claims of trying to marry Aaliyah while she was just 15 years old. And so that came up in the court proceedings as well. R. Kelly sat there without much of a reaction for most of the day, including when the sentencing was read aloud that were victims impact statements that were presented in court before the sentencing from 7 accusers, one of them said she felt like she wanted to commit suicide because he had wronged her so badly and abused her so much. And so again, R. Kelly facing 30 years in prison. And that's for racketeering conviction, involving sexual assault and sex trafficking of these underage women underage girls. But how come then so many fans still adore him despite the abuse? It's amazing. And that's really part of this story here, not only were there fans showing up at the courthouse in Brooklyn, there's one man who's facing charges for trying to go after the prosecutors who were prosecuting R. Kelly, making threats against them. And so he's in trouble with the law for that. So many fans love his music. He was a very popular singer, his hits run the gamut and there was discussion about whether he could afford to pay a fine in this case and his attorneys tried to claim that R. Kelly is indigent, but prosecutors said, he's got millions of dollars in royalties that could be released right away that could more than cover any fine against him. And so R. Kelly declared non indigent at all, but a million worth millions because of his music career. The accusers got to tell the court what they were feeling, that they felt he misled his fans and had preyed on them. One of them saying she'd literally wish she could die because of how low he made her feel. What did he do? You said he was sort of downcast during much of this proceeding today. What did he do as the accusers were talking directly to him? There were many points where he grimaced a bit. He was conferring with his attorneys. Interesting though, one of his victims that was presented by prosecutors is a woman who's supporting him now. One of his girlfriends who claims that they're now engaged to be married despite the charges that he had faced is now sentenced for and will spend 30 years in prison for. As you said, a lot of supporters out there, including at least one woman who was presented as a victim, and is now engaged to be married to R. Kelly. ABC's Derek Dennis, thank you, Derek. "Police Accountability changes are now in effect in Washington, and Monica Alexander, the director of the state Training Academy, says she and her staff embrace those changes. We get more from Kemal's Keith Eldritch. The new state laws include the priority of de escalating any situation first shielding and distance equals time and that time gives you an opportunity to deescalate yourself. First of all, and then also to have a conversation with what you're trying to, you know, arrest and making sure that you it ends safely. The escalation training is not new. It's been going on for years. But what is new is the banning of tear gas and choke holds and a limit on high speed chases, really concerned some of the limits On your tool belt that they're being taken away from you.
