No, I always heard it was Travolta, apparently when he wrote the book, It was written for somebody who looks more like John Goodman O R, over way. And then when he did like the running, he'd lost a lot of ways I say. Oh, is that being thin the whole time? Interesting plus there. Ah, there's that scene where force camp is running. "I don't have that research before me but maybe that's something we can address When we all reconvene for a different episode I remember them to the best of my ability? What we said in that episode was the best research we could find? Yeah I mean I remember that one being particularly hard to get through and it was. Yeah it was one of those things where it certainly did paint a picture of something that went down but there was a lot of gray area in the storytelling as well right. It was kind of like I don't know like didn't was the deal. Like the person ended up being like posing as a child and was actually like a small adult or something like that yes the rabbit hole in very very deep in that one it was It was about to women in who had essentially been brainwashed his incorrect term. But they had been influenced by this woman who was posing as a younger person and they were convinced that they had to punish the children of because anyway you got convoluted but they believe they had to punish punish their children by locking them up in cages and leaving them in the basement and doing all kinds of other terrible torturous things to those kids But in the end people did go to jail and The kids were were safe at least for a time to what I can recall all right. Well Hey let's That one is a bit of a Downer. But thank you very much travis for writing in because in theory that is a silver lining if both children did in fact survive the ads about the best silver lining. You're going to get I can only imagine and ptsd that would come with going through scenario like that that would follow you into adulthood But you know there's professionals out there to help people cope with that kind of stuff so very true better to be alive. I would say thousand you know next week. Got One from Brandon Titled North Carolina Carolina Blue Ridge Military Bases Brennan says. Hey guys really love the show been listening for a few years now. In addition to traveling the country in my van I'm an avid avid trail runner and frequently run twenty plus miles solo in remote trails. That's impressive it is very very impressive. I love to see your fitness tracker data. Bet You have a catabolism like a hummingbird yeah hope you let them track all that data the mixture of facts conspiracy and humor in the podcast means as I always have a few episodes lined up for a run. We very much appreciate that that you consider what we do in any way remotely humorous. I now live in Ashville North Carolina which is about four hours from Atlanta Atlanta. I operate a guide company and take clients out on running trips in Piz good national forests with most ranging from five miles to fifteen miles since starting. My Company have spent a lot of my spare time learning as much as I can about. The history of the region including the origin of many trails and landmarks in the area turns out. There are a lot of rumors of have hidden military bases throughout the Blue Ridge. Mountains and he says here's where it gets crazy. That's right through on in the email trademark we love it sitting there In addition to the MARFA ask light phenomenon Brown Mountain There is a conspiracy about multiple hidden military bases deep deep in the mountains typically underground there only a few witnesses who can substantiate the claim but given my extensive time on the trails and several strange phenomenon the region. I'd be interested for you guys to look into it and or do episode on there There's a lot to be learned and I think there is some clout to certain stories stories and claims based on my extensive time out in the forest now. This is a fairly lengthy message that we've got here from Brennan. So we'RE GONNA we're we're just GONNA continue here. It really is worth timeless. Keep listening in particular. There's a large unoccupied valley on the western slopes of the black mountains. That's Mount Mitchell in despite light being considered national forest land there is no entry by trail or road into a largely unoccupied area. The single road that leads up into the valley is littered with ominous. No Oh trespassing signs. That don't seem to fit the character of the forest. Some of the testimonies firsthand accounts of list military vehicles and aircraft mysteriously vanishing in the area. Most of which are traveling from east to West from Marian. Some claims state. That satellite imagery has been tampered to disguise. Buildings roads or even entrances to the base. There's there's a twenty six mile running or hiking route that circles the valley from orig- above in having done it a few times of notice some ominous structures in the valley that I can't explain or identify on satellite Loyd there are also several abandoned Mica. Mines that are rumored to allow access below the mountain. I've even found one myself though. I didn't have repelling gear to get down into it. Additionally there are similar areas nearby that are claimed to have hidden military bases including the Great Smoky Mountains National Park Grandfather Mountain State Park in potential connection action to the P. A. R. I. Research Center outside of Cashiers North Carolina Grandfather Mountain was is considered a UN world heritage site and into the nineteen nineties. Nineties there were countless accounts of military personnel patrolling through the national forest along the boundaries of the Blue Ridge Parkway the Linn Cove viaduct circles grandfather. It was also the last piece of the Parkway to be completed the fragile and unique ecosystem that's in quotes was blamed for the delays. Since they wanted to make a little impact it is possible. It just happens to be the same area where another hidden military base is rumored to be housed underground. He says overall keep up the good work in the is signed Brendan Thank you so much for writing to us with that Brennan we we are in Atlanta as many of you know and we are highly even know how many miles away from the Blue Ridge mountains in especially from the mountain range there. But it's not many no no I mean that's where you go when you'd get a cabin. Yeah you know you go do little cabin getaway. It's in Blue Ridge Georgia that's also wear the The Big Foot Museum yes. It is and it's right there. It's closer than than where he's talking about but yeah but that that mountain ranges fairly large very very old and the concept that let's say a military or even maybe a paramilitary probably the state sponsored military force would want to have basis amongst those mountains boasts both for strategic use along the coast. That would that. Isn't that at far from the mountain range but as well as you know Strategic other military outposts to have a place both for refuge and for to make decisions if the United States let's say is under attack for some reason in the mainland. There are a lot of reasons why you'd WANNA put at least one big base there. They're now the rumors for all of these various ones that are being mentioned by Brennan. I don't I don't know about a lot of all those I have heard. I have personally heard some stuff about the black mountains And I you know what I think we should do a little more. We should do a little more research on this knoll. Check into it. I mean how do we what do you want to set out with. Maybe we should league up with our buddy at the foot museum and do an expedition combined forces. Yeah Expedition Bigfoot do that he has no. I'm not I'm not. I'm being serious like he's got gear. He's got like yeah satellite stuff you know. He's got golf carts that are fitted with this. These are kind of tracking devices. We should do this suit. And while we're at it we could do some squashing. We definitely need to get squash on so yeah. I don't know maybe there's a maybe maybe there's something there checkout try and find an underground military base while we also look for now. Here's the thing though. Let's say we do find one or the are there. Were both of those things who's GonNa believe us. Well what if we if we find the base and its active. They're not gonNA let us leave. NO WE'RE GONNA get black bagged tagged into some sort of American Gulag. You know we'll and if we encounter a multidimensional being such as the foot the bigfoot himself or herself I mean what happens then. Well presumably you get swept into an alternate dimension mentioned. I would hope interest. I don't know if we go into it. When you say what did you say multidimensional being? Yeah Inter dimensional inter dimensional multidimensional being that can traverse the dimensions. That will take you there. Mary poppins style by touch. ooh Now that is interesting. What would it open a portal that we all get to go into or would it just be it? Phasing it out well. Chances are with terror molecular structures apart. Strew it's true you know we're we're not built for that kind of kind of travel. I don't think yeah well. Maybe maybe maybe we'll just encounter a bigfoot that's regular and we'll just kick get no no not kick it. Oh okay like hang out okay. Yeah Yeah we'll show you think I'm a monster kicking bigfoot. All all right well you can take it with bigfoot but will that that is genuinely an interesting sounding thing and we definitely WanNa look into that. So thank you brandon for sending that in. We're going to get it into a few more emails. After a quick word from our sponsor we think the ones who gets away a blessed lucky if the you want the Dublin suburb of Knock Nari has never been the same. And then he's screaming at the top off the top of grandfather mountain. And so everybody can hear him. Everyone can hear. So we go across the bridge. I am shaking like a leaf carrying my son. You're shaking mad, but a little both. Mostly nervous because if you've never been on that bridge. It moves in the wind when you walk across it, it sways back and forth. It all your middle of. You think this thing's gonna fall? I thought I could. And we did I would not again kids. It's I don't know. Feet, maybe three or four could do it. And do they ever test that bridge, and if so how the hell? I'm thinking really we're doing this. We're going it's safe. We get over to the other side of the swinging bridge, your grandfather mountain, and my son is losing his mind. He screaming he wants to run. He wants to get down. "To me. That's a really big deal. And I understand and respect that my husband went to a different college. And I'm happy for him that our kids are being raised that way. Truth be told I don't really care about football the football program when I went to Appalachian state it there wasn't one. There was one. But there wasn't a big deal like this. And then they won the national championships. And that was awesome. That was great. And I'm happy for Appalachian state. That just wasn't the way it was when I was a big deal for you there. Yeah. But I loved I love the town of Boone I love blowing rock and banner, elk and all the ski mountains and Staffel they're beautiful, and that's a really big portion of my life. So when my husband, and I were trying to decide what we wanted to do for our fall vacation getaway for a couple of days. My husband's suggested, well, why don't we take the kids to Appalachian? And I said he. My husband, and I have been married. We have not dating we never went to boom together. Oh, wow. I don't know. We did a lot of NC state tailgating, we went to we go to rally a lot to see his dad and see where my husband went to school and grew up. So this was a really big deal for me to be able to take my kids where I went to school role stopping, you know, and in my mind, I'm thinking, we can go to the Blue Ridge Parkway. The leaves are going to be changing I can show them around campus the ride up to Boone was fantastic. It was great the kids were entertained in the car, they even slept for just a little tiny bit. You know? So I thought this is a great start. We get all the way to grandfather mountain, and we decided that we're going to go up to the swinging bridge. Oh, grandfather, a nice choice when your kids are three and one I knew that I have been several times. But it's been years since I've been I forgot how high it was..

But I loved I love the town of Boone I love blowing rock and banner, elk and all the ski mountains and Staffel they're beautiful, and that's a really big portion of my life. So when my husband, and I were trying to decide what we wanted to do for our fall vacation getaway for a couple of days. My husband's suggested, why don't we take the kids to Appalachian? And I said he. My husband, and I have been married. We have not dating we never went to boom together. Oh, wow. We did a lot of NC state tailgating, we went to we go to rally a lot to see his dad and see where my husband went to school and grew up. So this was a really big deal for me to be able to take my kids where I went to school role stopping in my mind, I'm thinking we can go to the Blue Ridge Parkway. The leaves are going to be changing I can show them around campus the ride up to Boone was fantastic. It was great the kids were entertained in the car, they even slept for just a little tiny bit. You know? So I thought this is a great start. We get all the way to grandfather mountain, and we decide that we're going to go up to the swinging bridge. Oh, grandfather, a nice choice when your kids are three and one I knew that I have been several times. But it's been years since I've been I forgot how high it was..

"Finally, get up to the top. And the kids are so we we have lunch first down at this little area, and they're rightfully so they're very tired, and they're there, but they're also full of energy. You know, what I mean, I know that between and so they want to run they want to go everywhere. And that's the best when on top of a mountain. No. Henry is upset my one and a half year old is upset because he wants to get down. And he wants to run his little legs off and places where you can run off the mouth drops straight. Fence all around it now. So we're picking up Henry, and he's doing that thing where you pick them up, and then he like squirms to get out. Squirming? And then he's screaming at the top off the top of grandfather mountain. And so everybody can hear him. Everyone can hear. So we go across the bridge. I am shaking like a leaf carrying my son Forever's. You're shaking mad but a little boat. Mostly nervous because if you've never been on that bridge. It moves in the wind have you ever been? What's it called again? It's it's the grandfather mountain, it's the swinging bridge. Hi, this is at the top of grandfather mountain, which is above Boone near banner out. But grandfather man, and as an adult is very scary. And it's basically, what are you cable? Yes. Like metal cable that's into the side of the rock. It's beautiful when you're up there. But it's in the side of the rock, and what because of the way it the suspension is of the bridge when you walk across it, it sways back and forth. It all in the middle of you think this thing is going to fall. I thought I could. And we did I would not again with your kids. It's I don't know four feet. Feet, maybe three or four could do it. And do they ever test that bridge, and if so how the hell? I'm thinking really we're doing this. We're going it's safe. Yeah. They have tons of tourists here. Yeah. I just saw floor collapse. Yeah. That would happen. I learned something about that bridge, the grandfather mountain bridge it used to be made out of wood. So people used to go across the day is the more that bridge swings. Anyway, it was a calm day was a beautiful day. We went across we get over to the other side of the swinging bridge grandfather mountain, and my son is losing his mind. He screaming he wants to run. He wants to get down. And all I can do is hold him because he could fall off the mountain. Then you fall off the bridge. Not off the bridge holding water. How high it's up a little bit higher this. Yes. So I'm holding and he's little so I can really grab. Yeah. Yeah. But Nora my three year old was walking along with Ben and the whole time just like go, go go, go go. Back across we're supposed to be having fun here. Right. So then we decide we're finished with grandfather mountain. It was great. We go back down into Boone the kids are really losing their mind at this point, they're tired. They need in that. But you're you don't get a good nap in the car. No, no. We decide let's go to the hotel check in. And let's go have dinner. That was the biggest mistake of our lives. Because we get to dinner and again, my kids are exhausted. And we my husband orders, a beer I order glass of wine. I wish I would have because by the time it arrives. My husband, and I have decided we're not staying here for dinner. The kids are alright down in and out. And you wanna have another fan. Yeah. The waitress comes back over, and I say very sorry to have to do this to you. But we are just going to pay for our drinks, and we're going to be done. So we ended up getting subs from somewhere and go back to the hotel. I didn't travel to Boone Saab hotel room already. This is a big damper were on our way back to the hotel eater subs in her hotel room, and my son in the backseat. It's pitch dark now. My son starts going. Who? And it just starts to project. Asia. To see that he's in his car seat. So he's confined and all he can do is open his mouth, and it shoots out. Oh, my back of the seat it hits all all over him. It's absorbing into his car. I'm buckle were in traffic. We get into the into the parking lot of the hotel and all we can do is get them out. And I just carry him out like. Harry him all the way up to the room. And then my husband has to go out and clean the cars. Aw. He ended up not just cleaning the car seat. He ended up buying these big trash bags carseat and put the car seat in there and bought Nora a new car. Henry is sitting nora's all carseat and Nora got a new course. Okay. Yeah. At that point. We were supposed to go to tweet see railroad the next day, and we had to cancel it. We are supposed to stay in the hotel for another night, we had to cancel it because he's sick or excited that and all the different atmosphere that he just got we're not sure, but I didn't get motion sickness up there. I don't know Nora had a stomach bug about like two weeks ago. And so I don't know. I just did we didn't want to chance it and then to pay all the money, you know. Yeah. The next night and the next day. So we came home early just cut your losses said. So you got there when a grandfather mountain? Yep. Didn't even really check into your hotel room and left. Yup. Oh, my. That was the vacation. The very next. So we stayed one night. Henry threw up all night long. Stomach threw up all night long was the worst night asleep woke up the next day. And we went into the Mass General store in boon to get a few things. And then we headed down the mountain, and I cried the whole way home. Oh, did you really? I was so excited. I yeah. I bet I wanted to get him T shirts. I wanted to take pictures of places that I went as a student, and it just none of it a total nightmare. And now, I don't know the next time will ever go back because you bring it up and your husband be like oh Boone again. That's not gonna work. So anyway, it was nice. I'll just say you can't go back and now I get it. Yeah. You can't ever go back. Go back to the. Can't just pop in with kids and go shopping. You know, everything's a big ordeal. You gotta have the stroller and that the jackets and everybody has to dress. It's. Would you say loving mom? Another one. Yeah. I know. Well, speaking of colleges there was homecoming for Clemson Clemson university beat NC state, by the way, it is. Yeah. I was hoping that you know, like the underdog to win my team, and I'll say oh, NC state. They can win this. Uh-huh. Ben stop watching halfway through. "Stewart. So I climbed mount rainier this summer. And it's interesting how all things work out for the best now about seven and a half weeks ago. I found a spot opened up with rainier mountaineering out in Washington state to attempt to a summit with them. Mount rainier starting July the twenty third and I quickly grabbed the spot with. With just really a very brief window there. Because the spots the close up typically in the fall late fall of the year before and they don't open, but somebody had dropped out. I signed up, and I was not ready now I spent four and a half five weeks climbing old rag mountain if you've ever been down old rag. You know, what a great climate is. And how tough it is on the rocks. It's great climb Roan mountain down in Tennessee grandfather mountain, North Carolina, and frankly, I was climbing office buildings here in the DC region. Twenty story 21-story office buildings to carrying thirty five to forty pounds on my back in order to build up, my stamina mountaineers an eight thousand foot climb from the base to the summit, which is at fourteen four ten it's similar from its base to summit to Mount Everest. In fact, it's a precursor many many mountaineers will go to mount rainier to prepare themselves. Not saying I'm gonna Everest. I'm just saying. That's that's the Similan. Although the altitude is not as high. Now, we start the climb one morning about nine o'clock in the morning, and we climb for six to seven hours up to camp mirror, which is at ten thousand feet. This is from about five thousand feet up to about ten thousand feet. That is very tough climb. You call him about a thousand feet you arrest for fifteen minutes. Drink some water a bunch of food, and then when you get to camp mirror up at ten thousand Europe, there's only snow at this level, you're way above everything else around you, it's a it's an exceptional view even from camp Moore, and you rest, you you repack your bag you put your sleeping bag in. There's a there's a hot which is essentially just planks of plywood inside of a of a plywood box that with two windows at the top that allow cool air to come in, and you and your climbers and your guides all sleep there or try to sleep there for a few hours you wake up at eleven o'clock at night. You get your crampons on your ice. Axe your helmet, your your spotlight on your helmet, and you start climbing from midnight to dawn in order to try to ascend to to renew your summit. Now, see this is really where you know. The the metal really comes in when it comes to climbing because the first climb is in shorts and t shirt and you're carrying a backpack, and you've got your boots on, but you don't need crampons. You're doing it in typical daylight hours, you're fresh from a good good night's sleep. At this point. You're getting up maybe having put your head down around six thirty or seven trying to sleep. But frankly, I didn't sleep if much at all. And you rest, and you get up you eat a bunch of food and you start climbing from midnight you climb from midnight till about one fifteen in the morning. You climb a thousand feet across a field up a stone rock climb and over allege up onto a new icefield you rest for ten to fifteen minutes, you start climbing again, compression, breathing is important, which is breathing in a full breath in and breathing out hard. So you're breathing as much oxygen as possible because the oxygen levels are lower at that level climbed fifteen hundred feet over disappointment cleaver now cleaver just means there is a section of rock that sits about a thousand feet high that separates two parts of what are called the Emmons. Glacier. So it's a cleaver that actually cleaves glacier into two pieces. It's a massive climb in its own right? And then after you climb up to the top of that you continue climbing and snow. And then you finally take a break now before you cross the glacier, and you go around the shoulder the shoulder, you you got ten fifteen minutes. You pound some water the guides all come around and ask everybody, can you do this? Can you make this climb and we've had two or three of the climbers in our group have already bailed at this point because of just exhaustion lack of stamina? And I'm feeling it, folks. It is just it is nothing but a tremendous exhilaration. But also, my legs are feeling it and just sitting down for ten minutes to rest, it just takes everything all that energy all that excitement and pounding you just want to keep going, but you do need to rest you need to eat and drink water. I started up that next hundred yards after I'm convinced. Yes, I can do this. Yes. I will do this the next thousand sorry hundred yards on slogging it digging. My my crampons and my boots into the snow, and I'm making the climb and I'm. Following the pace of everybody. But I forget my compression breathing in about one hundred yards in homelike, HUD, they need to stop. I said it just under my breath just loud enough that I could here. But nobody else heard it after I said it I was like what am I saying? No, I don't I compression breathe. I caught myself. I started compression breathing. And I went as we turn out. I had the energy to focus and would have gone all the way to the summit. But as we crossed the Emmons, glacier and is about four thirty in the morning at this point. We get to the shoulder which is just a turn on the mountain where you climb up over shoulder and you start to make your final ascent to the summit, which is at fourteen thousand we're at twelve thousand six hundred feet in height here. There's a couple of crevasses that we crossed over these giant pits between two sections of a glacier that you know, the glaciers are these giant snowfields that move slowly down the mountain because of gravity and melting ice during the day, which is why we start climbing at midnight to make our summit. Tempt because of the melting ice and snow and the chance for rockfalls, we get to the shoulder and one of the crevasses had a ladder crossing it that the latter had fallen from just the the night before to that point in time because of settlement. There was no way for thirty in the morning that we could put the ladder back into place to cross over that crevasse. So, unfortunately, we were not able to summit the mountain at that time. And it's now the sun is not up, but it's definitely light at four thirty four forty five in the morning. And our whole group is just you know, we're all I mean mildly disappointed, but accepting the fact, hey, safety first, there's nothing we can do we were focused. We could have done this. We know God would have it. We turn around at that point in time and about a thousand fifteen feet a fifteen hundred feet down below us. There is a nother climbing party. That is crossed through a section where we've already been unfortunately for them. This is in an ice field in a rock formation near disappointment cleaver. Unfortunately for them a giant rockfall took place and hit three of their climbers. Actually, one was a guide had his scapula shattered. Another lady had her leg hurt. Another guy was knocked off of the path and into a ravine busted pelvis. We got down ten thousand fifteen hundred feet below our guides went to help the guy who was in the ravine still we went down to where that group had tented before they attempted their summit. We met one of the other guys the one who had a scapula busted. And he pulled us together. He said, look we're going to need to bring a helicopter in here. We need you guys to work with us to make this pad. And we created a twelve foot by nine foot pad in the mountainside. Now remind you this is a mountain. It's got a grade, and we had to dig into the mountainside, and there's plenty of snow, but we had to create essentially a level nine foot by twelve foot snow landing place for this for this helicopter to land to rescue these hurt hikers. Now, folks, if we had summited if we had gone on our way across the crevasse, we would not have been there to help them. In fact, we did dig the platform helicopter came not long after that airlifted the guy out of the ravine with ranger hanging from the bottom of a helicopter brain basket with him lowering it down into the ravine, and then putting him in the basket taking him out and taking him away the helicopter came back and picked up. The other two hikers on that platform. So, you know, climbing mountain doesn't always mean something and like anything in life. It's just exciting to make the attempt to give it your best shot. Sometimes we feel like we're going to run out of breath. And we're not going to be able to get across whatever it is. That mountain is for us that we need to climb. Maybe that's a move for you. Maybe that's downsizing for you. Maybe that's trying to decide what the next step is in your life. Just remember that. There are crevasses that we must cross and sometimes we have to turn around regroup and come again, and that's okay at sometimes when we get turned around. It's for a good reason to help somebody else. Like, we helped those people down below us. Lord has a way of protecting us keeping us safe. And I certainly learned that lesson this summer when climbing mount rainier not.
