"The year make each and everyday count each day is a gift sent out to all of us from Mary Berner our company's CEO the serenity prayer which is a good reminder and a good time to remember it god grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference that's where we are on this Thursday morning with the team the team the team decades there are W. J. R. news director we have in for Brian Morton Mike Parsons handling the board he just found out a couple of hours ago Brian's okay just a little under the weather we're hoping it's what he thinks possibly food poisoning my Kim checking them and the forward me stories along the way and and Thomas are executive producer holding us all together here and have certain Friday go that's right it's a good way to put it Friday eve now with the sad news of the loss of a commander with the Wayne County sheriff's office Dana has a double barrel of of sadness today she knew this sip a commander Donna Faye Collins I think she might be you might be being worked with the Mets for a long time well first early in the in the morning my grandmother who's in New York had been ill for quite some time she was in a nursing home and so she had been slowly fading fading fading but I couldn't get there of course because everything in New York is locked down right so then she passed away yesterday about three o'clock so so you know I know I'm I'm OK because I'm happy that she's not no longer in pain anymore right so I'm thinking I can't get there like you know this thing is like as it gets closer and closer to you forces like wow when you're looking at things from afar but then when they yes and so I was dealing with that calling people and just trying to figure out how they can put our stuff in storage at least until I can get there and you know finish her affairs and everything so then that happened so then later in the evening I was looking at Twitter and I saw that the Wayne County sheriff's commander Donna Faye passed I didn't even know he was ill apparently he had posted things on Facebook that he had pneumonia and that he was getting better and so then when I saw that posting it will eat it even got closer we worked together for many years he was be loved like he was worked at mix on the weekend he was famous for his Friday parties he was a family man wife Renee for children and everyone knew Donna Faye if you don't know him from the radio you knew him I know from working with the White County sheriff's department he was a commander he served the public you were mentioning you know thanking the public for their service he was a public servant and as we've heard so many police officers and those in the you know public sector getting this Kobe nineteen so it was just another heartbreaking blow and I'm thinking wow this is really getting even scarier as we go you know day by day sell condolences and prayers out to his family so it was very rough day for me yesterday but it could always be worse has a good attitude and unfortunately that's what word depending on right now a lot are good attitudes but we'll talk a little bit more about this the commander with the Wayne County sheriff's office succumbing to corona virus of the covert nineteen commander Donna Faye Collins thirty years with the sheriff's office it also would disc jockey on mix ninety two point three until he retired last may was just sixty three and as you mentioned leaves behind a wife and four children always smiling he always had a great attitude and he was a great guy we mentioned also that Bob Allison has passed it was real name was Alice C. but Bob Allison and Maggie out on the social scene in the philanthropic scene for years so our condolences to to Maggie and to the entire family there's a lot going on my friends and interestingly enough life goes on no matter what's going on about all around us there are things that are happening that we're trying to really accentuate the positive when we can and with our relentless positive radio that we've tried to do for quite some time now as first identified by Christopher Ilitch matter of fact meanwhile there are so many places like our friends at on the Alamos they have that buy one get one free when you get to go in there doing it seven days a week noon till eight PM I see something from the Roberts restaurant group with bills Beverly hills grill cafe M. L. road side being G. street side seafood most of those stores are those restaurants open four to eight PM for Kerry out they want you to call in first and you can find them so yeah I I can't list all of the restaurants that are doing that but those are the ones that have wisely sent me notes with reminders of of what they're up to and what they're doing in there it's a lot make coming up today Paul W. I spoke with Mr McCarey so he's going to tell us more about his style on BMO Bogo okay so yeah with David Joe Vicari and yes and rose to leave their their a great family team they are doing what they can do but he's also been quoted as saying you know he doesn't know how long he can do this because of the the the costs involved in they're not generating the kind of money that they did most businesses are not there are a few businesses that are generating even more money but those are far and few between in the eight thirty unemployment numbers are going to be horrible so if people use those as a political weapon today we already know they're going to be bad die right now they're gonna be bad so let's just get that off of our red plate ins and don't use it as anybody uses it as another political bomb should be remembered in November if they're up for election that's just what I'm saying we now know that twenty twenty makanan policy conference is rescheduled for Monday August tenth through Thursday August thirteenth obviously this is a tough decision then the conference chair Ryan my box and the chamber's committee executive committee board of directors Grand Hotel Mackinac Island convention and visitors bureau all of that they have they've decided to I think very correctly to delay the the chamber event you noticed that most of these things now are delayed or postponed but hardly anything canceled at this point and in fact Grand Hotel is made the difficult decision to delay the opening for their one hundred thirty fourth season from Friday may first two Friday may twenty second of Memorial Day weekend and I am hopeful that something that's being worked.

"With our broadcast from historic Grand Hotel, mackinac island, and we welcome onto the show. The man who has thirty let's see thirty three years in here at the Grand Hotel thirty four on August. First man that is impressive. So long time it's almost as long as the Michigan golf lie. It's program here at Granville, tell our twentieth anniversary as a show. Probably in that fourteen to fifteen year range of doing this grand Gulf getaway partnership together. I lost track of the numbers that range somewhere. Amazing mazing house developed, and we're so we should've of the relationship, and it's great to see how Michigan golf lives grown with you Bill, and all the things that you do on television and other things. Twenty years, it's quite remarkable very blessed. And for the first time in our partnership, we're all going to be dressed alike. When our guests arrive in our nice gear say a special, thank you to our friends at cheek who provided thank you Intego Michigan Gulf, live and grant hotel, co branded gear for this trip. Jason's going to look good. Well, every twenty years, we come up with a good idea kit. Wait for the next. So how, how divided is your attention? These days between what's happening here at the hotel, and what's going to happen at two pm Saturday afternoon. Yeah, my Michigan wolverines. The baseball team made it back to the college World Series. I was on the last Michigan team that made it nineteen Eighty-four. We went navy three and eighty four actually, but thirty five years is a long time to wait and it's, it's been really cool. And there's one one thread in the in that a teammate of mind son is on the current team and his dad played on the nineteen sixty two Michigan National championship team. So there's three generations of Kerr's that have all played in the college World Series on be representing the family representing Michigan. Jimmy care better. Get busy, having a kid, so we can get back to the series center. Thirty five glove in his hand right away. Yes. But it's it's really special, and it's it's been great to connect with a lot of we do a letter M letter winters, up here, and some of my teammates that I'm close with come, but we have some group techs going, we're hearing from guys that we quite honestly, haven't really seen much or heard for much thirty five years, and it's pretty cool. And it's a good thing for Michigan baseball. And quite honestly, I think it's good for northern baseball in general the team to the World Series. Yeah. Well, you know, you mentioned that heritage in the generational heritage and it ties in very well to what happens here shirt, so yesterday afternoon, we stopped into say hi Jason. And we went over to the jockey club, to say Hello to Nick, and there was a eighty year old lady celebrating her birthday with her daughter, and all of her other kids are on their way in and she was talking about how special it was for them all to get together here. And that's your life blood. Right. It's the generator connection. Absolutely. And, and a huge market for us. And I think what a what a you know, you wanna have landmark events for your family's at a place that people are gonna remember, remember the special occasion, and I think, you know, thankfully on an island with no cars and the beautiful view from the front porch and the service, we, we give, and I'm sure there's some tradition in that family as well that they've stayed over the years. And it's, it's really what this place is about. And I know you probably have some guests that have come to many, many of the Gulf, live events to in. It's their tradition. It's become their, their family tradition to come to the Goth live event. And I think that's what this place is all about. When you look at the, the drains and the, the music and the hotel, and in the flags and all those things play into the tradition of what granted Tele MAC islands all about. And we love sharing it with guests, and I think multi generational families coming together is, is something that has been become bigger and bigger. And bigger here at tell when we get a chance to visit with our guest, both on the golf course and on the porch during our receptions. I can't even quantify how many times they will say we we're going to bring two or three couples with us next year, and they do and we ended up meeting him. They're like rats hold you. Last year. We were going to bring this is a hallmark weekend on the calendar for a lot of people who come to play a little bit of golf, but mostly to soak in the experience and it goes hand in hand. And I think the thing Bill when we started our relationship twenty years ago, it was about the time that we added the back nine to the golf course, and we wanted to let people know that, that we might not have a, a turnament, caliber golf experience here. But we have a quality off experience, and it is part of this day. And I think what, what your event has done is that. Hello us to share the fact that granted tell is a cough destiny to in. It's very, you know, I, I, I find it hard to believe that there's a course now with all the changes that drew Butterfield with Jason's advice. Have made I find I would find it difficult to find a course and I know there's some popular ones that say they have great views but the views this course has is unbelievable. And it's an experienced player golf course. Yeah. In your event has helped us get that word out. Is it fair to say that twenty twenty five years ago, golf at Grand Hotel was an amenity much like this wing pool where you can do it is here, actually swimming pools. Nicer. True. So it wasn't it wasn't a focus now it was focus, and it has an commitment to the, you know, the Musser family to, to Jerry Matthews redid the course back in nineteen eighty seven he did the, the new back nine of the course in nineteen. Ninety-three. And that commitment to the Gulf made. It take the first step. But I think than turning drew loose and letting him make some changes that needed to be made. And, you know, the view from the seventh t that wasn't there before opening up even the view from five t the improvement in the green speeds, you know, used to be that, you know, the greens really didn't roll real fast drew does all the right things to get the greens and great plain shape. And, you know, I, I would argue that Jason can speak to it more than I because he hits so much further tonight. But with the small greens, and the thick rough, it is not an easy golf course right now. Jason does it further than both of us? But combined. Yeah. I don't doubt that should be getting worse. Play against an actual PGA professional. Right. I think does that mean though that whatever team he's on automatically wins. Whatever competition. He's not actually. That's why say it's not easy to score and you still got a putt, and like I said the Russ long. And when you you know, you gotta hit it straight. I think you gotta hit greens. And then you got to figure out how the greens break here in, you know, the joke is they outbreak to- towards the water, which is to say on an island because you're not wrong, but really, you know there's the brake on the front nine to towards downtown. I think and I think he's still got to get the ball in the whole matter. What and you know, anytime you get the competitive juices flowing little bit. Well, you get the trash talking going little bit and people tighten up a little bit. It's amazing. What can happen last September? This is the first time I've had one microphone last September. Jason I were against you and I think, drew drew Butterfield. Yeah. In a match here on the grand nine and it came down to a pot on number nine you were above the whole twenty feet away. If you miss it goes all the way down into the fairway. I remember now. Yeah. Well, because I remember a big tiger rest. Went in, in Jayson. I both had like a five four tie the whole, and somehow somehow it broke towards the water as I said, you gotta get the ball in the whole matter what. So it's kind of kind of fun. But those are great. You know, those are great. I mean golf, you play you go out and play with friends. You spend time with friends, you get an a little rivalry do fun things. And in for me, it's, you know, two great release up here when you work all the time. But I think what it shows is that, you know, the golf experience here Grand Hotel, when you when you get quality quality greens going, and you get scenic views going, it's a great experience. And you know, like the put you described. I mean if it didn't go in it would have gone off the front of.

"Other icicles on the turtle turtles. Okay, right. We've double-checked we make it a little colder in the room. Then when we came in. It was like kind of like an oven. I do see I see a fish in the tank is actually shivering which had never seen before. And there's a turtle swimming sideways, not upside down doing back strokes. But anyway, at the shy Wasi national wildlife refuge established in nineteen fifty three ten thousand acres of Marsh. Bottomland hardwood forest grasslands authorized by the migratory bird conservation commit. Mission under the migratory bird conservation act preserving and managing and undeveloped expansive, flood plain forest, marshes rivers and associated habitat. It's a wonderful place that is here and dick as you. And I have mentioned we've we may have heard of it. But never really knew what what the show Wasi national wildlife refuge was all about worth green point environmental learning center in designated as the United States important bird area for its global significance to migratory waterfowl. It's all right here, basically in our backyard. Yeah. And that's something. And it's all thanks to all the water that we have around here. All water based lot of those birds are waterbirds. And this is why we send you out to explore these things we learn about them for the first I right in our backyard. Yep. It's a learning experience for all of us. I just heard Mr. announcers say sixteenth annual. And I think we've done it from many more years. They I it's been years. We've been doing this because we wanted to initially before it was pure Michigan. We were promoting the great state of Michigan. So I don't know when pure Michigan started that slogan or whatever, but it was before that also get a note here about if you wanna preserve birds. Avoid palm oil a direct connection between the choices we make consumers, and what's happening in our biodiversity under the headline that that your coffee choice could save a black pool. Warbler? So that's something you might want to. "Available through the Dodd words. Saxon band in our wonderful guests let me just let that play for a second. Many. Thanks to migrate producer, Derek stone. Looking at me. So the double glass and making sure everything is running. All right, particularly it's fabulous music, which he produced for me, and that's supplied. And Joe supply the music to me. It sounds absolutely wonderful. Welcome Beth Mitchell and Joe Dumars to speaking of art. Thank you. It is a delight to have you back Beth and to be able to speak with you Joe. It's been several years when I said beloved emeritus teacher of music at the great tap in middle school in Ann Arbor. I mean that anybody who attended any of Joe's many concerts with the inspiration. He was able to give to students of all ages in that wonderful middle school in Ann Arbor. I've got several of them on my phone for prosperity. You heard the reaction at the end of every one of those concerts to Joe's, dedication, and the love for him from his various audiences and their students, and parents it's wonderful to have you here. Also. Well, thank you, very much, very lucky to have a great run at tappan and with the schools for many years and a great musician for many years, and you've inspired so many people, you know, about their musical instruments and pursued music, which is so important. I know we'll we'll get into that. Beth we've spoken at least I think maybe three times in the past for your fat, cozy Fantuzzi, I think was the first time we spoke over and Sullivan. Productions that you have been in. I saw one of them last year, which was absolutely fantastic. One of the rehearsals, which was just great. Tony Fennell good friend of mine is one of the area's great trombone. It was really something to be able to sit in and watch that rehearsal take place. You are a consummate musician. Your voice is just talk about a Nightingale of Michigan you or internet. I'm so glad to have you back here. I know you also manage the wonderful Pierre Paul fine arts gallery in Ann Arbor. And I hope Lee is listening and a big shout out. Hello to Lee and MRs g for providing Ann Arbor with one of the greatest areas where you can buy one of the greatest galleries where you can buy fine today by contemporary artists. We have a lot of wonderful artists that Pierre Paul art gallery, and I'm inspired everyday by all the bright colors and beauty. That's that that they provide us. Stop by everybody. I'll tell you a sponsor of my program once a few years ago and Beth gave me a great tour. Of the exhibitions that are there right now. And the best thing is you can own the art the show that's up right now is actually called juxtapose, and we called it that because it's a really nice blend of both contemporary and more traditional painting. So we have everything from realism to abstract and so come on. And there's something for everybody. Thank you. You know, I was so conservative everybody in my introduction. I just wanted to list a few things right now the Dodd worth sax horn band where they had been featured let me just list a few of them, Ken burns, documentaries baseball and jazz. They they performed at the White House at the invitation of president and Mrs Clinton, they performed at the great American brass band festival and danville Kentucky, also I'm skipping a few the Victorian ball for the centennial of the Grand Hotel mackinac island. I think we covered that actually on the show with the president then talking about the history of mackinac island and the Grand Hotel greenfield village. The Henry Ford museum, of course in Dearborn. The wonderful Rutherford b Hayes presidential library in Fremont, Ohio and everybody you probably see the sign for it. Every time you're driving across Ohio on the wonderful turnpike. If you have extra time you want to go there. It's one of the really great early presidential museums the Midland center for the performing arts and the h h. Dow museum in Midland Michigan. The nineteen ninety baseball hall of fame induction ceremonies in Cooperstown. The Michigan school band and orchestra association university of Michigan school of music and Arbor the Thanksgiving Day parade in Detroit. Michigan the golden age of bans festival in vermillion. South dakota. The Cheboygan opera house also and the band appeared on Detroit public TV's backstage pass and NPR's weekend addition. Wow. Those are real credentials. We're going to talk about the Warren band, how it began in the mid nineteenth centuries. But I have got to ask a very fundamental question because the fundamental sometimes go out of my, and I think about other things very teric things. I'll talk about talk about the obvious thing. At in the obvious thing is what is a sax horn. I'm gonna let Joe take this one. I have one in here. And I will say it's almost as Jodie Marsh. Brought in a mastodon skeleton in brought right in here. It is unusual. It is all inspiring. But in working order in working order. That's a sax horn, please. Describe it Joe for the worst. Sax horn is a generic term for instruments from this time period. Adolph sax was very famous instrument inventor into line of work developing instruments. Perhaps you're familiar with his more successful instrument. The saxophone quite a bit different than what are being uses. Saxophone are made a brass just like ours, but have reads and that vibrate to produce the sound and with your fingers you open and close a series of keys, which are covered by patents cover, the tone, holes are instruments are totally different made a brass the same way. But we use a Cup shaped mouthpiece and buzzer lips. To produce the sound and use valves to change the length of the tubing to change pitches. Now these incidents were developed for military use and the most distinctive thing about many of the instruments in our band is the direction of the bell the bell. Of course, being the flared out part with music comes out, many of them, go either straight outlook, a traditional modern trumpet or cornet or up in the air like a modern to or euphonium, but many of them point backwards, or as we come over the shoulder or backward blasters as they were called in the day. And then those were set up specifically to aim the music backwards because the band would March at the front of the army is they're going down the road from town town, they've got this long long column of soldiers in an order for everybody to hear the music and San step. They put the band in the front with the bells and backwards. So they could be heard now sometimes if they came across the enemy wasn't too healthy for the band, but that's the breaks. And you know, what I had not seen one of those instruments before the modern or and I know we're going to talk about that with the Stearns collection later on the interview, but the idea of seen a horn this large, but so beautifully crafted. And then the fact that you have it over your shoulder and a half to imagine that the musicians would have had some kind of a almost like a saddle blanket or something over their shoulders, if they were going to be marching for a long straps, and so on but to have it over your shoulder going out probably three or four feet and that sound as you're passing by reviewing stand or something let me just ask a question in in both of you. What was going on in America? At this time say the eighteen forties when the Dodd Dodd worth brothers started in New York. To create the venues for this kind of music. How important was it for the American audience to be able to see music like this? What were some of the occasion where you know, where it would have sort of like been important for communities? Well, every occasion nowadays where we can easily pull up recorded music for whatever you want whenever you want. If you wanted music, you need live band back then any sort of ceremony. Solemn more festive any sort of recognition they'd have a live band on. I think one of the really big things would have been dances dances were very important to society in the nineteenth century. That's where you would have met your future somebody or to be seen, you know, by the other people in society, and there are a lot of the pieces that the band plays are different dances, like Gallup's or poke are various other things like that. So they were very important for those social occasions as well. And of course, during the civil war. I imagine the patriotic aspect would have come to the fore, either public, concerts, and parks or marches and all that keep people inspired. Well, and actually the Dodd worth band played for several presidential inaugurations including that for Mr. Lincoln. And that is fascinating to me that this instrument, please go ahead. Joe, I it's your thing. I mean, this one tell us the you think it was this is a bass sax horn pitched in the key of e flat. It stands about five feet tall. If I just set it on one end up next to me when I play it. It goes horizontal sticking out several feet behind me. The bass voice. The lowest voice we have in the band. This one was built in eighteen sixty by Christian starker in New York. Eighteen sixty eight hundred sixty in the band acquired it from the US marine band in Washington DC, the president's own which place for all the inaugurations, and you know, presidential events and through that and some photographic evidence. We believe this instrument was played at Abraham Lincoln's second inauguration that is absolutely incredible. The second inaugural in would have been in March eighteen sixty five and correct. Just a month before I think so is assassinated that is absolutely incredible. Why don't we not keep the audience waiting too much longer? Joe? I mean, I I don't think that that instrument is going to have any trouble at all filling the space of the broadcast studio here at WAM if the other show was able to hear it down the hall when you were in my office, ladies and gentlemen, this is Joseph tomorrow. A member of the Dodd worth Saxon band playing in eighteen sixty sacks Orne here in the studio..

"Very rigid about you know when. They were doing what or at least telling us that so I, thought that there's more flexibility so you know Mike Meles job is going to be execute the plan, that he had a big hand in developing we'll let's point, out that Mike's been doing that especially at Jeep. With. Great success for nearly a decade I mean it's it's I. Forgotten that, he got that job back. In two, thousand nine right right and then he also took on the job for Asia, Pacific in so global so he's so the five year plan focuses on, four major brands with ram. Jeep being the two biggies and also Maserati and Alfa Romeo and the global less. Of is in that plan And the big focuses on prophet profitability so. Profit margins with all those brands when you when you look ahead In the? Ensuing five, years or, maybe beyond what kind of storms might Mike Manley confront that, you'll have to ride out I mean Alfa, Romeo. I think you and I would agree that the automotive portfolio it's beautiful But the brand hasn't delivered on Sergio's big promises has no it has not but I I think bigger picture I you know some of the he's going to hit some. Challenges right away I. Mean the, first one is today there the head of Europe for Fiat Chrysler step. Down because he had been considered to be. In line, for the. CEO job so that that's a big job he's got. To, cover you know we're facing a trade. Tariffs situation that is could really hurt. Fiat Chrysler so he's going to have to address. That and yes you know, and the other thing is the Chrysler Dodge Fiat brands? We're we're not talked about a lot there they've sort of become smaller local brands so their future is a little bit in question and of, course you know what will the economy do as as you look ahead who are the other rising stars? That Mike Manley might, tap either for Europe or to take on a greater share, of the Load for Jeep and ram. Because I assume, that, he'll relinquish those. Titles I, would imagine an and. And, think about, this I mean, if if there's any good that came out. Of any, of this the succession plan was in the works so it you know we knew we were going to get a replacement for Mark and I would imagine they had a plan for back. Filling some of those. Oppositions unfortunately, didn't roll out as smoothly as hoped but I think there's I I. Don't can't name names necessarily and certainly not. As familiar, with Europe. But I think they've developed a bench and I think. There's, been a lot of thought giving to. Given to you know who will succeed. As the others move up in the meantime I. Know you join me in, wishing Sergio Marchi Honeywell and his family sounds like there's? A there's what with is tantamount to a vigil underway to Swiss hospital and we'll hope that those reports out of Italian presser Are more grim than, they need to be because we we'd like, to, see, him back here in Detroit and like, to see him so playing a role in this industry wouldn't it, have been nice if he got some retirement time with Yeah. We'll give you hope that the that, the reports are not as bad as they appear that's for sure Yes Michelle was a pleasure I haven't seen in forever but thanks, for joining us Thank you all right Michelle Krebs auto trader dot com the executive analysts and we'll be back if I always marvel.
