I know it's not something else the northern islands of grand Bahama an abba Cole were devastated as are the ones that we had that is completely closed to tourists that's where all the help is that's where our friend is there that's delivering water getting generator that and all this kind of stuff but paradise and New Providence islands connected by a bridge served by the NASA airport those are far they were far enough south to escape the south or the storm okay other southern destinations that are also okay Exuma Andross allude to islands okay also like the big like Atlanta's that's open you know the one Sheraton. many of the most popular resorts are open and according to the government of the Bahamas tourism is fifty percent of their gross domestic product so don't cancel your traps if you're going to places that aren't affected a visitor stays at a hotel you have a sure again you buy souvenir you pay some taxes to us it's just a vacation but to the by Amy ends it helps on the road to recovery we said this too for Porter Rico Elaine Thomas in. those islands to fifty percent so sun country has no plan to alter its recently announced flights to now so we haven't had direct flights to NASA in like seven years later a long time in fact it there's the early booking sale now through September twenty third on a lot of sing country but one way tickets Minneapolis and NASA hundred eighty nine dollars gosh and the weekly Saturday flights because it'll just be a Saturday Saturdays you haven't days fourteen days that starred December twenty first firing that's when the service starts but yes so its grand Bahama island in Abaco islands that are devastated the other plan does you know. Bahamians look for way off storm-ravaged island as death toll climbs

"Authorities in the bahamas say they are expecting even more horrible news in the wake of hurricane dorian medical staff telling c._n._n. As they treat the many wounded that they are dreading and bracing themselves to learn how many are dead the storm killed at least thirty people by last official count but given the overwhelming damage to the islands and the hundreds of people who remain missing behaving officials believed the real death toll is quote quote unimaginable new video. Today gives an example of hurricane durians forest. You're looking right now at a hummer. That's around six thousand pounds. The the powerful floodwaters picked up that vehicle and slammed it through the side of house during his currently off north carolina's outer banks as a category one hurricane still flooding towns and knocking out power but it is the bahamas reeling from total disaster the u._s. coastguard alone has rescued get more than two hundred people there. A helicopter crew described seeing the avocado islands in the bahamas for the first time. The town was just looks like a landfill saw. The houses were dismantled. It was trash everywhere in ever c._n._n.'s patrick ofman reports parts for us now from the bahamas where he tells us he was struck by the silence and the destruction and the stench of death areas of of grand bahama island means driving through still flooded streets demand streets that are no longer streets. This area in the east of the island highland has until now been inaccessible since the storm little to no help has arrived the force of the hurricane through cars through buildings the storm orbital out here the category five leveling whole towns many rode out the storm in their homes. Many did not survive pastor. Joey saunders was on the third floor of his home with his son. When the storm surge crashed in these saturday make out to the second floor of the house and been put ten minutes in aside to flow to the third floor you know in the modern that flow optima head and we felt like strong current trying to break loose everything he cracks and this was in the middle of the night one thirty in the morning and then the current was so strong then the roof sarah to lift a nest thing i remember i was underneath the water my son's getting i noticed he had to searched like i guess he just disappeared socially and i heard him screaming daddy daddy daddy. He was in the water at that point right. He's ready gone in minutes later. When i came on the water i tried my hand. I caught onto the trust and re roof carried mealy so we will lake but six hundred feet away away from each other's for two days and be caught up into the pine tree with thirty two feet high surf the water carried. You know pine tree in the middle of the night. Your son was a ways away from you. What was going through your mind. You must have been terrified. Yes i was hoping that he was alive and he thought i had also also wasn't tells you know the two days later that'd be so he was under the trailer idea not sold another government has warn warn people the death count could spike in places like iraq where everyone knows of dead or missing family and neighbors that news is no surprise even though this is one of the hardest hit areas help from the government is yet to arrive either. The government is on his way. He doesn't take a bit of time. Can you are the settlements but they do anything. Gradually you know. Do you wish they were moving quicker. I yes i wish it can move quicker. People desperately need food and water before time time runs out a lot of lost most of their clothes water food basics right now. It and we are in the town of hierarchy. This is where dorian category five came in installed. These people had category five winds for over for four hours. They say behind me what house just had the front of it knocked in and it was completely flooded. Believe it or not this used to be a neighborhood. There was house after house <music> after house. They were all gone. There were three people who were in this house. A mother her daughter and a granddaughter houses swept away into the ocean knows where they are. They are officially listed as missing but residents say they fear that most likely they were swept in the ocean and it will never be seen again throughout the day. We've seen helicopters coast guard helicopters hovering over spots in this area residents say that's how they know. Another body has been found and the grim work continues and at this point we're told by residents. They don't expect for anymore survivors to be jake patrick ottoman. Thanks so much for that story c. n. N.'s paula newton joins me now live from a different part of the islands <hes> she's at an airfield in nassau which is now being used as a staging area for aid and rescue rescue teams in paula. I mean frankly it could take years for the bahamas to recover from this. If ever the bahamas will be for for many decades likely transformed by this and the reason is that you were dealing with islands and keys that are isolated at times spanning over several hundred miles this says the deployment area unfortunately jake and not for lack of trying with the aid effort has been in fact spotty and chaotic you have that mix of both government and volunteer aid and given they they said how widespread the needed the need is it is difficult to really ascertain if people are getting everything that they need and when we first start with the basics the food in the water then there's people who need to be evacuated and then as patrick just told you in very grim detail there is search and recovery and that search and recovery mission is also very important gordon because it keeps away disease that call listen. We're here in nassau. This is also where they're bringing evacuees. I spoke to elizabeth nixon. I mean her story about. Even getting outta here was crazy. They put the kids or nieces and nephews in coolers to get them out but after that they had to split up at the airport in marsh harbour what happens some of them came here. Those children with some relatives tips are still at the airport tick. Listen to elizabeth nixon. Those babies can't stand minute avenue eaten last night. They said there was an airport and they they at the airport right now. Daily front that is so chaotic you know if those will catch trying to push through a lot you know the issue here is that she saying it's frantic that is not the way on day six that you wanna see all of this unfold and she's desperate because she knows that those children have not eaten. She knows they do not not have water. Jake <hes> listen the challenge ahead. It is quite significant all right paul. Thank you so much for that reporting <hes>. Let's go now to dr caroline burnett galloway. She's on the phone from the bahamas. Choose the medical chief of staff at princess margaret hospital which is the only hospital in nassau still able to treat critical all patients in the entire bahamas <hes> doctor. Thank you for joining us first of all. How are you doing. How are you holding up. How is your family. Thank you jake <hes>. My family is fine. <hes> and we're all rolling up with is a great team effort. It's it's tiring. It's exhausting <hes> <hes>. It's the most traumatizing hearing some of the stories of our patients that come in but we have to keep going. You're the only one taking critical patients right now. How in in nassau how strained or your resources we've come together and and deployed stop and me shepherd through that we're managing. <hes> initial wave of critical patients from arbuckle has they've come in. We've admitted taken them to the operating freaking there too if necessary i know the second wave of the walking wounded are coming in initially they came by koos guard helicopter and the airports so now open to regular plates are bringing more patients in but <hes> with with very strict and tight triage resorts in the patient offending them to a public health clinic or after come into this. Don't you told c._n._n. That you're treating the wounded right now but preparing for the dead you believe that the death toll is is much higher than thirty right correct. How much higher do you think it might be i. I can't estimate but it's going to be high. We are preparing some people coming to you. <hes> have been trapped in their homes in some cases on top of their homes for days on end. What kind of you've conditions are they. In by the time they get to you so dehydrated exhausted <hes> emotionally exhausted i <hes> <hes> somehow metabolic abnormalities from the long exposure and they had a chronic illness like diabetes hypertension. Do be out of control dr caroline brunette caraway. Thank you for the work you do and thank you for your time

'Total devastation': Hurricane slams parts of the Bahamas

"Will thank heavens hurricane Dorian is finally moving off the Bahamas it just sat there moving like a mile an hour over the whole Bahamas and they got hit really bad there was a life threatening storm surge of up to fifteen feet expected on grand Bahama island and Floridians were freaking out I have family in you know fort Lauderdale and clear water in you know not knowing if the hurricane was going to start moving towards Florida move out to sea I will I am blown away at how they could predict hurricane movement and they predicted that after the bombers it was going to make a right turn I mean it made a beeline it was going to do west I mean street west and then. it's stalled and rather than moving towards Florida is designed to make a right turn and now it is moving up the coast. but still gave huge punches to the Bahamas there's a door is when the tent city has backed off now it's down to a category two I thought I saw just recently was a three still but I think they just downgraded to a two. but now we're worried about the Florida Atlantic coast parts Georgia the Carolinas and even southeast Virginia. and so right now it's still near grand Bahama island the eye wall is pummel the island since Sunday night destructive winds catastrophic storm surge some of the pictures are coming in the Bahamas it is devastated just devastated. it basically had the bombs for over forty eight hours started the apple goes island Sunday morning. settlement point had sustained winds of sixty one miles an hour gusting up to eighty two miles per hour. and right now I believe the speed is down to about a hundred twenty miles per hour of the actual hurricane. and now Florida coast is scenes of destructive damage because of I mean it's about eighty miles from the coast and so you know the waves are huge. beach erosion has already Curtis flats at Flagler beach. National Weather Service weather channel meteorologist Jim Cantore document a damaged homes on Hutchinson island why because of pounding surf squall from out of perfume Dorian continue to wrap into parts of the Florida peninsula. because one visit force winds there now miles an hour arrived at Juno beach Florida. that's going to continue with gusts over sixty miles per hour to Tuesday outer rain bands are also still you know flooding the area and we could possibly have tornadoes along the coast so we have hurricane warnings right now in effect in Florida from Jupiter inlet to punch Verde beach including Mel born in Daytona beach Florida the warning is now but extended to South Carolina from north of at least beach to south Santee river in a hurricane warning still remains in effect for grand Bahama the abacus islands northwestern Bahamas include Freeport and grand Bahama. so hurricane warnings meaning that hurricane force winds remember category one is seventy four miles an hour so hurricane warnings mean that those winds are either already Corinne or expected somewhere within the warning area and that's going to be within a thirty six hour time frame. so a storm surge warning has been issued from land Tampa Florida to south Santee river South Carolina and that includes Daytona beach Jacksonville beach St Simons Tybee island Charleston South Carolina. so you know you would you would watch the weather I was I was glued to the weather channel all weekend and you would see people. walking behind a meteorologist sorry. I don't want to laugh at all because you know what people were doing they were trying to recreate those videos that are online have you guys seen those videos where you have. meteorologist reporters that are trying to look like they're holding on. and you know to find the winds and trying to you know hold their balance and they're screaming in the wind and then you see people walk behind them with an ice cream cone and wave like high. I right or you know I think there was one reporter that tried to claim this weekend that bodes in Florida were already push the shore by the storm. add their all these things being pushed on to the beach and you actually saw the votes are all tied up neatly and it was nice people walking by and you know even in you know smile and things like that and so clearly there's a lot of like you know whether reporting gone wrong people in a boat there's one I forget was one of those Kitty current but somebody was in a boat looking like she had to paddle around and then somebody walked right by her. in a single deep water. it all and then so it you know we know that you know the weather channel these meteorologist they have a job to do and storms are life threatening and they need to get people out and so they're not gonna show a person in a nice dry area tell everybody it's scary they're going to kind of show you know what they need pictorials because some people they just don't evacuate they just leave. Floridians a lot of them did not evacuate them they you know they were waiting for the hurricane advisory to blows my mind that the same age we could be that accurate I mean we were actually it was I was like I don't see how it's going to head towards Florida's commit towards Florida. so you don't think that it didn't hit Florida unfortunately you have that whole coast. that could get hit you know there's an argument that averages one across Florida in a day. we would cause less damage then riding up the coast to Jacksonville Charleston Wilmington Hatteras so the you know so you know we think it's going to be hitting and not really leaving are closed until Sunday heading areas near main and etcetera and at it's a battle on this was bad five people dead so far we're gonna be unfortunately hearing more as the crews are able to get into the Bahamas fully understand the devastation was just enormous this week as NASA but the nation week a lot of people in the Bahamas and Florida you know can't donate blood the Carolinas etcetera because a worried about the the storm and and blood shortages are expected that to happen especially after the bad summer NASA but the nation because the first week of September and as for governors from across United States United to you know help

"The Mike Gallagher show show her cake Kane Dorian has just devastated the Bahamas it's some of the video on the images coming out of the Bahamas has been horrific the storm is now finally making it's much advertised turn to the north northwest away from the Bahamas finally and headed towards the U. S. mainland we're is expected to bring significant impacts according to The Washington Post the storm is moving northwest at to miles per hour just to the north of grand Bahama island and the continuing its historic on slot in the northwestern Bahamas now the storm's peak winds have dropped it's now been downgraded to still formidable category two storm but it has grown as such so even though the Windsor last the the the the the size of the storm is greater. as you know it slammed into northwestern Bahamas over the weekend. satellite images are yeah I mean good grand Bahama island has suffered an onslaught the few places on earth have ever experienced. I mean grand Bahama island was in the eye wall of this major category four or five storm for over thirty XIX hours. course the I wall is the region of the storm surrounding the center the contains the strongest winds according to Washington post this is a strong that may have reshaped the northwestern Bahamas particularly alcohol and grand Bahama island for decades and now you know Florida is bracing. hurricane warnings and watches have been posted from the Florida coastline northward to South Carolina hurricane conditions are forecast to move into the warning area of Florida Tuesday evening so later tonight and affect areas farther north beginning Wednesday. now in the southeast the impact from hurricane Dorian does not look nearly as dire as what the Bahamas just went through computer models are in agreement in keeping the most destructive core of the storm off shore parallel to the coast line. show that's that's where we are right now the storm is forty five miles northeast right now a free port on grand Bahama island moving north west again at two miles per hour the the the storms peak disdain winds are hundred and ten miles per hour. and Dorian is expected to maintain its current intensity through Wednesday is kind of interesting I I I'm I'm a new. resident of Florida I I've I moved to the Tampa Bay area back in. April and I've never experienced a hurricane before never lived through it wasn't going to come here and then when I found out the door and was going to shift to the east I thought well I'll come you know to stay in the condo and keep an eye on things and it's interesting on the Gulf side.

Hurricane Dorian Thrashes Bahamas as East Coast Braces for Storm

"Now our main story this morning. Hurricane dorian at crawled over grand bahama island yesterday after tearing through the island's prime minister hubert minutes said police had confirmed at least five people have been killed as a result of the storm in the midst of for historic tragedy in parts of northern bahamas mission and focus now is such rescue and recovery. I honestly oppress for those in affected areas and for our first responders the powerful storm is now expected near florida later today to find out more about dorian including why the path of the storm has been so hard to predict as well as a new debate eight about whether the category system used to rank hurricanes needs to be revised. I rang up aaron elworthy. She's our natural disaster correspondent. I cover. I cover hurricanes wildfires tornadoes. So what do we know about the impact that durians hat on the bahamas so the damage in the bahamas we know about right now is is that about thirteen thousand homes may have been damaged or destroyed and that has meant that a lot of people are in shelters on the islands and where is it headed added next while so the storm is expected to approach <hes> what forecasters are saying we'll be dangerously close to the florida coast and then it will head up the coastline sort of parallel in it. They think <hes> pass georgia and into the carolinas. Why is it been so hard to track this storm. The it's really hard to track because the hurricane is moved by other forces wind currents high and low pressure systems that sort of batted around so it's at the mercy of those things and any any minute change range in those conditions can affect where it will go. Even if it's been hard to talk there are some hints from the past you talked about one hurricane in particular sure one of the ones that people have been most reminded of watching dorian is hurricane matthew from twenty sixteen which had a very similar path it approached florida. It remained offshore. It went up toward georgia into the carolinas. It made landfall in south carolina as a as a category one but it still managed to do a lot of damage before made that landfall at some close to oh eleven billion and it was also a deadly storm and killed forty nine people. Who've let's hope that doesn't happen this time around. Let's also talk a little bit about something else. You've highlighted this ranking system for hurricanes during was a category five. It's since been downgraded from that max level but you talk a little bit about debate. That's come as a result of this hurt so category five is basically as you mentioned the the highest rating and it's defined mind as causing catastrophic damage now when we get a storm like dorian which is pretty historic. It's it's very intense. <hes> it it often prompts discussion about whether we need a a higher rating for storms <hes> meteorologist though are are basically of the mind that you can't really get anything worse than catastrophic damage but they say it's worthwhile to talk about how we describe rob storms and how we rela- what their risks are because the category really only talks about hurricane sustained wind speed lead and there are so many other risks are risks from rainfall and flooding there are risk from storm surge and riptides all of that that kind of stuff and so people they say shouldn't just look at a a storms category and say oh. It's a category sirri arena five so i'll stick around with they really need to consider is is where they live whether they might be in the path of that storm surge or that flooding leading if it occurs and factor those things in when they're making the decisions about when to when to evacuate whether to evacuate that kind of thing so what do you think is the main takeaway from current forecasts forecasters emergency officials <hes> they're all warning the people that they need to remain alert just because the storm's center is not going to to hit land at least as it's currently currently forecast to along the us doesn't mean that its effects won't be felt. This is a large storm so it's it's winds and the storm surge urged that sends into the coast. <hes> could still be significant. You can find our ongoing coverage of hurricane dorian up on wsj.com.
