"W Jenny, we're talking a Grammy and Golden Globe nominated artists Frank Stallone. His new documentary is called Stallone Frank, that is you moved to California and and that's when things really started kicking up for you. And you talked about this a little bit. Your brother was part of Ah Low budget film, which surprises me to this day to hear you say that it was a low budget film called Rocky, Low budget, and they needed some street singers and you've got a call. Yeah. I mean, like a low budget. I think you know, behind the green door cost more. Okay, So you know, it was just a really low budget movie and I was going musician he knew You know, basically, and that's how it was. It wasn't like, okay, we're gonna find the greatest act. It's just like, OK, we were cheap and I have had experience singing on a street corner and That's how it happened. I mean, we really at first didn't want to do it, You know, because well, I want to do the rest abandoned. Want to do it? Because we're making 140 bucks in this gig for the whole band? Yeah. Which shows you how? How, right we were. So he said, OK, we'll give you 148. So we're getting 100 for he goes no 140 each so that was like three weeks. Wages for us. You know, if you figure you have a five piece band again, $140 back then $28 off the top for your managers. That doesn't leave you too much to split five ways. $20, you know a night. So 56 nights a week. It's not that was running, so we weren't like You know, we weren't like a good catch for all the good looking girls for sure. But then record deals. He came quickly. Appearances on Mike Douglas. Dina Midnight special. I mean, which was which was the hot Rock show. I mean, really, things took off. Oh, yeah. Things cook off. All of a sudden someone had the brilliant idea. Not me at all The change the name of the group that Frank Stallone and balance I, which I was very It was very uncomfortable. Yeah. You know, we were really good friends and we've been together and we all wrote sang. You know, I mean, I hand picked this crew from all my friends that we're all really good singers and good players. And we came to that They kind of agreed, but I was very uncomfortable. I didn't like it one bit because I felt a kind of I don't know. It's just to put a little bit of a wage of with the band and then, but they didn't blame you for it. That's the thing they didn't didn't blame you for it. They never really pointed fingers and was upset about it, but it bothered everybody, including yourself. Well, Yeah, bothered me because you know, I just may be uncomfortable even though I did thing a lot, and I was kind of front guy, but but I was the front guy even before Rocky came out. So what? It was a little different, though, when the movie came out But, you know, we're good friends eventually, you know all the sudden after the rocky fanfare Slow down. We got dropped from our label. Uh, gigs weren't coming in. The group broke up and I went from doing midnight special. We're playing the ground round for like $30 a night by myself. Talk about eating crow in your own town. Oh, I was just I said, man, I don't know if I'm going. You know, I met this point like 28 29. My brother. Somebody just come to California. Forget it, You know, I mean, just come to California. I got a place you could stay because I had no money. So I drove about California and I've been out here ever since. And you know that. But you know, when I first came to California, and nothing was really happening that great. It wasn't like great shakes, you know? I mean, I was a stand in for my brother and rocky three on and you know, I'm just doing trying to put some local gigs together just by myself. And this was it was going nowhere fast and then, you know, Later on, staying alive. Thing happens to say staying alive was huge. I mean, here comes far from ever the song was nominated for Golden Globe Award for best original song. So you talk about the ups and downs. I mean, you can't that that was huge. That was great for me. That was great for me. That was a culmination of 18 years like knocking around town and playing and stuff, But yeah, that was that was really big and then In that faded I did a solo album and the soul of my thought was really good, but didn't do well and I got dropped again. I said, How come everyone else got three album deals but make you know it was just like, so I had that. I mean, I hate to point fingers, but I had to say it was management. They just Couldn't wise medication, you know, just couldn't You know, there's one thing about doing local gigs. There's another thing about doing, you know. The big ones, you know and just seem like they could make it happen. And so then it was just a lot of drifting and all that stuff like that playing music, Frank picking up gigs doing movies when I can, but it was kind of. I mean, it was definitely depressing. I mean, after you go from, you know all of a sudden. Being a knock around guy, and then all of a sudden, you know you're getting all this respect, songwriters and people that you admired and then it all stops well, and you were always known in your entire life is a musician. There was, of course, the time as you mentioned that he became Rocky's brother, which wasn't fucking You weren't even Sylvester Stallone's brother. You Iraqis, Brother? Yeah, Fictitious person, brother, you know, but but again, coming back with staying alive, and I love the clip..

"What i first met jose feliciano it was the year nineteen eighty six. It was a concert of his in california. And i was doing my first ever interviewed him now at that time was leon was one of the most famous latinos that i had ever met and what i remember the most was that he wasn't afraid to be himself. He was eccentric and a true bohemian artist. That was truly one incredible guitarist who couldn't get much padma five separate night. All oh and that air of confidence translates musically to everything hosts it touches. And if this is the first time you've heard of jose feliciano and you're not sure you know him. 'P' is for Passion

"I are bringing tia today. The letter p from our hope series which is passion. So how do we find our passion. How do we do that. I kind of want to go back to one of our guests that we've had on our show and pre kumar who was from india and she brought up something really really cool and she said if you wanna have passion. Take money out of the equation and seriously. Is that not the truth there. What zinc about keith. About what you guys would do or what you could accomplish if money just was not it right like you took money out shane. What would you do. What what kind of things would you take. Part in i would travel. Yeah exactly and so. Would i write because that. I'm totally passionate about traveling. And so i just want you guys to to think about that. What kind of things would you do if if money was not a factor in it wasn't in the equation so Gary voinea check. The often is called gary v. 'cause a lot of people can't pronounce last night but he's an american belarussian entrepreneur and he said skills are cheap. Passion is priceless and that was really cool because yeah we can learn a skill and it's pretty easy to to get right but how hard is it to get passion and keep that passion and and let it continue to drive you and i think that's that's really it. What i wanted to talk about was the word passion. And i looked into it a little bit and from its if you look at it from greek and latin meaning. It's to suffer and i thought that's interesting to suffer means passion. But think about it when you had when you're developing your passion. Whatever it is you have in order to build that passion. It's gonna come with a cost. It's going to come with some suffering. You know you might. It might take you forever to find your passion. But i just thought that was so fascinating that the were the word in greek and latin means to suffer and i think we have to go through some suffering to get to our passion Let me give you an example. So we love to travel. We talk about that a lot. But i didn't growing up i didn't we didn't travel a whole lot I had to learn that. That was my passion. Sometimes i can't live out. My passion can't travel every weekend. Because i don't have enough money but so i have to suffer through some of that in order to see my passion through. I just thought that was so fascinating fascinating to to see it from that side or that perspective the other side is the passion that we typically think about which is an intense enthusiasm towards something or a compelling desire to do something that that's my passion of traveling is just that i love to do it I don't think i was born with it. I don't think anybody is born with any passion. You have to find it within you know. When i was growing up a little child i loved to play soccer. I had baseball cards at collected. Had garbage pail kids. And i when i was thinking about this. I remember sitting at the table with grammy and talking about dodger baseball. She would be reading the newspaper and she'd be. Hey you know about this player this player and she taught me to be passionate about dodger baseball and still lives within me today. i can't see as many dodger games as i want to live Especially right now. But i love taking my family to dodger stadium and it brings me back to my childhood when we sat in the stadium watching ron say and steve garvey dusty baker and all of those phenomenal players that she allowed me to see the passion in dodger baseball. That i have today Now you know it could be. A people could have a passion for animals or art or hobbies like dancing or singing or writing or yoga. anything. But i don't believe that we are born with that. I think we have to develop it. And we have to go through that suffering like they're talked about to develop that passion. Howard thurman was an american author philosopher and educator in civil rights leader and. He said this. Don't worry about what the world needs ask. What makes you come alive and do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive. And i think that cannot be more true than it is right now. They we see so many people that are not coming alive. They're just going through life. Just almost robotically and i think if we have something that we're passionate about anything hopefully you can hear it in our voice when we talk about travel and that passion that really is a passion of ours and if we if we don't focus too much on what the world needs and what we think the world needs and that we come alive. We're going to be much more passionate simply about living life. I love that you brought up grammy. 'cause she she is an awesome individual and Sad that i can't spend as much time with her anymore. Obviously because she's passed on but She i think you brought up that in my life. One of the things that grammy was super passive passionate about was swimming and she. I'll never forget. She was the one that taught me how to swim. Grammy was a fish and so she was super passionate about the water. I mean grammy was passionate about a lot of things right. And i think that's where some of our passion comes from is from the some of the things that she taught us and i think that's why shane and i really love to swim so much. 'cause grammy would. We would always swim whether that was in the ocean or in her pool that she had in her backyard. But we would all i. I swear every time. I saw drama we were. She was always swimsuit and we were swimming. Yep that's what. I remembered so i i. I think that's true is it's like find something that you really love and i think a lot of times. It's like going back to your childhood. What is that thing that you did as a child that you don't do now that you're passionate about and then what's stopping you from continuing those things. Shane and i love dodger baseball. We got that from grammy. We also love swimming. We got that from grammy when we were kids and so i think a lot of times. It's about you know what what was it when you were a child. And why aren't you doing that thing. Now what what is stopping you from having that passion. I think passion is like a fire. That's with inside you rate the just. Nobody can extinguish and that. You don't want to extinguish it. Can night that fire and let it burn within you. i also want to bring up something That i was thinking about too as i was thinking about passion I think it kind of goes back to Another episode that we recorded with benita condie. And she said this in an. I think it has to do with passionate as well as that when we put our blinders on is that thing. We're passionate about just right here. And we can't see it. We can't we just have to take these blinders off to to be able to see that thing where we're passionate about typically. It's right in front of you. So if you don't have a passion or can't find warner of wondering how do i get more passion. It might just be right in front of you. You just have to open that fear up a little bit maybe to find that passion that theme that you're super super passionate about yup. I think often too often. We get comfortable in our comfort zone and we think well. We don't need passion in order to live and i would strongly disagree. I think we that's why we're talking about passion that's why it's part of our hope series because we strongly believe that in order to live life and come alive. You have to have something you're passionate about. It doesn't have to be many things it can but if you're passionate about one thing then it's going to help you So have you ever thought about your passion being something a tool to motivate and inspire others. Think about that.

"That's the biggest advantage. I see of travel is that it is such an educational opportunity for children and it reinforces what they learn in the school systems hundred percent very well said and if i may add to this something that i think most parents are not really aware of our additional benefits that come out from traveling with your children so for example we all know or suspect that they are learning about the world as they travel through it which certainly was the case when we did it with our children. You know those cultural differences relieve impression and now so many things but there is also not only they exploring the world outside of themselves but unbeknownst to them. They're really learning about themselves. They're learning life skills. They're developing not just new perspectives but discovering personal interests. That that's this interesting. Byproduct of getting your kids out of their comfort zone and from what's familiar now. That's what travel affords Everybody not just children but particularly children who are going through. Whether it's adolescence are changes that are going on in their lives. All of this mixed together with this discovery about themselves through what they're seeing externally is i wasn't aware of When we embarked our trip and really realized. When i got back it's no surprise at my older son is now twenty three years old. Got his first job. Out of college at spacex he developed this love and appreciation for not just photography. that's a life skill. He learned while he was driving but an appreciation for our nautical engineering and space rocketry. That came out of visiting places like the kennedy space center and so forth so it could lead to be really anything but this gives children opportunity to discover themselves without the kind of influence of their peers and and you know kind of the day to day struggles that they have is young people. I hope the audience out there really takes this to heart. Maybe in some way practices on their own because to be aware of it will really enhance the experience. I think without being no intentional about it. 'cause it should just it just kind of happens and that's where the magic is and that's why go to career in trying to promote All the things that families can do together not just a theme park beach the case. It's some we talked about. But you know there's so many great ships one mention For example dude ranches very popular with the multi gen skipped gen circles if it's a chance to get outdoors and You can not just ride horses by go fly fishing and you'll quality time the cookout or you know by the by the can fire. You know making a sure or young burning marshmallows. Toasted marshmallows students attended arnhem but You know these are. There's so many things that i know. Parents grandparents alike will take the time to research. Discover not to put a plug for family travel association that i that i founded seven years ago but family travel dot org. I urge here audience. Check it out and maybe get some ideas and look at things that you never thought were even possible. Scuba diving with with children is is a possibility. I've gone on dive trips all around the world with my kids and other families ten years ago. I didn't think that was even remotely possible. I didn't realize that a ten year old could certify. Get their certification. I thought it would have been at least in the teens. If not a little older but anyway there's so much out there but as we kind of started with its finding that that kind of common ground that so important one planning something like this you know. What are some of the things that everyone in the family likes to do. And one last thing a common mistake that's also made when it comes to planning travel With families and certainly with multi jan groups is that they don't consider the activities before the destination in other words. People said okay. Where do you wanna go. And let's say for the sake of argument. Someone says i want to go to hawaii and allies. Great were really. What hawaii is is destination with beaches resorts things like diving as i mentioned some cultural experiences but if you pick the destination i you limit yourself to that destination offers instead. Start with all. I wanna go. Sailing are oh. I wanna beach vacation decide on the activity then. Your geography is much larger than you can choose from a greater variety not to mention expenses. Let's say everyone decides to go to hawaii but some people live in florida You know those are all factors so pick the activities. I the destination second. I hope you enjoy today's episode of the adventures with remy.

"And his daughter Jonah and all of those that are that have been tragically lost today. You are in a spirit. They're in our hearts and our prayers there in this building and I would like to ask everybody so take a moment and just hold them inside of you hold them inside of you and share our strength and support with their families. We never imagined a million years. We'd have to start the show like this. Never never never never never never so so we wanted to do something that could describe a tiny bit. How feel right now? She brought up boys to men to sing and it was so beautiful. And I think you know there wasn't a dry eye in the house. They had Kobe's Jersey had a spotlight on Kobe. Jerseys the whole night and the staple center yes. She had a very difficult task. And I think she nailed it definitely. There wasn't any perfect way to handle this. No obviously but I think that she did the best job that she yeah exactly. Especially you know what happened at Hours before the show even started. I'm sure they had some whole other plan that they had to scrap of course and once Alicia had this moment Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani performed and boy did I feel bad for that. Yeah that just they. He should've I'm sorry but like scrap. The performance have Lake Shelton and Gwen and I noticed. Sounds whoever came. Just don't have that performance which leads me to my the point that there's entirely in too many performances during the grammy awards. I know it's about the music and the award show. I WanNa see the awards. It's eleven forty five at night and we're announcing the the last word. I know that you WANNA like Lizotte. Opened the show to Eliza did a fantastic job. Honestly she said this one is for Kobe and she did an amazing job. Oh my God I was pumped up right. When I heard her singing? The thing is I don't think it's offensive to just not have as many performers. I you know like those people performing right and it just don't ask don't ask sat many people. Just ask a few people thing is the I do understand it because they they've always been pretty good. They WanNA touch all genres. They WANNA make sure everybody's represented but you know what it is. It is it it is quite long. I'm trying to think of who my favorites were. Oh well first of all I love. I mean we'll talk about it. Why why not just talk about it? I Johns brothers were We knew they were playing a bit of a new song they did. They started with this. New Song uncalled five. More minutes off their forthcoming album. which little video came out afterwards saying where they announced a new album coming that guy Do their first single from it and I mean I can't believe they're churning out this much music so fast I I knew it because they said that they had recorded so many songs that they have just been cranking out songs but rumor has it. You know beginning a new album in May. It's just amazing. Very excited about that I guess residency. Yeah we which by the way Jonas honest bothers you can wait one month because we are going to vegas today and they're doing it April like really. There's some rumors of that they will be doing this again. Multiple Times like won't speed this these days April could potentially be like December January something around around that time as well new years. Yeah because I think I'm going to have to wait it out. I really would love to biggest. I would really love to go in April but like we're going in the beginning of May. Hey I don't have that much money. I mean when asked like Joe my boyfriend asked me like I was complaining about I. I don't know what what I was complaining about. And he was like Jessica. Sit Down and calculate how much money you spend on the Joyce brothers in two thousand nineteen and get back to me and I was like I don't WanNa do. I WANNA do that. Iran not want to know the number. You can't can't justify spending money to go to Vegas spellers. Nobody can allow you to do that. I'm sorry I know you want to but the weekend after I can't maybe you know December January I can but it's just too soon you can't go to Vegas twice in two months. I feel like that's just too much is is I would go for the judge mothers and and nothing else like I would go fly. See them filed. Like there's like no. You're not allowed me nowhere saying you can't go leather. No I would leave on a Friday night shows Dr Saturday. I would come back on Sunday. You guys weren't even know I was gone. That's a crazy amount of effort. It is just to see that you've seen them a million times flying across but not brand but but you would fly six hours or whatever it is just to see them. She's seen it a million times. I can't just thanks. Thanks sorry I cannot justify this. I can't in my brain I I'm not GonNa do it. I want crazy. That's like a we need to see you help anyways. Besides the Jonas brothers there were nick had food and his teeth. Just let that slide. Yeah so I- Fran. I tweeted out you the Nick John Auto and I said okay me and then Nick Jonas tweeted about it. Yeah you know. Well I'M NOT GONNA lie. At first. I was seeing the pictures on twitter and I was like. Does he have a dead tooth like the way it was like a weird shadow and I was like Oh man like is that food is something else. I DIDN'T WANNA to speak on the matter until he did and he did. He tweeted that he likes his green so I can't believe nobody told him that he had food and his teeth. I the thing is is. He's not like a big mouth talker. I'm saying it was deepen you have. When he sings the big one easy I sing so saying reparation for like if he was just talking hanging out backstage probably nobody saw? How do you not do a teeth check when you're a performer? Before before before we get out there I do. Teeth checks all the time. I know you're good. You have to do with teeth. CIA people don't tell you nowadays and I think it's bullshit. I have food food and my teeth. Let me know. I really can't believe nobody. Nobody told him but it may be no recite it. I guess not. I guess. I'm sorry I'm just getting mad about the Times where I've had food my teeth. Then I look in the mirror and I realized I've been talking with my friends and my Lover Take your lover. I'm sorry are we calling hang your lover now. My walk took your loved ones. Save my Lover Times talking with my lover. He doesn't tell me I have. You might say I meant to say my loved ones. I said Lover Lover Too okay. You're going I know what I do. Love Him he is my lover. My loved one. Okay when they don't tell you if not moving on moving on a great John what was that I love their their outfits for their performance. I also also loved good good color cohesion. They were all like Kinda ingold vibes Trying to think of who else I mean there are so many many right like tired of the Creator. I thought was awesome. I don't personally get it But I can respected acted. His performance was fucking cool. Yeah Santa and I can't ask it but boy does that guy. Can you speak. I couldn't understand him at all which confused I mean because when you do listen to the song not lively and can understand them. It's hard to transit. Live right and that leads me to talk about the boy. Did I when the camera shake and everything I was thinking about being at a the mosh pits at a tower of the crater show and I got like anxiety in my bed under the covers. I was like anxious right. You don't WanNa the He won for best rap out and by the way his reaction to address as a bellhop. Yeah He dresses the bell hop on the carpet which we didn't mention but yeah he looked like I don't even need to see it. S Bahn Julio Recorded Montoya Del Rosa Ramirez. Oh that was straight off from the top. Your yeah I mean I I like I said I love the sweet life. Yeah Lotte Strauss his grand. Budapest hotel references so he when he and be announced that he won you. I think you could see him mouthing please him and which I thought was hilarious and then when he did when he was a I I was shocked him and his mom was so Frisco. You and you could talk like she just popped up on the stage like an Oh nice. He went up alone and when he got to the microphone needs to look to his left at his mom was just she just ran up there which is fair. She was excited. She was crying. Yeah There were so many great moments retire last night. One of them he talked about Being nominated for a rap album and he was like Kinda talking about how it it doesn't make sense because his album wasn't really wrap and he was saying that he thinks that they you know just because of the way he looks that they you just put them in the rap category when it could be pop and it could be other things which I understand because his album I wouldn't say really is a rap album and has some? I'm in it but I I. It's hard to describe type of music that it is honestly And then he was tweeting that he was excited. He got the rap music. which as I was watching I was laughing when I whenever somebody gets the rap music hilarious because you know they're getting it but they're not gonNA stop and then he tweeted out? Somebody was just so excited about the rapper. He was just like I'm so hyped on that which is amazing and then he had this tweet from somebody in two thousand eleven. Somebody tweeted at him. Don't don't be too excited. You won't get one because he was tweeting about how he was GonNa Grammy One day and he quote tweeted that and wrote. Oh I favored this nine years ago. Just for the moment to tell you I got one. Yes I'm pettiest fuck good day mark love it. I absolutely love love this. How Tyler the Creator have this tweet? Saved from two thousand eleven ready ready to just dunk on the sky. Mark like he could not wait. Wait for the day that he could be like good day mark. I love it. It loves the pettiness. Really really good to have that guy. Check your phone nine years later. He just responded to your tweet. Thank God that guidance. Delete that tweet because that would be unfortunate but it was amazing it was really really good. Amazing Arianna Guerande was fantastic. I thought she sounded amazing. "Here's thank you guys so much refreshing podcasts. So last night was the Grammy Awards Like we talked about in the the intro. Obviously it was very different. It had a more sad tone to it obviously They were playing tribute to Kobe. which was Handled Amazing Bio Shaquille. I WANNA start off by saying that like Lisa Keys. Just a marvelous human being human being human being so much poise. Grace meaning shot her. She is the she's the perfect person for that for that situation We less our with the with some some carpet stuff before we get into into the actual show like we said props everyone who worked this carpet. I feel like it was just incredibly hard. Incredibly difficult to to balance Having Fun but also respecting what just happened and and honoring Kobe So we had some some great looks we had some interesting looks Arianna Guerande. We start with her went full kind of Cinderella ballgown just absolutely enormous dress. The pictures of her like sitting in this dress real like made me laugh like how. How do you how do you get around to that thing? I have the idea but I loved his. She'll just an absolute clean. If you you have to have the confidence to be like I'm gonNA wear that dress. The grammys I'm GONNA sit on the red carpet. I'm with sit into this dress oppose. It was her night she was she was wearing this dress and then she had a second dress. Yeah I liked the outfit change more. I think go most really. I didn't like the office yet. I liked the first one better I thought the second one was still cute. Yeah it resembled the first one. Yeah kind of I saw people were applying comforter. Did it seemed very colourful. Looked like I WANNA snuggle rhyming. She'd been sweatpants under that thing. No one will. We don't know like she's as you know but I was thinking we were going to have like a lady Gaga met gala moment. Where like she would continue to just like take off layers of this this coun- as the evening went on and would end up in like some super cute like jumpsuit of some sort you now or whatever once you had the second change I was like? Oh yeah she's GonNa take going to be like pants and but she had a few more changes throughout than yeah. Yeah wearing a green dress that I saw I loved. I think I loved Oliver. Looks I one took my breath away. Though the first time I saw Then we have the Jonas Brothers of course yeah. All three of them were Rockin. I don't even know how to purdue. Greib what they they were wearing but sometimes I love their red carpet looks and sometimes I'm like Oh for the love of God what is that. What did you feel about not this one? I liked it. I liked it. There are like I thought they looked cool. They looked fashionable. Actually think Kevin look the best. Yes I feel like I really. I really liked Kevin Yell suit. Kevin and Danielle stole the show. I'm Danielle bus. Danielle looked so drop. Opt Ed Gorgeous. I can't those two. Were easily the best trash out of the couples. They looked unbelievable. Unbelievable I thought so. He looked really great. She was in just more like a fun super short. Sometimes hardy dress I because I love. I Love Sophie Turner. I get afraid to say what I feel about her fashioned opinions but often times. I find myself being like yeah. I liked Sophie. Turner stress but on the inside of my put. Ah did I really like Sophie. Turner's yes you know. I just feel like it's kind of looking the same lately. I don't know why the dress last night reminded me of another once. Don't you were recently. And it just wasn't my favorite not that I didn't look bad because she'll gray. It just wasn't ready. I feel like she went like grammy's a little more like punk rock vibes vibes like. She's just she was just at the SAG awards at the awards. She was in this Barbie pink like like long dress. She looked beautiful. But I feel like you know. Maybe she wanted to mix it up. Where some different sh? She did I loved her shoes. I thought they were really cool. Your cashews are really cool. And then Nick and Priyanka you know they look great is always but PRIYANKHA's dress was I thought I thought Priyanka Bianca looked beautiful. She'll glider for the the dress itself was a a lot. There's a lot going on with it. had a very deep v. in the front all the way past her belly. I think she had a lots of boob makeup on felt like contoured the shit out of her cleavage. Her boobs were yeah. I don't know how to describe they rape although the one picture that was just like a little. We'll up-close issues addressed like that. You need to let anytime. It's photographed and needs to be the absolute perfect angle. You know it's just very hard heart like it's hard to pull off a look like that. I think she did pull it off. There's not a lot of people who could pull off that kind of look I. I thought she really looked beautiful. Her hair makeup with stunning. And you know there goes the Jonas brothers and they're beautiful lives just having having tonight. I was very happy to see them on the grammy carpet. Obviously they perform later till we'll talk about that and I thought you know it. It was great. There wasn't too many like Major. I feel like carpet moments Taylor swift. We thought she was. There was rumors that she was going to Halloween. Aleka surprise performance. She didn't go. Yeah Look I will not outfit was conic. It was amazing. This hot pink cowboy. I little like Sim cowboy behind. It's amazing lizl looked. I love so I love. lasagna looks stunning it. Looked gorgeous beautiful white. She looked so beautiful and white. She loves wearing white right I think she's I think they said she. She was in for sake like she just looked. She looked stunning. It was a beautiful beautiful dress Trying to look Chrissy Teigen. I love that orange Ah Yes she looks great to. I've really liked really liked her dress. Do a leap. I think was one of my favorites. I loved loved loved hers. I was GONNA to put her I. I forgot she was going to be right at the top. Yeah Yeah I really liked. It was like a sleek off-white sat and almost like it was it was really cool. Classes like seemed like a little nineties like it was a very very quick look. I mean obviously was rocking her full Green Gucci like she does I feel like she is. I was just walking. You're watching your walk the carpet I was like how the how tall it like. I feel like she's just so Oh cute and little and I just want to squeeze her looking up right now. Oh she's my height exactly perfect too little that hire me. Yeah they WANNA give her a give her a big hug. People are now going to wonder what my height is. It says she's five three. I'm I'm like five three and career. I would say four my license yet. You always remember when you guys measured me and it turns out I've been lying. Yeah you always Brown yeah. Of course Oh my yeah. I thought she looked so cute. I'm trying to think of Gwen Stefani. Blake Shelton yeah I I think well all I liked gwen dress. I think everybody looked good. There wasn't many absolute standouts. I think billy porter gale L.. Super Cool School is always. I think we should get into. There are a ton of people saying duly. PA looked like I did see that Camille deemed. MD as well being like Ria you are do Alita and honestly I'm honored like thank you. Guys there was I was reading the dams and I was like just stopped because you're flattering. Flattering me way. Too Much Yeah I was honored because I really I was. I looked really nice of you to bring up on your own Nila. That was throne still coming in. So thank you now. I'll take that as a huge compliment. I feel like that's an honor All right let's get into the the actual show which was entirely too long are the grammys I am. I'm always excited for it. But once it hits like eleven fifteen. I'm like Oh my God. We haven't even done the major awards yet. What is going on? Why is this? Why is this happening? There's a lot lot that could be condensed or I don't I don't even know but It was it was fun to watch like we said Alicia keys. He's did a phenomenal job. maybe we put her her speech in here at the beginning because it wasn't really that not long. She summed it up really. Well here we are together on music's biggest night celebrating the artists. That do it best but to be honest with you off feeling crazy sadness right now because earlier today Los Angeles America and the whole wide wide world lost a hero and we're literally standing here heartbroken in the house house that Kobe Bryant builds now colby.

"Week. Betray really no I mean this week I was ready. So everybody's favorite time of the year happened this Wednesday grammy nominations. She's war announced bits on Melania and unseasoned. I'm being sarcastic so grammy. Nominations came came out on Wednesday. I just happened to be to see the livestream. This is my thing before I really get into my own personal opinion hip hop speaking everybody hip hop whether you're black white Brown Puerto Rican Asian and if you get their reference. You're really I do hip hop. Why do we continue to be upset? Upset about the grammys every single year. Monsieur I kinda thought. They did a good job last year. I thought they did a good job a yet. y'All find a reason every single year to be mad at the grammys and then come with the same excuse every the grammy's and no valid. We don't need to grammy validation and it every year. y'All get Matt on the Grammy Nominations. Come at you'll be glued to your phone screen and computer screens looking looking at those grammy nomination. So obviously you care what the grammy has to say to some extent so with that being said a lot of people seem to be upset the Megan the stallion and the baby. Why don't they nominated for best new artist? They standing nominations. She got none which I'm shocked talking. She didn't get any but my own personal opinion isn't about why she didn't get any nominations. My unpopular opinion tonight is not for the baby. It's not about the baby. He got his grammy nods. My is more geared toward Meghan. The stallion everybody hollering. She was snubbed for not being nominated in best new artist. I don't think Meghan stallion needed to be grammy nominated for best new artists looking at the category of Rosalia. Billy Irish little nausea six black boomers and Liz. Oh I don't think she needed. I don't think the years she had with great make make undoubtedly had a great year and she had a breakout year for her. But planes. Devil playing devil's advocate. If I'm on the Grammy Board I if I'm on the board I'm looking at it like compared to everybody else compared to Billy Irish did she have was here better than billy. Eyelashes looking at. It was better than Le's X.'s. Yes was it okay. Okay okay who for best new artist. Rosalia Rosalia Billy Irish black boom lack homeless Liz. Liz Naza Luna's aches and I think Maggie Rogers Maggie Rogers. She brought her two major. But that's neither here nor there but if I'm looking at it sitting at the Grammy Board I'm looking like yes. She had a great year. She was everywhere girl someone was even in the NBA Geico commercial. But you know what guy eight little song that was in like eight other commercials like follow the TV shows. And I think the Grammy Board kind of gauged. You that way now. Is that me saying that. She didn't deserve it not saying she didn't deserve it. But you don't always get what you deserve just because you deserve something talking doesn't mean it's going to be given to you. I think the Grammy Board. I think this is just me speculating. They looked at it and say yeah. She had a great year. She had a big year. Sure but compared to Louis who had who now who song now holds the record for longest weeks at number one year wasn't bigger than he is. Compared to Lizardo truth hurts the being number one song and she knocks is from being number one who really knocked exempt from being number one. Did she have a bigger year than these ours. Rosalita from my understanding is huge. Huge there are some people comparing her to Selena. So I'm just saying in that category Black Pumas from Austin I'm not gonNA say no Ma'am I just birds but she probably could make probably could have taken can either black or Maggie Rogers from what I never mentioned. Rogers she gets. It may be okay but I'm just saying looking Eh the field and looking at her year and then looking at the grammy boy grammy probably say she had a great year it just this wasn't groundbreaking. And we kind of already saw this with Cardi Cardi came in. We hadn't had a woman really another woman them into really look at it and rap since you know Nikki entering it and being dominant and now we have this fresh new face and she's breaking ground and and she's doing doing all these wonderful things and she's hot out here and they probably looked at me like where we just saw with. Cardi is not really that impactful. That's just that's just. That's just my speculation. y'All GonNa be mad I'll you won't mind debating it that's just my speculation and her team might right not be that chummy with the Grammy Board. Because the grammys aren't indicative of what the artists do but more so of what the label is willing to do. Or who the label people at the label known in in such and such so third. So you're never wrong. I want to give a shoutout to dear friend of the show Reno Reno. At least Alana's a manager who who will be our break live a second December second. Can't get those tickets it's GonNa be a great interview we we're all cool so I thought lining was wild and it'll be magic's Reno hit me to something that and know before you told. Let me this Cardi in Lisboa assigned to the same label Atlantic. So do I think that is coincidence. That lives Oh got the most nominated. Female rapper no the year after. Carter got the most nominations. Oh Oh the same reason why. Liz had the biggest stage next to Carter ACL. No the grammys are not culturally relevant. First stuff like fresh was saying you look Graham Say Wail Kosovo Soda Get nominated. Because they didn't win. That means that now disappointed should be. That's alive the baby is the most important rookie hip hop artist of this year. And may make my literally naked. Neko's everyone a grammy and J. Cold is one of the most important here bars for the last ten years. Look up to video. When when he lost best when he was nominated for best new artist lost and he loves Yoshi just see his reaction like his face say that all like he looked like he was there suited booting looked like he like? You know I got a good chance. Remember lemonade never won the album of the year re honest anti which is arguably her best In terms of like like conceptually album didn't win anything but like some Greta show on television city. Good Messy didn't win. Any grammys lost all grammies. The macklemore war in Ryan Lewis. WHO wherever they've been at After Graham tweeting basically but I mean Salon Jay Z.. And beyond say all made three albums all inspired I by your and other than what really nobody even had to get up on stage and say wow I wish you went out of the year for twenty four. Whatever she literally said what as we also have to do to win a year? What you have to do this? Her album eliminate inspired me to make this APP portable play into family. Got My arm just flailing Leyland. Just what are you need to do. Anything about color is about what is culturally relevant. Yeah Yeah.

So we can roll through some of the awards and some of the stuff that we saw the weird thing about the Grammys though is. People see the Grammy's. And this happens every year where somebody new wins like a best new arts, which wasn't the case last night because Duleep at one and she has big hits like she. She is. With the Grammys. It's such a small voting group of people that are kind of cool and history. It doesn't represent America. You explain that. He's on the voting member. So am I you have to be you have to have some sort of credential about for the Grammy's you, and I are are banned the raging idiot direct. It's not the radios night. We had a record that sold a certain amount. We were then given access to vote in the Grammys. So you have to be super musical. So what happens why some of these people went awards that are super cool people never heard of because the voters are super cool. It's not a representation of America. It's a representation of music snobs. I think most people don't know that and they shouldn't. But I mean, they don't want people to know that they wanted to seem like the reputation of America. It's not. So when someone wins, and you go, oh, how's this person, not bigger, what's because this person maybe doesn't appeal to all of America? Because there there've been people on it best new artist category that have one even last night. There was to be I never heard of right and not this shouldn't win. But who's voting are the real? Cool super knowledgeable people inside the industry people. It's why the avengers don't win best picture. Oh, the same thing with the Oscar that would be the academy. So yeah, it's like the academy in the I didn't even put together and you go. Well, why do all the movies? We never heard of win because people are inside the industry that went cool things to win. Yeah. It's it's a big award, but awards mean less and less, but that being said that's the deal with the Grammys. But what's cool about that? I think is that the Grammy people know like they listen to everything like they're supposed to I don't know. I voted, but like, even as you do you listen to a lot of stuff like that. I'm talking about the categories. Well, right mixing Eddy. I've only category song of the person. I knew correct. I get that. But these are knowledgeable inside people that really do. Listen to music, a certain way and can see stuff that most people don't really know. Maybe they're also don't have ears for like mass consumption for the public. That's true. And that's. Why it's also why the big movies don't win and why we get awards for. That we don't even know as long as people know that I think you watch it a bit different. You know, you wash last night Saint Vincent is playing and she's awesome. And I like Saint Vincent. But I'm kind of a music nerd and music snob and. I don't think a lot of people know her most people would be like why she on the show. We talked about Randy Carlyle, right? Most people were like, ooh. Who's this new artists only been around for forty years? And here's the thing about brandy. Carlisle is that? Yeah, Bernie calls again. I say this because I love Americana. I think Americana is what old country used to be. So it's your singer-songwriter. Like, it's kinda what Nashville is in a weird way. Like, it's acoustic guitar in your in your singer with a lot of heart. So I have a lot of friends that were on less than even people that I just know that aren't friends after she was on performed that. They're like on the biggest brandy car. I've known you for ten years. You've never once mentioned you like Brennan Carlisle. She is good. She's been awesome..

"You just met NPR music, Stephen Thompson. And also with us from NPR music is honest, as yet yoga's, honest is. Yeah, welcome. Hi. So happy to be here. Thank you for being here with us to talk big Grammy awards. Now, I wanna talk about the awards themselves first album of the year, Steven this was your favourite album of twenty eighteen now that does not happen often my favorite album winds album of the case. See mosque graves golden hour, a beautiful beautiful record and song of the year and record of the air. Both went to childish Gambino for this is America, honest, as he ended that's a prize you at all I think it may have surprised childish Gambino more than any one else. Do you take anything away from the fact that those were the three big winners? Well, I would say this was the first year that the Grammys had expanded those categories as well as best new artists to eight nominees which is a huge field and sort of becomes anyone's game at that point. Because you're like, well, you know, maybe there's going to be certain segment of voters who go for this and certain labels that go for that. Cates. The math a lot totally totally does. Yeah. So it felt more like the field was open this year that has a while. Right. Right. And this was also a really important year for the Grammys in part because of a controversy over some stuff that the CEO of the Recording Academy. Neil porno had said last year and honest as a you've reported on this and talked about it remind people what the what the broad outlines of that controversy were. So last year just to paint a little bit of a background. Lord was the only woman who is nominated for album of the year who was not allowed to give us a low performance. And there was a fair amount of IRA in the music industry. Like, why was she singled out and the producer of the show guy named Kim Erlich said we just can't squeeze any everybody in. And then a reporter variety magazine followed up and asked Neil port. Now, who's presidency of the academy. What that was all about and sort of general feelings about women in the industry in the in the me metoo era, and he said well women need to step up. And if they did I think they'd be welcome. And that more than anything else that infamous line set off a firestorm. And according to what I hear from you, the pop music industry statistics for women are still pretty depressing. Yeah. So in two thousand nineteen let's just make sure we know they're all talking about the twenty th century right of music, producers two percent or women and of engineers re percent are women. So they're pretty abysmal and those numbers by the by come from a group of researchers at USC who have also studied the Hollywood they come under street. And they've said you'll look this is much worse than Hollywood. Yeah. Both in terms of numbers in terms of just general attitude towards women in the field. Okay. And when Hollywood is your barometer for for good stuff happening. That's not great..

"Stephen you in later stephen you and i have been covering the grammy awards together for many years years though what stuck out for you tonight the my three were take away from the grammys grammys gonna grammy grammys are going to do with the grammys do namely disappoint are going to particularly in those major categories at the end album of the year song of the year and record of the year they are going to take five nominees the voters are going to look at those five nominees they're going to think what is the most bloodless possible choice and then they will make that choice and this year what that meant is that kendrick lamar who was nominated for seven grammys he was not up for song of the year but who is up for record of the year and album of the year was so kendrick lamar made dam which is unquestionably the album of the year and then the grammy voters gave us bruno mars and bruno mars is a game performer he is a fun pop star he's just very willing no he's he's he's performed at the grammys year after year after year but to say that twenty four karat magic this bruno mars record is the album of the year it's one thing to say like that's what i like that song was a big hit single i could see him may be getting a song award but album against damn yeah we think running to me it disprove legs such as spineless pook when you think about the last year and you know what's going on in the nation in politics sinn culturally it just doesn't resonate with where we are in the country right now gis agitated to see it not go to to damn i hate it to nazi gold ejei zee's album which was super personal and really his most mature work after a career full of grammy wins it it is phil really all point to me yeah outages any absolutely he is a safe bandung get me wrong as.
