Remembering Legendary Rolling Stones Drummer Charlie Watts

"Charlie Watts joined the Rolling Stones in the early days of the band 1963. It was a bit of a left turn. His early interest was in jazz, percussion and I love this quote from Charlie about joining the band, he said. It meant decades of quote, seeing mixed bum running around in front of me. Which in a way sums up what Charlie did. He provided the steady beat for the group, a group of rock stars who unlike him, embraced the rock star lifestyle and the limelight. Today. We really wanted to start by talking to someone who can help us parse out how important Charlie's worked with the Rolling Stones was Rob Bowman is a Grammy winner and professor of music at York University, as well as a music writer. He first met Charlie Watts in 2000, and two when he was interviewing him for a Rolling Stones book. And he kept in touch with Charlie ever since. Hi, Rob. Thanks for joining us. Good morning. How are you? I am. Well, I want to say I'm really sorry for your loss. Um, what was the first thing that came to your mind when you when you heard the news that Charlie Watts don't I guess. Shock so numb stand, you know, I've been worried for several years. Sooner or later. One of the Rolling Stones are just it was going to pass away or get sick and they were going to be able to play and, uh Couple weeks ago, Of course, Charlie announced Buddy, You've got an emergency operation and wouldn't play the tour and I thought it was so weird that they were going to do the tour without him, because that's not like them. Keith had always said they would never play without Charlie and figure it out. And, of course, when he passed yesterday, my meat so it is. That's why they decided to play the tour. They knew Charlie was dying, and Charlie. I told him to go ahead play. What do you remember? What do you remember first about meeting him? What was he like? He was an amazing, gentle, humble man with an incredible mind for jazz

"And speaking of iconic british acts what about new order or boys previous nominees. New order released a new single a rebel in september twenty twenty while six time nominees pet shop boys released the single cricket wife this year. I love that and you know the mentioned pet shop. Boys leads me to elton john and years and years. The two acts performed a show stopping cover pet shop boys. It's a sin at the brit awards earlier this year and released it as a single. Maybe considering elton is a five time winner could the cover snare a best pop to a group performance nomination or maybe even best dance electronic recording nomination that makes me want to go down a whole other rabbit hole of cover songs. That have been nominated for grammys. That's probably another episode. Then there's twenty time winner. Bruce springsteen dropped his letter to you album during the eligibility period. And of course he's bruce springsteen so he's pretty much automatically in the grammy conversation at any time and then there's eighteen time winner. Paul mccartney who released two albums that could find their way toward the nomination. His mccartney three studio album in december and its subsequent alternative remix album mccartney three imagined featuring an array of stars ranging from back and saint vincent to phoebe bridges and dominic feick so could the former get a nomination for best rock album with the latter finds its way to nomination in the best alternative music album category. Perhaps it'd be wild. If mccartney had an album in each of those categories oh yeah same time and then how what springsteen like what if it was springsteen verse mccartney. I rocket totally basel Okay so what about friend of the podcast kylie. No the grammy award winner released her disco album in november of last year. And it's very pop dance disco and it was warmly received debut in at number one on the official uk albums chart and it was also a finalist for top dance electronic album at the twenty twenty one billboard music awards minogue also had some interesting clam rations and covers in the past year. There was her studio twenty fifty four remix of disco albums real groove with grammy winner. Liba that was featured in leila's studio twenty fifty four livestream concert minogue was featured on a remix of years and years as starstruck and minogue even covered lady gaga mary. The night from the born this way album for the sets. Tenth anniversary reissue. There's also friend of the pod now. Rogers a three time winner. Who had a uk dance hit with s g. Lewis called one more rogers also credited alongside twelve time winner. John legend and winner burner boy on the song coming to america from the movie of the same name. The track was produced by rogers and the current reigning grammy award winner for producer of the year. And oh yeah friend of the pod. What maybe a record for friend of the pod on the pod. Lastly at least for this list. What about billy idol. Joan jett and stevie next under the pod stevie nicks has three time nominee idle and previous nominee. Jet were both featured on miley cyrus. Plastic carts album which came out last. November idol was featured on the album's night crawling jet on the track bad karma and then of course knicks. Who was a two time winner was featured on the album by way of a remix of midnight sky that was dubbed edge of midnight which mashed up nixes edge of seventeen and cyrus is midnight sky produced by what it's unclear how next could get a nomination from this particular remix album but you never know knicks herself release her own new song during the eligibility period. That called. show them the way. So it's possible contender as well so delicious. A few and that's alive but just a few of the possible veterans and legends. Who might possibly score some grammy love at the upcoming awards Who else do you think might snag nomination us. We remain to be seen. We have seen it remains to be seen and while the data the grammy nominations announcement has yet to be revealed. They will likely be in early. December as the final round of voting begins december. Six the sixty. Four th annual. Grammy awards will take place on january thirty first twenty twenty two all right now. It's time for the charts out of the week this week. In nineteen eighty two survivors eye of the tiger hit number one on the billboard. Hot one hundred. The track climbed four to one on the chart data july twenty fourth nineteen eighty two and spent six weeks all consecutive atop the list. I have a tiger was the theme song to the hit film rocky. Three and the track went on to garner and academy award nomination for best original song katie. Did you know it was nominated alongside. How do you keep the music playing from the film. Best friends if we were in love from yes giorgio it might be you from the film tootsie and up where we belong from an officer and a gentleman so katy which song won the oscar that year for best original song katie time. I only know one of those songs. "Show that 15 time Grammy winner Alicia Keys Valentine's weekend. Valentine's weekend. Welcome back to the Valentine's addition to bumper to bumper radio. Gosh, Carrie, I wish I would have been paying attention A little earlier, too good. Talked about giving your Carson love love backer are good, too close to some of the parts of the car, but just give it some love may be a nice little little massage of the car, little wax. You can massage that car and maybe if you're maybe it would depend on what your car is. Here. She would treat you very nicely and you know a clean car. Carrie is a happy car. It's right. I clean my car. Sometimes when it rains, I learned that from a tow truck driver. One time he'd be out there. Washington touch I don't like. Are you crazy? He's like, No, Everything's clean now like it's you know, if you have a dirty car that gets rained on. What do you have A dirty cars? No, you stop it dirty. Yeah, It's just rain down, washing off and it be great looking tow truck so Times that sometimes when we watch the car is Winston rain or, of course, when you want it to rain, just wash the car, and that will happen. So maybe we'll have some people come up with some Valentine's gift ideas. If you want to gift your Valentine's something for the car, I mean a Ferrari. Okay about that I would take a shiny red Ferrari. I prefer the Portia personally but 602 to 775827. That's how you call us and I'll answer your question. If I Can. If I can't. I'll have Carrie make something up. But not and well, Yeah, we're gonna go in this order is going to be J. Rob, Eileen Scott and Justin are tie. So J and Phoenix has got a 1995 zoo Zoo truck, J. How can we help you today? Blue. Jay. Hi there. Hi. What's going on? How can we help you today? I'm running into some rather interesting problems with my truck. I've got like a sudden 95 of Suzu. Uh, but Oddly enough, these trucks, almost all of them are carbonated. I have a incredibly unique one that's fuel injected from factory. And tonight I cannot find parts for the injection system. Nobody seems to have diagrams to this engine. Okay, Now you say this. I don't know if this is a typo. Is this a 1995? It is okay, so I know there was no car braiders, uh, on anything for around 95 that I recall in Toyota's was one of the latest ones Now is that a zoo zoo truck? Is that the one that kind of looks like a Chevy s 10? Yeah. No, This is the year previous the 96. They went to this is one break. The 95 was still the original pick up and yeah, all of those were carbonated, okay? So that have that 2.6 leader with the Makoni carb radar, But yours is fuel injected. You said, right. Ah, minus fuel injected, But I've got the 2.3. Which is the small block, Okay? Okay. Okay. Now kind of guy. I think we kind of got figure out what you got. So what's that? What kind of symptom or what? Your problem is, you're having that I could help you try and find some parts or what are you trying to cure? I've got a random skip. I'm missing one of the cylinders and we're fairly certain It's an injector problem. I've gone over with mechanic already. Uh, You know a lot of extra fuel coming through the exhaust system. Uh, the spark plugs air Good. I know that there's some fuel system issues going on just because of some other work that we've had done in the past. But without being able to find these diagrams for the engine, we're not completely sure. How the terror this, uh, intake manifold apart and get the injectors out, and we don't have a part number for those injectors. Well, I The parts were there to be had for that car. There should not be a problem. 95 years Easy Try, you know we use the source notes are edition might be a little bit different, but it's called all that and you can go toe all data that's an information access. It's got parts labor, part numbers, wiring diagrams, and that's what many shops use. We use that we use. Mitchell we, his Children. We have all kinds of different subscriptions J. But you can also get daily passes or buy a weekly past. You might even bio Tobia annual pass for a small price for one car, and I promise you you can find everything you need to know about. Your 95. Jews is far as repair specifications and such. That's the thing. Actually, we haven't been able to find that we have a description that Children's through. Ah, Our local library and we are unable to find any diagrams of that engine that I've got the fuel injection system. Although the mechanics that we go to all of the parts shops that we go to nobody can even find the existence of this engine. And this is a okay. So what do you know what the production data is in the late 95. Or maybe you could be looking at a catalog for 96. No march of 95 is the production date on it. Okay, so it's early then. Well, it's certainly early, but it's an import from Japan. It's not a Japanese vet vehicle. No, it is not not a right hand drive. Okay? It is Americanized. It is left hand drive. It's got all of the American conditions equipment, but it is that injected system that we just cannot find anything for. All right. So here's what I want you to do. You're gonna have to probably go to the dealer and you take the deal or the vin number. If this car was designed and built and sold to be operated in the United States, the dealer will have that information in what might be helpful they could go. No, it's not microfiche anymore, but they could probably print out for you. A diagram of an exploded view of some of these items and stuff so you can figure out how to get them put together. Now, as far as the fuel injectors in such go, you know you can do a test on those home tests them see if they're consistent. There's a place called Rods, carb rater over 27th Avenue and make down if you want to take those fuel injectors out whether than replacing them and look for a part number for them. You can take them two rods, and they have AH, machine of fuel injection machine. They'll put them on the bench. They'll clean them. But before they do any of that, they Elektronik we test them. They load them electrically to really put them. Under test they chest, the flow patterns. How many cc's of fluid they spray and a certain period of time. And they also, you know, then watch the pattern, which is most important, Then they can clean them and put them back together, you know, and put it back in the car and tell you in part of that part of that is a diagnostic process. You don't necessarily know if there's a problem with the fuel injector. You suspect you have a fueling problem. So two things happen when you do that, and we do this fairly often in our shop is we think we have a problem, But I don't want to just go throw the fuel injector in the car. I don't like to be replacing parts until I can prove that they are bad. So by doing this with by doing that, they convinced test them and say, Hey, man, they're actually good. We were able to clean up the spray patterns and this one was just going off to the side. Instead of make instead of making a nice, fine mist, And so that might be one of your first steps. Another thing I'd be looking at on that car's probably if you're over fueling if it has again, I don't know. The fuel system is a map center manifold Air absolute pressure center so we could know what's happening inside the engine back in there in J last,.

"Let's talk about the actual grammy winners Starting with Billy Bush. Yeah who swept all all of the big four categories which is best new artist Song of the year record of the year and album of the year. And it's not for nothing but she's she's the first female artist to ever sweep those four categories. The last time anyone ever did it with Christopher Cross x eighty one for you stat nerds is out there. also also could no guaranteed track record for long-term. It was a strange evening because going into the awards. A really really looked like lizards had the potential to have a huge sweep thing. She led the nominations for the entire year. Little Nasdaq's and Billy I. I wish weren't that far behind her. But in the end Liz only got a couple of the awards and then the ceremony went on and on and on for hours hours and then in the last few minutes billy I took off for the top SPA. Yeah it it did at as you said. Liz Won the first award. In in the telecast for best pop solo performance of for Truth Hearts beating among others billy Bush and earlier in the day Luisa won best traditional rb performance performance and best urban contemporary album. So they gave out a nine awards over. The course of the telecast four went to one went to lose oh the others went to to Dj Callard featuring nipsy Russell and John Legend won for best rap. Sung performance Dan Shea Won. Best Country Duo group performance. A little Nasdaq's exp featuring billy ray Cyrus won. Best Pop duo group performance and tyler. The Creator won best rap album for eager. Yeah and the funny thing thing is that tyler seemed really ambivalent about winning for best rap album to the seemed to indicate that he thought it would be much more comfortable in Dan. Hi Pop music category and that kind of caused back to this real struggle. The Grammy's has had with black music and traditionally Sean you black forms and black artists that there's been a lot of criticism that they subvert those artists into the side categories. Gorey's that are have a big. You know a big box around them saying that you're black then you belong here and that sort of this tonight. What kind of calls back to that in a really uncomfortable way you know if you think a few years ago about beyond say and Adele and you think about Kendrick Hendrick and you think about all these artists who have not quite gotten the shine that people might have expected? It may feel maybe not tyler's album women in particular but It's her raises a lot of those same questions and this is exactly the kind of stuff that the grammys are struggling with. When it comes to inclusivity and diversity this is a fine time for us to talk about performances and moments that we liked and didn't like what were some of your highlights? I have to say there were some really really on point performances tonight lizotte. Starting out was incredible degree. She brought everything tonight. I liked billy. We can talk about that. Maybe that wasn't such a thing. I thought that Rosalia did a great job of introducing who so she is and what she's all about this evening.

Rosanne cash to talk about her new album, the conversation quickly turned to the sources of her creativity. And the themes of mortality and love and Dafa female. This is her first record in nearly five years and the four time Grammy winner calls it her most personal album to date, the title track was just named one of the top five songs of two thousand eighteen by the New York Times as the Boston Globe said she is both speaking out and looking inward, and you said there's nothing outside of yourself. They're not in this record. No last three albums. I did were teamed albums black Cadillac about loss. And then the list which was a covers record Bill listing of songs by data giving me when I was a kid and then the river and the thread the last one which was really geography both emotional ancestral and musical of the south, and I really didn't wanna do themed record again, I felt this urgency to get back to personal songwriting urgent. See is how I experienced the record. I'm in its lush, it's gorgeous. But there is a sense that there are things that you have to say you say them with a kind of eloquence that allows every listener to sort of project themselves into it for actually blushing. Thank you. Why do you think it took fourteen albums to produce the most personal one so far? I just don't give a damn anymore. Eight. I mean, we were talking about this before about we're two months apart in age and at this point in our lives, you just not don't flinch more to give. That's you don't have anymore. That's exactly right. And and yet we still have a lot to say and less time to say it. So there's a feeling of urgency that everything I want to do in my life lyrically musically. Personally, I have to do it. Now how much of it is about taking stock. A lot. I mean, you, and I we were talking about both gratitude and freedom before we came out here. What do you want the most I wanna feel grateful, and I wanna feel free and taking stock of regrets? So that you can finally let them go taking stock of how much rage you still have left in your body. So put it in a song, and the preciousness of what I have, you know, a long term relationship children work. I love five kids five kits gave birth to four got one for free. That was a lot of box cop. Yeah. Do you? Remember the first song you ever? I do. But you're not going to ask me to tell you anything about it. I like not even like two lines. Well, I will tell you because I had to do this show called first and worst. It was a fundraiser from the music health alliance which is a great cause. Which is the only reason I did this you had to play the first song you ever wrote. And the worst song you ever wrote. They happened to be the same song for me. And it was called love his lost. Again, isn't that deep? So tell me about the only thing worth fighting for. T-bone Burnett, and I have been friends for a long time is a great producer music, supervisor beautiful soul was music supervisor for true detective, so he called me up. And he said, well, you write some lyrics that are kind of about destruction. And maybe there's a bird in it. And some you know, just kinda went on and on I go. Yeah. That's my wheelhouse. I'll do that. And so I wrote these lyrics and sent them to him, and he and lira Lynn wrote the music and it ended up opening the second season of true detective, and even though it was a commissioned work in a way, it was still like really me. It was still where I was in my life. So even that one and a second song that he asked me to write lyrics for called, my least favorite life. They were still me. It was it was all there. It's all you can do. Right now. It's all I can do right now. It's right. What else am I going to do get it from television? You You know, know? why don't think? So. Can we hear it? Yes. It like malaria harden could be memorial heart. Good people. But I think you're going to want an actual God who's up one of the guys said like one of my dearest friends was Michael Jackson. I think it was the unicorn said that or someone said that. Yeah. So it was like who's a musician who maybe in the background of things, you know, like, maybe part of a group, and he's the one who's name you forgot like is there someone who was in for devoe or something. So but who was in new edition, but it's not Bobby Brown. You know, right. It's going to be that level of person. But anyway, I think it's sort of interesting it had huge ratings as you put rating it. What did I what did nine point two million viewers on a huge two point nine rating on the demo? Nice start. And it crushed everything else on the networks last night. And I think it's only get bigger because the show is so strange, and it's like singing competitions those I already. Yeah. And it's the first singing competition in a while. That's actually novel that has like a gimmick in not just like, oh, here's Meghan Trainor. Like tapping a button, you got us back like a pure gimmick. 'cause the four which to confusing. I think I mean, I don't even know if it's still on but to four was too confusing the voices, obviously iconic like definitely the most now at this point probably more successful than American idol because around the wolf it's way more popular than than there. Was that show member the wall that showed the wall that was a flop a flaw? Gimmick. Was that gimmick was too weird? The gimmick was like, not fun rights. You need something that is in people in masks Eugene's people South Korea, like didn't they know it's been on there for like five seasons or whatever Jessie j probably like one every season as far as I'm concerned. I don't know if Jesse j ends up like Jesse James. Like reality show world tour around like shows up on massing, or I'll be so proud of her wishes in meet whatever new sheet is her new Nisha is being a ringer on reality singing competitions. What a great like profession is kind of reminds me and I loved doing this. I think I will enjoy watching this show of when member of the New York Times had that that little documentary about the making of the song the middle, and they had the demo and they had all the clips of the different women singing. We all were like one hundred being who the voices were. It was like one hundred women saying that demo and then finally they got married. Moore's and didn't you have a cold or something that part wasn't? She like I had a cold when I sent out my demo and then get it. But they were like we love that. Like guess who it was like Milo Carly? Carly razi? It was crazy that they let that I mean, it was just so fun to listen to. It is. But the problem is that that had I knew in my mind, the group of women who would send out demos for that. And this show is so insane that it's like, you don't even know the pool of what if you're pulling from it could be anyone anyone could be made could be me could be them. Surprise. I'm on the math showman. Rosen Lindsay is the unicorn, okay, we need to move on the the voice changer. Gimmick. I gotta say, I just love voice. And so the moment I was like how are they going to QNA's? And then they like pulled this thing to their neck, and I was like, oh, my voice grain jars. So scream. Okay. Let's move onto the next one. Bobby? Hi, Lindsay longtime longtime actually been calling in a long time for me thumb, you know, trying to get a little bit of a break..
