It's like a side note to to what i'm doing but I know who a lot of the members of the recording academy are and they're like their peers and to ha- so to have that sort of like Recognition from people. That i really admire was was nice. It was really nice.
Jon Levy on Cultivating Influence to Build Friendships
"You're around twenty eight twenty nine and you decide to start this thing that you call the influencers dinner right but it hits an interesting twist. Can you kind of tell our listeners about the the roles of this dinner. It's kind of little a little bit different. So i wanted to figure out how to connect with these highly influential people and i realized i needed to do something completely out of the ordinary or they would never notice me so invite twelve people at a time. But they're not allowed to talk about what they do or even give their last name. They cook dinner together. And then when we sit down to eat we play a ridiculous game. We try to guess what people do professionally. And then we find out we're sitting with about laureates. Olympians editors achieve celebrities. Grammy award winning musicians. I hosted over two thousand people ranging from like the world's foremost expert on infectious diseases to members of royalty and even the voice of the dog from who let the dogs out who won a grammy for the fell. Like just ridiculous people right and it's grown into by the largest community of its type in the world of thousand members. Two hundred twenty seven dinners ten cities in three countries. Yeah it's kind of silly also not silly. It sounds awesome and this idea. You know what it's turned into. It seems like it's a little bit different than what it really starts. Your original goal wasn't necessarily like changed the world. It will bring together awesome. People is what you're saying. Yeah book yeah it's I figured that you know. I didn't wanna be networker when you look at the the research networking people absolutely hate it. I mean it's just miserable. It makes us feel dirty. But i realized doesn't make us feel dirty is making friends and being a part of a community so i figured if i could get these people not just to connect with me but with each other. Their lives would improve and so admired in the process so that was my focus. It's not just about knowing somebody but for them to know that. I know and as many of them as possible. Everybody's better off.

Streaming music services fighting for your ears
"Has never been more important. You see in the new world of streaming If an artist can create that perfect single, their song will be streamed billions and billions of times, making them anywhere from 2 to $3. Welcome back to for my Mariana Trail that was comedian Trevor Noah, making a music streaming joke while hosting last month's Grammy Awards ceremony. This hour. We've been talking about artist compensation in the age of music streaming and in the age of the pandemic, I'm talking with Cody Fitzgerald and Josephine Shetty, both co founders of the Union of musicians and Allied Workers. And both musicians themselves. Josh can the CEO at Band Camp and not still going? Oh Sky associate editor here at KQED for KQED Arts So Trevor Noah joke on a stage like the Grammy shows that there's pop culture level awareness enough to make a joke that you know the audience will get nasty. Do you think this could be an inflection point? Culturally, where organizing efforts can maybe move the needle on artist? Compensation? Is this movement that will gain momentum? You think Radio. I think for so long music and art in general, such an individualistic pursue and then also not to mention artist kind of a lot of the time feel pressure to project this image of financial success, which makes it really hard to transparently talk about the economic realities of music. So I think just the fact that artists are building collective power and just talking about how much they make out in the open and identifying as workers is actually a big cultural shift, But I think we'll make this Conversation. Keep progressing. And Eric
Grammy Award ratings drop 51 percent to record low
"The Grammys have hit a sour note at least with viewers truth be told people probably would have liked the pandemic era version of the Grammys if they have Bob watch but as the Nielsen ratings show feud did just nine point two million viewers tuned in that is a drop of more than half of last year's audience what's more the numbers from Sunday include both TV viewers and those watching on streaming services the show avoided the zoom like awkwardness of other pandemic era award shows and it managed to give music fans star for live performances something to look at and still the numbers were low and that may be a trend not a blip ratings for the golden globes dropped sixty three percent last month last year's enemies also dipped to record lows if next month's Oscars follow that trend TV executives might start wondering if such shows can be counted on anymore draw big audiences I'm a squirrel's Gabriel

The Weeknd Is Boycotting the Grammys
"Music's biggest stars, is boycotting this weekend's Grammy Awards. He's the artist behind one of the most listen to tunes ever spending 52 weeks in the top 10 of the billboard hot 100 lists. But the weekend is now saying Science Nora to Music's biggest night the best selling singer, announcing he intends to boycott all future Grammy ceremonies and will no longer permit his music to be considered for upcoming awards. This just months after the Grammys overlooked the Canadian artist completely shutting him out of all nominations following this snub the Grammy Award winning artist harshly criticizing the recording academy, calling them corrupt writing. You owe me my fans and the industry transparency. And the Grammy goes to critics have blessed the show before accusing the awards of being biased and out of touch. One of the things that has been very astonishing about all this is that three out of the last four Grammys have been racked by one scandal or another for the weekend, not to be nominated, either points to corruption or Severe dysfunction. Last year, former Recording Academy CEO Debra Dugan, ousted for alleged bullying filed a bombshell discrimination complaint against the recording academy, alleging the board manipulates the nominations process. I'm saying that the system should be transparent and that there are there are incidents of conflict of interest. That taints the results. Dugan also highlighting the longstanding struggle with gender inequality and lack of diversity when it comes to the most prestigious awards like album of the year. Saying those awards rarely go toe R and B stars like Beyonce or Kanye West. But instead, the winners tend to be in the rock, country and pop genres. But the weekends most recent statement taking it one step further, saying because of secret committees, I will no longer allow my label to submit my music to the Grammys. Something's wrong with that process. If an artist like the weekend can't even get nominated. It's something that needs to be fixed. The Super Bowl headliner is just the latest big name star to tune out the Grammys. Others include Drink, Justin Bieber and Nicki Minaj. Now. In response to the weekend statement, Harvey Mason Jr. Interim president and CEO of the Recording Academy, told The New York Times We are all disappointed when anyone is upset. We are constantly evolving. And this year as in past years, we're going to take a hard look at how to improve our awards process, including the nomination review Committee. It's ABC is Amy Robach reporting
Who Will Be Performing at the Grammys 2021?
"Be appearing? Do we know Yeah. One or two names that will try to fill the massive void that it will be left by the weekend. Not being there. People like Taylor Swift. People like Billy, I'll ish, uh, do a leap a post Malone. Coldplay's Chris Martin are all slated to perform. There was that thing going on on Twitter this week regarding Bruno Mars, where he said on Twitter that he's got a new band and would love to appear on the Grammy Awards, and it went back and forth with the Grammy people. Oh, did you change your number? We've been trying to get ahold of you. Oh, yes, I'd be happy to appear so anyway. Bruno Mars. Ondo. His new band called Silk Sonic will be among the performers Harry Styles is from the one direction is going to He's going to start the show is going to be the lead performer on it. Maren Morris. Meghan, the stallion. John Mayer. Miranda Lambert s O. I'm the It's one of the best nights of music. I mean, a lot of people go. I don't even know these cigarettes. I don't There's you know you want upside and like my dad did when the Beatles came out. That's not me. It was like, I don't know what that is. Actually a lot of it. Even you know, the new performers give it a chance that a lot of it is really great music. So it's going to be Sunday night's gonna be seven o'clock. Trevor Noah. Is hosting the show this year, so I think it's going to be funny. They're gonna be doing it mostly virtually at different locations around the world, like they did the Golden Globes a couple of weeks ago, and Beyonce is the artist to beat. She's got nine nominations, and if she winds up winning, let's see. She's got 24 now, so all she has to do is win eight more, and she will tie Sir George Sheltie, formerly of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, He is the record Grammy holder with 31. Right now. So, Beyonce, you know, she wins more than that. She could beat Sir George Solti. But you know Chicago in holding onto that distinction for quite some time. Now, that is a

"I'm saying? Grammy award winning record breaking. Does that put a pressure on you? Definitely. And now only with my albums with My singles. I don't always expect a black yellow but I always expect a good song. So like I'm always trying to do better than my last songs all the time, you know, put on music in a long time. I just don't know It just was being so hard on myself like on everything that I was doing like, and I'm I'm liking my pickle. I'm fixing it because I'm hard on myself on everything that just like I always wanted to songs that is for the girls. And the boys like this song might just be too girly toe work You like this song might be too to like men like or sometimes I just don't like my voice and my accident. That's crazy, because what we love from Cardi Is what you kind of like, Oh, I got to go Do it again. And I heard you say that before where it's like you get in there and you kind of over enunciate you do you keep doing vocals? You know what I'm saying? And also, and I know your team tell you as well. We love your voice. We love Cardy. But if you're in the studio, I know that you're probably looking for perfection. And you know when you actually got that, and I think that's what you present to us as well, sometimes because, you know, like that's that I feel like my dish is very broken. You know, I come from a home where my As people and in this sometimes I think I pronounce something right like is that Cannery knows you're right. But you're just experiencing hot, right? Just everything like it has to be perfect. Like when it comes to music to me like it has perfect when I want like, and I talk, and I say something wrong. I don't give a lot of my music. It gotta be picked up. I love that about you, too, though. Right now, How far are you into the album? Do you have the dates or you just kind of just working it through. I'm just working it through and I feel that when I finished the album I also got think when I want to drop the album World Disclose, we got more Riccardi be. I'll stick around your radios Big Boi's neighborhood. But I'm always running for the Lord. "So listen. Th-th before i leave you guys. I want to get this off my chest. I i don't know if you guys ever have these repetitive dream cycles. Or maybe it's just my ass. And maybe i just need to go back to therapy. But i've always had not always like three years ago. This started happening maybe two years ago. I'm sorry almost three years ago. Actually you know what. I'm right three years ago so i started having this dream pattern where it's like. It's the same plot line. I guess to the movie but different scenes or location or actors. Does that make sense. But it's the same fucking dream every night. So it really triggered from me being or what i thought was in love with someone from my past and not having that feeling return and just the whole drama of it all but really not loving myself at the time so now that i look back on it you know what i mean. But anyways that's a whole different episode. And i kept having these repetitive dreams cycles of this person in a particular situation and that lasted for so many months and months and months and months and months and it just got annoying and in the beginning it really hurt because i was trying to process no longer being roommates with this person and kind of really fucking it all up kind of ruin the entire situation now my fault so i'm gonna say the words of windy not my fault..

"The pathology of the grammys. That is the always snob. Such great artists. Who are revered or they might not even or they'll give you all those nominations per jazy this with the four four four case. Look what happened most nominated artists of that night and went home with nothing. How does this happen. Amazing album by the word for four. I still listen to it. I'm about to write my old four four four five. It's not real one. Three one three one three four. This man is adding digits. wanna know. i'm gonna tell you my two top things. You go ahead though i you your top two things or three things that your biggest issue with the grammys. The biggest your biggest issue year you you were on the committee what you would fix. I'd start off with Making sure that different artists are being nominated artist. Because there's listen when you think about the scope of music and you think about albums there's so many that are released in a year and we are only privy to what's given to us on radio so we have to do our own investigation on spotify on this and that and the other and then you do those do those. You do their research. And you find so much more music much are catering nada. You're not has been around for a while now. He's just getting the best new artist nomination ten years. He's been out for a minute. Listen audience. that's my they. Don't get it right and so let's start there. Let's be more exclusive but also no. Let's not give taylor swift an album of the year. For what and then not. let's get. Let's stop playing it safe. Lets you know what i'm saying. Let's get grimy. Music is all encompassing. And i would start there. I have a big issue with artists. That i love that. I feel like our super worthy. That don't win. Best new artist. And as i mentioned on the grammy episode jill scott perfect example beautiful example after that but yes beautiful lost to diana krall. That year was mind blown really. We're doing this. Who which donahue you know what i'm saying. I'm not saying that saying no industries are but it's like fucking bad. It's joe. I mean i think about what was going to say because i i'm gonna say next not. Oh my gosh cute. Cute got rougher the renaissance. Saturday whitney whitney houston. That won. Best new artist that year. So she didn't lose to some in. You know what i'm saying but should have one the one that day one best. I think i think it was the album that she won. that year. Should be winning out okay but when you be here for the best borders well hard my bad. Maybe all the way around. I don't remember to a lot of our legends aren't even nominated sometimes aren't even recognized. So we talk about madonna ray of light. It's so fifteen years just to get up there. That's what i. I so artists like my favorite songs from albums to two before that three before that you were credible and that that's the same for a lot of artists in different genres. I think the bow hip hop think about the fact that darn hill was the first hip hop artists ever to win on with the year. But then i think about other great bodies of work. Hipaa deserved that sue that. Why haven't they been nominated for kendrick. I think we'll kendrick brings to the forefront grammy's respectable I it's a that's another thing too. So that was the year of allegedly macklemore. Come on get out of here. Map will who so. It's about playing it safe. I feel very americana for them. One hundred percent. It safe for them. They know it Short it's inconsistent so they're ruling seems to be inconsistent and i think what that What what that speaks to is one of my main issues with the grammys. Which paola which is similar to radio. Your songs on what we just learned with the weekend was that the grammys was pretty much like you either. Perform with us. Are you perform with the super bowl. But you're not doing both and if you don't perform with us you're not getting and he didn't get nominated once or or no. He didn't get once right now. May not once we can we not weekend at least once now than they can't perform which they said. Oh yeah so well listen. I touched about that a little bit. Early harry here's the thing. Stop looking for validation. I feel like and you stop looking for the white man. You can stop looking for validation just in general if your numbers are this this is what you project from me i think especially now cova two thousand twenty i would rather have ten million people praising my body worked word of mouth always listening to it than one little statue but i get what that statute means for for them. I i respect that because that's what the goal is. It's like when you go to the nfl. You want the super bowl ring when you play at the nba championships. Want whatever the hell they give you they give you the championship right Whatever it's all the same you want to be you know for me. I think it's not best best best that i think it's this of the year. I don't like that word best. I could think about five other best before. I can i can. I can think about plenty of the best before i think about the weekend. The weekend isn't even in my like listening world regime at all. Sorry the weekend you got great music but the design was like the biggest island this year. Not just his own loving the goes back to your statement about having fugger nation. You got the big album this year. No what. I'm saying that validation validation and take that and you're still eating better than most of us shut the fuck up. You really don't like weekend. It's about a week. And i just feel like it has nothing to do with the weekend. He just happened to be. But then i see all this back of support for it. Now sue and i get it. But we've been doing this with the grammy's for years but where was that same energy for other artists walking. Think better than the weekend. I think there was no match even maybe not as widespread but there was energy for artists. There's always a campaign for chance at the grammys. Assert get it. I get it and it's always a good time to speak of something. Always ignites but again awards shows are. What's wrong with life popularity contest. I the so really. I think that we've also learned a little bit more this year. Two null that Again someone has.

We are going to revisit the nine hundred ninety nine grammy award shows. And why are we the grammy's well with all this talk about the weekend and him pissing and moaning because he didn't get the acknowledgement or the recognition from the white man that he feels. He deserves a wanted to revisit a time when the grammy's even though they were still dogging artists back then but music was better and so one of my favorite award shows of. The grammys was the nineteen thousand nine. This is the year of the incomparable. Lord-hill madonna alanis morissette and the puerto rican invasion the latino express pulling in with his main conductor ricky martin. It was an incredible award show but also on today's episode. We are going to get into dreams. Have you ever had a dream that just keeps replaying over and over and over and over again and it might manifest with different characters at the same plotline honey. "I Heart radio. The team here 18. They're getting their Thanksgiving started just a little early, and you know, we were just talking about social media. And all of that, and one thing that was really trending on social media yesterday were the Grammy Award nominations, and I always tend to like the Grammys a bit more than some of the other award shows because I don't know. I know the music that helps like the Academy Awards. I never know what the movies are. I've never seen them before the Grammys. I've heard the songs, so I think it's a little bit more enjoyable that way, Sam, but damn it. I've seen Ah, lot of the show. So I like that one a little bit better to recap The Grammy Award nominations I have. Sonia Rao Washington Post Pop culture reporter Sonja Thank you so much for taking a few minutes to talk to us. And what was the big takeaway from the nominee? Asian announcement. You know, I think it's an interesting year for that. Actually, it's kind of a mix, I would say one part of the headline is, You know the people who often get Grammy nominations. So again, Beyonce got nine the most of anyone. It is now at 79 career nominations, which is You know, startling number of Taylor Swift's got a bunch, which is necessarily surprising, given how you know well received her album was this year. Then we have to Olympus. Well, who, you know, won best new artist Previously, she got a ton more this year as well. So I think you know in that part pretty, You know, it's what you'd expect from the Grammys. On the other hand, there were a lot of very strange. Nobody's thrown in. It's not even necessarily that they were like critical darlings that you know, maybe the mainstream population didn't know about. I actually noticed a lot of critics were saying, Wait, Who is that? So we see, you know, Album of the year the night's biggest award. Black Pumas, an artist who know a lot of people recognized Jacob Collier. You know, some people did not as many as you would think. Are you know that particular category? I think it's the weird year for sure. I think you know what we went with, literally for headlight was the Osik. That seems really notable numbers wise, but it's definitely it's kind of all over the place. If you're kind of weird things like why do you think that is that the Grammys decided to have as nominees some or obscure artists who most people might not know? It sounds almost like something you'd see at the Academy Awards. I was just gonna say Oh, you know, I'm going three major voting bodies here. So we're talking the Recording Academy, the film Academy to television Academy off those three. I think the Recording Academy has always been the hardest to read personally, Um, and I think a lot of it is because they're under constant scrutiny for their decisions. Every single year. It feels like they've never really get it right. A lot of people have been saying that the Grammys are increasingly relevant, honestly. Um as they go on I think this year, you know, especially with the pandemic the way that it's affect album that affected the album releases a thin, You know pretty bad for the industry. A lot of artists have been hurt in terms of release schedules. You know, they aren't able to tour is much till they make all their money. Some people have been pushing dates. Some have just released it anyways. And hope for the best s so I think you know as a result of that, you know, the eligibility period went through August. So there were several months in contention that were affected by the pandemic. And I think as a result of that, we actually I mean, I personally expected we see a lot more bigger names. Because of that, you know, we see the Taylor Swift. Of the industry come out, You know, A lot of people are talking about the fact that the weekend was loved, even though his bonds lending like the top song of the year in terms of charts. I think You know, maybe there was a push to kind of go in a different direction. And they usually do. Um, internally, You know, there's been a lot of Back and forth and the management of the recording academy and the president was actually you know, she was fired in January of this year, and they've had an interim president since so there could have been, you know. New sentiment going around that they wanted to highlight different types of artists. Um, I will say there are some categories for you kind of do see, maybe a little bit of a shift in approach. I'm looking at country artists, for example, in rock as well. You know, it seems silly to kind of Boil it down to this, but there are a lot more women than we've seen in the past. And I think you know that's something that all awards bodies again. The big three that I just mentioned. You know, there's a lot of inequality in terms of who actually gets nominated for things I think, you know. There are notable changes in that sense. But the miracle who just a lot of random stuff there doesn't seem to be able to be explained. I'm joined by Washington Post pop culture reporter Sony around talking about the Grammy Award nominations for 2021 1 question. People always have when they're watching the Grammys that they take a look at the nominees. Record of the year and song of the year. What is the difference? Actually, this is a great question, because everyone does always have that. They watched him I'm record of the year goes to primarily, you know, for some form of it goes to the performer s. Oh, that's the name of the person that we're generally, you know, Used to seeing, Um, you know, everything I wanted, for example, is a song for my Billy. I'll ish So, Billy, I wish we'd get that reward. It also goes to the engineers, and it goes to the producer. So you know, it says Record of the year. You just think about the literal recording songs. Everyone involved in that kind of threw. That award goes to Over the year song writing that goes to the songwriters. The example I just brought up. Actually, Billy Eyeless would also be the person who would get that award because she and her brother Phinnaeus, happened to write that song and they were nominated. She was nominated in both categories. Himself. Yeah, I think Song of the year. Maybe songwriters of the year would have been a clear to name it. But those are the two. You know, That's the distinction there and his album of the year of all the awards you talk to these artists. Is that the one that they really want to take home if they're nominated for it. I mean, I would think so I am. You know, primarily, I do write about movies a lot, so I always find myself kind of making a parallel. So after it's like you said earlier in the early in the conversation, I would say that album of the year is probably the best picture. So I do think you know, it's probably the biggest deal on to go home with that one. And I think you know that's why a lot of people as you mentioned earlier were kind of surprised by how random is. This is not for these themes for that pretty big category and there are a lot of artists, you know. Who end up getting genre awards. So like, you know, best R and B album or whatever, in a lot of, you know, kind of controversy, or the backlash to Grammy nomination comes there and that distinction. A lot of artists, you know, particularly black artists are kind of stuck at the genre level, and Phil always rise to the album of the year nominations level. Um, that dynamic. They're pretty interesting as well. I'm joined by SONIYA round Washington Post Pop Culture reporter re capping the Grammy Award nominations. One category that really seems to have the Star power is best pop vocal album. That's where you see Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga. Harry Styles. Taylor Swift. What is it about that category? Is it just that genre? The pop genre? That's where the biggest stars tend to life? I think so. I mean, it goes to the genre again, Right? Like pop. You know those of the songs that end up on the radio those at the top 40 songs. There's a thought that people are really familiar with that. You hear at the grocery story here, you hear them everywhere. When I think because of that kind of deputy. These names are the bigger one. Um, I go back, though, again, the kind of the dynamics of music itself..

"Emmy and Grammy Award winning comedian Kathy Griffin. So we're talking about how you were blacklisted after going head to head with the Cheeto in charge. But my question is who was there for you when this was all going down? You know, it's it was a tough thing. I got a I got a great call from Cat Williams that day. He picked E. I picked up the phone and it was him And he Hey, said that he was with some friends and he was on speaker and he goes. I did this or why lady so already laughing and think to me, which is really true. He said. Get out of bed of paper, and I'm like, Oh, God. Okay, Here we go. And he goes right down the number of people that are gonna call you today and say they're behind you 100% At the end of the day you're going. You're going to see how many friends you have. And I always thought of that because there were three days and you know, certainly In the first couple of days, it was just too frightening for everybody. I mean, you know, it was nice when people sort of track to be down like Jim Carrey tracked me down, which was really nice. Don't really know him. I don't have a phone number. Anything. I've met a couple times, and he was really? Yeah, I was. I was like a hysterical mess. I'm not gonna lie. I was crying. Like I said, the lawyers were calling it was, you know, my agents were freaked out because they had to get security at their agency. They were getting death threats themselves. I later found out those death threats for robo calls. They weren't even people. It was like Computerized thing because I'm like on the algorithm, you know, and you know, so it was nice when Jim Carey reached out and he said he said, you know, you said the same to me. I'll never forget, he said. Take your time and process this. He said. You could, you know, really, just this is a significant thing..
