"What's going to be best for the project and not shying away? From the fact that movie stars are very important tool in your arsenal. They've been with us since the beginning of cinema. There's nothing wrong with putting movie stars in a movie. It's only a problem when they're misused. Yeah. Or it seems inappropriate or a distorts the project somehow, but there's nothing I think for an audience nothing more satisfying than seeing one of their favourite movie stars in a role that you feel like they were born to play like, that's that's like a real dopamine hit. Yes. I remember Tarantino San about Pulp Fiction how he used to. He loved John Travolta just felt like was movie star can really watch entre both in this movie. Yeah, I like John Travolta, and there's it's really hard for an actor to pass that point where people feel that way about that. But like when you had Julia Roberts was like those two. Thousand Brockovich, and she was just she made all substantial traces in the nineties. But then kinda went back to Julia Roberts, my best friend's wedding nodding HALE, and it's like oh, Julia Roberts. Yup. And then you hit her right as it's like, oh, she can do this too. And that's like the most unique performance of her career because she's Julia Roberts. But she's also, you know, it will you're absolutely right. That I was very aware that that the timing of this was was perfect. It was exactly what she wanted to be doing. So sheep saw very clearly what the movie could do for her creatively. I just come off. I've been approached about doing our Brockovich while we were doing out of sight 'cause it was same set of producers. They described as a member where I was standing on this out of the of the mansion at the end of the film. Our Brooks mansion has pitched me this idea. Between setups. And I literally said that sounds like the worst idea ever heard for film. Why would you think I would want to do that? Year and a half later. I'm in the middle of editing hell with the Limy, which are not it's not clear at the point that they reapproach me that that we were going to be able to figure that out yet. Like, it was it was one of the most terrifying, creative periods of my life, the months of editing, the Limy. Yeah, they came back to me the new draft of the script, and they came back to me. And suddenly a movie like that seemed to be the perfect thing that I should be doing. It's going in one direction. Yeah. It's very simple. All I've got to do is make sure I've got the camera in the right spot to capture this performance, and we're all going to be fine. So that that eighteen month period, you know, I just needed to move into another direction. But when I think back that that while that could have easily not happened. I was lucky traffic could not have been as as as easy. No. That was tough. One. We didn't have the money till three weeks before shooting 'cause the consensus was not drug movies ever made money, which was true. Yeah. And so every studio turned it down, and it was Graham king and berry Diller at USA films who came in three weeks before and said, okay, were Lou it it felt it was Scarface didn't make money. I I get get a a lotta. lotta viewed that as a drug. Was you know, kind of diploma Pacino extravagant true? Yeah. I mean. It felt to us like zeitgeist film like it was an election year yet it felt like this. This issue was like building like people wanted to talk about it. The sad thing is, and we sense this when we were making the film. You could make that movie every five years because nothing's changing fans in some ways things are worse. So at the time it felt it has to happen. Now, if we missed this window, it's going to close we'll never get to make this in the funny thing was that traffic from a traffic in Aaron were not hard oceans was hard Osias Oiseaux should side..

I think that's a silly thing to talk about around this time, but he gives a great performance, and the reason this movie works at all is because he obviously gave everything he had to it and worked his ass off and get very nice ver-, very very sincere speech perhaps to sincere. It was. It was not one of the knights. Best beaches. I agree bohemian. The also won for best drama, which is she's fucking weird. Like, it's just it's just just really stupid. This movie is not good. It's not worthy of being in the category. It's also a false category option. Like, there's just so many things about this. There's no mention of Bryan singer during the telecast, he filmed approximately sixty percent of this film. He's obviously a pariah right now in the industry. I know we said a million times every likes to listen to queens. Songs? I I love to listen to Queen songs. Let the louder the better. But this is this is like a joke. This is why people are like this award show sucks. I green book is why people are like this is why this war show sucks. And I think that this is why people are like, I don't respect the Golden Globes because this is so stupid. It's six of one half dozen of the other. There's a there's a little bit of difference because the green book thing is just kind of like, and this is low what? And size. Started speaking internet terms. But it's funny in our in the ringer slack about the worship inmate at people were dissecting this went, and there were a lot of people saying, you know, what I had fun bohemian rhapsody. And so did everyone, I know and guess what I did too. We have to able as a society and also as people who freaking vote on awards, even if they're made up ones, and you're not real journalists to tell the difference between movies that are fun and enjoyable and movies that are good. And this is this is this is the time to talk about the good movies and bohemian rhapsody is not one of them. That's what I have to say. When the as came out last week, the PGA nominations for best picture there were a few notable omissions, particularly if Beale street could talk, and but we interrupt see was on the list. And there are a couple of reasons for that. I think one of the reasons this is kind of secondhand wisdom that I've received as Graham king, the producer of the movie is a very well respected producer in Hollywood. He'd been dying to get bohemian f c made for many. Many years and he fought hard to get it done. And he got it to the studio with a real budget, and they did a big it really back any higher big time director, and he high he got the right star after many other people had been up for the role and didn't get it. And he pulled it off and it turned into a massive hit. And that's a good story for Hollywood. You know, they made a massive hit inside the studio system with and they made a new movie star. And they were able to celebrate show business in a way. So I get that. But I also think it's really gonna come at the expense of a lot of stuff..

What what are we hearing? Gosh, the majority of that is obviously, Freddie Mercury. But somehow they've they've found a way to to put me in there. And I can't I really can't tell you feel so seemless to me. And that's I think one of the greatest aspects of this film is even I watch it, and I cannot tell now I just want to reiterate that the majority of this. I mean, so much of it is Freddie's voice, and I never want to ever step in and pretend that I lent myself to so much of this. So now that you've taken singing lessons are you more comfortable singing. No, no. I say, I'm more comfortable dancing, more comfortable being onstage. I enjoy the piano. Now, I find meditative at one point and played upside down in the film, and I thought oh of all the challenges you're giving me twenty and the stage direction safe. No, Freddie, plays bohemian rhapsody upside down, and I thought come on give break did you not play at all? When you started. No, I'd never played a piano. Never touched a piano. I had to learn the guitar is well for crazy little thing called love, which didn't make it into the film. But everything was it was like going to a conservatory of music every day. One hour to hour spent singing two hours, a Pia, no for hours and movement and choreography. It was it was fascinating is going back to school. So what can you play on your own only bohemian rhapsody, and we are? Noodle every once in a while. So I'll call those original works. Let me reintroduce you. If you're just joining us. My guest is Romi Malik and he stars as Freddie Mercury in the new Queen movie, but he Mian rhapsody. He also stars in this series mister robot. "I think if it was earlier on I would have had more pause. What what really worked for me and the entire cast and crew I think is the subject matter prepared us because no one was out there kind of just, you know, checking in and clocking in. I guess is the right phrase, we all had done so much homework in came in so prepared and then. Obviously, we're playing a band, and and that kind of relationship took over the boys, and it it began to influence every other aspect of the set. This was a very very tight Nick group. And we had a absolute legend in Tom Siegel. Who is our? Yeah. Our DP who continued this cohesive vision for the rest of the movie and Graham king and Dennis O'Sullivan. Our producers were there every single day had Brian May, you know to talk to throughout. So when Dexter came on. It was just just continuing what we were doing and had a had a great time with decks because he's obviously such a talented actor in you know, that that was another way of working with with a director who. Communicates from an app perspective of of having been an actor. Yeah. Still is was was something that I found very helpful. So Romney's been an absolute pleasure. Thank you so much. Thank you. My pleasure. Okay. So and that's now talk about the film, which he stars. It is behemoth rhapsody is the long in development bio pic of Freddie, Mercury. And Queen who believe sold a few records are to over the years ought to be making this one. It is this is directed interested enough by Bryan singer. Now, of course, he was fired by FOX, which is if you to go on the production, but he gets full credit despite the Dexter Fletcher came in to finish the film off. So that's oversee in the background in the background. But what do we make the Phil? Well, so it is a very kind of straight head bio-pic. I think you know, there's the flashback from the key concert moments through, Freddie, mercury's life. It's honest. They like walk hard never happened. But I it's a fairly serviceable quick run three, you know, Freddie, Mercury in particular. But Queen is a holes kind of rise to fame as stadium rockers. I don't know where they hair rox stadium. Rock one of these both of those possibly may have invented both. They may have the film is I think that's quite a good job of explaining. You know, what was different about them? What was interesting about them? And how they made themselves standout achieve the levels of success that they it's also really good on their live performances and getting some of the Tristan those across and a lot of that is down to Rummy. Malik fantastic performance. As Freddie Mercury. I think he's he's obsolete. Wonderful. He is the the key weapon in this films selling points..
