"For a guy like Julio or Matt or Grady Jarrett, or, you know, so when those moment happening, guys are making those kind of places you have to do some Let's make some adjustments to make sure this guy's not. You know where you know he can affect the game and be a game record. So Adam blitzed a lot. He was a physical tackler is certainly you know, Ah factor for their defense yesterday. As you look at the other side of the ball Q. On your side of the football on offense. What did you expect at a Todd Gurley from a numbers standpoint? Did you guys have a number in mind as to how much work load you wanted him to have? He was brilliant early. Obviously, the offensive line is to create those opportunities for him, but he certainly had something going for you guys early in a football game. Yeah, And I think having balanced our trust is going to be a big deal. I think maybe 14 or 15 rounds or something in that space, you know, heading into halftime and so for us to have that kind of balance, That's when we're at our best because Not only is it good for the run games also good for the plate passed that goes with it. And Todd actually not just the run game, but in protection wise kept MacLean had to get, you know, hit on a couple of lineman or line back whose blood thing so I thought overall, his first game as a falcon was certainly one that were encouraged by. I think it'll just keep improving As we go. You continue. C guys grow cue that you've gotten in the draft guys, you went out and drafted Maybe not quite as high as it is, and people don't pay attention to him. But a guy like Russell Gage, who's going to be our player guest today on your show. You told me about this cackle Piers. Go. Hey, don't just settle in on him as a special teams Guy, watch this guy. He's a receiver, and he blossomed the euro. Go with 49 receptions and well, he was a good as anybody in the field yesterday. He's got such a change of direction and explosiveness art that he's the ideal person to play in the slot. He's got quickness to break you off in, man. A man I think you've shown Based on the special teams background. The toughness for him to make catches over the middle to go are charging after things. He made some physical blocks, so he's been an excellent addition in the slot role for us so We continue to feature him and different and new ways. But I think you all are seeing that there's a real role for rough in this offense. And he certainly took advantage of his opportunities yesterday to how did you the offensive lying grayed out for yesterday? You know, we thought for a couple of guys. It was some of their best play that they've had a while. Carpenter was one We thought he played a really rock dollars game for him. Hey, was aggressive. Him and Hennessy both, you know, flips on that the At the left guard. But past that I thought, you know, over on the right side with McGary and Lindstrom. They hold protection was good. And so that's what we're looking for Art to make sure they would make the jump. Near one in the year two to allow the offense to grow with them as a part of it in the run game on DH protection, so first time out to them as the right side together. In 2020. You know, we're excited to see that those guys get going. I think we'll do him improve as they go the whole way. You think they Hayvenhurst is going to play even a bigger role As we move forward made an outstanding grab on one play on over route that little layout make a catch for Matt. Ah, How did you see him in the run game Because I think he's going to play big pay dividends there. I think that you like him is a dual threat guy. Then it'll help in the run game as well as being able to go out and make some plays in the past game. Yeah, The speed is there and I was disappointed. He wasn't able to get the two point conversion and only thought he had a chance at it. And you saw the speed, But that was a corner that he was matched up again. So All of the the way you can feature a tight end with that kind of speed. We're certainly going to do with that theme routes and big over, you know, to get behind, you know a linebacker, but As far as in the run game. I think it's the urgency. You know, they get off the ball, try to get into the block or going behind the line of scrimmage to go make a cut this tough competitors and I think The more he plays that Maurits almost like the Russell gauge of fact, the more he's going to go, the stronger he's going to get, and we plan on just continuing to work him into the office. I think as he's going, he's just going to keep getting better week by week. And his role will even get stronger as it goes. "Anything. It's something that when I do this I recognize that I mean it's not often that you sit around and talk with <hes> you know a head coach for half hour a general manager for forty five minutes the best the one of the best quarterbacks in the League for fifteen minutes Arising Defensive Star for twenty five minutes so it's those are the kind the things that I think are really important in this job and it's one of the reasons why I like the tour so let's get to our first conversation greedy eighty Jarrett the defensive tackle the Atlanta Falcons whose gone from the fifth round in a very disappointing crushing draft day with Atlanta to now he is one of the rising star defensive tackles and football and I met him on the practice field after the Monday practice of the Atlanta Falcons really happy to be joined by one of the N._F._L.'s newest zillionaires Grady Jarrett of the Atlanta Falcons so greedy were were out here at practice in flowery branch Georgia. You're a kid who's from here. I want you to tell me what what it felt like. When you took out a pen and signed a contract for whatever was sixty eight million or some ridiculous sum of money is tell me what that day okay and that moment was like for you? It was a it was a very very very special moment for me. It was a lot longtime. Come a lot of hard work went into it and is almost surreal almost surreal. I felt like it was so much work that went into it. Let's go back in time in your life draft weekend. You get drafted crafted. You're so tell me what happened. First of all how how did you feel about going in the fifth round first of all and then tell me what happened that weekend that was a little bit bigger than football is so you know going into the draft definitely excited autumn media outlets saying you know late first second second round pick in the draft on the first night you know they get through the whole first round and <hes> I'm really disappointed. Man I think the browns making the last big luther around they took a defensive tackle to Xavier Cooper now slim iphone like draft in my house and I'm like May I don't know what's going on so for the third day. Come four coming on you. Imagine a day where your house catches on fire and you're already ticked off that you were drafted after the first round and then you have to watch for five hours and you're not drafted at all on that day could imagine your house on fire live through you know what I'm saying so so that's already already an emotional battle to going on already so the third they come. Falcons, Deion Jones reach $57M deal through '23
"And it's a local note for me but it becomes a national story DR Jones locked up by the Atlanta Falcons today fifty seven million dollar deal that's going to run through twenty twenty three this comes on the heels of just a couple of days ago they locked up or defensive tackle in Grady Jarrett to a long term contract extension and it's very well rumor down here that Julio Jones is going to get his contract extension in the next couple of days falcons will have their core basically locked down for numerous years it which is good lot of people that don't understand the salary cap the looking to go wait a second are you given DR Jones thirteen million dollars a year on average he's only going to make a million dollars this year Grady Jarrett skating you know for years what was it sixty eight million dollars seventeen million dollars a year on average how does that affect the salary cap well the way that these teams and it's not just that land it's every team in the NFL moves around the salary cap when you get these guys to long term deals as opposed to the franchise tag and we talked about Houston Texans last night as opposed to what they're doing with JV and cloudy you get a long term deal and they'll pay them in different ways to give a signing bonus that for whatever reason doesn't count against the cap or you give them an up front bonus it doesn't count against the cap teams can now maneuver money around to make the salary cap fit on a year to year basis that's when you see guys like drew Brees or Tom Brady kind of renegotiating their contract they'll be okay they're going to get the entire amount of money that they were gonna get anyway but they moved around to make a team friendly where these teams now can go out and sign more players falcons are a team that when healthy can absolutely be a playoff team in the NFC and can be one of the best playoff teams in the NFC again if healthy last year health completely derailed the franchise fee on Jones this ten games greatly missed for five games he got on the played a half of football in the opener they had injuries at running back with Montee free of the offense of line with the fifth but a lot of people think this team could be one of the contenders and I'm here to tell you to watch the falcons I would not be surprised if that football team is eleven or twelve when football team coming up in twenty nineteen and they're playing in

"It's only a four year the deal and I think everyone assumed it would be a five or even the six year deal because Aaron Donald Guy the six year deal Fletcher Cox got a six year deal. This was only four and what's interesting about that is grady will be thirty at the time. I'm the this contract is expired in twenty a he'll be a free free agent for the twenty twenty three season. If he's thirty that's reasonable age for him to get another big on-track. So do you think that that the team in Jarrett's were settled on four years knowing that it would open up another big potential payday for him down the road as opposed to try and get all in upfront. I think so and I think you know realistically. The way player contracts going these days that guys are playing longer. I think than they used to not universally but certainly a lot of position it makes a ton of sense for jared you know just just from accounting staff level. He had a very good year last year but if you didn't really look at how he played and you didn't really look at anything beyond its sack totals and so forth you could say oh we missed two games. The only had six sacks he I think think was aware that you know if he wants to get near Aaron. Donald money with you know who doesn't I want to <hes> it would help him to to build a resume of few more great years prime and I think that is perfectly reasonable to I think that he he he and his camp stipulated that wasn't going to be a five or six year. Deal was going to be a four year deal to give them that potential for for more earnings down the line and I think in that way maybe that's the sacrifice. The Falcons had to make get it's don price they wanted and I think they'll take that <hes> but certainly if daredevil world-beater as expected to be the next four years things will get dicey in on the twenty two. I can't Belva his last last season. He'll be twenty nine and his cap hit now this. This is an important pieces cap hitting twenty twenty two and we don't know what the salary Cap O._B.. There's a big <hes> renegotiation coming up between the Players Association and the owners next year <hes> but his cap hidden twenty twenty two currently projected twenty one point seven five million. There's a good chance the falcons will want to get him back to negotiating table instead of letting him play out the final year of this contract so he'll be twenty nine that season are still relatively young in football years seasoned veteran that point but still young <hes> so I do think you're right that there it'll get dicey..

That's a guy who seeks and smells the end zone every player who's ever blocked for understeer guys who have different mindset when they get inside aside the reds and they've got a different mindset when they get near that touchdowns guys they finish those guys just don't fall off it is it is a big difference in no style Bax. That's why Tom to Lesko and the chargers are thinking they may have to overpay. Maybe break their scale of where the ceiling is that they have on a running back because he's that productive for them in this offense and coach Linda former tailback as well so he's developing these guys are pretty darn good pop it off Justin Jackson good players again not Melvin Gordon Lord they may need just Jackson plays a big role. Everybody's looking for their money Monday four P._M.. Eastern deadline for any club that designated a franchise tag to sign the player to a multi year contract extension after this date. The player may sign only a one year contract with his prior club. The twenty thousand nine season in such contract cannot be extended until after the club's last regular season game so that's where all that stuff stands. Let's go through some of these guys. Just sorta solve off with Davy and cloudy and the G._M.. Texas yeah look but right there G._M.. Lists Right Jadeveon clowney will be the first guy to really face them detriment because the team doesn't have a G._M.. They are not expected to get a deal done. By July. Fifteenth that means the cloudy. We'll would be playing this season under the franchise tag fifteen point nine million dollars but this is also a guy who probably now going to miss almost all if not all of training camp they don't expect to see until the regular season cloudy though it looks like does plan to play starting the regular season. It's pretty there you go. Atlanta Studt Grady Jarrett that defense attack was like that's right. Greg Jarrett has signed his tender but this has been a priority for the Falcons all season long. They want to get him done and they need to get him done. This is a team that's got guys like Julio Jones. Dionne Jones Kiana Neil Austin these guys all need to somehow wind up under the salary Cap Thomas to Meech off the team gentlemen as a task and it starts with Jared Robbie golden kick this one. They'd be my favorite I never done with Oh. Don't tell you about this. Here's here's a guy who's still hasn't signed his tender forty niners. No Al Valuable Cater certainly is he's basically saying we'll see what happens. Once that deadline occurs he doesn't have to do anything until then like a long term deal after that he says we'll see so this one just kind of up in the air at this point has not signed his tender just yet though fifteenth four P._M.. Like he doesn't like San Francisco. What's the deal? He likes San Francisco Bay Chicago. Oh it's about the money more so than butcher family by the way I we'll see what happens before that deadline line. We've talked about the trade talks and all that kind of thing Greg Jarrett the one that group that I think gets done the rest. I'm a tricky okay sounds good. What's your single biggest issue with the franchise the N._F._l.? Setup with regard to the tag can we can. We get rid of the franchise tag seriously. I mean listen anyone who falls mail social media I'm big N._B._A.. I love the N._B._A.. And the off season the free agency period for the N._B._A.. Just been to me has been fascinated imagine like the in the N._F._l.. Without the franchise day with all the different players being able to have been basically been unshackled and just have these bidding war and all these moving pieces trying to give your heart attack I think it would be I'd like to me it would be chaos.

"And I will also say this to you. You know, you mailed it on Nikki's Ston, Brunell, sincerity you were as high on Grady. Jarrett is there is any analysts that was out there. You loved Grady Jarrett. You said it often he went in the fifth round. And the guy just yesterday signed is fifteen point two million dollar franchise tag. I did you invent the disruption is production. Is that is that did you invent that? Josh, you know, I'll make a claim for it. But I'm sure there was someone, you know, fifty years ago that said the same thing. But yes, I mean, and Greg Jarrett item is I think like the number twenty three overall prospect that year and Ross I maybe I like Grady Jared as much as you like Princeton prospects who knows dude debt that was your shining moment that should be the name, by the way disruption is production. All right. So how about this guy is my favorite? Okay. Because it is unbelievably crazy. How polarized people are on keen Butler. I mean, I see some people that don't have them as a tough ten receiver. A lot of what you do is based on their athletic profile, but even Greg Cosell who I have on the Ross Tucker football podcast every week loves Hakim Butler based just on the tape. So what do you see? And what gives with this guy yet? It's interesting Ross and really this receiver classes, a whole I love it. And a lot of people are down on it. I actually have five receivers ranked I believe in the top twenty four and in many ways Ross, I think the big wide receiver is back. You remember back to the two thousand eleven NFL draft that featured Julio Jones and AJ green. I think a lot of teams. We're kind of chasing those types of prospects. For years is true number ones, those X Eissa receivers and that. Fail. Devaluate Benjamin to Kevin white to shot Perryman. Devante Parker and in many ways, as you know, what the receiver position Ross it moved to this create separation sustain it then went after the catch like one in the open field. I truly think the big wide receiver is back this year. And to me came Butler's, the number one. And it's because he won on the left side. He won on the right side. He won the left slot. He wanted the right slot. You turn on his game against I while you see him run this whip route for again for like six five two hundred and twenty pounds on fourth and one and creating separation instantly against a smaller defensive back. Then you also see him in this class lead it and twenty plus yard receptions and yards on twenty plus yard completions. I mean, he really he really does win at every level of the field. Plus Ross there are often many exposures where he shows.

"But it says eighteen they're gonna make enough to you're gonna rush the passer hundred time and to be plagued the seventeen sluts decent games rep. But at last year there were very few flashes. Like, all that's the Beasley that was ironically, the sacking twenty sixteen looking back on who led the league in sacks. Just Vic visi tells it sixteen that will never make sense. Though, it won't hurts because it was really excited because you've twice exchanges because everyone knows falcon fans a bit crazy for Russian for years ever since John Abraham cut. They just one that explosive big play this week depend on week in week out to generate pressure in Spezia, just has been unfortunately in the I think this is one thing they keep an eye on in two thousand nineteen is you know, what he does also what what tat McKinley does and potentially a draft pick as you mentioned Allen. This is a. Potentially very deep deep class defensive line talent in and hopefully the falcons will take advantage of it. So with that we're going to wrap up this week's podcast Allen. Thank you for joining us. Again, it's been longtime one have you back on more frequently. So why don't you tell our listeners where they can find you what you've got going on. This is the pivotal year for franchise 'cause when's now the full fence according responsibilities and the pressures on because sees only again berry seemed teams at the Packers improving. "Yeah. Yeah. The guy the guy name the Spanish him came from the. No came from a giant say, I can't even keep a straight. All I knows his name is Spanish for him. And and he is a very a very large, man. These of the things. I'm gonna look it up because I had no idea this guy was and let me see here. Jim Jim Brown. Yes. He is six foot four three hundred and forty pounds. According to PF. Spent some time in LA and most of the season with the giants big big do which we'll talk about that in the second the other name, which I think I was getting him crossed up with was James carpenter. And I believe he came from the jets if I'm reading this, right? Yes. Yes. He came from the jets. I knew that. Because one of our local radio guys Brandon leak. Rached outs made stay when Chris or walking our dog and asked me if I could get a jets and Chien's writer from Espy nation to talk to him about the signings. And I was like, that's right. They're both New York's EM. So that's why it's easy to mix them up. And then I had to look up our posts to be sorted that I was asking are jets giants guy to talk about the right people because I had never heard of this guys. So anyway for reference James carpenters, six foot five three hundred twenty one pounds. So. So what does that tell us? Boy is I think it tells us that we're gonna move away from the zone scheme. Because those those men can't move that fast. And I'm just being honest. It's not a criticism just being think that is. The big thing here that these are two massive human beings and. On the plus side. It looks like they're going to be far more stout impasse protection. If there's one criticism, you know, people have of the design blocking scheme when you have those smaller more athletic offensive lineman. Those seven step drops for quarterbacks tend to be more painful. And we saw that with Ryan we saw Ryan last year. He got sacked allot Allen. I know you saw it firsthand and doing your gift reviews where Allah. Ryan was constantly sort of under pressure in those deep drawbacks. And when we talk about the zone running scheme to lie people just say the zone blocking scheme, but in reality all teams run some variation of inside zone. It's the wide zone where you've got the backside cut blocks you've got guys, you know, really having to cover a lot of ground going out. Why giving the cutback lanes the running backs? I think that is what's going to be drastically reduced so Gina. I'll I'll ask you. What do you think about this move? And what it may signal as far as the falcons making that change, even though, you know, again Quin sort of said, no, we're not going to change our scheme..

"And I think in fairness he is if anything he has improved every single year that he has been on the falcons his his level of play has only gotten better, and he's not one of those players that suddenly had a great season his contract year. He is literally every season become a bedroom better player and even this past season just became one of our best pass rushers from the interior and the best pass rushers period, you know, interior or on the edge. He was one of our best ones for reference just looked it up. Fletcher Cox who elementary and recently got a six year contract hundred two million little over one hundred million with about sixty three million guaranteed averages out to about seventeen million per season. I think that is kind of number that he's realistically gonna get. I don't think he's going to get the same numbers. Aaron Donald got 'cause Donald is a generational talent that very very few people can compare to. But I would not be surprised to Ellen's point. If he gets let your Cox money because as we've seen and this comes up a lot I want to if you guys take just a quick second to address this because this comes up. Even if you think a player is not the top his position. So you think you know, he is not the best defensive tackle league. The the question isn't whether he is better than their Donald or whether he's better than Fletcher Cox. The question is if you let him hit the market will another team pay him like he is. And the answer is absolutely undeniably. Yes. If we'd let Grady juror at the market another team will pay him big money. And that's why you have to pay these guys you pay them to keep them. Because if you let them hit free agency they will walk away, and they'll get a big deal. Elsewhere, and then you have to consider what is the cost to replace a player of that caliber, you cannot draft a Fletcher Cox in every single draft class. You cannot draft a Grady Jarrett in every single draft class. Maybe you can find another decent player, but a player of this caliber, even if he's not the number one player at that position. If he's the number five. Player that position pay the man to Allen's point you pay him. Now into three years. He's not going to be the highest played paid position player that position it all fleshes out. But the worst thing you can do is nickel and dime and try to get his salary right under Fletcher Cox 'cause you think that's where he ranks technically. This is this is not Madden. Not how this works in the real world, you pay the guys, and they keep resetting the contract deals every year, and it may not seem fair. But that's how the NFL has always worked Sajida you want to add anything onto that that my little mini rant there. I just want to reemphasize that great chair have three sex on Tom Brady and the Super Bowl. And so again that is enough in my mind to keep him. And since that time I mean that whole season. And then since that time he is really established himself as instrumental to the fell cans. He has such great burst off the snap. His size really helps him be disruptive. They've gotta keep him. He's just a great player. He was such a steel where they drafted him. They've gotta keep. Eight.

"What is that's a separate conversation for another podcast, but we will leave the cuts there that is the the four main names that the falcons boot on from didn't want touch on those and just get some thoughts. Out there, though fans probably still reeling from the Matt Bryant cut more than anything totally get it. But now on the talk about some of the players that the falcons are looking to keep or give extensions to and the first name on the list, which I think caught a lot of fans off guard was quarterback. Matt shaab? He's he is back. Again. The guy has got another two year contract. I will say it is very team friendly contract for a quarterback that even Matt Ryan has said is a very important piece to their offense. He he helps him a lot in the quarterback room. You know, heat. The the team basically has a two year deal with twenty twenty being an option year. So it's really a one year deal. Maybe two. So Jean I'll start with you. First your thoughts on the team keeping Matt Shaab yet again when everyone kind of thought he was going to disappear into the either. Has been a balcony tradition. The make really weird decisions backup quarterback. MS surprised? No. This is exactly what I thought was going to happen. Do I think that it makes the most sense? No, I'm the same person who has been saying draft amid around quarterback and let him learn develop behind Matt Ryan. And then sif he's good. And if he is if met still good than you trade them like Jimmy Garoppolo. Okay. I mean, maybe not that good. But you know, what I mean? And if he if he is if he is good than that. Sure. You know, Matt Ryan air parents. I mean, they've gotta start thinking about life after Matt Ryan, and I can tell you one thing with great certainty life after Matt Ryan eight Matt shop. On that play. He came in for Vic in the first game that I ever went to two thousand five against the Minnesota Vikings. I watch Mashhad play. I was so much younger than and so was Matt Shaab, and he actually not very good. Then this. Any sense? I would rather just roll with Kurt banker and see if he can develop and not spend this money on shop. This is probably the signing. The I am most up in arms about I didn't even realize I was fired up about until I started talking about. All right. That's my time. Alan any passionate thoughts about the backup quarterback for the kids. Could of crazy things. Matt Ryan if he plays sixteen games this year, it'll be ten years since he last the game because we're a ninety suffered miss do games and miss. And a half. Yeah. He didn't start two games and missed another. Maybe it was like three quarters. He's been durable. It's believable by still basically look concert because just like helmets. How much longer could keep their street live. But nothing is this match thirty eight this year any hasn't star born to game since two thousand thirteen and that was the raiders, which as knows the dumpster fire. So at the. So I I don't get the resigned though. Look if you'll have somebody that's if Lynch law crew so bed vice guidance but wanted so that some play baking billion anxious. I think mesh off at a coven for snap your resists. These are less. It was against the eagles. Because I remember I was there. I think it was actually opening night. Maybe because Matt Ryan Denise hurt. Like is the brace initial? NS? Yes, Sean came any Bosch the handoff. Like, you couldn't even hand. Sony. That's able to move in be sort of threats downfield. I'll. He just won the guys that, but you would hope at some point. Yeah. I think he's a player that. People. Call him a coach in in on the field. But he's really just a two million dollar voice. Here. Here's here's a suggestion because they could actually cut him hire him as an assistant coach same amount of money that doesn't count against the cap and he can stand on the sidelines and hold the goddamn ward. And they can get an actual backup quarterback. Who's not under navy years old like I'm not a GM or anything. But it's just an idea..

"So your thoughts on a mat Brian this. Well, I mean, obviously, I was very sad to see Matt Bryant go. I mean, he's been such an integral part of so much the team success since he came here. I love him as a person I love him as a player, but when you look at his cap it when you look at the performance of tobacco when he had to fill in for Brian's, and he was spectacular. And so I think when you look at the fact that the falcons could save money by doing that. And that Bryant's career has a finite amount of time left in it. I think that it does make sense to go to somebody younger save a little bit of money, especially considering the cap situation. So I don't like it. But yeah, I get it. Alan your thoughts Jeanne abrupt Vecchio, do you think he was a major factor in the team deciding to move on from the the longtime kicker. Remember the Monday night game has to giants. He made like fifty three archaic that made it to possession game. Oh, is it was reliable based on the few games? They played it in. I know things didn't go quite right in Oakland. But he showed some promise there. I think the one big concern about the movie just met Brian is probably one the eight reliable kickers football. As no kickers guests bear fans. Guess like fans that good hall you for many years ago. Buffs fans as well. Hopefully, don't spend a second pick one. But it's on a stable move. It's under still it does not allow liability at the kicker position Bryant breeze. It's you even though he is spoilt four. But look at the colts have Terry. I know he's alleged. But he's somebody that still kick out also results seal pans out at if velcro is reliable as is or at least the organization Bolivia's, the people get over the loss pretty quickly and tobacco by comparison. Believe is twenty nine maybe thirty years old. So he still has a lot of years ahead of him again, assuming that he? He continues to play. Well, like he did last year. And I I do think personally he was a big factor in this. I think the writing was on the wall when they signed him to a two year contract. I think a lot of fans thought okay, they're going to bring both guys in the camp and let them compete. But at some point, you know, the fifteen year difference between them I think that it was just too much to ignore. And the fact that Bryant did get injured, you know, I think it made the team look at his health and take that into strong consideration. Because I'll tell you guys when you get up to your your mid forties. The healing does not happen. Nearly as fast as it does. When you're in your twenties thirties, it takes much longer to heal from the the Nag's in Bunsen bruises that you you suffer. So. Danny how we're gonna move on the Matt Brian. I think is is similar fans..

"You know him for his in-depth analysis pieces and his his gift Jif gifts. Jeff, whichever his gift reviews on Twitter. Just probably started other Twitter fight over how the pronounce that is Bill while, but we're glad to have Alan Cirque back on the official podcasts. Alan how you doing man. It's to us nineteen is still the law said, so. Gene is gift or Jif? Well, the crater says that it's a hard G, and I would tend to default to the person who holds the electoral property. I think that if he thinks it's a hard g it's a gif. I'm not gonna get into fights about this like hotdogs and says I'm just going to say, it's my preference to say gif, if you say Jif, I'm not going to crack you I think to each his own. Let's just all live and let live. Absolutely. We're gonna leave that there. Because that is that is the fight that I just don't have the energy for. But we have got a hot to talk about because in the off season. The falcons have made some moves. They've some were expected some are unexpected we are basically at the time of this recording. We are less than two days away from the start of the official two thousand nineteen NFL season. Which also means the start of free agency official free agency not the tampering period. Like we're in right now. So I wanted to start first guys with the cuts. We we have not had a chance to talk about this on the podcasts. And some of these are pretty significant, and I wanna start at the very top with the name that I think many fans were caught off guard by many fans are still upset by if you sort of scan it, but in a funny way, many fans sort of understood this move by the falcons, and that was the team cutting longtime fantastic kicker Matt Bryant. Actually, they didn't cut him. I think we should clarify that for those who are wondering they just did not pick up his option for the two thousand eighteen season which technically makes him a free agent. They just they let him go ahead of time that they were locking to pick up that option Sajid, I'm going to start with you first on, you know, your thoughts about Brian whether or not you saw this coming what you think about this move since Bryant's going to be forty four. This may obviously it's an old age for football. You and I both know it's an old age. And okay. Quite there but met Bryant is not a young, man..

"No reason to go off topic today. Even though we are still a week away from free agency, plenty of stuff happening combine wrapped up yesterday. I don't understand that. The the reason to have it spill into a Monday. I guess they can't jam everything into the weekend by Monday, nobody really cares by Monday. Everybody's moved on Monday to do the defensive back drills. I saw the critique from some of the folks who were handling the coverage of it on NFL network. They weren't real impressed with defensive back. Sounds like the defensive line is far and away the strength of this year's draft at least based upon the underwear Olympics in that who knows we'll see how it all. Plays out. Today is the deadline for the application the franchise tag. And it's funny. Nobody wants to have an Email situation where they screw something up and failed to get the notification where it needs to be by four PM eastern on Tuesday the last day for applying the franchise that transition tag. So plenty of people dumped it out yesterday. There were five in all on. Defensive lineman, primarily pass rushers on top of the Robby. Gold franchise tag. That was applied last week. And I think that was done just to make sure that all the other teams at the scouting combine new to not bother to try to negotiate with or express interest in gold to his agents. So gold was off the market a week ago as of yesterday DeMarcus Lawrence as avian clowney as expected. Frank Clark as expected d Ford as expected and Grady Jarrett all five. The franchise tag applies to them. There could be more today. Although I saw the report that CJ Moseley has been told I it's fun. And I don't want to rip anybody here prematurely. I don't wanna go prison. Mike him in a fairly good mood. But I saw the report from I think it was shefty that. The ravens have told C J Moseley's representatives that they won't be applying the franchise tag. Well. Okay. Who's the source per source? Ravens have told C J Moseley's representatives. They won't be applying the franchise tag. All right. Well, thanks. That's his representatives of the source. I mean, it's just kinda weird. Like, why want anybody go on the record with any of this stuff? Like, why can't the agent just say, yeah. They told me the not applying the franchise tag. Anyway, CJ Moseley will not be franchise tag. And I don't know if there's anybody else out there that there's a consideration there's a negotiation that's going right up until the break an effort to sign someone to a long term deal in you in lieu of using the franchise tag. What we've seen in the past are situations where they'll be two guys who are candidates for the franchise tag team will try to get one signed to a long term deal. And then the other one will end up being tagged. Nothing like that this year. This is all about holding guys in place for another year. At least with the goal of getting the. Player signed to a long term deal. Although for some of these it may just be keeping around for a year. It may be setting up a possible trade. With ford. There's been reports already that the chiefs are willing to consider trading him and the reasoning for that. At least the stated reasoning for that is the shift in the defense from a three four zero four three now. I've never seen as being issue before every once in a while there's a guy that's a Twitter, and they're not quite sure. Whether he's big enough to be a four three defensive end. But it could be a three four outside linebacker mean. Typically when you change the scheme. The outside linebacker becomes a defensive end. If it's a three four zero four three of its four three two three four defensive end becomes an outside linebacker. That's how it works. That's how it goes. It's it's not a it's not a huge shock when this happens, and so many of these fronts are hybrid. And when they go into a standard pass, rush the three four essentially is a four three and the outside linebacker puts his hand in the dirt. I just really think that the chiefs are very sensitive to the fact that d Ford could make a strong argument and SIMS mentioned this yesterday, and we've written a couple of things about it. A PF TD Ford could make a fairly strong argument that he is a defensive end that he should be tagged at the higher number. And it is about one point seven million. And I know that's not a huge amount. When you're talking about these franchise tenders at a creeping up toward twenty million. But still it's almost one point seven million. And when you're looking at the starting point of a term deal, the higher you start the more that deal becomes as you get into your two year three or four at cetera. So I think d- Ford could and I think he should fight his designation. I think jadeveon clowney tagged is now side linebacker could consider doing the same thing. Now, DeMarcus Lawrence and Frank Clark, both tagged defensive end. So it's not an issue because defensive end is the higher franchise tender, and I think of all these guys I would say the most likely to get a long term deal is Frank Clark. He was not a high draft pick not a first round or he's not going to be pushing for maximum dollars. I think he'll be more likely to say, I'll take a long-term deal that pays me. Really really really good money not spectacular money. But really, really. Really good money to remain a member of the Seattle Seahawks. And this is the first big expenditure. The Seahawks will be making as they've transitioned from a team that had a bunch of older guys who were making a ton of money. And now they are moving toward the younger guys who at some point you've got to pay and Frank Clark, the first one that they have to pay of this new wave we ask P Carol about this last week as well the idea that Frank Clark kind of called it like it was last year during the season he arrived after Super Bowl forty nine. He was in that first draft class after the devastating loss to the patriots. And clark. Came out and said, hey, look, there are a lot of guys here. The start a problem with the way that game ended we had to get rid of them before we can truly move on. They had to move on. So we can move on. And plenty of those guys are gone now. Most of those guys are gone now, especially the guys who would have had an issue the kind of issue that they just can't let it go. Some of them were flagged early and moved some of it took a few years. You can't just turn over your roster overnight. You gotta make it work for a couple of years before you can make those changes and the Seahawks have and now Frank Clark is going to benefit from it financially. Either on this one year franchise tender or through the big money. The long-term deal will entail. With cloudy. I'd be upset this idea that well, we wonder how committee is and does he work hard enough? He gets it done, and you wouldn't be tagging him. If you didn't think he gets it done. First Brown picked the first overall pick in two thousand fourteen never got the huge payday because of the rookie wage scale that was put in place to make sure that guys don't steal money out of the system when they become busts. That was the argument made back in two thousand ten two thousand eleven the idea that that there's the periodic jamarcus Russell Ryan leaf and it wasn't periodic. Half the guys taken in the top ten ended up being bused, and they were getting huge money, and that money could have gone to others. So they restricted the money that everyone gets in the top ten and even the guys who ended up being good get screwed. And then you just rely upon the willingness of the team to sign the guy and as relates to cloudy Texans, never got JJ watt. They gave him his contract after three years if I'm cloudy. I'm upset. Now, the problem is you don't have a lot of options. If you're a franchise tag player, you can stay away from everything you can stay away from offseason workouts training camp preseason show upright at Labor Day weekend. Say here, I am signed my tender and off we go the risk. You take is they rescind the tender, and if they rescind the tender at the wrong time, you end up having a hard time getting kind of money that you otherwise would have gotten under the franchise tag. Or if you had been on the open market at the start of free agency. But that's the option. The team has if the player decides that he's not going to accept the franchise tender and not show up. Demarcus Lawrence is a guy who has said he's not gonna sign the tender this year last year, he jumped on it at seventeen point one million this year twenty point five six million. He doesn't want he wants a long term deal. I know that's a lot of money to walk away from. But. He has the seventeen point one from last year. And obviously anytime we talk about these kind of numbers he had to pay taxes he had to pay fees. He has expenses if he has five to six million leftover that's a pretty good savings from the seventeen point one. But that's six million should last you a long time. And if he decides to sit out the whole year like lady on bell did last year. See Lebanon bell is provided franchise tag players with a template for year one stay away until Labor Day weekend. You're to stay away altogether. Because then if they wanna tag you a third time they have to apply the quarterback number, and are they going to do it would they do it Lawrence has that different leverage though? Because second time for him means next year forty four percent race. He's looking at a twenty nine million dollar franchise tender for next year highly unlikely that the Cowboys would pay that kind of money would they'd even be able to Lawrence could take the twenty point five six and be guaranteed. A shot at the open market next year. Most the Cowboys could do is transition tender at a twenty percent increase. You're looking at quarterback money. They're twenty percent increase over twenty point five six million. So I think Lawrence could get the twenty point five six million and hit the open market next year. The question for him is is the risk of the kind of injury. That would keep him from getting the major payday the slam dunk over the top windfall. And it's not a windfall because he's guys earn their money. But is it worth twenty point five six to risk the kind of injury that would make you not get the big money next year? Grady, Jared, I think ends up during a long term deal with the falcons. But again, we'll see with him. He's in that first tag as well. So that's it. So far for the tags six in all, and maybe some more as we get through the final day of the two-week franchise tag window, and that sets the stage for where we go with free agency. We have our top one hundred PF, I think one of the folks on the top one hundred has signed a long term deal and grant gets who's that grandad eagles. Yes. I'll take your word for it. I don't have the list in front of me. But I'll take your word for it. Why guys getting the franchise tag? I mean Gould, but that's it. Well, I goal kickers not an offensive guy. Why would you call a kicker and offensive guys scores points that doesn't make him an offensive guy. I think it's offensive that. You would call him an offensive guy. He's a kicker. He's a kicker. He's not an offensive player lady on bell. He's not getting tagged. What are the guys are out there? Nick foles. There was talk about him being franchise tag there. There isn't a great crop of quarterbacks receivers and running backs that will justify it this year. And the thing about ofensive line guards in centers rarely if ever get tagged because offensive line is all in the same bucket for purposes, the franchise tag, which means as a practical matter the franchise tag, ends up being the left tackle tag. So if you want to pay your center or your guard what essentially as the left tackle franchise tag? Then that's what that's what you would end up doing if you would tag a guard or a center, so I look this year. Quarterbacks there. There are only a small handful that are hitting the market. And there's a reason they're hitting the market if they were great they'd be under contract defensive line is where it's at pass. Rush is the next most important thing behind quarterback. So pass rushers to no surprise are being franchise tagged in droves this year. All right..
Grady Jarrett Given Franchise Tag by Falcons with Goal of Agreeing New Contract
"Dan buyer bunch of NFL teams using the franchise tag today. I'm players is tomorrow is the deadline to do. So we start in Dallas Cowboys for the second straight year will use the franchise tag defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence. There are reports out of big d that Lawrence has no intention to play twenty nineteen under the franchise tag. Decides would have until mid-july to work out a long term contract extension. Texans placed the tag on offensive engine. Debbie and cloudy Seahawks. Did the same with the fence event. Frank Clark while the falcons plays the tag on defensive tackle

"This seems like the kind of front that the eagles could take advantage with with their with their run. Game. I could see that because you want to get that kind of front. I guess I was going to say, you wanna get a moving, but then we have to bring in the speed of the falcons linebackers to the equation. Do you run straight at the falcons or do you try to run east and west against him, which is really where the eagles well, the their creative and their east and west run. They do some nice stuff in there. North and south run game to a lot of trap plays in Wham concepts. Were they leave I level or defensive line. Defenders leave him on blocked and they go right up to the linebackers. I would think you'll see some of that stuff that would make good sense against them for one is a great way to combat a gap shooter like Grady Jarrett. You fake block them, and then you let him in the backfield by then he's run himself out of the play. That's the beauty of that part is now basically take care of their best defense alignment without having to dedicate a fulltime blocker on them. But then b.'s at fulltime blocker now becomes a fulltime blocker on the linebacker, and you want to get a body up on Jones because he is small and he's not going to shed that block very well. So I to answer your question, Gary. I think the eagles will see a lot of their stuff that a lot of their different schematic stuff. And the more I think about as we go along here, the more I believe it's going to be between the tackles. Yeah, north south running. No, absolutely. I think at the very least they have to, they have to test this this falcons interior front early on here and and see what they can get here. I would. I would agree with that and you want to get those linebackers reacting to you and your facing fast linebackers. And by the way, Duke Riley might be the fastest linebacker in Atlanta doesn't play. A whole lot will probably play more this year, but they've got three.
