President Donald Trump says the senior most intelligence officials in the country are quote naive. That's his word. In fact, he said on Twitter they are wrong and suggested that they should quote, go back to school. The president made those remarks about his own intelligence officials the morning after they testified about global threats on Capitol Hill. The group included director of national intelligence, Dan Coats, who said North Korea is unlikely to abandon its nuclear weapons program. It's leaders ultimately view nuclear weapons as critical to regime survival. Our assessment is bolstered by our observations of some activity that is inconsistent with full denuclearization. That is contrary to what President Trump has said about North Korea and the threat it poses in the past Trump posted to Twitter that the North Korea relationship is quote, the best it has ever been John cypher spent twenty eight years in the national clandestine service and joins us. In our studios this morning. Thanks for being here. John, thanks. My pleasure. We have gotten somewhat accustomed to the president lambasting members of his own team. But from your vantage point, what are the consequences when he so directly and publicly contradicts an insult his top intelligence officer. Well, there's certainly a problem if you insult your own leaders because they are responsible to their workforce, and they have to. I mean in the intelligence community is a bright line. You can't skew intelligence you have to provide to the power, and therefore they're doing their jobs, and the people that work for them expect them to do that. So that if if the president challenges them on that over and over it, it makes it harder for them to do their jobs. It also I imagine doesn't send a great message to our friends allies or otherwise globally when you see the president. So so publicly diverging from the facts on the ground or the president's is to be diverging also from. Republican congressman and many of the policies that are put out by his own administration and the intelligence that our leaders provide is often informed by our allies fighting their intelligence to us too. So they're doing their best job to to lay it out clearly for people if the president disagrees, that's certainly fine. There is a bright line between policy in intelligence and intelligence professionals understand that the the Intel if officials directly contradicted the president on North Korea. As we noted also about the threat from ISIS. President Trump has said that threat has been contained which is not the consensus of the intelligence community. Does that affect practically how the United States deals with the terrorism threat or will the Intel chiefs just work around him? Well, the Intel community will continue to do their job will continue to provide intelligence. That's what they do for many years if policymakers choose to do things different says fine intelligence, just but one input into the policy making process. However, when you attack the intelligence process it really puts pressure on those on those chiefs with their workforce. Do you get the sense that these leaders are feeling freer to counter the president's false claims about national security issues and threats I seem to remember, Dan Coats, and a previous hearing walking line more carefully than he did just the other day. I don't know if they're freer. I think they're they're doing their jobs. They really don't have much of a choice the culture in the community is is professionals mixed it provide intelligence to policymakers even if it's inconvenient. And so they don't have much of a choice if they don't do that they really are hurting themselves with their workforce's their legacy. Inside. So I think they're just doing what they have to do. How are the rank and file in these agencies dealing with us? Do they just block out the noise or does it start to chip away? At morale over time. It's got a chip away. And it makes you worry about your boss's bosses are being attacked. But frankly, these institutions are pretty resilient the people they like their jobs. They take it seriously. They will continue to provide intelligence unvarnished intelligence, but nonetheless, you know, the president is sending a signal around the world that that he has his own views of things and that he doesn't really is not comfortable taking advice is America less safe because the commander in chief disagrees with the director of the CIA. No, not necessarily. I mean, the the issue here is the president can think what he wants. But the adversaries get a say, right. The biggest problem really is not the disagreement here, but it's the president's unwillingness to explain his policy. He's attacking people, but he's not dealing with the substance here if he truly believes differently he should make it really clear why he believes the things he believes he just doesn't chooses not to do that for some reason John cipher for remember of the national clandestine service. "Wall gracie mansion has a wall around the first thing he did think about this when he moved into gracie mansion that wall has protected one hundred mayors but he had the wall raised that he wasn't even a good enough wall he wanted a higher wall and now he's going to speak out against putting the wall on the border unbelievable hey one thing i'll give them credit for we have a new york city transportation director james andy byford yes and for six months he's been in the job and the mayor never met with them in six months this guy in charge of all transportation in new york crucial job i mean it's nothing more important to people that need to get around get to work he didn't meet with them for six months and he got a lot of bad publicity over that so he met with them was it yesterday yes so i met by a couple of weeks ago brilliant guy yeah he's trying to get the job done a brilliant guy what a background he was director of all transportation in toronto than london he's been all around the world done great things the mayor finally meets with him he's a british guy with a british accent but yeah asked him about that i said you know what i hear you're the head of the transit system and you go meet somebody and he's like a fancy british guy don't aren't they stunned and he admitted they are then they've never heard any talk like that so congestion pricing he says it's coming you're not gonna stop it really well that's what the government wants right the mayor wants the millionaire's tax yeah now this congestion pricing they put these bars up over the roads don't even see him it's like now when you go over the henry hudson or the throngs nick you don't see any sign of a toll or anything but it's there it's a little thin bar above the road and auto medically charges you so once they get the congestion pricing it's a dollar whatever it is whatever it doesn't matter five dollars twelve dollars it can get fifty dollars you won't even know because it's you don't see it but they asked him about this he said the one thing they learned in london when it starts to get too high people stop driving in and start taking the train he said so when they get to high there's a point of no return then they back it off because they've actually lose revenue let me ask you take the trains you think is a good idea that we put thousands of more people on the train with you know.

"And he announced it publicly at a press conference what it was in such a public way to you know there were restraining orders that were issued by the court regarding so her kids were young enough that they were really unfortunately collateral damage you know the judge had the issue orders in that case where where she wasn't allowed to be in gracie mansion judah but the question i'm interested to see the answer to is is he going to get better at this obviously hasn't gotten better at marriage she's on marriage number three in its now divorcing but has he gotten better at getting divorced because maybe he hopefully learned from divorced number two which was public and expensive and really embarrassing all involve maybe he learned some less than any divorces better and more privately this time or maybe he's learned absolutely nothing and it's just going to be another knock down drag say and of course it makes good press james sexton with the former mayor it won't really affect his career is vence appeal at this point but let me ask you you do this thousands of cases are there issues beside the you know money sex whatever that you hear time and time again and if there are can they be predicted why don't people go for premarriage counseling it's it's a great question and and you know that's really what i try to talk about in the book the book is really about what are you know the little things that people can do who are in relationships ideally at the start of relationships even or again you're not in my office what can you do to keep out of my office so you know i think that people get divorced the same way that they go bankrupt very slowly and then all at once you know these little things these little raindrops build up to the flood and no single raindrop is responsible for the flood but those that flood is made up of those raindrops so people will come in and say i'm getting divorced because my husband's sleeping with his secretary and that's an excellent reason to get divorced but he's sleeping with his secretary because there are problems in the marriage and again whose fault those are is a different.
