Speaker Newt Gingrich Pinpoints the Watershed Moment in Glenn Youngkin's Campaign

"Speaking English as a resident of Virginia, I am, of course, buoyed. I am very excited by the recent victory of Glenn young of his lieutenant governor of his attorney general. What is, can we read a broader significance into this for next year and for 2024 or is it rather sui generous as a resident of the Commonwealth, I look at what happened here. And I see a businessman not unlike president Trump with no political background. He brought a business like attitude to the campaign, talked about getting Virginia back to work. But in the last few weeks, because of those mothers you mentioned at the school boards, he very adroitly pivoted to this culture war issue of fighting critical race theory and vowed to ban it on his first day in office. Is that a model or should Virginia be dealt with this as something unique? No, I think I watched lens campaign closely and talked frequently with his campaign manager. And I believe that the turning point of the campaign actually was when he went to a loudon county rally of a thousand people who were upset about the schools, and then in the debate when former governor Terry mcauliffe said that there was no place for parents in schools, and that was electrifying and as you pointed out Glen is a businessman and built a good campaign team and they actually had something up on the air. By the next morning. And just throw home for everybody in Virginia, the term of thought that there was no place for parents and schools. And that, I think became the signal moment that began to change everything. No, young can also did a very adroit job of having Trump's help in rural and southern Virginia where he's extraordinarily popular without having Trump campaign in Arlington and fairfax county where he's unpopular. And so junkin was able to pick up all the support in the suburban counties from people who were upset about the schools while picking up all the support in rural and small town Virginia from everybody who was pro

"One of the most closely watched elections today is the race for Virginia governor considered a bellwether ahead of next year's midterm elections former governor Terry McAuliffe remains optimistic he'll win a second term we're gonna take the jeans and I accept the well known Democrat who ran the state from twenty fourteen to twenty eighteen has watched an early lead dwindle to a statistical dead heat with Republican businessman Glenn young can tons of momentum I mean I'm not kidding the momentum in this race is something else early on young can have embraced Donald trump's policies but now has sought some distance political analyst Dr Larry Sabato says the tightness of this race sends a signal to national Democrats Republicans will take heart in that end will project this forward rightly or wrongly to November twenty twenty two when a third of the Senate the whole house of representatives and thirty six governorships on the ballot president Biden won the state of Virginia by ten percentage points just last year I'm Jackie Quinn

Terry McAuliffe Struggles to Shore up Democrat Base

"We've got a couple of minutes here to talk about what's going on in the gubernatorial race in Virginia, where Glen youngkin is going up against former governor Terry mcauliffe and, you know, this is an interesting race. It's remained close. I intending to think I'm a little optimistic about this, but of course, Virginia is a fairly blue state these days. Cam you're a virginian. What's going on there? It does young can have a chance here. Yes, I think you can absolutely have this chance. I think the Democrats are very, very concerned. As you say, Virginia has been trending blue, but this is about as optimal a scenario for Republicans as you can find. Democrats have nominated. I think a pretty unpopular guy and certainly a very uninspiring candidate who is not being helped by Joe Biden is dragging him down. Like all of even said that by design popular in Virginia and yet Biden is going to be coming to campaign with Terry mccoll between now and election day. But, you know, Miguel has also bringing in Barack Obama. He's bringing in Stacey Abrams to campaign for him Ed, which tells me that was less than three weeks now before election day. McCollum is still worried about shoring up his base, he's not even hoping right now to try to attract those moderate or independent voters. He's still trying to get black Democrats in Virginia to show up and vote for him because there's a third party candidate on the ballot for instance blanding. Who is running as deliberation party candidates is the first black female to be on the ballot for governor in Virginia. She is very strongly connected to the social justice movement. She's running to the call of left. And I think the mcauliffe is absolutely terrified that she's been able to peel away three four maybe even 5% of the vote both that would have gone to him. And that may be enough, along with what I think has been a pretty good campaign run by when young that might be enough to put junk in an office.

Democrats win control of House and Senate in Virginia

"It was an election night for Democrats to remember in Virginia as they picked up at least two Senate and five house seats to gain control of both the house and Senate for the first time in a quarter century among the key races lost by Republicans the last GOP house seat in northern Virginia formerly held by Kim Hugo and the Senate seat vacated by retiring Republican Dick black Democrat John bell B. Gary Hagens to win that race high voter turnout in a late infusion of out of state cash helped push Democrats over the top but former governor Terry McAuliffe was quick to put the G. O. "governor terry mcauliffe" Discussed on CATS Roundtable

"Good Morning America. This is the cats roundtable Sunday morning. It's a beautiful day in America today with us today is a good friend. Governor Terry McAuliffe. He was Democratic National Committee chairman. He was best friends, and still is with President, Bill Clinton, and let's see what's on Terry's, our horizon now. Good morning, governor. How are you this morning? How you doing? I'm doing good, sunshine ING and we're all still here, and that's the important thing there was a rumor at one point that you wanted to run for president of the United States and follow our friend, Bill Clinton. Now, I hear there's another rumor that you want to run for re election for governor in Virginia which one is true walls or your. Present and was very interested. I mean you have terrific successor in Virginia, and I became governor, I inherited a very large, I've left the largest in history, the state hundreds of thousands of new jobs record amount of capital investment statements Satan's place. I thought that was a very good message of a seven state. It was the only sunny state that when ruined twenty sixteen. We became a beacon number one St. America for cybersecurity data. Analytics jobs jobs jobs. That's what whatever they and I thought that was important, but we got about a month and a half ago. I looked at the field. There were twenty plus states in Joe Biden is an old friend of mine. I think he and I were in similar ace and he was to run. But I also have a looking for genius. John, we is, you know, this year we have our house and Senate elections. For the first time in twenty six years. The Democrats when when you see each chamber, we can win both chambers. Both the state Senate in the state house. And so, after all the work that going into my four years, governorship, I thought I probably could make the biggest impact so I have been campaigning ever. Since knows what does is in the last sixteen. I've done over forty months. I've got about food this month slime leaning in Virginia twenty nineteen because we're ninety down. On that issue would be in the chair and twenty twenty one districting. So they were Jimmy's feature of metric, and is going to be terminus offer, so and academia and up traveling twenty five states into asked you that at the in. It's the right thing, and we'll see the twenty twenty one dollars. That's the next election is and about twenty nineteen doing everything. I possibly tainted. So I think in, you know, I hope some presidential candidates also with right. You gotta think they're committee. Biggest impact Sam probably should be running to the United States Senate. We've got a very big twenty three people it does need to get narrowed down. You've gotta be Trump got to be focused in order to do that. Now, can you describe the nationalist seen how you see, I listen, I feel very confident beat Trump in at twenty twenty I remind you John, that in two thousand sixteen we lost three states. Wisconsin. In Pennsylvania, in Michigan. I combined of seventy seven thousand bucks. People woke up the day after the election in ninety two million people John did not go to me, twenty sixty actually decided to stay home. They like to go they just decided not to use it. They woke up that next day and J his shock anger and said, I never miss a vote again. The first of actions after sixteen were in Virginia twenty seventeen and we picked up the most house seats, one hundred thirty years, we did the house last year, United States Congress through the record votre forty million voters say that. So my point is I'm gonna get all ninety two million. Oh it we get ten percent. That's nine million there. So I am very confident, and I do think toward vote Carolina, possibly Georgia the, any saints that we can put a basket that we didn't have the four and we've got a great really pointing gotta be Trump. I think right now is he'll you've got Joe bye. Niners lead almost all the states, and then you've got Bernie, in Elizabeth and probably p judge writing there in that mix and they're still to talk to your say. Now if you got the most, you have a debate coming up. I don't know if the debates John gonna make much difference you're going to get ten people. I think you're gonna have, you know, maybe seven eight minutes, each by the time you get done questions and commissions, whatever it's you can really make yourself how you really stick out. You know, you're not gonna streaked across the stage. To be within to do it's going to be any hurry, after short amount of time to be able to really change of, of what's going on in the timers of the twenty candidates was, I think they're disqualified for them from from being in the debates. Is there any of them that she think is tough enough? Like, like Trump was which the seventeen candidates had he he scored sixty. Knockout punches is there any Democrats that are strong enough to score knockout punches question? John, I didn't see any ever posted after that Trump and Charlie real to that phase of the jet. Agassi any of that happened. I'm gonna pay side of most of the energy's gonna be this contract, which is gonna make it, you know, because most in and most of the POWs issue. I don't know the difference and what they look at. He's been personally to be truck during nothing that he's a millionaire that is as more than supposedly they meant can be Trump right now. That's true. And so- Joe Biden has known the debates and everybody's been restroom, and you stand there and he's so he can live rusher because, you know, they'll never Trump you gotta have a. Number body, probably double. I, I would love your John. If you hit me against Trump, you could sell tickets to that they, I, I was looking forward to seeing that movie. Yeah. Remember you, I should question? If, if, if Joe Biden faded out, for some reason, you're the only other moderate guy that my qualify. Would you consider jumping in? Joe's seem to be in the states and zapping alcohol and being in Harry's adventure very firm down in South Carolina. The great operations in the Batta. He's a front as soon as they can down. And that's not gonna happen for, I don't anything happening there. I've made decision. I'm all about Jimmy over ten years gonna make history. That shooting in the house and Senate. And in a message of. So you know I'm having United season. You know, John very long time Basie done on fired up. I'm pumped up for, you know, we're gonna Vinson they news. I mean, you know, I love even governing if it's babies job, John in the there's another job, we get out of that every day in the executive already actually help people, you know, as governor restraint, though, phone writes, maybe governor me history, United States of America. It was the right thing to do to hundred six thousand people. I gave him the right to vote back, you know, governors education in between them up there track is John talking about the socialist portion of Democratic Party and the anti semitic portion of the Democratic Party. It seems like the moderates don't have the courage to stand up against them now guy like you. I know you retire, you have the courage this James when I was in considerable, I try. Me, and I was unspoiled might be semi issues Medicare for all it's not gonna happen in this country when American slang out or lease a private insurance action, you know, it drops dramatically in the days now the goal should be. And this is what bothers me party. Now we're talking about, you know Medicare for all he's not really be when people understand it. And the talking about full coverage now we've got ninety to ninety four percents Americans cover the debate on the all the other, folks. And the, the thing that people care about John prescription drug costs, the care of his out of networks as expensively hospital and all of a sudden Stevie, Alex. He's not you know the network. You get home and you gotta build for twenty five hundred bucks. Then he's is bothering remember other today, so instead of talking about how in reducing prescription drug costs and things any of the sixty billion these spin out pharmacy to police to advertise deduct that Nancy what we ought to be talking. You know, everybody's over here. I, I think you gotta come back and talk about things actually bad or the voters. Listen as governor, I leave, and I seen energy and energy betterment. You know, we're not gonna overnight, you know, to have to switch on then facet fuse is not going to happen. So I wanted to bake to be about, you know, pragmatic, practice fusion's, in affect people every day when this year's on your now, you know, it makes you got all the education they can get in their car, and not have to spend two hours your of the aim in the afternoon, they want prices. I mean this is not rocket science. What this, you know, when I ran for governor about jobs, jobs jobs and because I hear a big that has governed by inheriting emetic economy Virginia than hit on SuperStation and built, the most vibrant economy history state in. That's what people actually do about it demand for democrat or Republican radio that I got out of bed, creed, and economic activity, if it keeps could play hard, you know, get a high paying job, and, you know, why does he concluded Amazon jam Amazon, I got neces- come to junior. "For those of you listening on the podcast. That was I'm so where voter says share Graham so worried about Pac money money shared bounces. Yeah. I mean, you got this idiot sheltering, maybe he's an idiot. I mean, he's a total idiot. So which is always a packed room for the people. And I'm not sure that share knew that his voice was being picked up regardless. I concur with the sentiment of the Senator from Ohio. I have a huge problem with with idiot. You might disagree with what I I don't disagree with these doing. I don't know the man enough to call him idiot. Okay. All into paint five bucks for a Cup of coffee. This is Jean. I I think that he doesn't even he doesn't even know what he's running for president United States other than the fact, and this is going to be a lot of people anybody thinks they could be president United States. Now that Donald Trump was president and that slogan should be Howard show because anybody can do it. This is the to to Hillary Clinton when she ran for when she was running twenty fifteen and talk about branding. And how you build your brand. And how you roll that out? And you would think the guy from Starbucks should know thing or two about that he has fallen none of his own advice in the first week. So that is the problem that I have is he's so arrogant and getting out there and saying you can't do this. And you can't do that not even following varied. Vice he wants gave presidential. "They're both co-sponsors of the Bernie Sanders Medicare for all let's discuss Akari fifty six percent of Americans favor Medicare for all. According to new Kaiser poll, but when you ask would you favor it if it eliminates private insurance companies as the Bernie Sanders Bill essentially does it drops to thirty seven percent. I think what you're going to see is throughout this process Democrats in their plans, and their ideas, and all of these proposals are going to be fleshed out and people are going to get to the root of it. But when what you saw this past week was you saw a slight difference of opinion because I think that Medicare for all is the standard in the Democratic Party now, but you have different ways in different candidates who want to get there. So I still favor, for example, making sure that we still have a healthy providence insurance industry in this country. But I do believe that we need to move towards a Medicare for all inlet let private insurance fill in those gaps. And I think that you have Kamla hairs. And Cory Booker who have sponsored bills throughout the whole plethora or the whole John or of that making sure that we get just an and if we just dropped the age limit for Medicare five years, I think we at least cover more people, and we can at least start to have those discussions. I want you to take a listen to the White House's comments this week about Cory Booker. They seem to have some had had some rather pointed criticism. Senator Cory Booker announced today that he's also running. There are a lot of Democrats on the good noches. No chance I say why because I know him. I don't think it is chance. I think quite book Booker often sounds like a hallmark card and not necessarily a person who's there to tell you everything he's accomplished in the United States Senate and his mayor of Newark, what's your take totally agree with the president. He has no chance. There's far more formidable candidates democratic this is a guy I mean watches performance during the cavenaugh hearing completely discredited himself. He has flip flopped on major issues over the years. He tends to say what the audience wants to hear. That's not what people are looking for. I don't think in either political party. These Democrats have smart strong candidates. I think Kamala Harris, comma, Harris. Didn't say Camille was good. And I also think she led the way in some ways on the north issue. I thought her cheap she needed to speak, and she did it. So she seems to be strong to meet Beto. I think is still lurking out there. Cory Booker is is is an interesting person. But he's not going to be the next. Do you think? Well, I thought the president's statement was less racist than other comments. He's made about black candidates kudos so kudos. That's a plus perhaps a nod to black history month frac like he didn't say he didn't say they were ignorant or not educated. What have you usually tends to do? I think Corey is someone if you've ever seen him on the campaign trail, he is very inspiring. And I think as with all these candidates that is why we have a primary process, right? Where you get to see how do they do can they flush out their ideas about health care about? How do we get to? If it's Medicare for all. Or if it is do you maintain you know, some firm of private insurance? How do we get there? And I think that what's going to be pas. Tive is that conversation. I actually think that Cory booker's problems. It's going to be within the Democratic Party. And it's going to relate to his job as mayor of Newark, I think he was terrific mayor of Newark, he supported choice for public school children in Newark. And he's going to have trouble with the teachers union, and it is very difficult to get the nomination. We've got the teachers unions on the other side Democrats were throwing a curveball this week with the possible entry at least a a testing for independent candidate Howard Schultz, the former CEO of Starbucks Senator Sherrod Brown of Ohio is contemplating running for president. He hasn't denounced. But he does have some thoughts on Howard Schultz. Let's roll tape..

"But I want to touch on a comment you made in the phrase human dignity because this was the second moment where Ralph Northam this week failed to respect human dignity. The first moment, of course, was when he made his absolutely ghoulish horrific statements about abortion. This was his second PR debacle this week. Previous to this black face KKK wrote moonwalking press conference, he was on a radio show talk, and he's a pediatrician, and we ran the clip hall about talking don't interrupt me talking about us and talking about a boarding children at the moment of birth. And then even after they had been the liver. I agree with you because human dignity matters. And we ought to respect every human life of every race, especially these poor babies who are laying into livery. The rooms when you have governors of states that think we should have discussion about murdering them down. Stop stop after what you're saying rage. A ghoulish lie. I'm on the board of narrow Porto's America. That is a lie that the right wing has released radio. Listen to radio. I don't agree with what he said in the way, he said it, but what we're talking about is making sure that in those instances, it is a woman and a doctor not anyone at this table or anyone in congress making the decision that is not the same thing as what we were talking about. When we talking about is what we started talking about racism in this country. "When when I see images like this, it hearkens on the fact that we have a serious problem with race in this country. But Gordon a north as a democrat doesn't even understand his own actions. And so it's very traumatizing when we sit here and critique it because I'm like Jake and everyone else I'm like can people just not be racist? Right. I mean, can that be the bar and Democrats who wanna he and Hough I have no time for you. I'm glad that most people came to the trough early because we need to set a standard that racism will not be tolerated in our party in our political discourse right now, especially in two thousand and the last thing I'll tell you Jake because this is equally important we talk about systemic racism all the time. And the fact that you have doctors who dress up in black face who wear take care gone. There were at least one other image and that same year book of a different person that goes to question you had these doctors. How do we think that they are caring for African Americans in their care when they do not even look as African Americans and give them the benefit of their humanity. This is why we have systemic racism in this country. This is racism is permitted. Permissive in our systems. And this is why we had disparities in healthcare amongst other things. And so this is a much larger issue than just governor north of. And I'm glad you asked the question. I want to read you a tweet from President Trump because it seemed like everybody took to Twitter to dunk on governor north them even people with their own questionable statements and behavior when it comes to race, President Trump said democrat, governor Ralph north of Virginia stated, I believe that I'm not either the people Netflix show. This was twenty four hours after apologizing for appearing in the picture unforgivable, obviously the president's history with African Americans goes back to being sued by the Nixon Justice department for discriminating against African Americans when it comes when it came to people living in his apartments. Well, absolutely, right. I to say something about the context one of the advantages of being as old as I am. It was before Akari was even born to I was head of the US commission on civil rights in one thousand nine hundred four when this occurred race was very much in the public conversation. Doug wilder was running for Lieutenant governor. But. I was on the front page as was the rest of the civil rights commission talking about race talking about affirmative action. So this isn't like it happened in one thousand nine thirty four this is recent history. And the fact that you know, somebody's said to me we've got a photo Linda of you in black face. I would know it couldn't possibly be true. Because I would never do such a thing any more than I would do Heil Hitler. And so the fact that he couldn't immediately. No, he clearly hung around with people where that was acceptable was acceptable. He clearly did it at least once himself. And I think that it it just speaks of of a kind of racism that. Unfortunately, still exists Scott. What do you say to Democrats who say, hey, you know, what Republicans sit this one out? You still got Steve king who still in the house of representatives. You have a president who referred to African nations as as HIV whole countries. You know, we don't need to hear from you on that. Well, I think I agree with the car. I think there are people all over this country of varying political stripes. That's still have race problems. They don't get it. They don't understand. How hurtful things are. They don't understand the policing issues. We have in this country. They just don't understand they speak out of ignorance frequently..

"Participate in dance contest in San Antonio in which dark and my face is part of a Michael Jackson costume is. Because my memory of that episode is so vivid that I truly do not believe I am into picture in my yearbook. Welcome back to state of the union. I'm Jake tapper that was the democratic governor Virginia Ralph Northam saying that a racist photo from his medical skier books radical school yearbook was not him. And the reason he knows that is because he clearly remembers a different time he was in black face. But then again, take a look at what he said in a statement on Friday night, quote earlier today at website published a photograph of me from my nineteen Eighty-four medical school yearbook in a costume that is clearly racist and offensive. I am deeply sorry for the decision. I made to appear as I did in this photo and for the hurt that decision caused then. And now, let's discuss Karen Finney. I've never before heard and explanation from a politician. That's not me in that black face photo. And the reason I know that is because I remember another black face it. The other one was fine. This one would be bad. Right. It's completely uncritical. I the only person who does not know that it's over is governor north them. I mean, setting aside the substance because he's been. A lot of conversation. We all know. It's despicable disgusting at twenty five years of age. You should know that particularly right before you're about to take an oath to do no harm as a doctor probably shouldn't be appearing in those kinds of images. But it is also with me communications one. Oh, one when you run for office. A lot of people were making fun of the opposing sides oppo research team. I would say his own research team really screwed up because you do yourself research to know what's out there. And then be prepared for what you're going to say when it comes up. So the fact and this the way they handled it they kept creating more questions than he was answering as it went on. And now, you don't know what to believe it's hard to have that he has to think that he has any credibility. And I think as you were discussing earlier with former governor Terry like to call them, you know, who's gonna wanna work with him. Now, he has no credibility. How is he gonna go and say talk about removing confederate monuments? How is he going to be the guy that people are going to see? A leader on some of these critical issues and in a year and the week where Jesse small it was viciously beaten. And we know it was a hate crime in the year where the most diverse candidates in the most ever selectric. It's no it can't do it because we have you on here because your political expert, and and the progressive voice, but I want to ask you to explain to to to blacks, Blaine what what emotions Why do do you give? you give political answer? What does it mean as an African American to see that image because I think a lot of the thing which ugly, but like, but it might mean something emotional. Yeah. It does. And I'm glad you asked the question because I we have to say that Democrats and Republicans alike have problems with rates in this country. And we can say that Republicans have more of an issue with that doesn't matter racism is in the fabric of the United States of America. And when you see those images, you see the KKK, and we all know that the KKK just brutalized lynched rape pillage mini-african Americans, not just throughout the south but throughout the country, and I think that many times white people do not understand what black face means when you know, when you when you have your son, and he's going out in black face for costume or your son goes to prep school or one of these elite day schools, and they they dress up in black face. Basically what it means is that you're calling me nigger. The reason I say that is because black face goes back to the mid nineteenth century where people were dressing up in Mitchell show, showing African Americans to be lazy to be ignorant to be hyper sexual end to be all out disrespectful to our culture. And so..

"We got to have a comprehensive approach to this. I've believed that we got a chance this. We to move things will we we don't know the president could be right. We could be wasting our time on the other hand we could come up to solution. But as long Jake as long as the speaker and the president are way at odds, the chances of us reaching agreement or are slim, but it could happen as a matter of fact later this week coming up, we've asked the professionals, the people who do the work that know something about the border a know what they need. Do. They need a wall. Need to fence, they need more technology. Do they need it? All we're going to them up before the appropriation. Conference committee, and we're going to find out what they won't. I think it's not what I need a what the speaker needs or even the president needs. It's what we need to secure our borders. And we get this information from experts. It couldn't move off the dime. What if they say that they are fine with steel slats barriers, but they don't need a concrete wall. And then that's something that I it sounds like the conference committee could agree to even Nancy Pelosi could agree through the speaker of the house, but President Trump really just matters. Whether or not he finds it acceptable. If you demands a concrete wall or border, but you're saying it will defer to the customs and border patrol people. Well, I think is what you call it. The president calls it a wall. Sometimes we call it offense sometimes a barrier, but to president I think has already spoken out and said, he's not talking about a concrete wall, fifteen hundred miles and so forth. I think he's been talking about steel barriers and slap slats and stuff like that. But I think we've got to listen to the experts we got to listen to the people who do it every day that know what the challenge is. Because we do Jake. We do have problems with our borders. We have not secured our borders the presence, absolutely right there. It's a question. How do we get all the politics and to the substance if we can do that? We'll get the job done. That's what I'm working to do to go to. Yes. The president is signaling that he's likely to declare a national emergency to fund the border wall. That would then go to the house and Senate to affirm or to or to vote against do you think there are enough votes in the Senate to? To pass to approve of president's Trump's national emergency declaration or are enough Republicans concerned about such a thing whether it's because of the precedent or whether because it takes away power from the legislative branch. Well, we'll have to see what would happen. The president has specifically said he's going to invoke emergency powers. But he he's under the constitution. He's probably got some rights. They're also under the statute that gives speak. So -mergency powers. What we'd like to do is do it in preparation process? We've shown we could do it. If people leave us alone, if we were tasked Senator Lahey my counterpart in the Senate congresswoman Lowey and also Grainger if the four of us could get together task by our respective caucuses. We'll get this done before Wednesday night. But if it can't find a deal, if you can't find a deal that he would sign euro, okay. With him declaring a national emergency. Well, that's up to him. You know, he does have power, and he has obligations on the constitution to protect the country, which is to protect the borders that would probably play out in court some way, but the preferable way is through the appropriation process, which we've already done, and I'll say it again, three fourths of the budget. Let us finish the rest. I want to ask you a question. You used to be the chairman of the Senate select committee on intelligence, the nation's top intelligence officials testified before congress this weekend and they contradicted the president on several of the priorities. They contradicted him on whether they think North Korea will denuclearize on whether Iran is complying with the nuclear deal as of right now, whether ISIS has been completely defeated the president got mad. He lashed out on Twitter. He called the intelligence chiefs extremely passive and naive..

"OT you. To state of the union. I'm Jake tapper with just twelve days left to make deal. President Trump says negotiations on Capitol Hill to avoid another government shutdown or a waste of time. The president is threatening to build his border wall with or without a deal by declaring a national emergency possibly. He will make this announcement during this Tuesday state of the union address. Joining me now is one of the lawmakers. Trying to zeal Senate appropriations committee chairman Richard Shelby. Republican from Alabama. Senator good to see you always good to have you on your committee has just twelve days left to strike a compromise deal on border security to avoid another government shutdown. President Trump said this week those negotiations that you're helping to lead or quote, a waste of time. The comments like that hurt your efforts to find a compromise. Willie could hurt but he could also help. Because a lot of us are going to do everything we can to try to make this work to get to. Yes. To avoid another shutdown to show that we can do the job like we did three fourths of the funding already. There seemed to be an obvious area of compromise here on fencing speaker Pelosi indicated on Thursday, she won't pay for a wall, but she's open to enhanced fencing or Normandy fencing in some areas. President Trump said during the shutdown that he was open to fencing barriers steel slats. But then this week he kind of did a turnaround. And he tweeted, quote, let's just call them walls from now on and stop playing political games. It seems as though the president has just kind of put up a wall in the way of finding common ground here. Am I wrong? I think that the president is is dead set on keeping his campaign promise, I support border security a wall offense a barrier. Whatever it takes also support enhanced procedures technical technology and more manpower..

"Putting more water fountains more parking spaces all to shut all of our clinic stone, I'm very very proud that I replaced the board of health and working with Ralph. We got rid of all of those horrible regulations to shut our Planned Parenthood clinics down. So you know, that's the battle that we've been having in Virginia where we come from is. Life for the mother in the last trimester. But I do not support that legislation nor does Ralph. And I just think you know, he was speaking as a doctor, and what he was trying to say, I'll be honest who was in Airfoil. And that's not who he is governor, obviously, we asked you to come on the show to talk about national issues having to do with Medicare for all at cetera. And I hope you'll come back under different circumstances. But before you go last question, you said a month ago that the odds of you running for president in two thousand twenty where about fifty fifty what's the update are they still fifty fifty are you planning on running? So I've said I'd make a decision by March thirty first I have been talking to other candidates, and I wanna see what the positions are out there. I'm going through the process, I have outreached over four hundred people I've talked to individuals out there. And listen, we headed very successful run. As governor Virginia bringing people together building a new economy. I've said we need a democrat running for president that has practical actual can actually get things done and who can show results. So, you know, we've got about six seven weeks to finish making my decision, and I'm talking to a lot of people. And if I do promise you Jake, you'll be the first to know. Oh, okay. I'm sorry. I will be the first to know. But still about fifty fifty you think or maybe sixty forty in favor. What do you think? Yeah. I I like to do it. I think we had a great track record in Virginia. Great success that we had very results record, you know, economic investment and all the things that we're able to do very progressive agenda. But also, very economic focus. We built a new economy. That's what America need. They want a president. Who is compassionate who has empathy and who tells the truth of anyone who dealt with me in the Commonwealth of Judea. I am very authentic. I will always tell you. Whether you liked to hear it or not. And I lead in to get things done that we can actually get done. I have very aspirational goals. But I also temper that that what is reality. And that's why I say, you know, I had a very Republican legislature. I got over seventy percent of my governor administration. Bills passed I worked together, we're a different state today than we were five years ago were open welcoming verse, and that's what the country needs. All right. Governor mccall. Thanks so much. "And it was hard. I called Ralph on Friday night. It was one of the hardest things I had to do was mangled Tanna governor we were closely together, we did so many great things working together for the counter, wealth and Virginia. But once they have picture where the black face and the clansman came out. There is no way you can continue to be the governor of the Commonwealth Virginia. We have had a horrible and soared past as it relates to race relations. We worked very hard Ralph now over the last five years and move the state forward if. You remember nineteen to state Senator said that I'm putting a felon disenfranchisement and our constitution quote to eliminate the Durkee from being a political factor in Virginia. I was proud to one hundred fourteen years later, give those films or writes back, but we've worked hard in Virginia. So this is I gotta tell you. It's heartbreaking. It has been more. The worst forty eight hours, but virginity to come out of this stronger. I can't sit here and pretend and be in the steps of those individuals who have been offended by those photos. Well, let me ask you a can't if it's not him in the photo. Which is what he's saying? Why do you still think he should resign? Well, I he said it was Friday night. And if it wasn't him in the photo, he should've said that on Friday. I have no idea what was going on in the governor's office on Friday. I just if you're not in instinctively, you know, if you put black paint on your face, you know, if you put a hood on. And so if it isn't you you come out with and mmediately and say, this is not me. So I can't understand what's going on. But I do know this. Ralph is a good moral decent man and may have made some mistakes in his past. We all have made mistakes. Ralph will do the right thing for the Commonwealth of Virginia. He will put Virginia. I and I think that will happen relatively soon. He's worked hard thanks to routes efforts. We got Medicaid expansion done. We have to move on. You cannot be the moral leader. I mean, we are now in crossover in Virginia where the legislation goes from the house and Senate back and forth. I can remember as governor. This is your busiest time right working with your legislators to pass bills kill bills. I mean, you've got to work as one unit to move your Commonwealth forward energy. He's just not going to have that ability to do it. The head of the black caucus yesterday said if he doesn't resign. They'll move to remove them themselves from the legislature. So we just need to put this behind us. We need to move forward. So and that's what we have to do. So when you say, you think is going to do the right thing. You mean? Is going to resign? You want him to resign? Do you agree with the head of the Blackhawks that he should be removed from office? If he does not resign. I know route very well. It will not come to that. And if Rao watching this today, I know how much he loves his Commonwealth of Regina and you've got to make the right decision. You've got to make the right moral decision. We have to bring people together we've had a horrible history in Virginia. He and I work together. And you know, he chaired the child cabinet than I formed with my wife to feed needy children. He's done so many great things it's not about Ralph anymore. This is about who we are Virginia's and how we move forward. So he's going to do the right thing. I know in his heart. He's going to do the right thing. Governor I want you to watch a clip from yesterday's press conference a question for governor north them after he admitted that he did wear black face. "Hello. I'm Jake tapper in Washington where the state of our union is shaking our heads, the Virginia governor democrat Ralph north is ignoring calls for his resignation by his fellow Democrats from the top to the bottom of his party demands. That only intensified after the governor bizarrely changed his explanation about that racist photo from his nineteen Eighty-four medical school yearbook page now north insists he's not in the photo, which depict someone in black face next to a person dressed in Ku Klux Klan roads. I finally had a chance to sit down and look at the photograph in detail. It is definitely not me. I can tell by looking at it. That was a total contradiction of what north I'm headed midday just hours before when he said he was quote deeply sorry for the decision.
