Three leading Fed officials have expressed support for the idea of skipping a rate hike in June. Fed Governor Philip Jefferson says that would give time to see more data. President Biden has nominated Jeff Zinn to be the Fed's vice chair, putting him close to the center of Fed policymaking. The comments come despite a slew of tough talk from other Fed policymakers and disappointing a inflation report last week, and those suggesting a pause also indicate hikes could resume later year. this The Fed has implemented ten straight hikes, pushing its benchmark interest rate to about 5 percent, the highest in 16 years. Utah's sixth term Republican Congressman Chris Stewart announced he'll be leaving Congress, giving up his seat due cut to to his wife's illness. This was a very contentious hearing. Very much so, yes, it was a very hot, hot seat for shows he chose the CEO of TikTok. Lawmakers really hitting him from two different sides here. One had to do with the content that TikTok hosts, right? The concerns over younger users potentially being exposed to harmful content. And then the other bucket of concern is, of course, that TikTok could potentially be used as a vector for espionage by the Chinese government and obviously that is raising a lot of eyebrows in Washington. That's kind of the biggest concern that I think most people have been familiar with is this idea that it's tracking data on Americans, whether they're just an average private citizen, or even a government employee, and the government has even banned TikTok from its devices. That's right. Yeah, by the end of this month, which is coming up, all government officials have to delete TikTok off of their work devices. This comes after a number of states made similar efforts and across the country a number of universities also banned TikTok on their Wi-Fi systems, but of course, you and I both know that college students will find a way to do things that you tell them not to do. So a lot of that was not particularly effective because they just turned their data off or joined a different Wi-Fi network or what have you. What are the specific concerns that Congress has? It falls into two main concerns when we're talking about the national security question. One is the potential data that TikTok could collect on American users, right every time that you sign up for an app, you hand over a little bit of information, could be a phone number, or a birthday, could be more serious stuff, like your contact list, or your GPS location. That, of course, is the thing that is at play when it comes to TikTok potentially collecting data on American users. TikTok is owned by a Chinese company. It's called ByteDance. The only things work is that if the Chinese government were to come knocking at ByteDance's door, they'd be on the hook to hand over whatever data that they requested. So that's the one bucket of concern. The other bucket of concern is almost the reverse. It's that the Chinese government could use a platform like TikTok, which is incredibly popular in the United States, 150 million monthly active users here to potentially leverage Chinese talking points, things that would be favorable to the Chinese government to Chinese culture, get those messages potentially in front of eyes that would have not otherwise seen them. "Utah is taking aim at social media access for teens. I'm Lisa dwyer. Utah has become the first state to sign into law, legislation that attempts to limit teenagers access to social media sites. Republican governor Spencer Cox signed a pair of measures that aim to limit when and where children can use social media and stop companies from learning kids to their sites, the law requires companies to give parents access to their children's accounts, puts a curfew on social media use from ten 30 p.m. to 6 30 a.m., as well as age verification for all Utah residents who want to use social media. Other states, such as Arkansas, Texas, Ohio, and Louisiana, a similar bills in the works. Utah's law will take effect March 2024 and court challenges are expected

Utah governor Spencer Cox says that he absolutely would sign the legislation and would be willing to face any legal challenges that come from it under terms of the bill Utah residents under 18 would only be able to open a social media account with a parent or guardian's permission. The governor says that he'd be working with social media companies over the next year to work out the details. On Wall Street, stocks finished the week lower, and that is your money now. How much lower will the Dow was down by 1.2% the NASDAQ down by three quarters of a percent, the S&P down by a little more than 1%. The idea that 18 months after the fact Donald Trump could simply announce well and retroactively declassifying or whatever I took home had the effect of declassifying them is absurd. Appearing on CBS's face the nation, the California Democrat said that it should be determined if there was effort to go through the process of declassification during Trump's presidency, according to a list of items seized in the search that was made public Friday, many of the documents were classified as secret, confidential or sensitive, Schiff also noted that the statutes, the former president, was being investigated for violating, didn't require the documents to be classified, but simply damaging to national security. In the wake of the raid Schiff and fellow representative Carolyn maloney have requested a briefing and damage assessment from the director of national intelligence. There was no plan when it came to the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. If the State Department probably didn't have the resources it needed to carry out an evacuation of this size, that's according to a new report by representative Michael McCall, appearing on CBS's face the nation, the Texas Republican explained that the failure to evacuate around 74,000 Afghan people who worked with the U.S. was one of the many sins of the abrupt withdrawal from the country last year. McCall said that not only was there a disconnect between intelligence on the ground and The White House, the State Department didn't have the capability to carry out an evacuation that large. China's economic recovery unexpectedly weakened in July, industrial output was up 3.8% that's year over year, however the estimate was looking for a gain last month of 4.3% at the same time retail sales increased just 2.7%. House Minority leader Kevin McCarthy says he's shocked But do we know what he's going to do with his picks to this committee? We don't. Uh, you know, probably people who have some experience with either what's called the House Administration Committee, the one that basically that's all the housekeeping up at the Capitol complex, or perhaps some of his more loyal lieutenants, someone like Jim Jordan of Ohio. Um, And then maybe someone with a law enforcement background he has a few members of the House Republican conference who are former sheriff's or police officers, and it wouldn't hurt given that there were so many Capitol police officers who were injured and have been quite critical of Congress's response to the attacks. So Republicans are not likely to really cooperate with US investigation. What's the likelihood that we're actually going to see some get to the bottom of the issue of the January six attack? Yeah, This may not be the best way to do it. I mean, between some other congressional investigations that are ongoing this committee and then frankly reporting and and the work of the Justice Department as a prosecutes these People who have been arrested and charged in, you know, with ties to the attack. Collectively, we may ultimately get to the bottom of this, but, um you know what? What exactly is the scope of this? Who exactly do they want to call to testify? What other information might they be looking for? That's not entirely clear. And you know, to what extent can you compel? House leaders like Kevin McCarthy, the minority leader, or former president Trump or his aides to come testify to what is just a select committee. That's unclear as well. And so while they investigate, there is also likely to be some legal challenge to this. And just, you know, continue to drag this out. But Pelosi and those that are involved with this say that it's going to continue well into next year. Well, things are only going to get more radioactive politically next year as we head into the midterms, and so Ultimately, what is the success of this? What is its focus? That remains a very big question. Is this on the agenda for Sunday's show? We are going to discuss this to some extent. But we're also focusing on the July 4th marker that the president laid down in terms of the pandemic. We'll talk to Jeff Science, the White House Covid response coordinator. And our in house expert, Dr Scott Gottlieb. Biden Pressured to Restore Boundaries of National Monuments in Utah
"Confirmed interior secretary Deb Holland is traveling to Utah shall meet with tribes and elected leaders, and the focus is on the future of the Bears, Ears and Grand Staircase Escalante national monuments. Former President Donald Trump dramatically slashed protections for these monuments. President Biden issued an executive order to review that move and his administration is under pressure to restore their boundaries. NPR's Kirk Siegler reports. Former congresswoman from New Mexico. And in the four Corners region, there's a lot of anticipation among tribes about her official visit to the Bears Ears National Monument. All federal prisons are now on lockdown until Wednesday's presidential inauguration. Officials called the move precautionary as pro trump extremists threatened a repeat of the kind of violence carried out at the U. S Capitol last week. All 50 state capitals are bracing for rioting this weekend. And NPR's Kirk Siegler reports. Utah's Republican governor has issued a state of emergency. The order authorizes Utah Governor Spencer Cox to shut down the state capital and surrounding complex if needed ahead of anticipated civil unrest. He's also signaled that the National Guard will be at the ready should've plan siege by right wing groups take place. So far, local members of the militant Boogaloo Boys who openly call for civil war, have requested a protest permit for Sunday. They're claiming it will be peaceful, though some other far right self described Patriot groups are reportedly telling their members to stay away. It's not clear whether counter protesters will also turn up Salt Lake City was the site of violent clashes during last year's black lives matter, Protests and curfews were enforced. The announcements come just days before Secretary of State designate Tony Blinken goes before Congress in a Senate confirmation hearing. If they're all confirmed, Blinken will have two deputies. One is Wendy Sherman, who negotiated the Iran nuclear deal during the Obama administration and has experience on North Korea as well. I'm Queen A Kim PG and E has agreed to a $190 million settlement, ending a two decades long legal battle over the cleanup at the Marina Small Craft Harbor in San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera announced a settlement yesterday. The city. First suit, PG and E in 2000 and one over pollution coming from the utilities, former coal gasification plants. Chemical compounds were discovered in the sub service, soils and sediments at the East Harbor, also known as Gas House Cove. The settlement's still needs to be reviewed by the city's Recreation and Park Commission. And get final approval from the Board of Supervisors. Staying in San Francisco Mayor London Breed says that when the covert 19 vaccine is more widely available, it plans to open three locations for mass distribution. Vaccine hubs will be located at the Mosconi Center in Soma City College Ocean campus on the edge of Ingleside and at the SF Produce market in Bayview all neighborhoods with high rates of covert 19 transmission. San Francisco could deliver as many as 10,000 doses per day. That is, if that many vaccines are available. Mayor Breed said the city is waiting to receive more doses. Locations are not the problem. The Atlanta Journal Constitution reporting that statewide nine out of 10 ICU beds are full and nearly half of those patients in intensive care. Last week I stood here and told you that we were going to significantly change the way we were administering vaccines the and increasing the speed at which we were doing that. I want to think all of our partners who stepped up and and took the call to heart last week today we have way have administered 133,202 doses. Now that that is really significant, because if you compared to where we were one week ago, we were at 68,030. So in the course of one week, we basically doubled the amount of vaccines that we had that we have administered over 60,000 vaccines administered in one week. So we Aziz, you know, we started letting teachers get the vaccine this week. Tens of thousands of teachers have already received. The vaccine were so great Full four for them and what they're doing to help us keep our our schools open we now we do recognize that we recognize that there were some changes or potential changes some advice given by the federal government yesterday, potentially recommending, starting to vaccinate those who are 65. We announced last week that on Monday those 70 years of age And up would be eligible for the vaccination. We're going to continue with those 70 years of age and older for for a couple reasons that I will explain shortly on DNO not open that up to 65 over yet, and the main reason for that is that we have so many people, 70 and all over who want the vaccine that we were adding 65 to the mix would would not change that There will be no availability because we don't have enough facts. Being assigned to the state of Utah right now to even cover those who are 70 years of age and over over the next several weeks that update from Utah's governor, Spencer Cox, earlier today in Salt Lake City. Meanwhile, the Bite administration is planning to release nearly every available dose of fighters and modern is Corona virus vaccine to the states. The advisory team has had a number of conversations with vaccine makers about the supply issue. Dr Celine Gounder is on the Biden Coronavirus panel. She's Also an infectious disease specialist at N. Y U's School of Medicine in During a conversation sponsored by Johns Hopkins University, she outlined what to expect once the new administration is sworn in next week. Think it's important understand that the fight in brand so to speak is to follow the science. And so I think, from vaccines to therapeutics to diagnostics to other public health recommendations, everything is going to be informed by the science. Now we've had a bit of a preview you could say of the Biden plan and the last week or so. The president elect has announced that the plan is to release nearly all Doses, and it's important to say nearly because what we're saying is, we're not going to be holding back second doses of vaccine We're going to be releasing nearly all with a small buffer left over because we want to accelerate the pace at which vaccination is going. This is really a decision about how to manage the supply. It's not a recommendation about the dose of vaccination or the schedule of vaccinations. So that is to say that the Fizer dose should Still be full dose. The second jobs at 21 days the majority of vaccine should be given full does with the second dose given a 28 days, So that's that's part of what you're going to see. The team has also realized that some of the guidance the CDC n A C i P while very well intentioned in terms of trying to prevent disease, death and do so equitably. I'm Lulu Garcia Navarro Thing sounds of the criminal activity at the Capitol, and the investigation is reaching well outside the returned because Washington D C is a federal district. NPR's law enforcement correspondent Martin Castillo spoke to the acting U. S attorney about the massive effort before him and Martin joins us now. Good morning. He thinks there's never been a federal investigation effort quite like this with the number of potential defendants. He thinks that maybe hundreds of people could end up getting charged when this is all said and done that beam or than during all the protests and disturbances over the whole summer in D. C. And he says. Also in this case, there's a much wider array of potential crimes. We're looking at everything from destruction of property, too. Theft the property to unauthorized, you know access to restricted areas to potential theft of national security information to Potential motor. What about the other kinds of crimes that people have described like sedition? Insurrection? Well, Sherman says it's not his place to get involved in the politics of words like sedition or coup. But he intends to follow the evidence, he says to whatever charges are justified, and when you ask him whether he'd also considered charges against, say, an elected official, say, the president for inciting a riot, perhaps again, he says he'll follow the evidence and if it's justified, he would One key aspect that they're still working on the O is whether these Attackers were coordinated or organized. It was sort of a carnival atmosphere beforehand.
