Yeah, absolutely. And with all due respect, Jeff, because there's not too many people around that know more about politics than you. I do have to respectfully disagree that Washington is really that far to the left. I know it often feels like it living in western Washington, but you know as well as anybody that Washington is often seen as a purple state, and again, because the legislature doesn't have that democratic supermajority like they do a down in the Golden State, it's a little closer to the center, but you make a very good point in that by putting lawmakers, Republican lawmakers, and themselves on record in terms of how they would vote this. They can then campaign on it and we are coming up on another election year before we know it. And in fact, governor inslee made that point as well. He says, you know, people who ran this past year, campaigned on the abortion issue. So there, I think the Democrats here are at the very least setting themselves up for the next campaign with the Dobbs decision in place and roe V wade out. So how far do you think this goes? Because I would tend to guess it would certainly clear out of committee, but as we said, I don't see a scenario where Washington state shifts enough to the right to get abortion rights eliminated in the state, I also don't see how the legislature shifts enough to the left to get the two third supermajority. Exactly. And, you know, the one could argue that you could make the case with Republican lawmakers who are ready to vote against it. Hey, why don't you put it to your constituents for a vote? Why don't you at least vote to get this on the ballot and hear what the people have to say today because it's been 30 years since the initiative that put it into law in the first place, but like you said, I don't see that happening there are enough Republicans in Olympia that are going to dig in their heels that it might get the floor votes, but I don't think it makes it to the governor's desk for a signature or to the next ballot. "Of the roe versus wade decision was yanked out from women because of one election cycle. So I think this is the right thing to do. And you know, the governor makes the ultimate point that it was that one election cycle that so quickly unraveled 50 years of precedence. That, of course, 2016, president Trump got three nominees to the U.S. Supreme Court through, and he only had one term. Each of the previous two presidents had two terms, they each only got two. Yeah, and, you know, a president is lucky to get one because it's a lifetime appointment. So it really was a matter of timing in terms of the Trump appointees. And you know, there are a lot of folks that argue because those three that he nominated to the high court, you know, got up there and said, well, we have no intention basically of overturning roe. And then it happened anyway. So, you know, I can see the governor's point in terms of, you know, if you want to protect abortion rights, a state constitutional amendment gives it a lot more teeth, but at the same time, you know, I can see the Republican side of it where they don't think that in 30 years of attempts to toss out the existing Washington state law that it's going to happen, and they don't think that this amendment is going to get the two thirds it needs to get to you on the ballot. "Como four teamed up with strategies three 60s nationally recognized public opinion research team to survey voters attitudes. Ron dots hour couple news political analyst and strategy 360 CEO joins us to talk about the results. All right, let's talk about how washingtonians feel about how the state is doing. So taking a look at the numbers, 48% think Washington is on the wrong track, while 40% say we're heading in the right direction. Any real surprise is there? Not really except, you know, generally speaking on both of these polls we just completed with coma was this sort of the voters are generally grumpy, I guess, is the best way to say it. And, you know, there's some trends that are kind of interesting. We're going to be talking about a little bit later, but you know it's not really a rousing endorsement about what's going on in the state of Washington today. You know, as far as what's going on wrong, let's take a look. People feel the top priority for a state elected leader should be crime and safety at 44%. That's followed by homelessness 37%. Yes. And then inflation cost of living 27%, the environment and the economy and jobs, their city at the bottom too. And to be clear, these are the top 5 that people chose from a longer list that also included COVID that also included infrastructure traffic, so do any of the results here stand out to you. Well, a little bit, you know, I think that everybody if you look at the Seattle, you'd see homelessness and crime would naturally come to the top of the list. It's a little interesting to me. It is just not about if not inflation. It's not the cost of living, but homelessness and crime are the top two issues statewide as well as here in Seattle. So I was a little surprised, I guess, to see that that heart and plus the veracity of the attitude about those issues, particularly around crime and homelessness, the strength of their concern is really kind of a little surprising to me, Mary. I was going to ask you, I mean, along those lines, Ron, would you guys took that poll statewide? Was there a sharp division right through central Washington where the western part of the state says let's focus on crime and safety and the eastern parts of something else entirely or was it really kind of what you saw all over the place? Much more about on the bladder were all over the place because it was the second strongest item amongst liberals moderates and conservatives to see that sort of uniformity across as the number two issue with all three of those ideological groups talks about the strength of that issue. So it really wasn't sort of a geographically broken down measure and the ideology was really just jumping out at me on this research, Mary. Very interesting. Finally, 44% of those polled approve of governor inslee while 51% disapprove. So with the margin of error at 4.4%, it's hard to tell if the majority approves or disapproves of the incumbent's job. What do you see when you look at those numbers? Well, I'm sure that those aren't the best numbers you want as an office holder. The other the assorted when you look in the internals with the governor, I mean, east corps is very highly with, you know, with the liberal base, but the independence and the moderates have moved away from the governor and he's not polling very well, I think like only 17% with that moderate middle ground group. So that's why his numbers are as upside down as they are. Again, the liberals love him, the moderates, not so much. All right, Ron, thanks so much for your insight, always appreciate it. When to Nellie Anderson was just 17 years old, he shot two women during a drug robbery, killing one of them. He was given 61 years in prison. But recently, the state Supreme Court overturned a similar sentence for a white defendant, saying that his youthful immaturity must be taken into account. Now Anderson's lawyers say he wasn't given the same treatment because of his race. In a split decision, the Supreme Court has already denied Anderson's request for re sentencing, but he is asking the justices to reconsider that decision. Jeff posner, northwest news radio. 6 of the ten people who were killed in a float plane crash on mutiny bay have now been recovered. The NTSB has moved the recovered wreckage of that float plane to a secure facility where investigators will try to reconstruct the plane and determine why it crashed. Governor inslee is being sued by a man who thinks it is unsafe to be around vaccinated teachers. I don't think it's safe for my child right now to be in school around all these features that have been injected with these gene therapy products. Peter Walton has sued governor inslee before over COVID restrictions and mandates. This time he wants the state Supreme Court to end the state of emergency immediately. But his argument before the court commissioner was full of half truce and pseudoscience. He's outright came out and said this numerous times, but if you're not injected or you're not wearing a mask, you're a danger, you can pass possibly pass on the disease as somebody else, which now we know that's just not true. But it is true. Both masks and the vaccine have been proven safe and effective in curbing the spread of COVID-19. The governor has ordered the emergency to end on October 31st to give hospitals time to get back into compliance after certain requirements were waived to increase medical staffing during the pandemic, but Walton says that's not soon enough a decision on whether the case will move forward is expected next week. Seattle Public Schools prepares to offer students in-person learning by April 19, as per Inslee's orders
"Could be back to in person learning in less than a month. On Friday, governor Inslee ordered all school district statewide offer some form of in person learning no later than April 5th for kindergarten through sixth grade in April, 19th for all grade levels. We're doing this because we have experienced a mental health crisis for many of our Children. This will provide them an option. That suits their needs of their families. This order gives those districts that have not reopen like Seattle public schools a few weeks to iron out the logistics to do so. Governor Inslee announces next steps in re-opening plan for Washington counties and school districts
"Hinting at it for weeks. Governor Jay Hands Lee makes the announcement after one year of closure of our schools. The time has come for every child in the state of Washington to have access to on site instruction, his reasoning. We're doing this because we have experienced a mental health crisis for many of our Children. This will provide them an option. That suits their needs of their family is order has two parts, starting with the younger students. April 5th all students in grades kindergarten through six. Most have the opportunity to engage in an on site hybrid model of instruction. And by April 19th all other K through 12 students must be provided a hybrid model of instruction. In schools that are K through five. It'll it'll apply through K through five. Able 19th. Every school district will need to have at least at least 30% of their pre pandemic. Average of weekly instructional hours that will be provided in person for all K through 12 students, he says. Families who want to remain online on Lee will be able to do so. Going on to say the science shows this can be done safely. There are over 1004 school 400 schools that are doing this safely today with minimal in school transmission. There are over 200 School district's who have been able to figure this out. And there are over 400,000 students that have safely been able to enjoy on site instruction should their families so desire. This is a wondrous miracle that we want every child to be able to experience. We know we can do this safely, and we're confident our ability to do that. And there's federal money available to pay for it. And for mental health services for students, passage of the American Rescue Plan Act. We estimate schools in our state. We'll have received about $2.6 billion that's with a B. $2.6 billion in pandemic relief, and I've heard from many educators who would like that money to go to mental health aid for students. With counselors, nurses and other support workers for a variety of the challenge. Our students have I agree with those educators. We need to do this. A spokesperson for the Washington Education Association. That's the teachers union says they agree a safe return to schools is important. In a written statement, she goes on to say the governor's announcement assumes that districts have the ability to provide safe teaching and learning. And she says some district's just aren't prepared yet. She also says local unions will continue to bargain with district's over a safe return to buildings. Seattle School District has been reluctant to reopen classes. Washington expanding COVID-19 vaccine eligibility on March 17
"Following just before President Biden told the country last night. He wants all adults to be able to get the covert vaccine. "Dave Ross. Oh Joke points legislative edition. Almost Everyone is asking lawmakers this season to make up some revenue and that Charism department transportation as well. So, Chris, how much do they need? Boy? They're down $1.3 billion. That's how short they are of their revenue forecasts. There was the Roger will are the head of the Washington Department of Transportation. Says they've got about $3 billion worth of stuff that they had, you know, projected that they were going to be getting money for it, and they're down 1.3. So they're trying to figure out exactly what they're going to do on. So they're gonna be asking the Legislature to help them recoup some of that money, So that could mean new taxes. It could mean an increase in the gas tax. We've talked about that before. We've also talked about whether or not they're going to be increasing tolling prices are asking. Washington Transportation Commission toe raise those prices because toller or fewer tolling people out there means fewer told in dollars, so they're gonna have to be some serious conversations. Millar says. Yes, I'm sorry that we're not a bright, shiny revenue circumstance, but we've we've all been there before. And we need to remain calm as we address is one thing is certain. Millar says that some much needed projects are going to be pushed back when you, uh the current law revenue available to the agency. And the commitments that the agency has to make way have some stuff that is going to have to be firm and projects that won't be deferred or most likely related to fish passage, where Governor Inslee's made it quite clear that the state will continue to spend aggressively on that to replace culverts that impede fish and, of course, that's also under a federal court mandate. Stuart Elway asked people in Washington about their opinions on current events as well as issues facing the state Legislature. I asked Elway what he found when asking about proposed new taxes in Washington state, finding a way to Hey, for the proposals on balance the budget and put in a new programs is not gonna be easy. Although there was pretty wide discrepancy difference between the partisans in our poll, Democrats largely favored all three of those by pretty substantial margins and Republicans. Opposed them by equally substantial margins. And with the Democrats controlling both houses and the governor's chair That makes it a little easier, But it might be a tougher sell out in the public. There are three questions you asked about legislative proposals to having to do with police and one having to do with carbon emissions. Let's start with this was such a top of mind issue and it still is police reform. So banning chokeholds. What did you find that people felt about that? Well, there were strong support in this poll. And again. We ask this last summer, and then we asked that we did. A survey last when we talked about was King County and Seattle on Lee. And the results have been similar, so strong support, 69% said They favored making it easier to de certify problem police officers so they cannot be rehired somewhere else. 62% favored banning the use of totals and neck restraints, and those numbers have been fairly consistent throughout the whole year and and across the state. But again strong partisan differences, almost unanimous support among Democrats and super majority opposition among Republicans on that issue. And then one of the big issues Governor Inslee is pressing for this legislative session is environmental reform. Let's just talk about a broad sense of lowering carbon emissions. What did responded to tell you? Well, we asked if they favored or opposed requiring makers of gasoline and other fuels to reduce carbon emissions. 63% were in favor and 28% were opposed, and and assuming it falls along many of the same lines, the police questions Oh, yeah. Washington governor to require 14-day quarantine for travelers arriving from UK, South Africa

Can Seattle arts groups survive the pandemic?
"Corona virus is a public health crisis of course but it's also devastated the economy it's been especially destructive businesses that depend on people gathering together in person tourism restaurants and the arts. Kyw's arts and culture reporter. Marcy silman has been monitoring the health of the regional arts and culture community. She spoke with kim. Malcolm about what. We might see moving forward so marcy for the past couple of months. You've been doing some deep dive reporting on how the pandemic has impacted our cultural communities. How would you describe what you found across the board. Kim organizations are treading water. If they haven't already drowned you might remember last march. When governor inslee issued his social gathering restrictions. everyone had to shut down operations museums and some art galleries have started to welcome back visitors. But they're at twenty five percent of normal capacity which just does not sound sustainable. And marcy you and i've talked about how performing arts groups and musicians have been streaming content and how it just doesn't cover the costs for many of them. So what are arts leaders telling you about this pivot to digital when it doesn't pay the bills. Peter bowl who is the artistic director at pacific. Northwest ballet told me that he pivoted digital because he wanted to give some work to the dancers musicians backstage artisans and other staff who would otherwise be unemployed. According to a new study from the seattle advocacy group arts fund. Thousands of area of workers are still jobless and even though as we said. Some venues have reopened. This survey found only about nine percent of local artisans and been rehired many back part time or reduce salaries but kim beyond providing jobs. I think that this pandemic has really forced performing arts groups to reckon with the digital age in a way that they hadn't done before the pandemic kit. And what do you mean by that. Well for at least a decade arts groups have been trying to figure out how they compete with free or low cost online content that arts fund study that i mentioned found that every responding group plan to permanently integrate digital content into their arts program offerings the ceo of arts fund. Michael greer told me that's partly because audiences are really leery about heading into enclosed spaces with lots of people that component that new revenue component is going to be essential to kind of filling the void of individuals. Trepidation do moving back into the theaters or just a general reorganization of how society interacts with itself. Not even just in the arts bottom line marcie will most arts groups survived this pandemic. It's really hard to say for certain. But to quote the head of seattle's office of arts and culture randy angstrom. The sector is on the knife's edge getting people to value in compensate artists and creatives for their time was already a challenge. Then the pandemic it and it was devastating. And i think that that devastation was disproportionately felt by by park organizations and artists because they've been underinvested and undercapitalized for so long and i'll just note here by poc refers to artists who are black indigenous and people of color. What is happening with these communities. Well this summer one worries alicia. Johnston told me that they only have the funds to make it through the calendar year. I did check back with her earlier this week. And she says that right now. They've got about half the budget for twenty twenty. One heart of that came from contributions sparked by black lives matter but she told me those have tapered off and even though she describes herself as one worry self designated worrier about money. She's pretty hopeful that they'll raise the two hundred thousand dollars. They need to keep this community cultural center going. Marcy i know can county. And many private funds have funneled relief. Money to the arts sector. What are arts leader saying about what they need to survive. Many hope congress will enact another significant stimulus measure randy. Angst room would like to see a twenty first century version of the works progress administration. That was the depression era program that funded arts projects across the country. Local artists have already stepped up. And they've been making murals. And creating digital arts lessons plan for the public schools angstrom and many other folks think it's time to fairly compensate them for that work. And how optimistic is he that that might happen. I'm gonna let him answer that. I am hopeful because the creative community of the city gives me that help. I am hopeful because of the incredible resilience. I've seen and we need to meet that resilience with dollars and faith in their work but angstrom says the city cannot finance this on its own. They really need a major influx of federal dollars. At this point. Who knows when that's going to happen. We'll mercy speaking of resilience. I have to acknowledge. Even though i don't want to that this is most likely our last on air conversation about the arts as you retire from k. u. o. w. after a remarkable thirty five years. Marcy i just wanted to say thank you we're gonna miss you and all the attention and the advocacy for the arts. That you've paid Here in this part of the world.
