"Talked us about serious crimes in Manhattan in the last three years. When I came up like we were just talking about in New York in the late 70s before New York mayor Giuliani became married. It was UD east after double up to go across the Larry David and I would have to double up, for example, to go to get a sandwich at a place. You'd go in pez, right? You couldn't survive if you didn't. It was as simple as that in New York. We're right back and by the way, and you couldn't go from the comedy clubs in midtown to down to the village without taking a buddy with you. It was that dangerous. We're right back where we started. And now for this guy, and I speak on behalf of a Democrats independent libertarians, Republicans, all of us were appalled at what Alvin Bragg did because this is it in a nutshell. If you're a criminal and you stick a gun and someone's face and you don't pull the trigger, you stick a gun in a bodega owner, a hard worker bodega owner, and then if you don't and you get they catch you, that you know what? Bragg would get that charged out from a felony that to a misdemeanor, and that guy would be back on the street again. It's a cyclical problem in New York, New York can't get its mojo back because of Alvin Bragg. You know, even the mayor, like him or not, he's trying. Now, even governor hulk will now say it, we can't let these criminals back on the streets. Why? Because you're talking about it said, I'm talking about it every morning. You can't there's got to be consequences. It's why we have all these shootings. These guys are running rampant and brag and all these Soros funded DAs exactly what you said are bringing down and slowly crumbling all the great big cities. And I can't figure it out. So when he goes after Donald Trump, you know, everybody, Democrats, the far left woke socialists, even they said there's nothing there.

"And thanks Karen 6 31 of Wall Street time to bring in Michael Barr with more on what else is going on in New York and around the world. John, thank you very much, Sarah President Biden has approved a state of emergency as a winter nightmare continues in the buffalo area, New York governor Kathy hochul, as at least 28 people have died. We still have scores and scores of vehicles that were abandoned when people left during the storm. Governor hulk holt called it the blizzard of the century. Representative alike George Santos admitted he lied about his job experience and college education during his successful campaign for a House seat. The Long Island Republican spoke with city and state aired on ABC 7 about questions on his campaign website that he was Jewish. I always joked. I'm Catholic, but I'm also Jewish. And I've made that joke because growing up, I grew up fully aware that my grandparents were Jewish, came from a Jewish family, and they were refugees to Brazil, and that was always the story I grew up with and I've always known it very well. Santo says he plans to take office next month. New York police officials say they've captured a suspect. They say is responsible for knifing to death be a pediatrician in a Manhattan park and another man who had just left a bar in the East Village. The Biden administration is asking the Supreme Court to allow its student loan forgiveness plan to go into effect. The plan has been blocked by two federal courts during a month long legal dispute. "Deputy national security adviser for cyber and emerging technology and new burger. But first, this week, the Federal Reserve raised interest rates by 75 basis points for the fourth time in a row. Chair Jay Powell is making it clear he is prepared to raise interest rates as high as needed to get inflation under control. My colleagues and I are strongly committed to bringing inflation back down to our 2% goal. We have both the tools that we need and the resolve it will take to restore price stability on behalf of American families and businesses. It is very premature to be thinking about pausing. So people when they hear lags, they think about a positive very premature in my view to think about or be talking about pausing our rate. We have a ways to go. Our policy, we need ongoing rate hikes to get to that level. I talked with New Jersey governor Phil Murphy to see how higher interest rates are affecting New Jersey right now. We've been very opportunistic over the past 5 years to defeat and pay down a lot of debt and a lot of debt avoidance. So it is clearly I'm far more concerned about the impact that somebody's kitchen table than I am right now on our balance sheet. And I don't think the fed has any choice. These are factors that are beyond our control, whether it's COVID relief or a war in Europe, there's no other choice, but to be aggressive and do a Paul Volcker here and get out ahead of this. Well, I'm so glad you put it that way, governor, because I was curious because you have seen it from both sides. You know the way the markets work, you also know what it means for the state. We have some of your fellow Democrats now are writing to chair Jay Powell saying, you know, you're going too far too fast. It's going to hurt us too much. You come down the side of its painful, but it needs to be done. Is that correct? I'm afraid that that is correct, and I don't say that lightly because the pain is significant at the kitchen table. It's a weird David you and I have talked about this. It's a weird economy. We have our lowest unemployment rate ever below the national average. Our revenues at the state level continue to be solid, we've been upgraded three times this year by credit rating agencies would pay debt down as I mentioned. And yet at the same time, there's enormous pain at that kitchen table largely due to affordability. And governor is that pain you think being felt is people go to the polls in New Jersey for these midterms because that might spell some not very good news for Democrats. Well, we'll see. I mean, you've got the normal reality of a midterm election with an incumbent party in The White House. So you begin in a tough place. And then you add to that recovering from a pandemic, inflation affordability, it won't make the races any easier. I am heartened by the quality of our incumbents and candidates, and I think there's no comparison in most of these races. And secondly, I think as a party, beginning with the president, we've done we've done a lot. We're probably not getting as much credit as we should get, but we've done a lot, whether it's the inflation reduction act in New Jersey. We had a $2 billion historic property tax relief program unlike anything ever before. And God willing the folks on the ballot will get credit for some of that. Tell us about the process of voting in New Jersey. There's a lot of concern about voter security, election place security around the country. You've seen some of the reports, for example, a lot of Arizona. What is the situation of Jersey? Are you beefing up some of the security around polling places? Yeah, thank God David R story on elections and voting is counter almost completely to the narrative that you just alluded to. We have stood for opening up democracy since day one. So if you want to vote in New Jersey, you've got the ability to show up and we'll make sure that's safe and secure. We've had no issues at all. You can vote by mail. Just get your ballot in by election postmarked election night. Or thirdly, beginning last year, we have in person early voting. And that's going really well. So thank God we don't have, we stand for opening up democracy. We stand for transparency. Governor, what position does crime place on the ballot? You've got an interesting, the Republicans bless their hearts are really good at playing the crime card. And they're playing it really well again in this election and there's no doubt crime is an issue in our state. The biggest challenge we've had our car thefts, but violent crimes are down meaningfully, shootings are down meaningfully, homicides are down meaningfully. When I say meaningfully in all those cases somewhere between 15 and 30%. So again, the political discourse versus the reality. And the other thing I'd like to get off my chest is if you're going to be anti crime, you can't just be anti some crimes. So, I mean, the reaction to Paul Pelosi's very severe injuries is shameful among unfortunately a whole lot of Republicans on the ballot. We're either all in this together to make America safe or we're playing political games and sadly there's a lot of the latter. Let's talk about taxes, particularly I think it's called the employer convenience tax, something like that. Where is that sit with people who are living and working in New Jersey, but with New York employment? Where does that sit right now? It's a good question. At the Supreme Court level, there was a New Hampshire versus Massachusetts case, and we were unsuccessful. So we're trying to find a way. And by the way, we get along with New York. I'm a huge fan of governor hulk and mayor Adams. We do so much together. We root for each other's success, but it's a question of therapist. If you're paying full freight in the old traditional reality of going commuting into work every day, when in fact

"One of the biggest right now is education with the kids The CRT stuff in school has even some Democrat parents I know on Long Island Absolutely furious about the CRT and the drag queen story hour stuff This is going to I believe drive an enormous number of suburban mother votes over to our side and the Republican side and could benefit the Anthony D esposito campaign for Congress Absolutely And especially in this district where there's such a heavy population of the orthodox community and a lot of people who send their kids to Catholic school I was a product of shama high school And we have this far left method of trying to push substantial equivalency into our schools where the state legislature actually wants to say that if you go to a private school that means the local school district is going to oversee what's being taught in schools And it's absolutely ridiculous We need to stand up to it And I think I agree with you wholeheartedly It's definitely one of the things one of the issues that we're seeing that the left is pushing both on a state level I mean I know they tried about a year ago and they saw a lot of pushback and then they laid off a little bit And then they pushed it again a few months ago and they saw the pushback They laid off again But make no mistake about it If governor hulk will wins and they keep their majority in the Senate and the assembly they are going to push this right through and shove it right down our throats And we need to stand up to it And we need to stand up to it by sending a clear message throughout Nassau county and Long Island that we are this isn't any more about a Republican or Democrat issue This is about American issues It's about Long Island issues and it's about common sense And thankfully the Republican Party and the team that we have here at NASA county put together by chairman Cairo is the team of common sense

"China facing possible human rights allegations and the Trump team is accusing the Justice Department of criminalizing his possession of documents from all let's get to the newsroom and Bloomberg's Denise Pellegrini Denise. Thank you, Julia, and lawyers for the former president have now told a judge the Justice Department they claim is criminalizing former president Trump's possession of what they call personal documents. They're asking for a special master or neutral third party again to review the documents instead, and the former president's lawyers are also complaining about privacy violations at Mar-a-Lago. They're talking about the FBI's seizure of those top secret documents at Mar-a-Lago and Bloomberg's Chris strom says watch for more drama tomorrow. We need to keep an eye on the court hearings that are coming up. I mean, the department is most likely going to be saying more in court. There's a hearing that's going to be the take place on Thursday with regard to this special master suit. So stay tuned. Stay tuned. Did me time the Justice Department sources also tell strom that the investigation into former president Trump and those Mar-a-Lago documents is still in the early stages and any charges they say likely won't be made public until after the midterm elections. The United Nations office on human rights is accusing China of possible crimes against humanity. The report sites mass detention of Uighurs in Xinjiang. California is just declared a great emergency, asking people to cut electric use, warning of possible blackouts as a heat wave there intensifies. Try not to use too much electricity in those key hours. And the key hours are between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m. in the evening. Try to reduce your consumption to the extent possible. And governor Gavin Newsom is blaming climate change for all the heat, flooding devastation in Pakistan, worse than thought the U.S. has pledged $30 million in aid, White House press secretary karine Jean Pierre. With these funds, USAID partners will prioritize urgently needed support for food, nutrition, safe water, improve sanitation, and hygiene and shelter assistance. And some reports estimate at least half a million people have been displaced in Pakistan by this flooding. Taiwan is starting to stockpile some of the same weapons that Ukraine has been using in the war against Russia, and Taiwan, stockpiling the weapons, including javelin anti tank missiles, Taipei's getting those from the U.S. and Taiwan is also boosting its order of long-range artillery weapons. The results are out in the Alaska special election, Republican Sarah Palin has lost the Alaska House race to Democrat Mary pelta. This was in Alaska at large congressional seat. And Times Square about to be a gun free zone, the new law goes into effect tomorrow governor hulk will cause it necessary after the Supreme Court ban New York's earlier libit sudden carrying concealed weapons. trades of March 2020 a shield against uncertainty Alex welcome to Bloomberg Thank you very much for having me I'm excited about this conversation As am I let's start talking a little bit about your background You earned a PhD in mathematics from the University of Chicago Tell us a little bit about that experience and how you get to apply math as a fund manager and a trader Well first of all I will confess the experience of being in graduate school University of Chicago was so amazing that for many years almost decayed afterwards I suffered from nostalgia Even when I was a successful Wall Street trader I was often suffering from nostalgia for my graduate school days So that's a quick summary I think it's pretty amazing for me at least to be in a very small circle of like minded people who had even though I grew up in a different country in backgrounds or different but interestingly mathematicians all around the world do the same math And they play the same math games all the same puzzles So there was so much in common so much fun to have in that environment Were you ever planning on pursuing a career in pure mathematics Or was the thinking I'll take this skill and education I earned the Chicago and apply it to Wall Street was tell us what you're thinking was when you were in school You know honestly since I was a teenager there was kind of a double thinking in my mind It's almost like two superimposed ideas that I was not really clear My natural path was always to do theoretical math I wanted to be a mathematician since I was four years old But my fascination with finance industry was strategy was already there I remember seeing the movie Wall Street in back in Russia and I was totally fascinated by it And I just whole idea of financial strategy was so exciting to me I think someone in the back of my mind I always thought that at some point I would end up on Wall Street but at the same time I was making all the emotions to pursue the career and theoretical math So I think I was a little conflicted about this until certain points So you mentioned you saw the film Wall Street growing up in Russia You grew up in St. Petersburg did you know you always wanted to come to the west It's hard to imagine seeing such a just like capitalist film like Wall Street even with good guys bad guys and corruption in the film even still.
