"Voice of seeing Louis big change last week made in Springfield, Illinois, where the governor and the legislature have approved slot machines and sports betting for that state, and it's good news for our friends at Fairmount park. President Brian Zander is in the house right now. And we were just talking off the air about Boston, which of course, the Bruins are playing the blues in the Stanley Cup in Boston. They are closing down after eighty four years Suffolk downs where they've had horse racing, and that's going the way the a dodo bird. I think this week. Yeah, it's, it's really kinda sad. I was living in the Boston area for some time. When Suffolk downs was the place to go and really what's happened. It's quite honestly, the same thing that could have happened to us. And that is racetracks that don't have alternative forms of gaming, whether it be sports betting or slots or card rooms or something they simply can't compete with all the other race wrecks that do have such things. So last week the legislature, and with the governor in Illinois have approved sports betting and slot machines for places like Fairmount park. Yes. So there were six new casinos approved, including one for the city of Chicago, which was obviously very important in getting the Bill passed on a statewide level because that's where all the votes are. Right. So there's six new casinos. And then there's three race wrecks that are left in the state. When I first started there were seven, and so the three racetracks that are left will now be allowed to become what they call abra see. No. And also with sports, wagering what's going to happen at Fairmount park? Then will will you be able to wager on the NFL or major league baseball or the NBA while there. Oh, sure, the, the only you'd be really able to wage on anything and they'll be everything from simple bets. Over under win or lose to very complex proposition bets. The only restriction that they did, I think. Which is a good idea is you have to bet on Illinois collegiate sports in this in the state of Illinois. So we can't bet north western games, or, or Illinois, or champagne or anything like that. Can you bet on a batter or an inning? Well, that's what they call a tier to wager. So a simple bed saved by b you can bet on the cardinals, and they're an over under on the number of runs. And so there's a line there. But then it gets more interesting. You can you can say in the game bet on what is Paul Goldschmidt gonna do next at bat. Is he going to get a single as a double is he gonna hit a home run? You can bet all those kind of props, and obviously, the ads go up. And that's those kind of wagers those in game wagers are proving to be very popular, especially with the, the younger demographic. But you have to be at Fairmont park to do that. You don't have to be at Fairmont, you can register there, but you, you do have to be in the state of Illinois, and they will they will love. They'll take a look at that. And that will be by geo location, just like you. You have a GPS service in your car. So if you're, if you're coming over the poplar street bridge, and you haven't hit the welcome to Illinois sign yet. Your bet won't be taken. But so you can cross the river. Get out your iphone and bet through Fairmount park. Yes. Eventually once we set that up, and of course, that's the mobile platform, and then what they call the retail platform will be actually say a part of Fairmount park of being sportsbook from having the big odds board. And you know what we already have a thousand televisions, but several big screens. And then you can watch whatever it is you would like to wage around. So what happens to the casino Queen? Are you going to start owning them or so the so the, the consideration of the casino, Queen was very, very important in this legislation? They've been really suffering in the last four or five years, really Fairmont park has been no part of that because we haven't done anything. We don't have one even single. Slot machines. But we're there were being really killed is with these, you know, up to five video gaming terminals that are in literally every single Byron Illinois. And so they've just been kind of, in a in their ninety Saint Louis would every single town that surrounds e sale, Louis they're popping up everywhere. And it's really really, you know, hurt their business. So they've been kind of drifting down. But what this legislation does is it has an effect a hold harmless agreement for not just the casino Queen. But also the city of Saint Louis that relies quite a bit on the revenue from the casino Queen. Right. Yeah. Sure, they were at the point where they're going to have to start laying off firefighters, and police. And that's not a very good look for our, our region. In addition to that there's a local tax on on the on the winnings. The vote say would happen at Fairmont park in whereas. Many of the original boats that, that tax would go entirely to the city of Collinsville where the where the receipt, no is. In this case, they, they split it up where Collins would get forty percent all, which may be affected impacted as thirty percent and the casino Queen. We'll get thirty percent of the of the of the tax revenues meant for localities directly from Fairmont park. So we think the combination of those two things we think that it's really put the casino Queen any Saint Louis in a much better position. And the Representative from east Saint Louis a Representative of Greenwood and the Senator from east Saint Louis area, Senator belt, they've both voted. Yes. On the on the measure. So when will sports betting start at Fairmount park? Well, that's a, that's a great question. The Illinois gaming board which will oversee all of these things in, in two days, the legislature managed to give them a whole bunch of work. They have to approve. Who've six casinos, including as I said, the city of Chicago, which that's I'm assuming going to be complicated. They have to develop an application for the existing racetracks of which Fairmount is one so that they can get into the into the casino business in they have to really from scratch, right. Rules for sports, wagering. Oh, that's going to be a long process, isn't it? Well, they've done it. The thing is, is we'll, I think we'll be the sixteenth state that will have legalized sports betting. So there's a lot that they can learn from other states and, and look at their rules, and see if they're ethical under the statute, that was just passed depending, how bad we want the money, we can just Xerox the other rules and just right in Illinois, instead of wealth has Michigan. Yeah. I think, well, the bunnies actually let's face it. That's the reason why this was done. You know, the, the new governor governor Pritzker is very, very embarrass. He's got some really big plans. That's. His kind of his motto is think big and he's gotten through quite an agenda, virtually everything that he tried for, in terms of raising the minimum wage tobacco Twenty-one, he's, he's going to sign legalized recreational marijuana Bill. And so now he has the, the gaming part is, is meant for what they call vertical construction, which is anything, that's not a you know, a road or highway. And that's because, you know, we have prisons that are falling down in schools, hospitals that really need a lot of help, and that's put the, the revenue from these sources meant to do if you if you weren't able to get the sports gaming the gambling, or if you weren't able to get the slot machines, would you still be able to stay in business? Well, we just talked about Suffolk and Suffolk downs in Boston. Yes. And that's, that's the reason why they went out of business. You know, Charlie we, we might have been able to hold on with a very, very short meet of, of maybe ten days or so just so. That we would have something there. But that isn't really what anyone wants right now. Everybody Fairmount on the backstretch the horsemen and the trainers. They're just happy now that they will soon be able to make a decent living. They won't have to move out of their homes. And so, at this point everybody's in a good mood, I guess, so. Well, thank you very much. Bryan Zander, for joining us today, and giving us the latest from your perspective. We sure appreciate it in for your time, I'm going to give you fifteen fluid ounces of Andrea's brush, on steak sauce. The savory touch, it's in the cooking. It's a fine restaurant Townsville villain. Have you ever have you ever been there? I have. It's it is a great restaurant in that is a great steak sauce. It's been it's been around. It's actually unkowns Collinsville wrote has been there, a very long time. And it's, it's just as good every single time you go, theoretically, could I get on my phone sitting at Andrews? And bet on the cardinals through Fairmount park at some point in the future. Yes. Wow, thank you so much for joining us. Brian Zander to be continued that you Charlie Charlie Brennan, on the voice of Saint Louis. When we come back, a rather unusual take novel on, I think, on all these expired plates out there. And some of the ramifications we're gonna get into that on the voice of Saint Louis, but I want to tell you about Stewart crawl our main man at beam of Saint Louis I was just texting a fellow today, who's actually in Ireland about the beam because he wants one was asking me about that. And I don't think Stewart goes all the way to Ireland, but he does serve as everybody within the signal of fifty thousand red hot watts. If you're if you can hear my voice, yes, Stewart crawl will install a beam vacuum for you. I've talked about that beam central vacuum for a long time. It cleans all surfaces from the carpet to the tile the fireplace. The ceiling fan. It's got a lot of suction so it cleans things better. In fact, I just use it last week to clean up my car vacuum. All the mats. If there's pet hair all over the place they can take care of that. "Of fame. How 'bout it round of applause for John? I love it. I'm I'm so excited for him. And for Andrea darlas and for Marlene Marlene wells would a great day here at WGN radio. Some of our colleagues and former colleagues getting the recognition they deserve. I'm so ex. And I'm I'm honored to be filling in for John John's out this week and into next, and it's great to be taken the reins of his show on the day, that he's inducted to the WGN, walk of fame. How about that? That's awesome. He knows coming. I don't know. We never talked about it. But I in my head, obviously I was rooting for him. And when I found out about it this morning, I was like, yeah. I called him well deserved this is yeah. I was gonna say I wanted to know if his if changed at all of his, his ego was getting bigger in the last couple of days because he had gotten a early mention. When he comes back to see if the sign his name, H, O F, or no, w oh, yeah. From and then the year. Yeah, every time he goes to the to the sports collectible show, John Williams, King, John, w f it's amazing. How about that? And the think about that he Anstey virtual. So now I mean if you thought those two are insufferable before. Now, they're both walk affairs is going to be Bertrand. And this is gonna be I don't know how you going to do it. I don't know. The phone number three one two nine eight one seventy two hundred. We got a great show lined up take it through this Friday. We're gonna talk about fun things to do this weekend. That's coming up at two thirty, as it is every Friday. We're not going to be bright side today. That's John's thing it would be dishonourable. I would be dishonoring the walk of fame champion. By doing his segment, but we will talk about fun things to do a little bit later in the show. Ask is gonna join us coming up here right after the first break of the show to talk about Springfield. Here we are. We are less than twelve hours away from the end of the spring session. The first session for governor Jay Pritzker and the democrat controlled house and Senate and Springfield. They were a lot of issues that were on the table that we're talking about from his budget address from the state of the state told us about legalizing marijuana. Told us about stand gambling Chicago casino, a graduated tax on the twenty twenty ballot. And here we are the final day. Not a lot of that stuff is done, the graduated taxes. I'll give him credit for that, because that got done early all that really says, is that it goes to the voters, the voters will decide in twenty twenty because they've got a year. See any of that stuff. But the legalize marijuana earlier in the week, we saw that the Senate passed through today, the house taking it up as we speak, and we'll talk to Patti about this. They're doing testimony different. Lawmakers are getting getting their opportunity to be on microphone, debate portion, and there's a lot of lawmakers who want to talk about this. I saw Dave McKinney from the, the former Sun-Times editors at BC. He was tweeting out that there were fifteen lawmakers lined up signed up and lined up to get their five minutes to talk about this. So there's probably good chance that they're not going to vote on this until later this afternoon, probably during roadshow. But the point being this is something that is we're on the precipice of possible legalization of recreational. Cannabis in this state state of Illinois. Which, I know is, is seems to me to be no brainer in the world that we live in now. And you've seen a bunch of different states, do this. I'm going to say it's Illinois was always behind the times on this even when they get to everyone was doing medical marijuana. For members even governor Quinn, and then governor around her who both reluctantly dip their toes into marijuana, meaning they were okay? But it's only only for people with these three ailments, they went an entirely restrictive way. And for everything Illinois, it can be a conservative. I know sounds like an oxymoron, but it can be a conservative conservative liberal state. I mean, the Democrats down in Springfield, they're not necessarily the ones that are going to jump on the progressive bandwagon, but they have a governor governor Pritzker going on the precipice of making Illinois, another one of the states that record that legalizes recreational marijuana. We're right there. And what about a casino, another topic L, if that we've been talking about for she how many years, I remember making jokes the jokes about Rosemont has Rosemont had it at one point, and then they took it away, and then there was remember all the conversation about that. And then even the rivers casino, which isn't displays was the last one, I think that they had in the state of Illinois. And this idea that they're always was pushback and opposition to a casino in Chicago, proper, whether it was the politicians didn't want it for moral reasons, or they just want to get into it. And there's, there's a lot of moral issues at the center of gaming and gambling in Chicago. But mostly it was just they didn't want the behemoth. That was Chicago to own and operate or or to house, it casino that would compete with some of these other. Areas, subur- suburbs, or Nisa, what have you that they penned on that, that gambling, money Chicago, a lot of different sources for revenue don't necessarily need a casino. You see this in Hammond? Indiana. That's why you haven't been enjoy yet and Aurora in displays. Having downtown Chicago or Chicago proper casino. That's a lot of competition thing about all the people who make a choice right now to go to a casino because they want to gamble entertainment purposes. They're not. They're getting there have to choose to go somewhere in the collar area. Right. If they say, we're gonna put this casino at the micro recite and near south side, or, or maybe downtown or maybe somewhere in this vicinity. Nobody's going to be taken that track out too. Displaying Juliet Aurora, northwest Indiana. They're gonna be right here. So for the longest time, there was a lot of confidence. People did not want a casino in Chicago. And here we are at one fifteen on the last day of spring session. Pretty much looking down the barrel of a casino in Chicago. A lot of big news stories today that are wrapping up in Springfield that I would have. I'm scratching my head five years ago that we'd be talking about it. We are John Williams show. I'm just incompetent for John today. Coming up, we'll get Patty on a line from Springfield. Get us update on what's happening down there, and we'll continue the show.

"To Steve DALE'S pet world. This happens way, too often and prompted me to do something about it. And I'm grateful. I was able to do something about it. In January of this year, thirty one dogs died in a suburb of Chicago in a kennel fire dogs had no way out. There was no human being there to call the fire department. And here's what I learned this happens a lot on Christmas Eve last year. Kennel fire took the lives of nine dogs in Maryland on March fifth of this year. No dog made it out alive from kennel fire and Stacy Minnesota. That's outside Minneapolis. Eighteen dogs perished in that fire. Other states have already contacted me about what I'm about to tell you about. Also, thirty dogs were kill during a fire at a kennel in west Michigan in spring of this year. I mean that's crazy. I mean what, what, what we're almost at one hundred dollars. If you do the math here. So I thought we need to do something about it. And the problem is, I mean, the good news is the good news is for children child daycare centers. They're all sorts of laws, and they must have sprinklers as they should. They must have a fire alarm system as they should rigging directly to first responders, and they have a human being there with the children and the children aren't in cages. I hope so they can get out, right. If there's a fire, potentially, not the case with a dog kennels or boarding facilities of cats potentially but it's usually dogs. There are no laws. There are no fire protections anywhere. So I thought, okay, I've got to start in my state, Illinois. So now according to a law or what will be a law, when the governor signs it, and I'm told our governor governor Pritzker is not only going to sign up, but excited about signing this, that from here on out there must be a sprinkler system or must be fire alarms. Ring directly to dispatch or best of all must be a human being there twenty four seven because the dogs can't call. The fire department. The other thing is that dogs and cats and kennels are usually in cages, so they have no way out. It's horrible. So these horrible deaths, which are with what I'm describing we'll prevent these or a lot of these deaths from happening and what I learned the fire departments were happy about all this, because the. Sooner they get to a fire less structural damage, but more importantly, their lives are safer. Also would dogs struggling and suffering and. Panicked, really. Firefighters can get bitten, and that's happened because the dogs don't know what's going on. They can't even see what's going on because of the smoke all preventable. And now this will be in Illinois. New law, as I said, I've already heard from other states, and I'm hoping that other states passed similar laws because this will help not only human lives as I described. But it will save animal lives for sure. I've talked before about leptospirosis. It's a long word easy for me to say not necessarily easy to understand, but we will make it.

"Federal investigators are probing Jay Pritzker toilets, and this is your fricken fault. Because you're the one who put out the commercial when you, you know, running whatever, you know, think tank dirty tricks Parisian as you were running that you put up, you know, the whole toilet that that worked out great. You really runner really really came through in the end there, bro. That's all fake news. All that all know, really what this came from was a democrat inspector general at the county issued this report about the toilets, basically ripped the toilets out to get a tax reduction, which he did fan today came out and Dave McKinney. Antonio Arnold to great reports guys know the best so he could take it credibly. But to be completely Frank about it not as a partisan, but just as a former prosecutor, I don't see much in it. You don't know. Governor governor Pritzker says he's not concerned with that. He hasn't been contacted by feds in any capacity, and they would that be if if he would be considered a target, which no one has said he is the year the last the last person to get contacted, but even more so even the article that they did such a good job with. They haven't subpoenaed records from the role of in offices like the treasury, and they haven't interviewed anybody and this. This is not like this is new this has been since last summer. So at this thing was really a heater case that was going forward, you'd think there would be more. Even beyond that. If you read the very familiar with the report because rodent has factory, but yes, I did do a press conference on the report. I think. Anyway, responsible for that thing now. No, no. I think that the people that were involved were far removed from too far removed from the governor's well, his wife and brother in law. There's including to the report are under the federal criminal investigation. That's the WBZ report. And then it was her her assistant orchestrate kind of orchestrate things, but you're by the ones that signed the documents that were allegedly fraudulent, and then the Cook County assessor Fritz Kate was approached by several reporters say says his office has not been contacted by the feds. So to your point wouldn't early in investigation. Isn't that first thing you, would you would go after those documents, you would think so that and another kind of point to in these cases, historically adventure Georgia underneath whether there's just more of a pattern of of corruption for for these things to become actual indictments. And again, I think he's very kind of removed insofar as the facts that were in the reports something though, they take them out in handcuffs, like only three months. Into the job. I think the bigger thing. I think not doing that. No. I think the bigger issue is it's the timings bad for him. Just because right now, there's a big legislative agenda. He's trying to get done this might provide ammunition for the other side. But I I just don't read it to them like this good reporting. But I don't see this being a big problem for we never like to see that though. We've had so many of our on the history of Illinois get, you know, beat the target of these types of probes. It's not it's not a good sign where you see him right now coming out JV brisker and sitting down with press and trying to get it know trying to put a face to the legislation that he wants to get done here. And he wasn't doing that before. Why was he doing kiss? He was getting organized. I think is getting organized. And I think they weren't exactly sure what the legislation was going to be. I think a lot of legislations actually gonna be dropped next week when they they get back in session, but they have a lot of priorities. I I do a budget has big things a progressive tax. You've got recreational. Wanna potential gaming, and then a cat capital Bill and a lot of it seemed like if you'd get done fairly quickly. There are at least hopes about a number of few of those items. But typically the session the big items don't get done to the last hour because they have to go through building support and having the committee Harrington, but the the river meets the road here in the next five weeks five weeks is by July first though, right? In may. Oh, it's June one. Yeah. June the last day of Mays last session and in like for the gaming Bill, Lori life. It's only gonna be sworn in for eleven days before the session ends. And so whatever they do regarding Chicago scene, or whatever they can do with that Bill makes you'd have to get hit the ground running. So. Do you think that's gonna pass? We're going to have recreational gaming Illinois do in jersey. I mean, the draft king fan duel stuff. Yeah. Interests interest of full disclosure. I represent casino say which one, but I do, but I'll give you my opinion on it. I think the problem is one of the problems is in New Jersey where they allow draft kings fan duel in one spring court made the ruling that made it legal. They took eighty percent of the market, and the point is that those who have been operating, and this is the attorney general's words not mine illegally in the state for years. Why should they get rewarded by capture native percent of the market here that they need to go into the penalty box or they need to figure out a way to make them more equitable situation for the the twenty or so licenses at the governor's trying to sell very interesting again how they do. Kim doesn't wanna guys? Guys, we're asking that question. Exactly. Like that. It's so true. So how's your friend is he gonna get this through? I mean, we have a friend is he okay? Think about all that they're going to get try to get done in the next five weeks in the gaming Bill historically gets tied up because everybody wants a piece of it. Right. Once a casino and it dies, but the marijuana Bill the capital Bill the budget and the progressive tax tax is that's the hardest isn't it? Because it you have to you need a constitutional convention to change it. I get to go vote in the legislature. So you need seventy one votes, which the Democrats have seventy four, but some of the Democrats aren't thrilled with some of the things they've had to do all ready. So they're not going to get a Republican vote on it. Them because they. Well, I think something how's your mother Republican chairman? I set him up nicely. Yeah. Exactly, right. We've we hold them to sleep. Quarters of the house is is democrat exactly what. Dad is that'll be an advantage and he's flawlessly. You wait for the comeback. Tiger Woods yet. Don't don't sleep on the Republicans because the Republicans are seeking on the Republican. I get to be interesting. I the one obviously we're most interested in around here yet the recreational marijuana. Which were thinking about shifting to. And then the gambling because I think something's gonna come out that wasn't it. Or no, you think that's the recreational marijuana in December. I thought was a slam dunk. But I think even maybe the governor starting to talk about maybe it's slow this down a little bit why Russia through because there are so many things that we don't know the money isn't great in it the money even in this fan duel that kind of vetting the money's not great. They're micro betting the Mike. It's not the money's not the tax revenues aren't that? Great. The money's great. But the tax revenues are. Okay. But I m doing well, we had major league baseball guy in the other day talking about you know, they want to supervise. But I think that also. Baseball. Baseball guys, get all right? Okay. Football game. How's he doing? I launches with. This is the exact conversation. The FBI has to you. You've heard this too. When you were working for the Justice department, and you have to cull through the tape, and they go and you're like, okay. What who's he talking about there? The first game of the second guy. How's he doing? Okay. He's okay. What is is headphones on? Can you hear me? Okay. What is so difficult about getting this sports betting through New Jersey comes out today and says gamblers wagered more than two point three billion dollars in the ten months since they've legalized it. They think they'll overtake Nevada is the top sports betting market in the United States by twenty twenty they'll they're doing. All right. So what's the problem here? Well, there's a lot of different interests. You have existing gambling facilities like the casinos that invested a ton of money and time and effort and have been here and the argument against the fan and sports king is that they've been operating the state illegally. Why should we help surly give them a benefit when they've been taking money out of the state illegally in even on those top line revenue numbers? Kevin. It'd be very interesting to see what the actual tax dollars are that go to the state because the the numbers are huge. But they're still doing okay. Great. We're still doing okay. Perfect real nice. I mean, I could totally see the position. I mean, we've been here playing by the rules and these guys are coming in. They're not why should they be get this benefit? And that's your anything. It's not just that. It's beyond when you put a Bill like this through they call a Christmas. Tree bill. Everybody wants something. And by the time it gets voted on. It doesn't go anywhere. That's been going on for your classic, Illinois. Yeah. Yeah. It's not that bad guys. Kevin is not that bad. Government is he doing okay? How's this toilets today was a great day? But. Thank you, Pat. Thank you. I mean, that's right now, Jamie. Brady. That's how do you think? So far, though, I he's been so quiet. I don't know how to grade him yet. Well, Bill in four or five weeks. But I actually think he's not doing a bad job. He's he's real good at the people skills part of being governor. Meaning it was very surprising to me how how quickly he had justed to that. He's always been a nice smart, warm gun. Well, since you're making fun of me on this issue. I was at a restaurant here a couple of weeks ago, and he was in there. I don't really know minimum sale owed them, but he came walking over. That's how I was doing. Couldn't have been friendly. I go. That's a very big thing to do have nice conversation. So I think he's got that down, but I could Springfield. That's there's always competing interests, and it's pretty ugly. Did he tell them you're the toilet? When he came. Hey, I'm the guy that screws your over on the toilets. How you doing? Doing good. Give them more credit for coming over. And that's my. Yeah. It's not, you know, it's whether the godfather, it's not so businesses not threat to lamented business. It's only business. No. This is personal doesn't get more personal in this. Remember that at the very? Pretty personal. Sally sally. Sports betting legal. You could sit on your toilet. Make a bet on your phone, right? If you had one writes Ori, but if you're gamble enough. You will not have a pot to hey, there's a committee her income up. Kevin you wanna come down testify to that? Sure. Places. You bring it toilet on the floor. And I'll sit on. From my toilet. And I carry with me wherever I go to that's actually hooked up. It is people down there in the state capital who do things like that. Toilet on wheels. And they just sit on it as they're moving through. I actually come down. And visit do a show. I turn onto Springfield. No, no. We'll never have it. But what I think? I mean, listen, we had our guy, Nick. Or is it Vic the real guys Vick? But you know, our guy Nick is like, you know. What was wrong New Jersey making loans? Money is good. Why don't you won't make money while he's still? I think Knicks very bright guy. Sounds like you want you want make Moses. At the whole.

It means to me for ESPN that comes to cubs campus done stuff for the Padres. Cubs special visors. A special Dempster. There's a bunch of good. That's great. That's great. Tell it's Ivan progressive it just makes sense. You know what I mean? Like, I think she's so good. A brilliant baseball. Mark Trestman a head coach. I can't say the same about that one. It's the what what Lee XFL, I didn't even know the XFL still going it came back. When did they start? They play this summer. I believe. No. I think it's I think you have to wait a whole year. Oh year away. Yeah. I don't think they play this. But so you've got the alliance and that started by. My Notre Dame guy who's the head of Ebersol, son, Charley. Yeah. And Bill Polian and Bill Polian. But the XFL was dick ever souls thing with Vince McMahon. So who's the XFL is it is Vince McMahon WWE? So he's giving it another run given another run. Would you would you? I I guess before. I put the carpet for the horse you watch an alliance. No, neither am I will you watch XFL. No guys. No, yeah. No shot. I'll give that Seth fella. I run at. It's only because the thirty thirty wrote me at and made me all reminiscent of he hate me. And how that I all came out. I remember watching those first few games different. And then I fell off the bandwagon. Call the buddy of mine recently. I say man, let's go whatever we're going to go do and he's like I can't I'm got money to say f game. And I'm like what? Got them. It's not. An alliance of football or whatever it is. And I'm like, wow, you're betting a football. I thought it was bad when I bet WNBA game once. That is. Wow. Yeah. I mean, how do you have any idea? How you handicapped at league? I just I'll give the XFL a one week watch again. Okay. After the top of the hour. I wanna ask you the governor governor Pritzker has come out and said he is going to legalize sports gambling. They hope by the end of may. And it will definitely be rolling twenty licenses around the state, and he wants it rolling and time for football. And hopefully sooner I wanna see how people feel about that. He says he's gonna bring minimum in year one of two hundred million dollars to the state, which we desperately. So what is should you have? I don't have any say that like, where's the they're trying to out here? Look at our property taxes. I love for this to happen yesterday two hundred million they're saying, so like, how do you how people feel of like the mattress firm store across the street said we took over the one next door right next to mattress firm. There's a sportsbook. You could just literally go black. How our break I'm running across. I'm betting this game today. Think about how cool the first round the NCAA tournament would be would you have to go to Vegas anymore? No. You have your favorite bars here. And then you just go to it's it's not a not be. It's just a it's a sport sport to watch the games and play. I'm curious how people feel about their they do they like the easy access. They're going to have. I don't think we're going to get to the point right away where you could go to the United Center and go. Yeah. Can I have two tacos from big star in? Gimme fifty on the bulls, minus eight I don't think that's close cap. Sounds fantastic. Feis said to you a Jordan bulls and calves are playing tonight. You're like what a dog game. I said dude bulls are laying four we can go bet the gay while we're sitting there and cash it. I mean, don't you think though, Kathy would help the attendance for these things like would certainly help the TV ratings. I also it's also a different offering to be there live like it's like going to the horse track track to watch the beautiful athletes. But then also it's the action got that. Right. You got the accident going on right there. If you could watch the best athletes in the world, and you've got legitimate money on it. We're now you're bringing people that maybe haven't gambled before. Because it was legal kept them away from it. Now, it's out in the open. I think also drive them to go to watch go. "The lakefront, it's eighteen in floss more. I'm Steve Grzanich to the WGN radio newsroom. And these are the stories that matter on seven twenty WGN the Steve Cochran show on seven twenty WGN, Texas to ninety one seventy two hundred got a bunch of insomnia cures coming. We'll get to that in a bit. Dino have the Oscar nominations which are rolling out now after eight o'clock. Don't listen don't be lazy. Texter there's there's people that text in all the time particular points of view the fire right in the far left aren't the solution. To the problem. I'm not a Republican. I'm not a democrat. I have never been more in the middle of my life. And somebody texted a few minutes ago. You want illegal immigration, you just don't have the guts to say don't be an idiot. Because seriously. That's a dumb thing to say. That'd be like if I found out who you are behind your phone number and said, you're racist. I don't know you. I don't know if you're a racist. But your text seem to indicate that all you want is white people in this country. Well, it's not the way it works in America. So don't be that. And I'll be a little more creative than by the way, two sides to every story. Just Basham joins us now spokesperson for Mike Madigan speaker of the house morning. Jessica. Good morning. Thanks for coming on bashing, by the way. I don't wanna miss pronounce your name. That is correct. Thank you. Thanks for being on. I wanna talk to you about the speaker in a second. But first, let's jump right to it. Here. What is the speaker able to do? Now, the Democrats are running everything that we couldn't get done before. Well, thank you so much for the question. And I think if anything has showed us the path moving forward, it is that people are frustrated with the lack of bipartisanship, and a lack of cooperation that we've seen over the last four years and during the speakers inaugural address, I think he really focused on what people do want to see that's bipartisanship, that's people working with people to find a common ground and to really start working on the state's challenges a couple of those important challenges that were excited to focus on right away is a balanced budget and the capital infrastructure Bill, by the way. Yeah. I think that we are going to be working with the new administration and our colleagues across the aisle to start working on those initiatives right away. Obviously we've been challenge with these things for a number of years. There's been a lot of discussion about the capital infrastructure Bill. And I think the new governor has been very clear about wanting to achieve a balanced budget. What's a realistic time line because we know we need this. Right. We know we need roads we need bridges. We know we need better. Transportation pathways and safe and all of those things. So what's a realistic time line to get this done? Well, the speakers been working very hard on creating a diverse leadership team here in the House Democratic caucus. We've got half of our team a females and half peop- are minorities. So I think that diversity is going to bring a lot of good conversation to try to get these initiatives done as quickly as possible. We'll be working with our Republican colleagues to try to achieve those goals as soon as we can we we don't really know what time when Jessica. You know, I have a question because the speaker has been speaker of the house for a number of years, including years that had democrat governors as well as Pat Quinn, and in that time, there has been a lot of discord in the Democratic Party, the governor wanting a certain things and the house and the state legislature not giving it so how can we from from history from recent memory? Sort of predict how the relationship between the governor. And the speaker is going to be starting the session. Well, as I said, I think we've learned a lot over the last four years about what the people of Illinois wanna see. And it's it's cooperation it's about working together and finding that common ground. The speaker was very focused in his recent speech on our inauguration today about working together to to to work towards fixing the challenges. Thank everybody knows that the probably the number one issue. The state is our fiscal challenges. So that's got to be priority number one. But again that capital infrastructure Bill is something that's been really behind in in getting done over the last several years. So I think you're gonna see a lot of focus especially on those two initiative. So as we go forward here if constituents of the speaker want to get a hold of them they can see him in the neighborhood. But the speaker answers to everybody in the state as pokes 'person how do people express their opinions on things directly to the speaker since he has not made up. Himself accessible to me or anybody else for that matter. Well, and just to clarify my role as chief of staff. Speaker booking him. But I'm saying how do people how do people estate there, there positives negatives to the speaker? How do you get a hold of sure, you know, what the best way is to reach out to their local representatives because those representatives are going to be key towards the speakers efforts and the efforts of the caucus as I've said we've got a very diverse leadership team. And I think they're going to be excellent in communicating issues to the speaker that all of the representatives of the general assembly put for governor Pritzker made it a campaign promise to talk about legalizing marijuana where does the speaker standard edition? Well, I think that that's something that is really going to get a lot of consideration. Over the next next weeks and months, obviously, there is a desire by many people to take a look at the issue. I think it's going to be a complicated issue by members of our pockets are have already done a lot of work on trying to move this issue forward, and we look forward to working with our Republican colleagues to to see this happen. Jessica, thank you. I appreciate you coming on. And please express to the speaker. He's always welcome here. Thank you very much for your time. Nice lady did a nice job. And didn't say a thing. This is what people are sick of and. This is the part that makes my head explode. Again, a considerable messy. You don't wanna clean up all political answers. Nothing was answered directly. The Democrats have all the control in the state. It's now on you to fix it, so fix it. Well, I'll be interested to see, you know, Pat Brady was in here during the who who boiled it down a lot times of saying. Well, if you want to for Jay Pritzker vote for a tax increase. There's a lot of talk about the capital Bill. There's talking about balancing the budget a lot of what governor rounder. Stood for and why we had a budget impasse for as many years is that he would not accept a tax increase. So the Democrats continued to bring the budget back with tax increase or bringing the income tax back. So it'll be very interesting to see if the speaker and all the things that need to be done to find revenue what he does. And how he does it. Because the the the first thing can't be we have a capital Bill and your taxes have been raised. They just can't do that. I'm going to be political. And this this is not Jessica's fault. You can't not know what the time line is those discussions go on all day long. Here's the realistic. Here's the unrealistic that type of thing is known, and those are the answers the people of the state deserve. And that's what we're not getting. And by the way. Yeah. Talk to your local elected reps and tell them to talk to Mike Madigan. Here's the problem. When all the Democrats fall in line on ninety nine to one is sheep to follow Mike Madigan because they feel they need to. Your message isn't getting the Mike Madigan until Mike Madigan steps up and his brave enough to answer questions in a regular basis. The way the mayor has the way the last governor did in the way every other elected politician makes herself accessible for you're not gonna get any answers. And that is the number one problem with Mike matting. Why not answer the question about, you know, just gloss past the idea that Mike Madigan to act like an in DC, you have McConnell and Trump or have Pelosi and Obama they they walk in step you either walk in Mike Madigan step or you don't and you had to Lear's Blagojevich and Quinn who had very public clashes with their own speaker of the house will that happen again. Once Jay Pritzker says, you know what I don't wanna tax increase. I want to legalize marijuana. And I have not yet heard from the speaker of the house where he stands on legalizing Maryland. That's another answer that's readily available in ought to be able to be said out loud. Now. Listen, I agree with what Jessica said. And that people want bipartisan communication and cooperation until I see Jay Pritzker disagreed publicly and regularly with Mike Madigan about things that matter and have discussions about the same. I'm not going to believe it's happening and governor governor Pritzker hasn't been on either governor Pritzker, you have an open ended invitation as well. As is there a chance. So she just took over that position in September something September October that she's still immersing herself in. I'm not banging on her. She's doing her job. Maybe it hasn't been revealed to near generic answers in the very critical when you talk about bipartisanship in the state of Illinois when the house Senate and governor's mansion are all Democrats. I'll bet Republicans Republican leaders and also Republican voters who are listening to this right now just kind of rolled off and fell off the bed. There's nothing bipartisan about this state. There's no there's no reason for Mike Madigan right now politically to reach across the aisle. They have superman they're they're set the real friction in the state government's going to be between the governor and the speaker in the same party. Yeah. Or you know, what you're on the clock. Do something. It's time for Steve to say this Steve coming up you and probably gonna talk more about this. The best picture nominees are Justin Black Panther black klansman bohemian rhapsody, the favourite green book Brahma a star is born and vice those nominees for best picture. "Can provide a various levels of financial support tied to one's ability to pay in some cases, you know through. They have fun. We could somebody could access the money to do the lead pipe replacement, and they could in effect pay for the cost of that replacement over a period of five six seven maybe as long as ten years. So the objective here is to create a fund that will provide the money needed to actually. Due lead type type replacement, and I recommended and I recommend and it's going to be part of my legislative agenda that we see that money that we've seen that fund with with by allocating, a percentage the developer fees to this neighborhood this neighborhood environmental protection fund, and that we would also we will also earmark a portion of our of our growth in Texas. Groom finance you rub news for this fun. And I've also recommended and it's going to be part of my legislative agenda. Now, they have to print the now now with the governor governor Pritzker in office that we make it a priority that we end the diversion of corporate personal property replacement tax revenues that are supposed to go to local governments. But the state has been skimming about three hundred million dollars of the money. That is allocated the local governments to last. Four or five years that we that we worked to get that that that money restored. That is money that's supposed to go to counties and municipalities Chicago ball historically, received one hundred million dollars at about one hundred million dollars has been diverted from the city and the schools, and and the ending of that diversion will give us a digital money that we could then use to see they're fun. So what we would now have for the first time in the city is an environmental neighbouring environmental protection fund that could naturally help own a home owners and landlords finance lead pipe replacements. They finance that the type of remediation to get let out to get mall address, the issue of malls. Or for that matter lead paint houses, you know, it. It's just not only letting the water. It's also it, you know, it's also lead pain. It's also lead in the air. You're ingesting lead in many homes that. That have not been repainted. Then who's there are let contaminants in the homes that needs to be addressed too. So the idea here will to create a permanent conservation fund that would provide environment protection fund that would provide a homeowners with the investments that they need to their homes and to make their apartment village ver-, mentally, Schick, safe and secure. Commend to Chicago and says they are trying to sort through all of these candidates. Whatever is some of the ways that you think people should be thinking through who they like to vote for. I think we should go to the website and see what they're proposing. I mean, I've gone to some of the websites. And I were I mean, there are strong on slogans and they're short details. You know, for example at the city club. That's the goal. I presented. A number candidates have presented at the city club. I presented a plan on how I'm going to balance the budget address the pension funding issue as well as other city long-term financial obligations and at the same time structure budget that will enable us to cap local property taxes now for one year like daily has talked about doing but permanently. So what I've done what I did. In on. My website is lay out what my strategy would be totally out of five year financial plan that what ineffective a loss to meet our pension obligations number one number two allow us to make the type of investments in the community. So that we could strengthen our our. Are public safety resources. So that we could invest in in in areas in communities that have have have long been the glutted..
