"Potentially the Friday morning commute Right now 20 downtown 18 in Leesburg 8 and manassas and currently in the raids 10° All right thanks Ryan 6 41 7 school boards in Virginia have filed a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of new governor Glenn young's executive order making masks optional in schools Mark and Debbie went deeper on this with Stephen farnsworth Professor of political science at the university of Mary Washington The lawsuit offered up by school boards in Northern Virginia and elsewhere makes the argument that the governor's executive order does not control this process Rather it's controlled by the constitution of Virginia which gives school boards authority to make these decisions And it's controlled by a law that was passed by the legislature and signed by the previous governor that does say that the CDC guidance should be followed And so they argument basically is that the governor's executive order falls in contrast to more stronger decisions by the legislature by the governor previously and of course by the constitution of Virginia Ultimately we're going to need judges to sort this out And could this be a lengthy process which means there could be quite a bit of confusion in some school districts and for parents and students As you've been reporting there is some disagreement in terms of people parents outside school boards and school districts There's no doubt about it This is going to have to be resolved relatively quickly And until it's resolved there will be this confusion because ultimately in our divided political times people hear what they want to hear And so if you support the governor's approach then you're going to think that that's what the decision should be If you're going to support the yes mask movement by school boards and parents and some of the suburban districts and Northern Virginia then you're going to think that's what it should be But ultimately these decisions have to be handled by the judges They have to be handled by the courts And that's why we're waiting for a word from a judge somewhere about an injunction or hearings on this That's Stephen farnsworth Professor of political science at the university of Mary Washington on Skype It's 6 43 The following is a paid commercial message This is bishop Michael burbidge of the Catholic diocese of Arlington one of the confounding puzzles of life is our impatience Whether it is our need to be first in line frustration while waiting for a stoplight that.

opinions worldwide team of editors and columnists I'm Jim grosso Coming up on the show addressing America's issues with food insecurity and how retirees are spending but first and social media fix its misinformation problem That's the headline of Bloomberg opinion columnist parmi Olsen's recent column She spoke with a lead researcher about some of the world's most pressing issues in technology like stopping anti vax campaigns and fake online conspiracy theories Renee diresta start by telling us who she is Rene Descartes is the technical director of the Stanford Internet observatory And she's beyond that title has become pretty well known in public policy discussions about social media She's pretty widely followed on Twitter and in the media She writes a lot of opinion pieces and research papers And she's just very busy putting out a lot of data about how misinformation has spread across social media platforms and also how content is manipulated She played a pretty big role in giving testimony to congressional leaders about how Russia manipulated the 2016 election through the Internet Let's talk about what the tech companies have done Have any of their efforts been very effective When it comes to misinformation it's really been hit and miss Facebook has tried hiring fact checkers Twitter's probably its most effective approach has been just to introduce friction into sharing things So in the past you could just retweet anything you wanted at will Now if you see a article that someone has tweeted there's a little pop up that comes up that says do you want to just read this before you retweet it And the goal is to make sure that people are using critical thinking before they start sharing and resharing the post that could go dangerously viral You can say that this has been solved the problem necessarily It definitely doesn't seem to have solved the problem a lot of these conspiracy theories like QAnon and flatterers and the January 6th interaction is a case in point even though that would be a year ago many people still believe that the election was actually should have gone to Donald Trump I don't think that problem has been solved by the tech companies And so more has to be done How that works in practice is there's a couple of different ways of trying to fix that but regulators are working on and we'll have to see how those play out over the next couple of years You talk to duress about the UK's upcoming online safety lot Tell us about that and whether she thinks it might be more effective than current efforts That's actually my own view is that the online safety law which has been proposed here in the UK it could be effective And primarily that's because it's just coming out so quickly I think it's going to be one of the first real laws trying to regulate social media coming out in the west There is a similar law in the works of going through Brussels that the European Commission is working on but that's essentially a couple of years out Congress is looking at something like well over two dozen bills trying to fix problems in social media With congressional gridlock being what it is.

I-95 Closure in Virginia Ends After Hours of Driver Despair

"Help, I 95 is reopening in Virginia. After the winners storm, I think we all know senator Tim kaine spent 27 hours in his car because of the United States senator, we are focused on what happened, but imagine having four kids in a station wagon. The fetching message he was up late last night, reading horror stories of parents with children one ambulance driver was kind enough to let four freezing kids. They were turning on and off their cars, sleeping an ambulance on gurneys. That'll be a memorable experience. How you can not get organized. This is Ralph northam, Virginia Department of Transportation yesterday. The funniest thing about Twitter were that the morons on Twitter were blaming governor elect Glen young for the Virginia Department of Transportation and aptitude in failing to plan and execute any kind of a close the highway keep people off of it order, which is what they should have done. Just close the eye, keep people off of it until it's plowed. Ohio turned pipes been doing that for years. So Glenn young can just can't get there soon enough. And the national reviews Dominic Pinot wrote a story late last night why I 95 in Virginia is jammed. And it comes down to the Virginia Department of Transportation, lack of preparation, inability to execute and general ineptitude. And this has been 8 years of democratic management. So what did you expect? The Commonwealth used to work when governor George Allen was there. And now governor Glenn young is going to have to bring in an entire new group of managers infused some private sector know how and knowledge. In an era of weather forecasting, if it says 7 inches, then you plan on 14. That's what you do. If your parameters are going to be safe, it's always easier to say, oh, so we missed. And that's what happens with hurricane season. People prepare, then it misses, and that's
