Reparations for Black Californians could top $800 billion
"It could cost California more than $800 billion in reparations to compensate black residents, according to economists, advising the state. Those potential reparations for harm caused by policing and housing discrimination are more than 2.5 times California's annual budget. The state reparations task force will review the numbers at a meeting today. California governor Gavin Newsom signed legislation creating the panel in 2020. It has until July 1st to submit recommendations on how the state can atone for its role in perpetuating damage done by slavery. New California gas price law another defeat for oil industry
"California governor Gavin Newsom has signed a new law that could penalize oil companies for profiting too much. I'm Ben Thomas with the latest. The law comes as a response to the gasoline price spike last summer that saw record high pump prices, while oil companies made enormous profit, though the industry couldn't stop the legislation, its presence could be felt in the final version. The governor initially called for a new tax on oil company profits, but revised that to a penalty if profits passed a certain threshold in the final version the decision is punted to a 5 person panel appointed by the governor with the consent of the state Senate, the bill also creates a new state agency with the power to monitor petroleum markets, including requiring oil companies to disclose lots of data about their pricing. It's the latest in a string of legislative defeats for the oil industry, California was once one of the leading oil producers in the United States. Today, a separate California law requires the state to be carbon neutral by 2045. California also plans to ban the sale of most new gas powered cars by 2035. I'm Ben Thomas

California lawmakers OK potential fines for high gas prices
"California lawmakers are breaking new ground with a new law that would punish fuel companies for price gouging at the pump. This state assemblies passed a bill that will empower state regulators to punish oil companies if they try to profit from price spikes. California is always at higher prices than the rest of the country. Because of fuel regulations, but state officials say it doesn't explain why last summer. The cost of a gallon was $6 and 44 cents. More than two and a half dollars higher than the national average. Now a new agency will monitor and investigate the petroleum market and be able to subpoena oil company executives for information and determine if there should be a penalty for excessive profits. Governor Gavin Newsom is applauding the measure, which he helped push through the legislature. I'm Jackie Quinn

After three years of little rain or snow, California has been hit with about 12 powerful storms since December, governor Gavin Newsom is lowering the number of water use restrictions from 81 to 33. We're eliminating that 15% voluntary requirement or voluntary conservation target. The U.S. drought monitor says most of California is no longer in a drought. Since then, however, nearly all pandemic restrictions have been lifted and the state's coronavirus emergency declaration officially ends at the end of this month, while that does not have an impact on the California department of public health, the department says it's not currently exploring emergency rule making to add COVID-19 to the list of required school vaccinations. What Is Governor Gavin Newsom's Wife's Angle in the Weinstein Trial?
"There's an interesting development in the Harvey Weinstein case having to do with California governor Gavin Newsom's wife, Jennifer seibel Newsom, she's going to be among the women to testify at his LA sex crimes trial. And the trial for Weinstein, who is, as you know, is serving a 23 year sentence right now for rape and sexual assault in New York. Just got underway Monday. And 5 of his accusers are expected to take the stand, including unfortunately for him, California's First Lady. And she said, look, like many of the women, I'm sorry, her lawyer said like many other women, my client was sexually assaulted by Harvey Weinstein at a purported business meeting that turned out to be a trap. Her lawyer Elizabeth feigen said she intends to testify at his trial in order to seek some measure of justice for survivors and as part of her life's work to improve the lives of women, please respect her choice to not discuss this matter outside the courtroom. Let me just say something about that. As part of her life's work to improve the lives of women, okay. There was a time when Rose McGowan was on the warpath and was going after Harvey Weinstein something awful, and she got a phone call one night. From Gavin Newsom's wife and his wife, more or less said to Rose McGowan, how much is it gonna cause for you not to continue to do this? And rose was like, what? How much is it going to go? Rose never met her? Didn't know really who she was? And she didn't know there was Gavin Newsom's wife, but then when it all passed, she said, can you believe the governor of California's wife tried to get me to pull back and not go forward with this thing? So this woman, Jennifer seibel, Newsom is a really creepy piece of work. Getting back to Jennifer seibel Newsom and Rose McGowan, it's a very weird situation because rose is not a liar. Everything she said from the beginning of 2017 up until a few months ago has been all deemed true. I'm trying to figure out why Seidel Newsom would try to silence Rose McGowan about Harvey Weinstein if she's also one of the women who claims to have been sexually assaulted by Weinstein.

We don't know his motive. But there are reports coming out that he had reportedly incidents of domestic violence that his former girlfriends of were concerned that he could pose a threat to others. And I guess the question people are asking is how does someone like that? Get access to a gun that literally in a few seconds? Can kill numerous people change a community's life change a family's life. It is appalling and you know, I've been in Congress for five years, and we still have not passed meaningful gun legislation and people really are frustrated. They want to see action. And and in that vein, Congressman we look today and the Associated Press is reporting. This is the 15th Mass killing just this year and 2021 86 people have died and these In in these mass events, all of them shootings. And this compares to 106 people who died in all of 2020 Aziz. You say it just keeps happening. What Or what do the American people to take away from this? Today. I'm hopeful that the president can break throw. He is someone who has deep empathy. Hey, speaks to the broad range of Americans He served as you know, in the Senate for Over 30 years we've passed in the house some very common sense legislation. It simply says, have a background check. If you're a law abiding citizen, you can use your guns. But don't put a gun in the hands of someone who has allegedly committed domestic violence. Don't put a gun in the hands of someone who is going to go. Kill people at a workplace. I don't understand why this is so complicated. 80% of the American people support it. I think what's changed is we have now a president who is capable of getting the Senate to move a night. I really hope that will happen. And what do you know? Congressman about the gun laws in California that might have made a difference in this incident. Well, Judy. We have some of the strictest gun laws. But I think one of the unanswered questions is why we're the red flag laws not invoked in this case, and we need to get more details where the domestic violence charges that they rise to the level that red flag laws should have been invoked. Why was there not more intervention? Why was there not more intervention in terms of Mental health counseling on an intervention in this person's life who clearly had issues. I mean, someone doesn't just get up one day and snap and decide to kill dozens of people trying to kill dozens of people. This is something that has been building up and there was not intervention and we have to understand why. And we heard Governor Gavin Newsom, who was there, speaking at the news conference just in ours, So go say, we don't want this event to be just another Shooting and they just keep happening and keep happening. We want it to mean something. But how does that happen? Because these these events just keep repeating themselves. I think we have to look at the specifics in this case and then see what California can do. So are there areas that we need to strengthen red flag laws so that there could have been intervention to take this person's weapon away when there were warning signs. The second thing is worth is there enough in terms of mental health counseling, and we'll re sources were available to the Vita. And finally, we need to honor. I think the families at the Vita Vita workers in Silicon Valley too often they're invisible. Their contribution isn't recognized today. They're really grieving, and it was supposed to be a day of celebration. They finally had rides returning to normal after the pandemic, and now it's one of the worst days in their life. And you know it. This is not politics and I've reached out the people there. They're shocked. They're devastated. They're never going to forget this. And it's just sad that this is happening and work places in this country. Terrible on sad. And as you say it was supposed to be a very different kind of a day. Congressman Ro Khanna. Thank you very much, and again, our condolences to the entire community. Thank you, Judy..

"Coordinators. And they only need 1.5 million valid signatures. The 1.3 million means that they're probably gonna have to hit two million because you know, certain number of signatures are not going to be valid. Two million signatures would basically qualify this recall, you'd be assured of getting the 1.5 million valid signatures in that mix. So 700,000 signatures left to collect and we have about 6.5 weeks left March. 17th is the deadline so at recall Gavin 2020 dot Com Recall Gavin 2020 dot com is where you can download the petition form. Sign it, collect more and send it back. Now, Here's how the recall candidate process works. Um, recall election will have two items on the ballot and only to the first item will be should we recall Governor Gavin Newsom? Yes, no. So if you fill in the yes bubble, and 50%, or more of Californians say yes. Newsome is fired. If people Decide to go with the No side. No. Do not recall Gavin Newsom. Then he retains his job. And it doesn't matter the second question on the ballot that doesn't matter. Now we have to fill out the ballot the same time. So you vote yes or no first and then you have to select one candidate to vote for to replace him. Unlike in a regular election. It's only 50. It's not 50% plus one. It's whoever gets the most votes and with more than 100, or 200 candidates that potentially will be on the ballot. Yeah, you might get a candidate who only wins 30% of the vote and wins the governorship in the process, so Democrats are likely to get behind Only one Named Democrat as a quote safety candidate, a replacement candidate. But on the Republican side, there may be a number of candidates that run. They're also maybe some independent candidates who've got a lot of money. So, for example, Kevin Faulkner says he's looking at running. I can tell you right now he would be the worst candidate. You can check out Maura at Faulkner failures dot org's more on that website in a bit. Falconer failures that award Kevin Faulkner yesterday said I've raised a lot of money $500,000, and that seems like a lot of money, right. But it's only from seven donors. You want to talk about someone bought and paid for by the establishment? That is an embarrassment to sit there and say I've got $500,000. Well. Wow. That must be thousands of donors. Nope. Seven donors, uh, husbands and wives that basically, you know, you know, seven couples, seven families. This is almost as embarrassing as Gavin Newsom and Queen Nancy and the Golden Families of California on the Democrat side. Come on, folks. There's also an oddball candidate that just got in the race. Silicon Valley billionaire Shama Polly Ha Pattaya. He says that he's new to politics, but he's got a multi billion dollar fortune from being a venture capitalist and s social media innovator. He was on CNBC last night announcing his candidacy. Here's audio one. I think Gavin Newsom has done a terrible job. I think that people are leaving in droves. The crime is really high. Our education outcomes are the worst of any state. Our taxes are the highest of any state. Our air quality is the worst of any state. And so this is a state that I think it's just so absolutely incredible. Right now is being run off the rails and to the extent that we can recall him, and to the extent that my agenda which I just tweeted out and explain, resonates with people. Zero state taxes a minimum teacher salary of 70 K. Rule vouchers so that you have school choice. 2000 bucks for every kid born in California. I think you would see a renaissance in California. That would be Gloria. I looked at his website. He's got a little Santa Claus list of all sorts of goodies. He says he wants to give out what Tiger took talk. Grab. My attention was the 0% state tax on income. Kind of like that. However, however, he's out there talking about climate change and $2000 for every child born in California and getting rid of student loan debt. That stuff is kind of big government. How you gonna pay for that? One thing I do like is free school choice of school vouchers. That's a pretty good thing. Here's the Here's the point. With all of these candidates getting in, particularly with like Faulkner trying to pretend to be a Republican, you're likely going to have a lot of votes split up. And it could become such a mess that Newsome might say. Well, look, stick with me. Just give me a little bit more time. That's why this recall process could be pretty difficult. And that's why I'm putting out the call, and many others were putting out the call for better candidates. We need Principled. Conservative, reliable Uh, leaders in our state. You get together, and we got to get behind a candidate who we can be proud of a candidate who's not going to be a phony or a liberal like Kevin Faulconer. Or this guy here might have billions of dollars. But you look at this Website. I don't know. Some of this stuff seems conservative. But other stuff here is just wack a doodle. So a billionaire announcing last night That he's going to run for governor. We certainly could use his money in qualifying for the recall. If you're really interested in saving California, Mr Palihapitiya, maybe a couple checks over to the recall committee to help us get these final 700,000 signatures. Would be Much appreciate it. A lot of these guys want to just coast. They just want to pretend like they support the recall, but they'll certainly step up. An opportunist. Opportunistic way if a recall qualifies so Our challenge. How do we get a good candidate? That we all can get behind. And how do we keep our eye on spoiler Candidates like this Silicon Valley billionaire And Liberal Week Republicans. Like Kevin Faulconer. Coming up. You know his name? He was the Republican candidate for governor in 2018. John Cox. We're gonna ask him. Would you be willing to run again? That's coming up on the day my report. First traffic. In San Francisco while she is in Sacramento. The capital of California, of course, is Katie or from KQED. Hi, Katie, Like Welcome to the program. Brian. Thanks for having me and I see you've been covering protests at the capital that is the state Capitol in Sacramento. Was there anything like we saw in Washington at the state level today? You know, I think Initially people were worried that there was going to be something that mimicked what we saw in D. C in Sacramento. But that turned out not to be the case. I got to downtown Sacramento around 11 o'clock. There were a couple 100 people there at a rally in support of President Donald Trump. There were also members of the cult right group, The proud boys standing around and there looked like there might be some altercations between you know people from this rally and counter protesters. It was a heavy, heavy police presence. The police were in there right here, but after about two hours, it kind of fizzled out and it started to rain on D California. We don't love the rain or not so used to it and people kind of went home and the whole thing died out. Which I think is pretty fortunate, because we've seen these riots losing these rallies the past couple weeks in Sacramento, and they have turned violent on occasion. Katie. I'm curious, given the state of the pandemic in California, but also pushed back there is in so many places about some of the restrictions on behavior and the mask. Uh, mandate or encourage meant to use masks. Do you see those two things as kind of overlapping and Merging into one sort of amorphous protest group. Yes, There has been a lot of frustration. I think particularly on the right with Governor Gavin Newsom here. We've had a lot of business. It is being shut down for a while. You know, churches were supposed to be shut down. Schools largely are still not operating, and people are getting more and more frustrated with that. There have been protests against what we call the stay at home order that much of the state is under right now. I believe Gosh, about 95% of the population is under the stay at home order, and, um, so there is. There is also a a strong effort underway to collect signatures. Or a possible recall of governor Gavin Newsom. So, as you say, I think we're seeing a lot of these forces combined and you know, be promoted at rallies such as this one. It is become sort of this. Amorphous cause. People are just some people in California are just extremely upset with the way the government is being run. Right now, the California government is being run. Thank you Reduce Katie or in Sacramento. Thank you for charming in You're welcome. Roy and middle effects. New Jersey You're on America. Are we ready? Hi, Roy. Hi, Brian. How you doing? I Enjoy your show, and I'm enjoying this discussion. But I have to say that While Mitch McConnell is to be applauded for taking, taking a stance against delusional thinking and for bringing out a lot of what the right has done to bring on the division in this country. However. What I'd like to ask the panel is how much is the left or how much are they willing to acknowledge that the left is responsible for a lot of the division in this country because there is a perception and there is a push by a lot of extremist elements of the left. It's basically going out and saying that white straight and male equals bad where as color female and gay equals good, and I think that that divisive perception is being created. And I think also that when you have somebody like Donald Trump and in the White House Part of what made him so dangerous. Was the imperial ization of the executive branch That's been going on since Roosevelt. Okay, that the left is largely responsible for that Nixon is certainly responsible for to name someone on the right just for balance. And you know, I've heard these things done on NPR. I've heard it done on this show, and I can give an example. And Brian, I'm sorry to say I've heard it done on your show, which I do enjoy and find very educational. Although a zoo libertarian, I really don't agree with a lot of what I hear on it. So, uh, And I think that that's part of the problem is that ah lot of people. I'm not tooting my own horn. But a lot of people, unlike myself, are not willing to listen to people who don't Say things they agree with, but I don't think that's exclusively the province of the right. I think there's a lot of that on the left as well. Maria Hinojosa. Would you like to take that? Um, yeah, I don't know, I guess. You know, having Children taken from their parents and put in cages. Might be. You know, too, too radical, too. Lefty to be upset about Um, And that's where I'm just like, See, I don't I don't I don't get with that. Because what is radical right now, sir? With all due respect, and I would love Sit down and speak with you because one of my roles and jobs As somebody who chose to become an American citizen because I was not born in this country and as a journalist is to dialogue. But this notion that we need to kind of calm down or and by the way, I don't identify. I mean, you know, I might critical everywhere. OK s O the left or the right. But But this notion that somehow let's say Thinking about Children in cages or George boy being murdered and then saying, you know, defund the police is just a little bit too radical. No, sir. I'm Brian what California officials Wanna ramp up delivery of the cove in 19 Vaccine, Governor Gavin Newsom says fewer doses than expected have arrived in the state, and so far just about 35% of those shots have been given Gone too slowly. I know for many of us all of us. I think we want to see 100% of what's received immediately administered in people's arms. Vaccinations are underway for people living and working in hundreds of nursing homes across California, the state opted into the federal pharmacy program, so employees with CVS and Walgreens are administering the vaccine at nursing homes. You call Howl Heads a nonprofit in the Bay Area that advocates for residents of long term care facilities, she says. These places have been feeling fatigued after several months of responding to the pandemic. We're building the airplane while we're flying it so facility are trying to adapt. The new normal are trying to deliver great care. Well, they're also trying to deploy a vaccine clinic in a situation that they've never been in before, and that could be challenging. For more on the covert vaccine in nursing homes were joined by Dr Mehrdad Hockey. He's a professor of medicine at Stanford and serves as medical adviser to several nursing homes in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. Doctor Good Morning. Good morning. Thank you for having me. Do you share this concern for the rollout of the vaccine in nursing homes? I agree. One off. The main reason is that majority off the residents and still nursing home. There are away from their families, and they get me information through the social media, and the news is well. And they're all having concerned about the safety off this vaccination. This speed off the emergency authorization off this vaccination as well and this is going to be a difficult challenge for all of us. And again the speed off the development off this vaccines or not, they're not escaping any important safety of steps. I actually both vaccines that currently is going to be starting to administer this week and long term facility. They're both actually, as a result off the very focus, collaborative work. And performed by expert across the war. And actually, all this vaccines are tested in thousands of people, even in older adults and geriatric population. That means both of vaccines are safe and our job is educating, reassure them reassure the families as well that this vaccines will be effective in this population. And is there some hesitancy among staff? I want to go back to Nicole Howl, the ombudsman for Bay Area long term care facilities.
