"Countless thousands of lives during covert. It's the reason that a state that has otherwise unhealthy and we're gonNA work on that. Has Lost. Far fewer people than than most other states it wasn't just the right thing to do when the moral thing to do is one of the most important steps taken in the past to protect people now for that I'm grateful. I'm grateful that he was. He was governor I'm grateful that he did it and part of how I'm doing trying to manage this virus Iowa. THANKS TO TO MY DAD Now, I was one of the Attorney General's at the time. That filed suit to protect the affordable care act before care act is so critical and the current decision out of I. Think it was the fifth. Circuit. Would eviscerate. Not just protections for. Pre existing conditions. A prohibition on Discrimination Against Women and seniors. But it would also end in expanded Medicaid in my state. That's hundreds of thousands of people. More, than five hundred, thousand that have health care for the first time. Bastogne that that are getting healthier that give us a better shot at life and many of which are alive that might not have been. During Cova it is unfathomable. That That form of health care about things that we all agree on could be eliminated and we just can't let that happen the affordable care act was so critical in making sure that even a family like mine we seem healthy but three out of four myself preexisting conditions can secure affordable healthcare and they're so much. We can do to build on it here in Kentucky we have really big plans that are only growing. We're going re star state exchange that's going to save US almost twelve to fifteen million dollars a year, and we think we're going to be able to provide more options. In it the affordable care act and set up a system. That's perfect. Nobody ever thought that it would. We thought that would be able to make positive changes in it. The congress haven't been willing to look at, but it is a system that I can work with to maximize healthcare opportunities for Kentuckians to drink. So what happens if there's an unfavorable favorable ruling what what what options you have well, here in Kentucky, we're going to have to look at first of all putting that the State Law and I've tried to put a lot of those protections into state law, but there aren't great.

"When you think about the impacted is virus on people obviously for some people. It's physical. It's it's a loss of life for some people. It's mental and emotional some people estrangement from their family for some people it's a loss of business they built for many years and so because everybody does see it differently and you live in a state with very diverse, not just political views but also this the content urban-rural race, etc, which you're talking about is an old fashioned notion of asking people to sacrifice for one another to look out for one another can we do that? Are we able to do that? Well. We can and we have and I think that we will. What we have to make sure is that people can get real information and real facts and one of the toughest challenges out there is pushing back against misinformation or I. Think we've entered a period of rationalization where person X. really wants to do something but the fact that they shouldn't do it, and so they start arguing with the facts are trying to recalculate the number of cases. But what we won't ever get to is perfection and I think we get and I get really focused on those not following the rules and doing what's right and we lose focus of the vast majority of people. Doing what's right every single day not getting tired and putting in the the work I do think that we still care about each other I think that if this wasn't an election year in many instances, we'd see. Even better results. But you're right. How much we care about each other isn't an urban or a rural value and shouldn't be a democrat or a Republican value. It's just supposed to be a personal value that we all share and so I think as governor, my job is to keep providing the information day in and day out. To knock down the misperceptions or misinformation but then also to try to make sure I'm leading with compassion. And caring. Recognizing the lost recognizing the anxiety. We all feel because that's also part of it..

"We're so sorry as a nation for this loss but I know you are very sorry as a family for this loss and we're thinking about you to. That so often gets lost the personal grief. And you know. Maybe we'll come back to talk a little bit about the impact of that loss politically. But I agree with you that my objective was just to reflect on her and I appreciate you helping us to do that. Let's talk about Kentucky, there's no easy winds here. These are series of tough decisions. So maybe just start with how they're doing. How Is Kentucky Holding up these days. What are you feeling? Well Kentucky is doing better than than most certainly when we saw what we saw in. March and April when there was a potential for a very dangerous escalation that could overrun our healthcare system Kentucky came together in a very special way and and at that time crushed the curve we were dealing with. We made sure that we protect it other Kentuckians and we prove the initial models wrong. But this virus in going away. Doesn't care if we get tired and what we have seen is that there have been different times along the way that we've seen escalations and we've had to respond and kind, and where we are today is more cases than I'd ever liked to see for just the second day. In our experience in this, on Saturday, we had over one thousand cases. I don't WanNa see that. Again, we've lost over a thousand Kentuckians and will lose more people to Cova than we lost either in the Vietnam War or the Korean War, and so the way that I view this is we are at war. It's just with a very different opponent and our civic duty. Our patriotic duty as Americans is to do what it takes to protect one another. But this virus is so different in that it tests our humanity. And it tests our resolve. It tests our humanity in that for most people. If you. If you don't wear masks, you're probably not gonNA feel the harm. But somebody that you've never met their body might not be able to take it, and so it truly tests are we willing to be our brother and sisters keeper? Are we willing to love our neighbor as ourselves if it causes some discomfort? Are we willing to change our lives change our economy for a short period of time if it means more of our friends and neighbors are going to be here with us afterwards and Kentucky. I think we've passed this test better than than most we have seen states to our south go through devastating increases whether it's Florida Alabama south. Carolina. Arizona and Texas, and we all know that when you have huge case increases the deaths follow and we don't want to see that in Kentucky we're Kinda right on that line and we've had to push back and push back and while we have lost more people than I would've ever ever anticipated in. Challenge while I was governor. I'm no I know it could be much worse and we Kentucky and you know this. Unfortunately one of the more on healthy states out there number one two or three and diabetes heart disease and lung cancer those conditions that covert comes for..

"Up Andy. Testing audio aren't. As. Perfect. On put a jacket on now if you're record me and. The shirtsleeves looking Andy. When they say Andy How are we supposed to respond? I'm GONNA I'm. GonNa call you governor. And I'll call you professor. Yeah. You call me whatever you want I. Really appreciate you joining with all yet going on I thought maybe appropriate way for us to start was maybe talk a little bit about Ruth Bader Ginsburg given the you know this is going to be put up on Wednesday I. Think we are all reeling from this. You were the attorney general for your the governor. Can you help us process the loss of Justice Ginsburg? Any reflections have well justice GINSBURG was an absolute titan in the legal community and I think for our nation as a whole she led not only with a superior intellect and wit. But also true compassion and to see someone. Or to lose someone that contributed in. So many ways from legal prowess the way she wrote her opinions to also some of the causes that she championed the example that she is set not just for women, but for men and not just for lawyers but four Americans very special. Person who gave countless years of service we're GonNa truly miss her and I hope that her legacy doesn't just get caught up in everything that's going on afterwards. It's important when we lose somebody like this that we take a little time to talk about the amazing additions brought to the world and also remember she's got a family to we're all just human beings and there are people that are truly missing her. That's a great point and I think she's going to lie in state in the Capitol. I believe this week, which is an incredibly well deserved honor. Especially, if you think about what she pioneered early in her career as a young lawyer. And Afar that women came in and just what it tells people as possible to do whether it's young girls whether it's anybody who feels like they're facing a set of insurmountable challenges. But I remember when as a college senior I think met Sandra Day. O'connor and listening to her life story. We, see a lot of the same in Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and others in that. There's a big world out there that you can make an impact in every time somebody like justice GINSBURG. Achieves what she'd achieved while also not losing her humanity. Shows you that that the most important? Muscles that we have our our hearts and certainly the most important gift we have been given by goddess, our ability to think and into reason, and I think she showed people that being powerful isn't about being physically big. It's about being strong in so many different ways and. She's really special and has provided such a special example for so many people and I think people found strengthen her no matter what they're dealing with took on cancer how many times and one it just a real powerful special individual and I want to if I can say to her family..

"Kentucky. Seems to have a handle. The Corona virus and the loves has to do with Governor anti-bush as steady-handed the wheel. His efforts have made him. The subject of lighthearted Internet means that serve the rare bright spot in these troubled times. I'm Roger Chang. The daily charge with me is cultural reporter. Aaron Carson a native Kentucky and author of this Fascinating Story. Tell me this facebook group. Andy share means for social. Distancing teams to this page has about two hundred thousand followers. So far and it's basically home to all of these adoring memes about Andy Bashir and they pull on everything from catchphrases that he's accidentally coined to even fictional trade offers from other states who were willing to hand over their most prized possessions. In return for Bashir. It's just back things up like let's let's give our listeners with their background. Check Kentucky's a little bit about Kentucky and how you know what it's doing to kind of flat curve and why there's so much love for share race so a Governor. Bashir has gotten a lot of partisan praise for acting very quickly Before things seemed all that dire here so he declared a state of emergency right after Kentucky got its first confirmed case. He's asked your has worship to shut down schools. Non Essential Businesses A of the moves that early on you saw in other bigger cities and states He's also banned honesty travel. And so what we're seeing about a month in is that it looks like Kentucky's curve is flattening somewhat are starting to and when you kind of you know look at these graphs that compare Kentucky other states it is it is flatter Of course there's still a lot of unknowns knowing who's taking a victory lap just yet but to kind of give you an example in his press briefing. Last night. He was talking about how last week. We had several days in a row where we had about one hundred new cases every day and that number his falling back down to fifty so there. Some cautious optimism. That states efforts with social distancing and whatnot might actually work that. We've had a number of governors Come into the limelight with how they've responded to this pandemic oversee here New York Andrew. Cuomo his his really seen his popularity and his approval ratings rise in the way he's dealt with things but it's interesting with government shared because it's like it's taking. The depreciation has taken the form of Internet. Memes talk about some other means like what are some of the things we're seeing. What exactly are they? Poking Fun of arrived the content of means draw from these daily press briefings that he gives every day at five pm. Eastern and so you know for example. I think I mentioned that. He has accidentally coin. Some cash freezes so whenever he's trying to admonish People are businesses who are not following protocol. He says in his very light Kentucky draw like we can't be doing that and he also has some helpers in these conferences. He has a woman in Virginia sign. Language interpreter. Who's getting a little bit of viral fame herself? The person who runs his audiovisual presentations. Name is Kenneth in McKinley. Bashir has to kind of prompt Kenneth for the next slide. So at this point you can actually get a t shirt says next. Slide Kenneth so but part of I think you know what's going on here is that Bashir is pretty new office. He was only elected in November and suffer many Kentucky Inns this is like their first big exposure to Bashir and the way that the Internet is interpreting him is that he's this really calm figure with these young dad vibes. Who is going to Shepherd Kentucky through this crisis? Yeah let me tell you what some of the means. I don't know it's hard. This is an audio podcast. So it's hard to describe visual means but If you could do your best like what exactly are they doing like the What some of the popular themes or transpose seems sure okay so For example a lot of people have taken take maybe like a screen shot from a music video of a song that has some type of content that has to do with gathering or touching so for example. You know the Beatles Ed Sullivan Performance of one. Hold your hand so you have a you know a photo that the text i WanNa hold your hand in below it you'll have a federal Bashir saying we can't be doing that So so that's one of the things Another mean that was kind of funny is so in in a Lotta these briefings. He implores viewers to repeat after him. We're GONNA get through this. We're GONNA get through this together. So so one mean had a basically a photo of him from his press conference with that checks in below it is. There's this there's this cat this white cat who you run into sometimes on the Internet. Who kind of looks like he's tearing up. And so it showed that the label me responding to Bishop very being very very calming another one. This is maybe a little bit. Easier to describe. Was a screen shot from the Disney plus show the Middle Laurean Laurean labeled as a governor Bashir and baby Yoda as Kentuckians. An idea there is. He's he's being very protective and taking all of these young members of the state and kind of under his wing. Yes it's just it's interesting. How means of come into their own as the sort of Remedy psychological ready for us. This time like we had abroarall hedy on to talk about how General Internet means have has a therapeutic aspect to this is this is kind of inaugural that right right exactly and it kind of fits with the vibes that Bashir's trying to set forth like when he opens his press briefings. He doesn't dive in to kind of you know scary numbers about new cases and deaths and whatnot. He tries to talk about people doing positive things in the community and you know living their lives as as close normal that can and so. I think that some of the vibe of of this page kind of carries off of that and so you run into these means that are a lot. More good natured. And there's also moderators for the page inside. They're also kind of keeping an eye out to make sure that you don't get anything intensely political or offensive or or anything like that And you know what they say in their description of the pages is like this is supposed to be wholesome because we kinda need that right now. No that's great. It's a kind of a a rarity to see something so white hardened so wholesome especially on the Internet because the Internet is known for just the most terrible things and yeah. I noticed that the moderates were very proactive about banning comments about You know tying core Virus Asians for instance And so it's interesting to see like that. There are folks who actually care enough about this to actively monitor this community exactly. Yeah and they've you know when you go to actually join the page. You have to agree that you're going to adhere by these community guidelines. So you know I think they really want to drive home the point that this is supposed to be something that is lighthearted and good natured and There to kind of be maybe a bright spot near day in the midst of a lot that can be unsettling unnerving and unknown decimal. And right now we could all use as much light hearted humor as we can get so. We had a question coming in regarding our Friday episode on dish and the Spaghetti Bowl verger Elizardo wanted. Know what this has of boost is now. The dish is about takeover. Take a listen. I got a question so we'll be boost mobile under dish network or world were happened to the people that have moved smuggle. Thank you now. This is a question from our previous episode. On Friday. We've talked about dish. As a potential fourth wireless carrier now digital be running boost ask wires reseller which means will be leasing capacity F. A. SPRINT. So really if you are a boost mobile customer now fiction change in the short term in the near longer term dish could use boost as a platform for its five network. Orca role at different service plans potentially even cheaper service plans so I keep an eye out on what Boosts doing dish basically right now? It's just different management but over the same network seemed service that you have right now and that wraps things up could check out. Aaron STORY ON GOVERNOR BASHIR DOT COM.
