The city correction Department says the rising rates or because more inmates are affiliated with gangs are accused of violent felonies. It has come to Gotham City. The actor who's playing Batman and next movie, Robert Pattinson has covert 19. So the film production for that shut down, others struggling to get off the ground and keep everybody healthy right now, though, the last heat wave to hit California in mid August Cause several waves of rolling blackouts in different parts of the state. This time around, temperatures are expected to be far, far hotter. And once again grid operators are warning of the potential for more blackouts. The rhetoric. Lynch is a regulatory attorney and former president of the California Public Utilities Commission. Welcome back by the way, um So let me see if I could. I get confused easily. So let's see if I if I get this from the message I'm getting from the power folks. It's kind of like, Ah, it's going to be really hot to you've got to conserve if you conserve There shouldn't be any rolling blackouts unless there are rolling blackouts. In which case then you're conserving didn't do anything but we won't have the blackout so long as you conserve. What am I supposed to do? Hey, Charles and Mike. Thanks for having me Look, the ISO is scaring Californians needlessly. It's always a good idea to conserve energy. It helps your wallet. It helps the environment and Californians need to stay cool and hydrated. At high temperatures do not always equal high electricity demand. The ozone own numbers show it Saturday's peak demand tomorrow tops out at less than 46,000 megawatts. Which is well within our average summer demand. Why? Because it's the weekend so factories in office buildings or dark and not airconditioned, and that largely offsets increased home use. So the big problem here is the so the grid operator can't seem to keep the lights on during an average hot summer demand day because it's the weekend and the attorney general should investigate. Why? Yeah, well, what do you think we can keep the lights on. We should be able to It's It's a big state. We've got money. Absolutely Yes, it's hot, but their only job is to keep the lights on. So they should do their job, especially when it's actually not that much demand. Because it's the weekend. So when these things happen on DH forgive me being cynical, but I always think someone is trying to grease their pockets with something. Like money is that what's happened here is somebody trying to make a lot of money at the expense of the people who live in California. That's exactly what I think is happening. The grid operator can only pay exorbitant amounts for power. If there's an emergency called so they call an emergency and they pay the power marketeers. Whatever they want. Let's put it in context. Today, California has over 25% power in reserve. We're not going to even get to 40,000 megawatts. We've got 49,000 power 49,000 megawatts of power already bought Most other states keep their lights on with a 7% reserve. So we are over buying and overbuilding. Because the ISO doesn't know how to do their job, like other states do so what could be done about that? I remember the last time we did this to governor came out, he said. I'll take the hit for this one. You know things happen. But I'm gonna make sure there's more power and we're going to be super detailed about it and everyone's going to know exactly what's going on, which may be if I poke around the Internet and I got all these websites. I can see what's going on, or I just if I'm you know, irregular Californian listening in the car right now. I just hear flex alert, like okay, inflexible. And it's always a good idea to conserve right. It'll save you money if you conservatives better for the environment, But the problem here is the CO is scaring us. Pushing the governor to call an emergency so that they can pay the market here is more for power. But we don't have an emergency. The numbers show it. The problem is that I also doesn't know how to do their job. And the attorney general should investigate the Esso and find out why, because we shouldn't have to pay more, and we shouldn't have to suffer because of their incompetence. It is. They say, This is deja vu all over again. Because this is what happened back What 20 years ago or so with the Enron scandal? Why're we going down down that road again? Well, that's the really scary issue 20 years ago, the energy seller's like Enron manipulated California market and held US hostage until we paid whatever they asked. I at the PUC fixed that I made a deal with the federal government to put protections on California's market. The problem here is we're seeing some of the same behaviour that we saw 20 years ago where the power sellers withhold their power until the also calls for an emergency. Which means they can pay whatever the power sellers want to sell that and I also need to stop that behavior, Nip it in the bud and stop scaring California. They need to fix their market. They need to run their grid. They need to keep the lights on. It's not rocket science. Do we have enough for all this? Not to happen is that seems to be what you're saying. They just need to run it better because there's all these arguments of okay. We didn't do a lot of long term planning. It's good to go green and put up a solar fields. But, you know, we didn't think that the sun would go down. Although we could've seen that coming cause it happens every night. Or maybe we turned off the nuclear plants too soon. We could have used them at a time like this. No, The numbers really show that what's happening here? We bought. California bought 49,000 megawatts of power for.

"I might be too hard on David Brown, but my patience is wearing so thin. I mean, they're not doing their job, they're just not. They're overseeing an entire city where there are hundreds and hundreds of black people that are shooting hundreds and hundreds of other black people every single summer. He said this I pledged to pursue these offenders to the fullest extent of the law. Heavy police presence will continue throughout the downtown area today until further notice I i. guess that sounds all right. But why now while the sun now tough guy. The city's done. Chicago is gone. If you live in Chicago, get out as quickly as you possibly can. This will not get better. It won't this will turn into some form of a dystopia. In Gotham city, it will not turn around because Democrats are continually in control. This isn't a protest about justice. By the way. This isn't poor people looking for money to feed their family. This is lawlessness. This is widespread chaos. So, let's play a clip of David Brown talking to reporters frankly sounding sensible. But I'm a little. I'm tougher on David Brown than most conservatives because I've seen, the Chicago police be completely inactivated for. So long during the riots and during the are sending some of its political, some of it is just because the police do not want to go in a certain neighborhoods and they've not taken responsibility for what they're supposed to do play tape. It almost sounds as though you're saying this is. The reason we have is. The courts and the prosecutors were not doing their job that they were going to easy on the loose from the last time around him. Take it from me. Just go by what's been done. But just go about what's been done. There was there were no consequences for the people arrested. But now let's play the absolute disgrace to America. We've got teams of people that are aggressively out there identifying the people responsible looking at the plates and we're going to bring them to justice. But when we do and we do make those arrests are expectation as if this is going to be treated with a level of seriousness that it should be period, don't try to Betas mischaracterized pit one against the other. "Of film that did really hot though that would be joker and it is polarizing films of the year it is true a love it or hate it type of film and I'm finding myself on the ladder side of that Ledger I went into this folks expecting that it's going to be where the best films of the year and I couldn't wait for it and I love the fact that clearly taught phelps is paying them is to score says and had said that taxi driver in comedy ric huge references and reference points for him but as I tweeted in my review I said tops pays homage and Aaron Charles is a good guys a loyal listener the podcast he immediately corrected me the tweets that have paid them is it's a derivative I'm like that's true tops is no Martin Scorsese he's making taxi driver King Comedy Without the Intelligence in the witch and the subtlety now the story is supposed to be this forever alone in a crowd failed comedian Arthur fleck seeks connections he walks the streets of Gotham city Arthur wars to masks the one he pays for his day job as a clown and the guys he x any futile attempt to feel like he's part of the world around him isolated bullied and disregarded by society flack begins a slow descent into madness as he transformed into the criminal mastermind known as the joker sounds great but it's not the first thirty minutes or so I enjoyed because I could appreciate Lawrence share the director of photography clearly again paying monster Scorsese's taxi driver literally adult movie theater they show in the early minutes you see the garbage piling up feels like they're trying to evoke the taxi driver of the seventies but you know taxi driver even though it's a very dark film and it's an urban nightmare there's still moments of Levity Q. Albert Brooks who is hilarious in the movie documents stool pigeons there's still romance you know when score says he was feted by the Afi with a lifetime achievement award Julia Roberts introduced a clip and it's a wonderful clip where Travis has I picking up betsy and it shows you know for a guy who doesn't always get a claim for having a playful touch it's a really sweet scene and the way that Travis picks her up he says you know I think it was beautiful whoa ever seen and he says when he's going to pick her up and she'll be on time and I'm sure you will and it's a really nice scene and your member of the fact that Travis has a Mohawk and ends up gunning down a bunch of thugs moments like that and it's you know there's a glimmer of upside there's none of that era joker it is a relentlessly bleak thoroughly unpleasant film experience you know comedy has great humor in the movie I mean it's a really funny movie within the fact that Rupert Pumpkin is a guy who is a very painful isolated self-loathing character but it's still really funny I mean the fact he's so obsessed with Jerry Lewis talk show hosts that eventually feels compelled to kidnap him there's a dark undercurrent always but there's some big time lapse in the way that rupert is just so delusional in this film though there's none of that I mean it is just a painful experience it's about as subtle as a sledgehammer to the Groin and even though Joaquin Phoenix is getting Oscar buzz and and I do is an excellent actor I think the performance owes a little bit to his character into the master Kinda feel like it's a you know he's almost Pankaj to that character and listen he's a talented guy it's also always performance at the Oscars love I mean they love these showy flamboyant performances he's got a bunch of ticks the over laughing it's very flamboyant it's not today it's bad acting is pointing out that the Oscars love this kind of stuff so I don't even know if he deserves a best actor nomination but I can guarantee you we'll get nominated for one and he's certainly an intense actor and gave it two and a half maple leafs that was right after the movie the more I've thought about it I'm giving it only two maple leafs like I said it's just too derivative and just to pleasurable of film experience and there's obviously but other conversations about it people are mentioning is it a commentary mental illness and the fact that mentally ill people are being ignored is it a film it's inciting violence a natural born killers which I thought a lot actually watching them which I think is an excellent movie and I liked a lot Owen gleiberman right favourite film critics he championed natural born killers and unfortunately for me he's actually repeating jokers well though he next article which he said everyone is very polarized by being the was polarize similar decades said people either loving or hating it made a ton of money doc tober opening ever in terms of rotten tomatoes in this won best picture at the Venice Film Festival the Golden Line which means it could be an Oscar contender but even a good article from hr it's got fiber he was saying that some voters have said I don't know whether to give it every Oscar or to give it a Razzie like that's that's exactly the way we're looking at with this film because is so polarizing and people are just walking out there arguing about immediately in terms of rotten tomatoes sixty percent is the average above that is above average below that is below average Chris only sixty nine percent but audiences liked it they gave it a ninety percent so ultimately it was not a film for me it's not a film I would recommend Joe I don't know if you saw it but the floor is yours what say you I and I was Gonna go see it until you told me just how bleak and pleasurable it was and I was GonNa see last night and I thought I don't really need to if it's just GonNa be that dark I'm sure walking Phoenix is really really good in it but if it's just someone falling down a staircase in slow motion for two hours I'm just like I I got my the baseball team to do that I don't need to watch that in the cinema for two hours absolutely right you I mean there's just nothing as I said you think of a dark movie you love this year's big movie lovers I'm that there's still moments of levity there are still moments of light amidst the darkness and the comedy of the film is making this isn't that this is just Oh he's laughed at ridiculed he punched he finally acts out his violent urges and feel some sort of release and that causes them to do more. I mean it's just like you said Joe I the project and just watch your twins I wouldn't recommend the film too many

I mean we have all commented on how their output has been inconsistent can we all agree at best putting it nicely right that they have not had the scene unless nece that the Marvel Universe has been able to bestow on all of their works when I heard they were doing a one off joker movie I was like that sounds like a bad idea story are you getting those marvel paycheck saying they're in free fall I mean wonder woman made one of a billion dollars off man made a billion dollars what kind of free was that will somebody say well I don't care what the hardcore people think the truth of the matter is a lot of their movies have stone DOC and they've not consistent the fact that we have a one of joker movie this joker that we're told will never appear with Batman what the hell are they doing marvel would never do that is what I guess I would say sure but I don't mind that like what is the best spider man film Spiderman entered the spider verse like that is not connection to the m. c. you or what Sony is doing with Tom Allen's spider manoeuvres etta any of that so I don't mind a one off if you can just pull off a good movie I don't care if it's in any kind of continuity villain standalone movies making a Superhero movie without a superhero has not been something I've thought has worked before I mean Holly Aries cat-woman Tom Hardy thinom they could never figure out how to do sinister of six I mean you could even probably throw the Star Wars prequels into that concept having the super villain story told without a counterpoint of heroism where's our entry point who are we supposed to be with and what are they going to accomplish the you mentioned marvel I think that DC here is taking a cue from Marvel's newest acquisition Fox Todd Phillips talked about how it took a lot of convincing at Warner Brothers to let him do an R. rated joker movie but that was the only thing he was pitching and he's literally hearing responses from Warner brothers like we sell joker pajamas at target what are you going to do to our character that might hurt Pyjama sales and look at the roads that deadpool paved and I think even more specifically logan going more dramatic and being R. rated you can't beat marveled by playing Marvin those game the way you beat marvelous by making your own Fox did that and nobody is even see new mutants because nobody knows what to do with it again the X. Men horror movie yeah they've experimented sometimes those experiments have been successful I'm just saying approaching this project hearing the we're going to do a one off film about the region of joker seemed like a waste of time I was not excited about this movie at all until I saw the trailer Yeah Al admit I mean after seeing what happened to jared Leto in jokers role in suicide squad. We'll see at that movie he doesn't think he was in that movie enough he's got a scene it was not overly excited to see what they would do with joker now what I will say is somewhere at this very moment jared Leto has pissed Yeah Joaquin Phoenix get attached this because that's what I would have gotten excited you know he's one of those actors like Tom Hardy who's like a Nicholas cage who is just going to make some decisions and go with them they could be czar. They could be captivating like that trailer yeah they really tapped into Martin Scorsese in that taxi driver field but I was even more excited about Joaquin Phoenix playing this role and should be pointed out he is the man that would be doctor strange he has quartered comic book movies before and walked away saying this is not really for me why do this one he was also offered the role of Bruce Banner the reason he didn't do them he didn't WanNa sign multi picture contracts he didn't want to do what Chris Evans and Robert Downey junior did where the next seven years of your life you're working basically as a day player for marvel here it's a one picture deal and the ways they got him on board for this one it was Todd Phillips again Joaquin was connected from the very beginning and the Pitch Phillips gave him is we're going to make a real movie but we're going to get warner brothers to fifty million dollars for it by calling it fucking joker yeah how did Todd Phillips and doing this because I've seen a lot of his films old cool that hangover trilogy these are not things that I associate with a Gritty New York Scorsese style film you saying that and coach when I look at this filmography I hadn't seen most of what he meant. Yeah they're bad comedies well he makes kind of comedy I don't patronize the I'm not ever interested in watching skin hutch that's just not something I'm going to see I did see war dogs which I actually thought it was a little underrated I thought it was pretty good it's okay yeah kind of fell apart at the end yeah thought it was decent as well and it was four dogs that actually got this happening as he was at an early screening of war dogs with Warner brothers and realize is is exact phrase was war dogs wasn't going to set the world on fire as so he started talking to Warner about what could we make that's going to really get attention and do a little bit more be a little more provocative look way down on his resume his first film and you might actually see why he really got the Gig I was doc I didn't realize I had always heard about this documentary about the punk icon singer G- yeah I did not know top Phillips did that I have seen it ooh those are some live performances you wanna be careful with he strips down throws a species tough stuff to watch yeah I watched the movie I was like Oh I've always wanted to see it this gives me an lent reason it may be the closest of all his films to joker it begins with an actual endorsement from John Wayne Gay see another killer clown so yeah brutal I don't know that I'm telling people I recommend that experience be prepared I don't say this lightly it is very punishing it is very hard set is provocative and ways a lot of people probably want appreciate but you can't see a director who's very much trying to confront a freak entertainer and I do think at a core G G Allen and joker are two sides of the same coin so I would be interested to see a guy that came from punk rock bring a punk rock aesthetic to of joker movie if we must Gotcha Joker Origin Story. I WanNa say though I'm hesitant because I mean I always liked the way Keith Ledger played it how did I get my scars there's a danger and telling US definitively how joker came to exist right. There's something about the mystery we want to leave I've always liked the mystery the funny thing and you can go back to books and Nachos where in our talks about the killing joke written by Alan Moore the joker says I always change my story but here's the version I'm going to tell of my own gin and they tell an origin story and then just as origin story we're just GonNa make that the real thing but yeah I've always preferred him to be like Batman rewritten so obsessed with origin Martha Thomas Wayne Getting Killed and the pearls and walking out Zora all of that that has been told so many times joker being the opposite of Batman I liked that you just this mysterious chaotic clown figure that comes out of nowhere yeah I've definitely was thinking the killing joke when watching this and how it took elements of that in that Comic Book Joker was a failed stand up comedian who was kind of down on his luck in a rundown older Gotham city but I came in I think we might be seeing virtually and adaptation of the killing joke minus all the Batman stuff no they definitely go in a different direction with this but it gave them a good starting point and joker said he likes his origin story to be multiple choice. DC is having both ways they're gonNa make their continuity multiple choice switch movies do you want and continuity go ahead that's weird for me that we're seeing something that I should not think of as a comic book movies essentially what they're telling me don't worry I'll have nothing to do with Zam Aquaman wonder woman and all of that I mean did they even have that DC logo they have that old school Warner Brothers logo show up no DC logo okay and yet I mean it's not just your average comic book movies this movie's doing bigger than a lot of films I mean it's opening bigger than the average thor film it's maybe not topped here it's not spiderman but I'm not really it's no atman though it's beaten that man right yeah this is going to have a ninety million joining in the US. The biggest October release of all time is it Halloween in the mood for something kind of scary after it we want another killer oh but it's shocking to me the box office for what essentially feels a little art film is so huge and that it's rated R. You can't get teenagers in which is where marvel makes its money is they are aiming specifically at thirteen to seventeen year old market with their PG thirteen films and yes adults can like it in younger kids can like it but they're keeping that content for a rated R. Film in an error where in my experience it's much harder for young people to get into a rated R. Film that it made this much money is shocking to me I expected it to do well I didn't expect it to break venoms record

"A movie that has had a lot of advanced publicity in a scary negative kind of way. but you were here yesterday you did say that I hinted at what to review is going to be that I read in the Chicago sun times today sometimes that calm thank you that can. and you really liked it but it is a very strong film it's always interesting to see when there's a certain movies that transcend the you know what they call film Twitter and the eel movie fans and get everybody involved in discussion and cable news channels and everybody else is talking about it long articles are written all before it comes out I actually saw somebody a film critic it from another market the other day say feels like the joker's already come and gone because we've been talking about it so much I'm like okay you know get out for once we get the ivory tower they get out from a that's ridiculous the average movie fan even they think most dedicated movie fans it's only the week of movie comes out that they really start getting into it so there's all this talk about the joker it doesn't inspire violence as a glorified violence are we going to see outbreaks of violence in theaters I mean first of all we all know that we have the you know the horrific shooting in the R. Aurora Colorado movie theater during the show a string of dark knight movie by a guy who was it twisted depraved cycle path right that was inspired by the movie or you know or motivated by the movie to to to to to read that kind of havoc for awhile there we were hearing about all hip hop movies back in the day those are going to go have people fighting it writing all that's of the very few isolated incidents of violence at movie theaters is almost never had anything to do with the movie playing. and in terms of violent acts were movies are cited well five hundred books six thousand songs two hundred video games and eight million manifestos and some politicians of it also cited as being contributing factors so that all being said I don't see the joker all being any kind of glorification of this character or even making him an anti hero he's a villain and it's a it's grounded the joker this version is grounded in our authentic world all of the dark knight movies as opposed to very stylized superhero movies type that we see that we love it's rated R. for a reason it's set in the nineteen eighties early nineteen eighties of Gotham City but that's a city is never been more New York City than it is in this movie from the way it looks to the streets to the fact that it's a city on the brink with a garbage strike and there's tabloids kind of driving the media that the time doubling newspapers a particular were and and talk radio and you know things like that because we have the internet and into this world is one Arthur flak who is the Joaquin Phoenix character that is his real name is Arthur flak he lives with his mom he's probably thoroughly thirties he's been in and out of institutions is on six different kinds of medications his job is working for the most low rent clown rental firm you've ever seen in your life I mean which is just kind of perfect in a horrible and sad so it's a bunch of guys like him even among these misfit outcast he's a misfit outcast where they weren't about to let you know flipped the sign in front of the electronic store that's closing or go to a birthday party and he can't even hack that job he gets fired because he brings a gun to a children's hospital is pastor I guess off your routines so this is the origins story out of the joker that we go on to see ask that man was is based on a comic book version was the order was a yeah there was one strain of us stories about Arthur flak that were that were at the rivet there was this place is an original screenplay but but that's the name of the guy and and you know. one of the interesting things about this film is it takes place also the Gotham City where Arthur Wayne famous billionaire is considering a run for mayor his son Bruce Wayne is eight years old Ole that's all I'm gonna say about the appearance of those characters in that plot line in this movie Joaquin Phoenix is amazing he does a crazy and other means that we I. I get it but the the movie with that plays into the origin story Batman to I'm assuming that rendition sellers so yes and and Arthur flex mother in this movie worked for weeded Destry is years and years earlier and has some certain theories about what's happening well know it so it all ties together so walking Phoenix plays this character very much like a de Niro in taxi driver it has a king of comedy element because he's got a fixation he wants to be a stand up comic even though he's the least funny person ever he wants to be a stand up comic it is his goal is to be on the very Franklin show which is a Johnny Carson asked national talk show that that's live in New York and Robert De Niro plays the Johnny Carson ask talk show hosts the have run hero whose two of his most famous movies are being referenced in this film taxi driver of course can a comedy okay calmly Robert deniro was Republican the Stocker right in this movie he's the talk show host that the joker wants to get to know and appear on the show. so that all kind of ties in the movies much closer lowered tone I would say to taxi driver king of comedy than a typical superhero movie the violence when it happens is very you know realistically gory bloody and close up and individualistic it's not super horrible regional billion people die but it's not a PD thirty long shots here it's done very very you know close ups medium shots reaction shots you know blood splattering everywhere bases. not really so is it really is kind of it yeah much like taxi driver yeah the eve the violence of the streets is more like somebody who might or might not be the joker has been accused of killing three jerks on the subway shades of the Bernie Getz subway last killings and some people in the Gotham City now think the tech as a hero because he killed three yuppies and they deserve it I want percent should go down that's the kind of political side of this do you feel for the characters not I would see you feel form you you real you see some things that happened to him that contribute to him being who he is. thank you know the fact that he definitely has a mental rise he's on all these medications the city social services get caught so now he's not gonna get his medication is not gonna get to see a therapist all of those things we see something from his past. but that's the kind of stuff you see about almost every serial killer in every movie whether fictional one or it's a show like mine hunters that talks about real ones I mean Hannibal Lecter probably didn't have the best childhood I'm guessing how many guests that to go with that but it's more it's more tone of those types of movies and TV shows then any kind and there certainly are never a moment some of the people in the movie may come to worship the joker character or admire him because they're equally depraved but those are the people in the movie that's evil watching the movie so as a watch as a as a movie then if you go to this movie and his cat basically understand that it's the origin story the joker yeah are you going to enjoy it. that's up to the person what they feel about the joker I would say that after my long deep dive into all the controversy and and the intricacies it's a very strong film done very dark tones about a depraved killer but that you've got you do have the element for the comic book fans of sand I recognize that thing from you see will usually wore even his look it's interesting to see how his wardrobe and his choice of clothes change and evolve through the course of the movie seen some of the trailers were at the end. of the movie of the trailer he looks a lot more or at least dress is a lot more like the colorful joker of Jack Nicholson is heading into a new Batman series I don't think so this is a standalone separate well it's it's it's like a lot of it's like let's see what happens. it really does it does it certainly doesn't ended type everything that could possibly happen in that particular Gotham City even at that particular time or you could certainly flash forward. two twenty years later so it now would you see this moving toward a. an origin story for all of the different I mean you see a penguin origin story no I don't I don't think so I I think you should look at this as the standalone film about a character who's been a lot of on going you know has been a part of war or the half century but I think you should look at as a standalone movie of standalone origin story it's interesting because all the joker's we've seen. but when they don't like Jack Nicholson you know that version he actually becomes the joker he falls into a vat of green acid that particular telling of the story but he's not the joker at the beginning of the story. in most of them the joker's already the joker when heath ledger make you know who still I still say that performances is you know maybe the greatest of all time he wanted in a posthumous Lee that kind of an award for his first appearance in that movie he's the joker right now all ready with the make up and the stars say I who'd now the speechifying at the sole use of. that way so serious you know we don't see the young joker before it becomes a joke on that film here you see Arthur flak right I don't get into the store has no interest in becoming any kind of super villain or painted clown or anything he's just a sad guy what is the plan for Batman at the moment I have no idea I mean the planters movies yeah they're gonna do another movie but again but. and we will yeah we just got back woman just as just come out of the TV series because Batman finally I think they did some of that here in Chicago actually wells I know Robert Pattinson's been named as the next Batman if you know of when DC mounts this what I mean the letter of the given out the DC universe is continually can kick continually looking to start all over again because every time they've done it is not working the justice league didn't really work when I got everybody together even though some of those characters have done pretty okay the.

The Joker premiere causing some to fear safety

"The new film joker is a rage filled origin story starring Joaquin Phoenix as Batman's most famous nemesis it opens tomorrow but there's some screenings beginning today security has been heightened at many theaters across the country because of fear related to the Aurora movie theater shooting in twenty twelve which is at a showing of the Batman film the dark knight I feel critic Justin Chang has this review of joker joker is only just now opening in theaters but it already seems to have exhausted its potential for hype and controversy you may have heard that it won the prestigious top prize at the Venice Film Festival and that its star Joaquin Phoenix is a likely academy award nominee for his astounding physical transformation. you may also have heard that the movie is much more realistic and disturbing than the average comic book adaptation and that summer anxious that its protagonist a lonely white male misfit who starts killing people may incite real life acts of violence you can't blame people for feeling anxious in a country where mass shootings happen every week but while joker is far from a major artistic triumph it's not an irresponsible glorification either it gazes with both terror and pity on Arthur Flack who's played by Phoenix as the saddest sack in all of Gotham City it's nineteen eighty one and he's working as a clown for hire he aspires to become a stand up comedian even though nothing about him or his life is remotely funny he lives with his mother in a cramped apartment and we learned that he once spent some time in a mental hospital he suffers from a rare condition that causes him to burst out in noisy uncontrollable spasms of laughter. he meets regularly with the social worker who has some on several different antidepressants into one day she tells him that the city is cutting funding

Is Joker a 'Dangerous' Movie? Director Todd Phillips Responds to Critics

"Director Todd Phillips Take on the jokers starring Joaquin Phoenix is bringing bringing up a now familiar conversation what is Hollywood's role when it comes to gun violence and how should the industry respond to concerns about excessive violence in film NTV Brent Lang is executive editor for film immediate variety and he wrote about why the families of the twenty twelve Aurora theater shooting are concerned about joker oh car. Hey Brent Hi John can you I set up a little bit of the premise of joker and how violence is part of its story sure so joker is is an origin story and it it takes a look at this man who's a mentally disturbed man living with his kind of crazy mother and a very rundown rundown part of the city and he has kind of aspirations of being a stand up comic and you know without giving too much away those those dreams don't come to pass and instead he kind of gradually loses touch with reality and a lot of violence ensues and but as part of that he kind of inspires this anarchic uprising in Gotham city and it is it is a very violent very bloody very R a-rated comic book adaptation so how much of the premise or the violence is behind the families of the Aurora shooting victims to write this letter and Dan share their concerns well as far as I can tell the families of the Aurora shooting victims have not seen the film they're they're reacting to kind live coverage of the pitcher and and they say that you know when their letter they say that that they've heard that it presents the character as a as a protagonist with a sympathetic origin origin story and and that gave them pause and they're they're very clear though they're they're not asking Warner Brothers to not release the movie they say that they support the right to free speech and free expression but then they also sort of take a page out of Spiderman and say with with great power comes great responsibility so they're using this film to Urge Warner Brothers and its parent company Warner Media and I suppose at and T. as an extension extension to become more involved in the issue of gun reform and they're asking for the company to support of certain in sort of specific means of of social engagement they're asking them to end political contributions to candidates who who take money from the NRA they're asking them to used their their clout and their platform to pressure Congress to act for gun reform and they're also asking them to help fund survivor funds and and gun violence intervention programs and it seems like the conversation around joker is part of a broader conversation around violence in Hollywood your or editor in chief. Claudia eller wrote an op Ed for variety around the time that blunt house productions film the hunt was dropped by universal pictures. The headline on that piece is why it's time for Hollywood to reconsider the amount of violence on screen so even if the families from Aurora are not really asking Warner Brothers to limit the violence that is in their movies it does feel like these things are starting to percolate up and there might might be a bigger conversation. That's either about to happen or is already happening. Absolutely I mean I think that that this is a conversation that that's been happening for a while. It's interesting I talked to someone named Igor Volk Street and he runs an organization called guns down America and he helped craft this letter and I actually asked him sort of specifically if they were implying that that there was a connection between onscreen violence and and and gun violence and he was very careful and he said actually science doesn't back that up and that that they aren't contending that but just because he thinks that it doesn't mean that other people don't and I think it's a debate that's going to continue through the release of joker and onto the release of other violent movies that Hollywood backs. I WANNA play a a little bit of what Joker Director Todd Phillips and star Joaquin Phoenix said about this issue in an interview with the website jeon. There have been a lot of pieces written by people people who proudly state they haven't even seen the movie and they don't need to. I would just argue that you might want to watch the movie you might want to watch it with an open mind. The movie make statements about lack of love childhood trauma lack of compassion in the world and I think people can handle that message. It's it's it's uncomfortable. It's uncomfortable for for all of us. I think we all are aware of these issues and we are concerned. I think that's why we talk about it I. I don't think that we can be afraid to talk about it so they're offering this defense but it feels like this debate is probably GonNa get a lot more interesting really soon around movies like this absolutely and as you mentioned it already existed around the hunt now I will just say that as somebody. I'm not a critic but I did see joker and I can't say that I thought that it had a lot of profound things to say about violence in America or what what what Spurs people to violent action I didn't think that that anything there was was terribly deep to me it sort of played like a riff on Scorsese films like taxi driver or King of comedy movies that had a little more depth but that's my personal opinion and is it possible Zabol that this whole debate could affect the way the film has received might have some consequences. I think it definitely could it could have consequences on the box office. If people you know have safety concerns of some kind I it could have consequences on its awards chances because joker is being positioned as an awards play by Warner brothers Joaquin Phoenix who stars as the title character's was received a great deal of claim but if the film becomes too controversial potentially not that that kills its its Oscar chances so there's a lot of impact financially critically in in terms of awards Brent Lang is is the executive editor for film and Media at Variety Joker opens in theaters October fourth brand. Thanks much for coming back on the show. Thanks for having me.

"Class growing don't come back for like a week it's fine number three one student said I remember one day at school I claim to have accidentally cut off my own pinky toe when the teacher asked me about it I showed them my bandaged foot with cranberry juice poured on part of it and they sent me home. well far into that lie yeah that's a lab yeah number two a high schooler said I once sign myself out of school in the middle of the day because I really just didn't want to be there and in the excuse box I said Gotham City needs me. the principal apparently thought it was so funny that they actually let them get away with it. I reward that kid to. yes yes Gotham City doesn't. that's that's obviously very funny you can go ahead and take the day off and the number one most creative excuse that any kid has used to skip school this year a sixth grader wrote once I really did not want to go to school so I woke up early in the morning I got my hands dirty with the sole of my shoe and rub my eyes with them my right eye turned bright red so I told my dad I had pinkeye and since it's contagious they let me miss school and even though I looked better the next morning they kept me home one extra day just to be safe. little faking of the pink guy. also. as the best it's like the best of us because. I used to use pink eye all the time to get out of school I would like close it and say they will all it hurt really bad it is I I think it's pink eye because I did have pink eye a few times so I would just use and there they don't want you going anywhere. do they just go go you room to shut the door don't come out until that eyes better video games all day and they're not.

"I don't live in Gotham city and think about I mean, there are so many situations in a day starting from the first choice you make where you avoid all kinds of scenarios because of a fear of getting hurt. You're not even conscious of all the things you avoid every day because you're afraid of getting hurt. I mean, I guess I could I could step out of a moving car. If I saw somebody yelling at his girlfriend in front of a club. Right. That kind of thing. Well, yeah. But also like you don't in the fight right there. If you see some guy fall out of a car and roll over and hit a brick wall. And then he gets up and he's like, hey bothering you. Hey, why don't you be nicer to your girlfriend? Hey, hey, buddy. I think you're using while you're swears while you're the yourself. But buddies wealth is not one that anyone would choose. I I don't think I wanted and that's why it's a fictional trope. Because you see these people who were like they've apparently never seen anybody. Swap comedies, right. Right. Because none of them are like, oh, this is like a freaky Friday thing. Well, what kid would ever say? I wish my mom could just be inside my body for a day. She that show her. The funny thing is a completely arbitrary device that we know will never happen. No scientific basis for it. I mean, the bodies while comedy the soul transference presume, some kind of cartesian dualist, right? Where your mind your consciousness exists out with your body, and it can just get mapped onto any other body with no difficulties, and that's that was very appealing in the seventeenth century. But I think today we know that your consciousness intrinsically in the nerves of your head, and you couldn't just drop your conscious into someone else's brain. And they would be you'd have to physically transplant the brain which never happens in these movies. Nobody ever gets their heads sawed off, but it fit. Well. No, that's true. But unless I'm missing some part of I never saw the Disney channel Shelley long Gaby Hoffmann head transplant that transplant off. At some. They're both weirdly stitched on sewing thread. No. But is that? I mean, it seems like it is kind of written into reincarnation that your soul would insult form cleansed of memory, but the same soul, the memory, but son, how you're you. Yeah. You're you, and you would transfer from body to body, but in other in other religious traditions is there any instance, where the I mean, even if you don't believe in if you just believe that your spirit is going to survive your body. Right. I mean that does somehow imply that, but it never is lead. It's not transferrable to. I mean, got it. No point puts you in someone else. It's book of job like scenario got on the devil, or like, you know, what would be funny Shelley long as very up tight executive, and she does not get along with her daughter. Yeah. It's the soul survives the body. But they're only a few places it can go. It can go to heaven or you can go to. Well, yes, it can't just like wonder the earth. The clearly it's not just an effect of how it feels to have a bunch of neurons firing because it can survive the neurons stopping right? Even in most western religious traditions in my tradition. Mormonism the sole actually predates the body. We all lived before we came here as well. So clearly that's something that can come get imposed on a head somehow, and then leave again, we'll also you can I mean, you're in the after world you are affected by things that are happening on earth. Still right. I mean, you can be baptized retroactively. I see what you're saying. So there's or if you're Patrick swayze's goes you can move a penny. Right. Or if you're well, no, I guess, that's inter- dimensional. I was going to talk about the one where he moves a book on a bookshelf to communicate with his daughter tesseract. You love the ending of interstellar. So mad still. Every episode. We talk about the ending stellar. Liens live behind the bookshelf in your house..

"gotham city" Discussed on Talk Filmy to Me

"I think Batman one thousand nine one is just incredible. For a lot of reasons. But Batman returns is for me is actually the some of the pulse is not as good as the moments in this film. Now, I'm doing the proper pedantic. Oh, I now review rooms when I was a kid fuck fucking love this film, man, and the Mexican video game good classic video games you ever played a the mosque system one. I played a I think I played one of the mega drive adult enough played the one you're talking about that might have been the mega drive our house. Remember that was a really hard Batman returns game. And I remember I played the that before I even saw the film because the game came out when the cinematic released it two years previous early early nineties late eighties films would last year's in terms of when they get relief. To cinema VHS better. Also, I mean that soundtrack was so connect, it's right. Okay. So yeah, the return soundtrack is our conic is talking about because Batman, the first Batman has more soundtrack surely. Right. It does. So I wanna say soundtrack coming film school. So elf Mun revisit it the Batman fame and he jazzed up for returns. But it also become the thing for Batman the animated series launched in the same year. Yes. And like like that is just for me when you hit tones, that's Batman. Now. That's amazing. They'll mobile times throat because I hadn't seen Batman returns for. Well. I I bought it on Blu Ray when it came out and Blu Ray. And I never watched it, and I hadn't seen it. I haven't seen it after I bought it. So it's been probably like ten eleven years actually watched this phone and the one of the big things that stood out for me when I was making my notes was just how incredible the school was the music. It really really puts you in that Batman frame of mind. And then oversee you combine that with the cinematography and just the duck brew unis of Gotham city. It's it's this. All right. So it's not bad. All right. Bravo right thing which the only faint line. There's like the why why are we will shine his politics? We'll talk a little bit more about how we personally is film. But then talk about what let's film being made how it was made for kind of walk to film in terms of k moments and then at the end Khanna due to the UK. Hey, charge shit sandwich of something. Good something and and finish off with something. Good on that. And this is going to be something which might be controversial in this is that I think this film is actually more shoe market and people want to admit people say the first two Burton films incredible. And then it kinda goes downhill from there. We're also I actually Batman forever is actually quite good. But see Batman and Robin is train wreck. And there are some bits in this way. You can start to see the bits of dialogue or the way it's positioned. All of a sudden starts paving the way for when Tim Burton steps away. From the Batman projects and things Joel Schumacher was name. Steps in and it starts becoming a bit more kid friendly a bit more can a bit more shit dialogue. And there are some moments in this which you don't realize, oh, I've offer it was kind of not indicted difference between, but is is kind of a decline from that perspective. I agree with you on that remark as well. Because there's a there's a particular moment in the film where because again, obviously, that's the the theory is that the first year Batman films, the Birch and films were dark, and then after that, it was silly campy horrible gayness. And there's a moment in returns where there's a big massive. Can I swear on the show, you can sweat or your heart's content might say the F word, you can drop wherever bombs you on right? There's the fattest motherfucker I've ever seen in my life. He rocks around the corners big thug villain type guy, and basically Bama and punches him is like, you know, he's got me. But Bama planted some dynamite on the guy's chest. Right. And then if him into a fucking hole and everything explodes. So basically he's committed clear murder there. Then it pans, the Batman surveys, and he just has this like shit eating grin as it's like..

"gotham city" Discussed on Tumble: A Science Podcast for Kids

"Hi, I'm Lindsay and our Marshall welcome to tumble the show where we explore stories of science discovery today, we're headed to the bat cave. You mean the place where Batman and Robin hang out, waiting for calls about crimes and Gotham city. No, it's way cooler than that. We're going on a field trip to the biggest back, Coney in the entire world where we'll meet a bat biologist and find out how bats learn to be bad. One morning this summer, I got up to watch the sunrise on an old ranch outside of San Antonio, Texas, but there was one element of the sunrise. You can't see or hear anywhere else in the world. That sound is wind passing over millions of bat wings. So this is the beginning of when the bat start to rain down in the morning. That's real life bat, women's lash bet biologist Jessica dryer. I met her around six AM near the entrance to Bracken cave, which is home to fifteen million Mexican free tailed, bats, fifteen million, bats. Yeah. It's the largest concentration of mammals on the planet when you are standing by the cave and you look up into the sky pretty much as far as you can see upwards, you'll just see these little dots appear out of the sky and they'll just drop straight down and they've been clocked at about forty miles an hour dropping into the cave. And so I mean, literally thousands of bats will be raining down over you coming back into the cave, and it is one of the most cool otherworldly experiences you live. For have. It was like being in some sort of secret bat world. But what made it even more special was that this huge cloud of bats was made up only of mothers and their babies too big moms group. So we're approaching that point right now or the sun is starting to rise and more bats are starting to come in from a night of feeding. Are we gonna get pooped on. Yeah, yeah. If you're standing close enough to the cave. Yes, you will get some rain, some urine rain and some landing on your head. Hope you brought your bat raincoat or should I say hoop coat? I actually don't have one. This is so incredibly amazing. Where else can you see this kind of thing? Not many places in the world, and you know, it doesn't seem to matter how many times you've seen it. It always blows your mind. Jessica seen it a lot all summer. She's been camping outside the cave and every night she's up between two AM in nine AM catching bats, and that's what I've come to see. Wait, we catching bats dislike, like grabbing them out of the air like. How and why? Let's talk about why I. The point of this whole project that I'm working on is to figure out what's the transition looks like when a baby bat goes from drinking, only mother's milk to learning how to catch its own bugs. And then finally feeding itself entirely on books that catches it self. In other words, she's trying to figure out how bad babies get weaned from their mommy. And that's something we do is human babies, except, you know, we don't start eating bugs. It's usually fruit or something avocado. Yeah, but so, well, this is a delightful time for humans to spread, you know, food all over their faces. This is actually one of the most difficult times in a young bats life. So you're young, you're still growing. You're trying to figure out how to fly how echo locate how to catch bugs. All of this is happening at the same time and your milk supplies that you're getting fed are decreasing. And so you are expending a ton of energy trying to learn how to be about and you're the energy that's coming in is decreasing. So Jessica's goal is to figure out how that process actually works and to do that. She has to catch a lot of bats. So we're approaching the mouth of the cave right now. It's a quick hike from the viewing area where I met Jessica to the bat, catching spot. And we really just stand right in front of the the opening of the cave, right in the middle because the bats, when they're dropping down into the cave from the sky, they sort of aimed for the the middle top of the cave. And so that's where the most bats aren't. It gives us our best chance of catching them. So I'm with my technician..
