"But yeah in. In in the nolan films he was just raised up in the bats. Were kind of surrounding him. Then i think it's batman v superman because i distinctly remember young. Bruce wayne being flown up. Yeah by the bats. Batman superman which well it's excellent exact snyder. Go figure not the greatest. Still mind you so you know. But i don't come at me fans about membe superman but that said yeah. Maybe it was a homage to that but why chows white first off you know. Can they can these corn. And i'm just going to sit back and enjoy this crunch. Crunch can combat's even that many bats actually be able to sustain the weight of your own band. Thank you because for lying. He's he's gonna to this especially in that in that armored costume he's going to be close to two hundred pounds right and plus if he's he's a grown man he's all muscle when muscle weighs more than fat so he's going to be already heavy because of him being muscle best yes. You're absolutely right about that. So how in the world. So how far did they actually travel. Because it's like. How far did these guys go. Kathy chow shows us about batman being whisked away being carried away by the batch. So i was like what in the world okay. So it's not like it was right around the corner for these bands right. They had to go all the way back. To where autumn asylum presumedly. It's like follow the bats and you could see people then running off the because remember arkham asylum in downtown gotham city so they had to travel quite a ways. Apparently understand to be would be isolated from the from the city itself. Give the full super criminals within the city limits. i'm presuming. it's just common sense. But that was ridiculous. I get you had to have spoi- turn into a battle. Some point to have some narrative device to have him do that. But this was just not the way. I mean it was like rudolph guides the bats. Come on now. That was awful and speaking the witch. What was the point of killing wing in the previous episodes of bringing him back to life. This one well apparently is tension. There's this line that dick does when we'll talk about when we get tonight winger red hood but he makes his comments about like where jason says. You're gonna you know. What are you gonna do now. Kill me or whatever. And he goes no Because i know what it's like to be dead right. So is that it so that now that deck has had this death experience that suddenly he's changed and therefore he's not angry anymore. I just don't know rabbit in one again. What's up with all the titans dying for one. I don't know they just love to show us the afterlife..

Space has been disfigured by the job is laughing gas and now nowhere the clown prince of crime surprises jason and beats him with a crowbar and interesting. We never see. The joke is face on the screen which was an interesting well. They probably didn't want to cast anybody out because for one scene so they kept him to shadows but and just the purple pants. And spats i believe it was. Yeah jurkowitz maybe a wig or something. But but they made it very like silhouette ash so but the outline seemed like okay. This is the joker. Because you know. "You're out there saving humanity from super villains does it matter. How many pounds of carbon you used to do it. Gotham city would have been obliterated one hundred times over if batman weren't constantly. Bailing it out of trouble but that batmobile sure is a gas guzzler not to mention the bat wing airplane and the electricity bill for the bat cave is probably astronomical so is all that. Do gooding really doing good. After all some researchers from stanford university presented a poster at the american geophysical union's twenty seventeen fall meeting entitled stop saving the planet carbon accounting of superheroes and their impacts on climate. Change the point of the project was to bring awareness to the fact that everybody on this planet has a carbon footprint which is a calculation of how much carbon each of us in our daily activities such as driving eating and heating and cooling our houses the average americans carbon footprint is around forty four thousand pounds that's about twenty thousand kilograms of carbon per year an average person in the united arab emirates uses a good bit more and average peruvian uses considerably less. But what about your average superhero. According to the study they're all over. The map takes superman. According to the comics the man of steel is entirely solar powered which nets him. Fut print of zero. bless him. jessica jones probably comes in slightly below. The average americans carbon used thanks to her small brooklyn apartment and reliance on public transportation and swamp thing. What with his power to make plants grow might actually have a negative carbon footprint. That's not the case for every good samaritan in a cape however the oracle erstwhile bat girl turned computer. Hacker might weigh in at a conservative estimate of one hundred and fifty one thousand pounds or sixty eight thousand kilograms but the figure might be as high as thirty two million pounds or a hundred and forty five million kilograms depending on how many servers she's running even ironman who makes a concerted effort to employ green energy. Sources would come in higher than the average american because of the sheer amount of tech that he uses and the flash who can run near the speed of light might require an insane number of calories to accomplish this feat possibly as much as eighty nine million pounds or forty five million kilograms worth of carbon but isn't a kind of a silly question for serious scientists to spend their time exploring poster co author miles traer a postdoctoral researcher at stanford tokyo's if i calculate my own carbon footprint that's depressing if i calculate batmans carbon footprint. That's hilarious so let's go with the hilarious. It's a way of tricking people into learning.

My book today in the Hartmann Book Club is by joy and read. It's titled The Man Who's Sold America. This is from the introduction. Titled Welcome to Gotham. To truly understand Donald Trump. You need to have lived in New York City in the 19 eighties and nineties, when his businesses and marital escapades were a tabloid staple. Or maybe you just need to have grown up on Batman, Gotham City, which the brooding billionaire Bruce Wayne polices as his vigilante alter ego. Is an exaggerated dystopian Send up of old New York. It's filled with over the top villains who, like Batman, possess no actual superpowers get by on their cleverness, their ostentatious wealth. And their ability to wreak havoc on the urban landscape. Donald Trump seems ripped right out of that comic book, Super Villian universe with his cantilever hairstyle, weirdly long signature neckties, bizarre syntax and pension for slapping his surname on anything he's connected with from Buildings and golf courses to bottled water board games, and for a time a sham university that promised anyone could learn to be just like the Donald Trump and the cast of characters surrounding him. Could fit right in with Joker, Riddler, Penguin and Lex Luthor. Trump has existed on the outskirts of American celebrity in popular culture for the lifespans of most Americans under the age of 40. "Strategy. Do you work on, too? Is One one is none Kinda, strategy, or white? You have is what you have, and that's it. Yeah pretty much when I create the the pieces, legends of Gotham City Line. They're pretty much one of a kind pieces. I don't create. Like I, said I I. With the help of my good friend Charles here, I just came to the conclusion that. Making stuff for sale is going to be more trouble than it's I i. Love Your idea of doing the the show experience and you know I could imagine that being. A burden to to track across the country with but same. being quite rewarding as a as a audience member going through it i. let what kind of anyone's do you look at for that school? Gymnasiums churches like what what you're not. That that's a great question because in two thousand and nineteen with the Brooklyn COMECON. That was the first time that the entire legends of Gotham City Exhibit had been put out. And I had a great time that weekend. I I had a smile on my face your ear the entire weekend. That's awesome. But I have to say. I was less than thrilled. With the venue, yeah! The venue that we were at was a kind of an open convention center like a gathering center in Brooklyn. Where the walls with space was kind of very rustic You know Um Cinderblock Walls the you know. The the the the floor was just you know. A cement floor wasn't wasn't a carpet for like that now and I've always imagined coming out having Amigo meets which are always held him and hotels. And ballrooms in hotels. With carpeting chandeliers and I think that's really the kind of venue that I see the legends of got them city being shown O'Brien that or Gallery. Gallery, type venues. And gathered venues a great because you know for the. For the duration of the installation of the exhibit. You can control the light. Yeah, and is very very big deal for the LX. We talked earlier critical of being. Because I, really you know. The idea of wanting to lighting up each individual DIORAMAS. You'd be able to something that we talked about and really want to be able to do that and you just can't do that and a journal Weekend Convention Yeah. Display because you have other exhibitors around you. Swim bloody murder shooting. You know playing with lights and tell them the just to your area now outside of the the Dioramas to you have like off in the distance like just black cardboard with with lights on them to look like other parts. Yes, so if you're an audience member, you're not just looking at a Diorama, but you feel like you're in the the the city itself and away. What we have is the next best thing or simply describing. For, example art, the really big Diorama that we have got the warehouse with Batman Rob on the rooftop. That Diorama is backed by eight foot by eight foot. Gotham City backdrop with the bat signal, shining dramatically sky buildings, other rooftops, stretching off into the night water towers. So you when you're viewing the Diorama you'll doing it within..

Joker review: Love it or hate it

"Of film that did really hot though that would be joker and it is polarizing films of the year it is true a love it or hate it type of film and I'm finding myself on the ladder side of that Ledger I went into this folks expecting that it's going to be where the best films of the year and I couldn't wait for it and I love the fact that clearly taught phelps is paying them is to score says and had said that taxi driver in comedy ric huge references and reference points for him but as I tweeted in my review I said tops pays homage and Aaron Charles is a good guys a loyal listener the podcast he immediately corrected me the tweets that have paid them is it's a derivative I'm like that's true tops is no Martin Scorsese he's making taxi driver King Comedy Without the Intelligence in the witch and the subtlety now the story is supposed to be this forever alone in a crowd failed comedian Arthur fleck seeks connections he walks the streets of Gotham city Arthur wars to masks the one he pays for his day job as a clown and the guys he x any futile attempt to feel like he's part of the world around him isolated bullied and disregarded by society flack begins a slow descent into madness as he transformed into the criminal mastermind known as the joker sounds great but it's not the first thirty minutes or so I enjoyed because I could appreciate Lawrence share the director of photography clearly again paying monster Scorsese's taxi driver literally adult movie theater they show in the early minutes you see the garbage piling up feels like they're trying to evoke the taxi driver of the seventies but you know taxi driver even though it's a very dark film and it's an urban nightmare there's still moments of Levity Q. Albert Brooks who is hilarious in the movie documents stool pigeons there's still romance you know when score says he was feted by the Afi with a lifetime achievement award Julia Roberts introduced a clip and it's a wonderful clip where Travis has I picking up betsy and it shows you know for a guy who doesn't always get a claim for having a playful touch it's a really sweet scene and the way that Travis picks her up he says you know I think it was beautiful whoa ever seen and he says when he's going to pick her up and she'll be on time and I'm sure you will and it's a really nice scene and your member of the fact that Travis has a Mohawk and ends up gunning down a bunch of thugs moments like that and it's you know there's a glimmer of upside there's none of that era joker it is a relentlessly bleak thoroughly unpleasant film experience you know comedy has great humor in the movie I mean it's a really funny movie within the fact that Rupert Pumpkin is a guy who is a very painful isolated self-loathing character but it's still really funny I mean the fact he's so obsessed with Jerry Lewis talk show hosts that eventually feels compelled to kidnap him there's a dark undercurrent always but there's some big time lapse in the way that rupert is just so delusional in this film though there's none of that I mean it is just a painful experience it's about as subtle as a sledgehammer to the Groin and even though Joaquin Phoenix is getting Oscar buzz and and I do is an excellent actor I think the performance owes a little bit to his character into the master Kinda feel like it's a you know he's almost Pankaj to that character and listen he's a talented guy it's also always performance at the Oscars love I mean they love these showy flamboyant performances he's got a bunch of ticks the over laughing it's very flamboyant it's not today it's bad acting is pointing out that the Oscars love this kind of stuff so I don't even know if he deserves a best actor nomination but I can guarantee you we'll get nominated for one and he's certainly an intense actor and gave it two and a half maple leafs that was right after the movie the more I've thought about it I'm giving it only two maple leafs like I said it's just too derivative and just to pleasurable of film experience and there's obviously but other conversations about it people are mentioning is it a commentary mental illness and the fact that mentally ill people are being ignored is it a film it's inciting violence a natural born killers which I thought a lot actually watching them which I think is an excellent movie and I liked a lot Owen gleiberman right favourite film critics he championed natural born killers and unfortunately for me he's actually repeating jokers well though he next article which he said everyone is very polarized by being the was polarize similar decades said people either loving or hating it made a ton of money doc tober opening ever in terms of rotten tomatoes in this won best picture at the Venice Film Festival the Golden Line which means it could be an Oscar contender but even a good article from hr it's got fiber he was saying that some voters have said I don't know whether to give it every Oscar or to give it a Razzie like that's that's exactly the way we're looking at with this film because is so polarizing and people are just walking out there arguing about immediately in terms of rotten tomatoes sixty percent is the average above that is above average below that is below average Chris only sixty nine percent but audiences liked it they gave it a ninety percent so ultimately it was not a film for me it's not a film I would recommend Joe I don't know if you saw it but the floor is yours what say you I and I was Gonna go see it until you told me just how bleak and pleasurable it was and I was GonNa see last night and I thought I don't really need to if it's just GonNa be that dark I'm sure walking Phoenix is really really good in it but if it's just someone falling down a staircase in slow motion for two hours I'm just like I I got my the baseball team to do that I don't need to watch that in the cinema for two hours absolutely right you I mean there's just nothing as I said you think of a dark movie you love this year's big movie lovers I'm that there's still moments of levity there are still moments of light amidst the darkness and the comedy of the film is making this isn't that this is just Oh he's laughed at ridiculed he punched he finally acts out his violent urges and feel some sort of release and that causes them to do more. I mean it's just like you said Joe I the project and just watch your twins I wouldn't recommend the film too many

Joker, Commentary

"Going to be a podcast her everyone laughed at me well no one's laughing now and Stewart and this is the host who always has negative thoughts Jacob joker a movie that I could not believe have the height around it that it did I can't recall the last time a superhero film was Ben so polarizing I mean people worried about shootings in theaters people saying Joaquin deserves an Oscar yeah it was all over the place coming out of Toronto Oh this is going to be the film of the year it's going to get all the Oscars and then Todd Phillips director opens his mouth and got a lot of backlash for what he thought we're comedy was these days yet all the place with this film that said I got to say this one took me by surprise I assumed that DC was in free fall. I mean we have all commented on how their output has been inconsistent can we all agree at best putting it nicely right that they have not had the scene unless nece that the Marvel Universe has been able to bestow on all of their works when I heard they were doing a one off joker movie I was like that sounds like a bad idea story are you getting those marvel paycheck saying they're in free fall I mean wonder woman made one of a billion dollars off man made a billion dollars what kind of free was that will somebody say well I don't care what the hardcore people think the truth of the matter is a lot of their movies have stone DOC and they've not consistent the fact that we have a one of joker movie this joker that we're told will never appear with Batman what the hell are they doing marvel would never do that is what I guess I would say sure but I don't mind that like what is the best spider man film Spiderman entered the spider verse like that is not connection to the m. c. you or what Sony is doing with Tom Allen's spider manoeuvres etta any of that so I don't mind a one off if you can just pull off a good movie I don't care if it's in any kind of continuity villain standalone movies making a Superhero movie without a superhero has not been something I've thought has worked before I mean Holly Aries cat-woman Tom Hardy thinom they could never figure out how to do sinister of six I mean you could even probably throw the Star Wars prequels into that concept having the super villain story told without a counterpoint of heroism where's our entry point who are we supposed to be with and what are they going to accomplish the you mentioned marvel I think that DC here is taking a cue from Marvel's newest acquisition Fox Todd Phillips talked about how it took a lot of convincing at Warner Brothers to let him do an R. rated joker movie but that was the only thing he was pitching and he's literally hearing responses from Warner brothers like we sell joker pajamas at target what are you going to do to our character that might hurt Pyjama sales and look at the roads that deadpool paved and I think even more specifically logan going more dramatic and being R. rated you can't beat marveled by playing Marvin those game the way you beat marvelous by making your own Fox did that and nobody is even see new mutants because nobody knows what to do with it again the X. Men horror movie yeah they've experimented sometimes those experiments have been successful I'm just saying approaching this project hearing the we're going to do a one off film about the region of joker seemed like a waste of time I was not excited about this movie at all until I saw the trailer Yeah Al admit I mean after seeing what happened to jared Leto in jokers role in suicide squad. We'll see at that movie he doesn't think he was in that movie enough he's got a scene it was not overly excited to see what they would do with joker now what I will say is somewhere at this very moment jared Leto has pissed Yeah Joaquin Phoenix get attached this because that's what I would have gotten excited you know he's one of those actors like Tom Hardy who's like a Nicholas cage who is just going to make some decisions and go with them they could be czar. They could be captivating like that trailer yeah they really tapped into Martin Scorsese in that taxi driver field but I was even more excited about Joaquin Phoenix playing this role and should be pointed out he is the man that would be doctor strange he has quartered comic book movies before and walked away saying this is not really for me why do this one he was also offered the role of Bruce Banner the reason he didn't do them he didn't WanNa sign multi picture contracts he didn't want to do what Chris Evans and Robert Downey junior did where the next seven years of your life you're working basically as a day player for marvel here it's a one picture deal and the ways they got him on board for this one it was Todd Phillips again Joaquin was connected from the very beginning and the Pitch Phillips gave him is we're going to make a real movie but we're going to get warner brothers to fifty million dollars for it by calling it fucking joker yeah how did Todd Phillips and doing this because I've seen a lot of his films old cool that hangover trilogy these are not things that I associate with a Gritty New York Scorsese style film you saying that and coach when I look at this filmography I hadn't seen most of what he meant. Yeah they're bad comedies well he makes kind of comedy I don't patronize the I'm not ever interested in watching skin hutch that's just not something I'm going to see I did see war dogs which I actually thought it was a little underrated I thought it was pretty good it's okay yeah kind of fell apart at the end yeah thought it was decent as well and it was four dogs that actually got this happening as he was at an early screening of war dogs with Warner brothers and realize is is exact phrase was war dogs wasn't going to set the world on fire as so he started talking to Warner about what could we make that's going to really get attention and do a little bit more be a little more provocative look way down on his resume his first film and you might actually see why he really got the Gig I was doc I didn't realize I had always heard about this documentary about the punk icon singer G- yeah I did not know top Phillips did that I have seen it ooh those are some live performances you wanna be careful with he strips down throws a species tough stuff to watch yeah I watched the movie I was like Oh I've always wanted to see it this gives me an lent reason it may be the closest of all his films to joker it begins with an actual endorsement from John Wayne Gay see another killer clown so yeah brutal I don't know that I'm telling people I recommend that experience be prepared I don't say this lightly it is very punishing it is very hard set is provocative and ways a lot of people probably want appreciate but you can't see a director who's very much trying to confront a freak entertainer and I do think at a core G G Allen and joker are two sides of the same coin so I would be interested to see a guy that came from punk rock bring a punk rock aesthetic to of joker movie if we must Gotcha Joker Origin Story. I WanNa say though I'm hesitant because I mean I always liked the way Keith Ledger played it how did I get my scars there's a danger and telling US definitively how joker came to exist right. There's something about the mystery we want to leave I've always liked the mystery the funny thing and you can go back to books and Nachos where in our talks about the killing joke written by Alan Moore the joker says I always change my story but here's the version I'm going to tell of my own gin and they tell an origin story and then just as origin story we're just GonNa make that the real thing but yeah I've always preferred him to be like Batman rewritten so obsessed with origin Martha Thomas Wayne Getting Killed and the pearls and walking out Zora all of that that has been told so many times joker being the opposite of Batman I liked that you just this mysterious chaotic clown figure that comes out of nowhere yeah I've definitely was thinking the killing joke when watching this and how it took elements of that in that Comic Book Joker was a failed stand up comedian who was kind of down on his luck in a rundown older Gotham city but I came in I think we might be seeing virtually and adaptation of the killing joke minus all the Batman stuff no they definitely go in a different direction with this but it gave them a good starting point and joker said he likes his origin story to be multiple choice. DC is having both ways they're gonNa make their continuity multiple choice switch movies do you want and continuity go ahead that's weird for me that we're seeing something that I should not think of as a comic book movies essentially what they're telling me don't worry I'll have nothing to do with Zam Aquaman wonder woman and all of that I mean did they even have that DC logo they have that old school Warner Brothers logo show up no DC logo okay and yet I mean it's not just your average comic book movies this movie's doing bigger than a lot of films I mean it's opening bigger than the average thor film it's maybe not topped here it's not spiderman but I'm not really it's no atman though it's beaten that man right yeah this is going to have a ninety million joining in the US. The biggest October release of all time is it Halloween in the mood for something kind of scary after it we want another killer oh but it's shocking to me the box office for what essentially feels a little art film is so huge and that it's rated R. You can't get teenagers in which is where marvel makes its money is they are aiming specifically at thirteen to seventeen year old market with their PG thirteen films and yes adults can like it in younger kids can like it but they're keeping that content for a rated R. Film in an error where in my experience it's much harder for young people to get into a rated R. Film that it made this much money is shocking to me I expected it to do well I didn't expect it to break venoms record

"A movie that has had a lot of advanced publicity in a scary negative kind of way. but you were here yesterday you did say that I hinted at what to review is going to be that I read in the Chicago sun times today sometimes that calm thank you that can. and you really liked it but it is a very strong film it's always interesting to see when there's a certain movies that transcend the you know what they call film Twitter and the eel movie fans and get everybody involved in discussion and cable news channels and everybody else is talking about it long articles are written all before it comes out I actually saw somebody a film critic it from another market the other day say feels like the joker's already come and gone because we've been talking about it so much I'm like okay you know get out for once we get the ivory tower they get out from a that's ridiculous the average movie fan even they think most dedicated movie fans it's only the week of movie comes out that they really start getting into it so there's all this talk about the joker it doesn't inspire violence as a glorified violence are we going to see outbreaks of violence in theaters I mean first of all we all know that we have the you know the horrific shooting in the R. Aurora Colorado movie theater during the show a string of dark knight movie by a guy who was it twisted depraved cycle path right that was inspired by the movie or you know or motivated by the movie to to to to to read that kind of havoc for awhile there we were hearing about all hip hop movies back in the day those are going to go have people fighting it writing all that's of the very few isolated incidents of violence at movie theaters is almost never had anything to do with the movie playing. and in terms of violent acts were movies are cited well five hundred books six thousand songs two hundred video games and eight million manifestos and some politicians of it also cited as being contributing factors so that all being said I don't see the joker all being any kind of glorification of this character or even making him an anti hero he's a villain and it's a it's grounded the joker this version is grounded in our authentic world all of the dark knight movies as opposed to very stylized superhero movies type that we see that we love it's rated R. for a reason it's set in the nineteen eighties early nineteen eighties of Gotham City but that's a city is never been more New York City than it is in this movie from the way it looks to the streets to the fact that it's a city on the brink with a garbage strike and there's tabloids kind of driving the media that the time doubling newspapers a particular were and and talk radio and you know things like that because we have the internet and into this world is one Arthur flak who is the Joaquin Phoenix character that is his real name is Arthur flak he lives with his mom he's probably thoroughly thirties he's been in and out of institutions is on six different kinds of medications his job is working for the most low rent clown rental firm you've ever seen in your life I mean which is just kind of perfect in a horrible and sad so it's a bunch of guys like him even among these misfit outcast he's a misfit outcast where they weren't about to let you know flipped the sign in front of the electronic store that's closing or go to a birthday party and he can't even hack that job he gets fired because he brings a gun to a children's hospital is pastor I guess off your routines so this is the origins story out of the joker that we go on to see ask that man was is based on a comic book version was the order was a yeah there was one strain of us stories about Arthur flak that were that were at the rivet there was this place is an original screenplay but but that's the name of the guy and and you know. one of the interesting things about this film is it takes place also the Gotham City where Arthur Wayne famous billionaire is considering a run for mayor his son Bruce Wayne is eight years old Ole that's all I'm gonna say about the appearance of those characters in that plot line in this movie Joaquin Phoenix is amazing he does a crazy and other means that we I. I get it but the the movie with that plays into the origin story Batman to I'm assuming that rendition sellers so yes and and Arthur flex mother in this movie worked for weeded Destry is years and years earlier and has some certain theories about what's happening well know it so it all ties together so walking Phoenix plays this character very much like a de Niro in taxi driver it has a king of comedy element because he's got a fixation he wants to be a stand up comic even though he's the least funny person ever he wants to be a stand up comic it is his goal is to be on the very Franklin show which is a Johnny Carson asked national talk show that that's live in New York and Robert De Niro plays the Johnny Carson ask talk show hosts the have run hero whose two of his most famous movies are being referenced in this film taxi driver of course can a comedy okay calmly Robert deniro was Republican the Stocker right in this movie he's the talk show host that the joker wants to get to know and appear on the show. so that all kind of ties in the movies much closer lowered tone I would say to taxi driver king of comedy than a typical superhero movie the violence when it happens is very you know realistically gory bloody and close up and individualistic it's not super horrible regional billion people die but it's not a PD thirty long shots here it's done very very you know close ups medium shots reaction shots you know blood splattering everywhere bases. not really so is it really is kind of it yeah much like taxi driver yeah the eve the violence of the streets is more like somebody who might or might not be the joker has been accused of killing three jerks on the subway shades of the Bernie Getz subway last killings and some people in the Gotham City now think the tech as a hero because he killed three yuppies and they deserve it I want percent should go down that's the kind of political side of this do you feel for the characters not I would see you feel form you you real you see some things that happened to him that contribute to him being who he is. thank you know the fact that he definitely has a mental rise he's on all these medications the city social services get caught so now he's not gonna get his medication is not gonna get to see a therapist all of those things we see something from his past. but that's the kind of stuff you see about almost every serial killer in every movie whether fictional one or it's a show like mine hunters that talks about real ones I mean Hannibal Lecter probably didn't have the best childhood I'm guessing how many guests that to go with that but it's more it's more tone of those types of movies and TV shows then any kind and there certainly are never a moment some of the people in the movie may come to worship the joker character or admire him because they're equally depraved but those are the people in the movie that's evil watching the movie so as a watch as a as a movie then if you go to this movie and his cat basically understand that it's the origin story the joker yeah are you going to enjoy it. that's up to the person what they feel about the joker I would say that after my long deep dive into all the controversy and and the intricacies it's a very strong film done very dark tones about a depraved killer but that you've got you do have the element for the comic book fans of sand I recognize that thing from you see will usually wore even his look it's interesting to see how his wardrobe and his choice of clothes change and evolve through the course of the movie seen some of the trailers were at the end. of the movie of the trailer he looks a lot more or at least dress is a lot more like the colorful joker of Jack Nicholson is heading into a new Batman series I don't think so this is a standalone separate well it's it's it's like a lot of it's like let's see what happens. it really does it does it certainly doesn't ended type everything that could possibly happen in that particular Gotham City even at that particular time or you could certainly flash forward. two twenty years later so it now would you see this moving toward a. an origin story for all of the different I mean you see a penguin origin story no I don't I don't think so I I think you should look at this as the standalone film about a character who's been a lot of on going you know has been a part of war or the half century but I think you should look at as a standalone movie of standalone origin story it's interesting because all the joker's we've seen. but when they don't like Jack Nicholson you know that version he actually becomes the joker he falls into a vat of green acid that particular telling of the story but he's not the joker at the beginning of the story. in most of them the joker's already the joker when heath ledger make you know who still I still say that performances is you know maybe the greatest of all time he wanted in a posthumous Lee that kind of an award for his first appearance in that movie he's the joker right now all ready with the make up and the stars say I who'd now the speechifying at the sole use of. that way so serious you know we don't see the young joker before it becomes a joke on that film here you see Arthur flak right I don't get into the store has no interest in becoming any kind of super villain or painted clown or anything he's just a sad guy what is the plan for Batman at the moment I have no idea I mean the planters movies yeah they're gonna do another movie but again but. and we will yeah we just got back woman just as just come out of the TV series because Batman finally I think they did some of that here in Chicago actually wells I know Robert Pattinson's been named as the next Batman if you know of when DC mounts this what I mean the letter of the given out the DC universe is continually can kick continually looking to start all over again because every time they've done it is not working the justice league didn't really work when I got everybody together even though some of those characters have done pretty okay the.

The Joker premiere causing some to fear safety

"The new film joker is a rage filled origin story starring Joaquin Phoenix as Batman's most famous nemesis it opens tomorrow but there's some screenings beginning today security has been heightened at many theaters across the country because of fear related to the Aurora movie theater shooting in twenty twelve which is at a showing of the Batman film the dark knight I feel critic Justin Chang has this review of joker joker is only just now opening in theaters but it already seems to have exhausted its potential for hype and controversy you may have heard that it won the prestigious top prize at the Venice Film Festival and that its star Joaquin Phoenix is a likely academy award nominee for his astounding physical transformation. you may also have heard that the movie is much more realistic and disturbing than the average comic book adaptation and that summer anxious that its protagonist a lonely white male misfit who starts killing people may incite real life acts of violence you can't blame people for feeling anxious in a country where mass shootings happen every week but while joker is far from a major artistic triumph it's not an irresponsible glorification either it gazes with both terror and pity on Arthur Flack who's played by Phoenix as the saddest sack in all of Gotham City it's nineteen eighty one and he's working as a clown for hire he aspires to become a stand up comedian even though nothing about him or his life is remotely funny he lives with his mother in a cramped apartment and we learned that he once spent some time in a mental hospital he suffers from a rare condition that causes him to burst out in noisy uncontrollable spasms of laughter. he meets regularly with the social worker who has some on several different antidepressants into one day she tells him that the city is cutting funding

Is Joker a 'Dangerous' Movie? Director Todd Phillips Responds to Critics

"Director Todd Phillips Take on the jokers starring Joaquin Phoenix is bringing bringing up a now familiar conversation what is Hollywood's role when it comes to gun violence and how should the industry respond to concerns about excessive violence in film NTV Brent Lang is executive editor for film immediate variety and he wrote about why the families of the twenty twelve Aurora theater shooting are concerned about joker oh car. Hey Brent Hi John can you I set up a little bit of the premise of joker and how violence is part of its story sure so joker is is an origin story and it it takes a look at this man who's a mentally disturbed man living with his kind of crazy mother and a very rundown rundown part of the city and he has kind of aspirations of being a stand up comic and you know without giving too much away those those dreams don't come to pass and instead he kind of gradually loses touch with reality and a lot of violence ensues and but as part of that he kind of inspires this anarchic uprising in Gotham city and it is it is a very violent very bloody very R a-rated comic book adaptation so how much of the premise or the violence is behind the families of the Aurora shooting victims to write this letter and Dan share their concerns well as far as I can tell the families of the Aurora shooting victims have not seen the film they're they're reacting to kind live coverage of the pitcher and and they say that you know when their letter they say that that they've heard that it presents the character as a as a protagonist with a sympathetic origin origin story and and that gave them pause and they're they're very clear though they're they're not asking Warner Brothers to not release the movie they say that they support the right to free speech and free expression but then they also sort of take a page out of Spiderman and say with with great power comes great responsibility so they're using this film to Urge Warner Brothers and its parent company Warner Media and I suppose at and T. as an extension extension to become more involved in the issue of gun reform and they're asking for the company to support of certain in sort of specific means of of social engagement they're asking them to end political contributions to candidates who who take money from the NRA they're asking them to used their their clout and their platform to pressure Congress to act for gun reform and they're also asking them to help fund survivor funds and and gun violence intervention programs and it seems like the conversation around joker is part of a broader conversation around violence in Hollywood your or editor in chief. Claudia eller wrote an op Ed for variety around the time that blunt house productions film the hunt was dropped by universal pictures. The headline on that piece is why it's time for Hollywood to reconsider the amount of violence on screen so even if the families from Aurora are not really asking Warner Brothers to limit the violence that is in their movies it does feel like these things are starting to percolate up and there might might be a bigger conversation. That's either about to happen or is already happening. Absolutely I mean I think that that this is a conversation that that's been happening for a while. It's interesting I talked to someone named Igor Volk Street and he runs an organization called guns down America and he helped craft this letter and I actually asked him sort of specifically if they were implying that that there was a connection between onscreen violence and and and gun violence and he was very careful and he said actually science doesn't back that up and that that they aren't contending that but just because he thinks that it doesn't mean that other people don't and I think it's a debate that's going to continue through the release of joker and onto the release of other violent movies that Hollywood backs. I WANNA play a a little bit of what Joker Director Todd Phillips and star Joaquin Phoenix said about this issue in an interview with the website jeon. There have been a lot of pieces written by people people who proudly state they haven't even seen the movie and they don't need to. I would just argue that you might want to watch the movie you might want to watch it with an open mind. The movie make statements about lack of love childhood trauma lack of compassion in the world and I think people can handle that message. It's it's it's uncomfortable. It's uncomfortable for for all of us. I think we all are aware of these issues and we are concerned. I think that's why we talk about it I. I don't think that we can be afraid to talk about it so they're offering this defense but it feels like this debate is probably GonNa get a lot more interesting really soon around movies like this absolutely and as you mentioned it already existed around the hunt now I will just say that as somebody. I'm not a critic but I did see joker and I can't say that I thought that it had a lot of profound things to say about violence in America or what what what Spurs people to violent action I didn't think that that anything there was was terribly deep to me it sort of played like a riff on Scorsese films like taxi driver or King of comedy movies that had a little more depth but that's my personal opinion and is it possible Zabol that this whole debate could affect the way the film has received might have some consequences. I think it definitely could it could have consequences on the box office. If people you know have safety concerns of some kind I it could have consequences on its awards chances because joker is being positioned as an awards play by Warner brothers Joaquin Phoenix who stars as the title character's was received a great deal of claim but if the film becomes too controversial potentially not that that kills its its Oscar chances so there's a lot of impact financially critically in in terms of awards Brent Lang is is the executive editor for film and Media at Variety Joker opens in theaters October fourth brand. Thanks much for coming back on the show. Thanks for having me.

"Class growing don't come back for like a week it's fine number three one student said I remember one day at school I claim to have accidentally cut off my own pinky toe when the teacher asked me about it I showed them my bandaged foot with cranberry juice poured on part of it and they sent me home. well far into that lie yeah that's a lab yeah number two a high schooler said I once sign myself out of school in the middle of the day because I really just didn't want to be there and in the excuse box I said Gotham City needs me. the principal apparently thought it was so funny that they actually let them get away with it. I reward that kid to. yes yes Gotham City doesn't. that's that's obviously very funny you can go ahead and take the day off and the number one most creative excuse that any kid has used to skip school this year a sixth grader wrote once I really did not want to go to school so I woke up early in the morning I got my hands dirty with the sole of my shoe and rub my eyes with them my right eye turned bright red so I told my dad I had pinkeye and since it's contagious they let me miss school and even though I looked better the next morning they kept me home one extra day just to be safe. little faking of the pink guy. also. as the best it's like the best of us because. I used to use pink eye all the time to get out of school I would like close it and say they will all it hurt really bad it is I I think it's pink eye because I did have pink eye a few times so I would just use and there they don't want you going anywhere. do they just go go you room to shut the door don't come out until that eyes better video games all day and they're not.

"I don't live in Gotham city and think about I mean, there are so many situations in a day starting from the first choice you make where you avoid all kinds of scenarios because of a fear of getting hurt. You're not even conscious of all the things you avoid every day because you're afraid of getting hurt. I mean, I guess I could I could step out of a moving car. If I saw somebody yelling at his girlfriend in front of a club. Right. That kind of thing. Well, yeah. But also like you don't in the fight right there. If you see some guy fall out of a car and roll over and hit a brick wall. And then he gets up and he's like, hey bothering you. Hey, why don't you be nicer to your girlfriend? Hey, hey, buddy. I think you're using while you're swears while you're the yourself. But buddies wealth is not one that anyone would choose. I I don't think I wanted and that's why it's a fictional trope. Because you see these people who were like they've apparently never seen anybody. Swap comedies, right. Right. Because none of them are like, oh, this is like a freaky Friday thing. Well, what kid would ever say? I wish my mom could just be inside my body for a day. She that show her. The funny thing is a completely arbitrary device that we know will never happen. No scientific basis for it. I mean, the bodies while comedy the soul transference presume, some kind of cartesian dualist, right? Where your mind your consciousness exists out with your body, and it can just get mapped onto any other body with no difficulties, and that's that was very appealing in the seventeenth century. But I think today we know that your consciousness intrinsically in the nerves of your head, and you couldn't just drop your conscious into someone else's brain. And they would be you'd have to physically transplant the brain which never happens in these movies. Nobody ever gets their heads sawed off, but it fit. Well. No, that's true. But unless I'm missing some part of I never saw the Disney channel Shelley long Gaby Hoffmann head transplant that transplant off. At some. They're both weirdly stitched on sewing thread. No. But is that? I mean, it seems like it is kind of written into reincarnation that your soul would insult form cleansed of memory, but the same soul, the memory, but son, how you're you. Yeah. You're you, and you would transfer from body to body, but in other in other religious traditions is there any instance, where the I mean, even if you don't believe in if you just believe that your spirit is going to survive your body. Right. I mean that does somehow imply that, but it never is lead. It's not transferrable to. I mean, got it. No point puts you in someone else. It's book of job like scenario got on the devil, or like, you know, what would be funny Shelley long as very up tight executive, and she does not get along with her daughter. Yeah. It's the soul survives the body. But they're only a few places it can go. It can go to heaven or you can go to. Well, yes, it can't just like wonder the earth. The clearly it's not just an effect of how it feels to have a bunch of neurons firing because it can survive the neurons stopping right? Even in most western religious traditions in my tradition. Mormonism the sole actually predates the body. We all lived before we came here as well. So clearly that's something that can come get imposed on a head somehow, and then leave again, we'll also you can I mean, you're in the after world you are affected by things that are happening on earth. Still right. I mean, you can be baptized retroactively. I see what you're saying. So there's or if you're Patrick swayze's goes you can move a penny. Right. Or if you're well, no, I guess, that's inter- dimensional. I was going to talk about the one where he moves a book on a bookshelf to communicate with his daughter tesseract. You love the ending of interstellar. So mad still. Every episode. We talk about the ending stellar. Liens live behind the bookshelf in your house..
