Coronavirus Vaccine Q&A: Variants, Side Effects, And More

"You're listening to shortwave from npr. As more and more of the covid nineteen vaccines. Roll out. Here at npr. We've been getting a lot of questions from y'all questions like if i'm vaccinated. Can i still pass the virus to somebody else. What are the side effects of vaccines. How soon until we vaccinated enough people to return to normal so today on the show we have answers as part of a special segment. I just did on another. Npr podcast called. It's been a minute with sam sanders. Yes i am in the hot seat for this one. Y'all if you haven't checked that show out do it. It consistently makes me thank laugh. Cry it is so so good. I'm eddie. And you're listening to shortwave daily science. Podcast from npr. My dear friend who had a how are you. Welcome back to the show. I'm doing well sam. How are you buddy. I'm good. I feel like the last time we had yuan seems like forever ago but i think my biggest question with crow virus. Yes whether i could still pet other people's dogs. Oh that's interesting. That's an interesting version of that story because it was about whether or not you could kiss them on. The mouth is however members over the past few weeks. We have asked you our listeners. To send in your questions about the vaccine all right if folks were able to get the vaccine. Can they still carry and transmit corona virus to other people. So let's start off with what we know for sure right. We know that the vaccines that are authorized in the us. Do an excellent job of preventing symptoms of covid including those really scary severe symptoms. And let's just say the moment here on the show to acknowledge how monumental that is. I mean that means fewer cases that result in hospitalizations given our healthcare workers break that means less people dying every day. I mean that in itself is huge. And that's what the vaccines were designed and tested to do so. As far as whether or not vaccinated person could have the virus in their bodies. Pass it to somebody else. Even if they don't get sick there is some early. And i mean like really early data. That looks promising Some that shows that vaccinated people are less likely to have the virus in their body at all or they carry less virus. So that's all very good news but we still don't have enough data to say for sure that the vaccine cuts down on transmission or by. How much so for now we just kind of have to wait which means that vaccinated folks should still mask up. When they're interacting with people outside their household especially if those people earned vaccinated if we know that the vaccine will protect you from getting severe symptoms. Most likely is it safe for two people who are fully vaccinated to hug or like hang out in the same room. Yeah okay so. Here's what i will say about this. Because we don't know for sure if vaccinated people can carry the virus those vaccinated people just need to think about who else they are interacting with right. So if you're living at home with somebody who has severely immuno-compromised is in vaccinated. You would treat the situation differently than if you live by yourself right but if you are to vaccinated people. Maybe even wearing masks for. That added layer of risk reduction. I think you've reduced risk enough. You know to hug it out especially if you were to people that don't have like close contact with other people. I am a big proponent of risk reduction that still allows us to have some of our humanity right and requested. You know to vaccinated hugging. I would argue is one of those situations. People will argue with me. But i would say so. You know there are so many headlines it seems like every day there's a new variant of the corona virus who knows where they're coming from. How effective is the vaccine against other and newer variants of corona virus. So this is a great question. Great question other stumper. I wish your listeners. With throw me a couple of corona. So what i would say is. This is another situation where things are developing right. We didn't know about these variants like a month or two ago but there are some data that suggests that the vaccine might not work as well for a few of those variants. At this point you know most of the experts that we're talking to say they will still work right. That's the beauty of having vaccines that super super effective that even if they don't work as well against one variant they will still provide protection In fact public health officials are saying that the best way to prevent these variants from really taking off in the us is by having as many people vaccinated as possible so for now with the variants that we're seeing in the us. It looks like the vaccines will work. Well on most of them and still provide some protection on the others which is good news. All right As more and more people in my circles get the vaccine. I'm starting to hear them. Talk to me about side effects and a few folks. I know said i was fine. Second dose. I was like knocked out for a day. Or what in. General are the side effects of the vaccine. Yeah this is a great question. I'm really glad we're talking about side effects. Because i think it's important to talk about them and be transparent so all vaccines can cause side effects right. And that's because vaccines worked by kick-starting your immune system similar to what would happen with a natural infection so if you do get side effects like you get a little bit of swelling from the shot or you get a mild fever is just your immune system doing what we want it to do now. Rarely vaccines do more serious reactions like allergic reactions for example. So it's really important to talk about allergies with your doctor before getting the vaccine or you know if you get the shot and swelling gets worse after a day or if your other symptoms are getting more severe lasting more than a few days you should call the doctor but the overwhelming majority of the time sam for the two vaccines that are authorized for use in the us. The most common symptoms are pain at site of injection swelling As well as fevers chills aches feeling tired and and some people experience very little of those symptoms and some feel pretty uncomfortable. Like you said for a few days especially after that second shot because that first shot your immune system's like oh. Hey what's up what's up what's going on in that second job was like oh you like now. You're trying to see so so that is really your immune system really being kicked in action. So like you said. I've heard of people that need to take the day off after that second shot. Here's the thing. Sam those types of side effects. Go away right and you know. It doesn't always go away after a few days. Kobe right you know what i mean. So i think it's important to be transparent about vaccine side effects but also to remind people like for the overwhelming majority. This is not even close to being as bad as a bad case of covert all right next question for you. Let's say you're grandparent has been vaccinated But you a younger person have not. Can you still see them And is this scenario. A little bit safer for the more vulnerable person. Okay so this is. This is a good one Because it's all about assessing levels of risk. And like i said you know risk is not an all or nothing scenario and there's a lot to work through to make these types of decisions so let's walk through this example so you've decided you really really want to see your grandparents right. Your grandparents has been vaccinated. So you've cut the risk of them getting that bad case of covid down quite a bit. And that's big right before going. I would probably try to quarantine for a while myself Especially if they are in a nursing home. Because i don't wanna bring cove into that facility. Because i'm not just an interact with my grandparents. You know if they're in their own house maybe that's a different story. So that's all like before the visit. And then on the day of the visit one thing i would leave your audience with is when you're seeing anybody like the thing to think about is how do i cut down on the amount of air i am sharing with people right. That's the big if you can carry that one thing in your head. That's the biggest thing because most transmission happens in close contact through the air not through necessarily like groceries or stuff like that so that's important to keep in mind so if i'm going over to my grandmother's and she makes me call her that sam by the way the full grandmother she demands respect. You will not be called. Grandma i would be. I would be wearing a well fitted mask like we talked about. If i could and this is a huge one i would try to take it outside if i could if not i would want to get fresh air circulating in the room because fresh air circulation is one of the best things you can do if you have to be indoors and then the last thing to think about his time right. It's not just proximity. It's also time. So i'd make the visit pretty short too. I mean the cdc suggests less than fifteen minutes if you're indoors but that's variable so it's just about keeping that visit a short as you can and then after the visit like i said same thing is going in. I'd probably quarantine for a bit just to make sure if i got it. You know somehow from being out. And about i don't spread it. Gotcha gotcha We are seeing millions of americans getting the vaccine which sounds good and feels good. But when do we know that were there. Like what percentage of the population needs to be vaccinated before you can have her immunity. Yeah so okay. This is unsurprisingly. Another complicated one so apple over here over what. i'll take it. I i mean it's not my first choice but it's not my last okay. Okay so if you're not familiar with this term herd immunity happens after people have been infected or vaccinated instill. There's essentially nowhere for the virus to go. There's not enough susceptible. People left for corona virus Tune fact so there aren't those like massive outbreaks but there isn't one straightforward number to reach herd immunity a changes based on a lot of things the biggest one probably is the germ itself so for this corona virus. Some public health officials if thrown around that like seventy to eighty five percent of people would need to be vaccinated or infected to. Have you know the level of immunity that we would need and and the difficulty knowing the answer to your question sam like. When do we reach. That number is that we don't actually even know how many people have gotten the corona virus. You know realistically. There's a lot of infections that we don't catch for multiple reasons. There's a lot of people that have a symptomatic infections. That kind of stuff so that complicates we also don't know how long immunity lasts so for some diseases. You get once in your protected for years or your lifetime and that's probably not what's going to happen with this one really got those variants on the scene. You've heard of those variants. Those could play a role here too. So there's a scenario in which this first round the vaccine that folks get first two rounds they'll have to be more vaccine shots down the road. I mean there's the potential for that it would be kind of like a booster situation. Perhaps we don't really know yet right now. It looks like our vaccines are working. Really well but i know that there are some vaccine companies that are looking into developing more vaccines. That would you know basically be kind of a booster situation. So i think you know san we ask like when can we reach her immunity when things go back to normal you know i would argue and people would argue with a gun That herd immunity might not be a reality for this virus like some people might know. It's not it's not that bad. Some places might achieve something close to it but this is a global pandemic right like viruses travel with people who travel so real herd immunity. You know global herd immunity would be tough to achieve. And so you know. I think we have to learn how to live with this virus to be realistic. You know the coronavirus will probably be around to some degree for a long time. And so i think focusing on what we can do you know getting vaccinated if you can continue asking up physically distancing reducing your risk as much as you can the more we do those things right now the faster we will get to our new normal which sam. I am happy to tell you. We'll be much much much more livable than where we are. Now last big picture question for you. Matty like a lot of the answers around these questions are complicated and nuanced and data and information will change over time as scientists learn more things but is there any kind of certainty yet or any kind of forecasting on the uncertainty horizon. About what our springs and summers might look like regarding the scene. Can you forecast what the next few months might deal. I mean say It's it's really really tough. I wish i could give you a better idea of this but what it will say is that i understand the question. And it's it's something that i sit with. You know every single day. It's it's it's really hard right like to know when this thing is going to be over like when things are going to feel better and what a would say is that these vaccines are going to make a huge difference. You know when. I said we're not going to be corona virus free. That doesn't mean that it's going to be in our face like this all the time. I mean i. It could be something similar to the flu. Where still impacts our lives but we have systems to to live with it. And you know if these vaccines are rolled out quickly and equitably. I've heard public health officials talking about this fall or or maybe more at the end of the year like really feeling a lot. More of a return to normal. Even if it's not totally back to normal. But i think more importantly than predicting when it will happen is just you know keeping the faith that it will happen like knowing that this will happen we will return to this newish normal and and that we have agency you know and that we have a say in this so so

I re listened to art of war by sung soon Reread verbal judo and finally got a chance to check out violence a mind by a freeborn. So how was how was the violence. How was the violence of mind. It's a good book so you know. Varga has a unique perspective that differs from most of the instructors in the industry. So it's it's it's an interesting perspective. It's about a ten hour. Why Tech Companies Are Limiting Police Use of Facial Recognition

"All right emily kwong so. We're talking about this announcement from a string of tech companies that they are going gonna put limits on their facial recognition technology especially when it comes to law enforcement amazon microsoft and ibm yes on june eighth. Ibm said it would discontinue general purpose facial recognition or analysis software altogether. Get out of the business completely and it made an impression after. Ibm's big letter. Amazon announced a one year moratorium on sales of they're very popular software recognition spelled with a k. To law enforcement to give congress time to implement appropriate rules so a one year ban. Yes microsoft took it a step further saying it wouldn't sell products to law enforcement at all until a federal law is in place. Here's microsoft president. Brad smith speaking to the washington post we need to use this moment to pursue a strong national law to govern facial recognition that is grounded in the protection of human rights and for matali in conde who has been pushing for regulation changes in tech for years. This was a big deal when these words were coming out of silicon valley. She felt all of the feelings. My initial was thank god. Thank god i was. I was happy. I was pleased. I was optimistic. I was short of breath. I was exhausted. Tally is the ceo of ai. For the people a fellow at both harvard and stanford universities for her. These announcements shifted the conversation. But that's about it. So i'm pleased. It's got us incredibly far but we're by no means the woods not out of the woods because for all of the advancement and facial recognition systems. Still get it wrong. They'll incorrectly match folks what's called a false positive or fail to associate the same person to two different images of false negative. Yeah and what's vaccine. Is these errors are happening. More often. when the machines are analyzing dark-skinned faces and that can disproportionally affect already marginalized communities prone to unconscious bias at the hands of law enforcement leading to false accusations arrests and much worse so until there's action on this metallic said words just aren't enough gotcha. So let's unpack this a little bit. Let's talk about how biased gets into facial recognition systems in the first place. I'd love that okay. So it starts right with how the systems learn to do their jobs. A process known as machine learning so to make facial recognition systems engineers feed algorithms large amounts of what's called training data in this case. That would be pictures of human faces. Yes the way machines learn is that they repeat task again and again and again and again and again developing a statistical model for what a face is supposed to look like so if you wanted to teach the algorithm to recognize a man you'd put in like millions of pictures of men you got it. The machine will then measure the distance between the eyes on each picture the circumference of the nose for example the ear to measurement and over time the machine starts to be able to predict whether the next image it seeing is quote a man which sounds okay right here comes the but but the machine is only a smart as its training data so remember joy ghulam weenie who i mentioned at the top of the episode. Yeah the the mit yes. So she and her colleague timid gabe developed a way to skin color in these training sets and the two they looked at were overwhelmingly composed of lighter skinned subjects. Seventy nine percent for ibi dash a and eighty six percent. For etienne's these are two common data sets that were largely as joy. Put it pale and male. So basically the training data used to create these algorithms is not diverse. And that's how that bias gets in The diversity of human beings is not always being represented in these training sets and so faces outside the systems norm. sometimes don't get recognized. Here's matala explaining what the research meant to her. That goes back to this other issue of not just hiring but a bigger issue of those no one in the team to say that you haven't put all the faces you haven't put all the digital images of all human beings could look like in the way that they sharpen society in order to recognize these faces. And it's so. After realizing how unbalanced these training sets were joy intimidate decided to create their own with equality in race and gender to get a general idea of how facial ai systems performed with a more diverse population so basically they fed it more diverse pictures to to look at. Yeah it was kind of interesting. They used images from the top ten national parliaments in the world with women in power specific yes specifically picking african and european nations and they tested this new data against three different commercially available systems for classifying gender one made by ibm the second microsoft and the third by face plus plus an running these tests joint him knit found clear discrepancies gender and racial lines with darker skinned faces getting mis classified the most. Here's mut-ali again. So one of the things that joy blue armies amazing work looks. That is the coloration between short hair and gender so many many many black women with afros where mislabeled as men mis gendered because the system had trained itself to recognize short hair as a male trait and this research project mattie produced a massive ripple effect further studies legislation in december the national institute of standards and technology or nist published a big paper of its own testing one hundred eighty nine facial recognition algorithms from around the world and they found biases to looking at one global data set some algorithms in their study produced one hundred times more false positives with african and asian faces compared to eastern european ones and when tested using another data set of mug shots from the us. The highest false positives were found among american indians with higher rates in african american and asian populations again depending on the algorithm. Wow yeah that is not what you want from your data. And i'm guessing white. Men benefited from the highest accuracy rates. Yes they did now. The knicks study did conclude that the most accurate algorithms demonstrated far less demographic bias but for multi. This evidence of bias raises a bigger question about the ethics of relying on. Ai systems to classify and police at all the problem with ai. Systems machine learning is that they're really really really good at standard routine tasks and the issue with humans is that we are not standard. We're not routine. Were actually massively messy right. We're not the same but when a police officer searches face in the system. They're not making arrests based on just spat match alone are they. Oh absolutely not. Yeah it's a tool for identifying potential suspects but if you think about how there's already implicit bias in policing critics. A facial recognition are basically saying. It doesn't make sense to embrace technologies riddled with bias to right if all this research has shown. These tools are capable of misidentifying black people. We cannot use biometric tools that discriminate against a group of people who are ready discriminated against within the criminal justice system but policing most specifically mattie. When i first spoke to mut-ali in march she was open to moratoriums on facial. Recognition like amazon is doing buying time for these systems to improve regulations to be put in place but the protests have her views. Because why why am i being moderate with completely reimagined how we interact with technology so now she wants to see facial recognition banned from law enforcement use which some cities in the us have done. Moutallos has tried to push for legislation to outlaw discrimination in technology before but it seems like now people are paying attention and have a language for talking about structural racism that they just didn't have before whether why america listened to me or not. I was gonna continue with this work. I believe that technology should be an empowering force for all people and that's my work but now having old and new ala not just allies but co-conspirators bright. I'm so happy. Because i didn't think would happen in my lifetime and it's an it's

"Others. Say way they don't give you well. Aren't you mr pai forward your mail. It sound. I want to say a couple of things here. A we don't do good things in check on people just because we need them to do it for us. Return you do it because it comes from your heart and that's what you wanna to do so don't do things that you don't feel like doing if you're going to be mad that people aren't doing it back for you. You know what i'm saying like. I think i never take for granted that people are going to give me the same respect or or the same. Love that i show them. Everybody does things differently. And i know even for myself it is a pandemic going on and people have a lot going on right now and so i'm sure. Do they appreciate it when you reach out to them. The the they're very much seem grateful from my bugging for question. Same thing of it would be nice but you can't make people treat you the way that you treat them now. Have you told them. Look i really do need you to check in on me more. It would be helpful for me. Oh absolutely. I'm very vocal person. So if i have a problem i have no problem expressing. That's anyone but again. I still don't get the same energy i'll give and then sometimes i let it go up it off. I don't let it bother me as much. But sometimes like damn ain't nobody gave me chuckled. Like ours the person so extend myself like woodson's themselves like you know there's at this outright and has called you good and on that app and we actually had the founders of it on the breakfast clubs boy elites gates and what is is if you get everybody to sign up you can just put in like your mood so people can see if they feel like they need to reach out to you for any reason and that just goes to your network of people but sometimes you know if you're the one that's always doing the reaching out. I just feel like you do because you wanna do it and you do it from the goodness of your heart if you're doing that because you want people to reciprocate you're always be disappointed by now so and and i'm sure people do like you said they do appreciate it and you got to look at appreciate it if you reach out to me. Sometimes they're just ended text and be like. Hey you know when you have a moment call. I'm going through some things. But like i said like even when i do beneficial things that help other people out that don't benefit me at all. I don't do it because i want. You ought to do it back for me. Just do it. Because i can. You feel like you need somebody to talk to mr pay. Someone to do not not necessarily just wanna feel like i know people are there you understand like like with me they know how do it i know i can call me man. He's going to be from. You're gonna give me a shoulder to lean on. But i don't necessarily have a of people that i could say. Yes definitely i. I can lean on on them. You know what i'm saying. It's not necessarily then. I need them but indicates that i did. I don't necessarily have a lot of people like yeah definitely gonna be there for me. You know man you can lean on me never responding stuff it. Well don't act like i haven't assisted you before you definitely have see what i'm saying. That's what they wanna do that because when you do enough forget and i gotta remind you you just wanna lean automatic. Maybe you need some new friends. Manny maybe maybe maybe everybody thought fresh now but and i think that essentially put a lot on people and if and if you really genuinely feel like you can't rely on your network of people to me it feels like you're shooting yourself and maybe that means that a these real conversations you have to have or be. These aren't really your friends. If you don't feel like you can depend on them very mended at all right. Mr pay it forward by the way you shouldn't you shouldn't do things with people and expect something in return ten times number one to doing something for folks. You don't do things for people because you're expecting something back. You do it because you just doing it out. The goodness of your heart yeah. That's exactly what i just told them. Now that was asked eight hundred five eight five zero five when we got rooms. He s and drake certified lever boy album any news. That you're hearing might be incorrect. Who has the real on. What's going on with drake's new album. All right we'll get into.

We all noticed but one point five million dollars is still a lot of money just just to be just to be spent when it was over done over some years but i still think you know a good financial person would have been on top of that and call it that a long time ago. Yeah i got a couple of different People at check my accounts. I call him buffers to make sure it's supposed to go through especially on big purchases One is my mother and my mother is still evolving my finances to make sure things go straight my wife and then i have a couple of financial advisers. I have my mother. My wife watching the financial advisors but just to make sure i've i've heard so many stories i remember When i first got my check the duma album was using I don't want to say the exact but execs fiance and she wound up stealing millions of dollars from everybody else. So i let her put her cell phone and then she kept on paying a bill late. I think back then. It affected my credit but my credit was so bad. I it didn't matter that much to me. But they kept calling me like bill is due and i kept getting all these notifications but that was only time. They happen as she did. End up paying it and taking her name. "In listeners. Just like you falling. Everybody is dj. Envy angela ye shall amine ago. We ought to breakfast club. Good morning. let's getting some front page news. They yesterday the super bowl champions had their parade. It was on the water though. Tom brady had his two million dollars yacht that he purchased a couple of months ago He was twisted he was drunk. He was having the best time of his life even through the trophy from boat to boat. He was walking out bar. Somebody had that basically walk out. We've all been there before. But e- had a greater now. The most disrespectful ball and boss was seen when he threw the goddamn trophy from one to the next yet and they caught it he good pass and he caught trophies. Like fifty thousand dollars in. It takes much to build from from what i read in. He just tossed it like it was not as seven for one pair. What else we got. Easy well pap is is now putting out a fish sandwich. Flaky flounder. what do you think about that. It's kinda like chicken sandwich but it's fish. Milk is the first time they've ever had a fish sandwich. I think everybody should stick to what it is that they do best. You know what i'm saying. I'm not going to pizza. Hut you know for food for fish. I'm not going to popeye's for fish. I'm going to popeye's chicken go to mcdonald's with fishtail now. Officially internet has definitely been around for a long time so officially at mcdonald's. I go back to the day when officially used to come in the blue rapa. Remember that the blue app. Yes sir. yes ma'am and boy. I would still eat death in his day. I know it's not good for you at all. But man they got. They got the high see orange back at mcdonald's off. They did when when i was young. That's what i used to give them my mail all the time that high see orange that was all. I used to get from mcdonalds. Kfc farley changed the french fries they don't have to wedge anymore got actual french fry on that i wanted to. Kfc wedges point my wife my wife. you're see when when he was young. And i used to my thing. Go there and get twenty chicken tenders in a big boxing wedges for no reason high as hell and even though i right now more state leaders are loosening covid nineteen restrictions but experts are saying it might be too soon and so they're saying we're still not in the clare we might be an. I see them predicting this a downtime. But because of the variance that are spreading we could have a huge uptick. So cuomo announced new york major stadiums and arenas can reopen starting february twenty third with approval from the state health department and chicago. Indoor services bars restaurants and events can expand to a twenty five percent capacity or fifty people per room or floor and that starts actually today as their easing restrictions. they are so many. different cities are easing restrictions. But they're saying a who knows. And if you're fully vaccinated those people can't give quote kobe quarantines by the way so if you get fully vaccinated against corona virus that means that you have to get both doses of the pfizer or modern vaccine you can skip that quarantine if you're exposed to somebody that is infected so that doesn't mean that pay taking precautions but you don't have to quarantine anymore now. More americans are also saying they're willing to take a covid nineteen vaccine but the issue right. Now that we have is supply. So so far about ten percent of americans have gotten at least one dose of two-part vaccines but more people are saying now that they would be willing to take it to take mine. That's what say about away. And i thought they were getting telling us. I don't want to skip the line. But i'm like come on now. I wanna take my vaccine. Now when i wanna i wanna make sure i'm good money. Yeah you know that might be something. That's a requirement to travel. So i could see people taking just because they're gonna have to if they want to go anywhere also good is probably gonna end up being a annual thing for while for several years All right now to your taxes. This year i have promised myself. I'm not going to get an extension pay lake. Because then i ended up paying these fees and so for your twenty twenty taxes. Here's what you need to know. The irs starts accepting federal tax returns. Friday tomorrow so that's later than normal but usually it's in january sometime the second half of january but they needed some more time to program and test it systems to make sure they're ready for this year year's tax season because of the pandemic and all these relief payments that were going out so taxes are still do the traditional date april fifteenth. Unless you file for an extension okay. So like i was saying this year. My plan is to not file for an extension and not have to pay those late filing or late payment penalties. Now if you file for an extension you get that automatic six-month extension and you have to submit that request by april fifteenth and so then That's mixture due date. October fifteen and a refund should be available within twenty one days of the irs. Receiving your return a recorded tax for me so it is what hardcore palpitation. Just thinking about when you start saying taxes get down like what do you want. Now write if you ever get letters in the mail. Doesn't it just it just holding. It ain't nothing you can do about it. I promise you it ain't nothing you can do about it. You got a stimulus payment by the way that money is tax free and your unemployment benefits also that is treated as taxable income. Because they're getting money back so we're happy for you if i wouldn't have no problem paying taxes if i actually knew where my money was going speak. I know if i if i could see the results. You know what. I mean if i could see the schools better and these poor and disenfranchised communities you know what i mean if if our tax payer money was causing other people to have better affordable healthcare great. I would have no problem with it. But i don't know what when he goes. I have no idea who the hell fighters what if you saw somebody. Driving in their license. Plates at fico. "Out the captain matt. I'm telling you tomorrow. Watch this past couple of days all i keep saying to myself as all those members of congress aren't saying the right things should trump be impeached. Es but you know what else they should be calling for. They should be calling for trump to be in jail after that insurrection. Donald trump should spend the rest of his natural born life behind bars. People die should be severe consequences for everybody who participated. that insurrection. wasn't an accident and pains me. How normal these people are acting in regards to this. You had senators josh highly leading the march riots in the capital. How that'll gay. He should be in jail to trump all. His accomplishments accomplishes this was a crime. Trump should be in prison and congress should be calling for him to be in prison. Those people should be and should be in jail under the and there's nothing to say they won't be a criminal trial. "Was happening yes. It's thursday february eleventh mornings. We end the dead of winter. Yes we are the groundhog shadow. It didn't so what does that mean six more weeks of winter. Evily that now. I think if he didn't see shadow. I think it's supposed to be not six weeks six weeks. I don't know what it means. Bird desi a shadow. The next six weeks will be winter. If he doesn't it means early spring. Okay so i don't know if it's true or not but boy if you live in tri state area new york new jersey connecticut. It's an ashtray. Nasties it's still. We still got two feet of snow on the ground from last week lights snow. This morning pulled the snow again this weekend. Yes no one last night. So yeah so it was. It was definitely a nasty. And you know what Let me drop a bomb for myself. Drop a bomb on. Today is the eighteenth year of my debut album. The block party so i put out an album. Eighteen years ago on epic records Shout does storm is so close to five hundred thousand units. No video no single. No radio play. I gotta feed receipts just strictly black and people back then passed out at a party. Is you know you can leave stupid. We used to have block parties back in the day where everybody will come in the street. In close out the strees they'd be playing music and you know different artists. Pull up so it kind of reminded me of that. And that's what. I wanted the album to be just all type of different artists before missile. Jay z was on the album. Dms was on the bourne fabulous on the album. Joe button was on the album Why you ain't getting no sango. Why didn't get no single and video and cool. Would you may include your to label. I don't know if you remember back. Then we kept all the money. We didn't put no money into singles or videos or anything like that. Mix tape sold so we didn't. We saw more than artists pacman. So we didn't have to video. We didn't have to spend many video singles radio. Our radio play in. Just let the music come out and speak for herself. So clean back goes way longer than that and eighteen years like he came out in the nineties. Eighteen years ago wasn't bro. And you're trying to shave off from years put beijing and you beard Nope february eleven. Two thousand in three three was the reason you had to just announce a date february eleven. We're that's big remember. I do remember ads for that. And i remember seeing ads for that. And like i don't know what was what was the double. Xl back then source. I'm not sure double. Xl source at all of them. So i mean it was proper album cover brooke chain on whether it was the town of direct decree. It was a top of a record crate. Oh like it was mixed day so you know we put it out. I mean it's a disease that had album so the fact that we had album and had all these different artists and i remember was like you know to get jay z on album. I used to Hit all bartenders in the city and black jazy comes to the club. Please text me and my manager. And that's how we rhonda j j. j. charles meet thirty thousand. He saw me thirty thousand. He wanted thirty thousand dollars in all twenty s in the air force. One bucks back okay. New styles peon album. And look now you guys are cool to this day and you even had a son this song. This whole album actually predicted the future for you. Black party and look at people have block parties today and so vicious. And i remember the song that was a red man joint on vicious ye. Tell him why they call them vicious. And then you had a somebody in mexico a deeper better better. There was a there was a fake tweet out allegedly fake. They'll tweet out in in the guy said what was it what the guy says the guy was supposed to be envious some guy texting back and forth and then it was like hey. I got a nine and a half inch. I've got a nine and a half inch dildo interviews like you're so vicious. Got a confession to make. That guy was me would envy him. Sorry guys crazy but yes. That's about my album on the twenty anniversary. Got an idea. You should volume to do you trying to be coming to america. You won't put your second thirtieth later. Yeah i mean it's all fun so so for me. It's it's fun but this album was it was no singles. All straight records like joe button. Focus was on there Oh boy cameron was supposed to be on the album. Camera gave it to me but me d'oro include got into a big argument. I didn't think it was a single. And i'm like no i want direct and you know you're right. Listen to them and i took old boy boy depot. It should have been no in. That is right. You should was was no boys. Boy celebrate vicious. It should have been no three in a row. Wish to celebrate. Dj envy today for black history month. Which save you wanted to say. I'm i'm i'm not black. Say i'm not a message. I am black. I'm fully black. Hundred percent. black. Jamie fox was on the al berms stefan. Marberry was on an album so it was it was it was dull. It was it was really really really. Don't what let's get some front page news. Yesterday was the parade for the super bowl. Wins the tampa bay buccaneers. They decided to do it on. The water. Brady leading away in is two million dollar yacht. Brady looked like he had the time of his life. Yesterday i ain't even gonna ask. Yeah he was walking around drunk. He threw the trophy from one boats. Another boat a had a good time yesterday. White privilege is on full display today. I mean you oughta great as white man of all time. You should flex your privilege to the fullest. And the only time. I've ever seen tom brady. Shaken was when he was walking out of that. God damn bar drunk. I've never seen him look so unfocused in my life ever. Yes what else we got you. The second day of donald trump's impeachment trial and we got to see some video footage that has never been seen before in addition they said the evidence shows that donald trump was no innocent bystander. And that he clearly inside the insurrection on january six. Nah some of the key moments there's one capitol police officer capital police officer eugene goodman. He's already been hailed as a hero. throughout this and they had a security video that was played by house impeachment manager showing that he was actually re redirecting the rioters from the path where they were trying to find These lawmakers mitt romney told reporters after the video play. That was very troubling and that he hadn't known he had come that close to the rioters. Now here is the impeachment manager. Stacey plaskitt talking about what happened vice president the speaker of the house the first and second in line to the presidency we're performing their constitutional duties presiding over the election certification and they were put in danger because president trump put a target on their backs and his mom broke into the capital to hunt them down right right and vice president mike pence they showed video of him and they actually had to escort him out the they were trying to reach him. And fortunately eugene goodman that police officer who is now already Been given a promotion. He's the deputy serjeant at arms here is what happened with Mike pence and nancy pelosi by the way was escorted all the way out of the capitol when this was all going on watch how officer goodman provokes the riders and purposefully draws them away from the door to the senate chamber and towards the other officers. Waiting down the hall vice president pence was still in the room near the senate chamber. You can see vice president pence and his family quickly moved down. The stairs as pence was being evacuated. "Glove. Welcome to the show great to be here. Thank you very much all right so right out the gate. What exactly is nihilist. Yeah nihilist developer platform for productivity infrastructure. If you have any Productivity collaboration customer engagement use gays we provide the back end date is and the front end components to quickly and easily build that integration bat and user experience that scheduling flow that intelligence layer that you need to parse your unstructured communications data and to build robust features either internally or externally that get. Get the job done whether it's figuring out how to schedule a meeting across multiple people whether it's figuring out having been sentiment analysis across all the different prospects that you're speaking with whether it's figuring out how to go in the invoice or our state out of pdf or build a knowledge graph of knows who and how strong that connection tranquil. We can help you get bad done with just lines the code. Okay so one of the things that we always talk with founders bound. Is you know a lot of times whether it's marketing talk. Whether it's the description of the product we always wanted to dive deeper because one of the things that we'll find out. I'll use we joke about it. And every episode people that say i is used a l. the most now for probably the most overused letters of all time right because no one knows when you say i. What does that mean talk to me about. What does it customer experience when they use the nautilus platform. So what's something they may be couldn't do before and after implementing you they can. Now do. yeah. I think for us. The interesting thing we found is our product has a lot of capability underneath or even just on off the shelf But folks really start off with just the basic table stakes in analogy. Now we offer and then build on top so for us. What that means is the basic cable. Six optionality is really just like exposing the customers calendars shirring have bidirectional sinking or email off for chats. Were whatever. The communication aspect is within your application. I we help you kind. We make sure that you're able to access the data that not just a huge block of tax that is actually in a readily usable form for both your end users and developers. We're going to be building that analogy so from there Folks ben go into the higher order functionality. Once they are. Crm customer that is able to connect the context of the mailbox into a sales conversation in their crm then you can add on higher order functionality around cinema or whatever else he might be doing this little bit fancier but at the very beginning always like the first building block the foundation which is getting access to the data in the first place. Making sure it's what you need and making sure it's automatically sinking in both directions so that you can receive messages and also send them out with guaranteed engagement. Gotcha so nonetheless. It primarily used by customer service sales organizations or who is who uses the product our product is used by developers so our core audience is the engineering community. Okay and the product community at software companies. So we're a company that focuses on bbc software companies primarily. I would say they're about seventy percent of our customer base. Gotcha so i didn't. I didn't quite understand that part because you had talked about a lot about is with in the communication side so i automatically you know by default assumed to the service organization or sales organization. So what is it that. I guess you one of the things. 'cause there's a stat on your company's website and says that your communication. Api's are currently used globally across more than twenty countries in you naval developers to build apps that integrate with one hundred percent of email calendar and contact providers in as little as four lines of code the value proposition so developers are using nonetheless to build communication tools across different platforms. Is that accurate. That's right. yeah so the distinction here is that there's sort of different layers layer cake that make up the communications. You have at the very top. Your apps is these are your your zooms and your slacks are the software tools that have a very defined very user experience and the company is just geared towards just people onto that set front end user experience against lack zoom they build the tool and they deliver distributor business themselves then where we are sitting beside year down the abstraction layer this is where companies like Like nine listed like We provide the picks and shovels the tools that those apps used the builder optionality. so for us we have a tremendous amount of customers In the space in the marketing space legal h. r. act but the list goes on not because a a lack of folks are part but more show because it's a functionality that's needed across industry got so we're not really a sales tool go. I would say in the first year of the business. We saw tremendous attraction. Crm

Ahmed Elsamadisi Discusses Narrator.ai: Intelligent Analyses

"I'm at welcome to the show. Hey jeff has been. I'm excited to be here. Yeah it's great so let's say i've got a ton of data in my company. I've got marketing data. I've got data on how my customers are interacting with my website. I want to do useful things with that data. It's twenty twenty one. Can i do useful things with that. Data yeah you can do a lot of really incredible things with that data. You can understand how you can actually start changing customer behavior just that understanding how customers behave and figuring out what makes some customers behave better than others and then pushing all your customers to do that. Behavior and that is done by an analysis. The process to get there is a little bit of work but the goal is always the same. It's for you to make better decisions that cause your customers to behave differently which leads them to your company to increase the revenue and decrease their spent. The big question is how we doing right. Yeah exactly. I mean i would be tempted to just hire a data scientist and say hey. Data scientists start to figure out these kinds of problems. Is there anything wrong with that. Approach well the scientists is going to have to do a lot of things before they can use data so your audience probably knows a lot by data but for those who don't data is captured in all these different systems as independent pieces so we often put them all together into. It's called a data warehouse and to give you an idea if you're if you're a small startup like us you have an internal database. You have your segment. You have your ads. You have your email client you have your crm. That's already around like ten thousand raw tables of data and your data. Scientists has to like figure out ways to combine that data and make useful sense out of it and make sure that he's a he or she is able to actually make decisions off of it. That process is what's what's common known as e. l. t. e. l. Is we take the data out of the systems dump it somewhere. And then transformation is when you take that data and structure it to make it useful and most companies spend all their like a lot of their resources and what majority of the work is done in is in this thing that we call transformations. It's taking this data and making it useful so you can begin to analyze it good example i would like to say is like imagine words if you're trying to understand something and you have. All the words in the dictionary is not really useful. There's somebody who has taken a structure into stories that that story can be consumed and with all these different topics and different questions. You often need to create multiple stories so that someone can actually consume data and make meaningful decisions out of it. Gotcha so you've touched on some of the technical difficulties of working with data. It's worth now getting into a little bit. About what you do it narrator explain what narrator does so narrator is about giving customers expert handwriting analyses in minutes so we realized that the questions that everybody's asking like how do i optimize my ltv. How do i decrease my cac. How do i allow attribution model. Should i use. They're all complex questions. That require a lot of analyses. And like i said every analysis requires different data to be transformed so narrator came at the world with a very different angle and we said what if all the data looked the same. What if every single company all their data was transformed to be exact same data model and if it what if it was just one single table that was eleven columns if we can get all the companies to have the exact same data model then we can start reusing analyses and that whole process of transforming data and trying to get the date in the way you needed to answer. Question goes away because we can actually build analysis on top of this standard data model. And what narrow does is it provides that entire end to end experience we help companies take the raw data and make it into our we. Call the activity stream which is the standardization of data. That is the same table for every single company independent of your industry and then because of that structure you can instantly run any of these analyses that we have handwritten by data scientist tour experts in the field and these experts get to write these analyses and test them with both companies and they make sure that they're the best announces that they can produce. They make it available. Narrator and then any company that uses the narrator standardized data model can run that exact analysis in a minute that skips skipping the line of all the hard work that you would have to do and it took us about three years to do this thing which is standardized olive data. So that you can answer any question.

Atlanta Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene is dangerously kooky. Apparently, that’s just what her voters want.

"Meets module retailer green in congress. She represents georgia's fourteenth district right outside atlanta and in life. She represents some views right outside of reality. Marjorie taylor green. She won her house race for a district in northwest georgia. She has in the past promoted. That cunanan conspiracy theories q. Is a patriot. We know that for sure but we do not know who q. Is people believe that q is someone very close to president trump. according to him many in our government are actively worshiping satan or they call moloch. I mean is it going to be true that the child pedophilia and the elites in the washington. Dc is that what we're really going to see them out is it going to be satanic worship q. Was in the house of representatives Loops now marjorie taylor. Green is hardly the first member of congress to hold some out their beliefs. I mean ted cruz believes that bid as working for him but cunanan is not just extreme. It's usual people. How are you going to be in the government and believe that the government is full of satan worshipping sex predators. It must be exhausting to be walking around the halls of congress. Just constantly opening doors like ta. Now just a supply closet. Gotcha now just a copy room fire. Now that's my office man. I'm so lost and it's not just cunanan. In fact it seems like green has a conspiracy theory for every letter of the alphabet the trump backing republican embraces completely false in on conspiracy theories and in a newly uncovered video from twenty eighteen claimed former president obama is muslim. The clintons had jfk junior killed and even questioned whether a plane crashed into the pentagon on nine. Eleven it's odd. There's never any evidence sean. For a plane and the pentagon facebook posts have surfaced in which green called the deadly parkland high school suiting. Fake along with video showing her harassing parkland shooting survivor. David hogg red light gun laws that attack our second amendment right. How do you get avid gun. Owners and people that support the second amendment to give up their guns and go along with anti gun legislation. How do you do that. Maybe you accomplish that by performing mass shooting into a crowd that is very likely to be conservative. Is that what happened in las vegas. Have you seen the picture of ruth. Baiter gingrich walk into the airport. Butler hillary clinton so is interesting. So i do not believe that was ruth negga. I don't think so. I don't need wow okay. So our bg has body double. Hillary clinton has a body double one makes it sound like everyone has their own body double. I mean that's such a silly thing to believe you'll the weekend they're onto us get out of them and raw but the big question is how did osama bin karen get elected to congress in the first place well it turns out she was lucky to be one of nine republicans running for the seat. So everyone's attention was spread around instead of focused on her kind of like how. There are so many different kinds of oreo. Now that you hardly even notice that one of the flavors of human flesh and while some of the cuban on stuff did come out mostly what voters knew about her was that she was a hardcore trump supporter. And yet she sometimes sounded like a crazy person but only in a comforting familiar way. She's a former trough in gym owner. Who has a few roles editor father's construction company but really has no political background at all. America's the greatest country in the world. We need conservatives in washington that will keep it that way. The democrat party is no longer an american party. They are now the party of socialism. They wanna rip our borders wide open. They wanna kill babies up until birth. And maybe even afterwards i have a message for antifa terrorists. Stay the hell out of northwest georgia god. Damn i'm no which house. I'm skipping on halloween. And by the way everyone's freaking out about greens cunanan on beliefs. But if you ask me. The scary cultures involved in is crawford's scientology jumping jacks but yes aside from the cul stuff a lot of greens. Beliefs are typical for today's republicans. But she also has a little extra something that makes the far right. Love her even more. It's racist

Yea so Talk a little bit about briefly because we're going to talk about it basically for an hour but what are you most excited about congressional dish today today. I have just more content. Than i know what to do it right. Castor our wonderful congress which actually keeps getting worse and worse fast over ten thousand pages of legislation over the holidays. And so i got to those. That was not the last one or the new one or both so that was the one hundred sixteenth. We just started the hundred stats teams. Okay so the end of the hundred sixteen. They did pretty much all of their required work in live last few weeks of the the session which is a shots yes. So one of the bills was almost six thousand pages that funded our entire government and had cove relief in it. No one had time rita obviously and that they also authorized oliver wars and so put those together plus all the little bells over ten thousand pieces of art pages of legislation. So i'm sure they did pass a so. We're we're not on a continuing resolution anymore. We are not yes. As of january first government is funded until september thirtieth which is when i expect them to not finish funding. The government again. Cr okay gotcha. Yeah the only reason. I know those

"We had a cabinet where we kept old games user giveaways and this game sitting there for years but i never thought to even look it up any good down. Yes i good just hard to play. We kind of talked about a little bit. But like it's that era of games where they didn't know how to do a lot of things we take for granted now so like i would say like a lot of games that were considered good then just have not aged dwelled just because mechanically games are a lot more solid now so like at the time like you look. I'm just as we were able to put up with a lot of stuff that we would not tolerate now so like that camera would have been like. This is frustrating but this is video games. You know a lot of times. Is this how it was. I agree with you and we didn't know better and we used to. We weren't used anything different. Yeah and now we are exactly like you mentioned like early days of three d platforming where you're like it was hit or abyss whether or not like developers would give your character is shadow when they were jumping onto platforms. You know so like to so many little details like that make life easier and better but they were just figuring stuff out been product of its time over and over and over again having to sit through the animation. Everything time something like that all right. I think we should go. Onto shelf. Stagger box and i will i. I'm gonna put this game in the box. I really liked it. I'm really glad. I played it but i never need to see it again or play it again but it is a very unique and interesting game and i'm really glad to get the play full going into the box. I don't kind of between but still just one of those. How would you make. It was nice to finally play this game after jeff cork plan the seed in my head. Twelve eight years ago. This weird obsession with this very weird game. But he kind of sat at the top of the show. How it's got such a great concept but the execution this is lacking but the concept of getting continuously getting new characters to play with a super fun and it's like smash brothers how you'll play a few matches and then someone else drop and be like. Hey you can play this guy now. It's every time. I saw that a little a little handheld walkman cassette player come up. I'm like i got real excited. Go manhood i get. They're going to be any good another tank. No okay but so. I'm gonna i'm gonna put in the stack because it's fun. It's not great. But i can see going back to it someday Just try unlock more. More of the boards that i have see the first time. And how how would you jeff. Well this was easier to answer because it's just like real life goes on the shelf with all the gamecube games. I love the l. love the game cube. I like just looking at the collection and it's nice to know that like i can always go back to. I guess technically what a what a box is also right. But i'll just gonna put it on the shelf like a true game. Cube head comes over. You know we can kind of give each other ongoing nod and what the hell is gajah force. Yeah you know it. Don't play it. You could go back in time for sure. I think i would have enjoyed it in two thousand three a lot..

Let's Go Back To Venus!

"Ra jeff. So in this episode. We are making the case for exploring venus. Where do you wanna start. Why not start with the history. Venus exploration august twenty six the mariners countdown begins so the very first spacecraft humans ever sent to another planet mariner to and they didn't go to mars. It went to venus the first planet. Humans ever landed a program on that was venus to vienna. That was the soviet union's venera seven That landed on venus's surface in nineteen seventy. Got it okay jeff. So why did planetary exploration start with venus like that well because venus's actually pretty good place to visit it's closer the mars and it looks in some ways a lot like earth similar size thicker atmosphere. Yeah but it's not exactly suitable for humans right venus. It's really hot. I know it's filled with poisonous gases that can kill you. That's true that's all true. Fact check through. Its atmosphere is filled with sulfuric acid and the atmosphere so thick at the surface. It's like being under kilometer of water. Also it's so hot that lead melts. So when the russian venera probes touchdown. Martha gilmore planetary scientist at wesleyan university. She told me they didn't last very long. Those were able to operate for at the best an hour and a half before suffering what we call a thermal death I mean yeah. I mean they did not have a happy end but before they died. They did snap a few grainy photos and what they sent back didn't look great either. This desolate inhospitable world. And nobody's really tried seriously to get any closer since those soviet missions. Yeah and i mean mars by contrast even though it's colder and the atmosphere is thin and it's farther away at least the rovers we send their don't melt. Yeah okay sir. All i can see why. Mars is a favorite destination over venus. Yeah yeah okay. There's an argument to be made but the orbiter said have gone to venus and studied it from above. They're starting to build up this really interesting picture at the planet for starters. Scientists think that venus has had a super interesting past. Gilmore told me that a few billion years ago venus actually had oceans. venus should have had a lot of water and new climate model suggests that water may have persisted for billions of years That's pretty cool. I didn't know venus. Had oceans yeah. Yeah and i mean what's equally. Who is the story of what happened to those oceans so just bear with me for a second Basically the theory is that venus earth had volcanoes that we're putting out tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere now the oceans were scrubbing the atmosphere of the carbon dioxide there literally sucking up the co two as it was released but they couldn't keep up so the co two levels kept rising and just like we see here on earth with global warming The temperature got hotter. The ocean started to evaporate the start to shrink. And if you don't have that ocean you lose that mechanism to pull the o two down into rock and so that co two Has no choice but to stay in the atmosphere so venus keeps getting hotter the disappear entirely the co two levels. Go through the roof. It's this runaway. Greenhouse effect that eventually completely dries the planet out and co two and noxious gases. Blanket the surface. And that's how you get from a nice warm ocean. Venus the past of what we see. Today yeah this is kind of scary to hear in a way jeff because it sounds like climate change on earth i mean. Are we on a road. That's headed towards a venus like future. No no the short answer is no and that's because although the processes are similar there are parallels between earth and venus and climate change. Could get serious. It won't get venus bad because basically the earth is farther from the sun. Gotcha okay so that's not exactly what our earth hasn't store jeff wise. It's still worth it to visit and study venus well. There's this really interesting question of life i mean. I think there's an argument to be made. The venus was more likely to have life on it. In the past the mars ever was venus had this warmer thicker atmosphere and it definitely had oceans. Gilmore thinks that you are some extraterrestrial visitor in your swinging by from some other part of the milky way mars venus and earth would have actually looked a lot alike back. Then you know. Three billion years ago you would have seen three terrestrial planets of which have oceans venus earth and mars and at least on one of those planets life had already evolved and you know has led

No AAPI Cabinet Secretary!? (With Madalene Mielke)

"Madly milk. Welcome back to the motto. Majority podcast today. Thanks so much. Appreciate having a having having you have me. Yeah absolutely well. We love our previous conversation back in episode. One one to talking about your career your life story from the very beginning you know your political career dating back to al gore's presidential campaign. I believe so. I encourage everybody to listen to episode one until after this episode to get to know your personal story a little bit better but today we are going to focus on. You know some current topics. Niger say before we get into that. You are the president and ceo of the organization. Asian pacific american institute for congressional studies or apec. Could you give us a quick overview of the mission and the goal of this organization. You're leading which. I think actually is a good background and foundation for other stuff. We're gonna talk about later on in this interview. Well absolutely so apex down at twenty. Six years ago by former secretary norm annetta when he was a member of congress. He founded it alongside on the congressional asian pacific american caucus k. pack which comprise of the api members of the us house and senate and so apex mission is to increase a representation at all levels of government From community service to elected office and have them participate at all levels of the electoral process. Gotcha so it's interesting that you mention norman. Mineta who i think is one of the first cabinet secretaries of asia-american designed in our country. I don't know the first night check on that. The first right okay. So yeah. I think he was transportation secretary. He was actually commerce. Secretary and president clinton's administration got it and then went to transportation under the bush administration. Gotcha gotcha he has this. Unique history of serving the first cabinet secretary serving both administrations both parties administrations. And really i think started in important. I guess trend of representation that is about to end with the incoming biden administration. And we're talking about as we are a few days before job and becomes president to be inaugurated. This will be the first time in close more than twenty years that they will not be in asia. American or pacific islander as a cabinet secretary in an administration whether it's democrat or republican for the first time. And you as the leader of a pack which is a nonprofit has spoken out quite a bit about a lack of representation. Could you share with us. What is your view of what is about to happen with this. Lack of representation in the incoming administration sure dodge. Obviously we have an incoming vice president. Who is a pi asian american. She south asian descent black vice president-elect kamla harris and also to cabinet level positions. They don't head up an executive department of which there are fifteen. And that's catherine tie. Vr and near attendant. You know the to cabinet. Level positions obviously have a lot of influence and i will just use the word sides the congressional hispanic caucus and the congressional black caucus as well as k. Pack when they sent a joint letter over a hundred and fifteen members of congress to the by the administration saying close to equal equal. And so that is that those were their words and so And so you know. I cabinet secretary heads of an executive department. And there's only fifteen of them and so when you think about that fifteen how's that diversity including asian americans. It doesn't because there isn't one of the fifteen a. I applaud the administration for their work in trying to expand diversity in having openly. Lgbtq individual leading agency And native american woman of half of the cabinet will be women so all those great things. So if you wanted to find diversity and not include asians in the fifteen than i need to ask you. What is your definition of diversity. Because we seem we've seen this play out and other places where the state of washington. I think they're department of education. Basically categorized asian americans as white so obviously a different definition of diversity.

Good day internet at patriotair dot com slash dpd s. Let's start with a few things you should know. Amazon has discontinued its prime pantry. Grocery and household item service products previously available in pantry will now be available like any other products on amazon. So it's not going away to gather but the service itself prime pantry launched in twenty fourteen offering reduced shipping on up to forty five pounds of household goods for a monthly fee. Amazon node vied prime pant pantry subscribers about the closure in december and then issued refunds the. Uk's competition and markets authority launched an investigation into google's privacy sandbox. That would block third party. Cookies in chrome regulator received complaints from the marketers for an open web coalition saying the plan would abuse google's dominant position in online advertising. So the investigations going to evaluate. If the privacy sandbox changes would concentrate advertising spending market share with google samsung launched the galaxy chromebook to a cheaper version of the galaxy chromebook at launched last year so instead of four k it has a ten eighty p lcd screen with less storage fewer cameras less ram. It's also heavier and thicker overall but it also now starts at five hundred forty nine dollars instead of one thousand dollars. That has a thirteen point. Three inch nineteen twenty by ten eight hundred sixteen nine. Lcd touchscreen with the dual core intel seller on five twenty five you upgradable to an intel core. I three ten ten eleven ten one. one zero. You eight gigs. Ram and one hundred twenty five gigs of storage for six hundred ninety nine dollars a shortage of semiconductors affecting automakers. Volkswagen said last month that they needed to adjust first-quarter manufacturing plans around the globe because of the shortage. Now honda says it will cut domestic output by about four thousand cars this month at one of its factories in japan nissan is adjusting production numbers for its note hatchback model and ford has moved up previously planned downtime at a kentucky plant for its sport utility vehicle factory to the jin chips all right. Well we're talking about cars. Let's talk about the the apple car. Yeah a lot of rumors as of late will really over the last few years. But but but the rumors had resurfaced recently and hyundais. Now talking to apple about kerr's so says the company hyundai representative told cnbc quotes. We understand that apple isn't discussion with a variety of global automakers including hyundai motor as the discussion is at its early stage. Nothing has been decided. Korean economic daily said that apple suggested the arrangements and hundred was reviewing the terms that involved e production and also battery development hyundai has had his own battery platform called e. g. m. p. going into production later this year. So might be saying what you're doing. Reuters sources say that apple would like to produce a passenger vehicle by twenty twenty four however might not be that date bloomberg's mark gurman reports in thomas e. v. from apple is five to seven years away and michio recently said he wouldn't be surprised if it takes until twenty twenty eight. Yes what's probably going on. Here is apple and i think this significant part has decided to start investigating how they would build. Whatever it is. They're going to build whether it's a whole car or an integrated platform and they're going to different manufacturers and parts suppliers and folks like magna including hyundai. And saying what are you got. How can you help us with this. And is a great company for this because they make parts they make systems. They make full cars. There's all kinds of services in the conday company that could play a part with apple so it may not be. That apple knows what they want from hyundai. It may just be that they're going and saying hey let's talk. You do a lot of the kinds of things that we think we're going to need. I'm pretty excited about this. I just got my first hyundai ever this year and my perception of this story was weight but hyundai currently uses android auto and a lot of their their cars. So i would love to see. How apple would integrate Hyundai's current technologies into something that is very useful for that apple ecosystem not just looking at e itself but also the The the systems inside of it the controls in how they would manage that four a driver and a passenger in the car. Yeah i mean. I think that's one of the big questions that i have is okay. Let's say let's say it's hyundai that that applet ended up working with with clearly not set in stone at least from what we know at this point. But let's say it's the companies for kicks. Let's imagine that that's what it is. Yeah it is. It is an apple car that hyundai produces a lot of parts for the way that works with lots of other companies to produce other hardware for apple. I mean that that's the loftiest kind of goal that we're looking at and maybe that would take till twenty twenty eight at you know if if apple was lucky. I think it probably has more to do with like you said shannon not that you know android auto wouldn't still be prevalent in a lot of passenger vehicles but maybe at some sort of it's a special relationship. It's it's a special kind of os inside a car that is supposed to you. Know i don't know move some merch because What apple is providing on the software side is is. Is that much more interesting. I really don't know if you look at that. Bloomberg article mark gurman sources are saying that Tesla people that apple has hired are working on things like interior exterior. Drive train stereo. Desist the kinds of things. You need when you're building a car not carting a software platform so then the question becomes is it the apple car period. Maybe hendaye makes it. Maybe somebody else makes it. And you know they'll figure out how to distribute it or is it the apple car by sunday and you go to hyundai dealership to buy it the way you went to an. At and t. store to an apple iphone but it's really apples car in cooperation with sunday. Are there multiple partners. I mean that's all the kind of stuff we're waiting to see but it really does feel like we have gotten to the point where this is no longer just yeah. They're working on project titan. They don't know what they're gonna do to. They have an idea. It's more than just software and they're working out the details. Maybe they don't even know that yet. Well i'm interested to see what happens but we also have some other news. Security among the systems impacted by the solar winds attack is the electron filing system. Used by the us federal courts at investigation is underway to determine if confidentiality of documents filed with the courts was breached and as a result starting wednesday confidential documents filed with the courts will be stored on standalone systems. Not uploaded big difference so these are documents sealed from public access because they contain sensitive information like investigative techniques identities of informants and a lot more other. Us federal agencies affected included the justice department the state treasury and energy departments as well solar winds has engaged. The krebs stay most security consulting group to help deal with this attack. That firm was formed by alex. Stamos the former chief security officer at yahoo and facebook and chris krebs the former director of the us cybersecurity and infrastructure security agency or sisa. So krebs was fired last month. By the president after finding no evidence of with voting systems in the twenty twenty election. Yeah stamos first of all brilliant for those two to team up and smart for solar winds to engage them for what they say is Helping with transparency with companies that are affected But this we we are not done finding out how bad this is. There are reports that there may have been other ways that this whoever is behind this intruded beyond just solar winds. They're finding evidence of that. They have not been able to root out the people that got into this vulnerability from all systems yet. They're still in there in a lot of cases. And you know this. This kind of confidential information is exactly the kind of thing you fear that someone would get intruding into a government system informants investigative techniques that you can now learn from to evade being prosecuted or caught yourself. That's that's crown jewel type stuff it's it's very interesting. In fact krebs spoke on record saying that it could potentially take years to figure out how deep the solar winds attack actually went and how many different kinds of infrastructure. You know brands and everything that it might have affected so this is not something. That's going to die anytime soon. I'm glad that they are reaching out. Craig's and stay most though because that i agree with you tom. It's excellent. excellent team roku made a few interesting announcements roku says. Npd data shows that the roku s was the top selling smarter operating system in the us and canada in two thousand twenty thirty one percent market share in canada. Thirty eight percent in the united states That's pushed the samsung's tizen number two. At least we don't actually know samsung's ties and was number. One in two thousand nineteen also announced a wireless soundbar reference design that uses wifi for its roku. Tv ready program remember. Last year roku announced the program which had a designed for wired. Sound bars. The program includes tcl. Pokemon on an element has just announced. They'll join as well with two point. Two point one ready sound bars roku tv ready to expand internationally later this year as well. But here's the big roku news roku has agreed to acquire exclusive global distribution rights to more than seventy five Shows documentaries some of which had not been released before qube shutdown. So there'll be some new stuff that nobody's ever seen after their exclusivity deal expires. That'll happen in a bit more than a year. Depending on the show roku will still have the rights to show the content just not exclusively until thousand twenty seven the content will have to be presented in original increments of ten minutes or less. The deal doesn't let them stitch it altogether. The content will be added to the more than forty thousand movies and tv shows already available. In the roku channel shows include from Be anyway punked. Murder house. Flip and dummy which stars anna kendrick. I never watched the new punk. I heard had its moments. The whole qube thing. It's really interesting to me because it was sort of like. It crashed and burned so quickly. And there's a lotta shot and friday around folks in the industry about it. And i think that's not because qube was doing things wrong. It was because the company had raised so much money time. Because you know. They had meg whitman. Jeffrey katzenberg who are you know. Heavy hitters and there was a little bit of like you are being to embassies and therefore you shall fail. The company did fail and the idea that some creators will have a new life on another platform shows. That just don't even saw but people still worked on. And maybe you're really good. I think this this makes a lotta sense and good for roku to get exclusivity for at least a few years so does roku have to wait at all in order to start showing this content or can happen immediately. I don't know when the start date. Whenever the deal is you know goes into effect. Then they'll immediately be able to to show it so you know within a month or so it would be my guess anyway but no they. They don't have once. The deal is actually in effect. They don't have to wait. What's going on here. is that the baby. Production companies own the rights to their own stuff but they have a two year exclusive for each one of their shows with qube and those two year exclusives are now being transferred to roku so roka will be able to have the exclusive for the remainder of whatever. The period was with quick. That's why it's more a year. Exclusively goes away then they still have the right to show it until twenty twenty seven but the production companies that made it can now start shopping at around to other places as well so the production companies do hold the content and remember this is just the content. Qube is still in a over. Its turnstile technology which is holding it up from selling its technology and i would expect once it resolves that lawsuit should resolve it in a way that they still hold their technology. They'll sell that to so this isn't the last you're going to hear could be selling off a part of it. I would imagine. Gotcha yeah that whole. The whole technology part of qube was again was an ambitious thing that was released at a very inopportune time in twenty twenty when everyone was like. We're just sitting at home like we don't need this like mobile phone technology. It's like cool that you can shifted around but you can't even cast thing. I mean the company did fix that pretty soon after allow about she was just. I mean it's just did. The timing couldn't be worse but that technology when you think of it in a variety of other form factors such as monitors that swivel talked about some of those yesterday. I don't know that qube or tiktok or snapchat or all of the stuff where we're like. Oh yeah that's the. That's the portrait view. Rather than landscape view. That works for certain apps is is is all that this is four. I think there's more to it So we'll see what happens and there's patents and things that are always valuable because you can use those to extract some concessions and money and stuff. So yeah expect that all to come join the conversation in our discord which you can join by linking to a patriotic. Can't get in there and talk about your favourite qube shows with all the other discord folks. Just lincoln to your patriotic out at patriotair dot com slash. Dpd s all right shannon. How do you clone a security key. Well i i will say please do not stop using your security keys because of this story i will explain it. Researchers from ninja lab published a paper on thursday showing how you could clone a google tightened security gate this is a two factor authentication key which is very similar to a you. Be key that you have to plug in or tap in order to access an account after putting in your username or your password credentials. Were both so in order to pull off the clone. You would need physical access to the key for about ten hours. Sometimes a minimum of ten hours just kind of depends on how good you are at this. About twelve thousand dollars worth of equipment physical equipment and custom software and some advanced skills in electrical engineering and cryptography as well. So you have to remove the chip and then take measurements of it at a being registered on each account that you went to attack the measurements observe electro magnetic radiation as the chip generates digital signatures that let the attacker slowly deduced the private key so measurements take about six hours per account. That's not including taking apart. The original tighten security key putting it back together. Then you need to seal the chip back into its case. You also need the targets password in order for this to work. So the reason it works is because of vulnerability in the security hardware chip residing within the google titan key and that is called an eighty seven hundred x by this company called. Xp if it's exploited in attacker could grab the elliptic curve cryptographic private key for the account and the same chip is actually found in other two factor. Authentication physical tokens as well like There's a ubiquity that it's found in but chances of attack or very very minimal given the scope of the attack so if you do all of this without the target ever noticing then they would never duplicated key but again given the scope given how much it costs and everything behind the scenes probably when it happened to normal user. The point of these security keys being the best way to use For two factor. Is that you can't even get at your private key right you. Nobody has to be able to get in there like the chip. Just doesn't make it available so the fact that they were able to get in there and get it is huge. You know the fact that they were able to do this is significant. But i mean if you're not a target of an advanced persistent threat. You don't need to worry about this. No one's going to go to the trouble to do this. And even if you're a target. I would guess shannon that most of them probably would be able to notice if someone took their key for ten hours or more you. You likely likely would especially since a lot of people with hardware tokens like google titan will stick them on a on their keychain for example like with their house keys or whatever wherever they keep all those personal physical devices that they don't want lost or stolen they keep them all on engaging so if somebody was to take one of these out of your purse out of your gym locker wherever it might be and remove it for like ten hour street minimum. You would likely know that this would have happened. the neat thing about these chips inside of these. Google tightened security keys. And any other cryptographic hardware tokens like these is that. Even the manufacturer doesn't know the private key so the fact that they were able to find vulnerability on these specific chipsets is really interesting. And i think that's the important bit of that. Is is even though the google titan like the end all be all of really excellent. Two factor authentication. There's always. The potential that vulnerabilities can be found. So i'm happy that this research came out. It's so fascinating and it's so interesting in this means that an x. p. and other security chipset manufacturers that sell these teeny tiny chips to google or whoever the company might be They can build on this. They can research and figure out what the next version of their chipset needs to entail in order to not be vulnerable to this again in the future. Yeah i mean this is really a good security story right. We finally figured out because there's always a way right. We finally figured out the way you get the private key out of a security key and guess what it's really hard takes a long time and now that we know it we can make it even harder and hopefully you know push that barrier out even further and even if somebody did have time to do this and you didn't notice i was reading the paper because i'm a huge nerd and they go as far as using fuming fuming nitric acid in order to get like melt the epoxy off of the original google titan. How are you going to put that back together. In order for somebody to not notice like there's a lot of intricacies with this attack in order for it to actually be pulled off so chances are very very slim that somebody would be able to pull off so again as i said at the very beginning. Don't stop using your google tightened security key if you have one keep using it because chances are you would never be attacked with this. Just just know if you haven't seen it in ten hours look together strange. This is going to be in a movie though. I'm calling that shot right now. We're gonna we're gonna see this movie. Where like i hope so. Somebody goes into surgery and they take his key and they go out and do all this and they slip it back in because ten hours later. He wakes up from anesthesia on something like that. I just hope they talked to the researchers so they actually show it off right. Yeah Sony tv and audio announcements Starting with details for its own tv lineup. Sticking with lead ravi x four k and k. Tv's will support four k at one hundred twenty hertz variable refresh rate vr as well as a l l m low latency mode and e arc. These are all things that are important. If you've got a ps five now you've got sony. Tv they can go. That sony also has an improved a chip that is going to improve the picture and sound positioning. So it aligns with what you see on the screen. Sony's master series. Tv's will come with a sensor that adjusts white balanced immense. Your ambiente color temp. You don't have to do anything they'll just do it. Also an aluminum heat shield. That will make for brighter. All the sets will support. Hdmi two point one. Another big one for ps five dolby vision hdr angle tv. Sony also announced. It's three hundred sixty reality audio platform if you're not familiar with three hundred sixty degree audio places instruments and vocals in a virtual sound field around your head but using just the one speaker so you can do this in an amazon echo or google. Home sony will start streaming video with three sixty audio later this year. Starting with concert from zara larsson on january eleventh. And somebody's gonna make speakers that support this. It'll be may supported by other speakers as well. But sony is going to put out the are five thousand and three thousand They've got that dark cloth. Surface that all these speakers seem to have these days with either bronze or silver accents. Work with google and amazon assistance and can connect to select sony abroad via. Tv's as well as supporting wi fi bluetooth. Spotify connect in google cast. The speakers do automated calibration to the room. They're in donut. The press a button for that. Either and we'll simulate three hundred sixty degree audio for stereo tracks as well. The five thousand cost five hundred pounds or five hundred ninety nine euros no. Us price yet on the three thousand two hundred eighty pounds. Three hundred fifty nine euros. This seems this. Seems like it's shaping up to be one of the trends. Is this the sort of three hundred sixty degree audio while you're listening to your black bank and it's just one speaker or potentially a couple of speakers ativan. Maybe yeah yeah already supported. Yeah there's less of kind of like What do i have to do. Five point one surround or at least get a couple of speakers and make them a stereo pair type thing. I really haven't heard this in. I don't know. I used to hang out at magnolia at best. Buy all the time. And just like geek out on stuff like this. of course. this technology wasn't around at the time. But it's really come on. Let's turn on some stuff and see the speakers. Do it works well. Then that's awesome my first reaction because i got rid of my kind of pants speakers some years ago because friend of mine needed them more than i did and i didn't have room in my apartment but i miss that i'm also an a. A permanent now that's smaller and kind of has a lot of weird angles and i find audio bounces off walls in wiz. That wouldn't if it was more of a square box broom So i'm not sure that i'm the perfect target market for this. You're the you're the one puts this through its paces and sees if it really works. Yeah if i could actually work as advertised again with some funny angles in a big old frame. Then i'm i'm really into this and i've always been. I don't have a sony. Tv currently sorry zony. But i was abroad. Bravi a person for years. Nears i think what the new bravi line is coming out with. Looks really nice. And i mean not totally in the market for a new tv. But i like the fact that i might get a new sony again paired up with a sony speaker. You got three six. Yeah already got all this stuff. It's going to be a messed anyway. You slice it. But i like. I like this to be sixty reality audio platform. What would you have set up in your house. I was straight up going to mention sonos because if if it doesn't have the connectability to be able to work with all of my other platforms that currently have invested in. Then chances are i wouldn't buy it. So i do have sono says in my house and i do have some issues connecting those with other speakers in the household to like like my google hub for example so the fact that this works with google and amazon assistant the speaker specifically The audio speakers. I think that's pretty cool. I like that. They are bringing that in and i am interested because i do live in a household. That has very high ceilings. How this would work in that kind of environment. So yeah. I'm very interested in the audio aspect. Well you might also be interested in what colour has come out. Oh yes the folks who make things like toilets and and sinks and lots of appliances however. Been a real. Cas mainstay for the last few years for some cool innovations and this year is no different. Even though we're not in vegas koehler has a new smart bathtub called the stillness bath. That lets you use an app or use your voice using google or amazon's assistance to fill up the water or perhaps set the mood by changing the color of the lights around the tab or even add some fog. You know you wanna kind of pretend like you're in the then present routines also turn on features in a certain orders if you wanna get kind of creative. that's cool. Yeah the certain amount of limitations with the base model and the base model is not cheap so temperature and depth control models alone will cost around eight thousand six hundred ninety eight dollars. That's right it's almost nine thousand dollar bathtub. If you want the experience tower that lets you activate fog and aromatherapy. That will run you just over ten thousand dollars. Both models are available in july. There are real things and if you want the version with lights and floor grades for overflow fifteen thousand nine hundred ninety eight dollars available. This october signed me off. I won't be buying those. Nope not even a little bit but we could have taken a bath at s in the new in the pre show roger was like. Why would you want fog. It's like this. Why does anyone want to be on. Yeah racist luxury suites in hotels for sure as well as apple's houses sure yeah something well. Yeah it's it's that like hey look at what my bath can do people go. Wow very fancy and then you know ten years from now will be like remember when we thought it was fancied to talk to your bathtub so that it would start filling up without touching it but Yeah it's it's somewhat silly because of the price. But i'm not really much of a bath person but they do look very nice all right. Let's check out the mail bag but ads do it. Nick wrote in with a pronunciation. Ramps own neck. You are not alone he says. Ac's rog is an initial list. Because it's our og like fbi or cia. People say ron yet. They're lower end gaming brand tough not initially them. It's an acronym like scuba or produce you f but pronounced off. It's like ace's can't make up their name minds. Then there's strict which is our subbrand strikes as a word it's a completely nonsensical made up word. But it's a word and you pronounce it as such nick as honestly as somebody. That buys a lot of hardware. Because i've rarely had a bad experience with them over the past twenty years. I am baffled by some branding decisions. The one the bugs me. The most is the strict subbrand. Sometimes acis makes the tricks products. The high end product in the product stock yet other times. It's a mid range product. Would it be too much to ask for consistency and product. Branding twenty twenty one. Yes apparently apparently we feel your pain. Nick i love the dichter's just like i just need to vent you guys. Let me let me let me get this up. Just we appreciate that. Yeah i mean i. i'm with you nick. The Why Nots of Starting Another Podcast in 2021

"We're talking about the one noughts of starting yet. Another podcast something. We've all thought probably bad in the past at some point. If you coming into starving you e- you might be thinking. All is now the time to release that other show that i've been planning on their awesome reasons to do that. Which we covered. I think now two episodes ago. Today i just a few reasons. Why maybe it's not a great idea. Either right now. Ole maybe not such a great idea at all so this is going to be pretty rapid fire at least is rapid fars moi condo. Low energy delivery can get say here. We go number one. Don't start another podcast. If you're already struggling to find the time to produce edit release and promote your current shy so if this other show you're planning on creating is to replace your current shire and the plan is to transition away from your current chart and only the new shire then go for it. That san super cool. But if you're planning to do by showers and you're hoping to keep your current show at the same level of quality daren't stott another shower or at the very least daren't stop that other shirt yet your current shar manageable coming out on tom consistent in quality. And if there's something bad that's noting joyo or you're starting to find something about it. Stressful analyze those and try to turn that around first before you put the stress of yet another hall. Production on top of your current podcast. So number two. The other podcast. The next broadcast the additional podcast. It's in a fashionable nash. Ole subs owner. So you as a person don't have a lot of interest in the actual subject. You're just doing it because you think that there's an audience there and you want to jump on the bandwagon unless it's something you truly care about also about say something else unless it's something you truly care about daren't stott another shy just because the genre of show is popular does tend to be the tops of genres to get very crowded very quickly and they conned of. I need to be there to kind of showers or fear of missing out conned of shows. So not good for anybody number three you'll copying the kore- of someone in podcasting or in media that has a bigger profile than you do. And i started a second shirt about x. So you don't necessarily need to stop a schaub at the same topic. What you're doing is copying the fact that they have more than one. Shar your favorite podcast dot to solid projects and and now the show is completely different and suddenly. You're planning to go from one podcast which you've managed to make good. And hopefully it's good gotcha. Full attention to potentially four different shows are avant darned day that people. I've done that to be honest. I've done all these things in the last eight to nine years and that came down to a little bit of fear of missing at a little bit of copying people that were bigger in podcasting but also there were times where having two shows three shows was great like it is now me where i have a more realistic relational etc. Full the hull collection. There were times where it worked. Really well and tom's were really really didn't and my mind shall at the time suffered so today's not a bet stealing mutual fund. No telling you not to do something i mean. We did a whole episode on why you should start a second shy this really legitimate reasons for getting out there and starting mold one podcast but to some today. If you don't have the tom or racehorses to do a good job of a second show oh maintain the quality of your current shy and annual. You're not actually interested in the topic. You just feel like you have to be in this other genre is well neither those pass muster when it comes to producing a second show

JRPG Report Episode 144 - The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Black First Details - burst 02

"Hello friends welcome back to the show. This is the g. rpg. Report episode one hundred and forty five little bit weird this week and we knew it was going to be with christmas eve falling on our normal release date and of course christmas the next day and there must situation My little girl's birthday being the day after christmas so yeah we get a bang bang. Bang three a craziness there. Obviously just mitt that there was really no time to reporter Record a podcast. Even before christmas was just too hectic so We're recording this on saturday. The twenty seventh just a couple days left in twenty twenty. Goodbye rents But we've got a lot of cool things to talk about today. I kinda wanna wrap up all the stuff that we've missed as it's been nine days since our last pockets. No i'm sorry that's not even right. That is fuzzy. Math is been eleven days since our last podcast. So we've got a few things to go over That have popped off. Since then. And i wanna kinda look look forward to sometime this week. Mean jordan are going to get together and kind of talk about What games we really loud from. Twenty twenty maybe even discussed some Game of the year options and then look forward to twenty twenty one as Right off the bat. We got a bunch of games coming out in the beginning of the first the new year. We got to tell you rods two. You've got bravely default to you've got he's nine And the newly Confirmed for some of five strikers. Just a name The the big big ones I'm sure there'll be others. That will be unfortunately lost in the in the way. So we're going to record that sometime this week and In lieu of any news breaking. I may just make that part of the normal podcast unsure on that. But let's get into it. I hope you guys had a wonderful christmas holiday I didn't have any games that i particularly wanted that. We're already out. So i just kind of asked Asked the parents for Email confirmation that beginning Today risa to when it comes out on january twenty six that was cool and i did end up much too. Many of your delight. Hopefully i'm finally going to take a dive into these series. I picked up. Yee's eight for only twenty dollars on the ps story. I could not refuse as the physical version just refuses to ever go down in price so i figured this was by far the best opportunity. Get in on. What many consider to be a very very good. Jr pg and at some point. I'll be playing. It don't really know when that's going to be but that's enough rambling We did have fell. Calm day Twenty twenty winter addition and we got a few tidbits of information about the new legend of heroes. Toddle kiro no koseki if you notice the thumbnail for this Podcast are the two newest main characters is a third as well but these They dig use some high-rise resolution images of the to unsure why the third one was kind of like ashaari pow We'll get you later but still no names for these two characters but we do have a bit of information stuff. You see that image. There's a couple other on our facebook and twitter feed of those two characters while they are. I say have that trails feel to them. I do kind of agree with what president condo said last time that at mediate Glance they don't appear to be trails characters. And i believe that lies in the fact that they are from calvert So they're going to look a little bit different and we'll talk about that in just a little bit. These illustrations were drawn by katsumi. Nama and the other characters are from alcom. Like i said the character's names were not announced to this game is coming out sometime in twenty twenty one in japan so those were the images. There were some other ones as well. If you'd like to see all those. I did put up a slide show video on our youtube channel. So you can check those out if you don't feel like clicking through pictures of via the website here is what we do know and i will just read this to you as this is the about for the new age of heroes karoo new koseki beyond the blue sky ahead of flashing light a land. A dawning resides cuba. There's no spoilers going on in here. This is all preliminary stuff in the news story arc. So we don't have to worry about that type of stuff the ladder this latter half of the trails. There is about to begin. The setting moved to the calvert republic in two thousand and twenty one foul calm release. Legend heroes kernigan the latest entering the trail serious as its fortieth anniversary rumors of work. The calvert nation is a multi ethnic nation experiencing unprecedented economic growth. Brought about by post war reparations. In a corner of the capital of a huge nation were immigration issues bringing about political instability. Okay well maybe. There are some spoilers in here okay. let's just get to the best. I'm sorry i read that. And i didn't think about it until just now okay. The command style action time bow system. You didn't previous trails. Titles has been revamped and that's going to set up an from a couple people. Let's just see what they said. Seamlessly transitioned from action oriented field battles to turn based commands battle to turn based command battle systems while making use of the unique elements the sixth generation combat or meant would try to pronounce his last time. I'm not sure how it is x. I f. r. x. i. p. h. a. z. Feel in a ballots to evolve from the previous trails titles. Okay so what does that mean. I don't. I don't know i really don't know how to had say seamlessly transition from action oriented field battles to turn based command battle systems I i mean obviously there's a bit of an extra element when you strike the enemies on the field in order to go into the turn based battle i. I need to see this in action to really know what they're even beginning to talk about would just have to wait and see You will feature many elements you laws. It's setting including a topics system which enabled together until such topics by communicating with. Mpc's out towns tra- gate situations in your favor when you act as a spray gun and that is the The character it's basically a detective. But they're calling them spring and alignment flame system. In which characters three alignments great and chaotic fluctuate depending on your own style influencing various status allies and adversaries and even scenario developments please look forward to allege heroes lowest entrance toasters depicted enrich expression by thumbs new original ingen. So that's that's pretty cool Here's what how they set up the situation and I get. I don't wanna get too much into this. The to emit the two people that you see in the image the one is the one call the speaker those are they say sometimes detective somedays negotiators and other days as bounty hunters. They're up for any job from any client. That's pretty cool And then the other one is Say to be a school girl wearing uniform. Prestigious school visits a rundown building located in old town in cowards capital. So that's the setting that's beginning of it. You can check out those images. Like i said there's a third character in the images as well with the two swords on his back and some long hair but we don't have any details. There is a battle scene that shows what looks like to be a craft or an art powering up but that from that snippet it does look to be turn based. So don't i'm so confused as to what to make. But i'm certainly excited about this one. But the lack of details and the promise of something new is leading to some question marks popping up. And i don't necessarily love that idea but it is what it is and until we learn a little bit more. It's just going to be speculation Unfortunately though that wasn't the only bit of information. And i'm sure we'll have a bunch more but Foul calm day twenty twenty winter. Also let us know about and this is not really affecting us as much. But they did. Say that a hatch marco koseki which is the one before this one and after cold steel four Clouded leopard entertainment will release a switch. Pc esteemed version of the game Sometime in summer. Twenty twenty one in japan in asia. I'm nearly positive. That's the same company that handled The transition for coastal three and four to the top of my head. So i came out for. Ps four in japan on august twenty seventh. So you know nearly a year later. They're talking summer to get that Switch pc version now. It handles the asian side of this and i s america handles the translation available. At least they have for the past two games In the cold still series in the west still no confirmation that that translation is ongoing. That have to assume that it is unless it's being handled by other parties I mean exceed did do the first two trills of cold steel games but at imagine that they are going to do this hedge amari as well and as soon as i hear something about that it will happen. It's certainly a good thing that this is happening and It could lead to a speedier at least for these games in the west. But like i said still no information on unfortunately. The last thing that they talked about was not briefly. Mentioned this last time the natto. noca- seki game. That is coming out in japan for For playstation four. This was the old Two thousand twelve least. Psp action rpg though some new details and images kinda showing the ps p version versus the Ps four version of it They're sent opposites gonna run at sixty frames per second on. Ps four with more vibrant graphics. Not being obviously these are things that you'd want to have updated from an old old system user interface options One thing that i thought was very interesting. And i'm not to say what they say. This game is not connected to the trails game. However the main character's name is now utah herschel now you trails players especially cold. Steel will know towa. Her last name is hershal So what they're they say there's no connection but then there's a connection is the protagonist and a boy from that island who attends and academy in saint elise. Those aren't you know aren't names that i recognized the from the trails series so it is very very interesting and i would be would like to know what that connection is at kind of read through it. You can read through the tales. Like i said before i am lower on the percentage scale To say of this game was actually going to make it over here or not. I if i if you say your day is gonna come today out outs. Action say no but would just have to wait and see. The original game did not look super impressive. So this isn't a game that i'm all that excited about to begin with but we'll have to. We'll just have to wait and see if that indeed happens for a lot of switch owners the next. Gop g they will more than likely be picking up is going to be bravely default to gain closer and closer to that february twenty. Sixth rolled wide release date friend square annex released new trailer for it albeit in japanese and have still not seen an english version of this yet so it talks all well. Supposedly it talks about wiz walt. The country established by those mejia's. They did it themselves to studies. The magic research institute But the the real kicker with this one and you can see it. Is this places overgrown. It looks like it was built kind of in the middle of it are on top of a giant tree. And there's just this tree just going right up through entire town is really cool again Trailer is how long was trailer of about three and a half minutes. Like i said in japanese so you can't really tell what's going on but it is kind of cool to see some of the visuals in action Four it but if you're elected shake those game out for yourself you can check out the demo for it It is now live on the east shop and One who feels the demo before its release will even pick up one hundred mine. Intendo platinum points here is the Short official description of the demo experienced the games at risk and reward system character strategy and stunning visuals in the latest braley default to final demo in this demo. The games four men characters are already other journey with jobson abilities at their disposal. I downloaded this. The other night. as if getting the switch away from my kid was hard enough with minecraft previously The kid did pretty good for Christmas and her birthday. And i now had to contend with her own copy of animal crossing so she and my wife can play two switches and who copies of animal crossing so they can will each other's islands. I know she also got the Spyro trilogy which. I really enjoyed those games growing up. So i can't wait to play those with her and relive those moments and she picked up mario maker to so. I'm not seeing that switch for a while. Maybe once she goes to sleep. If i don't have anything to play eck fired that demo. I would like to see how it is shaping up as will If you've got some free time and you're looking for d'you monster hunter rise. There are to say ten videos in total. Let's do a little no here. That's just the winner that don't into it's been Hit with a couple delays here lately. Not sure how much. Everything's pandemic related at this point but how much they just wanna fine tune things in. They're not in the main game this something post post content but the fact that they're in their would open the door to other characters popping up from other games as well. So that's a cool thing The world inside of an item. I m worlds have mended. Detailed in this article on worlds are divided into several fours slash layers and the items level increases with every four. That you clear says weapons become stronger as they level up. You can clear there either. Worlds to power them up once. An item is leveled up. You can get the same item at the same level from then on pretty cool feature of the sky series all these images i took input into a slide show. You can check that out on our youtube channel so you can dispatch companions into item worlds to research them. There's a new team attack system with up to ten characters in it. I'm at risk of offending people. I understand how they're supposed to be pronounced So yeah they're gonna add them in there as as post content deal see. That's the type of thing. Like i would think you'd be okay with paying for because that's obviously not a part of disguise six. They are previous games characters in new content. So take how you feel about. Dlc that is that's one thing i think is is no k To do speaking of all those previous disguised characters they are all assembled in the rpg. I'm really going to have to search my feelings. That i think is flowing anything to if it's going to be found pacers. Seven remastered or a remake rather or four. It's it's really tough there. There's my heart says one thing amonte says another and there's different things to have to consider overall ought to make that final decision here real soon on what that What was looking forward to our thoughts here are coming out this week on. Kyle duncan beckett. Episode 33: Giving Gun Owners Their Seat at the Table

"And i was curious that when you heard that a gun. Violence prevention organization wanted you to come on air for a podcast. What was your first thought. I was worried that by the time the podcast was over That would be the end of the affiliation with brady as they don't say anything that they find to objectionable Was the first thought that went through. The second thought was if it's if it's helpful to put my voice into this conversation than a more than willing to do that and i. I am super excited that you're here for this because something that i always like to think about in this conversation is the fact that you there are three hundred ninety three million guns out there in this country that people own people like you and me own these on these guns and there are policies practices procedures that we all talk about wanting to advocate for your we can pass all of the great laws we can. We can strengthen the policies around getting a gun but if we're not bringing voices into the conversation they're still going to be three hundred ninety three million guns out there with people who don't want to be part don't feel like they're part of it don't feel heard in the conversation and so expanding this table of who's about gun. Violence prevention is super important for me to do so. I'm i'm super glad that you're here and would would like to hear from you a little bit about your what. What brought you to the point of being willing to share your voice in this conversation because it. It's not always easy. sure. I think it's kind of for me. The intersection of of three disparate. Things coming together So one. I'm a dad. I have a nine year old kid. Who's amazing and fantastic. I grew up hunting and shooting Recreationally it's always been something that we did for fun And i've got a nine year old daughter who's a vegetarian. Living in manhattan whose regularly scolding her father for all sorts of different sends. But and trying to figure out how to make a a safer world for for a kid There's something about waking up and talking in your kid at night and seeing going. Wow i this is the scary when she comes home and talks about the the shooter drills that they do at school When you hear the pop pop sound at night and you know what it is because you should guns and it's not a car backfire. So that's that's part of it coming to it as a father in trying to come to terms with beliefs that i may have once held that no longer seem as relevant when you're looking at innocent nine year old kid part of it second part i said in the introduction. I'm a public school principal. Some actually the one running the shooter drills. I'm the one trying to figure out what happens if somebody comes into our school with a gun you know. How many people are we gonna lose. Who get shot. I how we lock down classrooms. How do we hide kids. How do we go through this whole process. It's become such a normalized experience for my students in. That should give everybody pause. When you're trying to figure out how to hide a eleven year old from a potential shooting and when we sat down and start looking at it and trying to figure out that actually seems more likely than a fire at this point we grew up doing fire drills and now the fact that somebody coming in intentionally to shoot up a school seems i don't know the stats on it But it seems like at least in my mind. A more likely scenario where i work. That's i mean. It's the intersection of those places. That really brought me in thinking and then the last part was a a frustration. I actually met somebody who's in the brady foundation. My buddy of mine who's a principal of another public school up in new york and he was talking about it. And i i kind of was snarky and i said oh another organization that doesn't know anything about guns making you know gun policy regulations and he said what i said. When was the last time you shotgun. He he said. I shot one. I think once. I was in boy scout camp And i said. I don't i said i've watched laws. Roll out again and again where they make a particular feature illegal and the gun manufacturers seems to take them about eight months while they scratched their heads collectively and go. Oh so we'll do this instead and just to to hear to be frustrated about it. Go well if you're going to make a law. Let's make sure it's one that actually has a serious impact on what we're seeing instead of dabbling around the edges. So he said okay. Potshot you think you know so much and then drag me to brady foundation which i thought was going to be a one off But here i am we gotcha.

Master Chief in Fortnite

"Master chief coming four. It certainly seems so yesterday The item shop started to leak four. I often that while we were live yesterday. Cradles credos teaser. Images came in hot and heavy showing the greatest coming to fort seems to be one hundred percent true. I then made the prediction. That a game awards they would come out and the four hundred announcement would be house. Chief in sama's all being announced for fortnight This morning actually. Late last night New starting to break again. We are on hype x. Right now we'll be getting a halo co lab to if it's not scrapped. The skin is going to be master. Chief kevin if you click on it you click on capitol get a little bit bigger. I you can see. We have of course master chief there as the character. His glider is the pelican. Does that get you excited. They're all yet. It is a little hog there for when you must there. And then yeah. He's got his What gravity gravity hammer hammer. Sorry it's very pixelated pickaxe. Kevin if you want to go to the next one. This is four might have started it. What's the deal with the little word hug. Like when would. I think that's an email this little dance. You see how it's got little dance. I kind of I love it. Yeah that's really kooks that fortnite battle royale leaks. Twitter are the people who put this. Initially i think this is what barrett show shared last night in our for channel They say here's some images that halo cosmetics. These are confirmed to be real so again. Take it with a grain of salt as hypoc says it's not scrapped. This is what this looks like. One hundred percent believe it. I think this is all going to be a game. Awards announcement tim. Where's your head at the game stuff is the one thing i'm not totally locked in on. They haven't actually fully announced this to me that because that was about to say like why would they hold off one when they'd been announcing him so anybody that has been officially adopt. Or is that still. Okay okay. gotcha then. Yeah that that does make a lot of sense what's interesting about. This is stick into the salmon's theory because the in multiple ways sammy's is one of these things. It's not like the other when you have chief crato and sama's like if it was chief and sam is that kind of makes sense but it puts kind of a different level where like it should be. Mario you know as like the face of the company type conversation hold that it goes back to you i. i'm out. I'm totally outside of this ship. You guys are like all about this fortnight that's a fortnight household include. Joey she's freaking out and we're hanging out. She's trying to explain to me. She's like oh shit like man. Lloyd theory is it's bounty hunters and my first reaction was sarah. So it's i think there's multiple things leading to to sammy's even if it's not just the big three. The bigger question is doesn't intend to play nice because intendo go nintendo. That is the big question. And i think that that is. What's so fascinating to see. Is that yeah. It's a bounty hunter. Sees and talk about these hunters. They're doing all these different things. I think you can make a case for obviously not bounty hunter but in a different way cradles being hunter. Obviously she's being hunter and then for salmon. A bounty hunter is nintendo down to share this stuff in a crossover co lab. Are they down to have her running around with an ar shooting other people like roof. Yeah i don't know. I think honestly i. That's the one on the weakest on that. I think that they're standing in the way then. Is it just going to be crato in master chief coming together to or coming at each other to fight in the trailer or whatever for the announcement because what i'd like to throw in here. I mentioned this yesterday. That during a jesmyn doing zoom calls for the game awards right. He's been bringing on guests he brought on donald mustard of course the big for fortnight that you see every year of the game wards talking about it in donald's it something to this is gonna be a huge deal at the game awards for fortnight What i did hear a quick google. I'm looking at. I fire monkey. Who put all this together on their twitter and says in a recent zoom call with jeff key lean donald mustard. A few hints have been revealed about the future fortnight. This info comes from a source. Who would like to remain anonymous harvard. Credible rationing who's on the call. There will be an announcement at the game wars for fortnight The game wars will take place in two separate tenth. A new recording session with troy baker took place. That's already happened. 'cause we know that stuff right This season is the biggest event they've ever done and it will change the future of fortnight when asked about getting more when asked about getting items smash brothers universe donald muster simply stated. He can't comment about it. One of the things. I brought up yesterday. A loose manner was this. The quote of this is the biggest event they've ever done and it will change feature a fortnight. I think when you hear that coming off the back of the marvel season somebody who. I love playing the marble season at the end. We all were super into me. Barrick have a blessed joey. Roger who kevin keeps dragging into these things even though he i don't like him being on our stuff all right. I'll say it. He's a part time editor. He doesn't deserve to be around as much as i mean. He's killing bats. The one reason. I'll let it keep happening right. Keeps me alive. Say this on a need.

Man of the People

"And the story. You're about to hear it takes place in nineteen seventeen but almost everything that happens in. It feels like it could have happened this week. Basically it starts with this young doctor john. Brinkley he's just married the love of his life many and they decided to go find a place where they can just settle down. He's going to be a town doctor and then they set out for kansas because they see an advertisement that says milford kansas population. Three thousand when you doctor. And they're like okay. We'll go west. So they travel west get milford and three thousand was a typo in fact it was population. Three hundred which say it's like the middle of nowhere. There's nobody there. This is penny lane. She's a filmmaker. She made a documentary about john brinkley. Brinkley moved to milford and they set up shop. This elderly farmer named bills. It's worth comes into the office and you know after much hemming hiring kind of manages to spit out his problem. Which is that. He's a flat tire Get it get it you know and finally the brinkley's like oh. You're impotent okay. Gotcha i'm so sorry. We have nothing for that. Like modern medical science has not solved. That problem. I'm very sorry according to brinkley. What happens next is that he and the former get into small talk and they start talking about goats talking about. How goats never seem to be impotent. They're always zero. And the farmer says something to brinkley. That will change his life. he says. Gosh it's too bad. I don't have billy goat nuts and then brinkley laughs. And then after hours of brinkley's saying no i didn't learn that in medical school. That's not how we do. Things that might now work could be dangerous. The farmer infuses to leave until brinkley agrees to try to fix impotence by giving him go testicles. There's the strangest eureka moment so then of course he tries it and it works. It works according to brinkley. Brinkley tells the world that he has created the goat gland cure. Meaning he will take goat testicles. Insert them into your scrotum and you'll be healed and not just of impotence either. He says it'll cure flatulence emphysema stomach cancer. He's got a version for women which he says will cure female infertility. I talked to this redder. Pope brock who wrote a book about brinkley charlton. He said that when patients came to bring you get the surgery it was set up so that the patients would know that they were getting exactly what they paid for right so the patient was it was local anesthetic so that he could be assured that was actually getting the goat and then Many brinkley usually brinkley's wife would do the snipping on the goat. They would bring the goat balls over opened a guy up toss them in so him up and send him out so just to be clear. This surgery is bogus utterly bogus and privately. Brinkley knows this but he's extremely good. Commencing the public that he believes in what he's selling that goat gland surgery really works. It helps that he looks extremely professional. He's got a three piece suit. He's got round glasses. This neat blonde goatee. He's everybody's idea of what a smart doctor looks like. And so they start showing up at the clinic. The Long Legacy Of The Arecibo Telescope

"So let's step back for a minute edit and get a better sense of how the telescope has been used over the years. Tell me about what it does. What kind of projects it's worked on. So one of the really neat things about the The observatory that's very versatile. Scientific instrument most telescopes radio. Telescopes don't have the ability to send out light. They only capture late at the observatory. We can send and capture late when an asteroid coming by. We're pretty much a flashlight that we turn on we send out to. It comes back right. We can tell you how far these objects are down to a meters unbelievable add narrate and we care about where these asteroids are going to be because what if one day this thing comes around and gets too close to earth if we can let people know this is going to happen next year we can actually prepare for it like dinosaurs. They didn't have a space program so they can get to prepare for anything. That's true we do have that on the dinosaurs. We don't have much. But we have out of cbo and we have the direct understanding of asteroids because i also think just from an outsider's perspective like this telescope does really play a role in our cultural imagination. It contributes to our sense of off. You know about the universe. Like i think i remember in the seventies it was used to deliberately beam a message into space. You know like hey. We're here like i mean it really has like not only these scientific contributions but these cultural contributions it's like an it's an inspirational place. You know oh yeah. I love marvel. I'm love marvel comics. And things like that and i was watching. Although i'm a little old doesn't matter. I was watching a cartoon about the avengers and the avengers were flying off to the odyssey observatory to save it. Who was that still in the cartoon. Oh my gosh so yes it really is you know. It's not like one of those fields of science or scientific tools that really stays in academia right. It provides a broader context for understanding. The universe for non-academic says well which i think is is really special and important. It's like bench because of its versatility. It gets to be part of not only applied science but just part of typical day to day life. You may not see it. But it's there in cultural context. It's there you know saving your life making sure this asteroid is not coming towards you. It's really cool so it sounds like at this. Recent damage has big implications in terms of slowing down a lot of research. What kind of research are we going to be missing out on right now with it down well for personal perspective. I actually had some observing runs. We're gonna come up in late. September through october where we were going to be studying mars with radar this year mars was going to be the closest it was going to be and also observable from the osce observatory until the year twenty sixty seven so it. This year was literally a once in a lifetime. Opportunity to observe mars with other. See all twenty twenty twenty twenty worst year ever. Yeah okay so the damage that happened. This year isn't the first hurdle for the observatory right hurricane. Maria damaged the observatory twenty. Seventeen you you were working there right like. Tell me about that experience. Su twenty seven one hurricane. Maria came by not only was. I was still working at. The observatory actually stayed at the observatory. That's where i went for shelter so i got to see the winds combined and the damage For me one of the things that like hit me the most or make me realize the damage the most after the hurricane when we went outside. And when you look across the telescope and it's in the middle of a beautiful rain-forest greenery everywhere and that day after the hurricane when we went outside there's there is no green left it just nothing just brown. Everything was brown. The trees were dead. You see all the way down to the soil. It was impactful in the sense of. Wow this is the damage of the hurricane. Awesome packed full as a puerto rican. Who's used to seeing their island. Be beautiful and green selling costs high. Like that's gone all gone in day. That's tough that you know it starts being Quite a bit less about the science at that point. Oh very quickly. I mean after the hurricane when there was no utilities at all on the island we still had a couple of generators so people from of see what would drive up. We pump water for them and they leave with a bunch of water the to drink water. Well so okay. Let's let's let's talk a little bit about the funding struggles right because there have been ongoing funding struggles for the telescope. Break that down a little bit for me yes. The telescope which is owned by the national science foundation has had some funding struggles in that the budget that is used to operate. It has been going down. And it's gone down from anywhere from about fourteen mil per year with the expected current contract. They could go all the way down to two million gotcha into and so what will that mean for for the telescope and the people that work on it. So as there is diminishing funds going there They'll be less available time for people to go explore go observe pulsars and find the first evidence for gravitational waves which won the telescope a nobel prize in physics and nineteen seventy-three. It's

Persuasive Fish

"Once upon a time a boy named lucas fishing in around pond near his house he pulled his little canoe behind him rattling with his fishing pole and tackle box. The air had the first hints of chili fall but the sun still shown warm and bright glinting on the pond in the air leaves in sunset reds and oranges came spinning down to rest upon the murky water. The trees leaned half bear and shook in the breeze. Lucas was warm in his jeans and hoodie though and he pushed his little canoe off the shore. He hopped in and wobbled awkwardly. He found his balance sending out little ripples. In every direction the little boat glided into the water and he sat on the woven seat humming simple tune to himself and pulling out his rod and tackle. What's going to work today. He said to himself looking over his different lers. He had jitterbug and smelly kelly's spinners and spoons but for the little pond. His favourite had to be the plastic grub in pearly purple with practice hands. He attached the grub and a singer and then paddle gently into the middle of the pond. Here we go. He said to himself and he let his line fly. It was out over the water and then plopped in sinking into the murky depths. Lucas reeled in slowly enjoying the day and then cast it out again. It didn't bother him that he didn't catch anything for the first hour so he had been fishing enough to know that it was a sport of patience as much as anything else plus whatever he caught would be as dinner so he had all the motivation he needed. Lucas was laid back in the canoe whistling asong. When the line suddenly stretch tight this sean. He said with a wide grin. He grabbed the rod and pulled and started reeling. He could tell right away that it wasn't a very large fish but it had plenty of energy. It zipped back and forth under the water swimming the line this way. And that until lucas. Pulled it into the canoe shining and splashing. Gotcha he said. It was a little fish and would be barely worth eating still. It was something. Lucas bent down to scoop it into his cooler when the fish called out to him. Hey it said oh. Wait a minute. Lucas blinked down at. the fish. Did did you just talk to me. Yeah said the fish and you talk to me. What's the big deal Fair enough i guess. Lucas said bowing to the little fishes logic. So you really shouldn't eat me. The fish said it would just be a really bad idea.

Okay we're gonna start out with an easy question. Skim your resume for us. Ooh okay. i worked in a candy store in high school in my town in in westchester my parents. Instill that of work ethic in both me and my siblings from a very young age but pressing fast forward too many details that far back i graduated from college went to law school where i met my husband and during law school. I was a legal intern for the new york. Mets my summer internship know the legal internship. When you're in law squad to your second year of law schools are a pretty big deal and it usually ends up. Hopefully if all goes well was an offer at the end of the summer and so my my summer internship after my second year of law school was with gotcha which was the pre eminent. Bankruptcy firm is started with them a second year of law school that was in two thousand seven and then got my offer. September two thousand eight. The world imploded. They actually asked. If i would start early. I started with them. I think it was like october. Two thousand eight. I joined the restructuring group and my first experiences. A lawyer was filing a general motors in american airlines bankruptcy and lehman brothers so spent about two years there and then my husband and i got married in about two thousand ten and he was general counsel for a brazilian private equity fund. That had just acquired burger king. They asked him and one of the other associates from the firm to go down to miami and run the restructuring. that's for burger. King is space and was founded. I left while you know shortly after we got married. Florida has what they call authorized house. Counsel's you actually don't have to take the bar if you work in house as an attorney. So it's really focused on finding an inhouse role and at the time removed. The miami marlins baseball team could had experience in baseball from law. School was opening a new ballpark so previous to that they had actually the facility from the miami dolphins the football team and they didn't have their own ballpark so they were building their own miami. I was brought on as associate in-house counsel director of non baseball revenues. So for the first time in franchise history. They were going to be trying to drive revenue that wasn't affiliated with baseball revenue. So it's sort of you know my first foray into running a peon. Al like an entrepreneurial or business unit within a large the larger confines of a much more resource organization and so i was there for four and a half years. I got pregnant with my first son a now three and we bought our first house in miami beach and my neighbor i was still working for the marlins in house. I was about probably six months pregnant at the time. My neighbor who was like the mayor of our blocks is lovely swedish woman. She invited us over for dinner and had been time about this business that she had started in her garage really and it was still in her garage. Had a few boxes of this swedish nasal spray that she sold to pediatrician's offices and baby boutiques and her kids were now teenagers and she wanted to know anyone. Miami interested in taking over the business. And i said you know about my okay my era i wasn't a parent yet. It didn't even it almost like went right over my head. Yeah i couldn't imagine what. The product was an eric as she wants you to buy the inventory for her. Then eventually you take over an hour running freda yes fast forward. What something that people can't find out about you from google earth lincoln that i really you know up until that moment i really was not a risk taker at all. I told the line. I did what was laid out for me and i i would never in a million years have predicted that i would have veered off. Course
