Film Academy Announces New Diversity Requirements For Best Picture Nominees
"Academy has long relied on the film industry to make diversity central to its process and has long been embarrassed at the results. Hashtags Oscar's so White and Oscar's so mayl have greeted recent telecasts. But it's hardly a new problem. Back in 1988 Eddie Murphy took a moment while announcing the best picture nominees to say he almost didn't agree to do it because in 60 years, the Oscars had only three times honored black performers. Hattie McDaniel, Sidney Poitier and Lou Gossett Jr now

"With a classic Fourth of July tail jaws dot dot 0.0.3 And I am here to drink tea. Three. Well, three. They took the G off June for this relief. Here's the thing that I would say, always add more D's, by the way not to bring it up. But I was firm D's got it. Put firm these on the end of the movie. You joke about this, but I was in Parana three. Double D. They knew their audience. You hear the voices of my Tuco's? That is, of course, Jason. Music is and June diary for How are you Both? Hurry, Apollo. I'm very good. This movie I saw. In the theater. Did you? Really? Oh, yeah. Oh, interesting. I remember this movie. I was so psyched about this one because three D o a deal. Remember a movie called Dreamscape. Also in three D very exciting to see these movies and This movie, which Gina's right It is just three D, but they make no. Um, like you're watching a three d movie without watching it in three days. The three D What I presuming is a lot of the three D stuff is like underwater. Slow moving items. You know, it's a lot of stuff, you know that is like, you know. The fissure. It almost seems like a composite like it did in a studio and that they don't even change. The titles like The titles are supposed to shoot out at the screen. They will left in the trails, so it's almost hard to read the Galindez desk. Wade's name comes up. It's got like a lot of like with depth to it, but it's hard to I loved the credit at the beginning of the movie that said that this film is suggested by the novel JOB by Peter Actually suggested fine by the novel. That is a crazy, that's a crazy credit. I mean, that was I mean, when I suggested is very loving, and the other thing about this title sequence that made me laugh was you know, Louis Gossett Jr is in this movie and l G. J Love l D. J Iron Eagles. We've got to do that on the landlord. Great movie. I also is. Which is the one where his principles with John Belushi. Oh, what is that? Jim Belushi. Sorry. Yeah. Hey, I don't remember if I could remember, but yes, but I thought it was interesting. We gotta do Iron Eagle. Oh, it's on the list. Cedric, come on. So good was like one of the only other people named Jason in the world. Jason Gedrick and I remember being like Whoa, cool like that. And Jason Robards and I was like, Oh, that old guy in a lot of Jason's, you know, in your class, No. And with a slew of Jason. Yeah, no, not really. No, I didn't know Jason so much later in life and Jason's Now Jason is now like I feel like an extinct name like Hominy. And do you know any Jason's in your kid's here group? But I grew up never knowing any one with my name. Yeah, I mean, they were like two old women that I met short my name so, but I had several Jason's in my class. I love me here. I'm glad that there are Jace that were Jason's out in the world. I feds. Anything species in my classroom were very much made fun of from Jason for fighting the 13th. It was sort of like is that it was, you know, I also was alone. Name person. There is no Paul's talking about you. Both have very Common? No barely ever heard. It was very special. Juno's very special. I was alone in the world as a Jason. You know, this whole hardly able to pronounce my name. Do you pronounce the L? Is it a strong? L I do remember not to sit down to get off on too much of a tangent. But Paul and I had to pick up a pizza and ojai ones and my group of friends. Over Thanksgiving, But it was like the day after. Nobody wanted to cook, Jason. You weren't invited, I guess, but I must not have been there at this house in Ojai. That apparently a group of you are Yeah. I remember why we were best friends. But some people you're very very dear Tio. Where's your mom and Dad? Were there really building having their fun? They are a blast We had with so many laughs and not talk to them since they told me I was a quote on cold Bummer. So the next night After Thanksgiving. We ordered pizza so you don't have to cook, and that's the way we roll because otherwise you cooked the whole time I put on that apron. So we go to get the pizzas. Paula might go to get them. Everybody else stays back, and people are hungry. People are hungry. People are hungry, and we get to the pizza place and Wei go in there like yeah, we're waiting. We're all says I'm sorry. Checking you because he ordered like five pies. A lot of people were there and yet I didn't get invited. Your You definitely weren't there. Wow. So many people About five pilot like I ordered five guys for Paul. She's like, Ah, I don't have that order. And we're like what? And she's like, I don't I have nothing here for Paul and We're like we just called. What do you mean? Used to come by and 40 minutes? I'm so sorry. I don't have anything here for a pop. I'm like freaking out on Paul. All of our dear friends. Our back there. Everybody's so hungry. Dear friends. "You'll find a way to make it happen on terms that worked for you spend unless time measuring yourself by how it looks for other people. That's really powerful. I think especially raising a little. Oh girl receiving a lot of information about how things shouldn't shouldn't be like can you imagine the power if they didn't believe and I didn't I I'm the only girl on my family and I was the only person that danced. I I have a five other Group of five boys in my family and My I didn't feel like in my family Eh. The we had a difference of the things that we were connected to like I was connected. Dance and travel and Kind kind of more of a bit of a Free Spirit and I spent a lot of time worrying that things weren't going to happen for me like they did for other people. Because I I didn't how looked for them didn't feel right for me. That's that's very wise right that to have that kind of awareness that like. That's not right for me rather than feeling wrong right rather the feeling that it's like I'm wrong because I'm not fitting into mold but like hey that doesn't that doesn't work for for for me and I wrote my own path. Anything that's really. That's really powerful. If you were to be leaving this earth and you wanted to leave behind gold nuggets of Wisdom Administration for those. You're leaving the next generation. Whatever that may be what would that look like? My advice would be to learn early. The difference between healthy and toxic relationships when it comes to friendships love in your career learn to learn it early learn what healthy love is and how that applies to all of your relationships and what unhealthy love is as a man would've booked on relationships and it was definitely publisher came back to me and was like hey everything in the book. Every other chapter is really strong except for your section on relationships and I was like. Yeah that's because I relationship. So he's he was like you're going to have to figure out how you feel about it so I had. I ordered all these books on anger and intimacy and conflict and healthy relationships ships and boundaries. So that I could read it all frame and opinion and I started dating my current partner at the same time as over one night and I was like I just want you to know that that I have all these books about Mary missy. And it's not for you right now and he's like Oh my God you have a roadmap and I'm like I do and he's like can I gave him the chapter because and we've framed our relationship on that on that chat because because it was I will agree with you. Unfortunately it's usually at a very advanced age unless you have a mentor in your life or someone who's kind of got their hands on your shoulder older and guiding you that you realize like maybe I shouldn't put up wisdom of things they do and maybe I'm worth more than I'm accepting. Yes and we say something a lot at the class and Natalie my colleague in the she's also founding teacher of the class. She will often say a what is familiar is not necessarily good for you. That's so powerful. Because we get into these like I remember awesome Italian. One time like complacency is death when we're comfortable and we're complacent and we're we are kind of sitting in familiar relationships in patterns patterns. That doesn't necessarily mean that they're healthy doesn't mean that you're growing and unfortunately one of the things that I have to share with people who are in the self development space is is growth is not comfortable but it is very uncomfortable. And we're so worth it. I mean it in when you really think about it. It's like with anything grows. If you watch plant grow if you watch anything really you change its state. Of course it's going to come with strong sensation. You're going from one thing to the next that is it doesn't. It's not like just like magic wands. You know you're actually like forming something totally new and and turning something jumping over which when you when you think about it that way like of course it's GonNa come with strong feelings? Yeah no feel the feelings move your. I'm not saying like all these. Are the lessons feel your way. "Goes beyond. Just what is happening in your brain. You're thinking and then you're feeling and as we studied the way. The body works and emotions and trauma it gets stored in the body and the physicality whatever it is that you can't processor necessarily make sense of. Where does it go? It gets stored into the body so as we start to move all of the unfilled. All of the unprocessed unprocessed all of the lake. Yeah you know. I haven't really necessary. Thought about these aspects of where I'm feeling small. We begin to be able to move in and then how beautiful. The body has this system of cleansing of tears. How incredible that when you hit on those pockets of truth or pockets of stored emotions are unseen unsaid? This beautiful release of tears or sound or laughter or Deep size can come to help help ourselves peel. I love that. I think it's a beautiful. This huge smile on my face as you're talking for those people who feel separate from their body right they have have the body issues body image concerns. They don't own their body or feel separate. From what advice would did you give the past the history that you have in movement and your own experience. What advice would you give those folks? Yeah get get to know your body you know like you said. I think that we can just kind of it. Becomes this thing we carry around. We have a love hate relationship that we know we love it but we know we need it but we don't necessarily love it So getting to know your body like you would get to know your friend or your partner or your boyfriend or like talking to it everything that you can do to actually use it and be present when you're using it so that could be everything from doing exfoliating foliage body scrubs being in the bath taking care to put really really Delicious Body oil on after the shower. They pay attention to the physicality having your own sensation of your hands on your body an end knowing what your own body is is going to take some of that gray array On kind of like knock concrete relationship that you have a and make it a little more solidified and then that goes with moving to so if we're disconnected from her body's chances are most of the time we're in our head in them. Were faking when we're moving. We begin to enter the space of more feeling unless was thinking so for some of the people that I work with It'll it'll just be putting your body in motion and whatever physicality that you resonate with whether it's lifting weights whether it's dancing whether it's yoga like what makes your body happy start to go down that path but if you really think about is like if you're GonNa if if you want to deepen your relationship with anything you have to spend time using it. You have to spend time in conversation with it. So you're you're entering a dialogue of getting to know your own body. I love that I feel so I feel that very deeply because as I get older parts of my body that are a little bit more. It's not interested in changing and I've gotten into this place where it's kind of Grounding into it and owning it and loving it and feel the way it moves and the way I hug the child and the way I did and the way I put on lucious smelling lotions and bathe and do everything with intention and those moments try to create sensory experiences so that I can have a relationship with my body rather than it just beaten. I think you said it very well like this thing that comes along with you. It's kind of consider it just this thing that we're kind of stuck with a lot of times as opposed to having a deep relationship with it where we're like like I have to take care of this temple and anything to is that true movement. It's not just a spiritual or emotional release. There's also the science of of removing toxins from your body working on your person. Pathetic nervous system. There's so many science based studies. He's and proof that moving your body of course cardiovascular system and all of these things but we have a tendency sometimes separate ourselves from that. I'm curious is for you and this is your lifestyle. What is your daily liked? You have a practice. Do you wake up in the morning and do certain things. What does that look like? Yeah Ah Yeah on my day. It shifts from day to day depending on how much I'm teaching and in my role I'm also The MVP experience at the class and a lot of what my role is is directing the teacher training and Development Program for a teacher so that looks like taking other teachers classes observing serving our own teachers other teachers outside of the class as we scout for four teachers so and then when I'm not teaching class or doing anything anything like the sort than I'm in our headquarters in our office in Tribeca so my day can be in various different places says that requires lots of different outfit changes Gary Back with you on my gosh. My Mom's still to this day calls me the bag lady. She's like when under you no longer going to beat the bag lady. Just carry multiple bags everywhere. You go so eight what. What is what I found owned that helps me especially in New York City? It's chaotic they're carrying all the bags. And I I do my my. Hi Dave get set up the best when the mornings are just for myself so if that means I have to wake up two hours before I have anything the thing that I need to show up for and have that time just for myself then. That's how I feel my best for the rest of the day and in in that time because I'm moving my body so much throughout the day I I'm not starting with a movement practice unless potentially it's a day that I'm not moving out a couple of days where or I'm not moving but I'm moving my body so much that in the morning. What feels good to me is having quiet drinking my hot water and lemon and apple CIDER? Vinegar being very clear whereas I plan out my day how. I'm going to spend my time. What my priorities are making sure I leave my house with with a substantial amount of healthy food to sustain sustain my energy and being really well prepared I feel that my myself cure for That feels right for me. Is Making sure that I'm prepared for in my day when I'm not prepared feel like taking good care of myself. That's when I'm like oh I didn't I didn't bring bring lunch or bring a snack so now I'm in that place where I'm Hungary crashing. I don't want to eat or didn't bring the right change of clothes or figure out what my priorities were in. My energy doesn't feel as potent. It feels kind of dissipated so the mornings mornings and the evenings are the buffers of time that I dedicate so lead for myself and self care. I think that's such a huge message to create almost like the priorities and the planning for the day. I'm I'm building out a big project right now. I have an APP. It's coming this launching. Chris Cool Yeah. Thank you And I have to tell you. It's around wellness and self care. That's assume one area where I have struggled and it's really it's really funny like even if you're in the life and the lifestyle. Oh Yeah you have to get to this place where you're like okay okay. What are my priorities today? How do I make today flow? Because it's the days where I'm just running out of the House taking my daughter to school and like with my calendar her that I eat poorly. I missed I missed the gym. I don't meditate and then that adds up so I love that message that creating being like almost like. What are my priorities today? What do I need to take with me so that I have the tools that I need to have the most successful day? I think that's beautiful fall today. "For this person they just want to gossett god was will know well listen at least they're in church in may be they'll get that message one sunday that led towards dementia rice speaking a which i was in church sunday and at the top of the sermon my pastor uh went into a special prayer for donald trump and this was the first time i have seen this happen and i was very encouraged by he says you know we need to just when you'd say a special prayer for our president this time pray that he makes the right decisions i think this is a solid move by any pastor across this country no matter who the president is even back when obama was president i think it's always important to pray for the president pray that make the right decisions riot um for this contrary in for the people uh he went in to pray for donald trump and pray for him to be protected from the attacks that are constantly headed his way in particular on this jerusalem issue and how he's been portrayed in the media because we we said hey jerusalem's capital of israel and uh we're gonna move an embassy there that's a big thing for christians because if you're christian you believe that jerusalem is the capital of israel that's that's the land of land that's that's where it's at jerusalem and it will always be that no matter what governments say or whatever else it was a big deal for him to do that and he's taking heat for obvious reasons if you look at it on a biblical side they're you know it's obvious he's going to take heed for that now what i love about the trump administration that is one of the many things that i absolutely love i also love this idea of putting nikki haley as the ambassador the un because she of absolutely pulling her way i didn't know how felt abandoned at first.

"If we if if trans people were able to tell their own stories they weren't all have to be so sad there is no need to always sort of walloe in the sadness and that sort of what ran a gossett was trying to do it seems from her pitch and from the the short sort of clip that uh we is featured on on the on the article it seems like she instead of doing the straight for a documentary decided to eventually turn it into more of like a celebration of her life and a sort of experimental uh a celebration of her life and eat it mean the it's i i i hate to always like make comparisons but i do feel like this the way in which you talked about um what this could have been uh or what um a having a transportation tell these stories could look like it it reminded me of we had a conversation about the movie detroit a earlier this year and how that movie which is directed by kathryn bigelow tells a story of real events that happened um to a group of young black men in 60s that movie also in many ways sort of unintentionally it it focuses in on the violence and the sadness and death in a wave that feels less active and i love if you could talk a little bit more about what you were talking about in your piece in how that relates to what uh reyna is trying to do yeah i mean i certainly can't speak for rain raina but um i think the trans community is steeped in a lot of this violence and hopelessness and said and we really i think argue earning or more positive betrayals and things that will lift us up at things that will give us strength um and so i do as a as a transfers that i often try to.
