"Go crazy over it. Put some bacon on there. It will. I like it already. I was in Ontario this past week and the peel region with peel regional police there and we got to talking about the French Canadian side and even they said, man, it's a different world over there. It's amazing when I'm talking to the guys at RCMP. Their business cards have French on one side, English, on the other, forms, you have to declare, I think, which language you prefer as your primary. So things have to be done around that. Except anyway, I just thought it was interesting. It's like, it's like going into the south and getting into Alabama and Georgia and South Carolina is like, it's almost like having, you gotta have South Carolina on one side, you know, the way they speak and then oh yeah. Oh, she's a little hard. You know what that means? Bless your heart. That's basically fuck you for everybody else. Yeah. So anyway, but get back, I mean, you decided you want to do basically MP. So where did you start off life in the military then? Where'd you go through training? I did my military police training at fort Gordon, Georgia. And when I had enlisted because I wanted to go to Vietnam because of my language, French language, they said, well, we need interpreters in Vietnam right now because of the montagnard French speaking section. So I thought I was going to Vietnam. So on graduation day from military police school, my orders were given to me, and I look, and I told my sergeant, I said, something's wrong here. I'm supposed to be going to Vietnam. And this says Albuquerque, New Mexico. Hell of a difference. So he goes French go over to the personnel office and tell him that there's America's. That's what I signed up for. So long story is shown on that one is basically a personnel said Pete, you have to go to Albuquerque. They designated you to go to the sandia base in Albuquerque, New Mexico. And that's where you're being assigned your now in dasa Department of Defense special agency unit, and I said, what's there? And he says, we can't change the orders, he says, you're locked in. And basically this was the base where sandia national labs. The nuclear bomb was originally made and all that. And they have the nuclear bomb storage in the mountains there. So I did my military police there. And on any of these and I was promoted after being there for a year, I was promoted to a spec four position, almost like a sergeant. And for road patrol and I started making cases besides all kinds of crazy cases and one of them it's a funny story is I was on patrol and the main gate to the base, the MP on duty. You had to stop and if you had a sticker then you were waved through and here comes this car and he runs the main gate and then heads up the officers club road and so the guy calling the radio is I got a guy that just ran the gate and all that and I was coming down. And as a result, I pulled him over and I was training a new guy. He was from New York. And this guy was a professional boxer. Get your partner or the guy you pulled over. No, he was my partner. He was in training. So he was writing with me. So we pulled it over and the guy was in a convertible. His girlfriend, I'll never forget blond good-looking lady. And so I pulled him over and we both got out of the car and I walked over and I said, sir, you ran the gate there. What's going on? Can I see some identification? And the girl says, go ahead, honey, show them show them who you are. And he looked at me and he gets out of the car. And he said, you salute me. I am. A colonel. And you will salute me when you address me. And I said, you don't have a sticker showing that, you know, you're an officer on your car. And you ran the gate and I don't know, I want to see some IDs. He says, you stand at attention and salute me. I said, pow, you're going to be under arrest if you don't show me an ID. And all of a sudden, he started to swing by and clinch this fist and just as he started to hit me, my trainee, boxer, cold cocked him right there on the spot, dropped him to the ground. He was up. That's where the famous army line comes in from the MP. Sir, never confuse your rank with my authority. Exactly. Well, anyhow, what happened is. I got on the radio and called my lieutenant and I says, you better come down to oak club but road because we just co cocked a guy claiming that he's a colonel and he refused and he was going to strike me. Does he did he look military did he look? He looked military at all, you know, and so long story short is that lieutenant showed up and he finally came to and we got an idea and he finally came to how long did it take for this lieutenant to show up like ten minutes? He was down on the ground and knocked out for about 6 minutes. And so when he came to and we got the ID and all that, you know, he said, I'm a

"And I was on a cruise ship and I met an individual named Jeffrey Nance and we talked a little bit about a story of meeting and what led to this interview, but I found out that Jeffrey was an army judge, at least a retired army judge, and he's also a currently serving bishop or a judge in Israel, and I thought man, this would be so fascinating to sit down with Jeffree and just talk about the principles of being a judge. How to make tough calls with the impact somebody's life and people who've committed wrongs and what do we consider, what is mercy the concept of mercy? Where does that play into all of this? And we had a phenomenal discussion. We spent the first about 20, 30 minutes just talking about Jeffrey's career, becoming a judge in the army, what that looked like, what his day to today life involved and then we transitioned that into being a judge, a judge in Israel, a bishop, and where those principles manifested there. He was actually the judge on a very high profile case with Bo Bergdahl, many of you who follow politics and things may recognize that name. But he was the judge that decided the Bo Bergdahl case and a man talking about a fascinating journey and a bit tricky at times that he went through just a phenomenal story. Here we go, let's jump into this learning more about how to be a judge. Not just a judge though, a judge in Israel, making tough calls. Here we go. My interview with Jeffrey Nance. Today I'm headed to Charleston, South Carolina with Jeffrey Nance. How are you, Jeffrey? I'm great. How are you? Good. Now, do you go by Jeff, Jeffrey, or just either one? Either one. Either for either the three. It's fine, nice. Now, we had the pleasure of meeting recently in January of 2023. We are on a cruise together. One of the latter day travel cruises that I have the opportunity to speak on from time to time and you happen to be on the cruise and we connected. So that was great. Yeah, it was a fun time to a group of Latter day Saints there on the high seas and it was an experience for sure. How did you end up on that cruise? Well, we were at the temple back last summer, and we ran into some folks that we had known when we were stationed at fort Gordon, Georgia. They were there at the temple, so we made this reunion we hadn't seen them in years. And they said, hey, we're going on a cruise in January. You guys should go with us and they told us all about it. And we said, yeah, that sounds pretty good. So we looked into it and yeah, that's how we ended up there. And then we told some other people about it, and they came. So we had a small little South Carolina slash Georgia contingent there. Yeah, it was great. It was great. And as I was on the ship and I'm talking to different people eating with different people and a few of them, few in your group said, hey, listen, you've really got to talk with this as Jeffrey Nance guy. He's a bishop and he's had quite a career path and I think he'd be a phenomenal interview. And so after a little bit of arm twisting, we got you to agree in the interview. This isn't your typical thing, right? Right.

"In lodging and transportation costs on Mary Walter in Washington, D C. Now the Fisher House story, in their own words continue. My wife came to visit and I picked her up at the airport. And she said, there's something definitely wrong with you. We gotta go to the emergency room. Next. We need to military doctors Colonel Rob Holmes and Colonel Cindy Holmes from the Army Dental Court. Oh, yeah, they're married and she remains active duty. He's retired and in treatment. We caught up with them at Bethesda Fisher House number five. Now, in their own words, Here's their Fisher House story. Hi. My name is Rob Holmes from Chicago, Illinois and joined the military to help pay for school. I joined the reserves and I was in the reserves for National Guard, actually, for four years while I was in dental school. And after I graduated dental school on active duty and served 30 years active duty as a dentist in the dental corps, and then retired past August and Health issues kind of came up and ended up here. Well, I was up in Alaska building a cabin for a retirement home and my wife came to visit and I picked her up at the airport. And she said, there's something definitely wrong with you. We gotta go to the emergency room. So we went to the emergency room, and the reason for that was because I was acting strangely and I started kind of stumbling and losing my balance my equilibrium and they did a CT of my head and found a big tumor about the size of her fist was six centimeters by seven centimeters. My name is Cindy Holmes and I'm robs Homes wife. We currently live in Augusta, Georgia, actually, just a little bit outside Dagestan. Apple in Georgia, right outside of Fort Gordon. I'm still active duty and we were separated for about three weeks because I'm still working, and he's retired. And actually, you know, we talked to him every day and I could tell over the phone that there was something wrong with him and actually looking back at the past six months had noticed that his personal it's personality was changing. And but it was very Suttles. I wasn't too sure what it Woz and I knew that he should consult with a doctor thinking Maybe it's just, you know, having a hard time. Adjusting to retirement. But anyway, all this to say that the last two weeks before he was diagnosed with the two are they just mentioned I could tell on the phone when I was talking to him while I was in Augusta, Georgia, Anne was in Alaska. That he his cognition was didn't seem quite right. He seemed very like, um, detached, like not part of the conversation. I had some friends. I have some friends in Alaska that were telling me that rub was not acting himself. They were really worried about him. And one point. Actually, I didn't even talk to him for 40 something hours because he didn't even realize that we had not been talking and he was not thinking of charge. In your cell phone, and we're there in Alaska in the middle of nowhere. They're hard to reach him. So anyway, all this to say that I was really looking forward to going back to see him. And actually, on the 16th of June, I was flying from Georgia to Alaska on a night flight. And when I landed in Anchorage, Alaska, and 17th, I saw my husband like having a hard time walking like he's he's drunk. You know, he's walking, very crooked. He's slurring his speech. I can see is processing information very slowly and that was like While this is this is very bad. You know, I could tell there was something allow. You know, It was a lot more obvious than just over the phone and I told him I said Rob, we have to go to the ER because there's something very wrong. He didn't want to go because he didn't recognize how serious that wa so I forced him and said, I'm going to do the talking. You don't have toe The talks that we went to the ER to make a long story short stew late to make a try to think what you did took us again and of his brain. And suddenly he had a big tumor way. Decided to come here at Walter Reed actually worked here back in 2013 for a year, and I knew the team here of providers is just incredible. So we came here to the ER and the admitted him as an in patient. And they actually found out also through a, uh, another skin that he that brain tumor is coming actually, from a long cancer and my husband Rob is never smoked, actually. So we were shocked and when you have a big tumor like that in the head six by seven centimeters. Rob was very scared that they were going to do the surgery. Two days we got here at Walter Reed. Actually, on 19. June I had taken a night flight, and we had already been in the hospital for two days up in the last guy, And by the time we were here, we had not slept for a long time and flying from Alaska was long, very exhausted. And these so we stay in the hospital. They scheduled his brain surgery for just two days after we got here. And Rob was terrified that you know, with a big tumor like that he would wake up with Not all this cognition is his personality. Personality would a change even more acutely than I had changed already, So we really wanted this family and actually my family to come and see him. He wanted to see them before the surgery because he was afraid he wouldn't be the same person. That day we asked. We had the social worker and impatient social worker who said that she could set us up and This Fisher house and at that point in time with the boys, not for my husband and I was for the family because they wanted to come and see him because myself and Rob we were staying in the hospital. So Fisher houses again. Just not for you know the patient and this house, but also for The family who's coming to, you know, get support. So it meant a lot to me to have that because by the time I actually saw a bed in the Fisher House had not slept for 50 something hours And even though I was staying in the hospital, I didn't want him to be alone because I know he was terrified, so I would be with him in the hospital and then in the day When his mom and sister were able to be with him in the hospital. I would go to the room at the Fisher house, Take a shower, get changed, and so on, like, kind of regroup. Take a nap for a couple of hours because I was exhausted and then went back to the hospital. So if I didn't have the Fisher House, I would have been able to do that. This is the Fisher House story in their own words. Stories of military service and how 85 Fisher houses in the U. S. And around the world serve our military veterans and their families. If your host Mary Walter, from Washington, D. C first time I walked into the Fisher house. I was amazed. I saw well decorated well cared for just beautiful places that didn't look anything like a hotel. Looks like a house like someone lived there, and they were opening their doors to us. And then after I was there for a couple days, I realized that it's much more than a house that it's It's a social network, and it's kind of like a fraternity. Really, because you've got all these other families. They're all going through different situations, but they're just equally as a distraught and thankful to have the resource is that are available here. That the common area at first seemed like kind of a weird thing that you're sharing dinner space and kitchen space and living space with people you've never met before, And then it becomes a real comfort. You know, we've we've learned their stories. They've learned ours and way always asked about how each other's doing and offer support. It's just been a great experience both logistically and psychologically. Hello. This Cindy Holmes. I'm Rob's forms wife. He's a retired Army colonel. We're from Fort Gordon, Georgia. And you're listening to a new edition of the Fisher House story brought to you by Fisher House dot orc..
