"On. They have a strap. Data can attach to the back of the kick stan. So if you can't get your fingers with the leverage to kick kick kick stan out you could just grabbed a strap instead and that gives you way more lever to pull the kick stand out And i thought this was a really cool addition To their lineup of stuff. Because you know they definitely came up with that really cool controller The adaptive controller. So i don't. I almost forgot to mention that they came out with. This us suffers at advocate to having announced the price for it yet so hopefully they keep it relatively cheap but Yeah there's a really cool thing for any folks that suffer from any disabilities that may need some of this stuff. Go so i know you got to dip. So is she let you go first. Pick up yup picks. Goodness i the only stuff i bought in the last handful. A month's so heads down about stuff. I did pick up new gopro ten as you guys know. My my little stood up here told gopro nines and the reason i bought ten a couple of reasons but one one specifically because i wanted it. Move that reason. The problem the gopro nine for anyone who's used depending time as i don't know who is in charge of the touch screen on the back of the gopro nine but this is a kill me now user experience minutes just so bad and they've been slowly improving it was offered. I think with the software update. I just put on these nine. Say that they've largely fixed many of it but it was these devices. Almost became unusable. If you just kinda be dragging your finger on the screen disastrous they fix that but the fact that you can now buy what is essentially a minute. Yeah you're getting five k. Sixty or you can do four k. A hundred twenty which is insane as well slow mo false level right it can do to to forty actually but the new processor in it it can do amazing things and for camera take anywhere you push into search working. It's great but for me when i use these cameras here on my desk. It's very easy to the all. The stuff goes into the time that we talked about natural recording happened. So i don't have the workflow of getting the stuff off the devices. Which when i was doing it with the kind of personal camera i take the mountains and stuff i thought the wireless connection between phone the device and it was always janke. Didn't always work has slowed. They finally added direct. Where you can plug the the gopro directly into computer your phone and pull the stuff right off which it completely changes the workflow for using this thing on the go so for a lot of little reasons i wanted to just get the new one but it's ranya out this past week so that that's my as dope man the thought about if i got these of webcams men with a look at With a gopro instead. S- amazing what you can do when you figure out a using correctly and i'll tell you why your video looks fantastic asthma. So so my pick is going to be a quick win We've probably talked about it on the show before..

Apps to Make This Valentine's Day Your Best One Yet

"Friend and colleague mark saltzman tier and he has some recommendations to have technology. Help solve this. Valentine's day dilemma. Hey jen thanks for having me back on the show so you have a recent column that is appearing on tech dot usa today dot com about valentine's day. What did you find out you know. I know it's a dated expression that there's an app for that but there are so many apps that can help you prep and celebrate valentine's day for this weekend and that includes when you've got a partner already and you just want to spice up the weekend or if you're in search for one so part of the app ground up which we're not going to get to right now is a look at some dating apps like okay. Cupid and what they found with their members that a lot more open to long distance relationships in virtual dating as you might expect to keep up with the times at least to start which which i think is interesting. I wouldn't want to be single during a pandemic. So i feel for those looking for love at the wrong time but the app said i looked at include of course flour so there's a lot of different apps that you can use. Pro flowers for ios and android is one of the more popular because their prices aren't crazy. We all know you pay through the nose for flowers especially around this time of year including delivery and they throw in like a vase or vase depending on where you're listening to this or a pot if you decide to order a plant they throw that in and there's a lot to choose from and you just put in your zip code and they'll tell you how quickly can get teased. May not be too late if you're listening to this before february fourteenth but a good app to your phone anyways because you can be anywhere and within a couple of tops order something to your significant other and it doesn't have to be just valentine's day so pro flowers was one that i recommended acknowledging that we may not be going to restaurants this valentine's day to clink glasses over a restaurant table. You may be ordering in so at least you don't have to cook with services like uber eats and other food delivery services so suggesting to give that one a spin. Your mate may not love getting you know. Pop is or burger king. c may want to look for nicer option not to slam any potential sponsors of talking tech. But you know if you're going to cork some wine you'll you'll you'll even see where the driver is on their way so you can time everything and of course contactless delivery in twenty twenty. One is good. They've got your credit card information on file so they'll just leave it on the step. Notify you when it's available so those were a couple and then one more is to create a sentimental slide show with photo's as as a nice sort of virtual valentine's day card better than something you could buy at retail i'd argue and there are a lot of different apps that will take your photos and videos and auto magically make a slide show for you including narration if you want to add it or a lot music and i'm referring to one actually in the article called quick without the sea so q. u. i k. it's actually owned by gopro and it's a free download for android and it. Lets you select the photos and videos or you can let it do. Its thing and it will create a sentimental slide. Show for you as set to music. There's one hundred and free songs included or you can add your own music if you like and then send it to your a partner or you can do it privately or posted to social media. So that's that's great. Because it does a lot of the heavy lifting for you and exports it in ten eighty quality with sixty frames per second buttery smoothness so those are a couple of apps that i thought were great for valentine's day.

"Hey here's a new product. Get yours and it's very inviting fantasy This one is one of my favorite. And i feel like overall this email is also a really great example of brand recognition so gopro keeps it simple with really like maybe three to four colors at most with the yellow black blue and the white i feel like they do a good job of being consistent with that and kind of switching it up and emails to where they're still using that color scheme they're just using it in a different order. Yeah i think you're right. One thing though that i think is interesting is i get a different color scheme here. A different color scheme here. I really wanna see something a little bit more consistent. I love the aesthetic of this. And i would love and another one. Here is This font i'm pretty sure is not being used here. Yep so it's just an interesting difference. We could have grabbed these pro at different times and so these might be changes that they've made but this is really nice. It's great to see live taxed love to see a little bit more consistency between these. But i know that can be difficult to do for a big brand so this is even a little bit different still again. Another switch the brand aesthetic. I like this aesthetic. Allot and i actually think this one and this one have a little bit more consistency between the two. Probably because of the fought but man. I think what they're doing years interesting using live texas great. I like these highlighted words. But look at this. It's a new c. T. as well. I wonder maybe these are submissions from over a period of time. It's hard to say. What do you think about this layout really cool out to kind of draws your eye from right to left kind of doing that zigzag effect and i liked it highlights the different accessories too so the other emails are more focused on the camera. And now here again. here's some items. I can compliment that camera or something that you can add to your kit when you're on the go so i think they do a really great job with that and the cta's definitely jumped out to me. What do you think about the copy. Inside the cpa. So they all say get it. Do you feel like that's effective or do you feel like it might do a little bit better. If it had a different word inside each button a couple of the things that i would probably change would be get it all in one shot. You get these kits here. They are and then then. I would let the travel kit and i would make this one of those secondary. Cta's same here same here and as far as the language. I think you're right like get your travel on. Start your adventure. Go big with sports and then where. It says shop all accessories. I would show like a some kind of image with all the accessories or a bunch of accessories and then shop all your accessories but right. Now let's specially these to being so close. I find that it's a little bit overwhelming and it doesn't work quite as well. You know mobile. It works a little better. Because you've got this image sitting in between those. It's one of those balances but overall. I think there's some really strong things happening here. And of course the photography's fun and great. Well thanks for walking through these miskelly appreciate it. What are you going to be doing this weekend. Well this weekend. I'll probably just be hanging out on the couch. I will be watching taylor. Swift's folklore films excited about that. That'll be the highlight. How 'bout you. Well i'm going to be Trying to spend some time with the kids just trying to get some of that outdoor weather where it's safe from covid. But i can still not be cooped up inside so looking forward to email gigs. Thanks for everything always. Please let us know what brands you'd like us to feature and to look at. Don't forget you can submit your own emails on really getting meals dot com and please subscribe to our channel and let others know about it. We wanna keep improving so let us know what you think. Thanks thanks thanks have a good one bye thanks again to for sponsoring this episode book your demo with the link in the video description..

"No era growing through face neurologist. Growing through today literally today and i have you ever seen those videos of like the guys who do the diving or whatever diving because i follow a few different divers on the internet or river. The river stuff orbit the urban diving guys know or just like the river. Cleanup guys the guys who just go into the magnet guys or yeah like stuff like that. This was a video of these guys. Like pulling livestreaming pull pulling a car out as they were leaning there were cleaning stuff out and there was a body in the car. They didn't know it. God i follow. So there's this one guy father who like he just walks around in a wet suit. Which i think is hilarious with like chesty and a gopro head mount and a book bag and he brings his friends and they always have like nice. Dsl ours too. I'm like why do you need three angles for this. But go off. And he goes he goes with a big magnet and a flashlight and goes in like streams and ponds and like sometimes he finds really cool stuff where it's like a waterfall actually deep and he just goes and looks for things he normally comes back with like cell phones and cameras and watches and shit and like sometimes it's valuable but i fallen down the the rather hole of watching him whether he's not that entertaining but like it's all click bait but like what he finds kind of entertaining to me but also the risk of like he might find something really juicy through that up on one where dude found like in one hall it was just like all knives and guns that was like dude like maybe. Stop dredging this pond on x. Clearly if somebody is like handy to get rid of this gun. They're telling people to throw it in this pond. You you digging around and call the police to the shit in while we'll good for civil things. I guess is not good for your livelihood as has protect your neck just production. Yeah this the end of the video him in his driveway with the cops coming to collect his pile of guns knives. Do i can see your house. I know at town. You're in if i needed to be upset about you. Finding my code you have to talk. I have multiple. I keep screen shots on my phone of all the times that you've accidentally showed your address on various social media platforms. I'm okay with that. Letting you know that i'm keeping tabs on my mom picture that will have been posted on. Its own time in the past for anybody listening. Okay so mom. Hey baby okay. I told you. Don't wanna be your step don't want to be can't do that. Joke two weeks in a row. It's been a week in between you're fucking up the time line div dislodge loose. You just let it loose. How to take awesome photos while surfing

"Offer for our listeners. So stay tuned after the show to find out more. So. We've all seen these awesome surfing shots and. To get them so well while they're certainly while I've got the original surfer girl she's. Jan Schreiber. The photographer from the beach who also is an awesome surfer and takes Mason surfing shots. So Jan how do you focus on your surfing? While, you're taking pictures on Yudo pro. Yes. So I when I'm searching, there's two different ways that I use. The GOPRO one is on one sir forward I have a little clip on the front of the board guys have all seen that but then that shot is just of me and I don't really need a million shots at myself. Then I also have on that same clip, it's called Bite Mouth Bite Mount, and you you know it's does what you think does he stick the thing in your mouth and you can hold it and you can paddle. The wage really vague I leave it in my mouth and I use my arms to balance, and if I feel like I have a good command of the wave I pull it out of my mouth and point the camera people or wherever I want. And get an amazing video and then from that video I a lot of times we'll just pull stills out. Does it break your focus when I mean it looks to me I'm a novice watch people. But when you've got that wave, it seems to last for five ten seconds if that. If you're focusing on taking the shot while you're trying to keep your balance isn't that rather hard? Yeah. Sometimes, it doesn't work out so well and I you know I wipe out. sometimes I just point the camera and hope for the best Yeah I I like. It doesn't always work, and then sometimes I'm just paddling and catching people as they come and then the wave crashes on me and I'm you know tumbled a bit but That's all the fun. So that's the bite now. But when you put it in a in amount on the surfboard, does that behind you or in front of you? You can put it behind you, but I have it on the front of my board. So generally catches just me. I could turn it around and catch whatever's in front of the word, but I don't generally do that. Most of the photos that I ended up posting I'm usually holding the camera. So like I said I, use that bite mount all the time I mean that thing is awesome. I look like the total door with it in my mouth is big orange thing but I don't really care and. Why not the chest mount because Gopro has something you can just attached to your chest press record and never touch the thing that's true. you could do that but you're laying down on the board I. think that would be kind of awkward and then you would get wax on the Lens. So to me that would be kind of a problem tell us about some of your favorite shots, the gun. Yeah. A couple of weeks ago at it was sunrise and it was just incredible sunrise. As you know, we've had all these fires in the pollution in the sky makes beautiful sunrises sunsets. And it was. It was just an amazing morning where the water was calm. It was we call it classy conditions where there's no wind in the water looks class moving class. And it was just this. Sky And it was just a gorgeous morning and the one of my other favorite places is my little local beach break here Laguna the ocean is so clear exceeded the bottom as you're writing wave and the other day I did catch the wave. Before it broke while I was writing and you could just see down to the bottom. You can see the finish the rocks is just it's an incredible experience, right? So you can see John's work at at Adventure Muse on instagram. Is Is there an underscore ther- there is it's adventure amused with underscored the end. Did over twitter.

The new should be covering that stuff because it's like, right? That's where I want my kid this team, you know kids be fired up to like learn and like go do something groupie somebody right like seriously do like I am like. Terrified of. What like the majority of like our culture has become TV shows and social media and like all the toy. Driving. Like suction culture they're like or what? You know like there's so much more than just consuming mindlessly. So our hope is just hope nudge that along and the man I wanNA partner with you all day long. Do. Likewise my friends at the at the pleasure always We've gotta do this often. And now, thank you so much for having me on and that's A. Pleasure. Take care of yourself. Thanks. We'll talk to you soon. I'm about. Jerry. Herbie that might have been the longest conversation we've had. It was absolutely and the crazy part is we could've kept going way I remember when Andrea was on the show we said that we could've kept talking for hours and hours, which is true. I think we could've talked to justin for weeks bro Easily I mean it would have been weeks we would have been changing clothes in here out. Of been showering in the back I mean it was gonna be a long conversation because there's just so much depth to get into in his story in the Gopro story in just in in my connection what we learned together on the frontlines Gopro to what he's doing now just so much man. Yeah it was so insightful just to hear, and we finally got the cash a story we've been waiting. What was it? I mean I think the hazing one may be the beginning. Now we didn't even get into all the details of the hazing which will have to save for later episodes maybe are like. Tenth Anniversary episode her be we're GONNA get into it. We'll bring Justin back on bring Justin back on. We'll bring nick back to we'll bring nick we'll. Bring Sean White on we'll. We'll. We'll bring everybody'll party GOPRO reunion yes. Yes. We've had enough proctor and gamble reunions you might as well go with the GOPRO moving on Awesome casual. I mean from the amazing conversation, we have adjusted today. What was your one big thing? Honestly Herbie what I thought about the most when I was talking with Justin was how much and how badly. I screwed up. When I went to that company because like we talked about on the show I was at the height of my career procter-and-gamble had just one marketer of the year froma the tide brand and was getting industry accolades and getting recognition and was getting the opportunity to get promoted move across the company and I just felt like I was the man. You know I felt like I know what I'm doing. I had just turned thirty two at the time. And and I, and I walked into Gopro looking around like man I'd no more than these. These folks here I got more experience at at that time I just spent. Three years traveling the world doing brand building I had seen the world I felt cultured I felt like I had all the elements to come in and really drive that company to. Growth. And every measure of success that I had was the complete wrong scorecard. You know. All the ways that I had been brought up everything that I learned was not the the the script that I needed to be reading off. It wasn't the book that was necessary to be followed. At a company like that a startup that grew grassroots with friends and family that grew door to door store to store community community you know and I made so many mistakes in terms of a mindset in terms of work ethic in terms of awareness in terms of respect for people had been there before and terms of really understanding the grind I had no idea what the grind man you know I I mean honestly it at a big company you work your ass off but you don't grind. You don't get your hands as dirty as they need to be to build something from scratch. You know it's a whole different beast. And Because I didn't know that. I Rub people the wrong. Way. And I inadvertently came off in a way that I didn't mean to come off because to be honest. I, really did love it there. I really did believe in what they were doing I really wanted to be accepted. I wanted people to like me I wanted to be of the core members of the team and and I think the folks over there felt that from my heart but my exterior, my actions didn't really speak to that. And it wasn't until I left Gopro and started to build on my own with be somebody that I really started to realize all mistakes that I made. As sort of realize man. Now I understand why? When I left at five PM and everybody was grinding. They looked at me differently now I understand when I used to come to the events and not roll up my sleeves and get my hands dirty and and and start setting stuff up or making sure the audio was working and things like that. They they looked at me enroll there is now I understand when I used to be the guy on TV being interviewed. and. The media and getting the publicity but not really having history and heritage with the brand and the company why people got frustrated. You know what I mean so I took all that. And when I realized that my first phone call was adjusted to be like he told you about it. I was like man I'm sorry I screwed up but I took that to heart and I told myself. Now I'm going to do it differently. I'm going to be respectful to process I'm going to be grateful for the grind and I'm always GonNa honor the people that have been there from the beginning on tenure matters if you are on the frontlines if you're on the battlefield in the early days in you and you push your way through, I'm never gonNA forget that and we're going to be in it together and that has become such a driving force in such A. Pivotal part of what we're building it be somebody and BS group, international man. And it all came from me making mistakes and and really failing. At GOPRO. and to me, the biggest lesson is you can completely screw something up, but you can be totally off base..

"The Justin whoa compelled special. We had so much amazing content such an amazing conversation that we had to split up into two episodes of I, the be somebody podcast. It's like, Christmas in July it was such an amazing I part of the conversation we're, GONNA, pick it up back today and and just dive right in. So just unless go I just want to talk to you just in about how the culture gopro evolved in good ways and also in bad ways. You know pros and cons when the company went public because when I left, it was a few months before. The culture was still super strong. It was all about the the the community was about passionate about love about belief. And then right, as I left, we started or you all started to bring on outside folks that were more financial. Experts and things you know business leaders. But not, really understanding the ethos and and core and DNA of the brand. and. That would love to hear your learnings from that transition from grossed type Yo to where the culture ended up today. Sure. Yeah. Let the juicy one. No I mean cultures interesting for Gopro because I think that, yeah, I mean the the IPO was a it's like a crossroads for the culture of Gopro. And I think it started before. The IPO. But you know you had this great family. Like the Gopro family, right like that's like a thing like if you look up like Hashtag Gopro family. It's a full community. There's like a facebook group and it's like robuck like it's like all these Berber Gopro employees that are part of this families super cool. and it's a testament to the power like that internal culture and community, and it's still there I mean. It's evolved and and how it ball I think was that. For many many years certainly when I started and as a lot of people came on board. Were excited about financial opportunity. But. It was not a driving force for the majority of US I don't believe. I think we truly drank the KOOLADE and believed in. Building this awesome community and like delivering like amazing high quality products that help you capture and share your amazing experiences whatever those experiences maybe and there was a purity and almost like an innocence because we didn't know. Anything beyond what we were doing right like a lot of had no prior experience in this particular space right but cameras space, the contents based like we. Were not verson I like like I didn't have a box to think outside. Like. You know what I mean like. Very everything was fair game for me for marketing because I don't know better something to try stuff. Like that was awesome and that was part of the culture, right? So we got protected airmen and Like. Go to like I remember showing up at places like. All right. So how do we set up you cabinet like I have no idea but we're gonNA, try you know 'cause I got money to burn. Right Oprah. And that was the energy and the attitude was like go for it attitude. So. You know go big or go home like think you see it do it. And even though the point we had that. On our packaging at one point but But yeah, I mean we were driven to grow the brand we were driven to. Sell, as many cameras and get as much content out there as possible and so like when I think about that. And then where we headed to. I think there was a shift in the why? And I think that there was like the why for so many of us was about all the things I just described, but then we started. You know drive towards the IT. Oh. And then you you know unfortunately, we lost Kirk Manson. You know just a little bit but he was our CFO. And we lost them. You know just a little bit before the IPO and. You know I don't know how much an effect that had per se but you started to get new executives coming in. And I think they did a great job at like taking US public and Y- helping to professionalize. Their business you know guys coming in from Microsoft backgrounds or. You Know Hulu like you know or studios game you know things like that right? Guys, right. So it's like people would like crazy resume, which is a you know shows the strength of the brand like we were attracting like awesome talent. But I think one of the missing. Links in there was building. And like who had built something versus who would sort of like stepped into something. and then furthermore, I think there's like just spitting the culture that you went through the process of trying to fit the culture right and you know came out like a different person and you you definitely spend some time should try to figure it out. I think as we shifted. We saw if like people coming in for a different reason and it's not like they didn't inform US probably similar to the way you came right where you saw from the outside looking in. This Awesome Brand Look Pretty Paul makes any money here. and. You can make some money here right? The dollar signs and like, yeah, I want to help. But like I'm GonNa make it big like that's sort of this whole silicon valley man polity right and get rich quick. Idea and like. Gopro the overnight success the Knicks started working on in two thousand two we went public in two thousand fourteen was twelve years. Is Not, overnight like that was a lot of hard work and dedication and just sticking with it to get to that point, and so we have new people coming in, they couldn't appreciate it. So similar your story you could appreciate it because you didn't do it like you weren't there one proctor and gamble about bill right? You know like so you don't have a reference point or context to truly understand what it takes for bill it. Now, you may understand how to run something that mature. And like set up and infrastructure's solid. But part of the problem with US Gopro I feel like we were. On such fire in moving so fast and growing so fast that like. You can hardly interview these people. The best. Culture. Let alone like you know ensure that they're gonNA actually have the background to do the work that you need them to do. And so I feel like we we ended up top heavy because we've got a war chest of capital the like host. IPO. And we wanted to do entertainment and all these other things and I think on paper a lot of it sounded grit but I think there was this almost a sense of like. Well, we can just by our way. We all this money. Let's just buyer wake. You see that with a lot of like you know investments you know look at what saw thanks and They're throwing billions of dollars around it stuff like bill kind of like ideas like they aren't even like legitimate like sustainable businesses. Yeah. And they're like garnering hundreds.

"Yelled at me one time and you like I I used to drive the Ryder truck to Salt Lake City and I would I would drive like seven hours and pull out the furniture the IKEA furniture. I'd build that overnight I'd have it ready for the morning I'd sell all day, disassemble the product, put it back in the truck and drive back to California. When a forty eight hour period and I was like I even like process what you were saying Bro until until I was doing it myself with be somebody and I'm telling you brother I want you to know when I was doing it. The first person I. Thought of because I was like now I get it gives me goosebumps still man because that's what life's about is. I think you call the. Call I, remember I, get it your Agai-. I get it now. Hallelujah. I get it now well, Hey, anybody ever tells you that you can't rebuild I. Keep her. because. Now, we made like one piece of I hear furniture last for like a hundred. I remember that you guys started like the little table in the corner of these big trade shows and I remember talking to Nick in back in the day news like man how he was like thinking in the early days how do I drive some traffic to our little tiny table in the corner so you started doing this like go pro pro pro chant and then that peop- started driving foot traffic and by the time they're what ball there's always over there. Yeah. What's all this of there and by the time I got there. It was legendary. When you were at, you know see s or NABC, which is National Association of broadcasters like the big media conferences like the Gopro booth was like the loudest Cillizza rowdiest it was most energy the music. Use Electric The music was loud bills pack and and when. I would watch and at that time, nick would come for the first Gopro Gopro Gopro like chant giveaway and we'd give away product and then he would leave and transition and I remember the first time I got to do that man and unique were there and like I got to get up on the box of whatever a cameras and stand up and be like y'all ready for some Gopro envy like over a Gopro Gopro. It was so awesome man. I still got that picture and it was literally thousands of people in front of you in the energy and I used to tell my team and I tell my team like I want that Gopro energy I was like I want us to get in trouble for music being too loud. You know what? I mean. Troublemakers. Would like we always have like a van like a sports mobile or sprinter van and it was all like raft and look tool. But man, we were slinging cameras out of the thing trade show. What you're not supposed to do that, but we would be like handed. It was like Super Fun You know just to like have that like direct to consumer experience of these places and I remember NABC one year there was like an hour long line to the back of the van to buy cameras and we ended up getting trouble for it. slap on the wrist whatever but But I remember here in two different people different way they like what are we in line for and they had already been in life or a bit. Like. What? You been here at least fifteen minutes. It was just the place to be apparently they got plenty of TV's music got to work can't manufacture. Cool. Honestly, you can't manufacture cool and the way. Mean Gopro, which is cool. Man Gopro cool to energy the authenticity the passion behind it, and I learned passion from you in A and team and and I always felt it. I didn't really know how to articulate it until I was around you guys in that became kind of DNA be somebody man. For sure and I love that I. Mean It's funny. You brought up like the whole community or like the seven layers agencies. When you're in the proctor and gamble will and you know for us like I think you know why did companies like Sony? Or Nikon or you know contour or whatever like some of the companies that were you know our direct competition? They, just didn't spend the time. They didn't have the people the people to like I always like I built out my team. I always try to hire somebody better than me I always try to hire somebody that was an expert in the field of sports and entertainment or how the just knew a better I mean I, my background was not in marketing. It was off and I love sports I paid attention But I'm observant you know I liked study people I like to work with people like to create a win win scenario. So for me, it'd be a relationship manager and doing deals with people like I. Want us all to be happy at the end of the day. So I think that's partly why I had success but as a company I, think why we had such was because we spent the time on the ground. Meeting people. And we didn't just go write the checks. We took awhile actually to write those checks and we took our time and we took the time to bill and I think that like a lot of people that came in and closer to the IPO. Couldn't understand because you don't know what you don't know but to your point about culture and all of that like you couldn't have known because you just weren't. In that, I wasn't either came from td Ameritrade. So for me I, got the experience that organic growth but like unlike a lot of my. Coworkers at Gopro I feel like I had that corporate experience as well. Right. So I, actually saw both sides of the equation and I could see potential for us, but also trying to thread the needle like stating. Like authentic to who we are and at the end of the day like I still to. Sponsor, the small guy and a lot of the small guys in in different sports because. I actually felt like that made us. Cooler. Like those guys don't get the love, you know it's always the big names like get the love and people like Oh. We gotta get Kelly slater. We gotta get Shaun White. We gotta get all the. First weekend and go. First Rican and Gopro we we we signed Shaun white and it was like literally split the company the company was split on. Our we sell now. Why are we signed this big name athlete all that stuff remember. I mean, ironically I dated his sister way back when. and. What? It's like it's funny. 'cause like Mommy made sure she made sure that's how well before we had our meeting and it was like years later but. Funny 'cause like he chose gives me a hug man he's a good guy. But you know what? What made a difference for Gopro in the end still does its authenticity right and it's like a genuine connection and are genuine relationship with these different communities and we went vertical by vertical crawl walk run strategy right and we bill the brand by getting to know people and not loyalty that you gained from those relationships can transcend like the brand. Yeah, even to this day I mean as we were getting the kind humans, I mean, I'll tell you what like the number of people from the community that we? Came together for Gopro. I mean a lot of that communities coming together support US already right you know just because they they loved the experience was Gopro and they like what we're doing now and get wild Morris were growing and evolving this thing but. You know the community is the ultimate like goal for us.

"You just like let's do this. And so in two thousand, seven, I basically quit my job at td Ameritrade. against you know the better judgement of a lot of friends and family I mean they thought I was crazy like they're like, seriously you're gonNA go. Leave this nice comfortable job security of TD ameritrade benefits and all of that to go join Your College Buddies Camera Company that nobody's heard of. And they these little funky risk cameras I. Don't understand like have you heard of Canon or Nikon? Sony. Even have a chance you know and it's like, okay but. As, far as I see, it nick about to pay me a salary I was taking a pay cut and losing benefits but hey, it was gonNA carry my bills. And it was an opportunity for me to jump ship from a path that I didn't feel like it was going to fulfill me. So it was a critical move for me and you know I feel like it was a pivotal moment and it's been a seminal moment really that I couldn't have anticipated. but the beauty of it was that it was like taking a chance on. Doing something else and that's like one of my biggest takeaways. was having the courage to leave that comfort. So right and. Thirty two taking a risk on something that really you know on all on paper probably didn't have much of a chance. You, know right. but anyways, yeah. So use interesting I less proctor and gamble at thirty two. To come to go pro. You know in in in in and I felt at that time very similar to you like this is a risk for me. You guys already crushing it but like you know I was a in the safety and security of my job psg I just got promoted. They were moving me to Geneva. I was ready to go to Switzerland and I was GonNa live ex pat life, and then literally two weeks after meeting Nick. I was in San Francisco. So you know what happened so fast. It happened so fast and you know but your twenties, you're trying to figure shit out. You're just trying to have fun like do different things explore different things not really thinking about purpose or passion or anything. You're just doing stuff when you get into your thirties I really believe you're like. You realize what I think I can do something more I think life is about something more what is my? What is my purpose what what could be my impact what could be my legacy, and then that's when you start to ask the smart questions that leads you to the right answers the tough questions that lead you the right answers and now. I just turned forty last year I think in your forties now hopefully, if you did it right and if you really focus in your blessed, then you kind of know it and now you're like full full force into your path. Yeah I mean I think man if you're willing to take the leap of faith to go for it and also take the Taking a chance, but it's like. You have to be willing to accept the possibility of failure. Right and really it's like even thinking about it is it even failure or is it just an experience that you learn from their long as you're still standing? I. Think like you know that's the way. I try to look at. US continual learning and and you know it's you need to fail at things in order to stand up and be strong or or to you had better next time and so on. So forth. So you know for me as I look at like even what we're doing today with kind. Humans, I mean. It's a risk but I I feel like regardless of what happens in the end if it's a successful business or not like I think it's a successful endeavor and that we're making a positive impact on people no matter what and night that will never be taken away from what we find regardless of what's on the books right? Even Gopro. Like on paper as a publicly traded company like Gopro, his struggle. But if I look at what it's done and what it's doing and the power of the brand still today. I mean when you buy a product, you're not like this talk right? Right. You know like that it's relevant to the brand experience for a customer unless you're shareholder. Maybe shareholder. which I am by the way. Hey. Now, there's still a little fighting chance. Keep a hope a lot but. I mean at the end of the day, it's like you you gotta take the risk and you gotta like understand that out is part of life and he never take a risk. You'll probably live with some sort of regret. That you didn't try something that you actually believe. Do you know? Yeah so it's so true. But you know my my biggest influence and inspiration. My life is my mom. And the thing she taught me a lot of things but the the the piece of advice that she's giving me has always stuck with me and rang the most true and powerful as failures fade but regrets lasts forever. And she's like you don't have any regrets and I went to go pro because I didn't WanNa be at proctor and gamble for ten more years and be like man I. Wish I was a part of that Gopro experience I left go because pre IPO because I was like I know there's potential to make a Lotta money here and be a part of this rocket ship and I felt a part of it at that time I left because I didn't want to say you know what? This experienced this this financial gain all that was not worth it because I didn't go do what I really felt my calling was or what I really needed to do So to me that that anthem of not having regrets you know has always driven me. I mean I think it. It wasn't interesting progression for you like. Give You my perspective like I felt like you were coming around like like in terms of the culture and the brand fit like and and just the touch back on that piece. Like there was a very unique and special culture and energy within GOPRO. That's like I've never experienced that in any other place and we're trying to replicate it a little bit where'd what we're building a kind humans and we've got some of the same people but. With that said I mean that was a tough culture that crap. So like I give you credit for like your resilience and your ability Kinda deal with like the getting dumped on by a lot of people and getting a hard time because not a lot of people can take that. You know I think maybe helps you first start. In preparation. Mark. Cuban company. But. But that's sad I mean dude I mean that was huge that you push through it and then I felt like when you were getting up in like doing that launched a campaign which was like an epic watch. Did you still definitely goes down in history as one of the best launches? Ever. Hero three best ever ever. Yeah. We crossed it and then man you you led that effort. came up with a big vision we executed while and that was a huge hit. So you know. So despite all those challenges that you well, I think that like set the table for you actually find yourself somewhere too. You know because the de force you to some uncomfortable places. and think about yourself probably and reflect on yourself in ways it had to do before. And I think that helps you actually arrive at like what you've been doing all along, which is e somebody right now we're doing it. It's just you got gotta pay the bills. I got like birth this job and likenesses a successful career for me to be carpet and gamble that the echo my you're you're playing the game right and you were super successful but in the end, like somebody is.

"What's happening cash. How you doing man so great to hear Your Voice. So great to be in touch again, man the last time i. saw you was on a sandy coast in northern California man. We're talking to somebody and. The future and look at you now. Society Man Thank you so much for having me on the show. Thanks. For other man I I can't wait to get into your your story and share with everybody that listen to show your your background your journey what you're so inspiring and of course, everything that you're doing with kind humans. But before we get into that man Herbie this is becoming a trend before we get into anything I dislike to talk to people about how much I piss them off. Yeah. Back in the day because I didn't realize it because I came in from procter and gamble. I was on the tide brand and and when you work on detergent at proctor and gamble, it's like the top of the world man it's like you've hit you've made it. You've made it so you're tired. And I went over to go pro and I thought I was like the man I walked in and I was supposed to be on social communications helping marketing. Literally the first day of my job I moved my whole life from Cincinnati San Francisco Garden apartment downtown. We were up in half Moon Bay a little too story that two story white cottage. It was a transformed best western and I walked in and had interviews. With all the people that were supposed to report to me including two people that word the sisters of our co Nick Woman, and then I met with Justin and every single person told me Some version of I don't know why the Hell your here. And what you? Just. said it the most eloquently and the most you know pleasantly but he's still said it so. And I know that sentiment carried on for like six months man, you couldn't stand me right? GOPRO. Well I mean. I would say that I was probably the closest one. Could. Take. But I think you you. You CAN'T I. came. In with a nice fat resume and you know I think you're all. Ready, to jump on the GOPRO train which was on fire and the you're ready to hop on the rocket ship which mean the the wildest ride the wildest times and For what it's worth cash. I mean I. Think we taught each other something during that period. Yeah Man. We give you a hard time because you deserve it at the time. I think we need it to be humbled a little bit. Yeah well. But. But for what it's worth, you also came in with knowledge and experience in just a sense of energy and you know a willingness to jump on jump on stage in might get up and like preach and I think that like you've always been a great evangelist and despite whatever challenges we may have had like I mean, yeah, man you got hard time like you jumped in with the Woodman sisters. I. Think. You kinda didn't have a chance. I will say. You realize you got like some Gucci sneakers on or something. To Go, that's like action sports adventures work like. Every crowd but but hey, who said I remember I remember when I was like talking to nick and we were finalizing the deal for me to come over there or I was the only person at proctor and gamble to wear a suit every day it no one even did it p. and G. But I'm like you know I'm GonNa keep I'm GonNa keep my brand equity like I'm like I'm going to be me when I go pro I'm looking at Jordan in a studio who used to sell me all those suits way back in the day. I'm GonNa, wear these but I'm GonNa wear like my sports coats and wore like was wearing sports coats everyday. Everyone's wearing like t shirts in like you know the trucker hats and everything and coming in in my sports coats it took only about three and a half months who's for Jato like switched me though like Unique. Humiliated me, Hughes, who's you humiliated me. Well you know what? I what I got hired to go pro part of the dialogue without email and back and forth with neck. I mean literally wearing slacks and like I I went through this whole thing about like Tuck in my shirt td Ameritrade. backoffice institutional division. You know advisor came through or something like the output on the suit, but in general like Polos and my slacks or whatever. It wasn't that bad but. When I got hired to go it was like Nick's like well, if you're ready to ditch the slack and shiny shoes for your board shorts and flip flop of through this. So I literally had a pile of like dry cleaning that sat in my closet for like twelve months at least four I did. Literally, live in my board shortened from t shirts and I still kinda. Up that wrong it's funny. I remember going to an event and I had like my backwards hat and I have my little like Billabong tea or something and I had some board shorts on and everybody was like all right cash finally. Welcome come brother we've been waiting for you. Loosened up. You know. But. But Man, you know what? In Herbie? I promise we're going to get into justice background because really really amazing but you know just. I learned so much man and I always reference it. Because you know I came from somewhere where I was doing really well, and I was looked at us someone that was on a successful path and. When I came to go pro I didn't understand culture. In a way. That was important and essential enough to be successful at a company that was growing and a company that small. P. And G. One, hundred, thousand people and I think one hundredth employee Gopro so you guys had already been doing so much padding even understand I couldn't even comprehend it and I made so many mistakes who's that I had no idea I was making until I started building my own company and then I would just feel battle time. I'm like Oh my God now I, know what who's was talking about I was like I wish I could say sorry Oh. Man, but you're good. I mean the cool thing was that at least for our relationship like I always felt like we could talk. And I also like to take things head on like I. Rather tell you to your face and talk about it. Then talk behind your back in might create the sort of insidious like energy. Rather like, okay. Let's put it on the table rock it out. You know let's both wearing because you've got a perspective to you know. Try.

Should Social Media Platforms Be Regulated

"Where do you think it ends up as it moves forward? I mean. Obviously there's a lot of people look at regulating some of these companies. You consider Given these platforms are so important whether it's twitter or read it or facebook facebook's the biggest among them Where's the responsibility? Do you think there's responsibility on these tech companies to to act because just the other day Mark Zuckerberg said we're somewhere between a telecom company and publisher and it reminded me of that old skit. I'm I'm showing my age here. Is it a dessert topping? Our FLOOR WAX. You know if you remember from. Snl What are they? I mean because it's on the table saying they're saying that they are not a network. They're saying they're not they don't have the journalistic. Operation Right publisher. But can I switch the question? Send it to you. So what would you do? You think they need to be regulated with. Yes and in which way how? Well I think if you look at the top. Ten companies or the the top companies right now are tech companies in terms of market valuation. Maybe not in the market today but but because we had a sell off but most of the economic growth has happened through tech in the last ten years essentially and a lot of the wealth creation. Everything the top ten rich people are all tech people it's an industry unlike Wall Street or cars or pharmaceuticals even if it's problematic regulation. They have regulation. There's not one law on the books about Internet companies at all not one and in fact the one law that does exist is very aberrations toward them which allows them to be immune from Any legal action would it be government? Regulation you went. You went out on a big sensor now now. So how would that work well? It's it's an honest westbound on univision's responsible for the things that is on on your air. If you or your careless things you create cause havoc you. Are you pay for it? And I think it's the responsibility. It's being legally liable for creating things either sloppily or with Malan tent or things responsible for what I do and you are responsible. There's someone else who's posting on your network your platform right. Where's the responsibility? The New York Times is extra responsible for those two in their abrogated around the comments but at the same time on some level they have to create tools where it can't it can't be used for disinformation they have to be more. It's going to be incredibly complex to figure it out because they can sort of get out of it and at the same time have created the tools and such a sloppy way that you know you can look at any of the areas of the world in Myanmar. They didn't have enough speakers. They didn't do this. They didn't do that. They do things. I'll give you a good example. Facebook live for example. And I've told this story before but when they created it they bring in borders to look at it before and they were all excited and they get all their like literally. It's like twelve year old boys all they're going look what I made. It's so cool and I was in the room and I said okay. This is a live immediate live posting by anybody in the world can do this and I said what do you do if someone murders someone on this. What do you do if someone can suicide? What do you do about bullies? What about child pornography live child pornography? What about if a mass murder puts it Gopro on the top of his head and starts broadcasting and the person who was showing it to me said. You're such a bummer. Cara was like yeah I am. That's me you know. I had some experience with the human race and I've noticed they when they get tools they tend to like use them in a malevolent way. Sometimes and it was the and I was like. Where are the safeguards that you put into place before? And they were like well like they hadn't that part of it they hadn't thought of now that's changed. Obviously when they create things now because of the experiences but not because they had any. They weren't sued for it. They didn't pay any price for the mistakes they made. And so I'm trying to figure out how you create a price for when you make shoddy products. That's an interesting proposition. But as as a journalist we cannot just wait see well. Let's see if they regularly them or not. Our responsibility is completely different. I thank our responsibility would be to find facts. Two from those warnings power. And that's what we need to do right absolutely but I think one of the things is has repercussions well beyond that. There's a really great series in the New York Times recently about child pornography on these sites and the buried little is being done to mitigate the problem the you can do that with addictiveness with teens. They know very well inside these companies. How addictive these products are a tin to cigarettes akin to other things still not doing anything about it yet facilitating so you have to sort of start to think. They're not benign and so if they're not benign. They're not making things that affect people there has to be some kind of regulation smart regulation that doesn't hinder innovation and when they when they worried about hindering innovation they tend to go to the China argument. Well China if we don't do something China will beat us. If we don't do this and we'll have you know they'll be running the Internet and the next era but let me just put it this way. What would happen in authoritarian governments? What would happen in China? What would happen you Saudi Arabia? What would happen in Cuba well? They're already doing charity using these tools. Exactly the way you WanNa do that. No no no no no of course not but what I'm talking about is they tend to say that there can't be without freedom for them and in fact when you have one or two or three companies in this case it would be facebook. Google facebook and Google essentially sort of buying up all the companies shutting down innovation. You don't get the kind of innovation needed to create new paradigms. We stay on the political conversation. How about a window for for a fact that a precedent or a candidate is lying right and that he's buying simplicity. Should we stop them? We don't facebook doesn't they? Made the decision not to I mean. How do you feel about that? You're get let's get back to politics. What is the political landscape? Look now Bloomberg spending. Every every time he has he's got a lot of dimes but spending enormous amounts of money on social media on facebook. The trump campaign quite good at it. Brad parcel is genius at using social media. Would you do if you were running? Facebook or twitter. Decided to cut them off. Say WE'RE NOT GONNA have lies? We can't even figure it agree with you that that in certain situations chop pornography you mentioned for instance. There has to be done. There has to be something done but my problem is with political. Discourse ARE WE GOING TO START CENSORING POLITICAL DISCOURSE? Even if. We don't want to about white nationalist. Should we stop that? Should companies stop that kind of information? They do sometimes they do other. They my issues that it's done in a haphazard way by people who are not necessarily I would like elected officials and citizens to start talking about this as a larger thing rather than say in the case of facebook. It's a company that is run by someone who cannot be fired. Ever you know. He's like a dictator of that company. He's unfirable he controls the board. He controls everything. And so you want one person making decisions that affect lots of people and it's something that everyone needs to think about at the very least and and I think these conversations obviously is going to continue but Site cannot do anything about it right my responsibility. I'm just going back to my role. Yeah we have we have to be someone is lying. We have to say it if someone is harming children we have to say it and if a president is lying to say except that when you get in a digital environment it's different than a network if there's a law ally on a network. Everyone sees it in this case they can send a million different lies to a million. Different people mall geared toward that though the information they gleaned now probably one of the great ways to solve. This would be to have a really good privacy bill to have to know about what happens to your data to not be tracked the way or to be not micro targeted and so they can't send a million different lies to someone That's not even being done there. There's no privacy bill in this country. We're the only country There's a lot going on in Europe. There's a lot going on in Australia. We have a bill in California. That's the defacto rule for this country. But there's not a national privacy. Go to protect your most important things that you would do is regulations on content on privacy. No Privacy Privacy's starts to privacy and data starts to take care of the rest of it I think yeah and I don't want them to use my information and I bet you they do all the time. I don't have a phone but right now. If I sign off of everything actually even signed off they ping you hundreds of times and know everything about you without your consent and it's interesting. We were having a conversation before we started and we were saying well. This is not the record while the fact is that. I'm assuming as you are everything that I that I say on. This phone is being track and somebody's listening or reading. They are so that's the way that's the way of the record doesn't exist anymore everything's public. Okay let's talk a little bit about covering this election. How do you look forward to it? And and and and I do want to talk a little bit about immigration and where you think we are on it because that story one of the problems of this New News Environment Marin is it's very twitchy it's very quick and people move on from the next thing and so This week we're talking about this then we're talking about this and Oh yeah impeachment. That seemed like six years ago impeachment. And now we're now we're in the I guess the Bernie Sanders phase of the discussion. But it goes from one thing. The other immigration really has gotten lost. This discussion not necessarily the way I see the big picture the way here in the United States worth having four major changes one has to do with climate change. That's that's another. That's another issue. Another has to do with technological revolution that we just we just discuss another incredibly important has to do with the metoo movement in the fight for equality in this country and then the last one. The last change is what I called. Latino wave in twenty forty four everyone in this country everyone is going to be a minority in that major change. That's that's an incredible demographic revolution that we're seeing right now. Latinos will go from sixty million to more than one hundred million and nobody is going to be able to make it to the White House or any position of power without the Latino vote. That's that's what's happening in this election.

Ricoh Unveils 'Ultra-Rugged' WG-70 Compact Camera

"There's been lots of discussions about the death of the point in his shoot and I've always said and I've written articles on this as well as you do. Videos that other than the higher higher end cameras such as the recently announced Fujifilm x one hundred. v Sony Rx one hundred line and the line is higher end cameras is and they will always exist even a like a cue to a certain extent but that the lower end morton shoots the only ones that will survive or the specialty cameras such as action in camps like Gopro rose three sixty cameras and rugged waterproof cameras and as predicted Rico just announced their latest update to their WG raggedly camera lineup the new WG seventy and. I had said that this camera will survive. Now it's not a huge update much of it being internal in terms of processing housing and things like that but the specs stole very impressive now. It's rugged underwater camera and it's a macro camera so they almost sort of sell it as a my my underwater microscope and it has a decent sixteen megapixel one over two point three inch sensor which is very similar to what you would find on some of the higher end smartphones owns with a solid twenty eight to one hundred and forty millimeter equivalent. Zoom Lens and with the two flashes one including kind of wraps around the Lens it south. That's probably for the macro mode. But that's not why you're buying this cameron you're buying because it's waterproof down to fourteen meters or forty six feet shock proof from from false up to one point six meters or five feet freeze proof down to minus sixty degrees and pressure proof up to one hundred kilogram force or killer law pounds and so this cameras. That bit of an anomaly You know having all these re powerful rugged you can think of. Construction sites can think of divers income the utilities kind of a government. Sort of thing where you're doing serving but it also has very weird consumer like features like it has a selfie assist mode a smile captured mode and this is a really weird one a face shrinking mo and I seriously think this is an Asian thing as why would anyone want to shrink their face and also has a time lapse Moan would actually is pretty useful now either way. This is a two hundred two hundred eighty eighty dollar. US Priced cameras reasoning price for all the things that it can do in all the rugged features that are built into it and I'm really glad that dedicated and and especially point and shoots are still around like this camera

"Travel kits just for the cheese it ball I mean there's just not enough money in college athletics no there's not a that's right I am Baxley pref I'd like what they're doing it the chick fillet people author ninety dollar visa gift card because if you look at like the cheese at both the GoPro hero and all that stuff it's probably a four dollars worth of equipment you rather be able to pick what you want days ago like they're giving money to the player yeah yes except it's not because it's casually disguised as a gift with the rise of fossil watch in a football also as well and I wondered if they're not disclosing the national championship game what they're going to be giving out to the Mercedes Benz Superdome so maybe you can one of the two teams that can make it past the college football semi final if you were to on a bill or like you were talking about with the party to tell them when the festival is for eight days out from Ohio state and Clemson and for some reason people think Clemson's gonna win this game and I if you've watched both teams this season there is that a team that's dominate on both sides of the ball then there's Clemson sound that's kind of where I hear I your field of aka is going with that most of the same with LSU in Oklahoma I think the Tigers role in that one because yesterday the Sooners lost their best pass rusher yep if you could ask me Eric how you gonna beat LSU Michael you gotta take care Jo borough and it's tough to do when you don't have a pass rusher specially for an Oklahoma defense that yes they got Alex Grange but there still may be you know tackling is this question will I guess if you want to Alex range was at Ohio state last year in tackling was questionable the question what last edit nationwide the blue jackets made three wins in a row with a three to overtime win over Jeff Carter and the Los Angeles Kings Zakarin ski had a goal early in the first period he's been on the most productive players the jackets of had this season even with being injured for three weeks just must be out for a month but he came back early with a shoulder and for towards and the team it's it's you know kind of lines by committee or just throwing stuff at the wall and see what works because you've had at least every game for the past week now somebody's laughed and not come back in the men put on the injured list cannot consume left the game with a lower body injury but no word on his status I forget who was it payments of ours apart I was sick Lou and peak broke his hand so yeah the jackets again one one last three seven points in the last six points in the last contest that got New Jersey tomorrow night at seven from the central Ohio Honda dealer sports desk there greasers radio six ten WTVN thank you Eric seven forty five and been looking for this medical a filling in for Joel Riley jewel course regularly has our next guest on each and every week Kevin Kerr FAQ eyes in movie dot com and Kevin this is a big one rise of sky Walker I I'm just looking on social media I'm seeing the full gamut like people some people love it some people like questioning it you've seen it what do you think well it all depends on what you thought of the last movie the last movie which was last year I came out two years ago I was very disappointed everyone I was too I I I I was not although the Star Wars ones that did maybe my least favorite one yeah you know the the force awakens was such a great return of the series and then when they have this one there was stuff of loose character in the new character of rose there and and and sort of the cold fusion of the story and what the what the teams and their purpose was was kind of a mess so I was disappointed in into the vice of movie I know other people who sings the greatest stars movie ever of those people around of course the last movie was not great and I when I thought I was on this one I thought it was a return to form I felt like I was watching the Star Wars movie again at the excitement of the fun and the spectacle and had the camaraderie and it was just it felt like what what we've been getting from the franchise and not some somber morose heavy art film that just got a big budget if you love the last when you're pregnant disappointed in this one because he throws a lot of the stuff that they did the last film cut out the window or try to read Khan and fix it me I love that fact I love the fact that they kind of went back to what works and and they actually began back together on this one this was Cary fisheries for significant amount I mean she's not gonna be at at every single scene but you know they had deleted footage from her next on cut the all on I'd use scenes from previous films so they're able to act edit this together and do some digital trickery and you know they they they've got her entire like this scanned into a computer so they can rebuild her whenever they really want yeah does this put a bowl on the Star Wars or do you you know they they say that but is there going to be another Star Wars at some point at the start of the last Star Wars it's the end of the sky Walker saga story of Eric and Scott Walker and Luke Skywalker but there's a whole galaxy more stuff to do I mean Disney did not pay for billion dollars to get this franchise to just make a couple movies and we which is Kevin your favorite star of the Star Wars series and where does this one rank in your rank well I just did that last night I put the first one is the bass just because it was what I grew up with is what it was when I saw when I was five and then of course empire strikes back is next I have great love for that this will bring someone the middle but it should be out there most of them are good I even like some of the prequels I I'm just a Star Wars kid I grew up with it so this one like somewhere in the middle but it still were the Star Wars movie it's not down to the bottom you know you don't like return to excuse me phantom menace a lot of people don't like air and the last January I put way at the bottom you'll source holiday specials down at the bottom to but yeah this one was good all right I've seen mixed reviews on the the sky Walker movie I am not seen mixed reviews on cats I haven't seen anyone that likes it yet what did you think a cat's first of all you got a temper or what the critics are saying I mean were a temperamental bunch at a lot of people didn't give us the cats early and people had a pile on attitude on this one the book can you do use it makes it sound like cats is the worst movie ever came out it's not it's look it's about a patient of a stage play that's about a bunch of cats sing about themselves lot of image around characters but you know what it is it's kind of this fun little romp of love with these characters if you saw in the eighties and you saw the stage play the love that you're probably going to enjoy this one are you know if you if you if you're not in the you know watching two hours of taxing about themselves you're you're probably going to have a problem with that plus the C. GI people are dumping all over the sea just get actual it's pretty cool myself I I think the the special effects of credit me well the big names in this right Taylor swift and Jennifer Hudson like walls in there well you've got the I've got them in very Reggie denture ready in a callin ray Winstone there are a lot of names that you'll recognize plus a lot of people you wouldn't regulars were either singers of the park from the Broadway from stage that dancers and that sort of thing so you do have an interesting cast in their but yeah the the they're all done up in a few lines sort of way so if you like to catch the play you might enjoy this if you're not into watching singing cats you're probably not gonna lie yeah I I think it's of of having not seen the the the stage production myself I'm I'm gonna go on a limb and say it's a good adaptation of that I just think that most people haven't seen cats and it's not a big deal to them and.

"And I've got my I annual list to the best of the year. You might find a few things in here that might inspire you to buy today. Not that's my goal. I'm just going to tell you some of the products that I loved the first one the one the tops. My List is really an easy one and it's not a cyber Monday sales sort of product. It's Disney plus TV. I mean if I told you a year ago the Disney was going to put out a streaming service and they might show if you classics show a few marble movies maybe few cartoons. You'd say. Hey that sounds pretty good if I told you they were gonNA show a lot of Disney movies and a lot of marvel movies and a lot of cartoons and it was only going to cost seven dollars. You'd say okay. Wow that's incredible. I don't think any other tech product this year caught our attention like Disney plus. So that's my pick for the best tech of the year followed by the IPHONE. Eleven pro every year for the past few years apple has barely done much to make make the new iphones better mostly. They've been emphasizing a more powerful chip this year. They really improve the battery finally and they really radically improved proved the camera the pictures. I'm getting on this iphone. Eleven are just there to good there too. Good for a smartphone that I really love having three lenses instead. Head of the to the ultra-wide the wide and the portrait lands which they call a telephoto that and night mode where you can shoot in the dark. I haven't done a lot of it but when it works it works and we talked a lot about connected speakers this year. I'm a big fan of the video display in. Its last year. I said the Google home hub. That was the best product of the year. The new version also makes my list. It has a strange little name. It's now called the nest hub. Max But I'm still GONNA Call A.. Google because that's what comes from what I love about. It is a bigger screen. It has a ten inch beautiful screen. And if you use Google photos like I do. You've got the best digital photo frame that has ever come out in the traditional connect speaker big fan of the Sonos move which is so noces. I Battery Powered Bluetooth and Wifi Speaker. That can answer to either Amazon's personal assistant or Google's the other speaker I love is the echo studio from Amazon D- It's the best sounding echo speaker ever in. It's one ninety nine. Samsung makes a great smartphone. That doesn't get enough credit. The S. Ten Galaxy S. ten. This year is a winner. It has a really really nice old screen and expandable memory. So if you're not into apple and the iphone this is the best galaxy that I've seen speaking of apple the air pods pro major a major improvement over the air pods. I'll give you three reasons. Why one they stick in your ear to best sounding earphones? I've ever heard three. They don't look Dorky. Like the original version now at two fifty rather pricey there about almost twice as much as the new Amazon Echo Buds. The Echo Buds. Don't sound as great as the air pods but they stick in the ear and the answer to Alexa Camera. Land Gopro hero eight. Massive improvement approve. -ment over the hero seven which was a big fan of anyway each year. GOPRO says they're really got an image stabilization down this year. They mean it. It's way way more stabilized. And there's a new body shape will prevent you from having to buy as many accessories to attach it to surfboards. And things like that the maverick Nick mini drone. What to know about GoPro's new cameras

"Okay so beginning October. You know what it means. Tech Tober and we're kicking it off with a review view of the Gopro so it's busy fall season of new tech year launches today. GOPRO launched not one but two action Cambridge right there was the Max also and the hero eight black jury black ones and Josh. You've been putting them to the test well. No I've been putting test. The Max doesn't quite exist yet okay so they announced it. Yes okay yeah. What can you tell us. Can you break down what we need to know about these new cameras what to to well. I'll start with the Max. The Max is a rebirth of the or a reduction of the fusion three sixty camera. They launched a while back that was more of a sort of I wouldn't say pet project but it was more experimental. It was what they're trying to do and eventually eventually they cook back down at three sixty camera into this new Max which does everything that sort of their the fusion Dade ed which is specialized in taking it takes regular three sixty video but it also allows you to take that three sixty video and use both both cameras to create a single sixteen nine video so in the end. It feels more like you're doing multi camera shoot route okay and then everything else is just basically improvements. The Max does everything that the hero black does does your black. It's a smaller so waterproof. Although I should say it looks bigger standing next to the hero seven black which have here but that's because instead of needing a separate frame they built in the prongs to attach the camera to amount so used to have a plastic frame that had always had to slide into before that it was a giant polycarbonate housing that went away with the hero five black and they made it waterproof now. It's water proof so I mean obviously after awhile water. We'll get into it but it's resistant. Yeah I mean you can go diving with it to two ten meter or so thirty feet and now it just doesn't have that extra housing piece that had framed that it needed on the outside of it's easier to sell to the memory cards to it is yeah so they did away with because they put the mounting things down there they you can just just get into the side and this is my least favourite part of the design is the store just. POPs right off but other than that you got your battery compartment where mass shooting so battery compartment and Card Slot and charging poured with their everything's right there and now now the nicer part is that they are going to have a series of mods these other frames so they did away with one frame but they're bringing back other frames frames. If you got the frame so they're trying to get trying to make bloggers happy eh so they've got these new frames the media MoD as the first one the basic ones called has a shotgun shotgun. Mike built into it a out poured and three point five millimeter Mike Jack so you can attach all the things that you want to while you're you're blogging okay. They're also going to have a light MoD which is just a really nice compact light that will go into the cold shoes on the medium odd and then also also have a small display that you can slide in and also so you can see exactly what you're shooting. You can see yourself shooting so oh it's trying to make it not only four the action enthusiasts crowd but people who are just shooting yeah just who are just using it as a video camera which I think I think building in a like the ability to just like hook it onto anything with this without having separate for it. cases kind of good for people were getting into it for the first

P. people like to price I PO lower and have that pop on the first day to instill confidence in the in the market right and so when it drops that much on the first day then it hit continues to look bad we saw other IPOs also fall it's been a tough year to be clear it was the worst start for an IPO that was more than a billion dollars third worst since two thousand eight that's correct right and you know what a smile direct was not there was another one of those top two and that was just weeks ago it's a tough tough month but also you know you have Goldman Sachs JP Morgan on this last I. P. O. U. G. Morgan on the other one as well Coleman and JP Morgan are also on we work I think everyone's looking around a little bit and saying right are we miss reading what investors want right now so let's take this back E. as you mentioned we've had a lot of high profile disappointing deals you we came into the year thinking boy this is gonna be a mother of all years for IPOs now the bankers of all brought most of these countries public they've gotten their fees but investors haven't fared so well so what is your sense that something's really changed in the market place here for these unicorns yeah there's definitely people that are more discerning right what are they looking at the looking for better bottom line figures they want more profitability something exciting Airbnb when it does go public they can say they have that he's so people are looking for companies that have higher growth so real tech companies we work has a big realistic component peloton has a big hardware components so that cell is a lot harder to say we are a staffing company were software as a service so and then also governance right you they the twenty to one voting shares are not something investors really love anymore because they don't have a say in the company as it goes forward so we also so yesterday endeavor announced that they are pulling their plans for the IPO at least for the moment do we have a sense of whether they are planning to come back at some point or is this just a re thank given the fact that people. are not actually just throwing money at anything that walks so two things about that one they did say or at least bloomers reporting has according to people familiar that they may revisit this plan maybe next year when the environment is a little better their profile I know endeavor is kind of a hot you know company and but it's not really a tech company like the other ones it's a private equity backed firm with a lot of debt and so all those debt holders will come before the equity when it comes to risk and priority so different demand here in a different type of risk of that I think will be harder to swallow yeah basically the bondholders want to get bailed out by the equity holders. come on guys you can do it. looking at it inching Bloomberg news article this morning read by Michelle Davis kind of saying calling out the fact that you know the bankers to another black eye for the bankers is sense that Wall Street is just got the whole valuation thing wrong here we'll get this so next week on Tuesday all of the V. sees will be meeting in Silicon Valley and talking about how to push forward more direct listings so you see it yet for first of all equity I revenues already down on the year for the big banks then you have all these big high profile failures frankly and then you have the V. sees meeting to try to change the model so that what is a direct listing basically the market find the price more natural leave presumably then what happens of a bigger goes on a road show and then set the price with a certain amount of investors the night before. I gotta say it's it's a tricky spot for the bankers because there are really competitive in terms of trying to get at the clients and the doors they want to give them the best bang for their Buck but clearly there over pricing these the shares the thing about overpricing shares peloton still walks away with more money went that way so it is good for the company to price that high the night before but not great for the investors that on day one was almost a billion dollars this raises question about you know the bankers duty is to the company exactly so the question is at what point is is bleed through to lower equity valuations and actually has a feedback loop that it becomes a negative for them that's the thing that bankers are hired by the company however you don't want to make the investors mad because they're the ones that are constantly trying to stuff however the a lot of investors that I've gotten very smart and gotten a lot earlier fidelity being one of them blackrock we just had it personally manager here also and their shares that they own very little bit but they own early in their mutual funds Shirley Bassey thanks so much for joining us Chanel is investment banking reporter for Bloomberg news joining us here in a Bloomberg interactive brokers to you're talking about the tough patch of IPOs here in twenty nineteen lot of high profile names a lot of capital raised but the performance on a lot of these high profile names starting you know arguably with uber and lift I really have not been there for the IPO shareholders and they've been bearing the brunt of the under performance of that part of the market right now it's down to one ninety nine one studios.

Decoding the sharp rise in gold prices

"Here's a market. We don't talk about that often the one for gold. But the price of gold is rising at its quickest pace in years. It's declined to slightly this morning but the trend still holds. So to find out more about what's going on. I rang up our markets reporter Mike, Byrd. So the gopro, she's a really interesting one hasn't risen in this way for quite a long time. And it's really been the dogs that didn't bulk, influential mulcahy's full a lot of the periods since about twenty eleven twelve gold. One of the oldest financial markets in the world is something you would expect to appreciate into Cajun's one when interest rates a low and falling and the other one that is a lot of economic and political onset since he going on. So I'm in some of the things that are happening at the moment that are making the go price rise, particularly of fulling US interest rates, which are based on declining growth expectations and declining inflation expectations and. Also, what's going on between the US and China that trade will that it's unsettling? A lot of people. And that's a major factor behind the change in the gold price.

Tell us about this latest request from the crowd, interesting. I feel like because he shows out there and commercials. And, you know, all kinds of social media posts, it's become acceptable to make dad back to the clueless, idiots and over the years, I've had my followers specifically request. Hey, can you make a video pointing out how incompetent of our? Or, you know, just basically videos mocking dads, and I've refused to do so, so instead of making that video I decided to make video pointing out how unfair we are dads and how if dad's talked about with men talks about, mom, the way women's like my dad, it would be considered completely unacceptable. So let's stop, you know, labeling an entire gender as inadequate or incompetent. What do you what do you see just people do with themselves for this, this weekend and YouTube, what sort of videos that dads? Do you think they should make? I mean, I just think we need to show dad, the way we try to show mom, right? Everybody's always trying to encourage mom saying you're doing great now. There's nothing with that. I used it when I referred making videos they're written videos, I had to make redo four times because I look at the footage and it was all red for some reason or their own sound. "Street, finally some data collection. Google just can't monetize through targeted advertising. Oh, wait. They probably can do that, too. All right. Let's talk about smartphones when it comes to you have what Samsung galaxy fold. No. You don't want to buy that cracks. What about a brand new iphone? I have one is a brand new. Yeah. Not really. Okay. There's a Chinese phone maker by the name of one. Plus they're launching two new phones. They say that can take on the heavyweights for hundreds of dollars less. The standout is the one plus seven which I Lance doesn't look like it's all that special. It's got an LED screen. It's as curved sides. But the way that you take a selfie is totally different. Okay. It has a front facing camera. There's no notch on. It doesn't have a hole punched in the Samsung galaxy S ten a brand new one but the one plus cameras springs up from the top of the phone, and then fast team at half a second pop up and has three cameras on the back. You get all the usual features unlock it with your face. Might grab you the more than retractable camera is that the price starts seven hundred bucks. And you can find it thirteen mobile here in the United States. And I have to tell you, you really don't wanna come to me for stock vice years ago. I've gopro stock, and I thought it was actually going to be pretty good, but I probably should have sold. The go pro stock years ago because it's just in the crapper right now when I saw this story, I said, yes, go pro is finally probably I don't know if they're gonna make it because DJ I just debuted their us, no action camera that actually rivals go pros. Kiro seven they both shooting for K both come with image stabilization. Both are waterproof. But here's where the action might just have this. Go pro killing feature a front facing screen that shows what the cameras recording. Yes, you never have to wonder how dangerous that video stunt was, and it's also three hundred fifty dollars compared to the four hundred dollar gopro, so you can get the Osmo action, take a selfie video. While you're holding the fifty bucks that she saved I'd be pretty nervous, if I was actually in charge of gopro right now. All right. Maybe you're into whiskey something that I've actually started drinking and looking at and studying because you don't do anything, it's kinda like all involved a couple years ago when I was in Scotland, we toward the Glenn leather factory, and it's really mazing to me, how people just work in the factory that they can waste because of just what's in the air. But anyway, Swedish based destroyed by name MAC, Myra, whiskies teaming up with Finnish tech company for kind and Microsoft, and they're going to create the world's first aid created whiskey. "Talking tech is brought to you by wicks dot com. Create and publish a stunning website all from one powerful platform, go to wicks dot com to create your very own professional website today. That's w I x dot com in stay tuned after the show to hear you can take advantage of special offer for talking tech listeners. Okay, through it looks just like a go pro it asks like one as well with the caveat that the company that makes it says the video footage of this camera is smoother and steadier did on the gopro, but sorry, DJ DJI. But we tried the new Osmo action in back to back shoot out with a gopro hero seven black, and it's not steadier the rock steady footage. In fact, is barely as smooth as the gopro. I'm Jefferson Graham with USA today. You're listening to talking tech as folks who've seen any of my videos on YouTube. No, I am a huge fan of the gopro action camera. I shoot all of my foot of walks. Videos, at least a portion of them on the go pro because I love the smooth footage. I love the wild look of flying through a town in what's called time-warp mode. So I was really intrigued when DJ told me that their new camera is actually even smoother than the gopro. Okay. But it's not. But what does it have? It has a few things that the go pro does not have it has colored. There's a color preview on the front screen, which is a godsend for bloggers who for the first time can frame the shot while speaking directly to inaction camera. Additionally, this video selfie is not distorted as the gopro can sometimes be and I like the more realistic colors on the Osmo, you can shoot video in slow motion and have the footage processed to recklessly in the camera. Love this feature. You can't do that on a gopro what it can't match. Of course is my favorite feature of the gopro hero, seven time-warp. The ability to make motion time lapses, their smooth wild and crazy while the Osmo has a hyper lapse feature it just doesn't look steady or awesome. But the selling point the deciding factor for consumers is going to be the shaky test. Can you take the Osmo out for a walk without feeling the footsteps go up and down? No could the back and forth motion on rollerblades be eliminated. No, can you strap the camera to your windshield wipers and get some pretty steady looking driving shots. Yes. So if you're a blogger who falls in love with that front preview screen, just keep your moves to a minimum while shooting for the rest of the awesome action crowd. You'll probably want to stick to the gopro. I'm Jefferson Graham, a thoughts on today's podcast. I'd love to hear from you. "Anyway, so I don't even like the color. All right. Well, I'm gonna I'm gonna send you curveball. Then ready for Kirpal. The company Chinese company called show me makes a these are the category that gopro cadres action. Cam right show me makes an excellent action Cam called the Ye Cam. And I actually prefer the Cam to the gopro. It's very similar in size and so forth. They make it's four k they make it waterproof. They sell it in the United States. It's a I think a very good camera. Very Gresley priced same prices. You'd get a go pro white that roughly two hundred bucks, you can get a four K. Ye Cam with a waterproof case cool. So they sell them on Amazon. Ye is why. They're about the same size and shape as a go. Pro I replaced my go with the Cam. And I'm I've been very happy. There's another advantage. I I worry about gopro. You know? They've been having some financial different. I think they're a company. That's I don't know if they've come back, but they've had some problems. And so I'm thinking, you know, Xiaomi is not going anywhere their really big successful Chinese company. So my be my guess that they going to be around a little longer. I really liked the Cam take a look at it. And I I don't know if anybody. Yeah. I don't know if anybody has an opinion the chat room, some people that cool eight oh, eight says, gopro, go pro has made strides. So that's good news. If they're doing better and copter who I don't know if he's used both. But he says the hero seven is better. I don't know. I have the hero fusion because I was one of the best three sixty cameras out there. And I had problems with software was kind of funky software. I felt like gopro. I dunno ignored the the product a little bit. So I didn't have the best experience on the other hand. The Cam is great and it's much less expensive. So I would say go ahead. Get the get the Cam. And then let me know K. Okay. Great. Tell you something though. Catchwords for the a leaks. What's that afford this computer? There's Amazon there's a L say what's the fourth? Is it echo? Can. Oh, you can use echo. Okay. Right. So four I said three. All right four. Yeah. Thank you for the correction. Thank you. Want everybody out and Elliot say a big no, which means by for now. "Talking tech is brought to you by wicks dot com with wicks you can use artificial design intelligence to create a stunning website right from your phone in five minutes or less. Just go to wicks dot com. That's W I X dot com and create your professional website today. Okay. I've got my list of the top ten favourite tech gadgets. Twenty eighteen who's ready? I'm Jefferson Graham with USA today. You're listening to talking tech. I quick caveat. I did not see every product released, but I did touch feel and see a lot of them. Several of the ones mentioned here. I went out and bought after I reviewed them others. I just lusted after we're gonna work our way up from ten to one. Let's start with number ten unlike smartphones, which hit ridiculous prices in two thousand eighteen many topping one thousand dollars or even higher. You gotta love witless is selling you for a portable. Rugged hard-drive. I picked up a four terabyte external drive for one hundred and fifty dollars a hundred and fifty dollars two years ago. These drives were one terabyte it best for the same price. And now I've got four times as much room number nine. I don't think you've heard of this. It's the loom cube air. It's a little continuous light tiny and it can attach to your smartphone via a magnet and give you way more people pleasing light than the lousy flash. From the phone at seventy dollars. This is a steel for night and party shots. Number eight, the Amazon fire TV edition TV's from Toshiba and best buy they are aimed at court cutters with Alexa, voice control and more visual menu. That you get from cable, and again, this is a consumer bargain. The average price is three hundred dollars for a forty two inch set on black Friday. They were giving these away for just over one hundred dollars. Wow. Number seven because no TV should be subjected to the lousy tinny sound from the teeny. Speakers of any new TV? We give the nod to the Sono speaking, it's a smaller sound bar in size. But with big sound and affordable at four hundred bucks. Number six the Facebook portal. Oh, ha ha what did you say savvy? Talking tech listeners will be scratching their heads. Right. Wait a minute. Aren't you? The guy who called this video chat device the Turkey of the year. Yes. And I also said the higher resolution. Video chat was so good. I would put the portal on my best of lists. The rest of the features blow however, number five Google pixel three APPA released three new iphones this year with slight iterations over previous models and nothing much to offer beyond a slightly bigger screen. Google upgraded its pixel phone with a superior camera that can do amazing things in the dark and even just improved basic shots in great light. I can't believe a smartphone camera can be this good number four. The apple watch series addition for again, this was another former Turkey from twenty fifteen but I got a hand it to him cooking company. They didn't give up on the watch. They refined it they made the password bugging, less Nagy. They ditch the hype about the worthless apps, they enlarge the screen into a work of colorful art in added useful health feature like e c g monitoring and call. Nine one one if you fall down and don't respond number three the pro level camera. I bought this year was the two thousand dollars Sony, a seven three also in interational of previous Sony models. But unlike apple where the newest models get more expensive. We saw many of the features of the four thousand dollars Sony. Eight nine come down to the ace seven like super fast shooting ten frames. A second low light in high resolution in a super light body. I love this camera. Number two, gopro hero seven black for years. Gopro has been trying to get the small camera. Right. Believe it or not this year. It finally got there with a four hundred dollar camera that eliminated the shakes or almost eliminated the shakes that were all over footage from surfboards bike helmets and the like end number one, no surprise to talking tech listeners as I've already flagged this, but the honor goes to Google and the home hub the video version of the Google home connected speaker the combination of the Google assistant smarter and chatty or. Than Amazon's Alexa, the YouTube library of music videos. Tv clips and food recipes the ability to watch TV via YouTube TV or listen to podcasts and get your Google features like calendar. Commutes in weather in visual form was a huge winner. Only negative and is the big one the seven inch screen is way. Too small. Here's to the fifteen or better yet twenty inch version in two thousand nineteen. Okay. Google, and that's my list. What's on your top ten? Let's talk about it on Twitter. Why match efforts and Graham you've been listening to talking tech. Please subscribe to the show on apple podcast. These faded on Stitcher, which helps more people on the show.
