"Developers have been proven many many times to be lazy and do lazy ports and lazy things with switch with with all the different things that we play. We've seen it many many times I think we all agree there that they do lazy. Stop, so stay I. Don't know if it's accurate, but stadium is firing back to say that. We have the technology. The developers are just not utilizing technology, so I don't know if that's true. I don't know if anybody else's comment on that, but that's what I'm reading. anyways, he. I don't know if that's sure either I mean it's a little up in the air, you know. He said she said My concern is that. Even if it's. you know even if it's you know they're saying they can do for K. and they're just upscaling to to make it work for now. The Games are still running pretty crappy like even not at four K.. They're running really really bad. They're lagging massive like spikes, massive issues with with frame rates massive everything so. They say they have the technology, but. Even without using technology. It's pre-. It's pretty bad. Yeah, and I've seen a big issue that people are having is Bacon play decently well for about thirty minutes, and then the game starts to go to crap. Is this. Are we talking about? Are we talking just about four K. because I mean quasimodo plays it all the time. He didn't seem to indicate the many major issues, but I know he's not playing it for but. And mainly I'm playing like through Chrome Castle, drought, which is let stadia says if you want the best end user experience plays through your Crown Castle address. Because I do find when I have played on chrome. There the at work on lunch, break or whatever I will get some latency issues by on my television with trump castle like. Really been a problem ever. Sure. I've heard that too in. Go ahead. To your point Cather with the the thirty minutes things going to crap A lot of people were complaining that their. Their chrome casts were overheating. Oh I never saw I never heard of this. I don't know why or how that. That makes any sense, but. That could be part of it is just that the chrome casts aren't as some of the crown cast neither defective, but some of them aren't aren't able to handle it. Do you remember when that because you'll send out like a brand new Croton ask you. All the founders and some of the founders were saying the one that they receive just like wasn't working. That it did now I out by a couple months in the extended to all wrong castle tras the one I own previously I placed eighty on. And Hitch. Do early on some people were having issues with one. With your stadia founder. The the issues though. I think Airbus was asking to is strictly for four K because I if quasimodo. If you're say you're you only at seven twenty p that read. Yet so if you're only playing at seven twenty P, then it's not surprising really that you're not having any issues, but if you were to try, that's something you should probably test out at some point just. I'm on I am on the Stadia. Read it right now and I. This is just my own..

"Glenn tied. It's a different conversation. Now definitely an in I. Don't think there's any disputing that. Yet stadium is going to be good at some point. We don't know how long that's going to take, but even when it finally gets good. Are Xbox and playstation going to be that much further ahead by then. Right so it's hard, it's hard to know. At, this point. Africa's? He brought up project x cloud earlier. Do a explain a little bit about that, but that is I actually just recently signed up for the Beta. Hopefully. Hopefully. They let me in, but. I mean that's essentially Google stadium out but I mean it comes packaged with. What, what Keller said was possibly the entire xbox for the entire Microsoft lineup. Of Games. but yeah, it just didn't comparisons. From the Free Beta and the payback of. Cloud and Stadia currently the Latin, see issues or about the same bought the X. Cloud seat while one. You get way more games with an to. it seems to be. A better at lower Internet packages. So I think they were saying steady is like you know if you have a thirty five mega mega down. You'll be fine. You Stream fourcade. That didn't really end up that way. And then as far as detests for ex cloud. They were pretty low like you. You'd get the same Latin in the same quality at like a fifteen twenty twenty gigabit down, so they were running better at the lower speeds. With better, Games section rig the game lineup in a bunch of other stuff, so just quit comparisons there kind of slaughtering stadia if they released a free open Beta. That would be a shit show, yeah! And I think. From the research I was doing earlier I think. X. Cloud is going to have a paid subscription similar to stadium and I and I think it might actually even be a little bit more expensive than stadia at..

"Well we could compare it to. Ex- cloud, which is in Beta close Beta. which will include all of the game pass? Games, which is well over one hundred games. No questions asked. Is. Actually include. xbox is entire library. I don't even think it's just game pass. Certainly, it certainly could be that as well. That's I mean compared to cloud at all. It doesn't look great for stadia but. It's. It's a good start. Again! Spent around for what feels like forever. I mean twenty eight feels like xbox burn around. We're a stadium keynote. Yes, but it feels like. My I guess my concern. Is You know you are paying a like? You said you're paying seven dollars or whatever thirteen dollars for a beta. That has fifty games. is pretty savvy. If it was a Beta that two hundred games that feel better, but. The fact that X. Cloud meanwhile closed. Beta is free. Fifty Games doesn't sound like a whole lot of forty or whatever it is. At any I. I agree Google should have gone the closed Beta roofers. And the guy is yeah for everybody on on nine to five Google Dot com, and that is a go to source for everything Google. And that was the thing that it was like you really promoted this to us, and but it feels like we're just testing out a base level of the platform now and but. Now you didn't tell us this until after gave you like two hundred and fifty dollars. So it's a bit misleading for sure. Under present. I am not as I have a lot of criticisms of Google Stadia that. We haven't hit the subject for me yet. The number of games isn't the. issue. I'm a big. Big Believer big big advocate for VR gaming, which is another controversial topic because a lot of people think that's not going to Survive or or prosper as as you know, despite I think it will, but there are people that think it won't end and part of the issue with them was that it was a lot of Tech Demos. A lot of limited games still is to a degree. I guess the differentiator though for for VR it's. It's a mind blowing. In my opinion, it's a mind blowing experience. It's a completely different way to experience games. My issue with Stadia, Is, and I think I mean I. Think Quasimodo's basically agreed with us on this one. Is that roll out was just terrible like. I look at something like epic Games who are competing with steam to which like so, society is going up against xbox as a very established market EPA gains going up against seem to try to become a game. What do they call those things? He gained love, game, launcher, or platform. Whatever you launch your games through in buyer games through. A client yes, or so EPA. Games is doing it in a way where they're offering free games left right and center. They're doing all these crazy promotions. I see it all the time like an ad. Get this game for free, and then I launch of EPA Games game for free..

"Take two CEO Strauss Zelenik says. Google stadium over promised on its abilities. Strauss Zelic is the CEO of take two, and he's a very smart guy. When it comes to the video game business, he's the boss of Rockstar and gearbox, which has released games like grand theft auto and borderlands, both very successful franchises, so it's pretty safe to get behind his big bets. Take. Two did bet on Stadia. By bringing bread dead redemption to to the platform, but Zelenik seems less enthused about Google Stadia today. Steve Watts reported on xanax stadium thoughts for Gamespot writing. Take two CEO. Strauss zanuck says that Google stadium over promised on its -nology, and didn't seem to expand the market like it had hoped in a talk at the Bernstein Annual Strategic Decisions Conference. Zone explained why the company had supported the release of streaming, and he doesn't sound positive on the platform so far. Streaming technology is upon us, he said the launch of stadium has been slow I think there was some over promising on what the technology could deliver and some consumer disappointment as a result. Stadia launched late last year, but about a month ago, it offered users the opportunity to sign up for a free trial of the service. If you signed up for that trial like I did when it became available, then it's about to run out. I have a reminder in my phone set to go off in about five days to remind me to cancel it or rather you know, make the decision regarding whether or not I want to cancel it. And I think I do. I was an weirdly am to a certain degree, still excited about stadium, but it all really comes down to the fact that while having the free trial, I really haven't used the service at all I have plenty of games to play on other platforms, and even though I really like the idea of playing PC games in bed on my laptop, all the Games that are available on stadium ended up being ones. I can plan other ways. There are still games being developed for stadium. which is what I am most interested in. Shannon Stud still left Sony Santa Monica and the God of war team to make something for Google Stadium and I am very excited to find out what that is. But. I am sure it's years away. Zelic seemed to imply in the Bernstein annual strategic decisions conference that take to didn't have any plans for continued stadia support at least nothing in the immediate future. That certainly doesn't mean it's dropping. Stadia or anything probably just means that if any take two games, do come to stadia. They will probably just come well after launching on the typical console and PC platforms. I I still Kinda Rooting for stadium I still like it conceptually, but Xanax lack of confidence doesn't really bode well for its long-term, future? Cate.
Google Stadia gaming platform introduces bandwidth controls
"Also making change stadia pros default stream resolution in an effort to manage bandwidth similar to efforts of netflix Disney and Sony Interactive Entertainment According to Stadium Vice President and general manager Phil Harrison. So essentially what they're doing is doing the default resolution down to ten eighty P instead of four K. This is not surprising. We were just talking about how we're all experiencing Internet woes right now kind of across the board and so does make a service like stadium. Kinda feel like a feels like stadium was never designed for this but it's interesting that they're finally adding this. I'm actually surprised it took this long. Because it was a big thing that they were talking about making sure that there was going to be a base stadia available. And now it's already you know midway through April and this came out in November of last
Samsung's Galaxy S20 lineup packs better cameras, battery life and built-in 5G
"Samsung's doesn't have a monopoly of five G.. Radio's no finds out. They're going to have a flagship the they just put out that. I watched the video. You Know Marcus Brownlee has is the TAB use I like. His videos did a review of that the ultra version so cool ridiculous eighteen hundred dollars. But my God's mad that's under an eight megapixel cameras now. He's nutty. What does that even read a hundred times? Obstacles to 'em writes in and says with the announcement that Microsoft Samsung are quote just beginning their partner their gaming partnership. Where do you think we could end up in the next few years X.? Cloud being installed on every new Samsung phone in TV would would be a huge moves for excessive millions of new potential customers according to the Tister Status Santa Statistics hitter. I've never heard of that The same thing held almost nineteen percent global market share in the smartphone market in q four. That's impressive when you consider how fragmented the ANDROID world is. There's so many there's so many options but yeah I mean I have a galaxy S. ten and I feel like I'm presuming. Samsung is the biggest player in Agile. Yeah that's that that would be my assumption check on that I mean. Maybe it's maybe it's wall way or something you know the US in the US. At least I would Samsung's gotta be that'd be my assumption but maybe there are like there might be some other being fracture and you're wrong because he was like look into it for us like cheaper prices or something and according attack. Samsung is the largest manufacturer with over twenty percent of the market this xbox in the hands of more potential players than playstation now access on Sony smartphones phones and televisions could is this the beginning of strategic mismatch for playstation. What other elements of this partnership? Do you think are possible. And do we think that this is a move for for Microsoft a hedge against stadia integration into into Google Pixel devices and Android more broadly. Thanks and have a great Wednesday. I mean I think it would. It would be to Samsung's advantage advantage to say. Hey and Samsung. Phones are the only place to GATT Microsoft cloud or at least the premium version of the experience. Yes if you have. I'm an xbox game. I'm an iphone Guy and I'm an xbox consoles. I slightly prefer the xbox and if Samsung would just say hey. We're the only company with the only phone that you can get premium excellent experience. I mean I wouldn't. I wouldn't do it. I would never have an android phone but I I would. I would like maybe I'll be at least on the fence about it. That would be. I think the idea of every Samsung device coming preinstalled with xbox thanks cloud right. I think that'd be a huge win and even in a month question here. He's referencing competition against playstation playstation. Now I think they're like as far as competition in this base base. I think playstation now is barely a factor. I think could be a factor in the future if he's not continue continues to improve and continues to android phone manufacturers Samsung the way behind why behind arms made their names. I don't know Xiaomi all PO and companies did you really think about because it because this is outside of the. US can you do it just by the US. Wild Wide World Wide Ham logic. I've never even heard of L. G.. Motorola Rollo Sony's down there. I mean Samsung is like far too. Why that same forty three point six percent of the android space and that does make sense it would be like ninety percent of the once you factor in the IPHONE? iphones a good chunk of them. Okay yeah totally. Three percent of the android market equals like ninety percent of the phone market overall role. Right yeah and so with that idea in mind just running away with it makes complete sense. What this partnership is out here? Did for exclusively though because even yeah like even though Samsung is the number one player ninety percent of the overall market is not enough. Right you want to be an old. Of course yeah. I don't think like I don't think this article Michael Mentions exclusivity anywhere I didn't I didn't get a hint of any anything pointing toward the idea that they're going to be exclusive but the idea that they could have a deal where you are getting Samsung devices like Samsung. TV's amount at Biltrite as the TV. That's yeah that's compelling right there and they they won't be exclusive but they can say this is with us. If you have a Samsung device this will offer the best experience. Yeah I think that I think that messaging for them go a long way and I think that is what makes this partnership make complete sense But yeah as far as like them communing with. Let's see. Is this beginning. Is this the beginning of strategic mismatch for playstation. I think it's already been kind of a strategic mismatch when the GECKO playstation. Now didn't necessarily have. What does that mean a strategic mismatch for playstation? I think I think we aim on is getting at. Is the idea that this would but then when you look at the numbers compared to say Sony phones and Sony. TV's like Samsung Wars. Those numbers is I think. That's why am I getting that but I think that's uh I think that's a problem. Because he is the thing so stadia has a natural partner with android and more specifically Pixel Pixel phones right. Yes you understand why. That's all kind of under one roof. Yeah Microsoft doesn't have any presence in the phone mark any anymore anymore. They tried and they failed now. They're just out said where we will support android now. So it makes sense for them to Partner with the number one player in the Android Loyd market Sony has a natural partner in its consumer electronics division. But like they but that's small time. Yeah that's who has a Sony phone. WHO has a Sony? TV Not that many people. Yeah that's the thing they need to. They might need to find Nick's donal partner and that's why I think like this is less than competition with Sony. Lean more in competition with stadia. If anything right like stadium having like Google Google Pixel being a thing not nearly as big of a thing as Samsung with with android right and Google stadia kind of having a certain amount of mindshare with the streaming space. I think that's where the competition is at. Even though it seems things warm more by the day stadium kind of eating their lunch right. They're kind of tripping over their own their own feet with each passing passing kind of decision in new story. We see about stadia not working or making bad decisions or doing. Ama's that don't tend to work out well for them like project. X Cloud seems to be doing all the right things. And you know there's even another news story coming up about another streaming beaming service that you know there this this space currently is kind of messy and it's kind of fun to watch because we're seeing people kinda climb over each other and try try to become at that number one spot Whether it is in like mindshare or like even in the partnerships and actually getting the absolute on whatever devices you have whether you like it or not so far. It seems like X. Cloud and I'd say probably INVIDIA G. Force are kind of Invidia G. for surprisingly are kind of like the two front runners for what services are going to end up successful in this thing but even then like I could see I could see a feature where like nobody. Nobody comes out on top because this str- streetlight video game streaming is still hasn't become as many thing yet. You know what I mean. You know. It's it's going to be enough. Another iteration of the platform was you know. There's no one clear I mean. Seventy is kind of a clear winner right now but Mike still really in the game. Nintendo's obviously a very Bigger deal than the newsletter three-horse three very healthy horses in that in that race. Maybe maybe Sony need to give Tim Cook a call. Do an exclusive collusive Team Up. Hey the best way to get the best way to get an exclusive playstation experience playstation streaming is on the iphone really think about it apple and Microsoft all rivals. They can't work together. I don't take Samsung and apple arrivals. They can't work together. Sony Oni and apple though they don't have any particular beef. Maybe they team up for this. I'm not crazy. There are Sony phones right. Yes see they run android. Yes the Sony. Only have a tiny daily advertiser are some of the most beautiful phones. Go from every time I see the new Soni you need the experience I still have. Those new ones are those. The industrial design on Sunday finds gorgeous. Yeah they they have always run like shit. Yeah that's the problem. Suli run shit that being said the latest one that came out which I can't remember the model number now but like that phone Enforce it doesn't work for sprint. Otherwise they'd be the phone I used. It's the prettiest screen of ever seen on a phone gorgeous. Yeah they're still plugging away but not the playoffs does not work with sprint. So that's the point. They they need they need to either. Just put it out there equally for. Everyone say he will support all devices or they need or they need a partner. This thing with monks outta pondering Samsung Apple might be their best bet. I could see it number two jeff. Kelly is it producing e-3 coliseum. Good job kid and then finally the Tesla's cyber truck both of you have a seat. You know what's funny. I don't really think it's that bad looking of a car. It just happens to be incredibly different than what we're used to So different doesn't always have to mean bad but I admit it's way different than expected. Google Stadia media seems to not be ready a reference back to my section in this episode of Bow. Google Stadia as to why I know people think it's not ready yet. It's exciting still. And I think everyone one kind of gets too into the weeds about The technicalities behind the system and what not to forget that. I mean we're GONNA one day be able to do this and do it. Well who's John Leger. I know when the video I went out. We accidentally had ledger there instead of John. Legere we're trying to remember exactly how to pronounce it and High Mania. Were kind of going back and forth saying it's pronounced actually ledger which I commented on in the comments but it's spelled Luxair which is why kept saying but in reality his name. Is John Ledger. So we were just having some fun with that but we forgot to change That particular word in the Title I also love the response wants to that one He owned mobile dumb blonde. Go had actually a lot of good things to say about all of the things that were happening. Fifty Percent Veterans Discount Netflix on US unlimited data monthly bill is less than a hundred dollars equals. I can't beat T. Mobile's perks with the stick. Thanks John I agree with that. Actually I mean the bills are supposed to be exactly what you expect them to be like. You're told what the price is. And that's what you get despite all of the little nefarious fees that were. They were once called that John Leger actually said okay. We're going to stop doing that. Mostly we But overall it's nice to know exactly how much are going to pay every month and that's what most people need do like this more. Yep We're going to do our best to and again and let me know what you think about this. Formatting the comments this is the way that we want to make the pug now weekly moving forward. It's a show. And if you're on the audio side of things you're still going to enjoy Roy some conversational pieces from time to time but this is the weekly show. Hopefully you don't mind hanging.
Do You Need to Be a Gadget Freak to Enjoy Google Stadia?
"Google Stadium finally came in and I want to talk a little bit about it some more because last week we had a great conversation with David even a mel and he gave a lot of good insight into stadium because he's had it for quite a while but now that I have had mine I just wanted to give some of my thoughts and just some musings that I've been having over the last few days while I've been enjoying it and yes I do. Enjoy it all right so Google stadium you might have seen a tweet Coming from my account saying that I probably would have been more excited about if I was experiencing it for the first time At the same time as everybody else after all a lot of people were excited about the concept and then the reviews started to come out and they were a little bit less than stellar. People like David were saying that it is actually a fun thing to have As long as you have either. No data caps or you have really good Internet. I'm here to actually confirm I'm all of that. So I actually have the ultra. That comes with the premier bundle that I bought a set up right now and over on the corner just says that you can connect your stadia controller and when you do these particular inputs in my case. It's ex left Y.. Up then loops actually have to turn on the controller. I and you feel a very obvious the obvious vibration coming from it. So it's on X.. Left why up and you feel vibration. Each time ends once you have that it connects via Wifi to the crown cast and then stadium is ready to go now. This experience that you're seeing right here is or rather for the audio listeners. Out Out there. This experience of having the Crown Cast Ultra and the stadium controller. This is the console experience. It's the it's the most analogous to a console experience from Google stadiums ecosystem. After all you have something connected to a TV and you're only able to use specific controllers with the crown cast ultra so so the state controller is to chrome cast. Ultra the way that A. ps four dual shock controller is to the PS four. So that makes sense to me and that's fine and I did also tweet out that my first experience. The stadium was not that great because I started to see input lag on games. That really shouldn't have any like a shooter for example destiny to which is a game that you can get for free once once you get stadium pro but as I read up on other people's experiences I started to hear more of that controllers are definitely the way to go and it makes sense in a way because the state controller is connecting to the stadia servers via Wi fi so it has an independent connection that we make sure that latency is as low as possible. Now there's a game that I've been wanting to play. I actually really liked the NBA to suitcase areas. And I was like you know what there's a black Friday sale You use your phone to take a look at what games are available and there was a sale on it for thirty dollars. I went in and got it. So that's kind of the layer player that is interesting about Google Stadium. Requires you to use the smartphone in order to access the Games And you have to use in this case just all of the pixels and there are no other phones that are available. Oh before unless it's rooted but that's a whole different story so I started playing NBA Two K.. Twenty a lot with the Google stadium especially on the comcast ultra and as it turns out my Internet connection here at the House is actually really good. Because I've been able to play hours of NBA to twenty. I don't even know how much data I've been using with it But that I've been able to play a bunch of it without any problems and honestly the quality has been really good. I haven't noticed really anything Any drops in the quality. Not of the game And my input lag has been pretty much null with the controller. I've been having a good time just casually playing this basketball game and then I started playing on my pixel xl and with the Wifi. That I have here in the house which is apparently working perfectly four stadia. I had a really good time on there and I realized there's a couple of things that I feel. Some of us are forgetting when it comes to Google's ecosystem you're basically signing up to be an early adopter and at its worst it's also used signing up to be you betta Tester Google stadiums not perfect. But it's definitely sort of the realization of what could become our future in gaming Google's Google's trying to do what they did was search what they did with android and what they did with other services in their camp and that's democratized and make it available for more people and even though I had that face on when I first got stadium because I was expecting the experience to be subpar the way that everybody else has been saying. It is I had the Hamam when I was basically doing something like this. Take a look at this picture. This is what we all want. This is what tag is supposed to be. You're supposed to have a smartphone with a great camera. That's the Pixel I have connected to a really fun NAS. Thou- GIC forward gaming controller in the eight bid do s and thirty pro plus. It has the phone connected to it via Bluetooth Youth and I'm using that in order to play NBA Two K.. Twenty over my really good Wifi and then I'm listening to the audio through you know me I love these products. The truly wireless ear buds in this case the driver elite seventy five t this entire set up right here is what being gadget lover is all about and honestly I'm very thankful that this even exists and it's only going to go up from here and dig. A lot of people have been trying to say the same sentiment in a lot of different ways the fact that in order to really enjoy stadia. Ada You probably have to have a lot of prior knowledge about tech in general. You have to be a gadget freak and you have to know that your Internet is already good and having stadia and seeing the sub par performance or the input lag a mix. It seem like everyone has to re evaluate. Just how good their setup and then after that well you have your local games TMZ on your PC. Which I definitely do? And if I don't have a good Internet connection at least I can play other stuff actually really enjoyed that. That is a thing. It's not perfect. But wow is this not the realization Asian of everything that we've been hoping technical bridge over time you can really enjoy a lot of stuff right now. All at once and stadium is just another layer all of that. So that's something that I'm really grateful for honestly like it was really fun to play. NBA Touquet Twenty. And I didn't have any problems with stadium so far. Let's see let's see what happens with that as a travel with stadia and and try it on other WIFI
Google Responds to Stadia 4K Complaints
"Google responds after stadium owners accused of breaking promises over game. Performance in a lot of people have been talking about this this week so Google has issued a statement after it was accused of breaking promises over the performance of Stadia Games last week website. Nine to five google accused Google Google of lying about the performance of Stadi- games effort emerged key titles were not running in four k resolution and sixty frames per second. The reality of Stadia is an issue for many owners of the streaming tech because it contradicts statements made by Google and its executives in the run-up to release it because Google is locking up to four K.. Resolution behind nine thousand nine stadia pro subscription in promoting stadia google staffs said arm stage that it's GP has more power than xbox one x and P for pro combined and in a tweet posted in October CD media chief Phil Harrison said quote. All Games at launch support for K.. We designed stadium to enable four K.. Sixty with appropriate TV at bandwidth and we want all games aims to play four K.. Sixty but sometimes artistic reasons games at four K thirty so sadie always streams at four K. Sixty two X encode said Harrison but the a senior version of destiny to for example renders at a native ten eighty P and is an upscale to improve quality but never reaches four K.. Red Dead Redemption Two stadiums. Most High I profile port also doesn't play in true four K.. As digital foundry revealed redemption to renders at ten eighty P or fourteen forty depending on what data rate you're using and is then upscale to four K.. On a Chrome Cast Ultra essentially the stadiums four K.. Moat is actually processing fewer pixels than on its biggest port. So what the heck is going going on Google said in a response that it gives developers the freedom to set the performance of their city imports as they see it or excuse me as they see fit but Google said it expects performance to improve improve. Here is the statement stadia streams at four K. in sixty and that includes all aspects of our graphics pipeline from game to screen GPU encoder and Chrome Castle. Tre out all out putting four K.. To Four K.. TV's with the appropriate Internet connection developers making CD Games card to deliver the best streaming experience for everyone like you see on all platforms. This includes a variety of techniques achieved the best overall quality we give developers the freedom of how to achieve the best image quality and frame rate on stadium and we are impressed with what they have been able to achieve for day one we expect developers can and in most cases will continue to improve their games on stadia and because stadium lives in our data centers developers are able to innovate quickly while delivering offering even better experiences directly to you with the game patches or downloads and statement. What appears happened? Here is a disconnect between the promise of CD abides marketers and the the reality of its port by developers. What is clear is that the chrome cast ultra is out putting a true four K.? Signal but Google Stadia staff even know that Rockstar was rendering rendering red dead redemption to internally at fourteen forty p question mark either way. This situation is not a good look for Google and really you'd expect more from the Alexa Phil Harrison. Who should have done his homework before promising? ALL GAMES AT LAUNCH SUPPORT FOUR K. Tesla unveils futuristic-looking electric ute called the 'Cybertruck'
"This week. There were a few really big news stories in the one that literally just happens like a day or two ago was the announcement of the Tesla Cyber Truck. Now we do know a couple of people who were there at the unveiling advancing and look forward to some of the content from David. Kogan Dan Lager and also Michael Fisher also known as Mr Mobile aside from just a look of the cyber truck itself It's also bulletproof which is really interesting. "Kind of collecting the data that would feed these programs in high quality that makes them viable. Yeah because like to actually be out to create one of these of recreations doesn't seem to be as far as I know a really so it's not an easy technical thing you'd have to have like a body of data for movements and how these people would speak the voice recording lots of different ways and to build up like a new digital version of them doing new things. You have to happen like a huge trainings. Dated the allows you to really have enough information about them to make them do something that they've never done before. Yeah exactly but like I said. I think that's where we're kind of getting too late. It's not just the finished product writing creating a movie creates loads of that collateral so there will be loads hundreds and thousands of hours of James Dean on film not necessarily from finished products productions but part of in Hollywood archives that they can draw on his estate probably has access to and what we're making here is essentially a James Dean deep. Fake if you like writ large in in a big budget production that's essentially what's happening here and it will be interesting to see if this does become a the industry for the film business if studio stark putting together catalogs or company. Start putting terrific catalog. So you can buy the James Dean the deep fake set and then put James Dean in a film you're one or the Bette Davis or the Marilyn Monroe you just pay the fee to the company that's dot got them and then you can put them in your film. I wouldn't honestly wouldn't be surprised to see this happening with living actors right. For example we saw Samuel Jackson and captain marvel being digitally de aged. He used to say that while he still alive he might just be like you know what I didn't want to spend the time to star in that film but I'd like the money so I'm GonNa License. My image rights and voice writes. This may be the voice over myself but you can have my image rights to what I looked like as Chiro and do whatever you want them coming at the end and just do the voice Captain America decoding. The shameful. The Actors Union has been lobbying all states to implement protections for the use of image rights celebrities after they die saying that there should be a real concern unfort- living and living actors ability to be rehired and used. Do we really think that this is going to become a free for all. Are we going to see a loaded dead celebrities being the lead roles in major films. I think I think part of it will depend on like how audiences react to it. I mean I think like economically speaking kind of trend speaking like there's no reason why it shouldn't be like it's going to get cheaper and cheaper and cheaper and easier to do this kind of thing right now is quite labor intensive process. You have to come visit stuff together and it's not really automated in the sense that requires a skilled people equipped for the competing power. But we're GONNA see Algorithms that make this quicker and make simple basically to do it like we've seen deep fakes right the idiot to make. But that doesn't mean that anyone wants to see the film but exactly and that's why I'm that's that's where I think it will rest. Audiences accept accept this and for me. There's also the element of when you're okay. Fine if you're buying living actors right so people have died recently. But if you're a company that just waiting to use people with rights and image once this of like copyright seventy year fifty whatever is more state has expired. Then there's also that sort of living. Ah Coach would like to do a lot of people know. Now they're all this subset of people that know people that would have been born seven years ago or been famous seventy years ago and Anez that limits appeal in some way. Yeah quite possibly maybe that kind of puts it kind of self limiting thing on it but then I guess if you will you know. We've we've seen old franchises being revived lately or kind of being remade or be booted and he can kind of see characters being brought back to life in that sense. Maybe for existing franchises rather than for new things like James Dean thing. Yeah they're seemingly a load of original ideas leptons that's why we have lots of franchises and sequels and remakes. And God knows what's so it makes sense to a degree and if you push this to its limit you could imagine that you might have to pick any two big stars of of the moment of w had any names like very good offer. Will Smith Damon Emma Stone Okay. You're you're three. And they go all right. So the three of them in seventy years time plus because they have to they have to pass away. I starring in a remake of. I've Lord knows what right you could just pick a mix anyone you want. Chuck him into this massive vengeance mess and have this bizarre beyond the grave. We've Hollywood blockbuster from a time when the worst stars who are truly global. So you're right matt going back seventy years from now that weren't that many big global cinema stars but seventy years from now people that die in the next few years over the coming decades seventeen thousand nine hundred years who knows we might all be living on the news and there'll be a lot more to choose from on that. No I'm just wondering obviously the reason why you're looking at James Dean or all these all these old stars because there's a lot of footage back then you're very Well recorded people nowadays even politicians. You know other people are video lot. Is it possible that we'd see Barack Obama and a film Richard Nixon and film presumably. There's nothing inherently limits you to just choosing actors putting them in films. You can have historical recreations of people with the actual will people people's voices in people's faces in them. Can You could have Frost Nixon with Frost Nixon or something a bit more exciting than that Frost Nixon Move Actual Frost Nixon. The problem is didn't they already have that with the actual frost mix. Yes they did actually watches a bonus feature on the of Frost Nixon which I have a home. If you'd I'd like to borrow it. That sounds great. Go you can live your dream right now. We had a couple of really really good podcast. UK with your views on bring celebrities back from the dead to star. In Hollywood blockbusters we love to hear from you. And we did hear from a couple of you over the past week and we very much appreciate it so Harley wrote him with the point about our discussion on Labor's proposal for nationalizing the UK's broadband infrastructure which the party says we'll be paid for by taxing big corporations during our a discussion. I argued that taxing corporations to pay for a nationalized broadband service was a bit like taxing broach uses to drive on motorways. Turns out as is often the case I was completely wrong. Harley explains that the UK has had a road tax since one thousand nine hundred thirty seven in fact he goes on to explain that road maintenance in the UK is taken from General Federal Taxation. So everyone pays for the upkeep of the roads of they drive on them on not he goes on and I quote in terms of the analogy. You make by you humans me. I think he means him. It might be interesting to mention that this is more like the system that existed in the UK from around nine hundred free to nine hundred thirty seven when vehicles charge charge so-called carriage duty depending on their VIC. Wait the idea being that. The heavy the vicar. Who would be responsible that they'd be wrote damage? He goes on. I suppose companies such as Google facebook would countless heavy vehicles since they take up a lot of bandwidth on the Internet infrastructure. I wonder if Labor idea would be implemented for more than thirty seven years equivalent rotation system existed a fundamental exercise. And I apologize for being incompetent. We had one more email this week. Yeah this one is also about brewer and say Reno right tend to. She lives in Australia and he says the National Broadband Network Rollout. There has been a nightmare. Poor installation to less than impressive speeds say religion either. Were planning to five premises model but live switched out for mixed Madhu when the liberal National Coalition Party took over so now they've got fiber and then the last mile is kind of copper which she points out is like putting a high-speed train behind a regular train so self defeating in a way but she will say says that's not what she's actually in about say. Last week we had a discussion about whether or not onions should be eaten raw. I maintain that quite local onion although probably not how same night worrying maybe a little bit of red onion spring onions a fine but not a normal I find if you doused them in cold water it helps take the edge off of it. Why just onion or just an onion? Please continue anyway so she. She writes into video a former ozzy. Prime Minister Tiny Abbot. who once eight unpeeled rule onion skin on and we looked at the video earlier? And it's worth watching there. We go off. Everyone now runs to video of someone easing raw onion skin on. What's the weirdest thing you've ever eaten raw post wide K.? Didn't know please don't but do podcast. At what can we love me with that preferably not that or any of your viewpoints on any of the stories that we discussed this week or anything. That's on your mind. We really do love getting your emails Post Wide Dot Co dot. UK and one final thing. Please leave reverse on jeans or apple podcasts or wherever you happen to listen to it. It's a really good way of making sure that more people can listen to my ignorance about Britain's Road Taxation Scheme and I'm it's lovely facts about seagulls so do leave his review preferably five thousand sales of Nice things if you think that justified and we'll see you again next week that's very much bye. Bye Bye.

"Russia's made attempts to regulate it right so you now have to have a license to go out and and sell mammoth tusks and the people that we spoke to in the region that with trying to run legitimate businesses so that this huge sort of wild west West Cowboy operation occurring just outside of the law was really problematic because everyone sorta trying to undercut everyone else and get around the brace slow laborious process of regulation relation that the Russian authorities is introduced which is introducing another kind of tension exactly so hostesses regulated. It's regulated in a bit of an odd way. Sometimes I quite proactive sometimes they. They're a little bit hands off so we spoke to one tax collector and dealer. They've been saying all. I had a whole load of touch and I was trying to export them to Hong Kong. And they've been in this process for a year and a half and the problem is the law of legal hunters that I probably can't get rid of my tasks and so what people in China they're trying to buy this ivory and traders are trying to buy these raw talks. They're going to people that are mining this ivory illegally. So you can still get an in legal. Mammoth amount of trade that don't have licenses and that's undercutting the market for the real mammoth rights trade. So there's there's this whole problem are actually the mammoth Tusk. Straight itself is on slightly a shaky ground. People are saying is even worth my money being in this market. If I'm going to get undercut by people that are gonNA grab it and sell it in any way weird sentence for it was legal and then people never illegal way to do it and it's always kind of layers of responsibility and looming over. This whole story is the elephant in the room. If you like is the climate crisis this is the only reason that this try this. Boom Industry has occurred is because of the warming planet. This vast area that is ordinarily permanently frozen is defrosting. Yeah exactly and it's really fascinating because obviously what has made ivory such a price thing is because it is from elephants since it's not found everywhere it's a really rare commodity early. She's been seen as Iraq multi but actually as all of these tests. We're starting to find out that. Actually there's a whole bunch shove ivory there if only we dig it up but actually it's only there because of global warming essentially. I'm still not over ten million mammoths that seems like so many that so many members and the problem is in China. Actually the demand for ivory looks like is going down to a recent survey. I think I remember. It was actually is in September but this year and IT survey two thousand people in China and fifty seven percent said they would not buy ivory ivory of any kind so actually there's a sense perhaps the the value of ivory might drop in an rather than say switch. Mammoth ivory people who like if I've R- is not good an Irish been outlawed. It has this. He's got a big effect. That people are like well. Maybe just don't ivory a tool and while there are still a phenomenal number of elephants being slaughtered for the illegal ivory trade this this sudden flood of mammoth ivory into the market at a time when consumer demand for it in China seems to be fooling and across Asia seems to be falling could create a situation. There's just so much of the stuff that the market value four so low. The the risk and effort required to illegally kill an elephant in Africa doesn't way up against the potential profit at the end of it and economics could end up being the thing that saves elephants. Yeah it's kind of weird but that that's the kind of sense that maybe we flood the market with mammoth. Every kind of this new kind of ethical source of ivory maybe that reduced the demand for elephant ivory other people say well. It's not enough to rely on economics. We need to be doing more to practically protect elephants. Very interesting people are saying well. Maybe if you've always got supply of library they'll always be some poaching. What we need to say is no ivory tool is allowed? I think New York is banned. Mammoth Ivory and India has banned mammoth ivory but it's not very uncommon for mammoth ivory too bad but saying well actually what we encourage ivory trade in different paces and then people might find other sources of it so it's very opinions are very divided on this. It's really fascinating story written by wide. Sabrina vice which you can find on the website with loads more color and detail on fascinating facts. Why don't you care? I'm will include that one in the show notes along with all the stories that we talk about on the podcast this week and please do get in touch podcast. Why don't cut at UK with your thoughts on mammoths? If you have any I read the ivory trade and perhaps more pertinently Google Stadia have used subscribe to the service. Have you been playing the home out. And about let us know your thoughts on it and how it might disrupt the future of the Games industry from one dead thing to another. There's a segue that works mammoths mammoths to celebrities Amit. That's right yeah you might remember a couple of weeks ago The actor James Dean was back in the headlines when production company in the states announced that he had been cost the lead in an upcoming film. Of course James Being James has been dead for sixty four years and the production company magic city films said they would be bringing him back to life digitally using an existing photos and videos from films he paid and while alive. This is for a Vietnamese Wolfram. Could Finding Jack. This isn't new but it certainly an escalation of an small-time bringing celebrities back from the dead. Yeah this has been going on for a little while lyles say You might remember broke. One had actor who had died in the nineteen th kind of recall reprising his role in the Star Wars spinoff film in Philip Seymour Hoffman and poor curve. Both been kind of brought back to life to finish off films that they just died during the production of the same thing with Carrie Fisher as well he is that has been digitally recreated to continue. Her style was wrong. Even after. But that was the greatest of respect was fiddling around the edges. It was finishing off projects. That couldn't be finished tragic circumstances. This is Sixty four years after someone died creating a whole new film with them in it. Yeah this is the next step level above as as you can imagine real current living his own particularly impressed by this Chris Evans From Captain America from the big breakfast could it shameful to terrible British ninety s cultural reference. People probably won't get brand and this is opening up a whole new industry within the film industry of dead celebrity rights negotiation. That's why it's really fascinating. So one of our writers Aleksey Kinda looked into. WHO's behind this this this James Dean thing and and is that more of this an founder? Yes there was. There's a company called worldwide exile which is a licensing company an IP licensing company. He was basically signing up the right kind of dead celebrities dead actors that sports people musicians on mass and they've got four hundred one four hundred of these deceased stars. He's today and the rights to you. They're trying to leverage to make money so this is an interesting form of ambulance chasing perhaps. Yeah Yeah Ambulance Chasing Chasing Espace. Well yes I suppose so and not even that because very often these celebrities that died some time ago and James Dean is the the first example of some of the passed away. Many decades ago being brought to life and Lord the rights that worldwide X. Our own for people who'd died many decades ago and that they've managed to negotiate with their estate that their image can be used in future feature productions. Yes so they've got a lot of people from the server you've famous in the fifties and sixties like Bette Davis Betty paid but reynolds in good Bergman. Those kinds of people signed up and that they're trying to use them in new reproductions. Do we have much of a sense of what the motivation for. This would be because gas is a slight attraction. That if your reproducing these acting too you can get them to do whatever you want to do. But also there's lots of really good alive actors out there so is it just about the novelty of bringing someone back. They are so tickets. I think in this case it's yes. It's kind of about the novelty of being able to call someone because it's kind of a new thing right now in Sweden it before so that kind of has an attraction in itself I think long term you could see it becoming cheaper. He put an icy paying like a big star right. You know this kind of stuff is only gonNA get cheaper whereas Hollywood analyst is only going to get more expensive so you can do a deal with some of the state then then that could be cheaper so we just talked about the ethics and legality around digging up mammoths and reusing their tusks. The surely there's gotta be some laws or something that is about people's images and using they're using a famous person in a film as a lead actor. What's interesting about this James Dean cases? It's actually is legal and they've actually gone to the estate got permission but they weren't necessarily be the case very seen so in the US. Does this go right to publicity. Which means that? After a person's death they made their state maintains that kind of image rights and voice and likeness rights for a number of view California. That's up to seventy years Indiana's fifty years. It kind of varies depending on the state but once that seventy year period have long expires. Then it's basically a free. I like when the copyright expires on a book. And anyone can kind of do spin offs right at -tations and things like that so the reason that we haven't seen a lot of this so far is because of that seventy year the thing that in the interim you'd have negotiate with estates and that could be quite expensive and complicated and just not worth your time but seventy years ago from now around the time the film really started to take off so we're entering a period where you won't need to negotiate writer this don't need to worry about the rights publicity and people's the states you can just go. Oh that person that died in nineteen sixty something. Chuck Him in a new film yeah. Exactly let's say Robin Williams famously. Kind of was adamant that his image was not to talk to that and put a bunch of provisions in his world meant his estate. Couldn't do stay James Dean done but yeah as I guess. We're now getting to the point where people were recorded in quality. That was high enough for them to be digitally recreated so obviously there was film in Nina Twenties and Thirties. But it wasn't covered it wasn't in high definition but in the the.

"Now this too much travelers too much traffic in terms of Internet and too much interference in terms of angering down a narrow street in London. Whether isn't great mobile signal so no I wouldn't be able to run a youtube video high quality. So why would you be able to play a game but these platforms are being marketed. As play anything in any way kind of thing take your console wherever the infrastructure just. Isn't there yet and it's never really likely to be there. Five years being held up as this big promise but it still gonNA. It's it's a huge huge load on a network if lots of people suddenly start streaming video and four K.. Games at sixty frames per second in ten eighty eighty PRI. Yeah and with five G.. We're the very early stages of rolled out there. I think it's in like a handful of cities still in the UK. And that just saw prohibits even though so a potential of these these services working one interesting thing from one of the recent covers all wired magazine. If you're not a subscriber please do subscribe was about about Google Seder and we went and spoke to the team behind the production of the end Phil Harrison. WHO's one of the executives on this actually said the in his opinion that the fact that as a streaming platform is probably one of the least interesting things about it to him? He was saying that essentially he sees this. As the way to think about gaming aiming is changing and the way that games will be developed in the future we'll be for services are more about streaming and more about playing wherever you like not relying on the particular hardware aware and that move to cloud infrastructure again in some ways he would say that because that's what Google does what they're building. It's I don't know I think maybe maybe it was always a bit of a way of being like yeah we know that the streaming things not going to be great to begin with but in the future it could be better which it seems like a lot of reviews have said head yes I think the talk from our review was terrible but tantalizing glimpse of what's to come technologies there the cultural awesomeness the of is good video games. Isn't there so the moment you just playing a tech Demo paying a hell of a lot of money for it which is why it kind find. It doesn't feel like the launch of a new. It's not a console. A new video games platform feels like an extended Beta. The people have to pay quite a bit of money to be part of You can read Matt Cameron's for review on Y. Dot K. and we're going to be covering stadia an awful lot more over the coming months as hopefully morphs into something that actually amounts to something Second story this week speaking of dead on arrival. Well no I mean that's a terrible segue Second story this week. We'll just go the mammoths Matt Matt Matt Reynolds talk about mammoths by I will. I will save you from that. That segue so they story. We're going to head all the way to you. Sir which is a region in northeast in Russia the forms are really really large. Chunk of Siberia is home to all kinds of interesting steps. Got Siberian Forests Tundra twice as because Germany. Those forests grizzly bears as loads and loads of mammoths. And the thing you need to know about these mammoth in Siberia. The Siberian permafrost is foreing at quite a terrifying race. Actually GonNA policy. Siberia are warming about twice as fast as the rest of the planet and that's slowly. Softens is revealing the preferred preserved skeletons around ten million mammoths still buried there and all of these tests are making their way into China and the ivory trade. How people digging them up? So so what's going on right so to understand about this. Mammoth Trade China and Russia. You I need to understand the kind of we've got all these mammoths and not really works and the most important part of this is In Russia searching for and selling mammoth tusks is completely legal as long as collectors obtain a license and the trade is also really really lucrative. A single task can raise nearly twenty seven thousand pounds when it's sold into into China so with my dumb hats on presumed the this was more of a scientific endeavour that there would be real scientific merit to US going out into the depths of Siberia area and another thing these ancient creatures and understanding more about them born in actually is is a bully. Mammoth gold rush absolutely and in Siberia that Edgy. Call this ice gold white gold or ivory to this sense that there's a kind of a mammoth gold rushes you like. And that's because there's ten million of these mammoths buried in in the permafrost are actually if you're a residence Iberia. It's quite common to be walking around and come across a mammoth skeleton. And that means that the scientific community that quite a lot preserved mammoth skeletons but also because of the demand for ivory in China it's really really lucrative traits if these toss collectors who are quite often quite poor people that Livni's kind of Siberian regions. They've seen the some people right entrepreneurs millionaires have been like. Oh Yeah where'd you get your money in memory of trade so people go rent equipment. Roses or rent pumps their blast away the soil under the permafrost essentially or what sort of like the top layer and trying to extract the tasks. And if you sell one on TUSLA's enough for an entire year's wages even more than that really twenty seven thousand pounds of Tuscan each. Mammoth dumb question has to write each mile of does have to toss ten million and so that's twenty million tusks worth twenty seven thousand pounds each in a region of Russia with no discernible economy where life expectancy is amongst its is lowest in the world. This is a really really poor isolated place and there's gold hiding under the mud. Yeah exactly and it's all about this. Massive the demand for ivory in China so basically China is the world's largest market for ivory and really really good friend about mammoth Tusk is the it's more or less completely indiscernible or indistinguishable from elephant ivory so you can sub one for the other. That's what I was going to ask about next. I think mammoths I think elephants connected. Is this like math Goldrush. Good for the elephants. Yeah that's the question really so the answer is maybe maybe which is kind of annoying off with their so so let me give you a little bit context right so what happens with these tasks that come from Siberia the usually end up making their way to China via Royal Hong Kong because that tends to be kind of a gateway for into China and although when you see a mom of taxes you quite yellow is quite discolored is going to be picked Brown cracks running running for and stuff like that. Wouldn't you carve up mammoth task. It's more or less indistinguishable from elephant ivory. So what you tend to find one of these towns in China where every big into ivory carving and even the soldiers mummify for people like you know some of that and what happened in China in twenty seventeen. Is it China in a banned the import and sales of an ivory and since then it looks like ivory carvers and vendors switching to mammoth material on massive. Sounds kind kind of good for elephants. I guess if is poaching being elephant ivory being outlawed and my mom's coming into substitution but things are not necessarily that supercross. Some people think that bringing in mammoths might sustain the trade in ivory. There's this idea that actually we want people to buy ivory full stop and if people can buy mammoth mammoth ivory were. Maybe they'll say oh. I thought that was mammoth. Ivory but really elephant ivory there's been kind of cases of ivory being mislabeled even if the tusk themselves out really mislabeled simple so some people argue that actually could be damaging to elephants and that's why in August as an attempt to get manners on the endangered species list so a species that's been extinct for thousands. Thousands of years now wants to be labeled endangered species. Able no one asks the member so exactly bit late for me me. So basically Israel brought this conference called site cit airs which is big wildlife trafficking conference if she like and they said we think Mama should be added to the endangered species list which means they would not be able to be traded outlawed the trading of mirrors that that was basically to be turned down because a lot of people say that. Actually this is. This is good right. If these vendors can get their ivory from legal means free Russia then people aren't going to be looking to poach ivory that's what those elephants. There's one study that said that. Yes the eight eighty tons of of exported from Russia in an average year. Would you poaching of elephants from fifty five individuals like fifty five thousand individuals to thirty four thousand. So there's some evidence that perhaps this mammoth ivory trade is. That's a elephants. It seems to me that mammoth ovaries less price than than elephants. I for it seems like it's a win win in the two and you get this thing that's been ask from the ground and from thousands of years ago I would quite like the. I'll be much more interested in a mammoth Tyson. Elephant tusks their boards and down the elephants. It does seem that Chinese unease ivory buyers are slowly waking up to the sense that maybe manner can be an okay substitute so people sometimes is more interested in the quality of the carving. How intricate the Trinket or that kind of thing is although it's worth noting that there are some things like chopsticks or the bigger carving things the the they typically are usually elephant elephant ivory is cleaner? It's it's a slightly different quality so there are some substitutes. That just don't seem to Saban easily so mammoths too good for little it'll trinkets and pendants and medallions the small things. But as you say when you scale it up you start to see the imperfections in the slight differences in the makeup of these tasks. But can we just rewind unwinded. Let's go let's go back to Siberia you mentioned how these mammoth hunters are getting this stuff out of the the permafrost and the story that we around this week on the site had this very sort of vodka tive scene where it laid out this wild West Frontier. How are they actually getting these things out of the ground? Yeah it's quite remarkable. So what they'll do is they'll kind of asked local villages and stuff. I seen any of those mammoths around and they'll say oh. Yeah actually a bunch eh flooring up here and you typically might be a little bit a bone or something that's kind of sticking out of the mud and then what they do is they get these huge firefighter's hoses and then they get. They have engines often engines from engines from scooters or motorbikes or things like that that they basically kind of engineer or tinker with so they can be they turn them into water puns and what they do is they essentially blast away this this bank of mud and slew and essentially what is left. All this mud washes away these skeletons. uh-huh and we'll end up doing. Is they take the TUSK which obviously worth bunch of money but they leave behind. The whole Red Skeleton was nice is that sometimes they also really interesting interesting finds I think they found some kind of an ancient war. It's about forty thousand years old and they kind of gave this to a local museums as soon as they really archaeologically significant things as well but but it really is quite a brute force. We're talking digging. Tunnels and sprang ceilings and stuff. And there's been lots of cases of accidents where Tuscon of Ruse News of. Clap the store that you had injuries quite Quite dangerous work. Yeah absolutely and Russia's made attempts to regulate it right so you now have to have a license to go out and and sell mammoth tusks and the people that we spoke to in.

"The term they use is actually. It's emergency something resuscitation. So I had a reader and a few the stories that ran around this. Oh Wow that's an amazing await know that it isn't devices. It's sort of a medical procedure replacing blubber saline which is pretty extreme. Because we've we've known about out cooling down but we've not done it by replacing that blood including the body down that much. It seems like it buys quite all the time whether we don't exactly know what went on if actually help someone or what. The results are yet. Which is why we're not going to talk about it anymore? Because that's pretty much where it starts and ends. What did you learn this week amid island? Another seagull fact at at my series the number of seagulls in the UK has quadrupled between two thousand and two thousand fifteen according to the recent seagull census so that the government agency and he kind of counts the number of seagulls regular intervals and the number of them is massively on the rise partly G to growing waste food being left out and he islands Canarias could environment for them to grow tune in next week for another CEO. Fact from amid. Matt Burgess. What did you learn vans? Vans they go this this week. I learned the vans in the U K. Now travel fifty six percent more miles in total than they did in the two thousand. This is because a huge increase in Van's edge youtube deliveries essentially And it over the same period. Cars have only started to travel nine presentable. Thanks Amazon Matt Reynolds. I learned that slots can hold their bread breath. I can make an old bridges lungs they want. They can hope that threat though for up to forty minutes underwater ultimately on land as well. It's really really long time long dolphins. Why is because they can reduce the heart rate by about to about one third of the normal heart rate is it kind of slows? Donald Metabolism. So they need to burn auction more slowly so they can hold their breath. That's how but why we don't know why and I also know. They can swim three times faster than they can walk. We suggest to me that doing stuff in water and so they want to hold their breath. That's I didn't know she didn't give him a grilling on his his van question. Follow up so that all the follow this week. Did you Matt Reynolds. I learned this week that there are only three countries in the world. Oh that still don't use the metric system. I would ask you to guess what they ought. I've written them down on the show notes that you're looking at so I will reveal the man Mar Liberia and the United States even though the US in the late eighteen hundreds approved the use of the metric system. It's being quite slow to adopt it to to the point that it just hasn't even though the scientists and people in industry do use the metric system in the US. It's still imperial there. We go good perfect. Thank you very much. No additional grillings Matt Reynolds. So how have always trying to think of a clever question to stump you already. I think one thing. That's all right. Our first story this week is Google Stadium which launched promising to change gaming forever. and hasn't Matt Burgess yes also this week we saw the long awaited by some people launch of Google Stadia. which is Google's big gaming play? It's it's effort to disrupt the multi billion dollar gaming industry and really try and take a piece of that sort of money pie as well money pies not a thing. You can have a taste taste the money. Pi If you like so visit yes so for recap. This is bought giggles stadium raise Is Not a console is a cloud gaming service which means that Google is using its general sort of googling us to bring cloud computing to the gaming world which means it's data centers are being used to being games over the Internet. TV phone laptop tablet computer any other device essentially things that can use google chrome to play on your TV. You have to have a google chrome cast ultra which uses chrome and there is no real hardware to this? Oh Google has built a controller which you can use to play games. But you don't have to use Google's version of it and you can use an expert's control of types of controllers was bashing is largely the same as of a control is out there and is pretty much like a subscription service in some life and that's what we knew before it launched So one of my colleagues common he does a lot of games. Coverage has spent a few days with Google Stadia trying out in real world conditions and you can read his very indepth two thousand word review on. What can you K- and I'm sure you've probably read reviews on other sites as well if you're into your gaming and universal takeaway if you like is it's not that goods? Yes so maybe let's start with the actual games which are obviously obviously a fundamental part of any sort of gaming system. There isn't really a huge amount. That has come with Google Stadium. There's only one exclusive at launch. Which is again called guilt which is developed by Rhyme Studio Tequila works and it's the only exclusive title that Google has got and it's a bit of a horror? Ah Game which is involved in this kid that you have to take around and complete various tasks not know what it is but it's very it doesn't seem like it's a blockbuster game essentially something that has come from from a smaller studio and really that is the only exclusive Other than that. There's a lot of games that you can well as a few of the Games that you can pay for this right right deputy to rise tomb raider metrics assassin's creed Odyssey. Farming stimulates simulates. You put that one in. And these also pick hiccup top games is only about twenty two games launched with Google Stadia ready and all these are all titles one exclusive more than two or three years old these old old old titles that list I just wrote off there was a pick pick of the very best of these twenty two which isn't a huge Palette to pick from. If you're going to spend a regular monthly fee or by gaming controller from Google. Yes these games most of already head of they're not there's not many exclusive exclusive and imagining joining. Most people are already play. These games already. Owned these games so how much my paying here for access to these games appropriate pay them different platform so there's a few different pricing options So you could buy the crime cost. Ultra which comes with a premium subscription to stadia pro which costs one hundred and nine hundred thousand pounds. Nothing you get control of with that as well potentially chilly and you used and then the other option is the state stadia pro which is eight nine thousand nine per month. which gives you access zest to some free games as well as some paid ones as well so I mean not to come kind of sequel steadier politics but the point of the system I guess is the fact is what the launch games all right now? It's the fact that you can play them anywhere on any device regardless of how powerful device is and that's kind of stadia promise but but there's a bit of a problem with so the people that are buying this right now. We're going to be like the mad early adopter fanatics not mad dedicated early adopter fanatics. They really WANNA get in early with this exciting. You technology and all Google's giving them is games that they've already played on other platforms. Several years ago in some circumstances played better on the platforms some years ago issues with lag and particularly when people have been taking these games out into the messy real world where Internet connections Shinzo Perfect. You don't have white Ethernet. It becomes a problem. And that's what law reviews being saying. It's like yeah it might be good one day but right now it's kind of rubbish Bache and the people that are binding on day one are going to be its harshest critics because daddy early adopters and if what seeing is a sort of impression impressive technical all demo with no real substance than it's just a bit like Oh why did I pay my good money for this. Yeah so none of us hair of actually tried it at this stage but my who reviewed it forest Forest Matt Cameron. What about freelances has reviewed and said basically two scenarios which he's put forward so he was drawing drawing using the chrome cost auto and home and he said the in this scenario the software launched very quickly there was noticeable lag? There was no stutter impediment when trying to use the games and when he tried to use stadia on his computers again in a home home based environment and to use on your computer you have to use stadiums controller. What a controller? This moment which basically it worked so on his computer tested with an xbox controller. He tested with a headset COUPLA. Ah Things and he said this or technical side of this home in his house worked fantastically and which you would sort of hope for good Internet connection. Yeah one thing. I was kind of disappointed disappointed by that. So you mentioned that you can play on your computer which is really awesome. But it's a shame that most of these titles got Lawrence. There were console games. You'RE GONNA play on your computer. We're the controller. It would be awesome if you could say have certain games and maybe you can only play with a keyboard. Or maybe you'd have games on the console because it'd be greater than you could access across both rather than saying the minute right. I have a laptop like play games really but I might play one onto might be kind of fun. It'd be great if I could have prescriptions. have excuse but I'm going to dip into those and console gaming or the same time. There's actually an opportunity to do this. It feels is not really being taken advantage of. And this is the best stuff gets kinda muddled so you subscribe to stadia pro. which gets you access to the stadia service into which a bundled some games? It's not many and read over long-term probably none or near none and then you have to rebuy the games that you already bought two to three years ago. Oh and you might think oh well you just buying essentially time on Google service to play them but still being charged up to sixty pounds four the game. Even though you're getting is essentially time Google Service. It's quite muddled as a play for the gaming community and even though it's a multibillion dollar industry at this stage age with the early adopters again this is a community of fanatics. And while whatever you were saying is Google's got the technical aspects of it down quite neatly way you've got to get Internet Internet connection. What it hasn't nailed is gaming? Yeah I think what you said just then it's quite quite apt you're you're paying. Subscriptions has almost the server time. You're paying that monthly fees that you don't have to go out and buy the expensive gaming. PC and what. It's paid latest games. Assuming these games come to Google Stadia in good time talks the real crux of the matter and bigger promises. Well in this Google vision of gaming is that you can play any way you can play on your mobile phone on the bus. You can take it on. Sort of like a tablet or things like that anything we've chromium essentially using chrome this very early stage found that it just. It doesn't really work so he tried to play a few games with a decent ideology connection And they wouldn't so of load or they wouldn't really connect tried on certain Public Wifi on trains and coffee shops and again games weren't able to launch and that seems like a really fundamental issue this even his early early stage when the promise is this gaming wants to be gaming for everywhere for everything for every time but the day. You can't really do and admittedly admittedly some of that is out of Google's hands because you need a good Internet connection Google not providing now but it still seems like a little bit my floor in the bigger vision at least to me and in turns of access to titles so the twenty available at launch is quite good in terms of console launch four number but in terms of newness and exclusivity is more more or less nonexistent. And the problem. That Google's got is it's not a games developer not against publisher. It doesn't have this rich history. The nintendo and Sony and even though Mark Soft did come into the industry quite late that Mike's still had from its days of working on direct tax. xbox Google doesn't have that so particularly going up against playstation and xbox which have subscription services gives you access to huge back catalogue of games and you just get dozens and dozens of titles. The play as part of the subscription people are going to presume that stadium is that and right now for the foreseeable future stadia. Isn't that so I was speaking talking to mark soft about projects cloud which has its competitor to Google Stadium which will be coming out towards the end of next year and a nice line the they kept on repeating being over and over again. What it said? Yeah but can play on the bus. They said what would you expect to be able to stream a youtube video in high quality on that bus on my mobile network. The answer in London. Ordinarily is.

"On the same floor are highly questionable. I'm I'm twenty interpreters of the House. It's time to know apparently based yeah. Apparently you need to build a thermally contained room in your house. It should be like building a thermally containing airstream. Actually you know what you could use a refrigerator what I just. I just need a box and this is something that somebody but he also has more time to work on. Just Cooler. Reviews could do dedicated person and they. They came up with some sort of climate control box. That was lately like noise proof and they can do all of the thermal and the noise testing there but then the problem becomes if you are in closing it into into a small space than the ambient air becomes a lot more of an issue and you could have significantly impeded the ability that glued of work the union the large enough space that the natural air flow is sort of helping his despite the heat in the air. Although one thing that I've done with core tests ever talk about is I literally have a thermometer that gives me point one centigrade That was my criteria and looking for some home thermometer had to go digital so it quickly glance at it and jot down okay. Ambient air three feet away from the testbed. Was this when I connected that test. And every single temperature reading I subtract that current ambient measurement from that exact load temp from it. But apparently. That's not enough if there's a huge you judge variance in temperatures just from one year to the next one situation to the next so I would like to say that. The average is about sixty eight degrees Fahrenheit Fahrenheit but sometimes seventy two sometimes it's sixty four. And how much is that affecting so. We don't pay you for average son. You Patrick. I was waiting for the surly response to that and I got it. What's up with NEON war benchmark? It's amazing and you need to install it right now and run it on everything on and then do that again. In fact I was playing around with this Intel. Look the other night I they have a eight thousand core I seven Nook and I when I found out it was available. I immediately downloaded. It's free gift creative free At account with Cry Engine. You don't have to have their you don't have to have the Kretek Developer stuff you know if the Dow on anything except the benchmarks a standalone application. So you added to your library for free. Download it and it's just beautiful. I I love that like it. That blade runner look it. Looks like the first blade runner movie. kind of it's it's instead of a flying car. You have a drone they showed this. CAS Yes it was being rendered at C. S. Four K.. Thirty frames per second on a Vegas fifty six and looked just fine. I was amazed that I was able to run it on just the integrated until like six thirty HD graphics or whatever is in this nook Iris six fifty five. Actually but I mean I had to run it a really real low resolution but it was running passably dislike. Check it out before. Go down and actually play with it on the big gaming system but it's Just astonishing water effects and the lighting like the windows than the neon glow the interacts like the light interacting with Objects is just a beautiful benchmark. And what's cool about it is. It's totally platform agnostic. If you haven't checked out any real time ray tracing stuff yet. You do not need an Nvidia graphics card. This is not artifacts run invidia but it also run an Indian even Intel so take your resolution choose the intensity of the Ray retracing effect and it does run on Intel CPU graph. I can confirm that six fifty five. The Iris Pro Graphics. But it's not it's not a great situation. I mean you're going to be running. Eight hundred by six hundred data really acceptable frame rate right. It's it's just like downright eerie realistic. Like in the opening. Shabi how you see glass and raindrops down the glass. And just they totally nailed those facts and to think that this is something that could be implemented with critiques. Engine in and run on any Graphics Card is pretty amazing. Yeah it's beautiful teufel. Hey you remember loon loom with an M Lucas looming like Bernard or the Canadian coin. So loon was It's funny it's a alphabet owns than we used to think of them. As being in Google and the ideas you have high-altitude like weather balloons heights. Do Balloons That would sit in the stratosphere and provide internet connectivity to chunks out off the planet. Yeah he's talked about this earlier this year. That's right so Tonight's did I see an article. No this November twenty twenty one two thousand nine hundred and this is new stuff as of this Okay so loon has a deal with Telefonica and they are going to bring Internet to parts the Amazon. So I bring this up in part because it means what am I. Great Nightmares which is that? The entire surface of the planet is saturated bathed covered unavailable to be away from the Internet. is this much closer Yeah so The actual deal is the commercial agreements with Internet Para Todos says tech crunch that is Quotes also backed in part by facebook and the Development Bank of Latin America. Erica and they're bringing internet connectivity to remote locations in Latin America and apparently This is going to be parts of the Amazon rainforest in Peru. You starting in twenty twenty They still have to deal with Some regulatory requirements. Who of course this is Commercial deployment of high altitude balloons and There's some kind of wild stuff going on What didn't know is that loaded with Telefonica back in May after a point? Oh earthquake a Kit Peru And they've been kind of like Working with PRU on their Telefonica Peru and several projects. The only one that I didn't realize that telecast which the Canadian company was working to do a system for a low Earth Orbit Satellite Constellation with Luna so It's going to be about two hundred thousand people of the two thousand people in this area of the Loretto region in Peru Maybe a quarter of them have something like three g connectivity. Currently so far the Israelites continues to Corpus world. Aw Google is such a service to. Because now they've they've brought the capability of stadium gaming to these people in Peru these report all locations with their Internet balloons. They're going to enable gaming like you've never seen it before in areas where it wasn't possible before and I think that's incredible when I applaud Google for their efforts. I expect to see Internet balloons floating around the sky in your me and just basically enriching everybody's lives and also providing just a beautiful backdrop. How how better to enjoy nature than with a giant silver stringy balloon with a satellite looking thing hanging off of it? I don't think it's going to be real visible from ground level taking I I again. I don't think you're going to be able to see it for most of the area. It covers without With the naked eye. Maybe none of course luge looks like it's also like twenty feet above the ground right now you yeah I mean personally I think the cloud they're making a cloud cloud think about it. Oh I haven't yeah. I'm trying to find a picture of a a Portuguese. Man of war Celia FA- Salis Ban. I can't even pronounce the file name for that one. It looks like a Portuguese man of war In the sky dropping little tentacles Internet's all over. Its footprints leading. Gentlemen if you're new to this podcast you listen to this week. "It's a good thing I like if I had a lot. Nice people work over. Yeah I fix it Kit they they offer. I think they still offer this. There was a kid to add a second. hard-drive your Mac mini and the Mac mini when it still had two and a half inch hard drives for two thousand twelve model. I bought bought this Kid's game when this nice zipper bag opened up. It's got all the stuff I need and it also had this like clam shell tool. Kit was like miniature screwdriver. All these bits and a bit like an extender and that thing long after the Mac mini was gone. This has been years right now. I still have that little screwdriver kit. And it's always with me and I have used it to. It's everything from putting batteries in my son's toys to you know fixing computers taking apart laptops in it pretty much has every bit. You're going to need to take apart. Apple stuff has got a little Turks bits and stuff in so they're pretty good longevity on that especially considering my son has flung it Across the room a couple of times and the seen better days. But it's it's one of the most useful things I've ever bought and I literally just got it like as an accessory with my Mac mini. Install all kit at the time. It's a good thing it's a good thing. Oh my goodness cy where more way we were talking about computer hardware but this actually you know. La You're you're a little bit down on. VR was down a little worried about VR VR. As needed pick me up does need help does need to pick the. VR needed a flagship. They needed the killer APP. That's the term in the industry and is a killer APP like Eh needs. Mario Sixty four. That makes you buy the sixty four when you see it. A toys arrested kiosk. Ask So Apparently the the half-life Alex that was has been sort of pre-announced then teased and now it's been officially announce as of today and half life. Alex is coming in March of next year. A number of outlets including the verge urge have I look on this. They're able to they have some screen shots and video and it's is the next part of the half life story so it's the same length of go to the orange box came out a long time ago and so since the orange box which was like two thousand seven or something We've had rumors and Games in development that were cancelled and now at this point beyond on those episode one and episode two additions that we had That was part of the orange box do came out with the orange box. Weren't actually going to have a new full stand won't game and it's a VR game. So I feel like this might be something that can really drive. VR SALES VR interest interest. We have a few months to kind of build up that sort of excitement about an sure. There'll be plenty at. CAS about this. As well shock you'll be showing off headsets. Maybe they'll even be a demo of this. I don't know it's also interesting. I mean this is valves big. Play to to add some relevance to this yes and I mean if you're watching the video. The graphics are stunning. Of course of course they have a really good highly optimized very well integrated advair experience. I'll try it out this while those things where I look at this and I think okay this could be the thing that gets me. VR Is so far have not been terribly impressed with the stuff. That's out there. And I don't like dealing with some of the motion issues because I'm very susceptible to that. But if this performs at a really high level on reasonably affordable hardware then that could be a compelling thing and of course we don't know what the GP landscapes look like in the spring and early summer of next year. Either right so just kinda funds a check this out and especially if you're a fan of the series to know that there is a full new game coming and if they're smart at least for the first for some period of time it would be of your exclusive. I have not heard advair exclusive. I've just heard that it's sort of built from the ground up to be VR game with Alvis claiming so that doesn't mean they can't make get into a PC game with the mouse and keyboard. But I it's definitely VR. I approach which is nice. And it's something that it makes things like office simulator. Seem like a toy which is really what those were the the game like the Nintendo. Gamecube that you could interact with This is a different level all of immersion. So if I mean if something like What is the the twenty seventy seven game cyberpunk getting name right twenty seventy seven if that had been vr first? Then maybe that would have driven more interest. Because I mean I mean Jonah Reeves alone that how much Yana would be are a matrix game and VR. Think about this Patrick literally put on the headset. And you go into the Matrix. I'm down with it and you know better late than never. That's all I'm GonNa say better late than never Vocal performance issues with Dave redemption to. We talked about that. We talked about it again last week or four last last week Apparently the Vulcan Vulcan performance issues within video cards has been resolved. They give any details on that or are they evasive to say we're very big. I was looking for release notes. And there there wasn't a whole lot Sean Peletier From nvidia had tweeted this out. I looked at the customer support site and it was just a very brief office driver. Update the The note was basically just that it improved of Vulcan performance there was another issue uh-huh Raider crashing into ex mode. They fixed but what was interesting to me about. This is the fact that we had talked about some finger-pointing with the development action into and then Currently outlets were reporting and it was on Reddit that users were submitting. You know if they were on at USA one uh-huh to on the new rising three thousand. CPA worked just fine people in our PC. Her public discourse showers saying yeah. I'm on the the launch BIOS still in its IT works. It opens and runs and people on different variants of agenda on a amd rice three thousand. It was crashing on startup. So they couldn't even get into into the game and play it so it was a game engine update about a week ago now and now and and the the developers had stated that it was issues with Graphics Drivers Butts Videos come forward and they have this hot fix. So apparently they're addressing grassing some of those Volkan performance and the stalling is what they specifically cited stalling on some systems with foreign six core. CPU's I hope. And I haven't done testing yet but I WANNA do testing and hopefully they have fixed the problem with those unusual frames spikes that we're only in Volkan where x twelve is actually running a lot smoother across the board normally you'd think that a Volkan game optimized for that. API would run better in Bulkin doc in frames per second. On average higher those ninety nine th percentile frames were also higher which led to less of a slick the less smooth gameplay experience so that micro stutter we stock about a lot making make it all stutter. Less people Field Kick Grand Prize winner. The twenty nine hundred hakodate prize This is slick. This is where you kind of. Were you drooling a nerdy fashion when you read about this on the hakodate dot com. Well Jeremy who works Is these are like main news writer. He printed this out last night to us and he sold it to me as a trike order. He's like maybe you can't buy a tri quarter but it didn't make and this is just like if you think about. Yeah it's he was saying well it's bigger than it's bigger than a next generation ration- try quarter is not there than original series. Try Quarter. It's actually kind of in between so if if we've already got it to the point where we can put This multi use fully functional sensor thing. You just take out into the field and do various sensing with it. I don't even pretend to understand everything that it does. And and what it's capable of but you can look at the project and see how it's made and what it actually can do and it's just like a field research which data device so basically a trike order and I just thought that was really cool and of course this One Hundred Twenty Five Thousand Thousand Dollar Grand Prize Nice. It already looks like it has a pretty polished design and a pretty polished APT COMPANION APP for it. So that's pretty amazing. I mean I don't know I'm excited by yeah. I'm still trying to figure out exactly what the sensors can do. And if you if you've chiefs watched the video you see somebody crouching down there on the edge of A. They're reaching down into this water among the reads the lily pads and they're pointing isomer career biology kind of experiment. Yeah well.

"Thousand five hundred and The core I three one zero one zero zero so now we're into binary code. It looks like the three one O one. Oh is a sixty five watt part. That'll be four thousand eight threads. We've been the core. I three as hyper threading so if this is correct we're gonNA see desktop parts that are now going to be up to. What's the high one? Is it ten. Course the core. I nine ten nine hundred K.. If this is accurate will be ten or twenty three parts. So so if that takes the place of the nine hundred K.. In the lineup. It'd be somewhere in that four hundred fifty two five hundred dollar range now. You're talking about ten core part so they clearly have felt some pressure from MD with the rising launch rising. Nine thirty nine hundred ax is a five hundred dollar twelve core twenty four thread part and and they come out with a ten core part and they can show. Hey here's our you know if they have similar performance because maybe they're hitting higher clock speeds and they have have some IPC advantages than they could have a compelling argument that. Hey we're just as good as rising nine but I'm sure that's not going to be their messaging their messaging. Jim will be. We are the leader. We have the highest gaming performance. Now we have a tencor part for the same price and it's it's it's good for anybody especially if you're already on that platform in your you have envy of the fight or council on the amd side and don't necessarily want switch platforms right now. That could be a great drop in update but of course I don't know if it will be a drop in update will this work on Z.. Three seventy three ninety boards require a news. E Four Ninety four seventy we shall see so basically gleaned to waiting game right. Is this rumor it so it's a leak and actually there's another week I didn't write about this but Somebody posted a link to Intel's own support site and it was a pdf of the new tenth generation Nook they're they're small next. Unit of computing will many PC kits this and their forty nanometer so why was from going through the specs looking him up like Oh okay. It's the same thing again. The the ninth or the eighth eighth gender is the current high end and the big disappointment to me about that is not that it doesn't have enough processing power. Core I. Seven nook is a perfectly acceptable desktop his top productivity machine at very good like small home theater or server but it doesn't well on the home theater side. The problem is it doesn't have great graphics affects chip and it certainly doesn't really have any legitimate gaming capabilities and then it doesn't have some of the added features that there are ten. Nanometer architecture brings to the table such as the General Evan Graphics which are hugely forward you'd be basically getting the equivalent of one of AMD's Reisen AP EP US in an Intel knock that level of performance that we just haven't seen from Intel before but we're GONNA have to keep waiting so hopefully at some point twenty twenty money we get that look. That has the faster graphics but it looks like across. The board Intel has kind of had to take a step back and refresh their products with the new generation number. That is still using the same architecture as we've seen for what the last few years now they're still on the sky like derivatives at this point and so we wait yeah. Amd Their by releasing reisen when they did by being really aggressive with it on. And what I consider to be an immature platform with x five seventy which is just now with its latest. microcode updates the edgy. So one dot zero dot zero dot four revision B of. That's pretty much like release. This has released. Radio's pretty much ready for release at one. Oh three Abba the last one but it certainly was kind of in that pre release stage when it first hit and we were getting. I had an as rock board. That had five live BIOS UPDATES in July. That's how frequently. AMD was pushing out new microcode for these processors so clearly that platform is not mature. And that's it's a pretty aggressive. It's very aggressive. And by the way Azraq as rock the motherboard vendor. It's one of the big four. You'll see if you shop from other boards in our testing and our experience they've been the most aggressive about pushing out motherboard BIOS updates although gigabyte gives them a run for their your money it seems like between Gigabyte and as rock. You've got the latest microcode before the other vendors have available so you're on the bleeding edge. There's a good platform for us to be testing. We get stuff really fast on those but that was a prime example. When was the last time you bought a new system the platform you bought into a new EP socket by the motherboard and had a half dozen BIOS updates in the first month? Yeah well it seems like I. I waited several weeks For the update added a desperately needed with rising launched. But that was also that first I intersection rise out of place. So right and there was a lot of those. Were like memory compatibility and adding things to the wall my vendor lists and just tweaking seeking stuff but these these are updates that change processor behavior change the boost duration change the conditions of boost. Change the voltage of the processor. Answer so they were trying to figure out how to get the most out of these parts and manage temperatures and you know they're maybe maybe even addressing some on jeopardy concerns. We don't know that was something that it seemed like Intel was kind of Feeding out there to some outlet so we don't know we're not gonNA know off these things have any kind of long term issues until we've waited but number of years but it doesn't seem like that's the case and they seem to have gotten about as much as they can out of them With these last two update. So it's not really affecting performance as much as those initial BIOS updates did but something to consider. I don't know I just always hope that they're not releasing all of these updates because of things they've broken various platforms for various vendors. But yeah well yeah. There was a whole Red Denver dimension to thing but there there was so much finger pointing. I still don't have a clear picture of who was actually at fault there and then I don't think anybody does. Yeah they patched it and now I think I have that in the lists. We'll talk about that. This episode of this week in computer hardware is brought to you by the crude. I fix it. Google Stadia: Everything You Need to Know About the Streaming Game Revolution
"Google is finally I would say. It's huge huge. BECCA will all eventually stream video games onto any device. We want now. The search shine hoped this model will one day. Replace the traditional console but it's lodging to some really negative. Get a reviews Scott. You'd have extensive time with the service. What what did you find Lameta applying right now as I talked to you and it's serious multitasking? Running on a macbook air. And I I find that it works in the sense that it's streaming games. But what does that mean in terms of working because we've seen streaming games for the past decade on live I g FORCI now invidious service Yeah other ones that have come and gone ex. Cloud is in Beta right now Playstation now oh so sure games can stream but we've learned over the years that that depends on the quality of your connection and there can be some lag immi- usage with it. I was surprised at how good it looked Donna. TV with the chrome cast. Ultra a little less impressive when right now it's still needs to be together with this controller. Clunky I had to go scramble to find a USB USB SPEC- wire just to make this work to make it work on a laptop or a phone when it gets even stranger. You don't need the tether if you're using an xbox controller corrina controller with this. You can do that on the laptop and phone using other controller but you need the state controller to work with your TV totally confuse the one thing about consoles. Obviously obviously you got a pretty consistent experience right you blow it in the game. You play the game. This is different right there. Consistency or the experience will vary based on the connection speed. I'm using your office connection downplaying destiny or showing it and the thing is you can see some hiccups. In the way it's running it's a little bit of jitter especially for for online shooter could be really frustrated and for any game and the question is sure that functions but with stadia right now you have to buy in to this founders edition package if you you want to get into that. which has the chrome cast of the controller? You could just get the code for the you kind of skip that and eventually. Just connect online that free tier That they've been promising is twenty twenty so you don't need to buy all these pieces be Kinda do need to buy the pieces and you. There's a pro. Subscription Games are purchased separately. So I think that's also a disconnect a lot of people think this might be like net flix. Yeah we're you're subscribing and getting the game that was kind of when it was initially pitched that was kind of like the gut reaction action was like. Oh great like an all you can eat type plan or were you have to pay full price for these Games on top of the service right. Yes like redemption to destiny to those. Are the top games right now. There's a twenty two games I played about six of them I it's not the latest and greatest list of of all the top games. The other thing is that Google's Google's promising this whole wild world of youtube connections with hosts Rican dive into their instances where you can have massive massive like thousand player battle so royal type experiences. That stuff's not here yet. What we're looking at her just pretty standard games that the streaming over the cloud on their servers and looking sometimes really good and sometimes maybe not so I was more impressed with the streaming quality than I expected and the controller feels nice but it's another controller but if I just replicating what's out there I think what you're really doing is getting into a Beta right now? Yeah it feels like this. Is He'd definitely rules. Are Planning the flag on the ground you know for the broader future. But let's look at twenty twenty 'cause it's GonNa be huge for gaming right you've got beyond stadia. We've got the next xbox playstation Mike said Microsoft and Sony are already investing in their streaming services. And then we've got a post by IAN shirt today on Amazon potentially ramping up. Its own game service now. They've they've if ever got twitch at exactly the combination of twitch gaming service seems pretty potent. What do you think everything looks like? Yeah and their servers I mean Amazon's perfect primed to take on the back end system. Yeah and they could fold it into something like prime. I mean they could do. There's a lot of Amazon. Could do and it seems like a perfect match for them so I think right now youth players the questions. Where do you land for that? I also think you don't need to be going into the cloud you lose the ability to play off line and so while it's cool you can kind of play anywhere you do the carry the controller and find a place with a good Internet connection it resisted. The promise of being able to play this on. Your smartphone is fantastic like I play my games on the train. Ain't right in the Russian is terrible. That's why I actually prefer planning switch. It's all flying. I'm just playing like a dedicated to gaming system. I love to have it on my phone but the connection speeds just not going to cut it. Well let's we switch represents that proposition that was around from like the Invidia shield days of like this modular type of thing and then you've apple arcade in Google's holds a equivalent service. which is the idea of a subscription on the device download stuff and? It's kind of like the way that Netflix and other services work now to where he can download and play off line. If that came to something like a stadia then I think you may get the best of both worlds. But we're not at that point yet maybe we will be. and where will google really big. Is Everyone's beginning. Google flak I think justifiably in that a lot of the projects starting stop and so you don't know if this a sign that Google's committing into long-term even with Phil Harrison Jade Raymond and others who are in the gaming industry I think the server part is very important for Google. Yep How much it will resemble this in the coming coming years. We don't really know well again. Brian is GonNa kill me because I'm going to bring up five Jegan like this is a service that's seems tailor-made five g service. That's the other lodging works are canal right now but not really like. We're not going to get to a point where it's going to be mainstream for another two or three years but I think that's the timeframe where I see stadia actually kind of filling some of it's true. Promise that two or three year timeframe if you'll get like the decade of the next ten years but things move at that speed. The idea of streaming high-speed stuff like this and have it work is really exciting and that could apply even beyond games by. I think we are looking at like the very beginnings of that once again. And so I I like would google is exploring with stadia. But that's like if you're not buying into it right if you're if you're looking to buy something this does not seem like anything other than what a someone who is a technique and wants to play around with this idea. We get out of it. You can get these Games on other platforms and game consoles. Go on sale over the holidays so like the price. Differential is not that great. You got one hundred fifty dollars console now. So that's my charge. I'm Scott Stein. Thanks for joining. This
How Gaming Has Changed in the Past Few Years
"Probably bought or asked for a video game as a holiday gift at one point or another but this season it might might not be that simple there are more devices and platforms to choose from than ever before and a lot of different ways to play so before the online deals. Come out we've got our Wall Street Journal uh-huh video game reporter Sara Needham in here to help with navigate. Sarah Welcome. Thanks for having me. So how has gaming changed in the past few years while well You know it used to be really simple you would. You would get your game. You'd buy it at the a retail store. He'd come home. It's in front of a console or computer he would grind your way to the the end. And then you'd be done now. We can play on phones and tablets while socializing with friends who could be you know hundreds of miles away and there's really no end to games because developers keep updating them with new maps new missions new characters So the landscape is really changed and we don't even play games very much on discs anymore. We download load them and now we're trying to stream them over the Internet like we do with movies and music so like we said the holidays are coming up and I know that they're still are gaming consoles out there a and they're probably going to be on a few wishlist. Is this a good time to buy a new console. Well it depends on whether you have already one thing you want to consider is that so. The xbox swung from Microsoft or the playstation four from Sony. They came up their latest models in two thousand. Seventeen Those have better graphics more storage than the original versions that came out
Google Stadia Launch Review
"Reviews Google. Stadia are out one day before it launches for founders on Tuesday November nineteenth and the consensus is works better than expected but still not quite good. Enough there's some noticeable lag which is not a problem in slow paced games but may or may not cause issues on shooters just depending on how. Oh sensitive you are to it. Ars Technica Kyle. Orleans said it worked fine on Ethernet for him but was inconsistent to the point of aggravation on on his wife anyway. most Oh said it kind of feels like a Beta Verges Sean. Hollister said it felt more reliable than similar services. He's tested but does not compare to a high end console or PC DC and and gadgets. Jessica Condit said I wouldn't play any of these titles competitively on stadia but the services find enough for a relaxing evening. If you don't remember. Google Stadia has upped it. They added some games. So they're gonNA have twenty two games at launch for one hundred thirty dollars plus ten dollars a month plus twenty to sixty dollars per the game. It's interesting the the whole sort of like okay. It's not snappy enough for competitive gaming but it's totally fine and for a fun relaxing evening. Who are the people who want one and not the other Yeah it's very of course I mean mobile gamers I guess sure. Yeah I mean I would probably be one of those people who's like I don't i. Don't care about the snapping -sarily if I've got like three games that I like and I wanNA play a lot but just I wonder what you know. WHO's going to be diverted from from from getting Google stadium knowing it's a little bit sluggish? Yeah well even if it doesn't actually apply to them it's kind of interesting because it will diverge personal me like I. I actually do game and and that Noel Second Response Response Time is important. But I don't know if you remember but I was on when stadium was announced and we we had talked about one point and I'm like Joe Streaming Guy it's been doing doing screening for years and I was amazed I was for the Beta was amazing because there's just a few people on it but I was amazed by the sort of overall. Let's just go out there and do it attitude stadium. It's hard like that stuff is hard and in and user managing user complaints when users really don't understand like how streaming is affected by all the various the pieces between the server and your game controller. They were. They're taking a huge gamble Microsoft by lake coming forward. So it's it's it's going to be kind of interesting. This is the same crowd. Yeah that was like complaining about that season. Game of thrones being too dark. It's like well. I I think to answer your question Sarah Anybody who games on an older other xbox or playstation especially if the playstation three or xbox three sixty which there still are some people will be fine with this that. I got a peek at it this weekend and my feeling was for me. It's fine like I'm not a competitive gamer. I'm not really attuned to the leg. So those of you who are competitive or think you you know your competitive are going to notice it. I imagine most people aren't what's a bigger problem is what ours tecnicas Kyle. Orland pointed out. And that's to your point rob rob which is there something in his Wifi that caused issues that he didn't see an Ethernet and a lot of people are GonNa say this doesn't work. It's your fault. Even though it may be the router setting or their equipment or something else on their network slowing it down because there are so many variables there. Yeah Yeah. It's I think eventually chilly. They're going to work this out. I mean this is the same problem net flicks at very very early on. That's true stuttering and all this stuff so so getting those. CDN CDN's in place and they've got the got the bucks to do it. So
"google stadia" Discussed on Hands-On Tech
"Google really likes to release. Its things early meaning. Google doesn't mind letting some of its users in on a product or hardware it's releasing before it's perhaps all cooked in the tech world. This is absolutely nothing new. The stadium founders edition definitely falls into that category and that's not necessarily summarily a bad thing. It's just important to note that going in so what is stadium. Well stadium is what Google game console would-be but without the actual console stadium is totally cloud based meaning. It leans on Google's cloud servers to run and store the Games in its library. Everything is streamed from those servers to players device and that device could be a TV with the chrome cast ultra that's capable of four K.. Streaming it could also be chromebook own book or a laptop running the chrome browser. It could even be a Google Pixel phone. It makes a lot of promises and it's quite intriguing. Actually actually no costly console purchase needed just to sixty nine dollar controller coupled with a nine dollars ninety nine cents monthly subscription for four K to get at the stadium service you can get ten. Eighty P for free and with that players can get triple eight games stream to their devices in full four K.. Resolution at its peak with the support for HD are sixty frames per second and five point one surround sound even better because the games are running on Google servers in the cloud. It's like you're playing. The beefy EST gaming computer with the highest quality rendering settings on and updates will be done automatically behind the scene so many of the annoying knowing asterisks associated with PC gaming is kind of removed from the equation for the player. Just fire up the APP sync up the Stadia Controller that I have right here in play Klay top Tier Games but is this the future of gaming. Let's take a look at the stadium founders edition. This is what you get in the founders edition this whole package right here cost about while one hundred thirty dollars preordered back in June. It includes the controller that you have here which I'm GonNa talk about in a second And it also has this chrome cast ultra. This is the chrome cast that streams four K.. Resolution HDMI port. And then finally this is the power for the chrome cast ultra and important to note. It does have the wired Ethernet option. So you don't have to go fully wireless with the Crown Cast Ultra. You can wire it and you're ah you're probably just going to get better stability out of your streaming With stadium when you do that the controller I will say like it's got a really nice design. It feels really good in in the hands of the buttons. Feel Nice Everything the lay out. It's all laid out really nicely. You've got your pretty standard you know controller's analog and and digital controllers as well as the four button layout Four shoulder buttons up here but then you have kind of exclusive to the Stadia Layout you had had this options button. which are the three dots? Got The menu button right here. This is a capture button for when you want to capture things and in this early preview. That's not a feature. Yeah that's live neither is this. This is the assistant to Google Assistant Button And that's not a live during this early previews well. You can kind of see as I'm moving the controller color around they're just like little scratches throughout. We're pretty We're pretty delicate with this controller. Yet it seems to pick up marks pretty easily. Some some of these marks actually came from this. This is a smartphone mount you can snap onto the top. This was included in the box. But I don't believe that this is actually actually a included in the official founders edition but in snapping at to the the controller and off. It was already leaving some marks and stuff so if you're OCD that may bother you over time But overall I mean the controller. I really liked the feel of it. Other features that you'll find here on the bottom of three point five millimeter. Headphone Jack for plugging in headphones also has a little microphone again. This is another feature that is not active during the this early preview But you can ha- you use that microphone Talk inside of games and stuff like that and then up on the top just a USB see see charging port We'll say one thing I really like about this controller. Aside from the air comic feel and and how comfortable it is enhanced it has the haptic Kind kind of rumble effect happening in each of these arms and I felt like it's a pretty strong haptic kick to it so really like it. Another unique feature of this controller or is that it connects to the Internet via Wi fi directly. Okay so this isn't like Bluetooth to the crown cast. This is actually reaching out via Wi fi lie to the internet And they do that to cut down even further on latency so that does improve things. Someone for this preview that that I did the stadium controller actually operates wireless mode only when it's connected to the crown cast ultra in order to test with the The Pixel Book and the Pixel Excel which we'll talk about it in a second. It had to be wired. So I had to plug from the SPEC- poured directly into those devices. Google does say that wireless support for all of these platforms is coming early twenty twenty. Now's for third party controllers Stadia does support third party controllers like this one the dual shock four four controller that you might have hanging around although it's mixed support right now for different platforms. TV It's not gonNA work although it will work with Google chrome and some of the Pixel phone whether it's wired or via Bluetooth so the big concern among Gamers is whether a fully cloud based top Tier Council can go toe to toe with the expensive consoles that were used used to buying and plugging directly into our home theater systems. How does the Internet affect the gaming experience when it's all streaming from the cloud? Well I fired up stadium. Stadia on my pixelbook wirelessly getting twenty two megabits per second down ninety megabits per second up and I had some. Let's say serious stuttering issues. I was was playing mortal Kombat eleven. It's a fast paced button Masher and I could keep up even when the video stopped and started but only because I was just pressing buttons like a Madman There's no way that I'd be really happy if this was my everyday experience on my pixel xl. I enjoyed. I would say a pretty seamless experience. Of course I I was getting one hundred nine megabits per second down and one hundred sixty nine megabits per second up but everything felt really smooth. I was really enjoying this. Actually the phone mound Detaches the phone to the top of the controller and. I'm not so sure this phone. Mount is included in the founders edition it was outside of the founders addition edition box but it was in the box Google sent over. And it's a nice edition so maybe look out for that but the forced portrait mode that you see in the stadium stadia APP when you're selecting games that's weird definitely not ideal and finally on the included chrome cast ultra which was a wired connection pulling ninety megabits per second down and ten megabits per second up. Things looked crystal clear on our big four K.. Samsung display most of the time when four K.. was locked in everything was beautiful and impressive. But you just never knew when suddenly out of the blue everything would just down. Res- No one wants to lose a tournament. Due to some random network worked fluctuation and that's the reality cloud based streaming game content. I suppose another factor that could make or break. Stadia is latency and in my time playing these games. I've noticed little personally. In the way of latency that negatively affected my own game play Anthony Producer of hands on tech did some tests and number crunching running shadow the tomb raider on a PS four pro. And then also on the stadia to compare the latency between the two the PS four pro averaged one hundred twenty three milliseconds stadia average. Two hundred thirty nine milliseconds almost exactly two times. The amount of latency thing is I couldn't really notice a negative effect on my game play experience but I don't play competitively not saying there isn't a difference. I'm just saying the latency worked for me but twice. The latency is worrisome. Worrisome on paper so your mileage may vary okay so the jury is totally still out for me. I'm down with the promise of stadia leading Google handle the heavy be lifting and just showing up with a dumb browser or phone along with the stadia controller is pretty sweet from convenience standpoint but the big challenge for Google is making the experience seamless. Enough will gamers forgive stadia when it begins to stutter or throughout the course of a session video quality waffles sporadically between full four K.. Resolution Lucien and any number of inferior resolutions at random. I've had to remind myself. This is early the stadium founders. Edition is only shipping out to people who preordered months months ago to be in on the ground floor of something very new and different. The rest of the public should get access to this stuff early next year. And when that happens Google Google plans to have a number of features that were disabled for this early preview active and ready for the masses. But we'll gamers forgive and forget these early issues by the time time it's out for everyone something tells me that's asking a lot. I'm Jason.
Cancel Your Apple Arcade Trial Today If You’re Not Using It

Red Dead redemption 2 coming to PC
"And better news yeah EXAC right dead who is now out on peace and it's coming to Google Stadium Pony anywhere exactly on an airplane airplane there would not be good enough up their private jet if you had like a real but it's exciting to hear that finally it's coming to PC looking forward to seeing all the crazy mods that the PC he makes for red dead too and then of course looking forward to seeing how it performs on stadium because it looks like stadium is going to need some more heavyweights to help fill out their roster because do let me turn all has been delayed to March Twentieth Twenty Twenty as if Spring Twenty twenty needed another triple egg I know good Lord I mean yeah the front half of two thousand twenty is is just bonkers lockers bananas I say
"google stadia" Discussed on Daily Tech News Show
"In Los Angeles on Merit and Studio Theline I'm Sarah Lane from the still powered Oakland California I'm just in Robert Young and under shows producer be talking to your friends about is yeah but it's good now yeah like I don't know why I don't know you might be ridiculous but it's pretty good now I don't know I kinda barely notice smartphones this week Mara manufacturers all of the parts of the phone itself including the motherboards but also the packaging so this thing is the first smartphone manufacturer that can truly claim it's phones are entirely made in Africa lot of phones are assembled in Africa but these phones are made from the ground up in Africa the Mara X. Has Sixteen gigabytes of storage sells for one hundred twenty thousand two hundred fifty or one francs one hundred thirty bucks us the Marzi comes with thirty two gigabytes of storage and that one sells for one hundred seventy five thousand seven hundred fifty or one francs about one hundred ninety bucks. US puts them a bit more expensive than the most popular brand in large parts of Africa which is techno that's a Chinese brand been following the Chinese market at all you know the techno kind of become the dominant brand across the continent but I think or want to just wants to do this as a station but also they're hoping at least in the country of Rwanda there might be a little local pride causing people to plop down a little more on these I think it is remarkable will that Africa has for the last decade and a half been at the forefront of some of the most innovative uses of cell phones and credits and stuff like that granted oftentimes it comes because of hardship situations that they need to get around her instability in certain regions but I think that that Africa has always been something that I've I've looked at the great enjoyment innovated in made new headways in in all cell technology yeah if I don't know twenty years ago we we doing eighteen s we probably would have done a story about the first manufacturing plant in China to to make electronics and it sounded like this so you know keep an eye on this so go ahead keep an eye on for the twenty years from now the a weighty main topic that will have about our relationship with Africa yeah and make sure you're at the CO executive producer levels you can look at us look at this lineup five years from now on talk about it then hey a new survey conducted by off Com of one hundred fifty thousand mobile phone users in the UK between January and March this year shows that Liverpool residents have longer phone calls than residents of other major UK cities live bution spend an average of six minutes fifty one seconds on a single call Londoners came in second with forty percent less time spent on the well what are you guys talking about Liverpool Bradford folks get the shortest amount at three minutes and fifteen seconds however the surveys did not include calls made on skype WHATSAPP or other voip services notably the research found people predominantly use their phones over Wifi with mobile data services such as three G and four G use less than third of the time I at first I was like okay well this is sort of interesting I wonder what it is about this particular region and you know be either ah the the immigrant community maybe talking to people at home maybe that has to do with it until I was like Oh wait we're not talking about skype let's APP or any other service we're just talking about phone calls made over over over three G or four g networks within the UK hey that is a little bit harder to swallow our Wifi I mean a lot of the phone calls made over Wi fi but yeah we're we're talking about using the phone APP not using a messaging app they did they did point out in this study that the time spent on voice calls overall fell for the first time in two thousand eighteen and they think that's because more especially younger users are messaging they're not calling so I don't know if you include what's happened the voice calls whether it makes that much of a difference on this because it's it's a dying art to actually call someone as we've talked about before sometimes it's rude to just call I wanna you're supposed to text I and says it okay if I call you yeah all right so undoubtedly we are talking to people right now in Liverpool and apologies view had to have this podcast broken up by seven minute phone call from somebody but I need to know what do you guys notice that you guys call each other more longer than than people in other regions well nick with a C. says as a Brit Liverpudlians are the most people here and very kindly AH correct our pronunciation of Liverpudlian earlier but yeah apparently stereotype he's the most Nicholas Liverpudlians most hockey folk that is interesting by one it's I look at things like in the US would it would be something that we could equate here because I don't I mean I I would never be like well you know Justin rubber young those was floridians are just on the phone all day I mean we just done doug about something bad it's not it's if you look at this graph it's almost it flat I mean there is a difference between Bradford but it's a it's a nice even curve going through Leeds Birmingham Edinburgh Manchester Bristol Sheffield Cardiff all the way down to Bradford liver whoa is off the charts more I feel like yeah maybe Angelenos talk a little bit longer because of the California drawl or something Al right isn't a real stereotype that that we could we could point over here now and apologies to all the Liverpool for murdering Liverpool well liverpudlians if you have some insight please let us know feedback Ed Tech New Show Dot Com are moving on Bloomberg reports that Amazon uses teams help We are being to do this because all these stories that keep coming out are all in various different goalpost shifting like oh well these is these are are being reviewed by humans these are being a anonymous on some level there's just no standard for us and I think for consumers to know okay This company is being reckless this company's going above and beyond what they should be doing like yeah what's the standard because to me this is very clearly like yeah only if you didn't catch it folks only when you send your clip to Amazon for troubleshooting is a person employed by Amazon look at it and use it to upgrade the machine learning that runs this this is not it's doing it without your permission and the only smoking gun Bloomberg hasn't story is but it doesn't say it's a human like okay did I guess you expect that it would always be a machine but now I don't I don't know that that's not bad so yeah hey folks if you want to get all the tech headlines each about five minutes be sure to subscribe to daily tech headlines Dot com earlier this month apple rejected the APP which came up live which crowd sourced locations of police and tear gas in Hong Kong and displayed them on a map we talked about that then last week apple changed decision and decided to how the APP to be published in the APP store and Hong Kong we talked about that Tuesday a state run newspaper in China called Apple an accomplice in Hong Kong protests for allowing that to be published about that yesterday now apple has removed the APP from the store as well as a mirror APP called backup H K previous installed version still work as does a web based version of Hong Kong map live but apple flip-flopped here's why apple put out a statement saying many concerned customers Hong Kong contacted the company about the APP and the APP displays police locations and we have verified with the Hong Kong cybersecurity and Technology Crime Bureau that the APP has been used to target Ambush Police Threaten Public Safety and criminals have used it victimize residents in areas where they know there is no law enforcement so apple saying this is being used to commit crimes times that violates our terms we're pulling the APP also apple CEO. Tim Cook sent an email to apple employees that now leaked out saying that while the information the APP was on its own benign the company had credible information from the Hong Kong police as well as apple users that the APP was being used quote malicious lead to target individual officers violence and to victimize individuals and property were no police are present this use put the APP in violation of Hong Kong law. similarly widespread abuse clearly violates our APP store guidelines barring personal harm so that email kind of narrows it says maybe this was being used to target industry Joel Police people not just saying the police are here you might want to avoid that street which it definitely was being used for two but apple saying it was also being used for this other thing Tim Cook's L. continues to say national and international debates will outlive us all and well important they do not govern the facts in this case we thoroughly reviewed them and we believe the decision best protects our users apple's not alone nor is h k map developers of the absent moderators were deleting content that solicited criminal activity and band repeated attempts to post such so the developers are saying this was targeting an individual we would have put a stop to but apparently apple that's not good enough for apple also muddying this issue apple removed the courts news APP from the APP store in China not in Hong Kong because the Chinese government said it violated local laws of course website has been blocked in China as they don't think it should have a separate flag in the EMOJI set even though it's a standard and if you're thinking well that's all apple Google pulled a game called the revolution of our time teams which is part of a slogan from the Hong Kong protests from the Google play store now keep in mind Google play does not operate in China the game let users play Hong Kong oh testers Google said that it was quote prohibiting developers from capitalizing on sensitive events such as attempting to make money from serious ongoing conflicts or.

Hands-On with the New Nintendo Switch Lite
"NINTENDO's already getting ready for the holiday season. The Japanese video video game maker introduced a strip down version of its switch console on Friday. It's the two hundred dollars which light and it's lighter. It's also smaller and fits right in your pocket but unlike the irregular three hundred dollars switch it doesn't connect to a TV set here to talk about this latest device as well as what else is on the horizon for Nintendo is one of our tech editors in New York. WSJ's Bodey tway welcome. Hi Tania you don't I'm great so talk to me about the light specifically who who does Nintendo have this in mind for who who is this console for casual gamers in a in a couple of words so the switch light is a sort sort of a stripped-down cheaper version of of the switch model the switch initially came out a couple of years ago and did pretty well I have have memories of handheld devices like Gameboy I had my game boy and it was it's brings brings back memories so oh the the switch light might do that since it doesn't connect to television and it's obviously designed to be portable but the stripped down version is expected to do really really well. NPD's said said in a prediction it could be the top selling console of this year in the US and so there's there's a Lotta people. There's a lot of expectations a lot of hope for Nintendo to really get to casual gamers to to try to get this device even in light of significant competition right right and you know it's it's following this new theme that seems to be in place from all of the gaming companies remind us who Nintendo's contending with here yes so the the the just like the battle content Israel and so trying to get gamers to play it's both on console off console so with console market you obviously have. Sony and Microsoft being among its chief competitors but you know off the console and you look at mobile gaming. Obviously you have the likes of apple which Apple Arcade cade is just rolling out. You have Google Stadia They're going to have an offering soon. Google itself also is going to have a subscription subscription based aced offering that it's going to roll out later this year for mobile and you know and beyond that you just have the the the list of other you know mobile. We'll games that you can that are that are free to play and I think the biggest thing for for Nintendo obviously wants to make its mark with casual gamers but there's this you know the the bigger issue in the market is just how can you how are these console providers are How do you get people to. How do you get people to play and convince them? that you know that you're going to have that you have good stuff that you kind of have to have this device to to us and to be entertained and that's something that obviously their are high expectations for. Nintendo with this device but it's it's a big question of obviously will can they deliver right and it's all about you know expanding the brands global presence and I understand that goes into theme parks and all kinds of things. Can you talk about the bigger picture intendo similar to other like think the Disney model with Nintendo you WanNa. Have Your your properties in your extended as much as you can so we're talking about theme parks. You're talking about looking for opportunities opportunities to license your. Ip and these are all things that that Nintendo is looking to do because obviously it understands that you know you don't win just by console you don't you don't win just by the switch alone you have an. Nintendo has a long history of of characters like Mario and you no in folks who you know people have been playing for. You know you have the ability to to benefit from these content licensing deals from all these like these legendary characters so it finding ways to to put Mario and the likes of other people elsewhere is it oh I guess the characters elsewhere is is is something that Nintendo ndo in a lot of other companies are looking to

Opera launches a 'gaming browser' with Twitch integration
"Opera is launching a gaming browser with twitch integration. Now. You might be wondering what is it gaming browser? Opera PM, the Jackie Cassamba says in opening of the upper GI introduction video while fair question I thought when the Norwegian browser company mentioned a concept was something kind of, like Google stadium with remote game streaming. No turns out a gaming browser in this instance, at least is more about providing a custom browser for PC gamers, rather than a browser that does the heavy lifting for gaming itself. Instead, the system is more interested in minimizing system requirements as gamers game. So the browsers central feature is a g x control panel, which lets users determine how much of the system, CPU and ram are allotted to the browser. Now the being game can say stream content from twitch while playing. Without slowing their computer to a crawl obviously. For those of us who have been streaming for awhile are quite familiar with the frustrations of trying to have a web, browser open and then play video game as well. And going, why is it? So slow this browsers supposed to take care of that running a game might require a lot of effort from your machine even more. So if you're streaming while you play in it was. Let's see nouncement was released tied to today's e three announcement before projects gamers, often shut down their brothers in order to not slow down into gaming experience. We came up with the g control feature to make people's games run more smoothly without requiring them to compromise on what they do on the web, and look at that they got a video that goes along with

"google stadia" Discussed on Android Central Podcast
"Podcast episode as you can tell it showed up in your feet at a weird time on a weird day. Sometime this all? And so we got a bunch of information, so we wanted to go ahead and talk about it. I'm joined fi- gaming editor Jennifer lock. Google Stadia: All Details You Need To Know
"Kind of dropped a whole bunch, more information on just before three starts, or stadia, the streaming service that we originally knew as product stream and his grown into this, this own monster its own creature that's going to be delivering video games to us. Sometime this all? And so we got a bunch of information, so we wanted to go ahead and talk about it. I'm joined fi- gaming editor Jennifer lock. I think is actually sexually your first time on the central. Yeah. I've never been on it for so, well, this is going to be a lot of fun. No pressure anything. It's a lot of pressure. And also joining us again to talk about stadia again is actually Carly lachey from all of our sites. Yes. Hi. So we got a ton of information today. I figured we were kinda dive right in and see what parts. We liked and didn't like in what we still don't know about yet to, to kinda sort this out. I guess the I guess, maybe the most important thing is the price seemed to be like the big thing that people weren't super sure about, like they had seen some of the details about the streaming service, but they like seemed like the biggest question was how much is this gonna cost me? Yes, actually, because it's supposed to be like a kind of free for all platform, ten dollars fair. I think but I wouldn't buy game separately, if I'm also paying ten dollars a month. I don't want to pay more for a game. Yes. So, so the pricing details are, are a little on the confusing side, their stadia pro which is the big thing that they're pushing today for peop. To preorder starting starting right now. And it's it's ten dollars a month, and you get access to a couple of free games when when you start off. You just get access to the one free game, which we'll talk about a little later and then there's going to be more added as part of that subscription. But then you can also buy games kind of Allah cart. Whatever game you're excited about we don't know what the prices of those games individually are. But you can buy those games and all of those games are playable. If you have the right internet connection at four K six firms per second on a ton of different things. We originally thinking this was just going to be on the chrome cast ultra start. But it turns out that it's going to be the chrome cast ultra, it's going to be just about anything with chrome web, browser and the pixel three and perhaps more surprising, the pixel three the kind of ultra cheap pixel, that was just released at Google. Yo is also going to support at launch with more. Phones kind of expected later, and there's also something to note that I think with stadia pro this grip shin you get like some free games in some discounted games. They mentioned exclusive discounts on some games later, but didn't really break down, what that was. I mean that could be pretty cool. I soon as similar to what a PlayStation, plus does currently. Yes, so similar to similar setup there, where you can get kind of some some discounts on games at probably older games where the discount isn't going to be quite as big as the although I guess, probably to start off. They're going to they're going to try and get people excited about a couple of games. But separate from stadia pro is something that will be available. Later will not be available at launch in November. Is stadium base and stadium base is just the ability to purchase a game play stream it from from anywhere. And that there's no there's no monthly service included in that. But you are only limited you're limited to ten eighty p streaming as thank with the parole plan. You get like surround sound or something, which you don't get with the base. Yes. Five months around sound, five point once around somewhere. Whereas you get a stereo audio with the with stadium base, so the stadium basis something where if you wanna pick up a game you can play anywhere. But if you want the best possible experience, the they're gonna charge, you this ten bucks a month. And it's ten bucks a month in the US twelve bucks a month in Canada. But it's supposed to be the kind of the equivalent of tenuous dollars in fourteen different countries when it launches yet, I think it's interesting to have the base launch a lot like sometime in twenty twenty and a lot later actual date. Yeah. It's, it's obviously like their tests. They're doing a sort of rollout launch something more gradual. I think like the fourteen countries is also just a way to like really tests like all the latency stuff in the actual product before they really go wide because while while it's available in fourteen countries in the US is one of those countries you can't play in Guam, or Hawaii, which is they're just like internet connections in those places are just not great. So trying to guarantee any kind of quality in those places is a real challenge, regardless of what you know, hardware. You've got. Yeah. Plus, there's no there's nothing so far for any Asian countries either right? Yeah. So there's, there's a lot of limitations for, for where, but but, you know, fourteen countries seems like a stronger role out that I think I was initially expecting a the, the original test for project stream was was located just in the US. You couldn't do it outside. Of the US at all. So it's cool that they are at least aware that they're global audience wants to do this as well. That it's not just a US product launch which is something kind of struggles with a lot of times, you know, releasing things in the US first, and then, and then maybe getting to Canada and the UK, you know, six months, or a year later, I would have hoped they would have tested that out during products dream for a worldwide launch because they kind of sold it as this global thing, where they have all their servers, everywhere. But it's just like or teen countries launch. Yes, I mean, a big part of the, the launch of the Carleen, I went to GD see they, they were talking about how it's basically proximity to Google data centers. Right. So like the countries that they listed these are all countries were Google data centers exist, which means that stadia servers, can exist and likely already do exist in those places. So being able to do that kind of local compression, streaming stuff in country. I suspect a lot easier than than, you know, the product stream, thing was just US focused and just, you know, chrome based so that it could happen in the US servers. So they're testing. I totally get that. I just think some people will be confused because when it was first now, the Google stadia. They really sold it as like, hey, anywhere in the world want to play though. That was a big thing that Carly, I noted when they did the original announcement was that the hype level was just through the roof, right? It was just it was just this, you know, you're going to be able to play anything anywhere, and it's going to change what gaming. And, and so this is this announcement. What they're calling stadia connect with. They're gonna do apparently multiple of throughout the year as these kind of streamed announcements is that kind of coming back down to reality yet. I think it's interesting that they're doing it that way. It's the way that Nintendo's kind of been doing it for a while now. And the institute, working well for them out, Google staling in have to imagine other people will follow, especially now that, like, like presenting everything. Ether is in the thing anymore, right? Yeah. I mean that's. Shown up just XBox, just just Microsoft micro. You walk in. And there's just a giant Microsoft booth all its embassy want. Yeah, it's just Microsoft and Bethesda side by side in the hall. It's everything's great. So there's a to, to get setup. Actually, I missed this as part of the youth. There's a founder package to sign up available starting today, and they made it very clear that there's only a limited number of these refuse to tell anybody, what that number is I suspect that it's, it's gonna run for a couple of weeks and then and then just not available anymore. There's a unique color to the stadium controller which originally was was shown off in three colors, black white. And this kind of limi- Minty green with a savvy called with Sabi, which I eight that color, you said, you preordered I will say, I did, and I've held each one of these controllers in my hand and I really liked that color in hand. It's not it doesn't look super great pictures, but I really liked it when I was holding it, so that I it might just be that the just like, the, the highlighter yellow accents, under the controllers really got me. I don't know what it is. But this did not look that great TIMMY, now. And. I get that. Yeah. So there's, there's also a dark blue controller that's going to be a part of this limited edition, which also looks very nice has armed accents on it, which is similar to the orange accents that are on some of the other controllers, but the, the dark blue kind of offsets a nice way and it's apparently only going to have this, this color available for, for this launch crew, you get the controller which is normally seventy bucks and the chrome cast ultra which is also normally seventy bucks three months of stadia for you three months of stadium for a friend. Which is so nice to give someone access to stadium, but not have a controller for them. Just kind of a separate thing, and then. Access to early registration for your username on stadia, which is obviously super important for your future as a prolific game. Streamer. Absolutely. And, and then early access to, to one of the you know the the one game that you're gonna get at launch something like just the hardware. The, the kid itself is one hundred twenty nine dollars, which in and of itself is cheaper than buying the controller on the chrome cast Alterra separately. Plus, you get the, the three months of pro so that's thirty bucks, right there. Yeah. You get three months on top of that. And then three months that you can gift to someone else that they have made it clear, what, the, the gifting price is going to be I assume it also just be the ten bucks a month. I liked that. They're starting out with a gifting idea because I you know, I have family members that I would probably gift stadia to, you know, but, but, you know, even if it's not something that I end up playing myself, so. So for them to start off with a gifting concept, is something that I like, especially given Jen, and my recent frustration with trying to gift things through the PlayStation store and how just it just doesn't exist anymore. It's also a good kind of marketing tactic like as a way for people to kind of spread the word about stadium and have people, maybe try it for free. And then the ice whom they hope that allow these people who have the buddy pass will purchase stuff of their own or get a buddy pass for somebody else, or something like that

"They did the the streamer montage, which is my new favorite thing by we. But it was about. I think it was guy in the cheese puff nothing happened. I saw trials even like that. Montage, just like, even that's sanitary. Just for everyone's reference a game. At does have a latency test the digital foundry video or it's euro game. Okay. I haven't seen any how how is it? Well, digital a lot to do be hard for me to translate easily. But if you want to read more about it. Okay. So the thing is like at sixty f one frame is. I think what twelve milliseconds. So it's it's really down to like how many frames behind you are. So you hit your stick? And then there's a gap of time where nothing happens weekly stadium is latency is higher than a PC or an XBox. Yes. Well, that's that's obvious. So I was gonna shouldn't be that was trying to match. I if there's no goal is to be better than on live your goals to be better than the XBox. You have in your house that you can stream trend because Microsoft does this where you can stream your XBox earpiece? And I gave James shit for this all the time because he was like look what you can do. Mike looks like garbage in a run slow. See this. Let me see it's like it. And I try and just recently because we talked about this last week when I was like, oh, you can stream your PC. Now to your XBox couldn't get to work. They claim it works. I still haven't I kind of gave up on the whole thing. But, but then I was like, well, at least I saw the option to stream the other way. So try playing a halo three match on the message collection. It was playing in my living room, but a stream into my PC, and there was very noticeable lag. Because then I stepped into the other room, and I was so playing on the TV less lack that's in my home. Yeah. That's on my network. And you're telling me with the power of nodes, you have figured this out that you can give me some super internet. That's going to get rid of that. I don't believe it. Well, no. I mean, and that's not what according to euro gamer. That's not true. Yeah. Basically like a PC had the lowest latency and the next box one x the second lowest latency, and then the rest or high Google stadia was high, and it's it's like a hundred and eighty eight milliseconds, I if they want to compete with consoles, it has to be the same latency, that's almost that's almost ten frames, which even internally symptoms game engines can have two or three frames of lag. And then like HDTV that's on on game owed can have God. Like two hundred milliseconds just in itself. So and yeah, it depends on your monitor and it depends on input devices. It depends on a lot of stuff, but confuse them Ponta MIA'S, casual games aren't gonna cat. They're not gonna notice not a casual game is the kind of people who have really fucking fos internet in the first place to be able to run this. No. But I think there is a factor there like there there is an there is something like, I think everyone knows lag. Whether they do or not, which is I think why some people react like there's something about counterstrike about tetris about quake about doom twenty sixteen zoom that are just fast and responsive and people I think respond to that that just like reaction of hitting a button and instantly. Something happens versus hitting a button and just a fraction of a second. Something later happens. I think when it comes to marketability that might also be an issue with stadia if if they try to use it as a marketing angle, and you get this kind of floaty weird feeling game. I think assassin's creed hides it really well because it was built to be like an HD game on HDTV. So it was built around all that with it's kind of innovation systems man, man it. Yeah. If you try to play competitive shooter on stadia, and that's the marketing wing four, and then there's really fuzzy and unless they feed you an easy match with. No, you're kind of like g mobile, but did but their whole their whole thing out regal. Sure. I don't think whoever they want great in the EU..
"google stadia" Discussed on Kotaku Splitscreen
"And we are back. We are here live at GD see of the game dollars conference in San Francisco. My name is Jason schreier, and I'm joined once again by Maddie Meyers. I am still here, and we are very pleased to have the one and only I guess it's fair to call you a game Dev legend, formerly of Sony and Microsoft where you worked on the PlayStation AmEx box. And now, it's your hat trick with Google Savio, the one and only stadia man, I keep doing that hires in. How are you doing great? How many times have you been called it Google stevia? That's I wanna know. I keep calling stadia as easy a, but I keep calling see via. Well, no one has done. Skew fell we have Sony questions Sony on answer questions after today's thing. The biggest question that everybody is asking is. So this thing the streaming platform that you guys have announced is very dependent on internet connection and on having a good internet connection. Order streams play them, which is good for those of us in the bay area or New York where we are. What is your solution for people who don't have great band with bandwidth caps or who don't have great internet speeds? What do they do? So we were able to test a lot of this with our project stream test late last year starting back in October. And to get ten eighty p sixty frames per second record a proximity twenty five megabits per second. In fact, we use less than that. But that's where we put our recommended limit at. But with innovations that we've made on the stream aside on the compression side since then when we launch we will be. Able to get to four K but only raised that bandwidth to about thirty megabits per second. So if you have less bandwidth will give you a less, we'll give you a low resolution, and this is up to the user, it's up to you. Yes. It's up to the us kind of in the middle of nowhere. And I have a inner connection. I say all right. I'm gonna play ten eighty thirty Francis. We of that for you in the and the background, and we will only offer up to you, the the appropriate band with for the infrastructure that you have got at. So if I have bad internet, I will get to choose, and I'll only have a few limited options. Yeah. Nothing. The great thing about the internet is that as time goes on everyone's capability rises. You know, if I think back to when I first got access to the internet like one megabit per second. Was that felt like I was breaking the world speed record. But then that has continued to innovate overtime not just because of what Google doing, but because of I ESP s. and because of competition and a lot of good things everyone benefits from that. I think that will continue to be the case and then longer term not immediately. But longer them some innovations around cellular technology. I think we'll start to to help with that. And so I think we'll start seeing five g Komen ze focus in relatively Schule. And yeah, but even then it's like data throttling is always an issue and having to worry about your your eyes Ps data caps that seems like it's going to be a consistent issue for you guys to face. Have you talked to ISP's about finding ways to deal with that? We we observe over the history of streaming technologies both from music to movies and TV is that the only piece of being really good at keeping up with the demands of the the uses and keeping up with the demands of modern streaming technologies. And there's no reason why that won't continue to innovate. One one thing that you guys did not talk about today is price. What does the service cost users and are people going to buy games, there'd be some sort of subscription? Am I gonna spend sixty dollars on whatever game to get it on my Google stadia? We chose very carefully GD is the announced point stadium because we wanted to share technology platform vision with the most important starting point journey which is the game develop. Other words, you're not telling us we're going to talk about it today via further down the road. We will talking great detail about that in the summer. Okay. In the summer e-3 in the summer in the summer..
