The coal was put in by a slightly panicked young operator. Who when pressed for a reason for the malfunction could only offer the maker apply. I'm not sure. I've never been here. Before upon investigating it was discovered that one of the pumps that channeled thousands of lasers of water around the artificial river had failed lowering the water level at the tail end of the ride. This meant that when the ride ross reached this point they would settle and come to a stop on a set of support rails. The roth would not reach the conveyor belt that would hold it up into the station so that riders could step off. And the riles were fought through low for anyone to rate shop to the station for help. At the time. Dream guidelines only required to staff members to supervise the thunder river rapids ride on the day of the breakdown. The more experienced attendant state at the station to assist patrons in getting on and off ramps and when the problem code they will on hand to lend whatever assistance. They could to the maintenance stuff in the control room for. The ride was a newly christened pocket attendant. Only days into the job that morning they had turned up to work and discovered only upon clocking in for the day that they would man the rapids dreamworld management prided themselves on the simplicity of that control systems which was not say that the control panels themselves particularly easy to use pressure gauges separate pump controls flow regulators. An overwhelming amount of red lights resulted in the challenge. Even for an electrical engineer but they were shortcuts and the drain won't tame had largely reduced the day to day operation of the thunder river rapids to two buttons. When all by the new recruit about the lodge poli labeled button to one side. The supervising attendant responded. Don't worry about that button. No one uses it often performing what amounted to pushing a ray set button on the pumps staf had the thunder river rapids back in action and patrons continued to enjoy that time until the system failed again. Two hours later this was a frustrating and untenable position for dreamworld that premier ride arguably the most popular attraction at the park was out of commission much to the chagrin of park visitors. Who had been waiting. That tone in line the mandate was clear. Get the rapid back in action as soon as possible. Whatever the quickest means of restoring the pumps the maintenance staff needed to get to a while. This was happening. The pox safety manager at the bob tan was put in mind of an incident. He observed two years prior during an examination of the ride. In the same circumstances an empty raf had become stock on the riles at the bottom of the conveyor belt when another raft was propelled into it from behind by the artificial current ten observed the first frost lunch violently up onto its edge and very nearly flipped completely ovo. Ruby iragi that family visiting the gold coast from these stralia capital territory for a wedding celebration and had decided to devote a day to dreamworld just ahead of them with a low family cindy husband matthew and that two children enjoying a family holiday as the next raw pulled up. The lowest stepped close on as a senior attendant gestured for the full papal ahead of them to embark cindy nausea that their family would not be able to fit on the raf together briefly. She thought they might wait for the next roth to arrive but turned to consider the people in line behind her. Cindy decided not to force kate luke and bear to wait longer than necessary. She encouraged her husband to take that dole on the ride. That had just pulled in cindy amazon would join kate's family. When the next roth drives and so it was that cindy low and her ten year old son cake good child and her twelve year. Old daughter luke dorsett and versa. Iragi voted the thunder river. Rapid rides together them. They would not reach the end on the final stage of the ride as the roth departure that convey that would drag the roughed up the slope to the station. The pumps failed for the third time. The water levels dropped quickly and under other circumstances this man the by the time. The ross reached the mechanism. It would settle onto the support rails and be unable to move with the usual spayed while annoying. The group had no real concerns about waiting a little longer to disembark. Unfortunately there was already a roth stranded on both support rails they collided both ross. Pivoted upwards to a ninety degree angle. The stationary wrought fell back down to its horizontal position. But the edge. Of the raf. Carrying cindy kate. Luke and rues. Beth got caught in a gap in the convey mechanism which pulled the raft further causing it to tip backwoods. End over end. The rides harnesses would not designed to secure passengers in these circumstances in the event of a roth flipping upside down elsewhere in the river. It is imperative that patrons be able to easily slip phrase so that they are not held underwater suspended at such an extreme angle. The family members began to full from the raw into the shallow water below through the gaps in the wooden sleepers directly into the mechanism of the conveyor belt itself. Only the two children managed to hold onto their harnesses. Two of the victims were pinned to the conveyor belt by the raft and likely drowned the other two were caught by the conveyor belt and pulled into the gears of the mechanism. The panicked attendant at the controls had frozen completely on shore of what to do grabbing her walkie talkie she tried to get the attention of the masa control room to awesome to shut the ride down. This took precious moments of the family. Below did not have the masa control board did not have such a a kill switch. The thunder river rapids ride only a slow stop which would allow the ride to gradually wind down until coming to a halt. This too was time. The family did not have a later. Investigation into the tragedy would identify the conspicuous button at the bride controls. The young attendant was told to war. It was the emergency stall dreamworld. I i'd team rushed to the side from the supervising attendant screamed for help over the radio. One of them. A former paramedic named shame green jumped into the water as soon as he arrived straining to move the rocks in a desperate hope to bring someone out of the water rolling onto name. It was met with the trauma and juicing site three of the passengers that bodies court and disfigured by machine beneath them at this point grain knew that was no help that would make a difference pot crews joined by emergency service personnel. Who spent hours trying to work out a recovery plan when patrons were cleared from the area maintenance teams opened the drainage on the ride to allow the bodies of the full victims to be afraid only as the water level dropped were. The rescuers met with the full extent of the horror of the final moments. The coroner's report would eventually say to the cause of death was severe trauma. Grievous wounds to the head chest and midsection. The two children who had clung to their lives to the states on the raft were pulled to safety by pox staf. Once the ride had been shut down other nearby family members swept them up and they cried together over their loss. Shane green remembers the screams of the look that day though screamed still white him at night. He has been unable to work. They hoped that with a more complete understanding of the accident. They would be able to put it behind them and focus on moving ahead. It was far from ovo drain walden. It's corporate manages the auden group rebound to experience a reckoning. The police investigation losted for almost one year. At the end of that time no single person could be held responsible for the failure that devastated so many families in light of this. No criminal charges were filed and the police handed over the materials for the coroner's investigation to begin this process loss of nearly three years but from the earliest stages those in charge knew exactly where to divert that farkas a thorough search of the pox records indicated that there were no appropriate standards for safety procedures. Essential training or ongoing maintenance. The turmoil that had began with the very first change of ownership had carried forward and no systems for accurate filing or record keeping. Were put in place though. The more examination of the rise themselves tried. How haphazardly things we've dealt with on a regular basis in the years of its operation. No safety regulation inspection had been conducted on the thunder river rapids and government orders had contributed to the problem by signing off on authorization. Forms without proper review. Modifications made over the years had not been inspected either. The controls of the ride itself came under scrutiny being labeled as confusing and poorly laid out system. The issue of the emergency stop button was of course of great interest. The coroner's office who ultimately determined that the entire tragedy could have been avoided at any moment. Right up until the ross collided. If that button had been pressed in the end the entire organization was culpable queensland corrina. James mcdougal made clear in his report. Such a culture can exist only when leadership from the board down a careless in respect of safety that cannot be allowed. The recommendation following this inquest was that the queensland office of industrial relations consider the dream mode parent company. All the families who by this time considering legal action this never came to fruition as auden settled for undisclosed amounts with nearly everybody involved publicly. The promise was made whatever the recommendations that came out of the report dream world would say them action and put in place in december of two thousand twenty odd and leisure themselves contacted workplace health and safety queensland to inform the muslim neom mrs onsite one of them maintenance stuff. Bailey avoided ben crushed by fooling three-ton on from the pandemonium while they were conducting repes- around the same time patron was hurt while on the triple vortex waterslide although they were cleared of any serious injury on the same day. It is very likely. That audience was proactive about informing work health and safety queensland in order to stay ahead of any negative media attention which may have indicated that new regulations and standards may not have been as forthcoming as initially promised. These incidents followed a far more serious one in the month prior were an eight year. Old girl received serious internal injuries on the fully six waterslide. The reaction to this incident suggests that staf still have little to no idea of how to respond to a real crisis event when confronted with a traumatized excessively. Blading child stop could barely be ralph's enough to point to the first aid station. The child later quieter surgeries for injuries. "Or go to columbia. You go to kmart you could buy as much as you. Can you know something. Some of the film was cheaper stuff in summit with the kodak stuff was the really great stuff. Yeah so you just really go out and just shoot as much as you could. And we'd end up with these reels and we bring them back and show him and have fun with them. So what you were doing at that point between the ages of like thirteen to nineteen. That was enough to make your mother think that you might pursue this to send you off to usc yet she. She thought that because you know my dad was very strict he he was much older. My mother in he came through the depression. He was very Like goodchild is seen heard and and he. When i'd get out a school he'd come down to the doctor's office and sit in the waiting room and on in the waiting room so he could look down through the hallway from his chair in his office. In watch me study because the head be observed her. I couldn't possibly do it on my own. So that sort of thing and my mom is always the creative type and she always believed in me and it was like you can do whatever you want to do. And then you go out and do good things. This is like nineteen seventy six. He said yeah. That's when i went to. Usc was in nineteen seventy. So what was it like here. In nineteen seventy six. The cars were different. You know there was. There wasn't near as much traffic. I moved here in eighty eight permanently in the traffic. It was not that bad when i moved tornado eight. Now it's horrendous you know yeah. There were some things that were here then. That aren't here now but the cinerama dome is still here. I saw logan's run when it was released in the cinerama dot. Org that's cool. That was pretty cool. Cody was there. I remember going to l. cody. And but i stayed in the dormitories down in at usc and of dorm call marx tower. Which in the actual cinema school was in a little plywood hut out in the middle of the park in between marks tower. In place it was it was around sort of donut. Shape building in the center was a courtyard and it was basically the that was the cinema school of that time. They hadn't built the big fancy when the him now and they had areas alexis and things like that and so we go in. Check those out and we could shoot things with those and two days a week. We'd go to universal and we go. We went to albert whitlock s- workshop where he talked with us about how you did. Like eighty five percent of the hindenburg with glass shots. Wow and he showed his glass shots from the birds and from a lot of different movies he was originally from england and they had him up in an attic in one of the stages in universal and that was his workshop and he was up there with the mitchell cameron. He'd he'd sit there and eat paint away. He do these glass shots. Matte paintings i now. He's kind of lost art now. Oh he was like the best he was like. You know now they do digital matte paintings but at that time it was a real sheet of glass and he'd bring it out on the set and he wanted up and look at it and paint and just the parts needed. And then you'd leave the rest of it clear so that you could shoot threaten. Do these things and yeah. This was back when special effects was a real hands on art yet. I answer like pre industrial light magic. Even oh yeah much before that and they still use optical printers and then people started computerizing these printers and there was a company in atlanta..

"Welcome to foundations. Friday twenty five. Let them grow up some more. What does that mean. Well i took this analogy from one of my favorite movies of all time. Glory which is about the fifty fourth massachusetts which was in all black regiment led bri a white officer robert. Good shaw as you can imagine. There were some growing pains and they were training folks who were slaves and field hands and some who had picked up dead bodies and so pulling together this group to make them soldiers and get him ready and robert gould. Shaw wanted to train them. Appropriately in the end this movie based but the but actual as far as this regiment existing in this part the movie shaw friend. A free black man from the north from in massachusetts was going through training. It wasn't a great soldier. He was he was very smart guy but not royal luttig and he was being trained by this Sergeant major this irishman and they were practising bayonet attacks and the sergeant major set attack me And scholz friend attacked them. The surgeon major took the musket away from him. Hit the person with him in the face and of course upsetting he said. Hey no shame son got up and there was a problem. He didn't get up. And then there were some other scuffle that happened with denzel washington's character who was such a great character that movie and positive forget his name. But who's kind of the the tough guy the rebel but the rebel. Meaning you know he was used to slavery and rebelling and but also became a leader and inspiration on fighting back and so can't recommend this movie enough. I don't know how many times i watched the tape. Yes i'm that old but after that there was an interaction where ronald goodchild. Who was a colonel in charge of the regiment. Called the sergeant major over and said you know the gist of it was basically reach harlem and the sergeant major. Who's our said the boy's your friend izzy and shaul says yes. We grew up together. And the sergeant major says let him grow up some more so in this context it was to grow up to get ready for battle to go fight or die or kill in war in the context that i'm talking about today the i think about. Let's say start with your kids. The whole you know your kids need to be allowed to grow up a little bit to tie their own shoes to skin their knee to wrestle with each other to scrap a little bit to figure out some hard things without us constantly hovering over them or doing everything for them or they won't be as prepared. I think there's a similar line for project teams and as project managers. We have perhaps through. The project ties portion of our time together. Kind of coddled or optimize or streamline things to get a product ready and then we hit the real world we face hardship so sometimes it's not so bad for the team including us as emc face hardship to have difficulty to face challenges. It can actually reveal like we've talked about like you all are we're out there. You can test to things and then you put two hundred things out in the world and it's different because there's more variables while sometimes this hardship this us growing up some more makes us all better but sometimes it messaging has to be clear. Maybe not you know the but a bayonet to the face but maybe a direct message to say. Hey this is the direction we are in and this is what we will do full stop so sometimes we need to have that message that tells us directly or indirectly. Let's all grow up some more. I think you all for helping grow this show. And i hope you're having a great foundations friday out there. Hope you're building on whatever platform or process that you're doing. Thank you for following the show on apple. I tunes spotify all places that podcasts are.

And i remember the smack wanna get hit so i was just like all right. Ma'am well that's interesting. One hundred percent of the folks in a chat room. No bathroom is not. I just think that that's the way we were raised. We there is no way. I would never think of raising my voice talking back being disrespectful to any not. Only my mother and father like my uncle's about us at the mom who they were down south. One day. I got my own. Who started beating on me and my mother and father standing right there in the child. That was your parents. Billy this up. I think it really feels good on a on a wednesday that there's a hundred percent consists in the chat room that us grown folks out here. You ain't got no outs that little bitty woman asks with was in the forecast fig. Nope never did it. And and you know as a team like especially when you didn't that that that range from like eleven thirteen seventeen eighteen when you feel like you could talk like that. I still know now time. I love house. I never my sisters and brothers get him help but my mom good because i was i was spoiled brat too so i i had. My mouth was ridiculous in my sister. She's kinda raised me like it was real tight in a year. She was snatched my little tail. What about you don't like that. She was the bad one and the one who now dumped it with the worst some of our job. We appreciate your. Thanks so much for answering questions. And if i might have just a moment for a personal plug here do it. Last year i narrated and produced an audiobook so if you like listening to my voice on atc you might want to check this out. So it's a it's a great win win win. Done a little bit of a sad news here. just recently. Mid february The christian recording artist carman passed away. Very very sad was due to some complications of surgery. He'd gotten some infection he had also been dealing with cancer for several years in con- into remission in sort of recovered with an it came back recently and So it was very sad. I'm a huge carmen fan. And you're probably wondering. Why are you talking about this on atc. It's because as roy knows a lot of his songs were very There were story song cinematic and and he used sound effects in them especially in his God of all nations medley where he's traveling around the world and he had sound effects of when he goes to germany. Have the dog barking. And you know all of this stuff and so he he was a great storyteller in addition to his wonderful worship music that is sung in churches all across the country and probably in other countries as well but he also had a tie in to audio drama because years ago he did a series of audio dramas stories for kids called yoga kids and they are really fun stories. They're musicals but they are similar in style to maybe some of the salty songbook stuff or kobe. The computer where you have scenes of audio drama insert interspersed with songs. They're very much meant for younger kids but they are really great. And in in fact i mean. Carmen wasn't the bad actor. He did a really good job. Yeah he his voice. Different things different characters he was he was really good. Yeah he he played himself in them but he was more of a. I guess you could say A larger than life version of himself in in these stories and so links in the show notes to those. If you have younger kids the probably enjoy them. The music is fine and they have of course a great message in them as well. So it's it's a sad thing to his passing but it ties into. We talk about audio drama here. Yeah and i thought it was worth mentioning. And if you haven't heard you should listen to the interview that jd with carbon. Is that available. It is yes. Excellent excellent interview so go check that out. Well we are absolutely thrilled to have will ryan and katie. Lea on the show today. This has been a long time coming and it.
