Catholic Gonzaga Prohibits Pro-Life Event With Liz Wheeler

"Gonzaga university prohibits pro life event with Liz Wheeler. Zags, that's those who go to Gonzaga or zags. Zags for life wanted to host Catholic pro life speaker Liz Wheeler with assistance from young America's foundation, but the campus ministry office denied the request. Grant haberse a student and board member of Gonzaga's pro life zags for life. Told the college fix that's this wonderful website about college news. But he was notified the event was canceled by an email from director of mission and ministry Luke lavin. Luke lavin. Wasn't Superman's, what was Superman's girlfriend's name? Lois lane. Yeah, LL, they were all LL in Superman. My Friends, I have never said anything less significant than what I just said now. The ministry director said he was unaware that the group was working with YA F on the event. Haberse are already had received approval from the center for student involvement. However, the campus ministry office claimed oversight of the pro life group.

"And the bills take their unstoppable offense on the road for a meeting at MetLife against the jets. Then, a duel between two of the NFL's most decorated QBs. Fires it into one. With Stafford and the rams take on Brady's books. Touchdowns. It all begins at new eastern with the NFL today. All hail Sunday. The NFL is on CBS. So, a third major news item. This also came out on Wednesday, GP. Go ahead. Take it away. Our buddy Pete the ammo. At ESPN reported Wednesday night that Gonzaga's athletic director met with the big 12 commissioner last week in Frisco Texas while the zags were in town to play Tennessee and an ex and Pete further reported that Gonzaga has also talked to the PAC 12, also talk to the biggie. So dead leg yes or no, and that's the yes or no. That's all you can answer. Gonzaga's still gonna be in the West Coast conference. 5 years from now. Oh, now that's the question. That is the question. I will 5 years from now, November 3, 2027. I'll say no. I'll say no, but what are you gonna say? What do you guys say? I'll say no as well. I don't think you have these conversations with this many people unless you are ready to go. All right, so let's peel a few layers back and see if I can provide a little additional context. Yeah, and so I can confirm did confirm, I think you did as well. I've lost track. But yes, this did happen. The most reports, obviously, good to go. But just for purposes of our end, this did happen because Brett your mark is and he said on the publicly many times like he's going to aggressively look at any kind of way to get the big 12 to be as strong as it possibly can be. You're losing Texas and Oklahoma and 2025 unless something drastic changes, but you've got BYU, Cincinnati, Houston, UCF coming in, you will be a 12 team league in that formation to be determined if there will be a 13th or 14th theme or 15th or 16th. So we'll see on that. As it pertains to this meeting in kind of sniffing a bit on this and looking a bit deeper into it. Yes, it happened. And certainly, there is significance to that. I had three people tell me that at this stage, it's not like Gonzaga going to the big 12 is anything close to imminent. Mark few I know I've written about this previously. I don't know if I said in the podcast and I don't know if Mark few would talk about it publicly just yet or anything, but it just stands to reason. He is feverishly dedicated to leaving Gonzaga. It's going to be in a better spot than when he took the job, but he wants to make sure as best as he can that whenever he does retire, whenever that is two years from now ten years from now, who knows that Gonzaga is positioned to have the best chance at continued success at the level that he's been able to keep the program at for ten plus years. And the way that you do that is to get it in a better conference or certainly a better situation than it stands to be in with the WCC particularly with BYU, jettisoning the league and going to the big 12. So that being said, yes, he is trying to see if the big 12 can be a thing. I can report that this is not new. And Gonzaga brass have been trying to engage conferences on this conversation for months and months and months and months. So there is that. As I understand it, the big east, I guess anything could change at any moment with these things GP and I know you know that. But as we sit here and talk today this morning, the biggie is still not ready to open the door and invite Gonzaga in. There are many schools and presidents in that league that aren't enthusiastic about adding a Gonzaga to the fold there. So could it happen yes? I still don't think Gonzaga going to the big east as of now would be the more likely scenario than not, but as Val Ackerman said at biggie's media day on the record, they will have a new media rights deal that's going to come up in about three years. And if there were any schools that were to be added, she would prefer that if the biggest ever even did expand and I don't know if it will. But if it did that you get those things in order before your media rights deal comes in and that brings me to my last point here. The PAC 12 needs to get off its ass and get this done, okay? I asked around on this back in like the spring was told that because of schools like Oregon, Oregon state, Washington state, Cal. A lot of schools in the PAC 12 have no desire for Gonzaga to come into the PAC 12, which doesn't have football, so brings no value there from a basketball standpoint. Gonzaga goes into the league and at this point, you know, we didn't know UCLA was heading over to the Big Ten. Gonzaga's at worst, the third best basketball program in your conference and you obviously can make a case for it to be right there at eye level with Arizona and UCLA. So there was not a lot of desire for the Gonzaga to come in. The PAC 12 should be aggressively trying to bring Gonzaga board. If for no other reason than yes, if the football stuff, I understand it, it means so much to whatever you can get in your media rights deal. But at a certain point, your men's basketball product and what you can put into the NCAA tournament and the money that you stand to make for winning games when you win games, you get more money for your league. Having a team like that come aboard, be affiliated with that. Don't worry about Washington state would not be in a power conference if we create a power conferences in the year 2022. It's in Pullman Washington. Nothing against it, but there's no, you can't tell me that because the PAC 12 and the pack 8 form decades and decades and decades and decades ago that the bodies that formed that league should have this overriding principle and philosophy as to why you shouldn't consider expanding and making your basketball product better. Gonzaga on the other side of this parish, it should be seeking. And it may well be, I don't have this as reported fact. Gonzaga should want to be in the PAC 12 over any other league. For many logical reasons, travel, West Coast branding, your ability to recruit in that area and to not have to deal with unnecessary, you know, money issues and finances you'd have to overcome by the nature of joining in all sports and then having to travel to the middle of the country or the east coast part of the country if you were able to join a big 12 or a big east there. So I don't understand why. And it's not to say that maybe it's not happening on the super download, but I do not get the sense right now that the powers and the PAC 12 are working as aggressively as they should be to getting packed into the league.

"Still, I think he's going to have his number retired. Only Adam Morrison John Stockton and Burgess are the only guys honored in the kennel. They're the only guys who have their numbers retired there. I think Timmy's bound for it and he's going to be the fourth guy and I think he's in for a huge year. Preseason national player of the year contender obviously Oscar shibe is coming back so he'll probably win it, but Timmy's Timmy was the preseason national player of the year a year ago and he's been a two time consensus second team all American if he plays the way we think he'll play it. Yeah, Parrish. I mean, I don't know where he would stack all time, but like, you know, let's just say since the year 2000, like, yes, he's going to be among the ten to 15 best careers players in college basketball. If I will also qualify this if Gonzaga can make like minimally another elite 8, ideally, a final four and he's a consensus first team all American. He's got to do it. We got to see him, but he's clearly, he's headed toward that pace. You got a thought on Timmy before I indulge us in this Gonzaga wind total, because I'm going to read off the schedule. Wait until you get a load of it. I think he's definitely going to have his number retired. I mean, he's already a two time all American. But it's not easy. The point is not easy. There's only three Gonzaga players that have ever had it done. So I think he's going to get it, but it's not an easy accomplishment at that university. He's about to be a three time all American. And we'll probably be a he's about to be a three time all American. And he's going to have, you know, led the zags to a final four, that's easy. I know not many Gonzaga players have their numbers retired, but his is definitely going to be retired. I do think his numbers will increase this year. Because Chad Hong Kong is not there. And I think you'll probably see him shoot it a little more from the perimeter. That is what NBA, it's among the things NBA people want to see. And when he went to the combine, he was letting it fly. He didn't do a lot of that at Gonzaga, but I think you're going to see some of that this upcoming season. And when you start, we ran through the lineups or possible lineups. I think my favorite, if you're comfortable sliding straw through over to the fore, because he's more of a wing. But if you're comfortable sliding him up to four, Timmy 5 and then hickman malachi Smith and Rashid Bolton. I think that's my favorite possible lineup because let's just say Nolan hickman, is it reasonable to can he be a top 15 point guard in America? Okay. And I think that he will be. Okay. And he's got to make the jump, but that's my prediction. It's not based on the data yet, but I think he will be a top 15 point guard in the country. Yes. Okay, so let's just play let's play with this for a second. Nolan hickman emerges as a top 15 point guard in America. Beside him, you've got rasha Bolton and malachi Smith. Two guys who both shot above 40% from three last season on more than four attempts per game. So established high volume college basketball three point shooters. Stratfor, double digit score off a team that was just the number one C, the instantly tournament, proven guy. And then a first team all American at center. I mean, top 15 point guard, two guys that shoot above 40% from three Strata and Timmy. That's tough. That's tough. That's what I think is that's the best team in the country. And yet, and I don't want to, I don't want to belabor this point. For so many people, it just doesn't matter. It's just like, when a title or shut the hell up, which is stupid, we're not going to re litigate this again. But for those listening to a podcast on college hoops in the middle of August, thankfully, you're smarter than that and you don't come to this podcast and you don't rely on those ankle ankle deep shallow takes, but unfortunately Gonzaga has hit that stage where other teams, other sports figures are when it all or we don't want to hear from you. Let's just move on real quick because we're trying to keep the numbers of the numbers. Past 6 years, they finished first first, second first, tenth and first at Ken palm. Number one and for the past 6 seasons, average finished in the past 6 years is 2.66 average finished in the past four years is 1.25. Gonzaga is still in search of its first national title. That is true. I can't deny that. This is also true. There has been no better college basketball program over the past 6 years than Gonzaga. Both those things are true. How many games are they going to win this regular season? Here's the non conference schedule as it's been assembled here. They actually have not just transparency. We are pre taping this. So there's a chance, I guess it can take a while announce it's non conference schedule in between us taping this and it publishing. But the big teams are pretty much been determined here. So anything else is just going to be filler as far as I know. Gonzaga will play at play against Michigan state on the aircraft carrier in San Diego to start the season, which is going to be incredible. And then it goes at Texas. That's the return game Texas was there last year. I was in the kennel for that. PK 85, they'll start with Portland state, then they could either Purdue or West Virginia, and then, as we mentioned on the duke episode, could be Gonzaga duke for a second consecutive season on a neutral. If the bracket breaks that way, if not, Florida Xavier or Oregon state would be there. Then, quote unquote, home to Kentucky, we'll get to that in a second. Ursus Baylor in South Dakota at Alabama and Birmingham in Birmingham and home against Washington, which has been down, but still Washington still power conference program. Let me read this again. Michigan state, Texas, PK 85, which could face two high level tournament teams, Kentucky and Spokane, Baylor and South Dakota, Bama and Birmingham, home against Washington. BYU is still in the WCC GP, so we're going to go win totals. Again, in the regular season, here's the data, other data. Gonzaga's average regular season win total the past 6 seasons. And I prorated this is 27 and a half. I prorated it in that it lost regular season games, not lost as a result as then they got taken out because of COVID. So actually the past two seasons when Gonzaga finished with, I think 24 piece in the regular season that's lower than they normally would have had. So I bumped it up a little bit. 27 and a half is about the number over the past 6 seasons. So that in mind, what is your, what is your guess? You just heard what I said non conference. And the duke episode, I said 20, what did I say? 22, you had 23 and you said you might go up one more Gonzaga as your number one team. Number one team, how many games are you going to win the second season GP? So heading into the West Coast conference tournament. Yes, what's their record for 31 games?

"Podcast where we sometimes discuss camouflage dodo birds and leaky black cow boon. It's here with me if you're watching on YouTube, please. Smash the like button like your Brandon Davies, you have consent and there was some significant scheduling news announced on Tuesday night John calipari and Mark few jointly announced during a telethon, the Kentucky man's basketball program was holding to raise money to assist parts of the state that have been devastated by recent flooding. They announced the UK and Gonzaga. Gonna start a home at home series this upcoming season. They're gonna play November 20th, 2022 in Spokane. Thinking Zack is gonna return the game, play it ruff arena in the 2023 24 season. Strong Joe, how good is a Kentucky Gonzaga home at home series? Oh, it's fantastic. It's fantastic. This is exactly what college basketball. This is what makes college basketball so great. Two teams who are probably going to be top 5 pre season teams. They're top 5 preseason right now on your CBS sports top 25 and one. The venues should be fantastic. I really enjoyed kind of the video that Kentucky put out yesterday kind of announcing the news. John calipari teasing it saying few once the schedule a game, but that few is dictating the terms and then it was almost like subtension when they were kind of talking about it, saying, you know, callous and we're Kentucky. And Mark view is still kind of dictating the terms. If you kind of went back at him saying like, hey, you know, we were fine. Cow is the one who said, hey, want to play, and I just kind of agreed to it. So however it worked, however it went down. I'm very happy that it went down because a home and home between Gonzaga and Kentucky is going to be fantastic. Theater, especially next season, two really good teams. I mean, drew Timmy versus Oscar Shibuya is going to be a fantastic matchup very much looking forward to this two game series. It's awesome. It's two of the biggest brands in the sport. Like you said, two pre season top 5 teams. I've got Gonzaga number one in the top 25 and one. I've got Kentucky number four, both picked to win their leagues. So to projected conference champions, two of the biggest, like I said, brands in the sport. A current Hall of Fame coach and a future undeniable Hall of Fame coach. And two first team preseason all Americans on the court, in some cases, I'm certain guarding each other. It is the last season's preseason national player of the year drew Timmy. And last season's actual player of the year, Oscar she wet. So it is just awesome, awesome, awesome. But I will say, and I watched the video and it was, it was fun. But nobody dictates terms to John calipari about anything. And I think that's why John was half laughing, smiling while saying it, because he knows, and he knows Mark knows. And he knows anybody that knows the relationship between those two, knows that John is going to do this if he's going to do it. Probably on his terms. And that leads me to a point that I haven't seen anybody else make, but it is something that I noticed while watching the video. It's John calipari and Mark few sort of going back and forth talking about the launch of the series. And I couldn't help but notice the way they discussed it. Mark few said specifically that he's going to bring the zags to rup arena. Right. John calry never said specifically that he's bringing the wildcats to the McCarthy athletic center, also known as the kennel. He merely said UK will play in Spokane. Now, if you don't know anything about the history between these two coaches, you probably didn't notice that. But I did, because John calipari and Mark few, they have done home and home series before. And cow has always refused to take his team to the kittle. Now let me run you through some of the history. As you likely know, before John calipari was the coach at Kentucky, he was the coach at Memphis. And after Louisville, marquette Cincinnati and most of the other good programs left conference USA, his tigers were dominating that league, the same way Gonzaga was dominating the west coast conference. And so with that as the backdrop, John Calvin Mark few decided to play each other to test each other. It was a great series. Memphis and zaga ended up playing four times before Cal left for Kentucky. Twice in Memphis, twice in Spokane. But both games in Spokane were played off campus at the downtown Spokane arena, which is not Gonzaga's home arena. Now, obviously, Mark few wanted those games back then at the kennel. But John would not play there. And his logic was hilarious. As I remember, John argued that Memphis shouldn't have to play on Gonzaga's campus because Gonzaga didn't have to play on Memphis campus. Never mind that Memphis does not have an on campus arena. Memphis is home arena is FedEx form in downtown Memphis. Gonzaga's home arena is the kennel. On campus at Gonzaga. Logically, obviously, if consanguine didn't have to play on Memphis campus, logically,

"Yeah, no, it feels like he's peaking. And that's not like, it's not a pejorative in this circumstance, although I understand that it must feel that way at times because we just haven't had that guy Tim. Not like this, like the whole, I want to be the face of college basketball. Like that guy does not want to really exist anymore because of the way that the NBA has lured and the G league and all of the overtime leagues, all of these new upstart kind of startup deals have been taking talent away from the game. They have. And we talk about his deal with the casino being the NCAA's worst nightmare. Well, he's really on the court. He's their dream, right? I mean, he is someone that people can recognize, right? That's the problem with college basketball is the recognition factor. We know how good Chet holmgren is, but we also know that we're not going to see him in a Gonzaga uniform next year. You know, during from Memphis, Ben Carroll from duke, I mean, we can appreciate them in the moment, but there's no carryover. That's smart on their part. Trust me, they should not come back to school. But this guy is for college basketball. He's a dream. He's someone that you can either love, you can hate, but you know he's gonna be there. He's there for three years and you develop sort of this weird sporting fan relationship with a guy that way. That is becoming very, very rare in college basketball. It's a version of college basketball that I love and the question after that is like, what happens when he leaves? Tim, because drew Timmy, we don't know if he's going to declare for the NBA draft after this season. We don't know if he's going to return to Gonzaga yet. But from a personality standpoint, yeah, I'm confident in drew Timmy being a hit in the league. But what do you think his game on the court's going to be like as a pro? Well, he has deficiencies. And I think that they're mostly foot speed. He has some questions about whether he can be an on ball defender against quicker, tall guys in the NBA. The other issue is his outside shooting, which to be fair, he just hasn't had to use very much when he does, he's not terrible. He's a decent shooter. And you know, he acknowledges again the king of self awareness. He acknowledges that these are things that the NBA teams have questions about. And he says that he has gone out of his way to work on these things as a way of showing these teams that he is willing to work on the things that as he puts it, I suck at. Coming out of high school, people so I want to be a good college player. I think people overlook production and just the consistency. Now I get it. I don't have the biggest wingspan or I can't touch the top corner of the backboard, you know? I'm probably not the sexiest combine guy around, but I'm a big team guy. Obviously, I'm not going to have the same role here as I would in the league if I'm fortunate enough to play there. You know, I take it from German O'Neil who obviously has a bias because he's one of his agents and he also was his coach in AAU in high school. Former NBA center Jermaine O'Neal, yeah. He has seen drew Timmy dominate guys who are in the NBA right now. And he says without reservation, drew Timmy is a first round draft pick. He's gonna be a good NBA player. And you know, I mean, I'd like to believe that. I don't know that I believe that, but I think it would be next to him coming back next year, which I think would be the most hilarious thing in college sports in the last probably 20 years. I think that him going in and having a really solid NBA career and exceeding expectations would be would be kind of fun to watch. I'd like to see that personality and how it flies at that level. Yeah, a big part of me admittedly does want your Timmy to just become the van wilder of Spokane. Just like never leave. And on that note, I mean, he's not done yet, right? I mean, Gonzaga's gonna play number four Arkansas on Thursday night if they win that game. They're gonna play the winner of Texas tech and duke in the elite 8 and from there they'll probably have to get through UCLA or Carolina to get to the championship game. And on the other side of the bracket, you have Arizona and Kansas, their fellow number one seeds. Like this road is tough, Tim, like this is a really hard path to win that first ever national title. So what would it mean to drew Timmy to lead Gonzaga to it? Well, I think first off it would be validation, right? It'd be validation for him and coming back. It would be sort of a sign that his trust in Mark few and this program was warranted. I think it would also probably improve his draft stock. If he does what he did against Memphis and continues to will this team to a national championship, they're going to have to take notice. They're going to have to see that there's something about this guy that is, you know, I hate to use the word intangible because he does a lot of tangible things, but there's just a part of him that is more than what you see. You know, on a side note, I just want to see him saddle up to his perhaps last game, you know? A couple seats from the bench an hour and a half before the game and start talking about the weather and see how well it goes over. "He got this place, but he competed every single time. Like, he played 9 minutes in that first half. He competed or I can't remember. It might have been 11. It was either 9 or 11. He contested every single shot. His ability and drop coverage to just be in the right position all the time was absolutely elite. He was rotationally aware the entire time. If you look at the numbers in terms of how Gonzaga's defense succeeded or failed, when chat holmgren was on the court. Have I shown you these numbers yet? Have you seen them? I don't know if you had or you tweeted. I think I saw something similar, but I don't know if you showed it to me directly. So chat holmgren played 52 possessions in that game because he played most of the second half. And missed, I think it was like 17 possessions in that game. And in the 50 or no, it was 51 possessions. In the 51 possessions, he played in that game. Memphis scored 52 points. It was like one O two points per possession. How many points do you think Memphis scored in the 17 possessions he was off the court? So I don't say double, but 1.75? Yeah, it was a 1.52 point per possession Mark. They scored 26 points in 17 sessions when shot homegrown was off the court. And you could see why. They just pummeled Gonzaga onto the interior. As soon as soon as they pulled them too, as soon as they pulled it, which is a good coaching move by penny Hardaway too. You could see the difference immediately. I thought Chet holmgren was outstanding defensively in that game. Wasn't just good, wasn't just okay. He was outstanding. His defense in that game, it's not the biggest reason Gonzaga won that game. The biggest reason Gonzaga won that game. Number one for me is Andrew nem hard..

"Of course comes with highs and lows, right? Everyone now all of a sudden he's like, oh, who's this kid? Like 9 months ago, nobody knew who I was 'cause I thought I was just like this. Tall, skinny, white kid who couldn't really hoop is just there because it's all. But now people know who I am. People know what I can do. I try not to pay too much attention to it. Just kind of focus on myself and just kind of stay. You mentioned a minute ago that everything his parents did with his development was deliberate. How did they handle this overnight fame that came his way after that viral video and as he became considered one of, if not the top prospect in the country? Yeah, his parents are very level headed. Even to this day, like his mother, he does his laundry. He's expected to clean up after himself. His mother is a very active. She's very active in social justice. She's worked for not for profits her whole life. He grew up at a dinner table. We're having conversations about things that are going on in the real world. We're very common. It wasn't like we're going to just sit here and talk about sports. We're going to talk about things that are happening in the world, including, you know, Black Lives Matter. As a young kid in high school, he was at a protest. And when you're 7 foot one, you can't hide like people find you. So he knew he was going to be seen, and he was fine with that, which is wonderful. And we should all feel great about that. But look, there's a lot of kids who would be like, I want to be there, but I'm afraid to be there because of the backlash or the inevitable questions. But thanks to his parents, he was really raised to believe that basketball is what you're good at, and it's a great thing, but it's not going to define who you are. And in the conversation or conversations that you've had with Chet himself, what other impressions did you have of him overall? His personality and especially how he's been handling all the scrutiny that has come his way. Yeah, I mean, it was funny when I went out there. I had a hard time. I'll be honest pinning him down for an interview. He was just reticent to do interviews at the time. He had just gotten to Gonzaga really and I was probably the first national reporter that was there. And he was wary. I think understandably, he's come of age as a great player as a really unique player at the exact same time that NIL is coming out and players are getting paid and we're having more kind of expectations because of that place on him. And I think he was very aware that he's going to get a lot of attention and didn't necessarily love it. I don't know, there's no formula. You know, I don't pay too much attention to people I don't know. Okay. But once he kind of got to talking to you, he was really anxious to talk more about you. Can you come into this right yourself? Our whole team is a bunch of really cool guys. I don't think there's anyone on the team that has a problem with anyone really. Yeah. Yeah, we're all super cool with each other. Yeah. For sure. Yeah. It's easy. Yeah, I just think he's like a normal kid. That's really what I took away. I think sometimes we forget that just because you're an extraordinary basketball player at 19 doesn't make you this eloquent orator. Gonzaga head coach Mark few is definitely not a one and done kind of coach, at least in general. You know, he likes to bring in and develop players who are going to stick around for a while. So why do you think he went after Chet homegrown the way he did? Considering he's almost certainly out of there after one season. Yeah, I mean, I think he will tell you having grown up in Philadelphia and covered Jay Wright for a lot. I consider Mark few and Jay Wright's approach very similar to how they recruit players. They want players who are whether you're here for one year or four years, you're very grounded in being present. You don't have one foot out the door. You're not worried about what's next. You're worried about what's in front of you. And so Gonzaga did their due diligence as much on Chet as Chet did on Gonzaga. It's really interesting. I think people are like, wow, he chose Gonzaga, but there was a reciprocity there. They chose him too. I mean, they would not have taken him if they didn't feel like he would fit the sort of team chemistry that they have worked so hard to build. I think they felt more secure having gone through it with Jalen suggs coming from the same high school program. Knowing the same sort of people and the dynamic of the high school program, they knew what Chet was coming from. So I think it wasn't even a risk. It was a definite calculated decision though. They know he's not going to stick around, but is he going to be present while he's here? And all indications are, he 3000% is. And you know how in your view has Chet holmgren done so far this season, especially relative to the expectations that you had for him coming in as he's shown the kind of toughness and strength that I think a lot of people assumed he didn't have. Yeah, I mean, look, it's funny, if you look at his numbers, I mean, people would say, well, he's averaging 14 points and 9.6 rebounds and two assists per game. Okay, those are great numbers. Don't miss it, but it's not like he's averaging 30 points a game. But he's playing within the system of a team that is incredibly talented and has a lot of options, but he is very dominant. If you actually watch Gonzaga play defensively, teams stop going inside because of his presence. They get blocked a few times, and they don't go in there anymore. You know what I mean? He gives them an inside presence that they didn't have last year. These averaging, you know, regular double doubles the last few games. He's blocking shots. And if you watch him play, you know, you'll see these spurts of a game where he'll go down and drain a three, run back, block a shot, come down, dunk.

"For the past few months, one of the most unusual NBA prospects we've seen in a while has been quietly dominating opponents up in Spokane. The whole grid with the left hand and a foul. I mean, that was such a smart, petty move by chat Homer. It's overused. The phrase unicorn, but this is a true unicorn. You don't see them all that often, but Chet Hong grenade is exactly that and he's the best 19 year old songwriter. Today, the athletics Dana O'Neill on Gonzaga's 7 foot one inch, a 195 pounds, human walking stick, chat holmgren. His truly unusual skill set and how he's proven time and time again that he's not, in fact, too skinny to Hank. Plus, will homegrown be the number one pick in this year's NBA draft. From wondering in the athletic, I'm under skeleton. It's Friday, February 25th, and this is the lead. Deen O'Neill, welcome back to the show. Thank you for having me. Appreciate it. So Dana, you spent some time with the Gonzaga bulldogs back in the late fall just as the season was about to begin. And you watch the team in action. First, can you describe what it's like to see at homegrown and his very unusual frame up close in person? Yeah, it's funny, well I am the mother of a very tall skinny boy who was 17 years old and he jokingly refers to Chet holmgren as a spirit animal because Chet is just long. Everything about him is long and lean. His arms are just, they dangle. Everything about him is long. I remember staring at his hands, thinking, well, they look long to me, but maybe I'm just so then I glanced over at his teammate drew Timmy to say, oh yeah, his hands are, in fact, exceptionally long. And he's skinny. I mean, I remember thinking because I was out there at Halloween time that he looks like one of the skeletons hanging like a skeleton with their limbs attacked by grommets that people had decorating their houses because that's just how he looked and so you look at him and you think, okay, he's just a tall skinny college kid that's gonna get his rear end handed to him, frankly. Well, he's often referred to as a unicorn, you know, a 7 footer with skills that someone his size should definitely not have. What stands out to you about his game? I think a lot of things, I think the thing that people most jump to when you see a guy who's 7 foot who can handle the ball, right? I mean, he's not certainly not a point guard, but he's very comfortable bringing the ball up the court. He's got a real sense of smart passage. Jimmy down low, it's easy from there. So ten hunger gets the rebound and then gets the assist at the other end of the floor. I mean, it's just. His imprints is all over the game. He's much more comfortable facing the basket, frankly, than, you know, some big guys aren't. He's also a good three point shooter. I mean, he is not afraid to take a three. He makes three. Three and perfect from the outside for the freshman 7 footer. He is just growing up. Before our eyes and once again. But I think the other thing that really struck me, they told me that in October when I was out there and I had since watched his games enough to know that it's true, he is not a pushover. I think we tend to think of somebody that skinny that someone is just going to come in and just dominate him. And that does not happen. Z dick went right in homegrown who just stuffed him. You can see Z dick knows I've got to get to homegrown's chest, but for most guys that works. It's a different deal. Well, Chet holmgren has faced his fair share of doubters during his very young career. Mostly because of that bill that we've talked about. Can you tell us a little about his development as a player and how he's been able to sort of prove his doubters wrong along the way? Like, what did his journey before Gonzaga look like? Well, you know, first of all, he's really lucky. His father was a basketball player. And his father is sort of like four, really. He's like, the filled out grown-up version of Chet, who's like, you know, found food and beer, I guess or what have you. But so his dad came up as a tall skinny guy who understood the challenges of working with a body like that. When Chet was in the 8th grade, he was kind of having some knee issues and stuff like that. You were moving at 6 three, but now you're moving at 6 9 and it's completely different. So my knees hurt really bad. I'd have grown pains in my legs. I got shin splints a lot. I don't really. And his father said, no Mas, you're not playing. We're shutting you down for a little bit because his father had knee issues. His whole life that really kind of stopped his progress cold because his legs, his knees could not keep up with his growth. And his father did not want that to happen to chess. In high school at minnehaha academy in Minneapolis, Jalen suggs was on the team. You know, last year's star at Gonzaga. My first made ten third grade. When you walked in a practice with his long khaki shorts, his college teach short and his little busted kicks. I showed up for the first time together. They played with Paige Becker's and their driveway. Growing up, I used to say, they're just so tickets for that. Could you imagine like Paige Becker's and Jalen suggs and Chet holmgren and I pick up game. But you know they look out for each other and Jalen really looked out for Chet. He looked like a big thing a string tease, you know, just looking goofy out there and kind of took him under my wing. I was like my little brother. And now he's like my little big brother because he's 7 feet. Hey. So Chet was sort of, you know, the sidekick, if you will, and that was great for him. So there wasn't all of this attention all the time on him. And suggs his father was his coach on the side. And he was instrumental in developing him as well, making sure everything was deliberate. They were very careful with him. They didn't want him to have too much. They wanted him to grow naturally. They wanted him to enjoy sort of a regular progression as a high school kid despite the fact that he had sort of these otherworldly gifts and he really didn't come along until really late in his career. Well, I know the moment that he came on to many people's radar happened at high school prospects camp put on by Steph Curry for anyone who hasn't seen that video Dana. Can you explain what happened there? Right, so he was at Steph's camp and Steph is famous for his crossover move and all of that. So basically, Chet holmgren, Steph Curry Steph Curry, which is one thing to do when you're any high school kid, but you do it when you're that size. It just doesn't fit. And he kind of crosses him over in scores. And of course, everyone goes bananas and this being the world of the Internet, it gets picked up and gets tons and tons of views. So all of a sudden, he's sort of like this Internet sensation, which.

"On the road. I just think that tips the scales. It's among the things that tips the scales in auburn's favor. Yeah, and by the way, auburn, it's in the spot because it won at all miss on the road, pulled away late. It was close game until I feel like 5 minutes to go or so. And it got 20 points ten boards and 7 blocks at a walker Kessler Katie Johnson is yet another player on this team who is multifaceted. It probably doesn't get as much run as he should, but there's a lot of studs on this group. He had 14 points, he had three three pointers. He also had three steals there. So a Goodwin for Aubrey put him in this spot. We talked about this. If not on the previous podcast, two shows ago, Albert's highest ranking ever, I wanted to bring this up in real time here is number two. It's done at three times 99 2000 season 98 99 season got as high as second in both of those seasons and then way back in the 58 59 season auburn reached second in the poll. I think auburn is going to be two when the AP top 25 publishes on Monday. Again, awesome team, whatever. In the moment, it would be incredible and something significant for that program to say we have been the number one ranking, but it's also great that they can be number two. And I think we're going to look up in two weeks and some of the stuff just isn't going to matter as much because operating Gonzaga probably will be projected on the one line no matter what and the two line at worst. One real other quick thing on this though because again, I didn't look at your rankings. I'm just curious where you have them. If you look in terms of resume accomplishments, there's another team that's close in this conversation that I don't think anyone is really considering for this level because right now as we let me see if I can guess what it is. Watching is it. Wisconsin? Correct. Which I have third in the top 25 and one. Perfect. Okay, because Baylor Wisconsin and Iowa state are the only teams with 5 quad one wins. And if you combine quad one and quad two, Wisconsin has more than any other team in the country. Wisconsin is currently 9 and two against quad one and quad two. And for all intents and purposes, when we talk about how teams get into the tournament, be it with seating at large on the bubble, your quad one means a ton for sure, especially if you're trying to split hairs quad one quad two. Those are the winds that actually matter. Quadrant quad four, you don't want to play a ton and you certainly don't want to lose those games. So to simplify it, that's really what those things how they split up. And as we get closer to the tournament, we'll remind listeners about where these arbitrary brakes are, et cetera, et cetera. You don't need to worry too much about that right here now. But Wisconsin has a wonderful record against the high end of its schedule and its losses are both good. Providence at home Johnny Davis wasn't even in that game and then obviously a respectable loss on paper to Ohio State albeit the buckeyes ran Bucky off the floor in that. So Wisconsin doesn't deserve to be, I think, sitting at the table with auburn and Gonzaga, but it's right off to the side. It's ready to pull up a chair there and coming off a win against a Ohio State on the road Thursday. Wisconsin then play this weekend. I think that also factors in if Wisconsin had played a quad one opponent and was sitting here at 15 to two as we talked now. I actually think there might be a little bit of a conversation to be had as it stands, Wisconsin's next game will come Tuesday at northwestern. Notice some of the comments on the YouTube stream. Just a couple of things. I'm not going to make a habit of addressing every comment I see. It sort of gets the podcast off the revs a little bit. But one person said, you know, parish is just making the argument for auburn because he wants a new number one. I've been the biggest proponent of Gonzaga for years now. There was nothing that I would enjoy watching more than Gonzaga winning a national championship so that the people who act like stupidly Gonzaga can't win a national championship would have to at that point be quiet. So that's just silly. And the other comment I saw is that while auburn just has a bunch of quad two wins. And so why does that put auburn ahead of Gonzaga? Auburn's got a better record in quad one than Gonzaga. Auburn's four and one quadrant one. Gonzaga's four and two. Again, if you want to make the argument for Gonzaga, I already told you how to do it. But if we're talking about who deserves and I guess this is the best way to put it, who deserves to be ranked number one in the country based on what they've actually done since the beginning of this season. Since the season started, I do not think there's any actual intelligent debate for anybody other than Bruce pearls, auburn tigers, which is not to suggest Gonzaga isn't awesome. Let me walk you through this real quick. 1402 overall, three O and the WCC first three West Coast conference games. One 1783 over pepperdine. One ten 84 over BYU, one 15 83 over Santa Clara destroying people. It's a 26 point win over a BYU team that's beaten Oregon saint Mary San Francisco. I now have BYU by the way in the top 25 and one at number 23. It's a 32 point win over a Santa Clara routine that's beaten TCU in Stanford. And I saw this from ESPN stats and info. Gonzaga has the best three game points per game average in division one with 114 points per game. And his eggs also just shot 60% from the field over the past three games. That's the best field goal percentage in any three games span by any division one team this season. True Timmy, average in 31 points, 6 and a half rebounds in his past two outings. Gonzaga is walloping the competition right now. Again, if you want to make the case frig number one, use some of that stuff and mix it to them with their number one and most of the computers. It'll be fine. But if we're looking at what have you done, what have you not done in terms of racking up wins and avoiding losses? I still think the scales tip to auburn. Next up for Gonzaga, by the way, Thursday's rescheduled game. This was just announced this afternoon with San Francisco. You and I stayed up late last night, Saturday night watching San Francisco and BYU. Yeah, we did. It was nice after, you know, frankly, those patriots was just.

"It's not one singles that it's a team thing, and I had to make sure that I was competing against those guys and trying to beat their team, not them individually. I'm wondering just a little and obviously he's probably more mature than I was at that age. And follow Ben Carroll will be feeling a little bit of that. And if he is, he's got to make sure that he gets that under control early because he can't allow that to speed him up and get him in a one on one match, whether it be with due to me, but particularly with Chet holmgren. And so he's going to have to be cool and calm beyond his years and let the game come to him versus kind of trying to get 20 in two minutes. And get out of control, get himself in some file trouble by picking up some offensive files. So I'm interested to see his mindset going into the game. Wait, I could find now you got to tell us what you did against those dudes. I mean, like, you set the stage. I mean, did you kick their ass or not? I mean, come on now. I mean, you gotta tell us, I know you don't find all players know when they get that big matchup. All right? I know you know. I mean, what'd you drop on those dudes? You scarred about your buckets. No, it only counts if you win him. I was over four against duke. You're accused twice in the carrier dome. So I felt good about that one. And we lost to Georgetown twice, had him beat at halftime in the NCAA tournament and Charles Smith went out for 30. And lost that one too. So good against Syracuse, not so much against Georgetown to do. We know Seth. This is, you know, so feast week and having it end up with duke Gonzaga in Las Vegas is going to be incredibly memorable and impactful for all of us. But I have to tell you that the most memorable and impactful thing from this trip is didn't make his bed. So the nicest guy in America didn't make his bed. I can see it right behind it. You know what that is, though, Jay, right? You're in a hotel room? He's going to sleep. I'm going right. If I should go to sleep and not because he was having a bender or he was on the table sponsor to go to Sansa to go to sleep till about one o'clock one 32. Even in Pacific standard time. For ten years, you wake up in the middle of the night to have that conversation. Like if I call my wife late at night, she'd like just hang up. I was a little bit fatigue last night, so I had a little eye fatigue, did I see what I thought I saw? Said, the J get your BL last night? No, no, I'm a Diet Coke. They gave me the wrong Bill. They gave me they gave me multiple maker's Mark. I don't want to say how many could say, I don't want to, I don't want to. I don't want to tarnish pillows this image or anything. But they're a whole lot of stringer maker's mark on that bill. I said, I'm trying to die. Well, I didn't actually find Seth got exactly the right Bill because I told the waitstaff give it to my dad. Oh man, that was an action. That was very nice for ESPN too. Yes, it was that Thanksgiving meal. That was a nice meal. Everything was great, except the person directly to my left..

"Seth Greenberg. On campus I'm Seth Greenberg, joined by Jay billis and lafonta Ellis. And we are on Las Vegas to roll in basically the confines of our own separate rooms. Probably make sense. And feast week. Coming to an end, but as we come to an end the 5th week, we've got a really special game and I know Jay, you're on the call and you have a chance to watch duke and watch Gonzaga practice. Just what's your first take on that game, because that game to me has all the makings of an instant classic and maybe even a final four national championship game. It is basketball royalty playing against one another and two teams. I mean, the last time I can remember them playing was in the Maui invitational with Zion Williamson RJ Barrett, Rui Hashimoto, all those guys and Gonzaga won the game. It was an unbelievable heavyweight fight. And I think this game will be similar that, you know, I think Gonzaga is one of the best offensive basketball teams that I can recall in the game. With all of their cutting or vertical cuts, you know, they'll late cut into things and the different sets they run and they have 5 guys that can legitimately dribble pass and shoot. And you know, people talk about multi positional, but they really are. And to be able to take like a 7 foot two guy chat homegirl who's a freshman, and they can space him out in the corner, run action and a big guy can't protect the basket because he's worried about a three. I mean, it's remarkable. And then I think duke is legit. I think it's got the chance to be a great game. But you know, after I watch Gonzaga, if you're all watch kids, I can take apart UCLA, you kind of feel one as the favorite and I think it's Gonzaga. What are your first thoughts? Yeah, my first thoughts are similar. They're incredible the way they run offense. I mean, the way you Gonzaga pushes that basketball and misses N makes tremendous pressure on your transition defense. And then once you do get set, their ability to space the floor, they can go 5 hours and before round one makes an incredibly hard to defend them. And as I watch duke, if they try to deny passing lanes and get really up and in the basketball, I think they it will expose them to a degree because to Jay's point, all 5 guys can put it on the floor and get to the middle that can put it on the floor and get to the middle and be able to create place for others. And I'm intrigued by the matchup with Paolo Ben Caro and drew Timmy. And I think it's going to be important early, especially for the young freshmen to not get himself in file trouble, but really both from the post. And when he catches it out on the floor, trying to get drew Timmy and some filed trouble. And if he can do that, it puts duke in a really good position. Yeah, I think Timmy's gonna end up getting matched up with Mark Williams early on in the game, at least. I don't know, you know, I think if smaller, I think, I think we're going to see that match up. But you know, to me, you know, you made a point about pressure. And duke seems to be back to old school duke. An old school duke was up into the bald and iron ball reversal up the line that I entry passes and the spacing of Gonzaga is special. Their cutting is more than special. Jay, you mentioned they got four gamers and playmakers all over the floor, which kind of puts a lot of pressure on that. Their ability to play on the ball or off the ball. And I've been fascinated with Julian's strawberry because he's like cork kissberg one. Yeah. Big time three point shooter, very good cutter rebounds. His position straight line, more of a straight line driver, I've been really pressed with him and I've been blown away by the poise, the patient's, the manner in which Andrew net heart is carrying himself. He said, not a good leader is a great leader. He never gets sped up. He plays it his own pace. He advanced passes the ball up when the opportunities there. You go underneath the ball screen. He's going to knock down a three. He moves to the open spot when he feeds the post. I don't think that pressure can bother this Gonzaga Gonzaga team. What your guys thought on that, Jay? I think that's the whole key to the game is due because I agree with you. I think duke is trying to pressure more. They're trying to play out in passing lanes more, which they haven't been doing as much in the last several years. So it's going to be pressure at every spot. And so the big question is going to be can do push Gonzaga a little bit further out on the floor. You know, maybe make nem heart turn his back a little bit. In initiating and then extend the catch if you can extend every catch that might be able to disrupt some of the timing and cutting actions, take away some vision. That's easy to say. Everybody says they want to do that. And that was my biggest question. Like I was asking all the, you know, all the Gonzaga guys, 'cause I haven't seen it. I haven't seen anybody speed up and or never yet..

"Me, he was better than advertised over it. Agreed. And so we've talked about as good as that Gonzaga team was last year. The one thing they were missing was somebody who could erase mistakes at the rim. Set home was absolutely brilliant. That was a point in the first half, if I'm remembering correctly that I think UCLA was what one for 12 on layups and it was partly because the big fellow was coming in, blocking and altering shots. He had three blocks shots at halftime and the one that he didn't block, he altered. And what happened said, when you have that kind of height and length and you're exactly right, when you're driving in there and you're penetrating deep and you see a second guy coming over, particularly in this case holmgren, you got to be aware of who to make the next fast shoot. Seth, he's so long and so big. I think he was taking away viewing angles to even make the past. His display. I thought the play of the game for him. He blocks a shot on one end, pushes it up the floor, throws it behind his back and jumps with two feet from seeming like the foul line and dunks it. And that was kind of emblematic of the entire way the game went tonight in favor of Gonzaga. They were absolutely brilliant. Yeah, it was to talk about domination. You want to talk about storylines, you want to know what happened? Why did it happen? How did it happen? You saw it and played out. But I would say I would tip my cap to Gonzaga and how they played it. I always talk about flow. So if you don't get something in transition, most teams would bring it out and run a secondary of reset. Baggage gets right into their concepts. They get right into their flow. The ball moves and all of a sudden it's dribble handoff. High ball screen flare in the backside. So they're not clipped they're actions that are drilled and taught and concepts. It's weak react. It's feel you watch this game. I don't think they took a bad shot. Nope. I think they made very many bad advantage disadvantaged decisions. They made any risk reward plays, they defended. Yes. Transition, they played with spacing. I mean, absolutely dominated. Yes. Maybe the game from start to finish. Hey Seth, you mentioned flow and how easily they flow into the offense. Did you notice how I just flowed over to my door to get my room service delivered to me right there? And you didn't even notice I even missed a beat there big boy. That was that funds. I have to admit, I know one thing. I'm going to get that final meal of the day. I mean, I don't in Vegas. Bristol. Is going to get that last meal of the day. I miss my double Turkey burgers in Bristol, though, and my little kale salad Seth. I had to, you know, I had to go with the little Asian food this time around. It's coming. There's no doubt about it. I mean, now it's almost, you know, you think about it with this game behind us. What do we have to look forward to? I'll tell you what we have looked into. Starts battleford land. It's a bad word for lattice. Tomorrow, it's Michigan state Loyola. All right. Team that went to the elite 8. I'm not mistaken last year. The whole team that has one of the other coaches in the country drew Valentine, a loyal team that returns everyone butt Cameron crowd way. The loyal team. And I think shooting about 33s a game against a Michigan state team, that's still developed in our identity. It's all burned Connecticut. What a great game that'll be. It's baller. All right, you know, I've got a chance to watch a little bit on tape that LJ cryer is playing. JTT Jonathan cha cha. I mean, we've got so much to look forward to. Duke, Gonzaga on Friday. Yes. What a weak a basketball. And then first thoughts when you and your coach Vitale get on the mic. Emotional, Seth, I can't imagine what it must be. Look, the game, the college basketball game, I don't think would have the type of notoriety and following that it has without dig my towel. I mean, to just happen to run into them last night as we were coming up the elevator and he his wife and I talked for quite a bit. And he said, fine, you know what I'm concerned about. He said, I'm concerned about losing it emotionally when I go on air tomorrow. Will I be able to maintain my composure and sure enough in the open? He just was broken up, not almost like in a global perspective, Seth, so thankful and grateful to actually be able to call a game overwhelmed by the text, the phone calls, the hay dicky V we're playing for you. That kind of thing and to see that kind of flow out into the game. I felt a great sense of pride for being working for the greatest Sports Network in the world as a coworker of his and I don't know whose idea it was to have him called a game tonight, especially under the circumstances, but I don't think it was, I don't think it could have been more fitting than to have him back behind the mic here in his diaper dandy baby and all that. I thought it was great. It was great. It was heartwarming for me. And encouraging that a guy who's going through chemotherapy right now at what is the 82 years old? I think so. To be able to find the reserve and the strength and the courage to and the fortitude to travel all the way here to Vegas to get behind the mic and I thought he did a brilliant job behind the mic tonight. Yeah, I was moved. And I knew coach would be emotional. But you know what? Once the ball went up and I thought this was one of the best games I've heard of call in a long time. Great point. Right on it. He was locked in the information. The game got out of hand. He gave context to what was happening. He gave context to where UCLA is. He gave context to home grid in his potential. Yes. And the perception of his game the unselfishness and net heart and his development is changing role. I thought coach I thought coach was great. I thought coach was great and I said the seasonal officially begin when he's back. Now look, that was well said. Long road ahead of him. You know, he needs to be careful. I know he's excited. I know he's going to go out..

"So if Gonzaga stump was a little bit with its freshman and it gets picked off once or twice the non con I think it's overall quad one numbers are going to suffer at the end of the season. And that's why or at least that's the avenue I would say, I don't think it's gonna happen, but you asked, that's my answer. That's how I think we get to that point. I'm not that concerned about the youth. Although I acknowledge it could be a factor early. Like, you know, they play Texas very early. Tech's got a bunch of old dudes. And Gonzaga's probably gonna start three freshmen. Now three of the top 6 are probably going to be non freshman are definitely going to be non freshman. And that is a recipe that has worked before. You know, top 6, three freshmen, three 9 freshmen, Kentucky won a title in 2012, but that formula duke want to try to win 2015 with that formula. I'm not that concerned about it, although I acknowledge it could show up. And if they lose to Texas, early, that might be the reason. Like Texas came in with a bunch of experienced guys who were 21, 22, 23 years old and Gonzaga just couldn't match them physically. I don't really have any concerns about this team. I think they're going to be great. That's why I picked on the winter national championship. But it forced to try to identify a reason why they might not live up to expectations. It is true that they got overwhelmed athletically by Baylor in the title game. Are they still relatively speaking in an unathletic college basketball team? You know, they lose from their starting lineup. Jalen sucks, Cory kiss for Joey. They presumably ad Nolan hickman hunter sallis kit Hong Kong. Hickman is my understanding is an above average athlete. Salus my understanding is a solid athlete, but something short of an elite athlete. And then Jen holmgren is incredibly unique gifted talented intriguing special prospect. I'm not sure I've ever heard anybody describe him as athletic. So you could be very unathletic in the front court with Timmy and holmgren. And then let's just say average athletically in the backcourt with nimh hard hickman Salas. Is that something that still exposes you in a certain type of matchup, whether it's in the elite 8 final four or on that Monday night again. Perhaps, because that was a real factor in the 2021 national championship game. They just could not deal with Baylor's athleticism. Now, Baylor was uniquely athletic. And obviously great basketball team. And so it might take that combination to put Gonzaga in a bad spot. You can't just be athletic and average. That ain't gonna do it. And you can't just be really. You've got to be really good and you probably really athletic. And again, just theoretically, I could see that maybe causing a problem for Gonzaga. And the problem with that causing a problem for you in that tournament is that as you know, it's single elimination. And it's over. You know, you only get 40 minutes. And it could all come crashing down and Gonzaga has reached a point. This is not fair. But the zacks have reached a point as a program where it's not national championship or bus that's not any way anybody should look at it. But every year they don't want a national championship when they on paper have a team good enough to do it is another year where people will remind you over and over again. It doesn't matter how many games they won. It doesn't matter how many good teams they beat. They still couldn't win the national championship. Gonzaga has had only team of the nation that can boast this. 5 consecutive seasons of at least 31 wins. In fact, 7 of its past 9 seasons involve at least 31 victories for the bulldogs. And the two that don't qualify were a 29 win season and a 28 win season and one of those included a trip to the sweet 16. So yeah, the way these things go, it's stupid. And I don't even think this is, I think this is just a vocal minority that I've mostly just shut out because this come on when you're constantly really, really, really good, and then you don't win a championship. No matter the sport. No matter team or individual too, you'll get this occasionally Phil Mickelson dealt with this until he finally won a major. But when you're always around, you're in the discussion, but be a team individual. But you don't win the thing, then that just becomes something that sticks to you. And now it is Gonzaga. It is clearly number one with a bullet Gonzaga. This applies to. And because Gonzaga is in the WCC and not a member of the PAC 12 or the mountain west or anything else, it just makes them that much easier of a target. But I don't think they're conference. I don't think Gonzaga's conference holds his back from winning the national championship. It's made to national championship games since 2017 and it could well make another one in 2022 to your point about the athleticism. It will get tested and we will have results on this. We'll be discussing this after the first weekend of the season. Texas is filled with ridiculous athletes. UCLA, plenty, athletic, and we can't wait to see that rematch there in Vegas. Then the three days after UCLA, they got to play a duke team that will have no shortage of good athletes on it. And then they get Alabama on a Saturday, the first Saturday in December. So the first four legitimate non conference opponents Gonzaga faces a will test them and at the very least can attest to have it having at least as much athleticism. That's not the only thing, but I'm glad you brought that up, because it wasn't me. When you see the way Gonzaga lost how it lost with Bailey, Bailey was a special team. Remember, Baylor went into last season pre season top three. And until Baylor had its paws, it was Gonzaga Baylor who's the better team than Baylor had to sit for like two and a half weeks. And Gonzaga never lost a game and so Gonzaga separated itself until we got into the elite 8, the sweet 16, and then people were like, okay, is this really a thing now where we might have another team or two that's on Gonzaga's level? And then once Baylor one, it was, oh, of course, here we are. But Gonzaga only lost once last season and to play plenty of athletic teams. I'll remind everyone of that. It lost the final game. And yes, it got rolled, Scott drew and the bears put on an impressive, really one of the more impressive title game showings we've seen in the past ten or 15 years. But I don't know if this is going to be something that ultimately hampers Gonzaga too much. But it is certainly something worth watching as we get going next week with the season. Yeah, if I thought it was a deal breaker, I.

"Spin a few minutes discussing some notable teams from outside of what are typically the top 7 conferences in college basketball because we focused on those leagues in the previous 7 episodes. We did the American, the ACC the big east Big Ten big 12 PAC 12 and the SEC in that order. If you missed any of them and you're interested, go find. So now we move on to the other good notable teams outside of those leagues and naturally any list of notable teams from outside of those 7 conferences we've already previewed, has to start with Gonzaga. The zags are preseason number one everywhere best I can tell. They're the betting favorite in the betting markets. They have the preseason national player of the year in drew Timmy. They have the number one prospect in the class of 2021 according to 24 7 sports in Chet holmgren. They got Andrew nim hard, who is 21st on our list at the top 101 college basketball players in the country this season, which means Gonzaga is the only school with three players in the top 21. The zacks have experienced they have NBA talent. They on paper have what it takes to win what would be the first national title in school history. So dad, let me start by asking you this. I know you like the zags. Basically everybody likes his eggs. But do you have any concerns? In other words, if they don't meet expectations, what will be the reason? Good one to lead off with if they don't make expectations, let's first define expectations. When the WCC tournament be a number one seed, make the final four. Fair? It's all reasonable, although I'm always hesitant and I understand most people all that matters is where you finish in the instantly tournament. I got it. I'm just always hesitant to draw a pass fail line at the NCAA tournament. Because it's a single elimination deal where wild things can happen and often do. And so let's just go back to a few years ago. Virginia had an awesome season. They were the number one overall seed in the NCAA tournament. Then they lost to UMBC. So it ended badly, but that was a great season that ended badly. It wasn't a bad season. So I guess where I would put the bar for Gonzaga as we sit here on November 2nd. I'd say, yeah, when your league comfortably and be a number one seed in the NCA turn. If you do that, you have you have been one of the best basketball teams in the country over an extended period of time. That is what everybody thinks you should be. And then we'll see what happens in the NCA tournament. Yeah, I only bring up tournament result, because as you well know, result a fair amount and sometimes not how you perform in the tournament. It dictates how people think about your program can dictate whether or not you have that job to get a better one or don't have that job. So Gonzaga in particular has now slid into it's the school when it comes to this. Most reasonable rational people who actually follow sport know what they're talking about, understand that Gonzaga is one of the best programs in the sport and it's conference affiliation has almost no real impact on how great the program can be. Yes, the zags run rough shot throughout the WCC. What do you want Gonzaga to do? I'm sure if the program gets an opportunity to switch leagues and get to a more reliable multi league, it will strongly consider doing that. But that's not the reality in 21, 22. So to circle back to your question, if it doesn't meet that, what will have happened? Let's toss injuries out, out the window, because that goes without saying there. Other than that, I think it comes down to the freshman class. Chad holmgren, you know, will he be the best, the second best of the third best freshman in America? Because that is the expectation for him. He is in the conversation to be the number one pick, certainly be a top 5 pick at worst. And when you combine him, Nolan hickman, the point guard, hunter sallis, it was more of a lead guard. Stepping into the situation and playing real minutes, I think will be a factor and how they do. I think we'll wind up being important. If you tell me that holmgren Salas and hickman most notably don't wind up being immediately impactful guys, don't even come close to the level that jaylen thugs was a season ago. Then I'll tell you that Gonzaga getting a number one seed will certainly be in some doubt because you also got into get into the schedule aspect of it. And I've mentioned this on a previous podcast, but as a reminder, this year's non conference schedule still has very good teams. Gonzaga will play against Texas. It will play against UCLA. We'll play against duke. We'll play against Alabama and Texas tech. Those are all very good teams. Another power conference team, Washington is on the docket. But what's not involved in any of those is a true road environment for Gonzaga, which means it's room for error in terms of getting a number one C there's a little less they've always been able to boost their non conference resume and their overall tournament profile Gonzaga normally will play at least one good non conference opponent on the road. That's not on the schedule this season. So if Gonzaga stump was a little bit with its freshman and it gets picked off once or twice the non con I think it's overall quad one numbers are going to suffer at the end of the season..

"That's what i've been told. But i don't think i've ever really questioned the validity of the league. I've questioned whether or just wondered whether it will ever be profitable and if it's not profitable. Is it sustainable now. The simple answer to that is sustainable. As long as the people who are financially backing it who incredible resources. It's sustainable as long as they want us to stay in it whether it's profitable or not but obviously most businesses that are profitable. Don't hang around for too long. I can tell you this. They're confident that they can be profitable. Maybe not in your one maybe not in your too but eventually they are confident they are building something but whether it's profitable or not it is a valid league. It is a real thing that exists that is creating really interesting opportunities for young people. And just like i said before if my son were ranked borderline top fifty in the country and a high school class and they were offering real money to get him to go to atlanta and train. We would seriously consider that and that itself makes validly whether it'll be profitable long-term. I couldn't begin to tell you but there's no denying it's valid. I mean they are enrolling real prospects future. nba players are in atlanta right. Now i don't know how many certainly some earning landed right now. Training with overtime elite agreed. All right let me to you up here next steps for gonzaga this comes from. Td henry next steps frigging zag in the wake of mark fuse arrests for dui he asks sequel squeaky clean. Image is essential to their brand. How does the university and program navigate this in a way. That respects fuse rights and privacy while protecting the brand. I got a few thoughts on this question. Gee what about you. I don't know. I don't. I don't mean to diminish the seriousness of dui charge. But i don't know that this significantly tarnishes the brand of gonzaga mark made a mistake. He is already publicly acknowledged that we assume he'll be punished in some way as this process unfolds. But you know he he. He had a few more beers began presumably then he should have and got behind the wheel of a car. He made a bad decision. In a moment it's a bad decision. That's not unique to him. I i it. It will be a senate on his wikipedia page forever. I don't know that it tarnishes the program in any real.

"Going to be exclusively a college Edition of life of the Iranian government podcast with the final four with the National Championship in the books and Bob if you can't tell I'm wearing a Baylor Bears sweatshirt here in honor of the best team in the country this year the elevators, but I'll get to it for example or not. For example, are you one of the people who believe that there were certain a a major favorite major Contender last year that they we could be talking about 2 in a row a and be absent the 7th was at 17 days absent the bulb the Hiatus might we be talking about them being the first team since 1976 to a run the table. Absolutely. I mean listen, I remember the first time I saw this team This kind of core group in person was a year ago November in Myrtle Beach and maybe Stella Nova and I fell on it wasn't exact same team. Obviously Adam flag. What year was it was? You know that some new pieces, but the core was the same of Jerry Butler Macio Teague marked vital and I remember telling Scott drew a home game. I thought he had something special here and that was early on that was back, you know right after Thanksgiving and I picked him to win it all this year. I picked him before the season. I picked him before the tournament wage. I just felt their guards were so dominant pump and they had four of them and they complement each other very, well. They moved the ball. They're very unselfish not the Gonzaga is but I just felt like their guards as a group. We're better than gonzaga's guards and Jalen Suggs was never going to see anything like Davion Mitchell. He had never seen anything like that before and that dude off. Listen, you love Marcus Smart. If you love Marcus Smart, you have to absolutely be in love with Davion Mitchell know it gets your attention. There's no doubt..
