The moral dilemma of COVID-19: Difficult decisions on economy and saving lives

"Save the economy or save a life that's the key moral dilemma facing officials as they weigh which steps to take next in response to the pandemic president trump is eager to restart the economy but medical experts warn if the U. S. moves too quickly more lives could be lost the New York times held a video conference with five experts from different backgrounds to discuss the difficult decisions that lie ahead prominent political activist and Reverend William barber took part in that discussion and he joins us now from Goldsboro North Carolina robin thank you so much for waiting this pandemic has led to an unprecedented national emergency what do you believe the moral response should be thank you so much for having me along what we have to know first and foremost explore the issues and the breakages and societal inequalities and America has a lot of rooms in that area when it comes forward racism is structural issues and what makes you as they explore that they do when you don't close the pictures you deepen and expand the life of the pandemic so the moral issue is that before the pandemic ever happened we have seven hundred people dying a day from popular hundred forty million people four and low income pandemic we don't put your mall thing we haven't done in the trump administration McConnell there is a push for mobile arrest reveals about treating also corporation and gave the people people sales workers we have whole middle seats basically we can get tested but we don't have any insurance are we don't have a guarantee that they can have the right all the water will be shut off so we're actually in the midst of this pandemic you in the qualities and you deepen any qualities actually calling the plan poverty was the pandemic could be for this pandemic at river in our own Paula Reid who works in Washington asked to advisor to the president kellyanne Conway about why there was such a lack of diversity on the president's council to re open the economy she didn't have an answer for that I mean we're hearing more and more about how minority small businesses are really challenged when it comes to accessing a little bit of this these billions of dollars that have been set aside to help them stay alive financially is the government doing enough to ensure that all Americans financially survive this pandemic no they weren't doing enough for even the pandemic there was no diversity and that's the one hundred and forty million poor and low income people but for his friend six three of sixty one percent of Americans look for a little while well the twenty six million people don't forget sixty six million white Americans all formal well but also fifty four percent of all people living wage what will people of color there's this ministry has dismissed that he brags about one one half American unit but actually while wages have gone down and people looking both ways and go all the way for and then the administration has not done anything to really be staff recommend before you get those businesses the fact is one of my friends says black people are dying to mostly be tested at least we are saying over and over and over in communities that you're having the highest rate ripping in Mississippi seven percent of those are African Americans desperate because of structural racism and what was his Surgeon General say black people need to stop smoking stop doing drugs and stop doing alcohol and does not address the systemic realities of the lack of health care the lack of hospitals that lack of treatment and the lack of testing which all the structural issues if anything this administration is is widening the racial gaps and creating more hall finish creating cooler we had a conversation yesterday with clergy and the clergy across this country we will open letter to the president and vice president the task the server general saying listen we need hospitals in our communities of color we need testing sites and community of color we need to just ask authorization act you can ask and then it later so that you can price that out and we can get those things to our home and we don't need I'll less about personal responsibility which is always the way some people try to dismiss dealing with structural realities of racism rubber nose points are really important to those points are really important to highlight because as you as you say there are deeper rooted issues that has sort of eggs been exacerbated by by this pandemic for example we know that people with asthma are can be severely affected by Kobe nineteen a lot of black and brown people live in communities that are close to highways and so that that will have an effect on asthmatic conditions for a lot of people a lot of black and brown people a lot of immigrants are those front facing service workers that we rely on those of us who are all working from home and it's easy to say to people you know Netflix and chill but for a lot of people who need that paycheck the bus drivers the postal workers that bodega owners they're going to work every single day and they are coming into contact with people who may be a symptomatic and so these are some of the issues that are sort of coming to light even though black and brown people knew those issues existed before cove in nineteen you remember sometime ago trump's interests with the war was over as I said while I'm sitting here forty three percent of our country formal welcomes sixty one percent of Americans work for low income and it's not because people are lazy it's because their jobs will not be under the ground helping job with this company thank you just mentioned the Surgeon General of the day say about people need to stop smoking author of smoke people come from plants and telecommunications you can close the plants that are needing like you saying errors in Louisiana it has the highest per capita rate of death in the country before and then and now still has the highest rate of deaths from the pandemic those people all the diseases because of the cancer carcinogens that are produced by the plant skin cancer our issues that we have to do and they're not giving him we called the central workers and many people are among the orderlies the groceries the fashion work with nurses what not who are who are essential workers get broader than just we say people essential workers and they represent the soul of America will win all the dissension workers going to seat the soul of America we tell them to go to the front line we don't guarantee them healthcare we have not guaranteed them safely we have guaranteed them a living wage we've done all those things for the corporations we bailed out before there was even a full blown panic diminish what we left DC central workers with our assistance and and and we have to come to okay just relax everybody has a right to lead it if they don't we don't know if they are sick it's not going to stay among the poor low income workers lack communities are sick the Germans lock on the state Tino communities are safe it's not going to stay there is going to continue to spray it and extend the life of this pandemic to the rest of us one reason we've been pushing according to scripture and I said whoa onto the old legislate evil and rock for their rights we are seeing a robbing poor and low income people basic fundamental human rights the right to a decent wage the right to healthcare the right to sick leave and again a pandemic it does hurt all you might be able to hide it during a pandemic you will be exposed and by those things continuing to exist it will extend the life and in the end this number also soccer so everybody has a right to me you know if they don't we don't and we better hurry up and relaxed it and this administration but over the

"Exhibition game. Kobe white the rookie from Goldsboro gets the start. He becomes the thirty fifth through freshman to start for Carolina. He'll be joining the back or by a senior Kenny Williams Midlothian Virginia Kinney eleven and a half points, two and a half assists per game last year. Cam Johnson, the graduate transfer from Pitt. Luke maye the preseason ACC player of the year in garrison Brooks. Are the five starters ball tipped around? Eventually it is the tar heels win the tip. They'll be moving from left to right. Have the basketball? First Luke maye left lane backs out picks up his dribble. Need some help goes to the freshman? Kobe white drives left baseline out to may long two point. Jumper county. May the quick trigger shot with his foot on the three point arc left wing. Tar heels up two nothing light will guard storm Murphy the point guard for Wofford bounces it up high to Jackson garrison Brooks knocks it away bodies to the Florida be a jump ball possession Wofford Brooks and Coby white dove to the deck to try to pick up. The loose ball before Jackson was able to a lot of pressure. On that path that starts the offense for Wofford by garrison Brooks, Uber having some trouble getting the ball lane finally able to fit it into the back court to Jackson. Wofford. We'll reset shot clock. It twelve as Murphy gets to the frontside up high to Jackson. He'll get an open look for three too strong from straight away. Rebound to Kenny Williams here come the tar heels. To may front court left wing. It goes to Kobe wipe the freshman holds it out. His waist bounces up. High to Cameron Johnson tried to whip pass in the post, Luke maye and turn it over. Tar heels had twenty two turnovers in the exhibition match up. Roy Williams was steaming about that pass was outside the range of may and went out of bounds. Still to nothing. Carolina as long jumper. The only bucket thus far eighteen fifty to go in the first app. Hoover. Deep on the left wing trying to get it to Mckee Kenny Williams checking over he goes to store. Murphy drives on Kobe white since it to MaGee quick trigger three and air. Ball foul on the rebound. Garrison Brooks called for the personal as he was tangled up with Cameron Jackson. And the first family became belongs to Brooks in the heels Wofford, we'll get a chance to inbounding baseline, right? One player. We expected to see in the starting lineup for Wofford six five Trevor stump stretch four really good player. He's been battling a bad back. So not sure whether or not we will see him tonight as the three by McGee is miss off the back iron Kenny Williams with the rebound, and he heads up front court stumbles. A bit saves it out to Luke. Maye swings at top left to Kobe white trigger three. No good. Good box out by Jackson earns the board for Wofford terriers. The other way quick three for Murphy and transition won't go. Luke, maye out battles. Luma for the rebound. Still tuneup and Carolina almost two minutes in Kenny Williams open look for three left sideline back iron. No, the rebound off the glass, but it goes to Jackson Wofford again, neither team can find the rain right now tuneup and tar heels two minutes in McGee loses his dribble because of the tight defy. Fence by Kenny Williams the ball rolls into the tar heel bench. It'll be a turnover for the terriers and Carolina has the ball. Eric a little bit of scattered here. From both teams that you would expect in the first few minutes at a quick pace. And that last last set by Kenny Williams ball, Baldwin, the mcgee's hands essentially right in front of the hash. Mark in front of the Carolina bench. Tarheels nearly turn it over as Williams. Trying to pass it to may solace past poked out of bounds by Hoover jumped into the scores. Table to try to save it. And now he'll ask for noise from the crowd. Six. The first seven shots for the two teams threes. Nobody's made one though. It's only a long two pointer. By may the only basket thus far to nothing may you'll try three right sideline. No Cameron Johnson with the rebound for the heels off to Kenny Williams. To care for the two handed congress. Is it a good decision there? He saw he could take from about the seventeen foot Mark just at the middle of the free. Throw line can drive the gap. Garrison did a nice job of sitting about four feet off the block to receive that pass another turnover as Brooks clashes in front of Cameron Jackson in the post that forces Murphy's pass off the Mark and out of bounds. So Carolina will have the basketball Joe pace going on right now. Jones. I mean, this is both teams. Yes, they are trying to figure things out offenses hasn't been as smooth as you'd hope offensively for either team. But pushing the basketball four nothing Carolina Cameron Johnson. On the right wing outside. The art. Kobe white line drive. Three rattles out. Ball bounces in the middle of the lane picked up by Jackson rebounds. Pretty even dust far. Our stats are malfunctioning. Don't have the official numbers but Wofford from the feel of it really holding its own the glass Mckee misses a driving layup. Here comes Carolina. Toby white streaks tripled it off teammates. Putting lost the basketball? Now, heading the other way is Murphy. He gets tangled in traffic at mid court and a foul called on Kenny Williams who was in the area. So to foul so far both on the heels won't on Brooks one on Williams. And the ball will belong to Wofford still four nothing. Carolina sixteen thirty eight to go in the first half. Kenny Williams tweeting with Kobe white to pass the basketball after that last turnover. Jackson tried to don't go on may couldn't do it. Rebound tipped out to Kenny Williams. One on four Williams has the ball from his hands, actually, dribbling it it. It kicked off a terrier foot and Wofford up with the loose ball still for nothing. Carolina. Hoover left handed dribble. Top of the key against Kobe white Bush's over to storm Murphy, he picks up his dribble. Cameron Johnson closes in has to push. It center jumped circle to Cameron Jackson shot clock at eight tar heels up for nothing tax and picks up. His dribble goes in the corner left and a traveling violation. As Murphy pump shoot Cameron Johnson closed on him. A Murphy jumped came back down and turn it over. When Murphy saw Cam Johnson coming in new I realized Murphy's five. Eleven and so you've got six eight or better Cam Johnson coming at you. He just tried to get him off balance up in the air, and it was a little too much to try and assess caused the turnover still four nothing Carolina. Kobe white on the hard drive grows it up over his head out of bounds. And it'll be another turnover unless they credit white with a shot. On that one. He just got caught in the air drew contact and threw it up wildly with his back to the basket. It'll belong to Wofford after this time out fifteen forty two to go in the first half teams a little wild. Four nothing Carolina. Tar heels have four turnovers to obey are four zero from learfield. When the leaves on the court. Play from highway appropriate assist. The twenty nine Nissan road. Now with available Nissan. Intelligent, mobility analogies. Like, bro pilot assist? You start institute. Been highway traffic all on its own Nissan road. Nissan, proud partner of Carolina athletics. Pro pilot assist isn't.

"Three or four officers. Goldsboro Raleigh is our main office, Greensboro, and Moorhead. And then find a little icon that says financial data profile print that out fill it out. Because it'll help you think about what we're going to talk about with you, your goals, your asset, your income, your debts kids, blah, blah, blah. And then when we meet we're gonna go over that stuff, and we're going to pick your brain and say, what are your plans how you going to get there? How you're going to get from a to be in the best situation. It will we'll give you a lot of input. And it'll be like an hour hour and a half meeting at the max. And then if you really are liking what you hear us say you can come back for a second complementary meeting with a more detailed written proposal, and then we're not gonna bug you anymore. But if you want to become our client, that's great. We'll take you. And if we think you're okay, and you don't need us. We actually will tell you that but nine times out of ten as good as you're planning is. Usually there's things that need work is kind of like an athlete. You know, we the world championships were just held in the sport of wrestling in Budapest, Hungary, and ninety nine point nine percent of Americans don't know that. But we had three gold medals two silvers and three bronze really a great showing. But as good as those gold, medalists athletes, are they still have a coach every one of those guys has a personal coach because you just beat the Russians and the Turks and the Japanese and Chinese kid, and you could walk out with your gold medal and be Mr. cool for a while. But somebody's going to beat you later. If you're not coached, you always have flaws. The greatest tennis players the greatest skater need improvement. They have an adviser. So that's what we're saying you need an advisor we're talking. Today about something this very complex generational financial planning with your whole family, and, you know, raising kids or maybe you in a you are an adult kid. You got crazy parents. There's a lot. There's a lot of crazy stuff in your family. Your children excluded. That's right. Now little grandkids are perfect. But there are only perfect until they go to middle school. And then they become. What what should we call them?.

All in that range. There's quite a quite a few water rescues going on. So not only do we have some of the winds to deal with you know, but we have the freshwater flooding now. And it's just a, you know, becoming a really serious situation. I I think everybody was taken back by the freshwater flooding in new Bern last night. Do you happen to know what the actual height when that water finish backing up there? I'm not sure. But I think you know, we've been so busy here. "More thing there are lights in portions of Goldsboro. But on the way here a lot of traffic lights were completely out that makes those intersections dangerous. That's another reason why you need to stay inside. If you need you have power, many people here can't walk television. Hopefully got their mobile devices charged up so they can at least get the information. Stay put don't get out here. Don't fool around in these conditions potentially dangerous, John and Barbara. Live in Wayne County force what a desperate situation there. Just you. Just don't know what's going on across all these communities that have been hit hard. Let's go to Anna Rivera. She is live in Wilmington this morning and a lot of people without power in that area. And the rain is just going to continue to you all dancers could get another fifteen inches in the Wilmington area. Which is going to be absolutely devastating for this community. Because not only on are. We seeing some flooding that starting to begin. But the ground is getting really soft, and that's causing issues. Like this take a look at this massive tree that came down at the sonic on market right now. This is just a huge root system. I'm gonna take take you around show, you how big this tree actually is that came down. Take a look at that. Absolutely. Massive tree coming down on the sonic awning over here on market street completely destroying this. In many areas in Wilmington that we've seen these big trees, not just. That you would expect these massive old trees falling down on businesses. And now, we do want to tell you that these trees have also caused some tragedy. Yesterday about the mother and her infant child that passed away when a tree fell on their home. And I actually spoke to a friend of the mother who told me that she was just with her in August. They went to a comedy show. And she was just so elated by having this this wonderful little baby and she had just gotten married. Her husband was also injured when that tree fell they were all in the back bedroom, and that happened I talked to some first responders on the scene yesterday about it. And he told me that the tree actually fell on her husband's legs Nathan they may have to amputate his legs right there. But luckily, they brought into actually lifted free up and get him from on underneath that tree. So they think that he is expected to be okay. But again that mother and infant child they did not make it out of there, which is just horrible tragedy that we're seeing now, I know a lot of you are probably there are many people that went to shelters in Wake County to get away from this storm from New Hanover county. And it was a really good idea. We're seeing there's no power. Our in most of Wilmington right now fell service if terrible and of course, much of the damage looks like this throughout the city when you're driving through the city. Most of the lights are out the traffic lakes. It's very dangerous right now. The city of Bonington is under a curfew until six o'clock in the morning that starts at ten o'clock every night because dangerous to drive down the roads right now, there's there's trees down power lines down. And you don't know where that has pulled. So you don't know what you're going to come across. And we're definitely taking it very easy and trying to stay safe in this dangerous situation. Don't think that just because the storm hasn't for the most part bloom during this area that it is safe to come back yet. There's not much to come back to you, not many businesses open to even get food or supplies at this point or gas. So just as long as you can I would stay out of this area, Barbara John Rivera. Thank you for that report. You know, you hear about talent. And nobody wants to hear about that. And many here the details what was going on with these people, and it just breaks your heart. Absolutely. And we've got a ways to go here. Gloria Rodriguez has been reporting from Lumberton she's move now to the lumber river where we're still waiting for it to crest. And we're talking about wreck. Heartbreaking levels for that breasts. Yes. And that could be devastating right here in Lumberton. All the major flooding during her came out about ten years ago. It's ever keeping a close eye all the lumber because. Overflows its banks. We could get some major flooding here in Lumberton check out the levels here at the river. We were here yesterday. I can't tell you that the levels have gone up and that is expected to keep climbing. I got some good information from Don Schwarzenegger who tells me that? The lumber river is currently at eight feet. It's expected to crest at twenty four point three feet by Sunday nights. And flood stage is at thirteen feet gives you an idea of how much water we are getting here in Lumberton. It just keeps pounding rain. We just keep getting brain since yesterday. And we've been driving around Lumberton, positively we've seen a lot of areas that still have power. There are some streetlights down here. You'll see that are still on. So not too many people that we have talked to here have actually lost power. But I can tell you in Fayetteville where we were. And there were definitely several outages are hotel lost power since yesterday. And a lot of the businesses are just in the dark and here in the entire county promising Robinson county more than twenty one thousand people without power at this time of power outages. A major concern for people throughout North Carolina's. Of course, we'll keep you updated on what's going on here. We're going to keep an eye on the river and let you know how looking out here. Thank you. Well, there's an overnight to breaking news situation. This tree falling on a house in the leesville area on farm ridge road in Raleigh a couple and the young girl was sleeping together in the master bedroom. Tree-felling pinned him to the bed. But fortunately, blessedly they were not seriously hurt when that happened. Indeed. Now in Wayne County, we've been talking a lot about Wayne County flash flood emergency. You're seeing here is an evacuation at a nursing home. This is the willow creek nursing home in Goldsboro the nursing home brought in two buses to move their patients half of them to Greensboro on the other hand Smithfield. And we learned actually that Wayne County leaders suggested this specifically evacuate sooner than it did because it's in a flood zone. And apparently, they did not heed that warning. And now they're having to rescue and move these patients to different areas. Glad they were able to get them out. Now, two people killed in a house fire overnight. This is the Brier would neighborhood is believed elderly couple lived in the home. And although we're not confirm yet. We believe that. There may be the ones who perished in it. We also learned that a firefighter on the scene. Here was taken to Cape for valley medical center with minor injuries. We're working to find out right now. What caused this fire storm related was something else where we have those updates air them for you on air and online flooding inside homes look at this. I mean, we've seen it outside homes. This isn't Belle haven and Beaufort county, but there's just nothing like it when you have to come home to something like this because it's just simply devastating for your property for your possessions. But also, we don't even know if you're going to be able to, you know,.
