Joey Sulipeck Investigated for Tweet Against Draymond Green
"Let's talk about Joey solo pack. Now, you know Joey, you were a meteorologist, your weather guy here in the Memphis area for a very long time before switching over and doing the right thing and coming to radio. Exactly. Exactly. I knew joy for I've known Joey for over 20 years. We did not work at the same station, but I would see him at conferences. I would see him locally and he's always been professional. He's the kind of guy that will walk up and ask you and know, you know, your family's name, how they're doing. He's the kind of guy that you want in the market. So he's a good guy. Very much so. So he's a big Memphis Grizzlies fan, and of course, there was a lot going on. It was a pretty tense rivalry between the warriors and the grizzlies. And he wrote a tweet. Yes, he did. And this goes all the way back to May 7th, and this was when the grizzlies were in the second round against the Golden State Warriors and draymond green is a troublemaker on the court. He runs his mouth a lot, he'll push, he'll nudge whatever he can to get an advantage. And one of the grizzlies players had just gotten ejected for the first time that they had mouthed off to the official. Joy writes, chew on this, draymond runs his knuckle dragging open mouth all game long, but mild mannered, Kyle Anderson disputes one call and gets ejected. Next level, Jack assery. That's it. So basically, he was saying the guy's a Neanderthal. Yes, okay. All right. Well, well, the local sports guy for the commercial appeal. Got ahold of that tweet and turned it into this big racial controversy that literally went nationwide. Everybody was talking about poor Joey solo pet who in the aftermath apologized. He should not have apologized. He did nothing wrong, and then deleted his account, he should not have done that. He did nothing wrong.

"Hello everyone, and welcome to the rage for justice report. I'm Carmen Valverde, the executive director of consumer watchdog, and with me today is my co host Jamie court, president of consumer watchdog hey Jamie. Hey, Carmen. So this is our weekly conversation about things we're exposing confronting and changing and the one thing most people want to confront is inflation. And most particularly the high cost of gas in California. I didn't check the latest numbers, but it seems like, I mean, guess it's definitely over 6 bucks a gallon, maybe 6 and a half, Jamie? It's $6 and 17 cents according to the EIA, the energy department. And that was for last week, so it's gone up considerably. And that's about a buck 40 more than the average U.S. gas price in California. So we're paying a dollar for any more. And for no good reason. For no good reason. So you call it the Golden State gouge, why is it the Golden State gouge, Jamie? Why are we paying a dollar 50 more than the rest of the country? Because the oil refineries can charge a dollar 50 more than the rest of the country, unfortunately. That's only reason is we have 5 refiners, oil refineries, they control 96% of the gasoline produced in the state. 5 refineries, maybe some of them have two refineries at like ten refineries in the state control. All the gasoline in the state. And then the refineries also have control over the price at the pump. They control through contracts the price at 70% of the retail gas stations that branded gas stations. So it's all about control and power. And the reason we know that the prices are so high in California because of gouging and not because of environmental rules and taxes is because we got the first quarter profit reports from the over finders. And it says that. It literally tells us in many of these profit reports that these companies are making a killing, literally. PBF is a refiner in San Francisco and LA, big refineries..

Georgetown Professor Quits Over Free Speech

A Voter's Guide for California Republicans
"I would like you to please vote for, first of all, every Republican running for Congress. It's very unlikely we'll pick up any seats, but I sure would like young Kim and Michelle Steele and Mike Garcia and David valadao and of course Kevin McCarthy is going to win. He's got a pretty secure district. But they really took a cleaver, the alleged independent redistricting committee like everything else in California is completely bonkers. And so they're trying to screw an outline the other good ones after the dust settles. There's no tell them what happened in these primaries. But do remember young kin and Michelle steel and Orange County, Mike Garcia, Dave valadao in Ventura and the central valley, Kevin McCarthy, of course. But here's the key deal. You got to vote for lawn heat Chen for controller. You got to vote for Nathan hochman for attorney general. These are two serious people, and those are the two jobs. You're not going to meet Gavin Newsom. There's no one running. I don't know who's going to be the nominee against Gavin Newsom, but you can't beat that much money.

"And I just think it's indicative of I don't think he's very good. He can be very good offensively in this matchup. I don't think that look two for 12. I don't think he's going to shoot two for 12 in every game. In this game, he took three shots. And I know that that's not he has 7 assists. I understand all that. But I just don't think that when the Celtics are switching everything when he's going to the split action, they open the third quarter with a set hammer play where he spins baseline off of the post touch and just like throws the bot a bands because the Celtics sniffed it out. There's just so much stuff that he can do against a lot of other teams. And I know he had one keeper lay up for sure. In the third quarter. But they take away so much of how he's successful offensively against so many other teams because of their switching and their versatility. And so yeah, like I think the Celtics are right to be like, we aren't really that focused on dream on green right now, because I do think defensively and to me it was less about, I think they were just trying to downplay how much is antics were annoying them. But I do think he was getting, he was probably most successful site getting under their skin a bit. I'm with you that I do think that, you know, a lot of the draymond offensive genius is countered by the Celtics defensive genius. I do think him being a little bit more aggressive, a willingness to put the ball on the floor. Like that white play, I agree. It's like not necessarily great play, but yeah, he was aggressive. It worked. He put the onus on the refs and he got a foul call, that is that value. That he doesn't do enough of that. And again, you don't want him to hijack the offense. There's a fine line, but I do think that there is something to be said about when he is, at the same time, like him also not letting the defense just sag off and him literally doing nothing about it. I think is even worse. So yeah, I mean, the desperation was there and I do think him having those loans of aggression, being willing to at least take it to the rim, be a part of that movement and not just to facilitate her. I think that is also needed. That's not to say he needs to try to turn into a score. Like you said, he only took three shots. But I liked that aspect from him offensively because they can, I think it's better than him being stag. Oh, yeah, he's got to be himself, and that is, that's who he is, for sure. I just don't know if that's going to be enough as this series unfolds. But we will see. Are there any other players that you want to I have an email that I want to read in a minute? But are there any other players that we have and hit that we talked about just kind of stands out? We just talked about GB two a tiny bit, maybe a mention. I do think you mentioned he's going to be an important part. We were texting about him during game one. He hit his one three. I think he helped some defensively..

The series is now tied one to one heading back to Boston for game three on Wednesday night. I just want to flow through. You said the vibes earlier before we started recording. I just want to flow through this game with you. We'll keep it very loose. Where do you want to even begin this conversation? You were in attendance at game two. What is your bird's eye view take away of everything that you witnessed? What is on your mind, top of mind when you think about what occurred in that game? Kind of actually how I don't think the battle ground of this series has been set yet. I think game one was very weird and I think game two was not weird so I have the right word. I think both the games were very distinct. There's no feel to this series yet. For example, in the Miami boss in series, we kind of knew that that series was coming down to Boston's turnovers and my music ability to score in the half court. In this series, I think we've had two very different games, and I don't think the rotations are fully set yet. It's just, to me, a series that I don't know that I don't know what to carry over is gonna be basically. I didn't think a lot of what, you know, obviously there were adjustments, but you know, I don't think we've gotten to that point yet where we know what each team's best is and how the other teams necessarily going to take it away. In terms of what happened on the floor yesterday, I mean, you made Joker talked a lot about the turnovers after the game rightfully so. He was clearly very upset. I mean, that's Boston. It's always their number one issue in the losses..

"Touch base on abortion politics. Which i've come just raging to the forefront because texas and the supreme court and done a little two step. That has think roy dictated what we're going to be talking about over the next six months american politics well and i find it interesting. You know we. We've talked about just over the last forty or seven minutes how do you get a blue electorate Pretty energized and. I don't think it was any accident that one of the first public office holders politicians to go out and talk about what texas did And what the supreme court helped texas do in in not issuing an injunction around the new state law. He was out talking about the the politics of abortion and what could happen throughout the country and in california even though with a with a legislative supermajority. That's not likely to happen at a state level in california but it gives you a sense murphy. And and peter you know this is an issue that will greatly animate the democratic base and it may well be needed in a big way. Democrats are going into a an off year mid term and These don't usually workout as well for the party. In power and i think august was a pretty terrible month for for biden. The approval ratings have have dipped numbers with independence dipped and the real remedy is not different than california. How do you get that democratic base energized and this might be Just a huge huge political gift while the deb's always have the same problem which is their presidential year voters. Don't show up in the midterms mostly younger often of collar. And so republicans always have more muscle in a midterm elections. That said i would bet dollars to donuts that mitch mcconnell was just shopping etc when this This thing blew up with abortion because in the house races there are plenty of prolife. District's you can argue. Oh would we even help republican turnout but in a few of those suburban districts where they're going to be battles it's anthrax in the senate races. It's double anthrax. we wanna win. The pennsylvania the phillies suburbs on an abortion war. No way the democrats will also have a couple of hundred million dollars now which is something that senate campaign folks keep a sharp eye and then finally this thing and bind started to do it to his credit. This texas thing is vulnerable from the right. Kizer is not intellectually honest. Conservative is going to say yeah. Turn your neighbor in hackneyed law which is engineered basically skirt constitutional enforceability. is not the conservative way. It's not the american way it's a mob rule thing and so i think this is particularly good news for the democrats trying to take senate control because those those key places are where. This could be really bad now. The the footnote is the supremes. Did not endorse the thing. They just refused to intervene. What i thought was ridiculously on constitutional law but there is going to be an appeals process. I think the odds this thing gets nuked on the way to the supreme court hearing fairly high but in the political world who cares big scary abortion law. Big scary hint to pro-choice voters from the supreme court. That's all you need to set the east ablaze. So to speak just in time for the senate races to us bo burnham as a political strategist look at a white woman's instagram after this texas long supreme court ruling every white woman's instagram and my instagram feed. Every story was about this And it reminded me of sort of women's march era twenty seventeen people were posting about how republicans were trying to control bodies You know college educated. Suburban women were the lynch pin of the two thousand. Eighteen midterm vote for democrats for biden. They they used to vote republican actually back in bed before back before trump the And if those folks are motivated in the suburbs heading into the midterms again. It's just gives biden something to both like run on and run against and actually as robert like you know you're in the obama white house in the first couple years of his administration when and his approval ratings. Were going down like how like. How should the biden white house approach this like they have something to to point at and say like republic like in other words. There's not necessarily donald trump out there to run against. He's fading a little bit. But you do have governors and all of these states enacting a lot of very conservative legislation. It's unpopular like how like. How do you message that from the white house. It's a good question. I mean i think you know. The biden team. Smartly reportedly got out early. And said you know we're going to even the president saying there's a whole of government effort To turn back this texas law now the reality of it is. There isn't a lot that can be done Legislatively based on sort of where we are I think smartly pelosi and schumer have said they're gonna put essentially roe v wade on the floor of the senate and vote And i think it's smart to get people wild up. I think it's smart to get people on the record. As you said murphy. Some close senate races the top six most tightly contested presidential states in twenty twenty all have senate races in two thousand twenty two so getting getting those folks on the record is imperative again. I don't think legislatively there's a lot they can do but again. I think this will probably go into a broader narrative as the white house gets closer to twenty twenty two. which is. Let's throw all of these. You mentioned peter. All of these kind of draconian ideas then aren't really conservative. They're not really republican. They're just downright scary. Let's throw them all into a pot. And swirl that around and that becomes the kind message. You've got governors out there who they don't understand science they're you know they're they're not helping with the commonsense measures that would fix this pandemic they wanna take your rights away. They wanna do a whole lot of scary things and Meanwhile democrats are out trying to make the economy better for middle class. Americans and i think that's the that's the this isn't going to be a short term thing. I think this will be a long term thing that lasts well into november. That's definitely where they wanna go. Totally the issue is going to be. And i think this is underrated by the national media. Which doesn't try to have a partisan bias pretends to have a big twenty county college educated. Secular you know left of center bias culturally is the democrats can be scary to in the house. We found that in twenty twenty when they couldn't get traction off the biden win. And if the squad excetera we go into this three trillion dollars spending spree the dempsey and whenever you proposed new spending you win. Boats not necessarily true And and that's going to start. We'll be talking about it a lot. Next week This week as three point five. Trillion starts shrank. Progressives get mad the squad can be very scary about seizing the means of production so i think it could be a fear off. Republican cultural stuff versus democratic economic stuff. And we will be here watching it now. Because we're out of time except for the mailbag we'd.

Three million republicans so forty four percent to thirty five percent with the rest sort of not stating a preference. So you had a much closer state than you do now. Democrats have only gotten a few percent bigger. But as mike pointed out. That's ten point. Three million democrats where republicans have literally kept their same number. They're five point three million repeal. We've gone up by ten thousand people in the anti trump and overall lost about nine percent of the state. Electorates is both of you. Talked about the newsom campaign is is is focused on your. This is as. I said it in a newsletter. We'll have a little a little later as well. This is not a rocket science. Reggie right. you don't need a shit on a micro targeting and a lot of fancy polling you just look at these registration numbers and say okay to peter's point like i gotta get out the inter. What would would exist of the energized democratic base. And then i've gotta figure out who isn't in that of that ten point three million democrats and i gotta make sure they understand. This is right in front of them and they don't even need a huge turnout. Just need a mediocre one because they're so big You know even a mid sized elephant can trample you to death to totally mix destroy metaphors but donkey aren't big enough for that to work. Now let me give you the kind of if you believe. The politics is often ironic chaos. God laughs at us. Here's a scenario. I think could happen. This recall could be the best thing to happen to newsom ever because he was stuck in mediocre land making mistakes. There's others a big scandal on unemployment benefits being ripped off billions and billions of dollars. It was a mess so now he's gonna win this thing i believe and he will be able to say. I slew the big red trump monster. Now the reporters sacked will say yes but only by seven points you know should have been thirty and yet nobody cares. He won he. He's going to beat back the ours. Then you've got folks like your barbara who were all pissed off. If he is smart he will do a re clock now and older wiser. Here's what i've learned. And because everything in america that happens first happens in california. I'm going to lead the way to post copa america. Put the middle class. I he's gonna shut the woke craziness that rules the party. He got him into some of this trouble and then he will get reelected. Because there's nobody big enough and democratic politics to take him out in the primary unless it's total keystone cops And so he'll win for free now. Validated and meanwhile joe biden stays in the vortex of hell here politically where he's facing a mid term. That will gavin wins easily. Because it's a rigged election. It's not going to have real opponents. biden's gonna have a bad mid term because of other things even biden doesn't control but he's made a little worse at least lately. Were see how next year goes Game is going to be in new hampshire in twenty twenty three as the fresh new face. Democrats are looking for If it becomes apparent by does not going to run again. That's where he wants to be and if these smart and goes centre-left and uses this he he can have a total re clock in a relaunch instead of sitting around his office rendering how his old rival kamla harris lapped him. So this can still be crazier near robert. I mean your pal bend. The ball told me that article. I wrote that he suggested. At least the california democratic party would be healthier with a stronger republican opposition because they today are more beholden to the quote unquote woke left. Mike talks about right. And i think new some has pivoted a little bit on the at least the crime and homelessness issues that have affected california wad of his photo ops or him you know cleaning up trash under underpasses and like like dealing with some of the basic like civic society stuff that you know. I think a lot of voters expect from their government and a lot of progressives on city councils in the state have you know taken quote unquote compassionate approaches to crime and policing homelessness. That are actually run. Afoul of where. A lot of moderate voter sentiment is i think The other note on. Mike's point which is interesting There's been three gubernatorial recalls in history. this is the third Remember scott walker in wisconsin back in twenty th. Well he was. He fought back a recall in wisconsin. And that you know. He won by a big margin in polar much more polarized state but that did help him become a celebrated republican conservative warrior. And he's helped us that those donor connections that fox news exposure in pivoted that to running for president did not work out for him. Obviously but it really helped him raises national profile. I guarantee you. There are more people in the country. Right now Mostly just because they listen to acts on tap who now. no gavin. Newsom is compared to six months ago. And and you know in a polarized electorate of polarized country like Most people aren't gonna pay attention to the nitty gritty of how many points he won by. Or why would the recall is about. He can't say. I slayed the republican trump beast. And you know if you're a you know a manhattan donor. That might be an appealing kind of thing for you. Or if you're new hampshire voter That's a that's an interesting thought. He makes a good first impression. You know he's he's a new act once you get out of california so we're safe but they could be really good for him if he does a big re clock off the win superior. You agree to that. This is This the newsom team is his righted. The ship they're They're not likely to lose this recall. Despite the fact that. I think i got six. E mail solicitations from people purporting to raise money on behalf of governor newsom yesterday in my In my inbox you would have thought this race was you would have thought they were five points down that probably ten points up again like two weeks ago through ago gap i i would have thought that um now i mean they could win by five ten. You know it's just broil numbers it. Yeah it just depends on much. The waking blue giant shows up elders. Not helping himself either. Not that like he's was. He made a comment for example over the weekend. Where he said. Diane feinstein might die next year. And i would be governor. And i would get to appoint her replacement like that's something that new some would have liked to say himself but kind couldn't and elder to set it and he's just like spooked the shit out of democrats in the state. You know elder is intellectually pretty honest. Which means he's doomed because he's a doctrinaire conservative and he got tangled himself up on slave..

"California type candidates Like hippies and for models and things like that but to your to your point. Larry elder the sage from south central emerged as the top candidate after getting the race. Because this guy has like forty years of talk radio name idea in the state and very quickly he emerged as the frontrunner because one he had name recognition to raise a lot of money and was able to get on tv in california which is incredibly expensive. Mike knows better than me. How many media markets are here but it takes a lot of money to run a state wide campaign. there's not a ton of sort of hand hand combat and door knocks necessarily. It's a lot of paid media And with the divided sort of field of options Elder kind of emerges as the front runner but only really with like eighteen percent of the vote according to a poll back in july which gets to another point about this race in a problem with politics generally is is. There's been a lack of polling really in this race has probably been about three or four good polls and they've been few and far between and there was one in july I think from uc berkeley. That showed among likely voters. Republicans were very close To democrats in terms of wanting to excuse me. The republicans were likely voters. Were almost even split as to whether to remove newsroom from office and that freaked out everybody freaked out the newsom campaign. Got the media to start covering it and you know elder was seen as the front runner at that point too because that poll showed him at like eighteen percent of the vote. And so you know. The newsom campaign had to sort of change tax and figure out. Oh shit we have a real race on our hands. How do we do this. And their stategy changed a lot from when the race began murphy. Let's go back for a second. Because i think you touched on this and i think it's an important strategic decision that the democrats made and that is fook all your energies on this first question. Newsom is telling people just vote no on the recall and ignore the second question which you talked about which is do you want. Larry elder Who peter just introduced to us. Do you want the perennial candidate. The Do you want the former mayor of san diego while john cox who's running with a live bear unleash. The beast is also. He's got a bus with a live bear and i would predict about three hundred pounds of beer. Tranquilizers the bear wakes up is the last day of the cox campaign off. But anyway your your your point being. Yeah yeah they. They had a strategy in two thousand three. The the lieutenant governor then lieutenant governor cruz bust cruz. Bustamante decides the poser looking shaky. And i'm gonna throw my name in the ring for the recall. So that in the event that the governor governor davis at that point was on very shaky political ground maybe in a state of of democrats. Del recall the governor. But elevate the lieutenant governor this campaign noose. Don't get distracted by that. Let's focus on question one. How do you think that's changed the calculus well. It has been a shrewd. Move by newsom. And i think it was always what they're going to do. Because there's at all right. Everybody hates gavin when we have a recall so if we give them any landing place where they can hang us and get somebody new who's less objectionable were in trouble as long as that's a democrat because the best slogan would have been fired gavin but get a good democrat instead because overwhelmingly democratic state more so than used to be so instead they put out the freeze and i had two major candidates on the democratic side. Call me to think about popping. Up is the fallback in the recall. But an all talk in a minute white. Why that all kind of didn't happen but anyway with nowhere to land. No arnold see in the two thousand three recall we. Arnold was not a partisan figure. It didn't divide up red and blue. And you never wanted california red and blue. Because they're such a big blue boat. There's no longer an election. It just becomes a tribal deal. So arnold was interesting in new in the california dream and all that kind of stuff so he was a safe place to land after. You voted for recall. The governor what we have here is a bunch of people fighting a republican primary So they're all running base campaigns. We had caitlin jenner showed up. Got the big media. Pop went nowhere hired par scale in the trump criminals. Of course they got in. The direct mail raised and spent a lot of money now. The campaigns broken dead. You know pretty predictable. You didn't have to be crespin. The no that was going to happen Then had john cox got the bear who's run before lost some last time going to lose again. Then you had the one who could have been a competitive candidate. Kevin faulkner was a well regarded merit san diego moderate republican but he hired the cruise guy so they put a red hat on him and he's never been seen before in california which is too bad. I'm voting for him but He never had a chance to get noticed and they had larry elder who started by the way is kind of an interesting sane libertarian talk show host but in the last ten years have been swirled into the the realities of the base of the republican party. But he had some name. I d i mean. The other arnold had was he was famous. None of these republicans running have the money or the fame or the base to be an attractive statewide candidate in place. That's as big as a country. So the gavin people knew all right as long as there's not a safe democrat to land on we can make the race about you think we're bad how'd you like a governor to santa's trump nut here And so what's been interesting about this. One is there have been kind of two moments originally. Kobe hit huge homeless crisis. By the way which they're the sheriff of la is a democrat as a great line. You know what no nothing turns a liberal into a conservative faster than the homeless guy taking a shit on their lawn and which by the way was the lead of of i think the physical right now and he said he said yeah. Nothing changes your political viewpoint more than a transient taking a shit in your front yard. And not interrupt mike. I mean i live in venice and he villanova the sheriff. I mean he was elected in two thousand. Eighteen is a progressive democrat. Now he's like a fox news guy but you know if you're you're a homeowner and you're dealing with crime and homelessness those sort of things and you live in venice california. You voted for joe biden. And now you're looking around and you're like like things don't seem to be working very well like and we can get more into. I think like why newsome was in trouble About a month ago. And i think that's part of it. There's a lot of sort of disaffected democrats who were pretty frustrated with the california experiment. Who are willing to take a flyer on saying. Let's get rid of the sky just like have someone else in office for a year quickly has been interesting chronology so.

"That's anywhere between one hundred and fifty percent above the national average to two hundred and fifty percent above national average. And why is this. Because of the extreme environmental environmentalists have a stranglehold over sacramento and have a stranglehold over gavin. Newsom keep our kids in public schools. Safely larry elder and the republicans. Wanna walk off the same kobe. Clear as the sat us and those folks in those other red skates. Hey hacker ruse. Hello we are back after our. You know what welfare state easy labor driven vacation of my to communist partners in crime here but it is good to be back. I enjoyed the vacation to to be honest. And we are well california here. We come because today. We're gonna talk a lot about the recall. You just heard the two top candidates Radio talk show. Host and republican larry elder and embattled governor a gavin newsom. Who are battling it out for. The recall on the fourteenth plus abortion is back in politics. We're gonna talk about all of that and we thought we needed a really good guest so we reached into the world that the kids call the interweb and we got one of the best old friend both of ours gibbs e who got. Well this murphy. I will go slow on this. Because i know you're still trying to get over napster shutting down so we look we got. We got one of the best in the business here. Peter hamby formerly of cnn He hosts a show called. Good luck america on snapchat. Don't worry murphy explained that to you After we're finished recording that on aol right yes. You've got mail. He in writing now is a contributing writer for a startup called puck news. And i'm just gonna say this. I'll say this at the end but i'll say this at the beginning read what peter writes He spends a lot of time smartly. Lives in california's outside of the beltway. So it's not all this kind of pundit bs it's what's going on america thanks for for joining us. Thanks for having me on and go auburn. Suck having a guy in our to. We'll get to college football. He's part of an incredible new thing called puck which is a website of high level journalists dedicated. Totally to the humor of don rickles at least here so puck news. Check it out everybody. It's really cool. So gibbs take us in we're how do we. How do we explain this craziness. Well that's a great question so we're going to california today i'm You know we're we're really just a week away from this. Recall coming to an aunt. And you know peter wrote recently on california lives in california. Murphy is You know you're you're a recall guru if you will well. I live in california. I vote here. And i worked for arnold in the i recall. That's what got me to. California was minding my own business and tony. Georgetown waiting to be invited to a party with peter in the vanity fair guys and all of a sudden i got literally knock at my door at night wasn't even a phone call and i was bundled up and next day. I was walking around in my washington. Dc uniform khakis blue blazer and rubber soled shoes on the beach in malibu looking at a massive party that jeffrey katzenberg was having And one thing led to another dick reardon brought me out. In the former republican mayor valet was the leader in the polls at that point but he had an announced and one thing led to another next thing. you know. i'm looking at the mr freeze costume. In arnold's office in santa monica bennis kenneran on the line there and And went to work for the shorts but anyway enough about me. Let's talk about california so you to you to live out there you you sort of. You've seen this up close murphy. You saw this when it happened. One other time in history in two thousand three but give us a little bit of background. How does this whole process work. Well let me let me start with the political science one. Throw it to peter for his. Point of view is a keen observer. Living here now. So in nineteen eleven kind of close your eyes and imagine the hacks on tap radio theatre here. A bunch of guys handlebar. Mustaches got together in california. All men at the time and said on balderdash we need reform stein progressive ideas so they passed a constitutional amendment creating the initiative and referendum process. You wanna get around the whale. Oil trust were taken to the voters. Then they got their louder up and somebody said hey we need a constitutional amendment to be able to recall the governor who might be in the pocket. Our friend up. Claire says too much and they did that and then then they got really drunk and said and we've got give women the right to vote and that pass to and i'll happened in nineteen eleven here And now since nineteen eleven. We have had rarely the ability to recall a governor. And you do it by going out and getting you know a lot of signatures. I think it. I think it was about a million one. This time you get voters to sign. They turned in like two point. Three million because a lot of them get knocked out and Then there's a process and you can put a recall election on the ballot. It happened two thousand. Three with gray davis who had had a unpopular car tax and a few other things and it kind of lightning struck and then arnold and over one hundred other people ran And the the works are to balance the first ballot. Nestle be september fourteenth. Though here we vote by mail tremendously even more now during kobe. Because they've loosened up the rule which is a bit controversial basically male. Everybody you know on the voter list a ballot. Anyway you vote. Yes or no keep. The governor dumped governor and if dumped governor gets fifty percent of wins. Then you look at a ballot. There forty six people on the ballot this time and they're joke candidates semi serious candidates and the few actual piles on there. And you pick one and only awebber leads that thing. There's no runoff. It's one big battle with everybody from every party on it so you get twenty five percent of the vote. Your governor as long as the first election goes your way with a majority. So that's that's what's happening. Peter what What what what. It's interesting and murphy. Just said twenty five percent but in reality you get forty. Six candidates on the ballot. If there's a recall all you gotta do get more votes than anybody else. You can have a tiny percentage of the votes cast for somebody who becomes the governor of the largest state in the country. Yeah i mean the. I went back and looked at the margins from the two thousand and three recall and Gravis lost mike by almost a million votes on the. Yes no question. And then arnold pretty much consolidated you know the vote. He won with forty five percent among the other options on the ballot. This time yeah. There's so many candidates. The republican party you know has is pretty divided here. I mean there's one democrat first of all. Let me say this. The newsom campaign in the state democratic party made a bet early on. It's probably smart to say. We don't want any other democrats on the ballot right. The only option here the only campaign. We're going to run against the yes no question. One on the recall antonio vieira goza you know chronic thirsty politician thought about running again here in california to get on the ballot. Tom steyer has more money to spend apparently and he thought about getting on the ballot they. They're not running as an option to replace There is one democrat in there. Youtuber guy named kevin path but these are all. Mostly republican libertarian or just wacko..

"Who would be a good story. I'm not going to deny that particularly considering what happened this off season. But it's really about him piggybacking off of a team. He felt doubted him. Winning the league. Mvp but coming up short of a super bowl appearance and then following that up with a super bowl championship. It really comes down to that. The reason why is not nearly as interesting as compelling as you try to articulate is because the packers are not a follow meaning. They're not an opponent that you get to knock off in route to your ascension. You see what i'm saying. The packers themselves that's the organization he plays for so even if he proves people wrong and goes out there and plays lights out windsor super bowl championship. Max a gouda. Kansas and hurt by that mark. Murphy isn't hurt by that. The packers organization isn't hurt by that. The fans aren't hurt by that because they all get a super bowl championship because of it and because this is not basketball is the sport of football. You yourself has not have acknowledged that good akins good accounts okay has done a pretty damn good job back to back trips to the nfc championship. Game matt floors. Well okay the roth that. He's accumulated some of the decisions. What the twelve players that azaruddin's throughout the during his epic press conference about how nine of those pretty damn good decisions by gouda cuts no matter. What amer rogers says so. There's no way that aaron rodgers wins the super bowl and guna cuts and murphy and those boys don't end up receiving some sean from it because they'd be super bowl champions to his story. Here's the ultimate story and put me up on screen..

"You know forfeit. Listen i was at toronto. You went katie. Went down finally finals but who was walking out with him. It was bob myers who went to the hospital. It was. Bob myers who was crying at a press conference. It was bob myers. He clearly cares about the do had a lot of love and respect for k. d. Who doesn't if you know you go respect the hell out of a first of all. And he's not any hard to love either. He's a good dude because he speaks his mind. Doesn't mean a great dude. But in the end we under what he's talking about is the incident itself and from an organizational perspective. How it was a turn off for him as to how to handle it. He never said that. He didn't address them eventually. He just told you. I i know molly we got a lot to get. He did he did. he did speak of that. He talked about the injury as well. And how much that changing. But to your point about being interesting we saw another side of him. That's completely fascinating in more depth than there's so much more to discuss and other angles. We need to get into so again. We'll be hitting that all throughout the show the fellas reacting to all of it another subject. I want to get into now. Though guys. after an off season in which aaron lamented his involvement with packers brass resulting in a restructured contract. that makes it much easier for the former. Mvp to take his talents elsewhere in twenty twenty two. The beautiful mystery that aaron rodgers is making this very clear. Oh and the other go also addressing his future. Here's rogers and brady. I don't wanna farewell tour..

"You The the where said to some degree When kevin durant brought up how in the stuff he was watching the last. Dance and scottie. Pippen refused into the game. You play getting on him with all due respect. Where the hell was steph curry. The baby faced assassin. The greatest shooter on the god has ever created the clear absolute superstar play for this team. The face of the franchise. Where was he at all of this. I found it very very conspicuous. Kevin durant and draymond green. Never mentioned his name not one time because a lot of times we see things and we have seen things that have transpired with the golden state. Warriors and other stars for other franchises would have been called upon to handle something. We've never done that with steph curry. No one ever says what about steph curry. you know what. Maybe it's because he's thirty three and he looked sixteen. That's how young he looks. Okay and obviously he's got that kind of wonderful affable you know personality it's impossible to dislike him and all of that stuff he's loved universally and whatever but i can also tell you that anybody that comes to the golden state warriors knows that he's the golden child and so for me. There's a lot of meat on his bones. You said there's a lot more than i have to say. I'll pass it to max and then we'll go back and forth. I guess throughout the show but what was very very conspicuous to me. Is that particularly when you're talking about. How a situation was handled two point to the coach and appointed to g. m. all right and i applaud k. d. and dry monotone. It was a great interview. I thought both were very believable. A relatively candidate you know..

"Maybe you don't win a championship them with them in this year. But in the years to come you're guaranteed to have fats whereas how many other teams are guaranteed to have some combination of two players on that level. So i certainly wouldn't do it for hard. Like the celtics are not in the position. Where james harden is such upgrade over jalen brown that you make the deal in risk potentially blowing the next ten years of your franchise out who else is out there on the market that i would that is considered a trade chip in a situation like that so i think you know jaylen brown to me is become too big to trade at this point jason. Tatum already was jalen brown. After being you know the guy you trade for kawai the guy you trade. Anthony davis at this point. Jaylen brown too big to deal. Well i mean look if not that it would be but if we're doing the hypotheticals if it were jalen brown for anthony davis tomorrow when you compare. Anthony davis jason tatum. You'd probably do it but the l. That's that's not a realistic discussion One other wrinkled to this one Coincidental to this to this podcast agenda. Because i didn't know When i had this conversation a couple of days ago that we would be discussing jaylen brown today but Back and forth with with a friend who's a fan and we were just talking about simmons and beat this and the as sixer fan you know. I wonder if you had to do over again in that draft because it went simmons ingram brown. Would simmons still be number one. I thought well we hold on an so. The your your initial reaction is always think like that's crazy. of course. Ben simmons unicorn six ten point guard at all this but i started thinking about it. You know obviously ingraham's becoming all star and jaylen brown's on his way there and when you think about two skill sets and just the offensive repertoire. That the other two guys have. The benjamin does not have at this stage and so out of curiosity i through this at at a scout who you know as seen plenty of all these guys and he like i was expecting the get the hell out of here with that question response and it was not it was you know. I think i'd take jaylen brown. The dow was literally the response. Was i throughout this..

"Get two of your face for just six bucks. Participation may single item regular price. All right let's finish howard with jalen brown. And i don't know if you put them in the most improved category but he certainly has made some real big strides in the early part of the season. Averaged twenty points per game last season as we record this right around twenty seven. His field goal percentage jumped almost ten points in forty eight percent to right around or just a cut below. Fifty eight percent is three. Point percentage around forty three percent shooting thirty eight last year. I mean this is still viewed as jason tatum team. He's the guy at the top of the food chain. But jaylen brown's closing the gap on him right now and i bring this up in the context of trade situation. So i mean we're talking top of the show about james harden. How would you look in boston. Celtics are always the epicenter of trade rumors that have been over the recent years but as jalen brown almost become too big trade and we can use hard as an example like it sounds kind of goofy but would you trade jalen brown for james harden at this point with the way brown is playing and kind of the where this has been building towards over the last couple of years. Yeah i mean look. He's twenty four. He's not even really to his like early prime wherever you know whether they say primis twenty-seven so you're like you're like pre prime on a good contract to a good contract. He's twenty four. He's i mean. I think throughout the numbers already. He's averaging twenty seven four point five four point six rebounds three assists a game shooting at a great percentage. He's a a versatile and and aggressive defender. He's a great to him. He's one of the best two way players in the league right now and look. I look at the league. Forget the like the hypothetical jalen for hardening although it's a fun discussion if you of the who says no game i look at where the league is. Chris and i think if you look at the last several champions or just the last ten years or so. This league is so much controlled by versatile. Long athletic wing types. The kevin durant and kawhi leonard. Lebron james's and excuse me. Jason tatum and jaylen brown falls into that. Maybe is not the same exact level of some of those. And i don't want it. I'm not even saying jaylen and jayson nor belong with the durant lebron tier but those kind of players determine a lot about postseason success. And if you've got a guy who is in that you know six seven six eight six nine range whose long who can handle who can shoot. Who can defend multiple positions who you can run offense through. I just think that's where the league is right. Now in the celtics have different levels of it but they have two of them. They have two of them. I as a broad outline..

"Getting in that way but to your point like they're a functional franchise like they're doing the right things they're having success or at least a degree of success this season and it's not based off some absurd off season move that made them slightly better in the short term. Julius randle is on. I believe that expiring contract from the year the one he signed before. I don't think he's gonna play like this all season long especially not shooting numbers but i think he can be a solid score. Rebound what he's ben for for most of his career and you are building from the ground up. You're establishing a good base quickly. Looks like he's going to be part of your rotation where that rotation remains to be seen we haven't seen anything really moby top and yet but he was widely regarded by a lot of people going into the draft. As being one of the you know the better picks in and around that range. Mitchell robinson like you want to talk about things that can then have staying power mitchell. Robinson has defensive stopper does like mitchell. Robinson is a really really good defensive player. I think he's going to be a terrific shot. Blocker weakside defender in this league for many years to come. You put all that together. It's like all right. Maybe finish the season. I don't know what the equivalent of like forty wins is shortened season. Thirty thirty five wins. And then you're onto something you can drive somebody else in the lottery next year and yak. You can point to free agents say look. We're not the bad news bears anymore. We're not the gang that can't shoot straight. We're run by a front office. That is showing. It knows what it's doing. We have a head coach. Who while he sure as hell is gonna burn. You ought to be baron granville. The most there the top five minutes. I think in the league. No the top. Two minutes in the entirely to italy wanted to. That's vintage tips. Just run these guys into the ground like you may be. Yes if you go there you know you give yourself a chance to win. Some of the quotes. I've seen from some of the players. They randall said this recently. Where it was paraphrasing. A little bit here. It's you know we trust the game plan. We know that we're going to go out there and beyond kind of a level playing field. That's kinda stuff. You heard in chicago. A lot from jimmy butler and others about coaching and working with tom tiptoes so even they don't make the playoffs. They finished ninth or tenth and the conference. But do it looking functional. That's a huge win for the knicks. That is cause for celebration. If you're new york because it has been quite literally decades since. They've.

It may not just be the timber wolves pick and maybe the warriors bad as as they've shown time so we'll see where this goes it may be too top five top eight top ten whatever in a strong draft and if weisman blossoms into a star still a little early for that the a good indication so far but yeah they may have that rare ability to pull off the smoothest transition from championship era dynasty era to the next era without having to bottom out in a major way or bottom out for too long like they they kinda did bottom out in terms of record this past year but weird circumstances with klay out and all that stuff but they might be able to thread that needle. It's really tough to do. And but you want curry therefore it if if at all possible the one thing i'll say just in supportive of your your framing which is like. Let him hit free agency. he'll be thirty four at that time right. And so how many teams even if the if the fear we're we're going to lose them for agency. How many teams are going to go. Max out of thirty four year old Especially a smaller guard who. They don't generally age as well probably. There's probably not a lot of risk there unless you know say it's charlotte. Who just wants to bring him home and like you know have plant a flag. You'll put up. Put a nice little know flagging their kappa. Whatever i don't think there's a lot of danger there. I guess the other danger though is more of are you. Are you doing a disservice as it insulting in some way to steph curry to say you know what we're waiting waiting for free agency. We we just have to see where we are in hand and how you look like. Is that the wrong way to treat a guy who's much the franchises at the wrong signal to send to other stars and their agents and their families because that is. There's a political reality to chris. You do have to factor in perceptions and just wanting to show that we're the kind of franchise that always takes care of its own. I get that. Although i would argue that writing checks the total forty five million dollars in that last season is thanks enough. I mean i mean you. And i know it's never that simple. It isn't right. It isn't worth watching. Good piece by michael pena check it out over at sl dot com It's up right now on the site. You decided it was time to upgrade your outdoor deck. So you got all the essentials to do it. You.

"It's more about this chris. When he lands in philadelphia to play joel embiid or he lands in brooklyn to play with durant or when land miami to play with jimmy butler and bam out a bio wherever he ends up is he insists on still being a thirty five to thirty eight percent usage guy is still gonna want to dominate the ball and the offense the extent that he always has because if he gets somewhere else chris especially gets to one of his preferred destinations. It's going to mean pairing up with at least one. If not two other all stars and those guys are going wanna just sit around watching hardened beat the ball into the ground so the question i have is. What's he willing to do at this stage at thirty one having gotten all the individual accolades possible but not the ultimate prize. And i apologize to the celtics. Two thousand seven eight. Talk to ray allen for the story and it's about that sacrifice that ray allen paul pierce and chemical that made that enable the celtics to be better than the sum of their parts wanting to three hall of famers but if they don't play in concert with each other and each take a step back and serious steps back that they took then then you can't get there and james harden if he does land with multiple other stars somewhere that that's going to be the first question. How do you make it work. Yeah i think the counter i would make to. That is twofold one. It was a lifetime ago. I get that. But every time i talk to people in oklahoma city. I'm reminded of just how comfortable hardened was playing off of durant and westbrook again. It was a long time ago. And james harden was a complimentary player back. Then he's an mvp can't last now. What three four time nba scoring champion. So things have changed significantly but in that role. It's misleading for people to rewrite history. Not saying you do it but like some people rewrite history and say harden one out of oklahoma city because he wanted a bigger role he did got out of oklahoma city because they made the catastrophic of not maxing him out and thinking that you know salary cap ramifications were more important than signing james harden. If they had signed there may be the same things would have happened. Maybe would have wanted to be an alpha somewhere else but we don't know that to be true the other side of it is to that like everything you say is right. But i can't fathom by. James harden saying i want to go to brooklyn and i'm going to be the same.

"Everyone at seven twenty three as you know, Michael the champions of the NBA are. The Golden State Warriors Golden State Warriors just going to say that lend. Well, they wanted to continue my tongue couple years in a row. Well, when they won a couple of years ago. Some you know normally teams when championships they go. Visit the White House Clemson football team went and got hamburgers at the White House right after winning their national championship in college football. Well, when they. When they won in twenty seventeen the Golden State Warriors led by Steph curry said, they would not visit the White House with Donald Trump if invited and then Donald Trump tweeted at the invitation was withdrawn after you can't come because you're not invited. So when they won this past year. There was no discussion at all about going to the White House. So the Golden State Warriors in Washington yesterday, their only appearance of the year. They're so instead they went met with Barack Obama for about an hour. Right. Kevin durant? Their star one of their star said it was amazing. So there you go. Wow. Exciting. Let me ask you though. Yeah. You covered sports all these years. I did do you think it's inappropriate for a team not to want to go to the White House when they win because they don't like the occupant. Should they just honored the presidency? The White House the invitation and not politicize it. Yes. Really? Absolutely. You think they should have gone -solutely? I think you will you you honor the the Y they'll go to the White House visiting the White House the I'd love to go to the White House right now. I think if you're so honored you go, and you leave the politics out of it. Yes. That's how I think I've always I've always been very strong strong advocate of separating sports from politics. Right. So a sensible point from Len Berman, Jose excellent. All right, online food, porn, what the hell is that? Well, so there's this company called devour, and it's got frozen foods, and they came out with an ad that they want to err on the Super Bowl. But they describe this ad is food porn. It features a frazzled food porn addict and his four Lauren wife, but apparently gets a little too little too dicey. And they won't air it. They have a thirty second version of the commercial that they're going to air during the Super Bowl and the minute unedited version, which they're saying is not safer Super Bowl is going to be online. So obviously are we gonna play the minute version. Right. This is a real gimmick. This is this is a real gimmick for them to get. Climbing this is not safe for the Super Bowl. So it's we go look at the video. It's on our website, seven ten W, R dot com slash Lennon. Michael you play a little bit for. Yes. I take requests here. My boyfriend is addicted to frozen.

"Are at this week's conversation is with NBA head coach Steve Kerr, and he's a coach of the Golden State Warriors. And if you're familiar with possible, you know, that they had been on an absolute tear for the last handful of years. It's been an amazing building of team chemistry and performance that Steve has been part of at the helm of. And it's just flat out ridiculous. What they've done. And so this conversation is working on pack and decode how how has he done that who has he become and who is he working on becoming and what is the path that led him to both of those places in more. Specifically he this is his fifth year as head coach with the team. And during that time he's helped the team towards three NBA championships for straight NBA final appearances the NBA single season win record seventy three wins in NBA coach of the year award in twenty fifteen twenty sixteen in four of the five. Winningest seasons in franchise history loaded so Steve who won five NBA championships during a fifteen year playing career now has eight championships. Either the player in a coach and is the first to win three NBA titles as a player and three as a coach so outcome. Yes. He's got. But this conversation is not about the outcome. It's about the process. It's about the way he thinks in organizes his life in for those of you unfamiliar with the Seattle Seahawks, which is an NFL team the head coach at that organization is p Carol he's also a partner in a business that we fired up together compete to create and his whole philosophy inside of that organization is to always compete compete to become the best version of yourself compete to be a best dad, the best son, the best friend the best coach the best player, whatever the role is at hand. And Steve has made a point to. To revolve, the warriors culture around joy and in this conversation. We discuss how Steve went on about building the warriors culture, and what he is most hungry for his biggest challenges at the moment. And then finding a way to keep the warriors driven and hungry and playing with joy after they've already experienced so much previous success and so winning after winning success after success is a whole different type of challenge. And Steve has a brilliant mind, A Beautiful Mind, and the way he expresses that genius inside a basketball is rare in its unique. And I think you're gonna love his insights, not just for basketball though, but life as a whole and with that, let's jump right into this conversation with coach Steve Kerr. Steve, how are you? I'm good. How are you Mike? Thanks for taking the time. I've been looking forward to having this conversation with you for a while. Pleasure. So the first time we met it was number years ago up at the Seahawks. And it was really exciting to see how you were getting your head around your philosophy in what it is that you wanted to do as a as a beginning. Coach has a beginning phase of your life of coaching. And I just say, wow, congratulations. What you've done and how you've done it like remarkable. Well, thank you, dad. Never could've Agean that our team would have this kind of success. I knew was taking a really good job. We had a lot of talent. But to think that it would all come together like this. I never never could see that coming. But it was it really was a great time for me that that summer. Trying to figure out you know, how I wanted to coach and. My visit to Seattle seeing using Pete watching the Seahawks practice for a few days. Just seeing their culture senior environment was a huge influence on me. And and it continues to be so, you know, Pete Pete remains a good friend, and we talk quite a bit. And I love the way he goes about his business. And that was a big experience for me in terms of helping me become the coach I am. Now, you know, one of the things that struck me about that brief intense time that we had was how. Great of student. You are. And now I'm saying that in you've won. I think today eight championships, and you won a handful five of them as a player, and then like to watch you learn I was like okay here we go..
