We're gonna do million dollar picks. And then old friend Seth Meyers talking about a whole bunch of stuff. So really good podcast. It's all next. First, our friends from Pro Jam. What's up? All right, I'm taping this on Thursday afternoon. Normally when there's a big MBA trade, I always do the emergency trade reaction right after the podcast. But we just put up a podcast on Tuesday. So I decided to play it a little differently this time. I wanted a little distance, I wanted to listen to stuff, read stuff, and try to form some big picture opinions coming out of this. So I have four smaller ones, then one big one. First one, I thought Portland did an incredible job with this trade. I really liked this trade, especially everyone was trying to bully them in June and July about, oh, you got to take Miami's offer. You just got to. It's where he wants to go. It's the only offer you're going to get. And guess what? They waited. They played it perfectly. They stared Miami down, and they got a much better deal. First of all, they get the Drew Holiday piece that they can flip into a bunch out of their stuff, which we'll talk about in one second. I love the DeAndre Ayton gamble. As you know, on this podcast, I am a big DeAndre Ayton guy. Not in the sense of I'm the biggest fan of his in the world, but I'm a fan of the asset. I just think I love the valued assets, no matter what it is. Whatever market we're talking about, DeAndre Ayton, 18 and 10 for his career, 60 % field goals percentage, 25 years old. He's played in 45 playoff games. He played four rounds in the 2021 finals. Last year, he got his ass kicked by Jokic. Oh, sorry. Like, that never happens. And Phoenix just sold on him, which I can't wait to talk about. But just from a Portland standpoint, they not only get Ayton in whatever they get for holiday, they get the 29 first, they get the two swaps, and they dump Nurkic. Nurkic hasn't had a healthy start to finish all the way through the playoffs here since 2018, which I'm positive was a long time ago. He's basically 12 and 8. He's, you know, a 50 % shooter. I made a list of the top 30 centers. I encourage you to do this at home, because what's more fun than making lists of NBA centers? I can't imagine anything. I made a list of who I thought were the best assets of the center position for talent, contract, everything. He was 29th on my list. The only person I had ahead of him who's technically a starter, unless you start talking about the Detroit or Charlotte guys, was Zubats on the Clippers. I thought he was the 29th best center asset in the league. And Phoenix, you know, just quickly to go to them, they're trying to win this year. They got worse. They turned Ayton's money into Nurkic and Grayson Allen and Nasir Little. Grayson Allen, we already know with him, he can't play in playoff series. We saw him 22. We saw it last year. I heard and read in some places like that, I got two rotation players. Did they? Is Nurkic a playoff rotation player? Is Grayson Allen a playoff rotation player? Because I'm positive he's not. So for the same money that they were spending on Ayton, they got three guys that I don't think are going to help them. In 25, the money comes down a little bit to 23 million just for Nurkic and Little, which is 7 million less than Ayton. And then in 26, that money goes up to 25 .5. But I don't understand what Phoenix was doing. Why not wait to see if Ayton clicks with Vogel? Vogel has such a good history with centers. He rejuvenated Dwight Howard on the 2020 Lakers. He basically created Roy Hibbert's career in 2013 with the defense verticality thing. I thought he was going to do a good job with Ayton. I'm stunned that they gave up on him. I'm almost waiting for one of those, now they tell us stories when, you know, that's where Brian Curtis calls them, where like a week after something happens, there's this kind of notebook dump where it's like, here's seven terrible DeAndre Ayton stories. So maybe that'll happen. But for Phoenix just to be like, cool, we locked this down, man. We got Nurkic. You're trying to win the title. You have KD and Booker and Beal. And like, what are you guys doing? Anyway, from Portland's standpoint, I love the Ayton thing. I love that they didn't get bullied. And I know they're going to turn Drew Holliday into something. So this to me was at least an A minus for them, for where they were two months ago, where Dave's like, I want to go to Miami. That's it. And if you don't trade me there, that's kind of fucked up. And they made this work as it got reported that, uh, I think in the athletic, that he expanded his list to Brooklyn and to Milwaukee in the last two weeks. And that's what Portland was waiting on. You know, they were banking on the fact that he's a competitive dude. He's one of the best 75 pairs ever. He wanted a situation settled. So, you know, you wait, you wait, you wait, they expand the list and then you go. Uh, there's a Drew Holliday piece to this. That's awesome. He becomes a contender prize. I wouldn't call this a Drew Holliday sweepstakes. I reserved sweepstakes for the superstars, but it's a mini sweepstakes. This is somebody that could have a huge impact on the playoff race. You know, not only the usual suspects, everybody's talking about Boston, ironically, Miami is a really good fit for him. And in some ways, um, I'm a little more scared of them with Miami than Dame in some ways, especially at a much cheaper contract with giving up less and keeping some of their assets. Philly, if they could pull it off, they have to be in there in Golden State, Minnesota. I think I have to mention Sacramento, I think is a team that if they could figure out how to get Drew without giving up their core, which is basically Keegan Murray and Sabonis and Fox, like that's, you know, could Davion Mitchell be in that trade with some, with a salary and some picks, who knows. The team that I love for Drew Holliday is OKC. I have OKC, you know, I started doing my MBA research for the over -under spot and I haven't landed on a number for them yet, but to me, they feel like a high forties team with Chet and with the growth of their young guys. And if you just like, let's say they traded Lou Dort and a bunch of their picks, maybe two firsts and two of their lesser picks or three firsts and a second, whatever it is. And they just say, fuck it. And they get Drew and you put him with Giddy and SGA and Jalen fucking awesome Williams and Chet Holmgren and all these other dudes they have, that might be a top three team in the West. I mean, that, that's starting to give me some early 2010s OKC vibes. So where he goes is going to be important. I just feel like there was so much Drew Holliday slander the last couple of days. You know, he's one of my favorite players. Even Haralabob, who was the chairman of the board of the Drew Holliday fan club for years and would have the benefit dinners there and, you know, just did a lot of yeoman's work on that front. And even he was like, yeah, yeah, Dame's better than Drew. That trade makes sense for Milwaukee. I was hurt, Haralabob. I was 100 % hurt by that. But you know, Drew got his ass kicked by Jimmy Butler in the playoffs last year. I get it. It happens. Jimmy was unbelievable. I feel like he would have kicked anybody's ass. By the way, why is Drew Holliday guarding Jimmy Butler? That speaks more to some of the issues with Milwaukee. He was never supposed to be a point guard and a creator. I think he was always better as an off -the -ball guy. We saw that with Rondo and New Orleans and just in general. I want to see him with a point guard. I want to see him just being unleashed, not having the ball a lot, just worrying about hitting threes, being an occasional, you know, make -shit -happen guy and being like the third or fourth best guy on a team without having the offensive responsibility to have. All their half court issues got blamed on him for the last couple of years. And I get it. They weren't like an awesome half -court team, even the other one in the finals, but I really value that dude. I had him, even I did the trade value list in August and I had him 37th and I had Dame 23rd. I think he's one of the best 30 players in the league still. He's 33 years old, which, you know, I'm going to talk in a second about when guards hit their mid -30s, but just in general, I think he's a real asset. If he goes to a team like the Celtics and they can keep Derek White and Tatum and Brown in the center, it's like, look out, man. So little mini sweepstakes, rarely do we get the trade, but then we still get another asset to talk about. Thank you for everyone involved in the trade. And then the fourth small point is just that, you know, not rocket science, Milwaukee bought some Giannis time here. They have one of the best 20 players of all time. They were staring down the barrel of a situation that was not good. I was talking about it on this podcast in late June and early July. I thought he was going to put them on the clock. I thought Mark Lasry selling his stake was a really bad sign for all of this because that dude is smart. As I laid out in June, that guy is really smart. And if he's feeling like, you know what, it's time for me to sell my buck stock, that makes me nervous. And then all the stuff that Giannis said and did, which I thought he did really fairly and really smartly. And I think that dude's about titles and that's it. And I know we say that about players, but I think in his case, I don't think he cares about, you know, what's my legacy, how do I compare against Dirk DeWhisky, any of that stuff. I just think he wants more rings. I mean, think about the guys who have won two rings out of the best 35 guys on my list of my pyramid. Those are all guys in my top 35 that won multiple wings. You go to the one -ring side, Jerry West, Oscar, Moses, Dirk, Jokic, Giannis, Pettit, Garnett, Kawhi, Rick Barry. That's the list he's on now. I certainly don't think he's looking at that list going, I got to get away from these guys, but it's a slightly different list. I think when you win multiple rings in multiple situations, it elevates you in a certain way. I think he fundamentally understands that at least a little bit. I want to be the best player since LeBron James. I think that's a thing that he wants. How am I going to do that? I need more rings. I need more finals trips. He knew from last year and maybe even the Boston series that they just weren't good enough. Whether this trade is going to be the thing that propels them, we'll find out, but he's been in the league 10 years, two MVPs, five first teams, two second teams, and now we have this little two -year window. Kawhi and the Raptors was a one -year window. This is a two -year window, I feel like. With Giannis, he's got two years left in his deals. So does Lopez. Middleton has two in a player option. Dame's got two, and then this crazy $120 million player option extension thingy that he has that just keeps going and going. It's probably two years. There's a world where this could go terribly this season, at least for what the expectations are, and then maybe it becomes Kawhi, Raptors. Maybe Giannis is like, you know what? That didn't work. Trade me. And the Bucks, who have no picks left and no future, they look at it next summer, and they go, all right. We tried it. Giannis, what can we get for you? Dame, what can we get? And they just do a reboot, rehaul. Remember, they won in 2021, which just takes so much pressure out of this. It's so much different than the Clippers situation, where they went all in on Kawhi and Paul George. They give up all those picks and SGA, and they've gotten nothing out of it. They haven't even made the finals. So it's got to happen. I think they at least probably have to make the finals. If they get bounced in round two, do I think Giannis is going to stay because they made this Dame -Mower trade? Probably not. So that leads to the big question, is how good of a trade was this? So there's a big picture angle on Dame, and it's going to sound negative, but I really don't want it to sound negative because I think Dame, I voted for him for NBA Top 75. I think he's been one of the best guards in the last 15 years. I think there's a ton of great things you can say, and there's a chance that he goes to Milwaukee, and this thing is fucking awesome. I know any Celtic fan I've talked to, including Isaiah, who's helping produce this podcast today, the Giannis -Dame pick and roll is just terrifying. Other than Jokic and Murray, it's going to be the single most unstoppable offensive play in the league. It is. We are conceding that point. The spot Dame is in right now, big picture -wise, it's weird. He's a superstar, but he's not, and we've seen guys like this before. I judge superstars by, do you have the resume statistically, and is your team succeeding consistently at a certain level? You can't totally say that about Dame. He's never been on a 55 -win team. He's missed the playoffs completely four times in 11 years. He said three first -round exits. He made the Final Four once in 2019, which was really lucky because Golden State and Houston were the two best teams, and then they got smoked. He's never been on a true contender ever. Instinctively, you go, well, that's not his fault. Who's he played with? Well, he played with LaMarcus Aldridge and CJ McCollum and a couple other guys, but not really anybody. The reason I'm putting this up is there's a success element that he has not had yet that for somebody with his resume is actually kind of unusual. I went and I looked up how many guards in the history of the league averaged 22 points a game for their career and played at least 700 games. I thought the list would be like 20. I didn't know. I didn't know what I was walking into. Only I think 75 guys have averaged 22 a game. So I went and I looked up the list, and it was 10 guys, 700 games, 22 a game for their career. There were some guys who came close like David Thompson, who I think is one of the best guards I've seen in the last 45 years, but had a short career and had some drug issues. He didn't make it. He didn't play enough games. Pete Maravich, 24 .2 points a game, but he didn't play enough games. Kyrie hasn't played enough games yet. Bradley Beale is five games away. I'm actually kind of glad the cutoff's at 700 so we don't have to talk about him. And then Mitchell and Trey Young aren't there yet. There's only 10 guys that made it, and the 10 guys are all fucking awesome. And again, I mentioned this in the context of Dame, who we think he is versus the success he's had. So the 10 guys, Michael Jordan, 30 .1, Jerry West, 27 .1, Allen Averson, 26 .7, George Gervin, 26 .2, Oscar Robertson, 25 .7, Kobe, 25 .0, Harden, 24 .7, Curry, 24 .6, Wade, 22, barely made it, and Russ, 22 .4, and then Dame is at 25 again. All right, what does he not have that those other guys have? Well, MJ, don't need to talk about him. Don't need to talk about Jerry West, who's the freaking logo. Allen Averson, pretty good comparison, right? Big stats, really memorable player, but not a ton of success. Here's the difference. Averson made the finals once. He won an MVP. Dame has done neither of those things. George Gervin was the best scoring guard of the 70s. He made two final fours. He had some bad luck. He really, in 79, really should have came close. And some of it's on him, right? He could have come through. Bobby Dandridge is the one that ended up coming through for the Bullets. They lose. But two final fours, he had four top five MVP finishes, five first teams, four second teams. He was just unassailably the best guard in the league until MJ. Oscar Robertson, don't need to go through him, but he won a ring and an MVP. Kobe, five rings and an MVP. Eleven first teams for Kobe, by the way. James Harden, three final fours, an MVP, six top five MVP finishes, six first team MBAs. And even though Harden has never made the finals as the best guy, he made it with OKC as the sixth man, you could build a contender around Harden. We saw it. We haven't really seen it with Dame. I think that's a fair thing to bring up. Curry, four rings, two MVPs, you know, the Curry thing. Dwayne Wade, three rings, two top five MVPs, two first teams, three second teams. He's more in the Dame waters a little bit, but he had the 2006 finals and he was the second best guy with LeBron on those heat teams. And then Westbrook, who you would say, well, Dame had a better career than Westbrook. Did he? Westbrook made the finals in 2012. He was second best guy on that team. Almost made the finals in 2016. He won an MVP. He had two first teams and five second teams. It's at least like a real argument. And I think when you look at Dame, he only had that one 2019 round three, got bounced. He's only had one top five MVP finish. He's only had one first team MBA and four second team MBAs. Really, really good top 75 career. But the piece that's missing is, have you been on a really good team? Have you made a real run at it? Which is why, you know, I think this Milwaukee trade is so much fun. This is his real chance. I get nervous about a couple things with this trade. One is that, you know, if you look at the 33 and older guards who average 22 points a game in a season. Jordan did it twice. Curry did it twice. Still going. Kobe did it three times. Jerry West twice. Sam Jones once. Hal Greer once. That's the entire list. Now the NBA is different. We have more three -pointers now. It's easier to score. Scoring is the easiest it's ever been. Guys can play at a longer age. So I'm not ruling out Dane being good for the next three years. But just pointing out, history is saying, be a little nervous. In general with guards, like Chris Paul, we saw from age 35 to 36 to 37, like it just dropped. But that's two years older than Dane. Maybe it's fine. I just worry about guards. We have not a lot of instances with guards in their mid -30s of them either peaking as players or being able to sustain whatever success they had during their prime. It always starts to go down with really no exceptions, except for Steph Curry. He's the only non -exception. So if your case is Dane's as good as Steph Curry, or Dane can be as potent as Steph Curry on a winning team, like, you know, Steph Curry is better than Dane, but I'm not going to argue that he couldn't do a lot of the stuff that Curry did in Golden State. The bigger issue for me, the age I'm definitely worried about. Dane has not been healthy the last couple of years, and we have not seen him play nine straight months at playoff basketball with a big bullseye on his back. Everybody coming after you, you're the best team. We haven't seen him do that ever, much less than the last couple of seasons. So can he stay up? Can he stay healthy? That's one thing. The defense with Dane just got kind of swept under the rug the last couple days, and I don't really understand it because there's five categories of defensive player I feel like. There's excellent, there's good, there's average, there's not so good, and then there's bad. And I think Dane's a bad defender. I think the stats back it up. Like, his defensive rating last year was 245 out of the guards. He's the 245th guard for defensive rating. You know, 117 .4 individual defensive rating is 483 overall. Portland's team's always defensively, it was the Achilles heel for them. Partly because of Dane, because he couldn't guard anybody. He's too small. And, you know, think about what we saw from the playoffs the last couple years. I think about the 2020 bubble Celtics playoffs, not infrequently, because I think that team had a chance to potentially win a title. What happened? Everyone hunted Kemba Walker. It was hunting season. It's like, where is he? Got to get a switch. Got to get Kemba Walker guarding somebody who's bigger, or got to beat him off the dribble, and it just became a hunt session with him. And basically, he got played out of the league. He's not in the league anymore. You know, we had this with Isaiah Thomas, too, in the mid -2010s. I think it's been an issue with Kyrie Irving. The Celtics certainly went at him in the playoff series with Brooklyn a couple years ago. Curry, you saw, who I think is a better defender than people give him credit for, but the And he's a much better defender than Dame is. Jordan Poole is somebody that got hunted in playoff series recently. Chris Paul, obviously, is a big one. Jalen Brunson, remember what the Heat did to him? Mitchell, when he was on Utah, this was a huge issue. And then Trae Young, obviously. My fear with Dame is he's a DH, and I think in Portland, part of the reasons he was able to put up the stats he did was because he wasn't playing defense, right? It was just, how many points can I score? My team isn't very good, and I'm just going to do my thing. He's an incredible offensive player. But how much of a trade -off is the defense, right? Well, you think, all right, well, Milwaukee, they're really good defensively. They'll be able to protect him. Here's the team. Giannis, Dame, Lopez, Portis, Middleton, Conaton, Beauchamp, Crowder. Who's guarding Trae Young on this team? Who's guarding Jason Tatum? Here's a partial list of guys that I don't think this team will be able to guard this season. Devin Booker, Tatum, Butler, Trae Young, Kyrie, Curry. Who's going to be chasing Curry around the screens? Dame lowered? Good luck. SGA, Luca, Mitchell, Murray, Edwards, Brunson, Ja, Garland, Fox, Halburn. Are they going to be able to cover Derek White? I don't know. The way this team is constructed, they are not going to have the ability to guard other guards at all, which means they're just going to have to be in a shooting match with them, right? It's going to be not much different than what's going to happen with Phoenix, where they're just literally going to have to outscore the other team. I've just watched too much playoff basketball over the last couple years, where it's like, if you have that weak link on defense, and you're playing a team that's smart enough, they're going to go after that weak link. Like, think about them against the Lakers, right? The Lakers figure their crunch time. Let's say they make the finals. It's Milwaukee and the Lakers, and Lakers crunch time. They're going to have LeBron and Davis and Austin Reeves and, I don't know, a shooter and a point guard, whatever. All they're going to be doing is trying to find where Dame is on the court and going after him. What about when they play Boston? Boston puts out White and Brogdon and Tatum and Brown and a center, and all they're going to be doing is trying to make sure Dame is covering somebody who has the ball who's now torturing him. I think it's a real problem for them. And what's funny is they gave up Drew's defense and, you know, they, what they gave up on defense, which is significant, and they gained an offense, it might end up just being a wash and they might just be a different version of the same team where they still have a huge flaw. It's just on the other end of the court. I'm just shocked that nobody brought up the defense. I agree he's an amazing offensive player and what's cool about this trade and what I'm excited about as a basketball fan is, can he go up a level? Right? A lot of these stats he put up, especially the last couple years. They didn't mean anything. They were, he was on bad teams. Like, who cares? Ultimately, Bradley Beal scored 30 points a game on the Wizards. Who cares? I think most really good offensive players, if they're on a bad team, can get between 25 and 30 a night. Can you do it nine months in a row? Can you do it when you're getting hunted on defense all over the place? How much can Milwaukee protect him? And what does he have in the tank at age 33 with 900 plus games on the O 'Dominor already? I'm still afraid of the Bucks, but people have, like, FanDuel had them as best odds in basketball and I think most people feel like they're the favorite now. I don't feel like there's a favorite. I think you can go through every team. Boston, I could, I'm scared of Porzingis. What's going to happen with Jalen Brown out there? He has contracts. Can Peyton Pritchard, all these different things. Philly, God only knows. Miami, they're unquestionably worse. Yeah, Milwaukee is going to be really good, but depending where Holiday lands and how this all plays out, I just think it's still wide open. And the other piece, so if you're just talking Boston, Miami, Tatum kills Milwaukee. I have no idea why. Boston is kind of built to at least stay with Dame and, you know, Derek White is about as good of a person you're going to have to try to keep Dame in check, at least. And Boston's done a really good job of guarding Giannis over the years. They don't have Grant Williams this year, but I just don't think, I think there's as many ways this goes wrong as it goes right, I guess would be my final thought on this because for what they gave up, especially with that 29 unprotected and the two swaps and, you know, they are all in on this team. And you know my theory, when you go all in on a team, you better think you can win. Not positive, but it's an awesome trade. It really is. It makes the league so much more fun. Dame and Giannis together. I'm going to enjoy watching Portland. I still have my eating stock. Watching Phoenix fans slowly realize that Derkiszna isn't the answer is going to be fun and then we'll see where Drew Holliday goes. So really fun trade. We're going to talk about it a little bit more with Die Hard Bucks fan, Ben Thompson in one second. Let's take a break.

Spellcaster: The Fall of Sam Bankman-Fried
Fresh update on "golden state" discussed on Spellcaster: The Fall of Sam Bankman-Fried
"Things just moved at a different pace. Sam was going ahead with huge celebrity and sports partnerships, part of his apparent mission to make FTX a household name. Brett could barely keep up with all the deals being done. There was the Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen commercial. There was Steph Curry the of NBA's Golden State Warriors. There was also one featuring Larry David as a skeptic. Not just about crypto, but, I don't think so. These ads were putting FTX on the map, turning crypto from something on the fringes to something mainstream. It should have been exciting, but Brett was concerned. The marketing deals were to promote the part company of the Brett managed, but he'd had nothing to do with them. It was all coming from Sam. Worse still, as Brett saw it, he was there to help FTX grow up, to do the kinds of things a responsible grown -up company does, like have compliance systems. But Sam seemed curiously resistant to that. He was still running the company as a startup, the way he always had. Tiny staff, crazy hours, beanbag naps. I found it to be impossible to be able get to work done when I had the responsibility to help make this company great, but not the authority to do so, because every single decision ultimately ended up with Sam, and we needed Sam's approval on everything. Brett was at a loss. So in April of 2022, he put it all down in writing in a long memo. I told Sam, if we're not going to be able to talk once a week or something like that, then I can't really do my job. The memo got Sam's attention, but not the way Brett hoped. A few days later, Sam got

Koepka leads Masters, NBA scramble

On Friday, he crowded a 5 under 67 leaving him at -12. Then really do too much wrong. Maybe the speed kind of got me on a few pots, striking the ball really well, leaving it in good spots. And it's what you got to do. You got to make birdies in these par 5s, take advantage of them and did a good job of that playing in 500. In second place is John romm, who got through ten holes before inclement weather on Friday, suspended play. Oh my God, my man, Paul Pierce had to go to the bathroom and I think he had already gone to the bathroom. Yes. Do you have anything for first would you like to address real quick? The broken AC. I mean, it changed the course of it changed the course of NBA history. I mean, if the heat win that championship, LeBron doesn't go back to Cleveland. And yeah, it's an entirely different instead they knew they couldn't beat the heat straight up. And they had to break the AC. That was a close fourth quarter. People forget the heat at a very good chance to win that game. One in the fourth quarter. How did they know that none of their own players would cramp up though, is my question? Oh, 'cause there's not a guy on the other because they know they've been prepping them all night. Like, hey guys, eat this banana. Here's some extra fluid. Here's all this. I have some more Gatorade. You know it's coming in the fourth. Gonna be a hot one. Meanwhile, you have a guy who famously cramped up in the finals because he's playing at such a higher level than everyone else. Flying around the floor, breaking player tracking models, shout out to prime LeBron. That was game one, right? And they lost in four. Yeah, except they won game two. It changed the entire series, Mike. It changed the entire series. In the nothing to do with Dwyane Wade's deteriorating health and everything to do with LeBron crappy game one. I don't know that I have any conspiracy theories. I do think the Celtics are just way overly dramatic and just like I guess when all your franchise titles happen when the NBA was on tape delaying and black and white, you got any to like add some history on it or whatever to kind of get the crowd going there. I will say this is not this doesn't now everyone knows what I'm talking about. You don't have them would have packed up Bill Russell. The fact that you go public with that take as frequently as you do as a professional person is amazing. And I have so much respect for Bill Russell too, particularly. You can hear that in person because you can hear it on TV. I've never been to. Yes, no, yes, it's a Kerr plunk every time a shot hits the rim in that arena. It's way over the top. In both the Memphis and Dallas series, I remember a ton of possessions where the defense was in good position, but the balls just exploded off the rim for a Golden State offensive rebound. Does Golden State intentionally just have the tightest rims in the league? They probably already take deeper threes on average, which would result in more long rebounds. But if you told me tight rims for long rebounds as part of their home court strategy, I wouldn't be surprised. Actually, I'd go so far as to say that would make sense when you watch. "What are your thoughts? Just said I know there's a deep bubbling hatred of Jordan Poole forming inside of this. I love and respect to Jordan Poole. Yeah. In all seriousness, I mean, I'm not like super convinced. I was skeptical of his ability to impact this series positively for the world. Agreed. Yeah, he got going after the run it happened. I'm with you. I think as the series unfolds, I think GP two is going to end up playing more than him. I said this as a joke in the group chat and then samus fundi Ari tweeted it the other night. Shout out to max druce. Who could hold its own defensive lead a way that Jordan Poole could not every team could use this through. Who is robbed of one of the greatest shots in NBA history. But anyway, we can get to this email. I'm just looking at pools, pools, numbers, in terms of when he was on the floor and how Kerr closed with GP two at the end of the first half. And that's just like not. They're going to give they should give his minutes to GP two. One lineup they played that was interesting was it was Thompson in place supporter. So I think they then went from the lineup I mentioned to curry Payton Thompson Wiggins and draymond. If clay's having a good night, that's an interesting lineup for them. He wasn't last night, but I love how the end of the second half or the end of the first half is always like the little the little appetizer for what the fourth quarter is going to look like. The little preview and yeah, I'm with you. That's when the Celtics go small with exactly the starters, always. Yeah, and so that's usually when teams are playing their quote unquote, closing lineup. To be given foul trouble, whatever, but yeah, I'm with you that I think GP two is clearly I think a destined for a bigger role than pool in this series. And the other guy real quick, I want to mention as Andrew Wiggins. Who did a really good job, I thought, on the offensive glass, that's where, you know, when he's left alone, he needs to crash the offensive glass as much as possible. And I think he entered, I know he entered the finals tied with loony for the most total offensive rebounds in the entire postseason. I'm not sure where that stands right now, but he did a really good job..

"And I just think it's indicative of I don't think he's very good. He can be very good offensively in this matchup. I don't think that look two for 12. I don't think he's going to shoot two for 12 in every game. In this game, he took three shots. And I know that that's not he has 7 assists. I understand all that. But I just don't think that when the Celtics are switching everything when he's going to the split action, they open the third quarter with a set hammer play where he spins baseline off of the post touch and just like throws the bot a bands because the Celtics sniffed it out. There's just so much stuff that he can do against a lot of other teams. And I know he had one keeper lay up for sure. In the third quarter. But they take away so much of how he's successful offensively against so many other teams because of their switching and their versatility. And so yeah, like I think the Celtics are right to be like, we aren't really that focused on dream on green right now, because I do think defensively and to me it was less about, I think they were just trying to downplay how much is antics were annoying them. But I do think he was getting, he was probably most successful site getting under their skin a bit. I'm with you that I do think that, you know, a lot of the draymond offensive genius is countered by the Celtics defensive genius. I do think him being a little bit more aggressive, a willingness to put the ball on the floor. Like that white play, I agree. It's like not necessarily great play, but yeah, he was aggressive. It worked. He put the onus on the refs and he got a foul call, that is that value. That he doesn't do enough of that. And again, you don't want him to hijack the offense. There's a fine line, but I do think that there is something to be said about when he is, at the same time, like him also not letting the defense just sag off and him literally doing nothing about it. I think is even worse. So yeah, I mean, the desperation was there and I do think him having those loans of aggression, being willing to at least take it to the rim, be a part of that movement and not just to facilitate her. I think that is also needed. That's not to say he needs to try to turn into a score. Like you said, he only took three shots. But I liked that aspect from him offensively because they can, I think it's better than him being stag. Oh, yeah, he's got to be himself, and that is, that's who he is, for sure. I just don't know if that's going to be enough as this series unfolds. But we will see. Are there any other players that you want to I have an email that I want to read in a minute? But are there any other players that we have and hit that we talked about just kind of stands out? We just talked about GB two a tiny bit, maybe a mention. "Yeah, this is a theme that I want to hit. I don't know if we'll hit it now, but oh sure, I'll just ask you this question that I've been thinking about. After watching the game, the Celtics have had a lot of success. And NBA teams in general have a lot of success running off of missed shots and running off of steels. The Celtics were very active in transition. They wanted a push, they did not want to play in the half court. And my question is, is that the right way to be against this warriors team when you have a size advantage on the wing? Yeah. Yeah, you are able to get when you're patient, you can get almost any shot that you want against this team in the half court. The Celtics can do that. When they have the right players on the floor. Which is another thing that we'll talk about. Extensively. Just generally, do you think that's the right move to run and be so fast and speed the game up? Because in the third quarter, when they tried to do that, obviously, you're just kind of playing with fire with this team. Right. Well, part of the problem and to your point is I think over the years a big trap teams fall into with Golden State is like when Steph is a couple of threes, it rushes you. You feel like you need to start getting it back and you need to start doing the same things and I think the warriors have been really successful. Over the last 8 years, forcing teams to play faster than they want to feel like they need to increase their pace to kind of get caught up in this up and down game that golden states almost always better than you at. It's a fine line Mike because I hear you. I'm with you like I think in the half court GB two I think did a good job on Tatum, but Tatum can shoot over him. He hit that one catch and shoot three where Payton would think was helping on Jalen and Tatum. The shot to three from the top of the key, like there was no defender on him. I still think you need to get out in half court a little bit, but it needs to be more focused or still get out and transition a little bit, but it needs to be more focused. It needs to be more controlled than what it was in game two..

The series is now tied one to one heading back to Boston for game three on Wednesday night. I just want to flow through. You said the vibes earlier before we started recording. I just want to flow through this game with you. We'll keep it very loose. Where do you want to even begin this conversation? You were in attendance at game two. What is your bird's eye view take away of everything that you witnessed? What is on your mind, top of mind when you think about what occurred in that game? Kind of actually how I don't think the battle ground of this series has been set yet. I think game one was very weird and I think game two was not weird so I have the right word. I think both the games were very distinct. There's no feel to this series yet. For example, in the Miami boss in series, we kind of knew that that series was coming down to Boston's turnovers and my music ability to score in the half court. In this series, I think we've had two very different games, and I don't think the rotations are fully set yet. It's just, to me, a series that I don't know that I don't know what to carry over is gonna be basically. I didn't think a lot of what, you know, obviously there were adjustments, but you know, I don't think we've gotten to that point yet where we know what each team's best is and how the other teams necessarily going to take it away. In terms of what happened on the floor yesterday, I mean, you made Joker talked a lot about the turnovers after the game rightfully so. He was clearly very upset. I mean, that's Boston. Before the franchise traded monte back in the early doesn't tens said there's no way wherever trading manteo us like two months later he was off the roster right so if things look good through the first two months and they make a couple of just doesn't have to be some superstar trade. I don't think. I don't think they have to trade a star player player. It's like you know. Can you get like malcolm brogden level back. Not malcolm obviously because he can't get traded this year extension but just somebody around that level like is there a pathway to getting one of those guys around the trade using wiggins to go get somebody like that um and you know picks or whatever but if the roster says somewhat the same I would expect them to get out of the first round and honestly a huge success to me is okay as men taking meaningful leaps. Is he actually if he can be playable for fifteen to twenty minutes a night like truly playable on both ends be enough of a deterrent. Deterrent at the rim. He's not gonna be immediately at a great rim-protector a deterrent Does he is he chatterly in the right areas is he playable. Offensively can just be a good role man and actually catch passes and make an occasional short roll. Read it and then obviously the big one is quite what is quite because i think that's what determines a lot of things that determines honestly what this summer that's gonna look like If if clay is any Facsimile of what he used to be you know if he's eighty percent of the guy who used to be. I think that changes the entire conversation Then i think they will get aggressive And that's getting out of a first round getting to a second round and maybe this eating shakes outright. You somehow reach a conference finals because You know at the end of the day if steph andrey all healthy they are a very tough out in the playoffs no matter who else is on the roster. It really doesn't matter they'd be i mean they when they beat. The detroit was in the western conference finals a couple of years ago. You look at the risks that roster. It's disgusting. I mean it's like six or seven guys playing rotation minutes who aren't in the nba anymore. It's a really really bad rosser so of those. Can you like the sixth man on the team. Practically he's here. Twenty minutes and nine during bell's playing a lot of minutes when coke was playing a lot of minutes. Andrew bogut was playing a lot of minutes. And that's the washers andrew. Okay that's not two thousand fifteen hundred But i wasn't even held the it was just a really bad roster But if those three are healthy you really can't put a limb what they can do to. Because of the the level chemistry they add at.

"He didn't even summer league this summer. He really isn't available to go full speed and jump yet a lot of this stuff that they've been working with them on is just If you're watching some of the cuts that are coming out of their practices just individuals stuff. You can't even go full-contact yet. So they're not expecting him to be back until november at the earliest and he's going to be playing catch up once again so i i just don't think it is fair for the franchise to put what they're putting on him at this point especially because they're not really grabbing anymore pigment. That's they added pneumonia. Be a this summer. I think is a nice fine especially on that contract. He's going to help them in some meaningful ways but they don't really have another big athletic center. It's wiseman comes back. And i don't know if you can feel that on a night tonight. Basis against the level of competition. They're expecting to plates. Yeah it's always interesting. I feel very similar to how you do i think. Especially the way that the franchise kind of through one of the bus last year like that was disappointed. Me because like you mentioned like you go back and you watch. He was like yeah dude. This shouldn't be surprising that he came in and believe it or not. He can't move side and you. You can't really expect them to make decisions on the short roll because he's never had to do that before he just doesn't really have that. That court vision awareness right now. I think i would at last year. Lot as Even though it wasn't like the worst year ever obviously here before i worked at largely as an organizational failure. In kind of an indictment of steve kerr not in a. I guess it goes a little bit more. Bob myers coat end in the front office because they should have known. This is how things will play out if we bring these guys on. But i felt very similarly kelly. You ray in some ways like it's difficult sidebar. Collier rid because i think a lot of times people are like all the highlight dunks. You know like what will like casual twitter can kind of blow up with that. But then i also think that some more Analytically driven people can be a little bit harsher towards kelly. he has utility. he's a capable wing player. Who can do things defensively. Even it's not perfect like he's a man he's a four man offensively just. The warriors tried to make him a to last. That was just never going to work. He needs to would actually fit better in some ways on this current roster 'cause they could just use him as a point of attack defender and then they could use him as a small ball. Foreign liners were basically. You're rim runner for all intents and purposes you plan as a four next to tin ammonia leads a five that actually kind of works offensively..

"Team previews we are just about wrapped up because the season starts tomorrow technically today when you're listening to this so we're kicking off. I mean tipping finishing off. Do my analogies are always terrible. But they're they're really rough today we're finishing up with talking about the golden state warriors and. I think we have two more previous after this. But i'm really stoked joined by someone in this has been in the making a while. I'm terrible at who my schedule sometimes. Because i've been all over the place last couple of weeks Trying to iron things out before the season started. But i'm really really psyched. Joined by tommy gun from on Over at at golden state. Warriors twitter I normally don't just have people from mba twitter on but you have really good thorough thoughtful opinions so Yeah man. I'm psyched to tacos are on your end. Good mark thanks for having me on first of all. I haven't got the germany podcast lately. I've spent an offseason basically not doing them after doing a ton during the last season so excited to spill all my thoughts at once a year instead of two hundred eighty character format like do on twitter. So yeah. i'm excited do so that there. Oh thanks for having me on and Let's jump inna stuff. There's going to be fun. Man i it obviously. It's it's different. It's difficult to look at the warriors lens in some ways because of obviously then the lakers The nets those are really the big three teams right now and how they talked about media so obviously things get ratcheted up two degrees. that are absurd at times I think we've seen a lot of golden state getting pushed as a title contender right off. Rip had into this year. But you know speaking on some of that before the okay. So i'll let you in on this one of my issues as a bit like i don't mean this is a bit but i just like i don't know i'm generally more interested talking about the eighth and ninth man that i am talking about steph curry. Sometimes we talk about james. Wiseman i i wanna talk about james. Wiseman i because are you trying to get me in trouble already. This is this is one of the things. I look at in terms of when when we talk about the warriors like when we talk about them last year when when when when we hear people talking about the now like yes staffed ray everyone would always stood out to me about the warriors when i was in high school in college in those teams were really started..

"Touch base on abortion politics. Which i've come just raging to the forefront because texas and the supreme court and done a little two step. That has think roy dictated what we're going to be talking about over the next six months american politics well and i find it interesting. You know we. We've talked about just over the last forty or seven minutes how do you get a blue electorate Pretty energized and. I don't think it was any accident that one of the first public office holders politicians to go out and talk about what texas did And what the supreme court helped texas do in in not issuing an injunction around the new state law. He was out talking about the the politics of abortion and what could happen throughout the country and in california even though with a with a legislative supermajority. That's not likely to happen at a state level in california but it gives you a sense murphy. And and peter you know this is an issue that will greatly animate the democratic base and it may well be needed in a big way. Democrats are going into a an off year mid term and These don't usually workout as well for the party. In power and i think august was a pretty terrible month for for biden. The approval ratings have have dipped numbers with independence dipped and the real remedy is not different than california. How do you get that democratic base energized and this might be Just a huge huge political gift while the deb's always have the same problem which is their presidential year voters. Don't show up in the midterms mostly younger often of collar. And so republicans always have more muscle in a midterm elections. That said i would bet dollars to donuts that mitch mcconnell was just shopping etc when this This thing blew up with abortion because in the house races there are plenty of prolife. District's you can argue. Oh would we even help republican turnout but in a few of those suburban districts where they're going to be battles it's anthrax in the senate races. It's double anthrax. we wanna win. The pennsylvania the phillies suburbs on an abortion war. No way the democrats will also have a couple of hundred million dollars now which is something that senate campaign folks keep a sharp eye and then finally this thing and bind started to do it to his credit. This texas thing is vulnerable from the right. Kizer is not intellectually honest. Conservative is going to say yeah. Turn your neighbor in hackneyed law which is engineered basically skirt constitutional enforceability. is not the conservative way. It's not the american way it's a mob rule thing and so i think this is particularly good news for the democrats trying to take senate control because those those key places are where. This could be really bad now. The the footnote is the supremes. Did not endorse the thing. They just refused to intervene. What i thought was ridiculously on constitutional law but there is going to be an appeals process. I think the odds this thing gets nuked on the way to the supreme court hearing fairly high but in the political world who cares big scary abortion law. Big scary hint to pro-choice voters from the supreme court. That's all you need to set the east ablaze. So to speak just in time for the senate races to us bo burnham as a political strategist look at a white woman's instagram after this texas long supreme court ruling every white woman's instagram and my instagram feed. Every story was about this And it reminded me of sort of women's march era twenty seventeen people were posting about how republicans were trying to control bodies You know college educated. Suburban women were the lynch pin of the two thousand. Eighteen midterm vote for democrats for biden. They they used to vote republican actually back in bed before back before trump the And if those folks are motivated in the suburbs heading into the midterms again. It's just gives biden something to both like run on and run against and actually as robert like you know you're in the obama white house in the first couple years of his administration when and his approval ratings. Were going down like how like. How should the biden white house approach this like they have something to to point at and say like republic like in other words. There's not necessarily donald trump out there to run against. He's fading a little bit. But you do have governors and all of these states enacting a lot of very conservative legislation. It's unpopular like how like. How do you message that from the white house. It's a good question. I mean i think you know. The biden team. Smartly reportedly got out early. And said you know we're going to even the president saying there's a whole of government effort To turn back this texas law now the reality of it is. There isn't a lot that can be done Legislatively based on sort of where we are I think smartly pelosi and schumer have said they're gonna put essentially roe v wade on the floor of the senate and vote And i think it's smart to get people wild up. I think it's smart to get people on the record. As you said murphy. Some close senate races the top six most tightly contested presidential states in twenty twenty all have senate races in two thousand twenty two so getting getting those folks on the record is imperative again. I don't think legislatively there's a lot they can do but again. I think this will probably go into a broader narrative as the white house gets closer to twenty twenty two. which is. Let's throw all of these. You mentioned peter. All of these kind of draconian ideas then aren't really conservative. They're not really republican. They're just downright scary. Let's throw them all into a pot. And swirl that around and that becomes the kind message. You've got governors out there who they don't understand science they're you know they're they're not helping with the commonsense measures that would fix this pandemic they wanna take your rights away. They wanna do a whole lot of scary things and Meanwhile democrats are out trying to make the economy better for middle class. Americans and i think that's the that's the this isn't going to be a short term thing. I think this will be a long term thing that lasts well into november. That's definitely where they wanna go. Totally the issue is going to be. And i think this is underrated by the national media. Which doesn't try to have a partisan bias pretends to have a big twenty county college educated. Secular you know left of center bias culturally is the democrats can be scary to in the house. We found that in twenty twenty when they couldn't get traction off the biden win. And if the squad excetera we go into this three trillion dollars spending spree the dempsey and whenever you proposed new spending you win. Boats not necessarily true And and that's going to start. We'll be talking about it a lot. Next week This week as three point five. Trillion starts shrank. Progressives get mad the squad can be very scary about seizing the means of production so i think it could be a fear off. Republican cultural stuff versus democratic economic stuff. And we will be here watching it now. Because we're out of time except for the mailbag we'd.

"To go through a little of the registration numbers that both mike and peter talked about you know in august of two thousand three yet. Six point six million democrats You had five point. Three million republicans so forty four percent to thirty five percent with the rest sort of not stating a preference. So you had a much closer state than you do now. Democrats have only gotten a few percent bigger. But as mike pointed out. That's ten point. Three million democrats where republicans have literally kept their same number. They're five point three million repeal. We've gone up by ten thousand people in the anti trump and overall lost about nine percent of the state. Electorates is both of you. Talked about the newsom campaign is is is focused on your. This is as. I said it in a newsletter. We'll have a little a little later as well. This is not a rocket science. Reggie right. you don't need a shit on a micro targeting and a lot of fancy polling you just look at these registration numbers and say okay to peter's point like i gotta get out the inter. What would would exist of the energized democratic base. And then i've gotta figure out who isn't in that of that ten point three million democrats and i gotta make sure they understand. This is right in front of them and they don't even need a huge turnout. Just need a mediocre one because they're so big You know even a mid sized elephant can trample you to death to totally mix destroy metaphors but donkey aren't big enough for that to work. Now let me give you the kind of if you believe. The politics is often ironic chaos. God laughs at us. Here's a scenario. I think could happen. This recall could be the best thing to happen to newsom ever because he was stuck in mediocre land making mistakes. There's others a big scandal on unemployment benefits being ripped off billions and billions of dollars. It was a mess so now he's gonna win this thing i believe and he will be able to say. I slew the big red trump monster. Now the reporters sacked will say yes but only by seven points you know should have been thirty and yet nobody cares. He won he. He's going to beat back the ours. Then you've got folks like your barbara who were all pissed off. If he is smart he will do a re clock now and older wiser. Here's what i've learned. And because everything in america that happens first happens in california. I'm going to lead the way to post copa america. Put the middle class. I he's gonna shut the woke craziness that rules the party. He got him into some of this trouble and then he will get reelected. Because there's nobody big enough and democratic politics to take him out in the primary unless it's total keystone cops And so he'll win for free now. Validated and meanwhile joe biden stays in the vortex of hell here politically where he's facing a mid term. That will gavin wins easily. Because it's a rigged election. It's not going to have real opponents. biden's gonna have a bad mid term because of other things even biden doesn't control but he's made a little worse at least lately. Were see how next year goes Game is going to be in new hampshire in twenty twenty three as the fresh new face. Democrats are looking for If it becomes apparent by does not going to run again. That's where he wants to be and if these smart and goes centre-left and uses this he he can have a total re clock in a relaunch instead of sitting around his office rendering how his old rival kamla harris lapped him. So this can still be crazier near robert. I mean your pal bend. The ball told me that article. I wrote that he suggested. At least the california democratic party would be healthier with a stronger republican opposition because they today are more beholden to the quote unquote woke left. Mike talks about right. And i think new some has pivoted a little bit on the at least the crime and homelessness issues that have affected california wad of his photo ops or him you know cleaning up trash under underpasses and like like dealing with some of the basic like civic society stuff that you know. I think a lot of voters expect from their government and a lot of progressives on city councils in the state have you know taken quote unquote compassionate approaches to crime and policing homelessness. That are actually run. Afoul of where. A lot of moderate voter sentiment is i think The other note on. Mike's point which is interesting There's been three gubernatorial recalls in history. this is the third Remember scott walker in wisconsin back in twenty th. Well he was. He fought back a recall in wisconsin. And that you know. He won by a big margin in polar much more polarized state but that did help him become a celebrated republican conservative warrior. And he's helped us that those donor connections that fox news exposure in pivoted that to running for president did not work out for him. Obviously but it really helped him raises national profile. I guarantee you. There are more people in the country. Right now Mostly just because they listen to acts on tap who now. no gavin. Newsom is compared to six months ago. And and you know in a polarized electorate of polarized country like Most people aren't gonna pay attention to the nitty gritty of how many points he won by. Or why would the recall is about. He can't say. I slayed the republican trump beast. And you know if you're a you know a manhattan donor. That might be an appealing kind of thing for you. Or if you're new hampshire voter That's a that's an interesting thought. He makes a good first impression. You know he's he's a new act once you get out of california so we're safe but they could be really good for him if he does a big re clock off the win superior. You agree to that. This is This the newsom team is his righted. The ship they're They're not likely to lose this recall. Despite the fact that. I think i got six. E mail solicitations from people purporting to raise money on behalf of governor newsom yesterday in my In my inbox you would have thought this race was you would have thought they were five points down that probably ten points up again like two weeks ago through ago gap i i would have thought that um now i mean they could win by five ten. You know it's just broil numbers it. Yeah it just depends on much. The waking blue giant shows up elders. Not helping himself either. Not that like he's was. He made a comment for example over the weekend. Where he said. Diane feinstein might die next year. And i would be governor. And i would get to appoint her replacement like that's something that new some would have liked to say himself but kind couldn't and elder to set it and he's just like spooked the shit out of democrats in the state. You know elder is intellectually pretty honest. Which means he's doomed because he's a doctrinaire conservative and he got tangled himself up on slave..

"Maybe you don't win a championship them with them in this year. But in the years to come you're guaranteed to have fats whereas how many other teams are guaranteed to have some combination of two players on that level. So i certainly wouldn't do it for hard. Like the celtics are not in the position. Where james harden is such upgrade over jalen brown that you make the deal in risk potentially blowing the next ten years of your franchise out who else is out there on the market that i would that is considered a trade chip in a situation like that so i think you know jaylen brown to me is become too big to trade at this point jason. Tatum already was jalen brown. After being you know the guy you trade for kawai the guy you trade. Anthony davis at this point. Jaylen brown too big to deal. Well i mean look if not that it would be but if we're doing the hypotheticals if it were jalen brown for anthony davis tomorrow when you compare. Anthony davis jason tatum. You'd probably do it but the l. That's that's not a realistic discussion One other wrinkled to this one Coincidental to this to this podcast agenda. Because i didn't know When i had this conversation a couple of days ago that we would be discussing jaylen brown today but Back and forth with with a friend who's a fan and we were just talking about simmons and beat this and the as sixer fan you know. I wonder if you had to do over again in that draft because it went simmons ingram brown. Would simmons still be number one. I thought well we hold on an so. The your your initial reaction is always think like that's crazy. of course. Ben simmons unicorn six ten point guard at all this but i started thinking about it. You know obviously ingraham's becoming all star and jaylen brown's on his way there and when you think about two skill sets and just the offensive repertoire. That the other two guys have. The benjamin does not have at this stage and so out of curiosity i through this at at a scout who you know as seen plenty of all these guys and he like i was expecting the get the hell out of here with that question response and it was not it was you know. I think i'd take jaylen brown. The dow was literally the response. Was i throughout this..

"But you do need to do it in a way. That doesn't hamstring you. One quick note. It may not just be the timber wolves pick and maybe the warriors bad as as they've shown time so we'll see where this goes it may be too top five top eight top ten whatever in a strong draft and if weisman blossoms into a star still a little early for that the a good indication so far but yeah they may have that rare ability to pull off the smoothest transition from championship era dynasty era to the next era without having to bottom out in a major way or bottom out for too long like they they kinda did bottom out in terms of record this past year but weird circumstances with klay out and all that stuff but they might be able to thread that needle. It's really tough to do. And but you want curry therefore it if if at all possible the one thing i'll say just in supportive of your your framing which is like. Let him hit free agency. he'll be thirty four at that time right. And so how many teams even if the if the fear we're we're going to lose them for agency. How many teams are going to go. Max out of thirty four year old Especially a smaller guard who. They don't generally age as well probably. There's probably not a lot of risk there unless you know say it's charlotte. Who just wants to bring him home and like you know have plant a flag. You'll put up. Put a nice little know flagging their kappa. Whatever i don't think there's a lot of danger there. I guess the other danger though is more of are you. Are you doing a disservice as it insulting in some way to steph curry to say you know what we're waiting waiting for free agency. We we just have to see where we are in hand and how you look like. Is that the wrong way to treat a guy who's much the franchises at the wrong signal to send to other stars and their agents and their families because that is. There's a political reality to chris. You do have to factor in perceptions and just wanting to show that we're the kind of franchise that always takes care of its own. I get that. Although i would argue that writing checks the total forty five million dollars in that last season is thanks enough. I mean i mean you. And i know it's never that simple. It isn't right. It isn't worth watching. Good piece by michael pena check it out over at sl dot com It's up right now on the site. You decided it was time to upgrade your outdoor deck. "Tax or funding their own new arena They've never hesitated to spend to admit to create a winner and they believed of course that the center of their new arena would be just a cash machine itself. Now there's a pandemic where they don't even have the benefit of that so at some point. There may be a real reckoning here on the financial side. Like can we afford to spend at this level if we're not contending anymore because that's what this is really about like. How long do you do you. Keep the franchise superstar in this this area legend when it's no longer about winning championships and it may come at a at a cost competitively end and financially. So look i don't think there's some imminent inflection point here where they have to make this call but they did not extend him before the season. They'll have to discuss this again after the season and decide whether they want to. And you know where this all leads as pena's very skillfully maps out as if you decide you're not gonna extend him do you. Do you have to consider whether or not you might want to trade him before he hits free agency a couple of years down the road. I can't remember exactly what it was. But those are real. Discussions with that after next season is after next season so in two thousand twenty two those are real discussions teams have to have. I don't know what do you think like i to me. I kind of a and this. Is this sentimental side of me. Not just being very guy. But just in general i tend to have a to too big of a sentimental streak when it comes to sports. I like guy staying put i liked. I know i like a team holding onto a legend. Like i don't i i. I'm allergic to the idea of the words of importing with steph curry given all he has met there i think golden state is in a strangely strong position. When it comes to steph curry because look they have. James wiseman and james wiseman can play. We can debate what his ceiling is but he is a starting level center in the nba. The thing is going to be averaging double doubles as his career moves forward. I mean how much better than that is. The depends on how he evolves offensively you know. Does he wind up shooting for mid range three pointers all that good stuff. They also have minnesota's lightly protected first round pick next year so they're kind of like in the early stages of rebuilding process without having to go through it. They're like back channeling rebuild with wiseman and with this future number one pick in next year's draft which and look this is just what smarter than i say they say. Next year's draft looks like it's loaded. This is a good draft going into next year..

"There was some talk of a three year extension about one hundred fifty hundred sixty million dollars to tack onto this deal. Steph has not expressed any kind of desire to play anywhere else. He's very comfortable in that situation. As well taken care of great building. Great coach in franchise and everything that is involved with them. But interesting i mean steph is thirty two years old. He's going to be thirty three years old before the end of the season that means the end of next season. He's going to be thirty four years old so you start to wonder i mean just. How much do you want to commit to steph curry. If you're the golden state warriors do you look at him and say look. He's won us a couple of championships. He made us one of the franchises of the decade in from two thousand ten to two thousand twenty or and he's entitled to whatever he wants to max level contracts with us. We'll keep monsters. Thirty eight thirty nine years old or d at some point get pragmatic if you're the golden state warriors and say got this guy's a history of injuries the ankle stuff hasn't flared up for a number of years but that's still always kind of lurking out there in the back of our minds. What do you think howard. I mean is there. I mean look. We're neither one of us. Think steph cars on the trading block. And i certainly think if i'm spinning forward the warriors gonna wanna see what klay thompson looks like when he comes back and plays with steph curry. But it's interesting to think about. Just what kind of commitment you make to a smallish card who is going to be thirty three thirty four years old when you eventually signed him to a new contract now so a couple of things come to mind one is does. Because i'm i'm still getting feel for sl and policies and pina just got here like. Can we expense disguises. Like groucho marx. Because like i don't know if you can go to the bay area now once travels approved again having floated the idea of trading steph curry like. That's i that's that's that's pretty. It's either that or can we enroll like is there a witness protection program. We can enroll in. He might need that. I'm just concerned for michael. We can discuss. Yeah well well. Well i'll get back to you on that one where we have a really good piece and look. It's provocative on his face. It is floating. The idea of is steph curry worth like a massive contract into his late thirties. Which is a crazy thing to think about on on multiple levels right. he's beloved. He's he's beloved. For good reason he is one of the greatest not just gonna grace warriors ever He's a maybe the grace warrior ever. He's the he's he's he's one of the top beary athletes of all time like steph. Curry could there is no mayor of the bay area right. That's obviously three major cities there. He can run for mayor of any of those oakland. San jose san francisco or anywhere in between and he'd win by like ninety nine percent so the very thought of like is he worth x. amount in his later years where might be a real burden on the warriors payroll is he worth a luxury tax payments In the meantime not just him but this whole this whole payroll because as p notes. You've got dream on his steel. When you've got witnesses deal you've got closed deal and eventually an extension for wiseman so these are real issues. Chris an esa this not fanciful or you know. Somehow just provocative for the sake of being provocative these are real issues the warriors ownership.

"It's more about this chris. When he lands in philadelphia to play joel embiid or he lands in brooklyn to play with durant or when land miami to play with jimmy butler and bam out a bio wherever he ends up is he insists on still being a thirty five to thirty eight percent usage guy is still gonna want to dominate the ball and the offense the extent that he always has because if he gets somewhere else chris especially gets to one of his preferred destinations. It's going to mean pairing up with at least one. If not two other all stars and those guys are going wanna just sit around watching hardened beat the ball into the ground so the question i have is. What's he willing to do at this stage at thirty one having gotten all the individual accolades possible but not the ultimate prize. And i apologize to the celtics. Two thousand seven eight. Talk to ray allen for the story and it's about that sacrifice that ray allen paul pierce and chemical that made that enable the celtics to be better than the sum of their parts wanting to three hall of famers but if they don't play in concert with each other and each take a step back and serious steps back that they took then then you can't get there and james harden if he does land with multiple other stars somewhere that that's going to be the first question. How do you make it work. Yeah i think the counter i would make to. That is twofold one. It was a lifetime ago. I get that. But every time i talk to people in oklahoma city. I'm reminded of just how comfortable hardened was playing off of durant and westbrook again. It was a long time ago. And james harden was a complimentary player back. Then he's an mvp can't last now. What three four time nba scoring champion. So things have changed significantly but in that role. It's misleading for people to rewrite history. Not saying you do it but like some people rewrite history and say harden one out of oklahoma city because he wanted a bigger role he did got out of oklahoma city because they made the catastrophic of not maxing him out and thinking that you know salary cap ramifications were more important than signing james harden. If they had signed there may be the same things would have happened. Maybe would have wanted to be an alpha somewhere else but we don't know that to be true the other side of it is to that like everything you say is right. But i can't fathom by. James harden saying i want to go to brooklyn and i'm going to be the same.

"This relationships can subscribe for the best weekly nba content. These two are capable of. What does that mean could be. The best duo. I'll see how you can beat here. They are chris mannix and howard back medics back back. What up mr beck mannix our sir. So howard i know you wrote eloquently about your father in the new york times Just a couple of weeks back my question for you though looking back on your relationship with your dad. Did he ever tweet at your employer to fire you the reference. Of course marvin bagley. Who was the father of the coach bag. The father of marvin bagley player with the sacramento. Kings tweeting out that these sacrimento kings should trade marvin bagley. So did your dad ever do anything like that. No i'm not sure firing trading or this or quite the same. But i guess that's the only analogy we have No i will say this though. My dad was a twitter lurker and was not a prolific. Tweeter i think he just followed me and maybe you know some news organizations whatever and every so often he would hit me with something usually a tweet me so like i like i'd make some reference to something like a music like a song and he would like like make fun of me or whatever they mocked me on there so but the but nobody would have known that was even him so he did not cross the kind of boundaries that marvin bagley his father. Marvin bagley junior not to be confused with marvin bagley heard. I never put in that position. And i do not envy marvin bagley of the kings for what his father the position. He put him in there anymore. Kings story than that i mean. Could that happened to anyone. But sacramento i mean not only. Does marvin bagley tweet. Trade my son then you have. Darren fox his father saying trade him. Dad's getting involved on social media. Meanwhile luke walton sitting there would be like. Oh god this is starting already like. We can't give it like six weeks for us to collapse in the. I mean you think the the obvious solution is that bill walton needs to weigh in. Oh god i mean if we're gonna give fathers of flares sniping about the team at about each other possibly might as well have the coaches father who look bill. I would listen on any topic anyway..
