Where Did Body Mass Index Originate?
"Today. We're looking at whether it really is that bad for your health to be fat and a quick note about our words in this episode. A lot of people don't like the words overweight or obese. Some people prefer the term fat as a neutral way to describe a person's body like tall but not everyone is comfortable with using fat this way and meanwhile overweight and obese have specific definitions medicine. So we're going to end up using all these terms but we'll try to be careful about when and why we use them okay so in order to talk about this at all we've got to with the bmi the body mass index every stat. You've never heard about how many americans are overweight comes from this measure. Hundreds of thousands of studies rely on it. It's a staple of modern medicine. So where on earth did it come from to find out. We're going to go back to the nineteen fifties do the university of minnesota's football stadium. The golden gophers are battling it out in the big ten conference. Our story starts down in the depths of the stadium entered through gate twenty seven. Just as if you had a ticket gate twenty so and then there's a maze of of hallways and offices along under the sloping of the The bleachers above this is henry blackburn. He's taking us to the lab where the bmi was born. He's a professor emeritus and minnesota so When when we worked there on a saturday could hear a distant rumble. When the minnesota eighteen got a touchdown run out and run up the causeway and see if we could see the extra point kick sometimes invaded by berman. Because of all those who left the stands and the carter but it was our place. Were very much at home. There and one thing they were doing and as weird lab was trying to answer this big question. How much fat do we have in our bodies. This was important because scientists figured it was the first step and understanding whether fat is bad for us

"Minnesota Golden Gopher coach. Mr Glenn Mason. How are you? You know, I'm great. And I can't remember when I've had a better introduction that that and, uh if you I'm going to tell you something, If you're getting excited about talking to me, you have to reset your goals in life. Uh, what you have to understand? I went to school at the U of M in the nineties, and you couldn't give those football tickets away until you became the coach, Mr Mason. Until you became the coach. Things changed you, my friend were a game changer. Yeah, I was. I was a game changer, You know, Thank you very much, but that's you know, if any young guys out there want to be a college football coach, go to a place like I did. It hadn't been to a ballgame and since the year of the flood and go to seven games and in 10 years, seven ball games in 10 years, and they fire yet, I mean, that's what you have to look forward. In college athletics. Trust me, I flooded the administration, the US administration with plenty of emails. I sent packages of no, but trust me, I sent plenty of emails of Um, my disdain for what they did to you, But anyway, we we move on. You're obviously a big success. So let's get started with this game tomorrow nights on Fox. It's Ohio State, Minnesota. These two teams are no stranger to, you know, playing each other. They played they met on the gridiron 53 times. Before, you know, obviously tomorrow night, But here's what I want to know. Coach Mason. Is this the 11 and to go for some two years ago? Or is this the three and 14 from the pandemic? You know, That's the $64,000 question. Because you know, two years ago PJ flick they had Just a tremendous year. Last year was a big disappointment. Obviously, it was a weird year with the pandemic, and that's That's what he's peddling that that was why they took a step back, so to speak. The quarterback last year. Tanner Morgan, who two years ago was really, really good. He did not have a great year last year. Last year. The defense was absolutely atrocious. They couldn't stop anybody from running the football. Um Now they got everybody back. You know the quarterbacks back they got Tennessee starting starters on offense cannot defense. And so if they're the version of two years ago, they should be pretty formidable. Now one of the differences, you know, you always look at key players. I know Ohio state as to the premiere wide receivers in the country. Minnesota for a couple of years really had some good receivers. You know the Tyler Johnson? They had Rashad Bateman. Both those guys regard They're both playing in the National Football League. So that tells you what kind of players here the next good receiver for them. Is Chris Robin Bell, who's been injured and you're not sure if he's going to play or not. So you know, I don't care how good a quarterback or he's going to throw the football, too. And so that that's really a step back and So I think the big question is they get the line back and they've been young. They're not young anymore. The running back Mohammed Ibrahim is really good. I thought he was the best back in the Big 10 a year ago. He is a tough customer. And he will be good. If they block room. He'll get executed. You all the Buckeye fans will I'm going to say pleasantly surprised. They will be impressed. You know, by this young man, and if they can play defense, um A lot better than they did last year. You know, I think they give Buckeyes the game. Over Coach of the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Glenn Mason, also Buckeye attended the Ohio State University. Glenn I know you told another radio station. What was it? Maybe yesterday? You made your prediction for this season opener? Who do you think it's going to be? And why? Well, let me just tell you this. It was at the state fair is at the state fair. As I look, as I looked, looked around, there was a huge audience. Didn't see any scarlet and gray sitting out there. You know what I'm talking about? Ah, you were afraid you were getting, and I saw I saw a lot of room and gold and I'm there. The guy asked me Okay. What's your prediction? So anyway, you know, I'm I might be done, but I'm not stupid. So so you're there and you say, Well, I'm picking the golfers. They all cheer they all run up. And they high fire and they think you're the greatest guy in the world. I'm picking the Buckeyes. I got booed out of the place. You were afraid you would get pelted with cheese Kurds. Well, well, First of all, they say, Hey, we're happy. They fired That guy. You say you think the golfers they all they all start writing letters to the administration. Why did you fire that guy? Uh, this is true. Hey, by the way, but they although we all know they wouldn't have that new stadium without you, coach. We? We all know this. Well, it was it was something that was really needed The dome I think anybody in the big then you know would tell you it was the worst playing facility. Ah, in the big 10, year in and year out. Oh, yeah. You were a tenant. There you was not your home field. It was the Twins and the Vikings. Uh And, uh, so you know, I don't know if I'm responsibly started talking openly talking about it taking a risk and the reason I did that, Because I felt it. I never thought it would get done during my tenure, which it didn't. But I didn't want the coach to follow me, uh, to come in and say, Hey, you know, this dome is terrible. We needed an on campus stadium. And then everybody say, Well, the guy before you never complained about it. And so we got the ball rolling. And and then, Uh uh, You know it. It became a reality. It is really It's not the shoe. I can tell you that. No, no, but it really is a nice college. Football player facility first class and I.

"Just a few seconds away, catching up with Tanya J. Powers of Fox News and some Hopefully, good news regarding this covert 19 stimulus bill with our small businesses, just a few things to know. Before you head out this morning, we'll get out to about 38 today. It will continue to get warmer day by day through the end of the week. 54. Can you believe it? By Friday. Also yesterday, Governor Mike DeWine I said he most likely we pretty much knew this already that that curfew will be extended. It ends tomorrow. That'll probably run through the holidays and a lot of optimism with the beat Michigan game this week on Saturday. Michigan worked out yesterday on Of course, we have glands super excited about Glen Mason, and we're gonna be talking with him coming to play around this hour at 8 35 course. He coached the Minnesota Golden Gophers. He's a Buckeye on top of it, and the Part of the Big 10 network, so he's going to dissect the upcoming game a little bit. Also shout out to Columbus crew. I see We now have an opponent for the MLS Cup on Saturday. The Seattle Yep. So it'll be Columbus crew. I see Seattle MLS Cup on Saturday night. You know what I keep thinking about Is how amazing would it be our final year at Monterey Stadium? It was the first constructed MLS soccer stadium of its kind, and here we wrap up we win the cup. We started there. We end there and we win the cup. I hope I didn't just drink something. There It is. Eight awaits. I'm Brandon Boxer. Thanks again for being with us this morning right now would have jumped to Fox News is Tanya J powers. We have more now on the coronavirus relief bill at this point, and Todd yet not only does this have legs, it's actually walking now. Well, that's that's an optimistic way to put this Yes, it is. It does. It does seem to have more of a bipartisan, you know. Helping along that which is good. This is very this is very good sides are talking. Um it's at $908 billion relief package that we've been we've been hearing about. It does include benefits for employment. I mean unemployment. That's one of the big things. A lot of people just want to look. Is there any more money coming? There's so many people hurting right now. Unemployment benefits would would be included in this. There's relief for restaurants and other small businesses. There is help for state and local governments to pay teachers and police and other workers like that he does so far does not include direct payments to Americans. So those Checks that people got, you know, from the government back in spring, right? This particular generation of this relief package would not include that. However, there are still some Democrats and some Republicans who are pushing for it. Um, so you know, if enough of both of those camps Bush. Possibly There's also the The big sticking point, which is that liability shield that we have we have seen. The GOP has basically demanded that there be a liability shield for companies and organizations in this and that has been a huge sticking point on, you know, I'm getting something together and everybody agreeing on that so Who knows if if you know, the Democrats will trade the liability shield for the stimulus direct payments to it to Americans. I don't even know if that's part of what they're talking about. But those are two of the big things that you know, kind of Are Won't say sticking points on both sides, but definitely some some stumbling blocks along the way to getting this done. Fox News is time to shape our with us this morning and NewsRadio 16 w TV and it's on you real quick. Are you hearing any kind of date? When this could possibly wrap up? I I know you. You have the government, you know, running out of money here in the stop gap that Needs to be taken care of by the 18th. I know they're gonna vote on that tomorrow. But what about the particular stimulus bill itself? Well, I don't give them another week to not only figure out the government funding, you know, an award is shut down. It also gives them another week to deal with coronavirus relief. Um, you know, hopefully they will use that time wisely and come up with something because There's got to be a lot of a lot of people who have been hurting for months and months, especially with us unemployment numbers and, you know, waiting for something to happen. Um, you know, it's it's you've got to be you gotta you gotta wonder if there are members of Congress thinking. Look, I got to get elected again. How am I going to do this? If we you know, aren't doing something for the people that were representing It's a good point and real quick on a side note we heard over the weekend about the president's personal attorney, it Rudy Giuliani. If I'm not mistaken, the 76. He was hospitalized with covert 19. How's he doing at this point this morning? We've heard. I'm not sure how you doing as far as a status this morning, but I do know that he has said that he is recovering. Um he is like you said hospitalized, which is obviously something you know it's it's if it's serious enough for him to be in the hospital. It's definitely something that um you know is serious in general. He is, as you mentioned his age. Hey, is in that and that, you know, age range Where you You have to take this very, very seriously, He says he tweeted as in the last scene of day or so, he says, he's recovering. And you know he's feeling okay, so hopefully he will continue, Tonto. Go along positive lines there and come out. All right. Time to say Powers. Fox News. These ready of 16 W TV had It is a 13 Brandon Boxer, by the way, Fox News also reporting early yesterday that President Trump planned on Sonny, an executive order sometime today that will prioritize giving covert 19 vaccines to US American citizens. Before the government will help other nations might be an effort to may be call. Some worries about the vaccination shortage is the problem is is Fizer, If you didn't know was privately funded. So there was. It wasn't a part of operation, you know, warp speed like modern awas, So it might be a little bit of a game changer on executive director of Faster cares. It says that it's too early really to know right now. To be concerned about whether or not the U. S can get its hands on the 500 million additional doses from Fizer. Saying What? That they haven't even secured the 100 million doses. This, according to Forbes, that put out this report yesterday. It's certainly something to pay attention to, but we also have Adorno. "I'm joined now by Andy. Yorke of SP nation the daily gopher which covers the the Minnesota Golden gophers football team. Obviously the the giants drafted a pair of players from Minnesota in the seventh round of the of the draft so We'll talk about those and I'm joined now by Andy York. Andy how you doing. I'm doing great. Thanks for having me. Hey thanks for coming on so You know to giants in two of to Minnesota players taken Taken by the giants in the seventh round any surprise for you that that either of those players were drafted a drafted or be went so late in the draft. Yeah you know what's what's Carter Coughlin No spreads he was drafted. You know most most mock drafts. I'd seen him going anywhere between the fifth and the seventh round His biggest thing going for him is he's a bit of twitter size You know he played sort of more of a Russian type from Minnesota But originally has more of a a linebacker type body You know so that that's his biggest downfall and probably why he dropped the Seventh Round Chris. Williamson. It's a little bit of a surprise. He got drafted. You know a couple of going in the seventh round but I think the general was he was going to be one of those sort of priority undrafted free agent type players and you almost wonder if if sort of the the covert thing had to deal with some of these players who who teams might have wanted to not necessarily get into bidding wars for but they wanted to get on the roster. I know Taking a look at the Vikings I follow. They did that with a lot of their picks drafting players in the seventh round Said they would. Have you know their own negotiating rights rather than having to to bid with other teams so A little surprise Williamson went but Gladis he's going to be in New York. And hopefully you can play well off to get a roster spot all right. So let's actually individually. We'll talk about both of these guys. Let's talk about Carter Coughlin. I obviously You know it's funny because I did a bunch of simulated mock drafts before Before the real draft I I was doing one every Sunday. Just your basic seven round mock just to give giants fans something to talk about and because because of the last name because of Tom Coughlin. Just for grins. Pretty much through Carter. Coughlin into the end of a couple of those mock drafts and just just to use the Coughlin name and in Lo and behold they they drafted Carter Coughlin seventh-round. So what exactly are the giants getting here and is this a guy who really can contribute to an NFL defense? Yeah Carter Coughlan. You're getting the kid that has incredible heart incredible football Iq You know he he just. He knows where he needs to be on the field at all times and he's going to do his best to get where he needs to be to help his team out As I said the the lack of Of size is going to be Coughlin's major downfall. And maybe why he rejects. More is a really good special teams player than he does a starter as a linebacker in the NFL But you know Carter played rush for Minnesota Basically You know take your pick how you want to put it if you if you're not familiar with Mrs his defense. He sort of was more of a cross between. Ah OUTSIDE BACKER. And a three four and a D end in a four three but did a lot of a of containing. The Ron did a lot of rushing. The passer ended up Twenty two and a half sacks Minnesota put some third all time in school history So he can get to the quarterback you know I think he If he gets the opportunity and works with the with the giants for years I think he has a potential to be a nice blitzing outside backer But I think the where you're going to really see him make a difference at least initially is going to be on special teams. He's he's going to be that special teams Dynamo. He'll bust his butt down there and make a make a tackle whether it be on the on the kick coverage of the punt coverage He'll lay a big blackout to try and spring a return man he just he just has that football. Iq He knows where he needs to be and he gets there and he does his job. That's the that's the best thing you can ask for football player and it sounds like he's done both on the out as an outside linebacker he's played a little bit with his hand in the ground and standing up as well. Yeah he has he you know. He started his career. As as a true outside linebacker And then in Minnesota's new sad under PJ flack moved more to this Russia and type. His junior senior year really really. Was you know both used as a as a designated? Pass rusher trying to get to the quarterback and as a bit of a run containment on the outside So he's got. He's got experience with both hand in the grass and and stand up You know like I said he has his. Iq is off the Charts Football Iq. He'll be able to. He'll be adapt to wherever the giants. WanNa use them The biggest thing is going to be getting him continued to grow some size At Here I've got his numbers here. Sorry at six three to thirty six. He's probably obviously smaller than you'd like to see for a Russian but yet he's got some room to grow He's he's a bigger linebacker It's just going to be getting that. Strengthen that speed build up but like I said you know he'll he'll be a special teams dynamo. He'll do whatever he needs to do to get the job done. And I think I would be surprised if he he works his way onto the giants roster doing that this fall. Nice the It it was so weird because the giants drafted out they had. They had ten picks four of them in the seventh round and four of their last five picks guys that play either off the ball or or outside linebacker so It looked so they're looking for something there with no doubt about that. No it's true and you know. And he's got some good connections the area Ryan Connell is drafted a year ago. He was a high school teammate. He ended up going to Wisconsin at Minnesota. Gophers we're trying to recruit him as well high school teammate of Carter Coughlan Blake cashman. Who PLAYED FOR THE NEW YORK? Jets obviously different team but same stadium. Same area also is cool. Teammate of of Colleen Cashman Cashman of course went to the U. And then and came out after his senior year last year so You know all three linebackers from the same high school so you can tell that Impaired High School. Minnesota is put some quality players into the. Nfl certainly sounds like it. I know that the that the giants are really high on on Ryan. Conley unfortunately had his head his rookie. Season SHORT-CIRCUITED I believe after only three games by a knee injury. And if he comes back and doesn't lose anything physically from the injury that he suffered then. Then he should be a good player for the giants. Yeah you know it's that it's that same. They're they're very similar in their playing style. I think so you know I think The constantly has a little bit better chance of like you said seeing more standard defense playing time. But I wouldn't. I wouldn't give any doubt coughlan working his way up over the course of a season to all right andy. So let's let's talk a little bit about about Chris Williamson now. You know the giants have since Dave gettleman became general manager at the end of the two thousand seventeen season so this is now three off seasons with cattleman in charge. They have spent a lot of draft and free agent capital at the cornerback position. Obviously you know the prevailing theory that I agree with is that you can never have enough. You know enough quality defensive backs where in a defensive backfield does does Williamson fit. Is He an inside corner? Is He an outside corner? Where do you think he'll compete for a role to giants? Yeah I think Williamson probably fits more as an inside corner you know he. He was at Minnesota for two seasons after transferring from Florida and I started his junior season in two thousand eighteen. Moore's outside corner and struggled a bit to be honest. You know didn't quite didn't quite fit for the role late in two thousand eighteen and then all the senior season last year he was moved. Inside is the nickel corner for Minnesota. And that's where he really started to excel You know he's really good at covering slot receivers Really good at Playing playing on the ball Coming up in run protection and making stops that way though I think if Williamson's going to make an impact it's definitely going to be at that inside corner spot now if if I understand correctly he transferred from Florida look mostly like he battled injuries at Florida and it was really sort of opportunity based where just looked like. He wasn't going to get playing time at Florida. There weren't any off the field or outside issues that caused him to leave Florida. If I'm correct that's correct. It's just it was sort of stuck behind a couple of players a place like Florida. You know they bring in Heidi recruits every single year. So all it takes is getting trapped behind one or two guys and you don't really see any opportunities to earn plank time so You know he looked transferred and PJ flack since he took over the University of Minnesota job has been looking for some of those Major major team transfers to come in. We've gotten players from Florida. Alabama Notre Dame was transferred into Minnesota and made pretty immediate impacts. So Wilson was looking for a spot Minnesota give him that chance and and I think he took advantage because obviously if he'd stayed in the screen situation Florida I don't think we'd be talking about him as a as a seven thrown. Nfl draft pick. Oh you're probably right about that and just tell me a little bit about you. Said that he really excelled. Once Minnesota moved him into the slot. Tell me a little bit more if you can about his skill set in whether you believe that he that he has the ability to to be an NFL slot corner. Yeah you know I mean He. He's definitely a a fairly good on ball type corner You know he he's maybe why excelled a little bit more on the inside. It's he's he's not one of those guys that's going to be able to run some of the best receivers in the NFL for twenty thirty yards downfield. He's definitely better off in that short set whereas dealing with shorter shorter routes in the middle of the field You know at times he can be too aggressive Both on the ball and tackling..

"Today's show is coming to you on Thursday April thirtieth as we continue to roll through the off season here for the New York giants continued to discuss. Some of the fallout from the twenty twenty. Nfl draft from some of the roster moves that the giants have made as Joe Judge and Dave gettleman tried to put together a better roster for the giants in the upcoming season after the giants have gone through a couple of years where I think it's twelve wins for the giants in the last three seasons. Hopefully things are going to get better with new head coach. Joe Judge What appears to be a pretty good draft class perhaps a third straight good draft class for general manager. Dave gettleman few things to To talk about with you on today's show we're going to feature a couple of interviews that I did regarding draft prospects first Andy. Yorke of SB nations. The daily Gopher it covers the Minnesota Golden. Gophers is going to come on and talk about the late. Round draft picks Carter Coughlan the linebacker and Chris. Williamson the cornerback. Both of whom were seventh-round picks. Were also going to speak with. Lando Landers Nolan of SP nations. Black Shoe diaries. Landau will be joining us to talk about sixth round. Pick Cam Brown the nittany lions linebacker. Who was the first of four linebackers? The giants drafted with their final five draft choices over the weekend. So we'll talk to both of of those guys about what we might expect from. Some of the new giants wanted to talk about a couple of things before we get to those interviews. Though giants made a couple of of interesting moves this week as they continue to try to build their roster four twenty twenty season they used a rarely used on Excuse me they used a rarely used tender on unrestricted free agent. Marcus golden in an effort to Perhaps bring golden back at a fairly low cost for the twenty twenty season. All in all I think that tender would cost the giants just a little bit more than five million dollars if golden were to sign it and meet the incentives that That are are apparently part of that as well. Interesting move rarely used move in. You know by the giants to use a tender on an unrestricted. Free agent. What they're really trying to do here. What people need to understand? Is that as of today? Golden has not signed tender. He is not part of New York giants. He won't be part of the giants roster on till unless he signs that tender with the giants have really done. Here is taking a shot at keeping golden for a year on a fairly low budget. Low cost deal. They've pretty much set market here by saying you know people other. Nfl teams who might want him. You know this is. This is the market. It's four point one or four point two million dollars plus incentives. And you know if if you're going to want Marcus Golden. You know most likely you're going to have to beat that dollar amount. Marcus golden obviously did not see the market that he thought he might see after a ten sack season with the giants in two thousand and nineteen. Didn't get the the multi year you know. Big Money offers. He might have anticipated getting in free agency. But this is the giants who weren't able to come to a deal with the with today beyond Clowney. They weren't really able to find a way to get unique in Gawk way out of the Jacksonville Jaguars. They weren't able to to find a top tier pass rusher in the draft. This is the giants taking a shot here at at keeping Marcus. Golden perhaps upgrading. Their pass rush in twenty twenty. The giants also claimed Monterey Heart. Ted A defensive back. I believe he plays safety from the Miami Dolphins on waivers. Perhaps not surprising since Patrick. Graham was defensive coordinator in Miami a year ago. That's just the giants adding some depth in the in the back of their defense. They also added Chris Williamson in the in the draft. It's and they added Xavier mckinney in the draft as well so the giants. Obviously although they've they've spent a lot of resources on the defensive backfield in recent years there obviously still trying to upgrade their. They've set up a lot of competition in in training camp whenever we get training camp. So we'll see how all of that plays out but cattleman in Enjo- judge both said over the weekend you know the settlement has said before roster building is a twelve month process. It's ongoing just because the bulk of free agency is done. Just because the draft is done doesn't mean that your roster is set doesn't mean you're done trying to find ways to improve your football team in the giants have proven that this week with the moves that they made on heart edge and on golden will see what happens when you know when we get to whenever we get to a training camp situation. A preseason situation as other players may become available. We'll see if the giants make more moves in an effort to to continue turning over in. Continue trying to improve their roster for the twenty twenty season. Alright giants fans. Let's do this right now. Let's take a short break here for a word from our sponsor after that you will hear interviews I with Andy York of the daily Gopher as we talk about Carter Coughlan and Chris Williamson and then with Lando Lenders Nolan of Black Shoe Diaries. As we talk about Cam Brown. This is Ezra Klein. Host of the PODCAST. In two thousand fifteen is what he was most afraid of a pandemic.

"We are live for the first midwest Bank studios, this he's w MVP Chicago. The Michigan wolverines lead the Minnesota. Golden gophers twenty two to fifteen. But seven twenty nine to go in the first half, Greg Daniels. Doug Gottlieb with you. Michigan state has already advanced to the big ten tournament championship game awaiting either Minnesota or their rival the Michigan wolverines the Spartans. Swept the wolverines during the regular season including the clinching win for the big ten tournament early. Big ten regular season championship shared with the Boilermakers of Purdue this game pretty even statistically as you look across the board. The only difference Michigan has made ten of eighteen Minnesota has made seven of eighteen and that's for the most part the difference. Minnesota's also left some chances. On the board by going one of six from the foul line. So far. The three run outs. I think really loom large the six fast-break points that Michigan has been able to accrue. Run out is when you get a steal, and there's nobody home or a pick six is when you get a steal, and there's nobody home and you get an easy bucket bras on the wing Isaiah livers livers crossover between the legs over two bras. "Think they'd win last night. No, I didn't think they win last night. One thing about it. You gotta have momentum the momentum macgyver right now. That's that's the beauty of tournament. Play like that. Minnesota golden gophers the Penn State lines. Let's take a look at the starting lineup. There's one matchup that Rick, and I have circled in pen with highlighter and everything else. And that is Josh Reeves the big ten defensive player of the year taking on Jordan Murphy, who's the second leading score and the leading rebounder in the conference, and it's a perfect match up a couple of very outlet ick. Undersized guys undecided guys but play power forward. One thing that I learned playing power forward through career is that you gotta make sure that you have that edge. I'm looking at that matchup right now like he's going to be two for male. But also is going to be a team concept defense because when you have guys like us, what would you have a guy like Jordan Murphy, gotta make sure if someone else beats you Jordan Murphy when Minnesota and Penn State got together dominant in that matchup, which ended up being a two point win for the golden gophers at the barn in Minneapolis. He finished the game with nineteen points, twenty one rebounds and six assists. I mean, he was knocking on the door of a quadruple double except for that was a beast when you have a game like that. It's like you're looking at it. You're gonna wow. Did he just get twenty one rebounds? A man that's what you know that you have a special player on your team route. Roots? To say Rick Pitino Richard Pitino is lucky to have a guy. Like, absolutely let's take a look at these starting lineups. It'll be a three guard lineup for the golden gophers..

"Your hardware star the golden gopher women four Minnesota Duluth one and given the shots on goal were forty four to nine. I don't think the game was that close for the one. The BULLDOGS scored the first goal. Gabby Hughes at seven twenty of the first period. And then Minnesota rattled off four straight one in the first two in the second and an empty netter in the third that empty netter netter was sparked by Nicole Campbell per second of the two goals scored in the game. She has thirteen and fourteen now on the season grace some wiggle scored a power play goal per twenty four. And now they will go to the championship game tomorrow against either -sconsin or Ohio State forty four to nine off game. I can't imagine how good that Duluth goalie was because allows goals into an empty net. That's just an incredible. Former spy her. That's Maddy Maddy Rooney Rudy. Yeah. Wow. What game she? Yeah. For canada. Wasn't a candidate. During the plank. But anyway, we want now you have me confused. I thought she was ours. Well, pars meaning the US. No. Okay. Folks, all confused. You back home here. Thoroughly sterling period of hockey by the golden gopher men manure three to nothing lead over Michigan with a three goals on fourteen shots. That's pretty good shooting percentage to well. We'll go back to some soundbites that we collected. Thanks to John Romo from the media part department at the men's athletics hair gathered the audio. So that we could do the edits for you. And for our broadcast this weekend. Let's go back to that. The media scrum. Back here. The first topic is why are the golden gophers ready for the playoffs? Well, boy, are we seeing that come to fruition. You know, I think I have to touch a couple of buttons here while we're ready to go, Dan. Are you ready here for us? So this is Tyler see why are the golden gophers ready for the playoffs? Our time. We're planner hockey the way that we want to be playing. He's had some ups analysis. Whereas, you know, the seasons has gone so far, but we've always talked about the entire years you've got to be peaking at that dinner year. So we're planning our confident our game. This is a confidence that we have seen. Come and go. Yeah. But this is the longest that we've seen it is. And that's something that the coaching staff has been talking with us about all season long. Like play one really good game. And then you have a bad one all sleep. But now, I mean, they've won four straight games. Six seven coming into this one today, and that is coming to fruition. Can you? I don't know if you're sensing theirs. But as I'm watching and just watching body language. I'm watching the way they're playing this game. They're really into this thing here tonight though this afternoon, they're they're they're very confident. They're poised for not running around is like there's no doubt in what they're going to do next. Now granted, I don't know. I don't think they got the back from Michigan that we kinda thought they would get from a team playing. Was some desperation the season may end today. But nonetheless, Minnesota took advantage of that played their best game made sure they'll fire them. All right. Let's talk a little bit about special teams, and for that will bring in Jack Ramsay, although it wasn't much factor in this period. Michigan had the only power play in the Minnesota penalty killers for doing what they've been doing for the better part of the year. Maybe more than that is extensively. Good penalty killing. Here's Jack Ramsay on special teams. I think our special teams are rolling pretty star. We got everything figured also. Yeah. You gotta play smart. Not take any stupid Pele's. Good to take. Special teams. Penalties might have been a little bit more of an issue in a rugged series against Arizona state. But I think what we're seeing here is a little bit more classic game. But I also see that the message has gotten through the entire lineup that if you're going to take a penalty as deck says it better be a hard one you better it better, be worthwhile. You'd better be in a scoring can't go take some as Moscow it'll take a selfish penalty. Mel Pearson said the same thing with your interview earlier too that he didn't.

"Sure. We might freeze. Their hamburger buns off. We can always put more underwear under the underwear under our over where to us winter is no big deal. That's why we play the new gold north scratch game. It's got a top prize of one hundred thousand dollars because fortune favors the bulls and the bowl get out and play. Minnesota lottery must be eighteen or older to play. Minnesota fifty-six Purdue fifty four the boilers wrote a sixteen to six run. Amir Coffey hit some free throws to get Minnesota. The two point lead. Gophers were up by twelve at fifty two thirty eight of the fourteen fourteen Mark a little less than seven minutes later Purdue had tied it or do. We'll have the ball on a chance to take the lead after a gopher turnover. Now twelve turnovers on the day for Minnesota, Mike Grimm along with Spencer tollackson from our second deck perch here. A huge game for Minnesota. Visit like eight minutes left you're up to in a lot of ways your NC double A tournament hopes hanging on these next eight minutes. Absolutely. Don't get this one tonight and your dog. Now, you got to find a way to either win at Maryland rattle off tournament. Right. And as an eight or nine seed, you gotta face Purdue Michigan or Michigan state in that next game. So what are the odds the path and math? We've talked about the lose tonight the path and mass gets very tricky win tonight. And you've elevated your stock to the point where you might be able to sneak your way in whether you win or lose the rest of the way, but along long seven fifty three luck. Gophers have to play like they're not trying to hold on that to stay aggressive. Here's yeah. And I think Amir Coffey can be the one to set that tone for Minnesota. The last eight minutes of the game Goldwyn win this one please played a win. Don't play not to lose. Golden win this game. Two with eight to go. Go produced five of eight from three here in the second half sign on the right wing at the slot working on calcium. Who's back in the game with coffee mcbrayer stock on a Murphy now to Edwards with thirteen back near half court waits for a screen from. Works to the free throws up a shot. Back iron. No rebound tipped out. Coffey has the rebound on the run. It's a two on one. Amir eurostepped layup, no rebound Boudreau boy. A big miss their seven twenty to play gophers up to. Nice move. Just missed the one foot. Layup easier said than done through two players Boudreau. Here's Edwards into the paint. Lost the ball. No foul. Call Murphy, the rebound ahead for Coffey. And a three onto Amir centers. The ball rifles into the corner to mcbrayer. He drives into the paint. His eight footer short arms rebound his office again. Patino yelling at crispy ages. Sat on a stool. Here is I produce hit two big trees here in the second half. He had one in the first test Klein working on Calcio into the paint leans in up balance shot offense rebound Boudreau foul called and this could be hook and hold reviewable play Stockman. Commits the foul. Heels third not that we had the best of angles. But I think you've got to take a look at that. They're talking about it, and they will review it for the hook and horse, sir for that. No. They're reviewing the shot clock weather. No, I think that means we're going to review it. Okay. The one that Murphy had on the hairball three on the coffee miss. They did not review absolutely hook and hold without a doubt. That is. Absolutely. It's a hook and Gujral grabs Stockman. That's my point. Yeah. It's going to be on Boudreau. We'll see the foul was called on Stockman. The foul was called on Stockman. So let's see now. You're right. There's a definition of a hook and hold and how the call should be reversed. They should take three seconds to look at this. All you want to lay a little on air wager of milk, shake or something for after the game. Etiquette? We look at it through maroon and gold glasses. I get it. But there's if you're serious about this rule, they need to look specifically at this instance, and implemented rule based on that play. It was textbook Roy's in an inside position. And grabs documents hooks with his wrists. Absolutely. Goes and gets the offensive rebound. Chris beavers in Larry Scotto are this. We're watching it. I mean, it couldn't be any clearer. But we'll see what these guys choose to do. They would have to reverse the call which they should. I mean, it's not a foul on Stockman either way, even though that's what it was called. And now they're going to bring Courtney green that ought to help as he'll come and watch. Six thirty seven to golden gophers by two. All right. So while they're in the official review. Yeah. They're going to reverse it like they're talking about it right now. This is going to be Minnesota's ball. So we'll get the announcement here officially let's see they're talking to Matt painter. And how long does painter leave is big on the floor. Yeah. Boudreaux's reaction was just that they're gonna reverse this. Call got it. Right. So you get the milkshake after the game. Confirm the common. Follow on thirty five months stock. The gophers. Wavering. One follow on number twelve. He can't pronounce the Boudreau. Thirty-five Stockman will two free throws. Minnesota will take the ball out on the baseline. So it was not a shooting situation for Boudreau. So Stockman will get fouls free throws. I should say another Schuler shoes trip to the charity stripe. Fifty six fifty four. So Stockman gets charged with the foul and Boudreau gets called for the foul. At the line is Stockman free. Throw is in and out. Gophers have not been as good at the free throw line here in the second half eight of thirteen they were really good in the first half. Next. One four Stockman is good interesting. Lots toes the three throw line or lack thereof. There's about six inches between his lead foot and the free throw line never told us that before gophers get the point they lead by three and they have the ball six thirty seven to play Stockman Cowher, stall coffee and Murphy on the floor for Minnesota coffee. In the backboard against eastern. Amir does not play against a lot of guys at his position his close to his size and eastern stronger and not quite as tall. But he's at six six here's Coffey off of a screen centers of all of the top of the floor task down for Murphy, working on harms lost the ball and a travel called. Another gopher turnover. Minnesota just too many turnovers here Spence in the last. Well, no gophers about scored a field goal in five minutes and thirty five seconds. They're over their last five their only points have been at the line. They lead by three and we talked about the fact that Minnesota had to avoid that four five six minutes scoring drought. They have been able to do that in bus produce right back in this ball game. Three point lead for Minnesota too, many turnovers Edwards for the tie in and out. Murphy another rebound for the golden. Gophers look for Carson Edward his fourteenth. He has fourteen rebounds, thirteen points. No points in the second half Coffey out front Edwards now two of ten from three six of twenty three from the floor. There's ever night. Minnesota might win. Here's calcium along. Three. I. Soda upset sixty fifty four proud coming alive. Five thirty five no one using their seat. But chino hit Macau going. Here's harm to eastern out thought. Let's see what the big ten leaders have as an answer fine office screen open three an air ball offense. I threw it out. Tried to find ever on the wing, and he was not home. Gophers the stop and get the ball up by six sixty to fifty four. We thought needed to hit a couple any knock that one down signing time. Again, this season we've seen Minnesota not be able to hit the big three the three the three that gives them momentum. That might be the three that does it for Minnesota. Gophers by six we approached the five minute Mark Stockman against I forgive to mcbrayer, right wing. He just came in for stall, not a calcium straight on threes. Tried to Bank it in and brick it and the rebound comes off too. I for a heat check three there by the freshman under five to play northwest. Perdue down six with the ball. They have to timeouts. Here's Klein gives the harms out front right of the art ways. Debits working on the dribble. Here is Edwards and open three. It's no good. He stays cold. Rebound tipped and it comes off the coffee. The gophers three onto a mere flies into the paint control shot short. Deep. Rebound comes off to eastern. They want a three onto eastern working on calcium layup. No. But a foul on culture his Ford. The line will be no gel eastern who's one for two. He's got nine points. He's averaging seven ever night as I said a couple of possessions. Golden gophers will win on their home floor against a boilermaker team ranked eleventh that might be tonight Carson Edward six twenty four and two of eleven from three others have picked up including Klein with twelve and thirteen eastern can get into double figures. He has two shots. I one is good. He has ten had an elitist five with four thirty two to play. Sixty two fifty five. Gophers at Rutgers had a five point lead with four minutes to go hoping they can avoid that fate. Missed that one rebound to Brock stole. The lead is five sixty to fifty five four and a half to play. Prayer gives to Murphy out front a hand off to Amir Coffey well away from the basket thirty feet out gives to stall at the slide. Now.

That's blocked and goes wide and finally down the ice by this party's who felt the pressure or this freshman drill fresh material had a balled up back there like bee's nest a hornet's nest pinned up against the wall. Spartans full is really brings it outside of Minnesota blue line. Turns it over a shot right back in by Austin KMart. Wrinkles. Check. Dig in there as Austin Kamer as well. Puerto Rico Lewandowski the trail upfront gophers breakout. Down the right wing. It's really across the line checked off the play carrying on his Ramsey, and he'll just softly send it back deeper into the Michigan state zone. Here comes back Osbourne vice to the right for came to. Charleston framing Rico down a piece of it sending it on net by the gophers, Robson Osborne. Holds the blue live. Walking in the roster across is in a snap through the goal crease. Just one off the stick of Mylan. Weather the storm with these guys. Twelve more seconds eight seconds now that should do it for the period. Yeah. Why I tell you? We those guys on the ice while you just have to look and watch. Amazing display by that cage. They're fabulous. That's why I I don't know what other lying around the country. Frank can be better than what these guys they bring the offense every single chef. Yeah. And they say. Generate strikes. Starting at the blue light. I guy at the blue line pressure is on and it's pretty darn relentless after that. And I'm official edge in shots on goal. Sixteen twelve from Minnesota. So they boosted their total of shots base with a little bit of a power play. But at one time, I think it was about nine. Yeah. See state was held at nine shots on goal. For a good eight minutes in the middle of the period. Yeah. Yeah. So two very effective. Power plays for the golden. Gophers won power play goal at a one one score here. At the end of the first twenty minutes of play with good, sir. Scarring for state and McLaughlin for the golden gophers. Yeah. That was a nice comeback downstairs with us. Right now is Tyler Nanu part of that.

"Apple carplay functionality. Requires a compatible iphone tethered with an approved data cable into the USB Mediaport. Apple carplay is a registered trademark of Abilene. With our pre game show here three marina. Mariucci has Minnesota golden gophers get set to play host to the Penn. State Nittany lions they first afford games between these two clubs this year. Last year. It didn't go very well for the gophers. We talked already about the four straight losses at the end of the season during regular season play. Minnesota one out of four games and then lost playoff games as well. So they did not have a whole lot of success against the team. But one thing we know Frank is the gopher players are going to have to be acutely aware of the Penn. State transition gaming is eight do generate a ton of offense. They lead the nation in goal scoring by more than a goal a game over second-place, a cloud. Think about that. That's unheard off town. That's like four goals. They they score five goals game say steak scores. Four goals. Yeah. We're only halfway through the season. That's a huge difference. Well, you did a great point. I mean, we talked about the non conference schedule to us should appear to be a week schedule. But when you look at it their strength of schedule is the fourth toughest in the nation. And it's up there. I mean, if you look at the Arkham, there's two ways won't get into technicals. You can look at it through the RPI look through it through crash cans rating America, call they're still seven top strength of schedule. You know by comparison the gophers RPI strength of schedule his fourteenth. So there's a there's a gap. These guys have played quality teams are not doing badly. What's amazing to me? Coach guy Gdanski has been able to maintain this run and gun style. Yeah. For six years now. Yeah. Usually, you have a drop something they go. They do they go. And they know where nor is. And so did the golden gophers give me a moment. If you have a couple of numbers, I've got to unlock my my computer. Here's the other thing. I've noticed with Penn State is they've only played five games this year. That's important twelve home games on only five on the road. And they have not played yet since the break after Christmas. So they could be a little bit of rusty. That's something coach Moscow talked about with his gophers last weekend. We did see that for both Minnesota and ferris will we see that tonight from Penn State well that plus two significant losses to their lineup, and we can discuss them together or separately and one edition. Evan bell. All good point. They're pretty high on. Tell vita. As I say, right. Yep. I'll tell you how VDI I knew I missed a syllable there. He's a fan. He's a sixth round pick for New Jersey. He's with the Finnish team at the world junior. Captain of that team. By the way, he's got you balls tonight. There are four nothing in the first period. Oh, okay. All right. Pretty good player and Edinburgh third. The bucks of the golden gophers last year. Yeah. In those four games that we moaned about four and one of the better players on team USA. They catch a break and just happens to lead the nation in scoring. Also, who's the addition Evan bell who played at Merrimack a year ago and was ineligible until tonight. But they think he's really good. But we haven't seen him expect him to be their offense. On the back end something that they they blocked a little bit. Yeah. The only getting five goals again. Oh. Hey this team, you know, them, right? They like to shoot it. Let's go to junior gates on this. Ten states style of play. Guys. Pretty spread out scoring. With that. Got a few lines. You all keep going on? So I think that uptempo officer style. They're just kind of get it so race after they got. No. But if they wanna play that way. So. So. Their mistakes. At that stage style. Mm. So. No, we're looking forward to it. But you'll you'll be a good team. And that kind of goes into what Bob Dole was telling us in the previous segment and that is a good offense. Come times could be a good defense. And that's what you might have to have here and here again junior gates about having good net front presence for the golden gophers, stinky that we've been trying to work on getting that Trump presence. You know, you see a lot of goals. That's how it goes. Good at this level. And you know, if they see the puck is gonna stop it. So you know, it's one thing to begin shots from now side and not having much. Looks fancy in the numbers. But in reality, you're not doing a whole lot. So making sure that we always have at least one day. Bucks in that way. Folks at a summary from coach Moscow, we have to monitor all the attack to. We're not going to be a team that just wants to sit and play defense. So first and foremost, we have to monitor a check of attack make them defend for something to take more than we take probably the biggest thing if you wanna go up and down the requisite. Someone can't turn pucks overhead. Take penalties make them go two hundred feet when you make mistakes. They they get to offense. All right. We'll see what happens not too far away from the start of this game between the goals and Penn State back for more gopher hockey after this from learfield. Everyone needs a little something to get going in the morning. So wake up to a warm.

"The w the w layoffs tonight with double header on ESPN two wings mercury than the rematch of the last two WNBA finals links sparks single elimination. Lindsay Whalen set down Michelle Steele before her final regular season game, and the WNBA Waylon is already said to be the head coach of the Minnesota golden gophers, women's basketball team next season. Let's take a listen. You've meant so much to your hometown so much to the state of Minnesota. What is it gonna be like to walk off that homeport the last time it'll be bitter. Sweet. I think just there's been so many years so many great moments that I don't know. Hopefully everyone will look back on the years and see how much fun we've had and the different things you've been able to accomplish, and we've done it, you know, and being at home with the fans, its been really special, Wanda Stu birds said the other day that you're the kind of player motivates you but also makes you smile. Is that something that you're gonna bring to the you when you're a head coach? What do you think your coaching style is going to be find out here? I don't know. We'll see. I mean, yeah. I mean, I don't know. I guess it's, you know, it's a really great compliment. This would spend the players is try to make sure that everybody feels really good, really confident. That's been one of my my leadership styles. I don't think it'd be two different different because. I'm the same person. Better better better. You mentioned that you had no regrets in this career that you've left it all out on the court. What's driven you? All of these years. Just love to compete. Love to play. Look to have fun. It's worth, sir. Really fun to me. So I just wanted to do those things as well as I could. And and once I realized that this could be a career I wanted to obviously play to the best of my -bility and eventually when championships into all those things. What is it that you would like to be remembered for as a as the winning player in the WNBA? Every night? Every night you go up there to leave it all on the court and to have done that more than anybody else's. I mean, that's go. Every time you come into the gym is to win. So it's pretty cool.
