Remembering Chadwick Boseman, Best of 2020 MTV VMAs

"Welcome to daily pop. It was a difficult weekend here in Hollywood as we all learned about the tried to death of Chadwick both men are tribute to him is coming up last night he was honored at Vm as this year was definitely different but you know what? It was still one hell of a show. I truly never could have imagined that someday I would be given an award like this that honored me. For so many of my passions. Is Rough as been. There have been incredible moments of inspiration. We've seen heroes go above and beyond and with the black lives matter. Movement. We've. Seen our generation up. Hard to celebrate. So I'm going to say justice for Jacob Laken justice for Briana Taylor. Quiz. She looks good. By you by the way I was so skeptical of this via may because I? Feel like a lot of the vm as is all the little things that we catch like the jokes and like the artists, reactions to things but the performances in compromise chloe and Halle came through executed. So amazing. I. Was so impressed by them. Dolgin cat her first time performing on the stage killed. It for a first timer and Miley Cyrus I'm GonNa Bring. You guys on a train real quick. You know when you're older and you look back at all the moments that share and Madonna had and they look so different than it performed in different clothes and different looks and we thought it was legendary reliving through that with Miley Cyrus right now, she is a legend in the making. This woman, transform herself and transform herself and bring just her essence to this stage time and time. Again, she is an icon that's an extra Conrad there I appreciate it the throwback to the wrecking ball but changing it to a disco ball I was like I like this I think is good. Listen I miss the audience I missed the live in rations. This isn't how I want the show to be every year but I did thoroughly enjoy and I do think like in quarantine we were missing having a show like this something to look forward to see some live performances. So I think we're just grateful to get. Anything. I think they did the best that they could. I definitely do I think miley Cyrus looked amazing. I. tweeted that last night I disagree about the wrecking ball thing I was kind of like, okay like I want to see a different ending but she looked unbelievable there were a lot of really good performances Kiki. We all said this before the show she did an incredible job lawless Avi she really did she looked good I loved all outfit changes and I just think that they did the best that they could. So the show was entertaining but obviously, it's not. It's not what we're used to seeing. You know, of course, always miss the red carpet my it was still you know well done. There was no Napoli. Live. because. So much of it was prerecorded obviously throughout the week that there was no air. You know there was no room for awkward moments that really and you kind of love that about an award show right? You love those awkward mildly what's been Love that you'd be like there's nothing going wrong turn everything is going to be under control and. I would love that if I was hosting it but as a viewer, I, like this level up. But. Kiki back to give. A shout onto her stand an empty room. But pretend like you have an entire audience. Cheer you on is an. Insanely difficult and she brought the energy she made me feel like she was truly talking to a crowd which was one hundred. I would have done that job down and walk away from money very easily. But the thought of doing that without a crowd and holding everybody's attentions for two hours. You couldn't pay me to get on that stage. And she asked. Leslie for sure. Good job. Well, we have to talk about lady Gaga because literally. The night belonged to her, she crushed it serving up four different looks for her five acceptance speeches. She even had a different mask for each wardrobe change real quick. What did you guys think masks I thought I I. Didn't think she needed it for every outfit. I, appreciate it. It's. It's a stain the definitely a statement. It's definitely kind of it just in theme with WHO Lady Gaga is I feel like I realized after the Third Mask Oh, she's incorporating a mask and outfit but at first I was just like this lady Gaga Cheetah kind of goes forward in terms of fashion there's always that element of shock value. So I didn't even realize that she was trying to even go the route of wearing some sort of face covering our masks. So it just sort of worked but like I agree looking backwards like you didn't need one for every single outfit, but it works for her tattoos agreed. Okay. I disagree. I think you'RE GONNA make a statement and you're going to tell people to mask up and to serve your country in this way then you walk the walk and she did it I will say I love that Lady Gaga Connoisseur went from you know the meat wet dress wearing person all the way to the glamorous on who accepted that Oscar in that beautiful Valentino dress and to see her incorporate the outrageous with the classic Hollywood you saw that in each outfit looking at this unbelievable moment you. Dress you could've seen Oscar stage you could have saw the. Wearing that to the Golden Globes but she took it. She made it her own.

Edie Falco, 'Tommy'

"Are watching. Tommy on CBS. Because it starts my guest today eighty. Falco a welcome. Thank you see. I didn't want to introduce you with that long list of your credit. So Gosh that would just take almost any Golden Globes things you know you should have a whole necklace or embracing the bat but here you aren't Tommy Palang. The chief of police. Somebody had to do it. You put a cop before we probably in is where the war right The chief I know right now crazy. They apparently thought I could do it. Here am why. Do People think you could be charged? Apparently that is a common misconception about my kids there is nobody less worthy of that That there's nobody no my kids anybody's kids are never going to think of you as anything to really you know on the earth or you're in charge more you're going to do that but explain to the world out there. That hasn't watched it yet. Who Tommy is. She is the chief of police in Los Angeles herself as a New Yorker next Nypd COP and She finds herself sort of on the other side of the country and leading a group of people. She doesn't really know in the city. Sch Isn't completely familiar with and that's how we start. You might as well be in your top two because that's where you live. Yeah it's where I live. So they said what? Well they I you know I I get stuff sent to me and I read it to see if I'm interested. I don't I'm not interested much these days. Which worries me? I don't know what has changed but I read the vendors movie. Yeah we're working on please. I know you do have a fifteen year old son so it would be. It would give me an in with him that I don't presently hat but I read the script for Tommy and I thought it was very good but it takes place in La. And so. I put it aside sadly and then My manager came back to me and said well what if they were shoot in New York and I thought he was. Just you know it was a pipe dream and then turns out they ward and they did and we did you go. Well decide to remake the thief of Bagdad. It'll be shot west West village which is can get it done. So what's this I hear about that? You travel with a van filled with pomp. The Art Department is the scenic. People are really they get their long before we do show up there and their palm trees in front of the House and all of this very colorful foliage. When we're all in Parkas you know I don't know but I buy it and I know we're not in La. But I I walk up to the Seine. I'm like wow very impressive to strike. I still do but they were able to pull it off and we do a lot of interiors so that could be anywhere but you bring Your Own New York Ness to this party. I that's great. It fits in the character. Does everything people look at you like they look at me or anybody else's in New Yorker when we go to La. What's the matter with you? Why are you wearing black and white? I don't understand stuff. They hired me so you didn't even go there for like one. We had one day. I shot one in L. A. And we got a lot out of it because I was up on in Griffith Park or something where I was someplace to. They got lots of long view pictures of us in La just to Kinda Cement. The location think it's only fair. I see enough movies that are supposed to be in New York. That are shot in Vancouver and I go way it. That's up late clean on we. Just don't do at all. That's right time. Tommy herself as a character is is to me wonderfully complicated. Oh good all really messed up. And I'd love to see this woman who's in charge be like all of us when somebody says you have authority over this like we all delude ourselves. Who are parents that we have with authority for their right but she she had a messed up marriage her daughter and she don't have the best relation right? Her husband's an actor right. Oh my God. Can I mistaken you? Imagine and she's a lesbian looking for love in Los Angeles while being the chief of police data enough for you to have roll camera to that one but yeah she's got up and who doesn't mean. We all have all thinkers. I think people are ready to see that you know complicated people with complicated lives. And how we're GONNA handle it and so what? I think I like most is that she does see as her priority to kind of get this police department in shape even knowing that there's going to be pushed back the men that she's a female she doesn't know anybody she hasn't necessarily earned her place in that precinct. She knows they're going to be people who are not happy about that nonetheless. You show up ready job and makes that the priority and how these other things fall into place kind of what we hope people will come back to see. But whenever I've talked to you about your life here in New York you've always said to me. You know what I love to do on terrified. Stay to I'm John Cancer. You know my my sign and homebody. Just don't WANNA go anywhere. I win every place and I did so during your whole doubles years. That's right apparently out in the world but yeah I love being home. I have a home. That's comfortable and I love my kids and my dog's my friends come over. I don't know yes. I go out occasionally but I love being home and I love especially working these very long days and coming home to my house in my bed and my loved ones. You know what's important everybody's there everybody's there and even if they're not always happy to see the look of disgust on their faces when I when I recognize. I'm it's do. They comment on your performances. No I I. I'm not entirely sure. They know what I do and I'm completely on. They must've at least watch. I know my daughter said so. The shows on Thursday nights. I said Yeah. She goes We don't have to watch it. Do we know Mace. I won't make you watch kind of worked on it. Because she was onset so much. My daughter almost twelve worked on it. Yes many way would make me laugh. They are endlessly. Funny my kids. Yeah and that's what keeps us all going. Oh for sure. You may not look like you at a spa but that's You know I can't remember totally my life before them. I can't even doing with my time was was it the children when you adopted was the son. The first one was that. What changed everything for you. You know there were a lot of little things along the way. The decision to adopt him was was huge. And then I was talking to somebody recently about the moment they hand you your child who is over or is it like the get to see the baby. I it's every say that one no of course you have no idea. It was connected to this birth mother. Well in advance of her giving birth so They actually handed me my trial. And I'm looking at this little thing. Yeah it's huge and your life changes. It just changed national. Who I thought was like. You're leaving like you guys were the book. He was very nerve wracking. The whole ride home. My friends were in the back looking at him in his seat. Like all right. Yeah No. He's still he's still good. It's really really nerve wracking. But I think every parent goes so. I don't WanNA kill this baby. Try because you can't. This can't be happening to be out to do it. I changed my mind. None of that's allow no. That's the thing is the relentlessness of the whole the whole procedure. I think it's good for us. Well I think it's good for everybody because it's going to happen. It's going to totally if you are huge and wealthy and can hire a nanny for every half day. It's still your cake and the ad may know you're the one you're the one and you're responsible and you did everything wrong and you know that right. Once they're able to talk it's on you. It's so different for Tommy. Because she comes in. She didn't have this relationship with her daughter. Stayed back in with her dad and it was and you're doing this and and trying to find so here it is all these years later. My daughter has a daughter on on the show. And so we're what? Where can we start from you know? Do we try to go backwards and repair? Can we start from where we are? I mean it's all the questions that I guess one would have in a in a situation like that or do I just walk away you know. Is this something that can't be fixed. You know again complicated. Yeah who wants to well? Maybe people do especially in this. You're dealing. This show is dealing with things that were living with every day and immigration. The first episode is there Sexual misconduct right is right. There in fact it was. Tommy that had problem right war and then in the last episode that I'd seen it was about a Hollywood producer. Rice was happening. So do you have input into this. What's going into these scripts? You know what I could I it's been made very clear to me that I have as much input as I want. But I'm so busy doing the stuff that I do. That and we have a stable full of writers that are so creative and interesting and interested and talented suddenly. We're all sitting. I just referred to them as livestock. I'm not sure I didn't mean it like you. The whole group lovely normally humans sitting in a room didn't the story and you look at it and do you go into the stable and say the hell is death if they took this. I look at it if I look at with. Yeah you'd never do that either so you can do it. We have to give me that. I haven't done someplace somewhere you know is is the prison warden. Carmelo is like basically running that house too bad for Tony that any of that happening. I let him maybe total mass but what she's in the hospital we don't think of her diction we think she knows what she's doing as messed up she is. What is it about you that everybody thinks he is take charge? She knows what you do it. Every minute of the hold the will of all the is so what not. You're not how do you deal with all the characters that you've played before when the public when they see you is going to remember one or the other of them vividly? The amazing thing I've discovered at this point in my life is I can't control anything that happens with anyone else so if they are coming at me with a memory of some other character I played. I hope they will let go quickly or they won't be able to Follow the new story that we're all telling you know It is a huge honor to think people look at me and think. Oh I watched that show that you were on whatever but being an actor you change all the time who you're playing in what part of the story you are participating in and You know so I hope people are able to let it go and and look at look at the new stuff. Where do they go in your head? Do they live with you? I'm sure they do you wake up some days and there's a lot of now that they're long gone so you don't need any therapy then it's okay that's a whole other. How much time we got about the role. No no no. No no no. That's also twenty years ago. We started it twenty years ago. Sopranos And then Jackie was whatever I don't however many years ago that was time passes in wants to Kinda I take off the nails and the jewelry and all that stuff she goes away. You didn't save inning of her. Wardrobe tying the wardrobe. No I was. I was happy to move past that. I kept a couple of things from the house and I didn't keep her fingernails wardrobe. Something you'd be in the mood for US.

Oscars 2020 Preview

"HI everybody. It's Peter Travers. Here here with this special edition of Popcorn which we're calling the Oscar popcorn because this weekend on February ninth exactly everybody will be watching. Being the Oscar telecast on ABC and probably having their own little ballot. Like I have here trying to figure out who's going to win this damn thing and if the person I don't like winds pushed I put my money on. That's what really happens. That's what people ask me on the street. So I'm GonNa take you through these main categories and and we'll see what will win what should win and we can argue. You can find me somewhere and we can argue about it. But I'm going to start with with best supporting actress. Because that's how the Academy Awards those that's always the first award that we say Kathy Bates in Richard Jewel. Laura dern in marriage in story Scarlett Johansson in Joe Rabbit Florence Pew in Little Women and Margot Robbie in bombshell so look. There's it's a lot of good people here and I have to say right at the outset. That Scarlett Johansson is one of those rare actors that has a nomination as best actress. Chris and best supporting actress marriage story for Best Actress in here supporting which usually gets you to win one and that usually that it's usually that one but it's it's not going to happen you know I'm sitting here saying did I read wrong. What happened to Jennifer Lopez and hustlers? Hasn't she been in this game since the release Lisa Hustler she has and yet the academy you bad people have decided that J.. Lo just wasn't Oscar material while you're wrong but look we we have to deal with rats here and I'm going to say that the person who will win in this category is also the person who should win. And that is Laura Burn and Laura dern in marriage story plays a divorce lawyer and she's a tough one and let's think of all the Hollywood people that are voting for this award and how every single one of them I'll wager. A BET has their own divorce lawyer and has been through this process. Maybe more than once. Maybe two we're three times to do it. And they find Laura Dern Dunn's in this movie something spectacular it's also one of the few awards. I think that marriage story story is going to win. But Laura Dern has never won an Oscar. This will be her first time. Everyone loves her. We all love and big little lies and I think this is her time on so let her have it all right. I'm moving onto best supporting actor. Tom Hanks in a beautiful day in the neighborhood. Anthony Hopkins in the two popes Al Al Pacino in the Irishman Joe Pesci in the Irishman and Brad Pitt in once upon a time in Hollywood. Look you're talking to a big Irishman fan here so if it was me saying come up for the gold it would be Joe. Patchy I know Joe Pesci doesn't do any publicity. He basically sticks fix to himself. He's probably tough guy in real life as the gangster that he plays in the Irishman but that performance is amazing and won won his first Oscar for another score says he movie goodfellas where he was the most scary gangster. You can see here. He's kind of quiet dawn. So if I'm I'm giving them it would be Joe Patchy but the academy is giving this award and no one. No one can win. This except Brad Pitt. These other people here Tom Hanks Anthony Hopkins Al Pacino and Peci all have won Oscars so they already have the gold. Do you realize his full career. Brad Brad Pitt has never won an academy award game over people. This is it Brad. You're going to get in once upon a time in Hollywood playing a stuntman. It man playing somebody who's been around the business. I think it's irresistible for Hollywood to say I'm going to reject one of my own. Plus he was great in the movie. You seem to hear my voice that I have a little bit of a problem. Yeah I do. Because that's not a supporting performance at all that his part is the equal who of his Co Star Leonardo DiCaprio's WHO's nominated for best actor. So why is he in that category. I think they want to win. And Brad you might as well prepare repair your speech right now okay. I am now moving onto best actress. Cynthia Haribo in Harriet Scarlett Johansson in marriage story. Sir Sharon in little women. Charlie's Sharon in bombshell and Renee Zellweger in Judy. What Best S. actress award so far from the Golden Globes to the critics choice awards has it Renee Zellweger one? She's won all of them. So is there any possibility ability here for something else. I mean. Look what Charlie. Stern did in bombshell. She not only plays Megan Kelly. The makeup geniuses have made her look exactly exactly like her and Charlie's has talked exactly like are they love bio pics there so she should be really strong. Social Ronin is like twenty five years old. She's he's on her fourth Oscar nomination. This is incredible and Scarlett Johansson. Like I said nominated for best. Supporting actress and Best Actress. Cynthia revolt is playing Harry Tubman and she also wrote the song from the movie which is nominated. That happened to somebody last year. Didn't it yes it was lady. Eating Gaga Lady Gaga was nominated for writing that wonderful song from stars born and his best actress. But what did you win. She won best song and that was it so I have to say that again. I would give this award person late to search for Ronin just because I think to be that young and to be that consistently brilliant is amazing and her performance in little women. Is that good. But it's Rene as I talk about. How Hollywood would love bio-pics this is? Judy Garland that she's playing judy. This is one of their own. Did they ever give. Judy Garland her own Oscar Competitive Competitive Acting Oscar. Never and I think for that reason not only will renee Zellweger win best actress but she will win for Oscar. Judy Garland on never had. It's their way of saying Judy. We love you. We were so stupid not to give it to you. And we're going to give it to Rene in honor of you. This is how Hollywood works. It's really crazy. But if you're betting on this you have to bet crazy. Aright best actor Antonio Banderas in pain and gory. Leonardo di Caprio in once upon a time in Hollywood Adam driver in marriage story what came Phoenix and joker and Jonathan Pryce in the two popes. I look at this category and before I get into. Who Will Win and who should win? I've I've got to say academy what you have against Comedians. And what do you have against Eddie Murphy. That he's not nominated for Dole. Might as my name what you have against Adam Sandler who proved his dramatic chops in uncut gems. Like nobody can believe and yet they have it they only like to give Oscars to actors serious actors who played comic roles. Ause they hate anybody who's making a living as a comic to actually win this war so this year's been going along I've had this feeling that this was Adam drivers to lose that performance in marriage story is one of the best things he's ever done or that I've seen this year and yet there's this other guy and who's that other guy he's Joaquin Phoenix plane joker. Sometimes there's that kind of performance sometimes. There's there's one that just so dominates the screen. That is such an act of immersion of from an actor in a raw. Yeah Joaquin was scary. He was sometimes funny. He was always touching even though he's playing somebody who's totally out of his mind and a lot of this movie his in his mind. What Cain has been nominated several times before and never one Joaquin? This is yours. I can't believe any set of circumstances. Stances if you WANNA bet the whole house on something and somebody to win it's going to be Joaquin Phoenix as best actor for joker game over all right. We're ready now to move on. I'm going to best director now. This is one of the most exciting categories because these people will these particular men and save and because Hollywood as wont of decided that even though there were more women directing movies than ever before four last year. They couldn't find any to nominate which is of course absurd because Greta Gerwig directed little women which is nominated as best picture and they. I thought no I'm just GONNA do five men like we always do what happened. You people sort of learned a couple of years ago when you nominated Greta. GERWIG quick for Ladybird didn't give it to her. But you nominated her. The KADEMI is ninety two years old. Now how many women has given an academy award for directing one. And that's Kathryn Bigelow for hurt locker. Ninety two years one award hang your head in shame name anyway not knocking any of these men that did get nominated. But there's one in there that I would sacrifice for Greta Gerwig but you you try to guess who that is anyway. Here they are. Martin Scorsese the Irishman Todd Phillips. For Joker Sam Mendes for nine thousand nine hundred Seventeen Quentin Tarantino eighteen. O for once upon a time in Hollywood and Bung June hope for parasite every one of these guys you can make a case for. Martin Scorsese Z.. To me is a master the grandmaster who only has one Oscar for directing and then the Irishman is doing some of his best work. Ever Quentin Tarantino. Not No with once upon a time in Hollywood is also a peak form and yet I'm saying this category is going to between two other the directors one of them being the South Korean Vong June Hall for parasite a Foreign Language Film. That seems to have got everybody excited about what's possible and then Sam Mendes for nine hundred seventeen a world war one movie that is constructed to look like it was done in in one continuous. Take how do you resist that. You don't even though I think they would really like to give their best director award worked. Bon John. How it's going to be for Sam Mendes for creating a war movie like no war movie we've ever seen before so sam I think think it's yours but if you're getting out there and you WanNa go to Bung Jun Ho? You know you might do it because there's always a surprise in these contests we can't go. Oh by what the odds are we have to go by sometimes the academy saying I have an instinct for this. I have a feeling this is the right way to go all right last category. Are we ready best picture of the year Ford versus Ferrari the Irishman Joe. Joe Rabbit Joker her little women marriage story nineteen seventeen once upon a time in Hollywood and parasite here is is the one you know every year I do this. It's between one or two movies this year. I can't reduce anything to to the Irishman my estimation a classic one for the ages. Martin Scorsese. Ed Is Best Robert De Niro Pacino. Joe Patchy making a mob movie about old-age age about the end of a mobster. This is the punishment that they get for the lives they live. There's nobody in their lives there alone. It's a tragedy Quentin went and Tarintino. Once upon a time in Hollywood is writing about Hollywood in the sixties and about a time that he thought was the last creative burst of Hollywood Hollywood and doing that. Nineteen seventeen again the World War One movie shot to make it look like. It's one continue steak and parasite a movie about a Korean Rian family in which they exploited the people they work for and then are exploited by the people working for them it is a classic. These are four incredible classics. So what am I gonNA do. What am I going to tell you? What's out there that you have to say? This is the winner and I'm going to go with with all excuses. No excuses in fact to my love for the Irishman. But I think this is the year of Quentin Tarantino. I I think once upon a time in Hollywood being a love letter to Hollywood and being voted on by people who live and work in Hollywood Quentin Tarantino despite right brilliant work with pulp fiction inglorious bastards reservoir dogs Django unchained has never won a Best Picture Oscar or a best director Oscar. Never it's never happened. What better time than now? When he saying Hollywood I love you? I think it's time Hollywood to say to Quentin Tarantino. I love you back back. So you've got it watch the show and afterwards we'll have a discussion.

Hollywood Oscar Brad Brad Pitt Scarlett Johansson Quentin Tarantino Laura Dern Academy Awards Joe Pesci Director Renee Zellweger Joe Patchy Charlie Martin Scorsese Judy Garland Leonardo Dicaprio Tom Hanks Joaquin Phoenix Irishman Peter Travers

Diversity at the Oscars: The 2020 Race Isn’t Looking Any Better Than Last Time

"I feel like hell for the law and Michael to Michael for lying and get contraction I saw this French film of course later on so I was very excellent and might just make it to be honest it would not Maxis the prices for me you know at the very beginning of awards season three kicks off with three phone fast fan is Toronto in telluride at the end of the summer the beginning the full and then bounced off you start hearing people's reaction and this is the red slacks a waiting van and you're looking at pictures saying well they're all satin and a prominent films with African Americans the soon so would directed by women I didn't know if they were going to cross over the queue for that group of voters in a few years ago actually when when a post all the adults because so white we could get at round tables with the active the directors the writers and when we were putting together the actress round table there were absolutely no women of color who seems like they would even like to to get nominated and I remember and and we got pretty massively criticized rightly I take the blame for this to have an all white women's round table and and we changed direction after that but it was evident that the industry walking creating those films and I think it's easy to say if the cat in the for XP industry see both you and you have to tackle things in multiple directions I think the academy's has done a great deal to do that what we have is talking about this the other things the academy dot for instance mentorship program financing for education there are multiple patrols here that lead to this problem and she also looking at the ferry downstream and the cat in the wrong but you call take in isolation April Stephen has a great point we tend to look at the academy not that the academy shouldn't be accountable they should they're sort of the tip of the iceberg in many many ways what's your view of the academy that you focus so much attention on verses the industry I absolutely agree with Steve and that it's not just the economy it's not just the golden globes is not just a Baptist we need to go all the way back to the very beginning to the screenwriter stage and figure out again whose stories are being told and who is telling those stories when someone is sitting down with a blank page and findings front of them hoping that they have written about to write the next best picture you know what is the protagonist look like is it a tall leggy blonde from the Midwest because if so by the time we get the casting months the maybe years later then the only person you're thinking about is Scarlett Johannson or Jennifer Lawrence but then one has to ask what is their hair color have to do with how well they perform in that film right because that means then then Daya and Gina Rodriguez and other people won't even get an opportunity to audition just because of what's that in the mind set I absolutely agree that the economy is the very end of the line so we really need to start back at the beginning and find out what opportunities are being given to traditionally under represented communities not just with respect to race but also sexual orientation gender identity disability to get those films made from the very beginning and at the same time April you have written about the types of roles that black actors and actresses do get nominated for once they are cast once they are in that pipeline you wrote a piece in variety you talk about how the only black woman to be nominated for Best Actress was Cynthia Revo who plays Harriet Tubman in the film Harriet similarly Lupita nyong'o won an Oscar for her role in twelve years a slave but this year she was overlooked for the to care after she played in Jordan peels hit movie us talk about what you see is the pattern for how black actors and actresses get promoted and celebrated when they are in films it's a real problem and I think that Stephen touched on this a bit you know that that in their minds that even when they were sending up those round tables they didn't think that those you know particular performances were even going to cross over for women of color and so they were included in the panel and one must ask what kind of troops palatable to the economy to voters to film critics because the vast majority of winners especially for women of color and black women in film have all come from a place where the characters are experiencing significant trauma so inflamed women women living in abject poverty even Whoopi Goldberg who played the cookie skit side kick in ghosts and when the best supporting actress you know they were there were questions about whether she had mental health issues right the only black woman who's ever won for Best Actress is Halle berry in monster's ball and clearly she with the troubled character and so one has to say well are there only thing is that the economy fees you know that only a slave narrative that is palatable to again a majority white male voter membership and that's the movies that we see time and time again you know why is it that my pain the pain of my ancestors is entertaining for you that that is what you will award but when someone like Peter in young girl has to fully fleshed out characters in us she is snubbed for that role because we actually the very first of may off to be on the actress roundtable if you will be pizza it was a wonderful performance so it isn't shown true of actresses of color you know for the rack access to the email you'll you'll you'll call the mansion on college and terrific performance by Adam Sandler but is deceived official in the movie Sean movies don't tend to do well they lost to until movie was was one of the very few exceptions and this applies just as much to active in that applies just as much the film that win the Oscar for Best Picture DOT flight in the whole history of the office you call he had any comment is that where you thought I called think of a single is shown a picture of that as well on the other hand Schindler's list winter so this isn't shocked a criterion for the place to women of color let's talk about some more films that could have been nominated that didn't get nominated we've already mentioned Stephen you mentioned hustlers one of many movies with a cast of mostly women directed by a woman they got zero nominations this year fair fail to to cross over is you say let's get people to hang on I want to I want to give people a little bit of a listen to hustlers here we go Wall Street guys it's in this country stole from everybody working people lost everything one of these things back to jail the game is rigged and it does not reward people who play by the rules like robbing a bank except get the keys hunter Harrison vulture some people have suggested that Jennifer Lopez campaigning for the nomination too much might have played into her not getting an Oscar nomination for her role in hustlers what what are your thoughts on this film and on the reason why J. lo was overlooked I mean how search has a very special place in my heart because it is based on and your magazine story but outside of that I just enjoyed it I think it has a lot of momentum it's a lot of fine and I mean my favorite teen hustlers as winter for Lawrence's teaching Constance Wu how to strip essentially and it's just such a loving scene between two women who were just you know being friends with one another but at the same time I think the thing with jail is that I think when you're voting for and someone when an Oscar part of the sort of metric is that you have to know that how much they wanted and away and that they need it and with Jello she's already like an icon she is such a form I mean we also heard the Superbowl last week and so I think it actually might have been the opposite that maybe she did and maybe that there's been that shouldn't wanted I'm not for need it to be to sort of solidify her status in Hollywood or or in the world really but it I was really surprised by Jill rocketing nomination because she had gotten a lot of the precursors and her biggest competition is obviously Laura Dern who is the favorite to win for playing a lawyer in marriage story but for a lot of the season especially after hosters career in Toronto they were pretty head like neck and neck but I think the jail thing is that did that character of like a mama bear stripper was not really you know super palatable to a lot of people she dealt drugs and you know sort of engaged or Shoup's worked as sort of a pen been engaged in sex work but at the same time like that's not really a role that we see women especially winning Oscars for I think I wanna push back in Stevens point earlier that that you know the problem about the roles women when the colors spit specifically play in movies is that extends to everyone I don't really think that's true anything Custer's is in some ways an example of that that this was sort of a prickly story about women who are doing bad things and getting caught doing them and that's just not a movie that people see as an Oscar movie I think that's everyone's detriment what we got this voice mail from a listener sharing his opinion about the role that race and gender should or shouldn't play when it comes to Oscar nominations we got several responses along this theme listen IBM injury Oscar is I don't mind or don't care who the with gender of the person is or what color the person is I care about quality in the movie that's being produced I don't care what color they are what gender they are I don't think it matters Linda tweeted this is it just possible that there were no good movies made by people of color or women this year when will the best just be the best without conditions attached Stephen you go first and then April what's your response okay I just briefly want to respond to sing about Jennifer Lopez I we saw she did get nominated the best supporting actress before it could be a thirty two fax one is that movie is very unsentimental about her role and it had a different ending in the retention people would have like that for the cliche narrative the very strength of the film is resistant to that meeting as you said less palatable the second thing is when conformist so let you see the acting when he seems so real that you think this is just what they like the performances of look she made it so real the people football if you'd just what she's like it's one of the reasons Tom Hanks has been so rarely nominate a you got nominated this year but not for many many years he makes it look so easy well certainly we're seeing the film let's let's put J.

BGN Predicts the 2020 Oscars

"Welcome to this episode of the Black Girl Nerds podcast. My name is Jamie and I'm your host. The Oscars are coming up. You guys coming up very soon and we're going to do something a little different in the past pass when we have done Oscar shows. We've done a breakdown of the Academy Awards this year. We're doing a predictions Shows so we're going to run this episode before Sunday night ceremony. And I'm excited to do this prediction show with myself. And I've got an Jelica and Ryan here are wonderful podcasters to give some predictions on Oscar night this Sunday Sunday ladies still all right yeah. Let's go ahead and break this down. So we'll we'll just start from the top right so Oscars twenty twenty best picture. We've got the nominees as Ford versus. Ferrari the Irishman Joe. Joe Rabbit Joker little women marriage story nineteen seventeen once upon a time in Hollywood and parasite now Before we discussed what we predict. I WanNa say what I believe will be the pick but I also want to add the film that I would not to win. Yeah so if you have a film that you want to win you can select that and then the one that you think will in fact when so for me the film that will win best picture are is going to be nineteen seventeen That is a film that has already won best picture by way of the Golden Globes. It won in best picture for the critics choice and it is the favourite right now amongst the Hollywood industry community so nineteen seventeen is the bet amongst everybody for best picture. I really do want parasite to win. I saw parasite I loved it. It is one of the greatest films of twenty nineteen. If you have not seen parasite for are those relisting please go see it. It is just brilliant I just love the metaphor of a socio economic onomic class and welfare and how they use those metaphors into suspense and psychological adjective thriller in this film. And it's just so brilliantly done and I'm not really one for like foreign films. I'm not really that kind kind of you know movie Fan. But parasite blew me away and it is by far one of the best films again of of Twenty nine thousand nine so I hope that people will and myself will be surprised. And that parasite will walk away with best picture but I think probably the likelihood of nineteen seventeen will be the one that will walk away with best picture which I got right. Yep I mean well I mean that's basically how nineteen seventeen. I saw that you know Golden Globes a lot of buzz about that one but yeah I think parasite will be a good look look for the Oscars. There probably won't do it but I think like seeing like the interviews with the cast and stuff like that. I think we'll be something different for them that I'm always pushing for Oscars but yeah. I'm pretty sure they probably going to nine hundred seventy. I agree with my two thousand eighteen at but I want joker to win best picture like how wins Wasco I Want I want joker to win. Best win has not released a superhero. One has a comic won the best picture ever

Jonathan Pryce, 'The Two Popes'

"There's a movie now that you can see a Netflix. It's called the two popes and it stars my guest today. Jonathan Pryce and Anthony Living Hopkins. Playing guess what the title characters doing doing it brilliantly. So Jonathan Welcome Creek Pope Francis there. You are the big news now. About Pope Francis is his encounter with this woman in the crap out there where he sort of slapped her hand. Yeah Yeah have you been being asked this question now would I please slap really. Okay do I WANNA be grant. At the Golden Globes. There was a lot of Grabbing and pushing polling I was tempted to slap but I feel really sorry for him because people aren't seeing the whole whole sequence video where that particular woman grabbed him very yanked him yanked him and he's He's an Obama scientists bound to hurt. Well let's talk about the two popes in terms of the whole concept of you being offered this to play the The Argentinian Paul. Because we don't see him in the movie being the pope really walk up to that while Anthony Hopkins is playing Pope Benedict German. is you're an Argentinian to Welshman playing these. Yeah somebody must've said. That's that's what we need is to Welshman to do this time for Welsh. Pope was watching and watching. You play this. I kept thinking this other. Argentinian you play. which was one there? You are the dictator in a way. Pope can be a dictator but Pope Francis Go. You is the liberal reform. The one that wants to give them more compassionate look at the church. Did you have any trepidation about pilots. Just just just the usual about whether I wanted to do any of. Is that how you approach them. All Walk Negative. Say No no I thought uh I thought I'd be on a hiding to nothing representing this particular pope. But that didn't last very long. I read the script and won ten. You that Fernando Morella Morella was gonNA be directing it. I definitely wanted to do it and I think it was mainly to do with the fact that I'm not religious logistics. I was brought up in the Christian faith. I went to church until I was a teenager. but I found that this pope was the first pope who I thought was speaking to me and millions like me about issues that what. Mrs Narrowly to do the Church or organized religion but to do with politics and to do with speaking out up folding environment and about the economy about the injustice is the during the world so I he was someone for great empathy towards towards and help. That looked like him a bit and I walk like came definitely Even though you've got ten years on me you could sneak into the the Vatican may be busy and just an take over there and do what you would need to do there. Does that give you a feeling when your plane that that this was what I would do if I win. The pope shoes. I wouldn't be so presumptious to fix that but I'm glad he's doing what he's doing And obviously he's got. There's the whole church and Vatican side of things which he doesn't seem to be able to deal with those conquer but when you're constantly reading lots of stories about how he's disliked within the Vatican because he's a reformer and people don't want that change and I think that's that's why he became pope. He was be made pope in order to make these changes. Otherwise so why choose him because he was in the never been an odd uh-huh latin-american Pope and the film implies of that we don't necessarily know the truth. That benedict wanted Bagogwe uglier to be the next pope because he saw in him things that he could not even he couldn't do he saw in many ways his opposite didn't they and this is it. I didn't mention this in the introduction but benedict was a pope who retired. WHO said I'm not going to do it anymore? And so we have to popes who Are Alive in this world today and they're the clips at the end of the real popes in seeming tab. Having a really terrific time when I sold the first Kata film I was bit disturbed. They were showing the real popes at the end of the phone. Because I thought it would invalidate everything. We've been doing for the previous to house. But what you see in these two men is a is a the committee this just a welcoming the way they they greet each other with great affection and you can see the respect. They have for each other and far from taking away from our performances it they it enhances. It gives an element of truth to what we were doing. It's a really terrific script. Ns Two popes one of these two guys talking to each other which sometimes scares people when they go to the movies. I want that but yet a mirage as a director makes this movie move. You've so beautiful to gorgeous thing to look at. It's also sometimes. Polaris that's going on. Did you all know that that was what was going to happen before he did it. No no what's what's wonderful about. The film is that it It's such a surprise for audiences once don't you don't you. You gotta get them in there and then once they're in that It's a surprise Because it's it's much funnier than I ever expected. And and the audience expect and I think the way we made the film there was no. We didn't have many preconceptions. I don't remember ever talking onto Tony. I'm going to be like this. And he said I'm going to be like this and finance and I want you to do this. That and the whole process was really organic bound because we have the the strength of that script bit underneath his you know holding us up and when I saw it and the way Fernando put it together other because he says his work starts in the editing room he lets us do what we want and encourages us to go certain ways but when I they do what they want to that yeah good directors do that they let you think your your your coming up with the Serving quietly feed and things in your ear they let you think it's your idea So when I saw it I didn't know it was going to be so funny. Rondo humorous. I mean that first scene of your character trying to book his own plane reservations on the fault. Yeah probably apparently did that. That's what he did but it's the post game I saw with a big audience was telluride. And because you I don't know what to expect and that moment the right at the beginning of the phone web the audience laughs as one. The huge wave of laughter. You can feel the audiences sir. I sent me sat by a few. And they're going to enjoy this and the you can feel the audience sitting back and saying this. This is going to be okay you can. It's like Yep okay you know bring it on make happen and yet it also doesn't avoid the controversies that exist within the church. Now the whole thing with the problem priests they're predators that are there and also their histories. Can you talk a little about his history. Go Yeah it back in the seventies in terms of Argentina. It's all mostly. It's all in the film and we didn't shy away from it. The way were applauded and thanked thanked by the people people in Bonus Iris. When they sold the film we had a screening because they that fear was this is going to be a whitewash elma? Crossover Haggi Auger fear Goglia. Because he is still seen as a divisive character in Argentina because of his perceived involvement involvement with the cardinals. I've found on Youtube footage of him being interrogated by or question by his peers fellow cardinals about his involvement with the colonels. And you see a very different man the man you see smiling on the balcony. And he's made pope he's he's he's very doer he's quite angry. I think he's impatient. He's drumming his fingers on the table. And I put that image together with talking to a Jesuit priest and bonus. Who worked with him? I who said they didn't like him. He was Very always stays. Ah Stay by himself. He didn't mix I he was he never smiled. I'm when they saw him on the balcony. This smiling pope. They didn't recognize him because he was smiling. Didn't person yeah. But then you do get the other side of him where he is in the film you see him Saying mass and the kind of the slum township areas and and the other side's members very popular so it's not a a a bio-pic it's not a huggy overview of this man. It's a it's a Watson Study of him and I think we've been fair to him because we all respect him and admire him And we had a screening in Rome three or four weeks ago were members of the Vatican Cambridge theory and They said they liked liked. That enjoyed it And a particular Cardinal WHO's a friend? WHO's a friend of Love Benedict and of Francis He'd liked the phone very much. Fernando the director said. Do you think we were too hard on the church. And he said you went hot enough woo but he also said that he thought France would like the film and he wanted the DVD to take them to show him the film. I love so That review see that. Yeah well what do starts right. Yeah that'd be good and also from France's family in Argentina. Fernando got an email to say that they'd seen it. They enjoyed the film and they liked. What we've done Representing their uncle. That was that was really nice. Colon uncle Uncle Horace to two years. How were you and Anthony Hopkins together? You know. You haven't made anything or done anything before. Really WE'VE BEEN ON A. We're both on the recording of under milk. Wood the Dylan Thomas Poem that was produced by George Martin. Twenty seven years ago the Beatles producer and Tony was first voice. I was second voice and you come twenty seven years later. We're in Rome and the coal sheet has You know you're rated as the importance in the film. The number and I was number one and Tony was number two so it was my revenge after twenty seven audit your greet each other even morning with morning number one number two. It went on from there but we. It's interesting the what happens to the two men in the film is reflected. Did what happened to Tony. And I because you know in the film you see two men sort of sniffing around each other like a pair of dogs like where each other Eh Wary of Tony but I was. I was I I'm an aura of Tony Hopkins. I'm a great admirer of his. So I'm not played late into those early scenes and as you see the pope's relationship growing so my friendship with Tony grew and It is the equivalent of both of us. All of US tangoing together by the end of it. That's a good way to put out.

"One of the best all time theme songs. Billy Joel Song You know I love Billy Joel. But I'll tell you something. He had a certain valleys in his life. I think he tried to commit suicide. He was just getting in a lot of car accidents while he was having some struggles. So I'm I'm sure they hit about like. Hey how about we pay you X.. Amount of dollars and let us use the song. I don't know if this was a valley time though. This was our childhood. I used to watch with my dad. Who knows but regardless they got the billy Joel Song? I used to watch that. So he's just been in our life so long and then of course I love actors. who like he did Philadelphia Philadelphia? which again similar to what I was just talking about with Ellen Degeneres? That movie changed People's minds and lives about AIDS. And he you you know brought attention to the humanity and you know the family aspect to end the you know we just. It gave us a different viewpoint And he won an academy award for that and then the following year one another academy award for Forrest Gump was one for two for two was so Philadelphia came person then go and then the next year here he got nominated for Apollo Thirteen. Oh my gosh. And but he obviously didn't win but todd and I love that movie two weeks to have that on we had that vhs tapes play it all the time. It's what every every known again a movie. We'll just you'll come across a movie. That is easy to watch like a few of the ones in your rotation right now are spotlight which is weird. Because it's about a pretty serious thing but it doesn't. It's more about the journalism it doesn't it's not super heavy Yeah there's movies that you just continue to watch because they're predictable but they also also feel like a comfort with them So I was very happy to see Tom. Hanks up there. I'm so sad. He had a cold I kept thinking about. He nailed it. He totally he capture captivates room. He even though I usually if somebody is colder. They're just not on their best game. You're kind of feel nervous like everybody was dead. So maybe because he was Tom Hanks but I'm like God he just knows how to grab a room well and also him starting out by talking about his family and getting all choked up like that just sets where you'll listen anything else to say from then on and I also think that he has earned. He hasn't earned respect because he got awards. He's earned respect because he's a good person and I think that everybody in that room likes him they eat some people may like it more than others but I just think that he and what he has to say about professionalism about showing up you know the clip yard he played. We tend to forget these really basic things and I I. Sometimes I've never been an actress actress. Nor have I been a part of the world of Hollywood or theater but I'm willing to bet there's a lot of people who do get a little big for themselves themselves and don't feel that they need to show up on time and they always do instagram. WORRY PUTS A he. He takes pictures of Ram shoes or socks things that he finds that that are like left on the ground early signs at Hank's Ha Annex. Pretty Hillary I know he's funny so I just think we can all take like he's just. It's is not surprising to me that he played Mr Rogers this year. Because he's Tom Hanks he's different than Mr Rogers but they share a supplementary energy so oh there was another movie would bring up Mr Mr Rogers. We saw that. We saw that beautiful day in the neighborhood. Tom Hanks's obviously nominated. He was beat by Brad Pitt last night so another thing. That was really awesome. Last night I was Ellen Degeneres won the very first Carol Burnett Award which is for Comedians. Who have made an impact on society and and Kate McKinnon and so basically? They just started this award last year so obviously Carol Burnett got it last year. This year was the first year for someone else to get it so ellen into generous received it Kate McKinnon came out to introduce Ellen and to set it up and she really lovely job a sense sense of self I have. I have to explain that one more in in one thousand nine hundred seven when Ellen Sitcom was at the height of its popularity. I was in my mother's basement lifting weights. It's in front of the mirror and thinking am I gay and I was and that's a very scary thing to suddenly know how about yourself. It's sort of like doing twenty three and me and discovering that you have alien DNA and the only thing that made it less scary with seeing being Allen on TV. She risks her entire life and her entire career in order to tell the truth and she suffered greatly for it of course attitudes change inge but only because brave people like ellen jump into the fire to make them change and if I hadn't seen her on TV I would've thought I could never be on TV. They don't let Lgbtq people on TV and more than that. I would have gone on thinking that I was an alien and that I maybe didn't even have a right to be here. So thank you ellen. Forgiving me that was one of my favorite things. That speech was so beautiful and was was I thought it was a perfect person to give that to ellen for a multitude of reasons Her life experience her comedy like they just And obviously their friendship unshipped and speaking of Kate McKinnon is in bombshell which we just saw great and she was great like I love her and everything. SNL Even loved her ghostbusters. I loved it I you know. I just think she's great and everything but she was really. She was like in bombshell she. There was a little more drama incorporated. And she's really good so so I thought that was very moving and Ellen came up and I heard his long too. I did you NAPA. That's okay we can put a link to it or she did some really funny you know just just the montage of we were all very removed. She says she's such a funny actress. Well they started within one of our favorite clips of hers from her most recent comedy special. which is when you try on shoes and when you start doing things in a minute do shoes so funny I was laughing so hard so it just right off the bat and her she's just been around a really long time and end As Kate said you know all of you know this who are listening we went through really dark time and to now be doing the ellen degeneres show for seventeen in years. I mean unbelievable and you think of her always scaring people on you know the people and certain people get like not just startled but upset mad but she keeps doing it right and I know. But here's the deal. I used to Uh Honk the horn whenever picking up my daughters friends and one time I got Mary Flanagan so bad that she collapsed right and she was truly upset set. It wasn't funny. You know you had to apologize. Vowed to never do it again or anybody else. I apologize to everybody but maybe because she's ellen because I remember like Taylor Swift left. I just saw a montage of 'cause she always scares Taylor swift and she. There's nothing funny about Taylor's reaction. She's angry oh now I'm telling you I'm telling you and maybe fifteen seconds later. She's fine but in that moment there's nothing funny but Ellen continues to do it and I think it's interesting that she keeps doing it. Well I think that this is what I'm willing to bet. Okay so people go on her show and they know that it might happen so if you are somebody who's like I have a heart condition or my anxiety can't handle it. You would let them know they're not going to hurt you but every year like they do. This haunted house thing Andy does. WHO's their suicide kick? Yeah and she forces him to go through haunted houses and he hates the very scary. The ones that we went by Disneyworld stranger things with all the really scary ones. And he doesn't like it. But it's good humor and if view so boundaries right. I'm sure there's some people but there's some people who have really funny reactions One of the people. They is speaking of Sarah Paulson. She she I guess Jaycee said she always has a really extreme reaction but she. I'm sure if like after a timer to if she was like this is really causing a problem album. Ellen would respect that but they're all in show business. Yeah anyways we can move on. I just thought it was interesting. Okay so that was that award Lord and then one of the people who won that I didn't mention For Fossey Verdon was Michelle Williams and unfortunately and I think it was because because the show was winding down we fast forwarded through some of her speech getting late and he's got to go to bed she had a really beautiful speech therapy. Yeah factor moment moment by moment seen by same day by day pitcher also acknowledging the choices they make as a person the education they pursued the training they sought the hours they put in. I'm grateful for the acknowledgement of the choices. I've made and I'm also grateful to have lived at a moment in our society where choice exists because as women and girls things can happen to our bodies that are not our choice. I've tried my very best to live a life of my own. Making not just a the series of events that happened to me but one that I could stand back and look at an recognize my handwriting all over sometimes messy and scrawling sometimes careful dylan precise but one that I had carved with my own hand and I wouldn't have been able to do this without employing a woman's right to choose. Tiffany haddish those shoes news when to have children and with whom when I felt supported and able to balance our lives knowing as all mothers note that the scales must and will tip towards our children. Now I know my choices might look different than yours but thank God or whoever you pray to that. We live in a country founded on the principle that I am free to live by my faith and you are free to live by yours so women eighteen to one hundred.

"And recognize my handwriting. All over sometimes Michigan Scrawling sometimes careful and precise but one that I had had carved with my own hand and I wouldn't have been able to do this without employing a woman's right to choose. Yeah it almost felt like there was a bit of counter programming against the apathy of the hosts to who had who had specifically scolded people so in advance about giving political speeches and I think people kind of took that as an opportunity to stick their thumb and it was a different globes to me right. The Globe says in the past. It's been kind of the tipsy Oscar. The kind of the Sillier funnier drunker. This did not feel like that to me. This felt with a couple of exceptions. Tiffany OUGHTA shoot you. Heard in the intro when the award for Chernobyl was announced saying Noble as perhaps no one ever had kind of a you get at a car you get but other than that. It didn't feel that way. What you're what you're indicating? There's a lack of energy which was again the apathy apathy of the host leaches into the preceding when something like When Kate McKinnon comes out to do our introduction to Ellen Degeneres and she's just kind of striking out with this great forceful do a arm swinging dry? Then you're like okay. Somebody's here to have fun. Yeah so who do you think. The chances have increased decreased. have a I mean again. We've we've talked about many times but the globe does its own thing but I do get the sense. That Brad Pitt's chances went on following this because there's a lot of momentum at the back of once upon a time in Hollywood in general I I think Laura dern chances went up she for supporting actress For Marriage Story I think J.LO's chances I don't know I don't know what to make of J. Chances. That was kind of a weird. Let's not forget Jaylo nominated for Hustler's didn't win lost to Laura Dern I admire both of those performances in very different very different ways I mean you definitely definitely had some foregone conclusions that were cemented I th. I was very happy to see parasite win for foreign language film. I really liked that Renee Zellweger performance in Judy that won for best best actress in a drama. I will talk more about that. I think closer to to Oscar season. As far as WHO's chances went up or down. I don't see a lot of momentum. Some for the Irishman with the way with no wins you don't see a lot of momentum for the two popes shut out dolemite is my name got shut out. I think nine hundred seventeen in winning best drama gives that movie a certain amount of momentum going into the announcement of Oscar nominations. That's opening wide on Friday. Yeah I think you know one of the things I would normally say. Hey the Globes have nothing to do with the Oscars but you know somebody did point out this week. The Oscar voting period is only like a week long this year. And we're right in the middle of it and it's not that. It's exactly a predictor. But you know maybe you hear about something and it causes you to at least get out and say before a vote. I should see this so maybe you know or if you were thinking well. That's not a plausible winner. That's you know this one's a foregone conclusion maybe this changes your mind and maybe it does affect back to your your vote Anything else you WANNA say before we go justice for forty justice for fair enough. Well that brings us to the end of our show. We want to know what you thought about. The Golden Globe boards find us on facebook at facebook dot com slash PCH or tweet us at PCH. "Down with Greta. Gerwig to talk about her new film little women on the big picture and Adam Sandler and Kevin Garnett appeared on the Bill Simmons. PODCAST talk about the newest film. Uncut gems happy new year from the ringer. I'm Shawn Fantasy. This is the big picture a conversation show about the seventy seven. Th annual golden in global wards. Amanda here we are once more. We think we know what we're talking about. Enter these things with great confidence even knowing that the Golden Globe boards are famous famously. wonky messy goofy silly stupid and they have shocked us once more. Nineteen eighteen seventeen has won best drama. which I don't think either one of US predicted we in fact you did not pick that I think we thought all four of the other contenders had a good story story? I I do want to say you and I washed together and you. I believe pitched picked joker on our podcast Dixie Irishman. And at one point you shared with me that your wife was going with marriage story and and we watched a two popes commercial and I was like well it could be two popes and you said you. We've now talked about the possibility party of four of the five winners which means it'll probably be nineteen seventeen now. Look you and I are very lucky to have these jobs. We are but I do not claim to know anything like. I'm just going to put this on the table here. I don't I don't know anything. I know people who knows stuff but I don't know anything and this is an example of having any confidence about doing any of this stuff. I thought a lot of Adam. Sandler's character from uncut gems. When that moment happening where I was like this is what must be like to be an awful gambler? I think I went like four for fourteen tonight. Some brutal number. I think you and I are luckily tied at four hundred fourteen. I just WanNa remind you that I very confidently set on the podcast. I I think I got four wrong. That's true and I thought that would have been impressive. It's only get four rowing and four wrong would have been absolutely extraordinary. You would have been going straight to the damn. Am Bank on forum is tough interesting. Telecast tonight I actually thought it was quite a dull show for most of it. There were some head-scratching picks. There were some entertaining speeches. Let's let's we'll get back to nineteen seventeen and all the races. We'll go through race by race but before we do that. Let's just talk. About the telecast itself Ricky Gervais returned earned as the host fifth time he brought a a unique energy the show this year an energy I would describe as fuck all. He really did not seem to care. Think he literally did describe it as that multiple times when he told the audience to go fuck themselves. He was mercilessly bleeped. Throughout out the night He really had the attitude of a person who would be happy to be anywhere else but at this award show I'll be honest. I know it's not cool to set kind kind of enjoyed it you did I. I kind of enjoyed it not because I thought he was funny or useful but just because it was different. I've never really seen that before. There was a train wreck vibe to it you. You kept cackling at like you. Would just he would say something and it would be silent and then and then you would react to the fact that nothing was happening but him just like melting down. I love the idea of people who work at network or a famous person in the audience watching just like quietly recoiling at everything happening onstage on stage. There's something kind of joker ask about that and I I thought your race was kind of like fake provocative. Most of the night and a lot of the jokes. We're kind of like ooh look at me but not actually with anything deep to say about anything which is a lot of his humor in the last five to ten years but he definitely succeeded in bringing just the sheer shear nihilism to the performance. Yeah and I thought that was the one thing that was a mistake. I don't really care about Ricky Gervais xl. I didn't think he was very funny but I wasn't offended ended. My main thought process there is monologue was like oh I really don't like comedy like I don't like the active comedy or anyone who thinks that they're a comedian. It's just like not for me so you know. Yeah that's that's how I spent my time tonight but bio for you by the way comedy. Not For me. It's really not just don't care. I don't think it's funny but I agree that the show is boring and it felt like purposeless a lot of the time and some of that you remarked as we were watching all the commercials for like whatever weird. NBC Plane Show. They were debut and it would say when it was airing on NBC would say like an streaming the next day and there were commercials for Peacock. Doc and Amazon and ethics and all of the platforms and it was just very clear that this is a network. TV like dying right in front of our eyes yes it was a stegosaurus. Soroush slowly falling to its dinosaur needs so hiring someone to stand up on stage and be like this doesn't matter on the one on hand it's true it really doesn't. It's very putting his finger on the truth of the thing but you know they're still trying to get people to watch the show for three hours in order to cover. The advertising is and and to save their network and it I just did. Your Vase just reminded me of like this. Like this is an outdated form like. This actually has no relevance it didn't make me feel feel bad about committing my time to it though for some reason maybe that's just a six drain of my personality. But I I never felt like well I do. Think the show at Townsville purposeless. I didn't think think that his like ruthlessly blase approach to everything. I I just I. I liked it. There was. It was not the same old like back patty glad handing and and also the same Tina fey and amy poehler ask like were above it but will also do the show Biz dance thing you know that. That was raised a characteristic of their three times hosting. I think all of which were pretty fantastic. I I love them as hosts but the tonality of their hosting was always like. Isn't this stupid but also I will perform for it. This was the first time I ever saw anybody in this job. Go like fuck it. I don't care yeah I guess that's interesting as a one one time thing. I don't think you can ever do it again. Right couldn't run it back. Yeah and he swore up and down that he would not be back. I just I understand that reaction. I spent the whole time being like I'm being reminded so many different ways that I have complete control over what I want to watch now and what I content I want to take in and I just. I really really don't need to be listening to ricky surveys right now. which is now because she was defending me or because he was spectacularly unfunny? I was like I don't need this it's a great point I wonder how what what percentage of humans who are watching television. I chose actively to just throw on a streaming service instead of watch this award. Show which is what they would have done. Yeah say fifteen years ago to fascinating thing anything else else to say about your vase. I mean he really just gave his monologue and then came out. And kinda deep side his way through a couple of introductions and that was really the whole show that is true I they will say that the only kind of provocation that I was like I'll give him credit for or the I will remember is every time he would just yell back at the audience. Yes.

"What they're gonNa do is season two and that's a good start well because it's weird because it's not it's not the first season you know what I mean so like if it were the first I season I'd be like yes. FLEABAG will win. phoebe Waller Bridge will win. But it's not it's over so they're not like maybe phoebe Rachel Brosnahan has won the last two years in a row. You know so it's true. Okay couple were supporting categories and other acting categories. TV remaining. Anyone really sticking out for you that you're rooting for or you think it's going to surprise us. Justice for Andrew Scott Hydros for Andrew Scott. I mean just disagreed with you about while bridge I'll say justice for Andrew got for sure who needed for an emmy? We should note and but dig it dominated here and I would love to see either merit weaver or Caitlyn Dave from unbelievable Win because once again an unbelievable it's incredible. I think a lot of people really slept on or Toni. Collette like any of those three women who were nominated for that show Really really good. If you haven't checked it out. What a fun watching insist that could be for you over the holidays but I think that could it could? It really could be like that this netflix project. That like people don't see coming at the Globes it could be. It could be unbelievable this year. Believe it or not okay. That does it for this week's episode. I will be back to record after the Golden Globes next week so Everyone get ready to see how these predictions sounds panned out for us In the meantime find Vanity Fair Dot Com and on twitter at little Goldman and on our own. "Thought it was just going up and up and up for driver and instead there's a bunch of roadblocks that I did not not see coming so does rise of skywalker going to be his nervous uh-huh Richard and I don't agree on this but I think driver is great in the rises skywalker. Richard just thinks he's not in like checked out of it and that's you know that that is an interpretation. I understand but I think he I kind of think that Red Skywalker is like one of those performances. where it's sort of like Romney Malik? Where you're like Bohemian rhapsody is bad romalis rallies pretty good in it or whatever? So that's that's it might. It might impact in that way. I don't know we're we're sitting here. The general public still hasn't seen star wars though. Who knows what's going to happen so a lot of times? We whoever wins the globe. It feels like it's the narrative but it does feel like like Adam driver and Joaquin Phoenix are still the top of the best actor category. And I I don't know that that will settle anything. Whoever wins like it will be interesting but it will still feel like a race to me? I think a toss her night. I like my Tokens Antonio Madera Star. Course there we've been would cheer for that so loudly early. He's been winning. He's been running critical words. You know. So He's wonderful ended and he really is a fun guy to be a room with which I'm not sure you would say about you know at least three other five people here not naming names naming names but but I mean yeah presumably. It's driver Phoenix face. Off Off as the Oscar will be It is interesting to not see Deniro here with with five drama things and obviously we talked about that when the nominations came out but just looking at it again. I'm Mike Man. No Deniro. Now we should talk about actor an economy because Eddie Murphy like I think has a chance to really show his position of strength here because it's basically in this category. It's him and Leonardo DiCaprio. I think the big heavy hitter potential Oscar nominees up against Craig Roman Griffin Davis and Josiah Rabbit and our beloved Taryn Edgerton. It feels like Eddie Murphy can pull this off. It does and yet I've just I have to say it's gotTa be tearing eight them. Musical like sometimes musical categories categories. They genuinely give it to a musical performance. So You know I agree your bloody right but I'm just GONNA put my heart out there and say Taryn uh-huh Dolemite has some music to it. You know I it's it's a very like performing kinda movies true he's And and I I feel like that is kind of the thing I always think about years ago. Colin Farrell won this award in comedy up comedy slash musical for in Bruges which is a great little movie and a Great Performance and Colin. Farrell's a great actor but you gotTa Watch what you say next. You really want to be very careful. One of my favorite movies vis-a-vis time like that because they split between comedy and drama. It's really nice. That a beloved actor. Ken Get a Golden Globe and give speeches John Stage during award season. And I feel like that's exactly the position Eddie. Murphy is in this year and it's like the back kind of role right where we'll go on Anthony. I was GonNa say I think that the the cynical side of they would love to be the place where Eddie Murphy makes a killer award speech and held to Academy Glory. That happened that the Globes that would be a great thing for the globe so I could see them wanting to Make that a possibility. So you guys don't think Eliana Caros as much of a threat is maybe I do. Oh No I think he is but I think he has less of a narrative than his Co star. Brad Pitt does I feel like people are like. Oh Leo's great but like You know we're we're. We're still kind of tired from the revenue so as if we see were swimming in the frozen river. Yeah Leo's obviously you're Taryn and we know this about you. Katie so again it all right Actress in a musical comedy musical drama. I keep Straw okay. The actress in drama. Who I think will win? I thought was nominated in a musical which is Renee Zellweger and Judy. which is weird? That she's in this category but Anyway she's is this going to be. where the rene domination like becomes a real thing I would assume so I mean that's kind of I mean since what like telluride we've been like? Oh yeah like that. That she's got that in the bag I since the photos were released but that movie movie has been pretty quiet ever since and I. I don't know I my my my hunch is that you know she'll she'll kind of return onto the scene With the Globes. It'll be kind of like her her reemergence into this conversation I don't see her having really serious competition from anyone else on the list. which I I feel like is probably the thing working? Best for her at the moment What about search Ronin? Well I feel like little women has been kind of this weird nonstarter starter. Thus far this award season in certain capacities and we just ran a story. I think that was from you. wrote it Anthony about about like not getting voters into see little women if I asked you to talk about his story who wrote it was a legitimate question. Do not Not a proposal. Like what about her. Do we think that she might because you know that story was about how male voters in a lot of the guilds didn't go go to see the movie and they're not sure they're watching screener so like do you think she would be like the next possible. I think I think Shirley's and I think not because I think you know we. We just talked about bombshell we've talked about are like whatever with Charlie's performance but remember. They gave Christian Bale The Globe for advice and so like maybe they're just like hey that disappearing act. What a what a show? Charlie's it is surely feels like such a gloves win here for it is a very buzzy performance and I think people are talking about it and I think that you know she is. I think the feeling is even for people who found the Makeup Cup and all that as distracting as I did like she still did an amazing job so I think she's in there. I also think Scarlett I almost feel like scarlet pays the price of of how dominant net flicks is and they're sort of Globes another globes desire. Let's face it to lake. Spread the wealth so that all the studios like by tables and stuff. They don't want they don't want warner brothers coming them being like seriously gave twelve awards to net flicks last night but I think scarlets performance is incredible but I seem seem to be living in denial bubble about the reception of Mayor Story which to me was not that bad so I mean I love marriage story I just I. Don't I think it was received well by the general public. I but maybe I'm too online. You're always right about that. My Do we want to talk about some of the comedy musical where this category is The maybe the wildest one of all right. This is the one where Kate Blanchett nominated for. Where'd you go Bernadette movie? Everyone forgot existed listed. I guess that gives Aquafina pretty good. Edge is the one person who's in a potential best picture nominee. I think she's going to be the one to be. I think that's a beautiful movie A great performance from her unexpected performance from from Aquafina and I think that's the kind of thing where we talked about them. Liking to break new talent. I don't count as new. I guess she's young and But but but it shows a new dimension to her at the very least and I could you see them really wanting to be. Wow you remember remember like twenty years from now remember when we We gave you that award and Boy that really changed things for you like they would love to be the landmark workplace where people looked at Aquafina is very serious and wonderful actress. Yeah and it's a way to recognize one of the more beloved movies of the year you know. At least at least by those who've seen Senate and elsewhere in the category I mean on the armistice is great and knives out. She has the benefit of that movie being a huge financial success. You know so. It's kind of in people's heads but I feel like the ensemble aspect of that movie is more. It's sort of visible strength than one at any one particular performance. Even though there are single oh performances nominated maybe even a little surprised that she's running an actress for supporting for that role. I mean I know that she is pretty has a principal kind of plot role but the issue I think. Just because of the ensemble. You don't think of her being unscreened the majority of the film necessarily yeah. They divide the supporting categories between Comedy and drama which I guess gives her her much better chance of getting in there. She'd been in supporting up against you. Know Margot Robbie et CETERA. Okay join them. We were talking before for about The power of an honorary award so Tom. Hanks is going to give a speech as a sesame mill award winner at the Golden Globes. Does that give him an edge of Brad Pitt. Here or is this Brad Pitt. All the way pit hit pit pit and I think it's going to be good. I'm really excited to see Brad Pitt. Went acting has. He wasn't not going to look up if you wanted to go. I mean he has an acting Oscar. He's been part of multiple best picture. Nominees teams like this incredible behind the scenes role. But he's such a huge which movie star it feels so overdue. I don't know am I going to get like emotionally affected by him. Winning a Golden Globe would and like and I love that he would get it for like I love that he would get it in the supporting category to be honest with you. Because Brad you know is this like impossibly galactically handsome human being who has always been more of a character actor than he is like a a leading man despite being so handsome. He's like fought against poor him too handsome. But like that's like that's been the pit narrative right is like what he really shines. He does those like Weirdo parts and like it's not like his time in Hollywood role is not like super weird. He's still like incredibly handsome and it but like it's kind of like a weird little character likes you know supporting character role. I would love for him to get the glove for this for sure. Why what? I'm curious about Hank's if either any when he picks up his lifetime stomach trophy or for this one. I think he'll win is will he take off his jacket and shoes while giving the speech and cardigans in like I think I just really just leaning into the sort of life like like Mister Rogers kind of sermonizing of at all. I'm excited for that brand new APP. Brad Pitt I would like Brad Pitt. First of all to bring the dog up to the but this is I think maybe the most obvious one where Brad Pitt can really start. Now if he hasn't already like approaching this as an audition for his Oscar speech like like it creates the Globes do function that way kind of like you know. Don't you want this this to happen on your stage. Show this act one and you'll get act. You know. The Final Act continued. Yeah so I think that. I think that's what you're some version. One of that Brad Pitt can live with and not hate himself for doing because obviously he's much cool to like campaign or do anything like that So it'll be interesting to see how he handles the tradition of of auditioning for your next award speech and remember at this award. Show unlike the Oscars Jennifer Aniston will be there as a nominee for the morning. Show so get ready for for the cameras to cut to her during his speech. I mean these two have been like circling around each other for so long since they broke up literally twenty years ago at this point maybe So I'm sure they'll be fine but I can't wait to see the cameras. We're an award show podcast but like one of weird things that I like to remember are like great presentations of awards and an old timer for me. Is Brad Pitt and Ryan Gosling Thousand Sixteen Globes like Brad Pitt. Awards presenter is like a barrel of monkeys he's really fun so talk meaningfully involved in this Golden Globes broadcast i. I have just like feeling like he has something to say. I don't know what it is though and I'm just very curious you know I feel like I just feel like there's something there's some unspoken narrative or something if he's just going to like Let fly if if he gets up on a stage This winter. Let's talk about supporting actress. Which might be the most foregone conclusion of this? "Are right around the corner and we're gathering together to throw out our Golden Globes CBS predictions. Because it's going to really sneak up on us after the holidays and which is exciting because we always love having an award show to dive right back into so we're going to go through the Golden Globes Nominees and make our best stabs at predictions as we always know. It's best not to pretend you know too much. Because the Golden Globes a particular can be really weird and surprising. But we're going to go through movies in television and try to predict what happens and hopefully we get some right. He does want to start at the top and go into best picture drama. Which I actually don't think I know who's going to win? Yeah I mean that's Like you said that this is a hard to predict a job. Because the age of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is made up of sort of a secretive group of you know of not that many foreign journalists but my gas is. They're going to say the Irishman because it check enough boxes. It's appealing to a wide enough kind of selection of people even though it again. That's a narrow voting body. I don't think the Netflix thing will be a problem. I I think we've kind of gotten past that at this point. So that would they don't. I don't think they have an issue. Outright flicks right. Yeah Yeah I mean. The problem for Netflix is the contingent of the the academy and some of the other guilds that is feels protective of the theatrical model. But I don't know that anyone in the Golden Globes voting thought he gives a damn about the American attractive of they're very protective getting movie stars on their TV broadcasts. Yes Y- yeah. I'm tempted to agree with Richard. Sure just because Like that Pesha Pacino roles a nominated screenplays nominate. You know like it's it's. It's well nominated Irishman so. I think that I acre I agree a bunch of wacky foreigners did give joker the golden line advance trust as wacky. Yeah Joker winning. The biggest. Everyone hold onto their hats. Surprise you guys can imagine. That's because marriage story upsetting would be interesting nine hundred seventeen. I can definitely see as a contender but all of these like maybe joker in two popes are the ones where we don't be like. Wait a second. We've been misreading this whole race to be baffling and joker would be kind of ominous a something. Yeah what's up because it's all going to come down. The Globes is the Han foreign press. They love their movie stars to be on their TV show and then they also Kim successful campaigning like campaigning. Really works on them is what I've noticed eh straight so. I do think that Netflix feels like It's got strongest chance here. I have a formula for gauging. My my own predictions for Golden Globes. But it's a little bit cynical I don't know. Do we like cynicism on this podcast. I feel that the Golden Globes are pretty much irrelevant at least as a as a voting body. It's eighty seven people who so some are legitimate journalists some have more dubious credentials. The show itself has a kind of wonky history But I think they derive their legitimacy intimacy from the appearance of legitimacy so if the films that they recognize go on to win Oscars people say well the Golden Globes H F. It's a bellwether for the Academy Awards. which is the one that filmmakers actress studios in the public in general really cares about so I think so? I mean to malign anybody but I think often I feel like the Golden Globes give their trophy to the film that they think is going to win in the Oscar or as likely to win the Oscar. So they're actually. The Golden Globes are the predictions for the Oscar. Yes yeah spotting so. That's kind of like so what I think if they they don't WanNa go they don't WanNa make the wild choice because they don't want people to come back and go. Oh yeah well they go they go choose crazy things like they're they're contrarians. RHAPSODY did win in this category last year. So you never know through the that Nathanael. I think. That's a good argument for Irishman because it's got such a prominent spot at the top of the race and also I think a good argument for what's time in Hollywood in the comedy category. which to me need that one seems like a much safer bet given on board for both of those? Yeah that's that's the one I think we'll win it and we've talked about this just the last thing about. Mary store like Mary Marriage story had landed differently. When it premiered on Netflix? Then we'd be having a different conversation but it landed in the midst of this very silly. I don't know I just feel like marriage story. You got on a lot of different sides by just the discourse in a way that even despite the discourse around the Irishman the Irishman didn't so yeah I could see those is that marriage story has become kind of a joke like I feel like whenever I see people talking about marriage story now they're kind of mocking it and the the intensity of the emotion or the melodrama of it and. I don't think that's a good that doesn't feel good in terms of its awards prospects especially think Status Conscious Golden Globe. Voters would look at it. No we don't WanNa vote for the movie that everybody's kind of making joking memes about. Yeah if I had been asked to predict which movie of the fall all would become the blake. Have a very hilarious Matach to it. It would not have been a no about about divorce. I think you're right that I mean at least from our sort of filtered perspective which is you know looking at twitter all day or whatever that that particular marriage to remain which is the four panels. You know them fighting with overlaid text La- it does kind of frame. The movie in a context that I don't think is really beneficial to I think you guys are two extremely online. I don't know when I've been having conversations and we're about marriage story admittedly I I'm dominating these conversations but it's just about how good it is so I don't know I feel like twitter is doing its twitter thing but I'm not sure that that's ask the conversation that's happening among award season insiders but maybe the FBI on twitter ruins things. I don't know I mean you guys are all season insider so so maybe I'm I'm probably just out of it but But yeah I I want to resist the notion. That twitter has ruined A marriage story. But I do think that Ed Murray story doesn't have the epic you know. Sweep of the Irishman and it doesn't have compelling of a kind of you know capping a series series and a career or several careers Of An argument the way. That Irishman has Irishman just has a ton of sort of is like a little bit of a freight train coming into this thing with a lot of weight behind it. That being said like the third thing that Hollywood foreign press is obsessed with is is is anointing new talent They love they love ushering in the new and planted their flag on that. And so I think just as the Irishman is like here is the end of not end of like closing of an era of a kind of you know actors and film making a ball Blah like Adam driver and Scarlett Johansson are like of the now generation like you know Oh right now if you're listening in January right now. We're in the midst of an driver. Fresh air controversy I suppose but like driver being anointed as like you know who's already worked with Scorsese who's been anointed as as new thing. I think that that is appealing link could be appealing to the gloves with that. Might be more relevant to discuss in the acting categories that in this category all right because my do comedy. Yeah I mean I think Katie. You're you're on the nose with with Hollywood I. I would be surprised to see JOE JOE or or knives out or Dolemite win. I mean rocket. Man You know like you know did win a best picture trophy at the Golden Globes last year. So so maybe that has has more legs than than than I think it. It does but if Joanna's bribes have gone through the F.. Jeff but I just I don't know I just can't see them not rewarding not only Clinton Tarantino movie not only a Brad Pitt and Leo DiCaprio movie but also a movie about Hollywood. It just feels like those three things combined makes it kind of a syllable. I'm with you on all those points. Hundred percent well then. Let's combine all of them into best director and figure out who we think is going to triumph here because as I go through our weekly predictions on our awards guide like basically feels like Scorsese and Tarantino are tackling back and forth as the best picture best director front runners. And I kind of almost feel like you could flip a coin on these two in this category. I I think it could go either way and You know sometimes when you have a coin flip situation where voters feel strongly about two individuals They look for a way to split the vote right or split it give recognize them for one thing or another thing and I think like if if if Tarantino doesn't get director I could see that going to scorsese and then screenplay going to Tarantino Yeah because that's where Tarantino tends to end up right like he's well Oscars for it like it's just kind of people like oh I mean. Of course he's amazing filmmaker but it's the writing or you know it's it's a safe place to put him. Um We're certainly score. Says he has more of a sort of great director from the You know the seventy golden age of cinema kind of aura about him while Turkey does making movies about that Eric Score says he was making that era. I don't know I have this weird feeling that because it's it wasn't able to be nominated in the best picture category that that some voters might be like you know we'll give it among Juninho here. It's an amazingly directed film. It is by some of the movie of the year. I thought that too. Yeah Yeah when you go. Galaxy Brain Sir thinking about Oscars and best picture the whole preferential ballot at the Oscars which we can get into later like. It's not really possible to slip boats because you know if one of them is in first place in the votes get allocated gated so the Irishman versus once upon a time in Hollywood like that won't factor in but in director at does so you could also imagine score says he and Tarantino splitting the amount of affection and bonking Ho kind of cruising losing to the top which has happened before I could also see San Mendez. Just coming in here with with that kind of slightly strange Win You know we'd we'd be that strange but I could see. I don't know blood also won last year. So if we're going by the same metric of like like parasites in this other category just like Roma was right right. Most people angry most people seem to consensus agree that it was maybe the best film of the year. Then then will you know will honor June in this category up here. So is there not cinematography because that would be maybe an eighty eighty young technical prizes. So maybe weirdly Sam Mendes could get you know the nineteen seventeen Oscar. Because there's no Oscar to give Roger Deakins and bugged me a golden glove. Oh and then Bongino gets the foreign when everybody gets gets a statue of very spread the wealth money it. Yeah I mean if if the nineteen eighteen seventeen surge is going to happen start happening. It's going to be there because running out of things for which would be interesting but I think I feel like if if we want if we can move on to actors Like I feel like that's where the Globes can get kinda weird. I guess it's usually in supporting Aaron Taylor Johnson winning for nocturnal animals or something. Thank my favorite. And even though the Globes are not all that useful as kind of clarifying metric I will be curious to see how the great it kind of best actor shuffle. That has been this season is sort of you know. Sort of sorted out by by this category. Because like you know it's it's been such a competition and even just get nominated because there have been so many huge performances in two thousand nineteen I fear Edge. Joaquin Phoenix Win for for some reason for some reason I'm thinking Antonio Banderas Harris has probably bear hugged all eighty seven members of the fit. Like I I was like I wonder if it's because I've just been thinking like oh it's driver. It's definitely driver but like like Mary getting MEEMA FIDE and then driver getting like vilified for this fresh air thing who knows how long this news cycle last. I Apologize College is once again. We're in the midst of it. Released Star Wars is also going to happen on the Globes Gasol night at my next point where the the rises guy workers is currently currently sitting with a nice fifty three percent rotten score on rotten tomatoes so I thought it was just going up and up and up for driver and instead there's a bunch of roadblocks that I did not not see coming so does rise of skywalker.

"Which again is traditionally hard to predict? And Hey the Kamensky made a big showing but Joanna you wrote first surprises roundup about Game of thrones it's last-gasp but the Globes didn't turn out so well no I mean and I think once again that's that's the Globes ever especially the TV arm arm of the Globes there Kong fascinated with the new And so they don't really do that whole like. Oh it's your final season. Let's really send you out with a bang. They're like what's what's what's coming up. What's friends and so yes? The thrones got a single solitary nomination for Kit Harrington which I think is bananas and that's not it really a knock on kit who I think did have his best season of the entire. Rental given thrones is just like of all the of all the performances. I wouldn't have put kit as the the top of my list of of who would get in their over like Peter Dig Ledge or any of the women But that being said the the actress categories are really stacked this year because we have a lot of female lead perceives dramas You know kicking around got morning show big little lies or Killing Eve like all this stuff is is is going on right now. And and so. There's no room for the Queens of West Coast. But Yeah Kit Harrington. Being the single thrones nominee. Is I think an interesting little story this morning and presumably he won't win. I haven't looked at the like he might get beaten by any number of people like Billy Porter Brian Cox. So he'll just kind of be there. Is this weird. A holdover from thrones. Yeah it's fascinating to me. And the and then Brian Cox getting so Brian Cox and Kieran Culkin or the to Performance nominated firm succession. The you know a new the kid on the block but a lot of people are really. You know irritated this morning. The Jeremy Strong isn't in the league and Jeremy Strong who's so tremendous tremendous on that show like I feel like nominating Brian Cox and Kieran Culkin. Both fantastic on the show is kind of a move. You make if you don't watch accession but you've noticed accession. Jason is a show that people care about. And you're like Oh yeah okay. Brian Cox in the coking kid. The Kid Cheryl nominate them. But like if you watch the show there's no way. Oh you don't nominate Jeremy Strong over those two so it's a it's a little league. That agree with that problem for me is. There's so many we you know but then I'm just like what about Schiff for about Tom. What about cousin graph? There's just too many good good performances on the show but But Kieran Culkin is. Maybe it's like you know not the most refined pleasure but the pleasure of every single second. He's Onscreen as extreme. Our Love Kieran Culkin and I love. Brian Cox tremendous. I'm not. I'm not like knocking them. Getting nominated. What Jeremy Strong does with a glance is ridiculous? So but you're right. I mean there's any number of people were like can can we just dominate the whole. They don't have an ensemble award word of the glows that I feel like they really should. Because that's like that's a that'd be very friendly thing to do and then follow that something that we can also look forward to the side awards. Yes having on Samba Award and also we should remember that the succession got at zero acting. Nominations at the emmys which was so infuriating. So at least we've made your mistakes. Yeah Oh and same with nominating Andrew. Scott for FLEABAG which comes as a relief for how instrumental he is to that show and he? He's in the supporting category television which they mash everybody together on the same way they do you in movies. So it's like. Yeah this movie's so it's just kind of hilarious lineup of like Andrew. Scott for fleabag Alan Arkin for the kaminsky method. Kieran Culkin Stellan skarsgard. I sure noble and Henry Winkler for Berry like how in the world you stack those performance. I have now is the TV show. That showed up that I think castle out to deal with like star power more than it does like critical acclaim. Is The politician Annette flakes. which is you know the big the big you now Ryan Murphy bed plot Gwyneth paltrow sort of thing? That just really came and went like Netflix. I spent as much on the politician as they did on season. Three three of the crown. I think that's the stat and it just made not a single impact really when it when it debuted But here it is at the Globes and that is a classic Globes move. I think for that show so I love seeing Livia Coleman for the crown she so good meet them Carter and Tobias Menzies they They went as hard for the crown as you would. Maybe I hope for. I love seeing Kirsten Dunst for becoming a gun central Florida. That is the show that really flew under the radar. She is tremendous on that show so she's not going to probably win against like Natasha. Leona phoebe Rachel Brosnahan but I'm really excited to see her in there so but she might because you never know how about. But they're minor that Mr Robots still on where Malik shows up for actor in a drama series. It's true he's like you know maybe from window in at the Globes but you mean rhapsody Z.. Then mister robot so you never know I think that might that might be enough for our Globes conversation as it keeps the sandwich also coming later this week. There's also a bunch of critics prize is is that we will have another episode this week so we'll have plenty of time to get into all of that so look forward to it. I'm any other final globes thoughts Do you want to leave for now. Yeah I do want to ask one final question if you had to sing one of the nominated songs at Karaoke. Would it be beautiful ghosts from cats. I'm GonNa love me again. Rocket man into the unknown from frozen do spirit from the Lanqing or stand up from Harriet. Mike Hogan there would be none. It would be an UN nominated Being Alive live from company. I've been practicing it months. Actually eligible showed up on my spotify. Most listen to songs of the year do you do that. Driver doesn't do all the other parts. You like. You know Bobby. I can't quite and keep them and achieved that level of mastery. That's it's incredible rushing and again i. I didn't really know. This is the the most recent production ten years ago or whatever and so kind of recognize the song when he sang it in the movie. And since then I now know it by heart and so it's amazing to watch it again and watch all the voices of the other characters anyway. That's my favorite the musical moment and nothing will change it it is. I'm not kidding. You my favorite song for my favorite musical. So I'm really happy that it's your most listened song Westbound Five Katy Katy which Richard nominated song reducing carrier. I should mention I that you did mention cats. I mentioned the beginning. But we should note that cats got nominated for nothing but song And that seems weird and maybe not a great time for cats but also you know it's cats I would pick the recommend song you think is the easiest like that. Seems kind of like a Not like Elton hitting the high notes anymore. So I feel like I could handle it without embarrassing whistle too much. I would definitely do into the unknown from frozen to but I would do the panic at the disco. Oh version not not difference just like more rollicking guitars. I think It anyway that one. I know that I would with all the high notes and I don't WanNa put myself after that kind of scrutiny and Richard. Obviously I'm going to answer for Richard But obviously do beautiful. It.

"I feel like that might work with with the Hollywood Foreign Press, but I feel like the controversies and they're not small they're not like ginned up controversies leg. I would say the stuff that we heard around Selma or stuff like that. Like, these are genuine concerns around these two movies. I don't think they'll survive the Oscar voting process like I'm feel very confident about I think there's a faction in the academy. That would also be receptive to that kind of thinking. But I think that the look the the main thing about both of these movies is that they're artifice surely not artificially, well pretty artificially this year. But they're separated into two best picture groupings that kind of ended up being so weird with the musicals in the drama thing and the comedies like everything was in the wrong place. And so the movies we've been talking about all year as being most likely to win. Best picture are like stars. Born Roma wasn't even allowed to be in either category stars born was in the totally wrong category. Perhaps arguably, and you know, so I don't know. I think it's I think that this probably is like a one night only, you know, sort of hilarious. Bizarre travesty. But what I don't know. What do you guys think? Well, this is always the kind of tricky game with the Golden Globes is you know, we can say at one side of our mouth. Well, they don't really mean anything because it's just the eighty people who have have any people deciding this. So we shouldn't actually looked at it to predict the Oscars and yet from the other side of her mouth burly. But yeah, kind of can in some ways, and I, but I don't think I think this is a weird year where the best picture winners. Probably don't. Actually have a shot of repeating at the Oscars. But again, what do we know? I think the most interesting thing of the evening for, you know, future awards. Prediction was Glenn Close witting in the best actress drama because not only did she come out of a movie that we've got a small release in the summer that had premiered of one film festival a year prior like that was a hard mountain to climb, but she got good reviews for it. But she also gave this really great speech that kind of gathered some of the larger social issue surrounding the orchard together in a nice, rousing concise way. And to me, I feel like she won the Oscar based on that speech. Well, yeah. Okay. Two things ever one. I want you out you both to know. And all of our listeners now that as soon as she won immediately. I heard my own words and little Goldman like a month ago. Whatever thrown back at me where I'm like where are you? Getting this Glenn Close narrative, it's crazy. It has nothing to do. Do with reality. And then I was like oh God to talk about this on the podcast of. But this is so good. And I'm wondering do you feel comfortable sharing some of your unified theories on speech giving at the Golden Globes with with our listener? So to Richards earlier point, I think that the Globes are not super predictive for best picture, although they obviously kind of indicate momentum. And I think the anxiety of voters that they don't want to be wrong is always you have to think about that. When you're watching like if this group of voters give somebody in a ward, another group of voters is going to think maybe we should take that more seriously than we did before. So that's helpful. I guess to rhapsody and certainly green book. But where it's really predictive is that it's an audition. I think for actors and the academy voters are watching thinking we want to have a great show..

"I wonder how much performance abroad has to do with this kisses the Hollywood Foreign Press. And so, you know, the or not the body bodyguard, which was BBC's show picked up on that flakes. One. Richard Madden of game of thrones fame, a Golden Globe. Last night was the highest rated show in UK in the last decade. It was a huge phenomenon over there and not so much over here where it dropped on. Netflix sort of quietly, you know, similarly bohemian rhapsody has made over five hundred million dollars seventy four percent of its box office oil, which is a huge box office total abroad, and it's a huge movie overseas. And you know, Queen is a as much of a phenomenon here as it is around the globe. And so I don't know if that has something to do with it that that the sort of like broader global appeal that we maybe somehow sometimes miss outside of box office reports that we sometimes look at does that make any sense at all it does. Make sense. And I think that you know, that's as reasonable theory as any because from my perspective, and your you you brought up perspective critic like Mike like bohemian rhapsody, which I finally saw by the. Interception. Glows is demoted. Kind of wrote music by it showed us nothing. New stylistically are artistically beyond Rummy Malik, you know, big performance that so many other movies movies that were nominated the H MP recognized as some of the best of the year did show us something, you know. So it's kinda befuddling from a creative perspective. And I think from the other perspective, and this is something that I wrote about in my little wrap up the show last night was not only was he mean rhapsody, not the most certainly the best reviewed movie of the year. But quite light green book in another big success last night, even rhapsody is a movie shrouded in in controversy, particularly related to director Bryan singer who was fired from the project not further reasons having to do with sexual misconduct allegations. But those are there, and you also have green books that Cam Collins, our colleges Britain really well about has its own. Issues in terms of its historical veracity with regard to its main black character for whom her shawl e won an award playing. So it was felt as if this Press Association didn't either wasn't hip to the issues surrounding these two big winners or just didn't care, and I'm really curious. What what does it actually clash? I actually genuinely wonder if it if it is. And if we're in a kind of Trumpian like, let's let's clap back at the fake news moment with these words folks who are just feel like the woke movement has gone too far. And it's time to sort of you can imagine for instance, you could imagine at these little luncheons and dinners that they do and whatever the bohemian rhapsody team saying, look, the critics hate this. Because x y and z they're all whatever like, whatever they would say to denigrate critics, but this is a big hearted movie. This is the kind of movie that you know, like, we need in this industry these days and Rami Mao. Malek is like a great progressive hero. "Ad for your movie I've ever saying Golden Globe nominee or Golden Globe. And then it helps for Oskar. I would imagine. Yeah. Down the line. So I'm not a big fan of this. I know some people are we doing entertainment news show here. So I would be remiss if I didn't at least talk about who won last night. So here are last night's winters from the Golden Globes right now, keep in mind. This is just a recap of the major awards. They do have awards for both television and film, and I don't wanna go onto long, but the best performance by an actress in a television series musical or comedy that went to Rachel Brosnahan. For the marvelous MRs Mazel over there on Amazon best performance by an actor in television series, musical or comedy. Michael Douglas for the Kaminsky method. See I'm talking about best television series musical or comedy that went to the Kaminsky method from net flicks. Best performance by an actress and. A television series drama that went to Sandra oh for killing eve on BBC America. Best performance by an actor in a television series drama. Richard Madden for bodyguard best television series drama, went to the Americans over there on FX, the only supporting acting categories they have are for motion pictures, and that's for any motion picture, either drama comedy or musical best. Actress in a supporting role in any motion picture went to Regina king for if Beale street could talk best actor in supporting role in any motion picture MMA Herschel alley for green book best actor in a motion picture drama Rami Malik for his work as Freddie Mercury in bohemian, rhapsody, best actress and emotion picture drama, Glenn Close for the wife best motion picture drama bohemian rhapsody beat out star is born that was his prize best actress and emotion picture musical or comedy was Livia Coleman for the favourite best actor in motion picture musical or comedy Christian bale for vice can we see that best motion picture music? Comedy was the green book and then the category. I really cared about best motion picture animated that went to Spiderman into the spider verse, which I thought was pretty cool. So there you go those are your major awards from last night's Golden Globes. Speaking of the golden gloves. I didn't know this. But talk about where the money is. Did you know that if you're an actress was a nominee for the Golden Globes you can make somewhere in the neighborhood of two hundred thousand dollars just by walking on the red carpet? Really? Yes. Because the people who design clothes and handbags and make up they make deals with these actresses before the Golden Globe nominations or even announced they start to get an vibe on who's going to be nominated, and they will cut product endorsement deals with these actresses. So you can get fifty thousand dollars for wearing some jewelry. Another fifty thousand dollars for a certain clutch or handbag you're going to carry zainur for a gown might give you one hundred thousand dollars to wear their. Address and just by walking down a red carpet, you can make anywhere between fifty to two hundred thousand how do we get in the show business? Right. How do we become women in show business where popular win awards? Here's the thing. When they talked about it with the people who broker these deals they said like I mentioned they start negotiating before the nominations or even announced sometimes they'll take a bath. They'll think oh this person will be nominated. I'm art. But this deal has already check. And then sometimes on the other side, they do very well from themselves if somebody wins and their picture is everywhere and they're talking to every news outlet. And they said who were you wearing and they it's just great. But this end or someone is cheaper than the trying to shoot a commercial or something. About it's money. Well, spent way cheaper and gets more exposure. But I was blown away by that number two hundred grand just to show up at an award ceremony. Walked down the red carpet. Damn good living. Right there him. I guess guys. Don't really have that. We're suits. Yeah..

"Stephen Thompson, also with us in the wee hours of the morning is Glen Weldon of the NPR arts desk. Glenn? Yes. So we need to talk about some big winners as we mentioned in the intro on the film side. They were surprises to us. I guess and to some critics because they weren't necessarily every critics chart toppers, but green book and bohemian rhapsody were respectively. The winners for comedy musical and drama film. They did a great job this year on the Golden Globes honoring things that I have been putting off seat. So I need to go to you guys. Stephen were you surprised that the green book won the Golden Globe? I really was when you look at bohemian rhapsody bohemian rhapsody was a massive worldwide hit green book was not green book is the type of kind of traditionally awards e thing that feels like it could have been nominated for best picture in one thousand nine hundred eighty nine or nine hundred ninety six or two thousand three but it also didn't really capture the public's imagination. Bohemian rhapsody was like the movie all my relatives asked me about over Christmas. But green book seemed to kind of come and go. It was really surprising to see it win the big award at the end of the night. I've been putting off watching green book because I feared it would be this sort of placid uplift, you know, kind of very unchanging kind of kind of movie, and that speech by director, Peter Farrelly, which is just filled with all these platitudes about how we all need to find common ground. We need to do a lot more than that. That that didn't reassure me at all. Yeah. All we have to do is talk and to not judge people by their differences. But look for what we have in common. And we have a lot in common. We all want the same thing, we want love we want happiness. We want to be treated equally, and that's not such a bad thing. Thank you very much. He.

"I was starting to get concerned that it was gonna fall out of the out of contention. But so I think this is good news for that film for sure I really loved John David Washington's performance in that I'm really excited about it. But is this like a Hollywood royalty thing that the Golden Globes likes to do from time to time was he missed her Golden Globe. And some some reason pass right? I think they just really liked that movie. I mean, I think that that the atom driver nomination, spike, somebody like that will be for whatever reason for me. Anyway, it's been kind of an awards question, Mark. But it keeps popping up. And so I think again that that could be the academy goes to nine or ten or even eight like that. I think that we could expect to see it there. I also do think vice end black klansman there's sort of a little bit of a tradition. Probably the coolest thing. The does is reward movies that talk about how shitty America's. They're sort of like guys we have to spend a fair amount of time here like this is kind of a health scape. And this you should watch this movie. I know I keep lake sort of strong arming us back to TV when we're please full on full on film awards season. But I think he was talking about pose getting nominated both you know in in the drama category. And then a nomination for Billy porter. Because that's that was a surprise to me in a really pleasant one. We tend to think of or I tend to think of the PA as more conservatives mostly conservative or maybe Baksi conservative, and I was just really delighted to see in there. So that's a nice some nice representation for that show, which I guess won't be EMMY eligible until next year is that right? Premier? It is one of the shows it's grown constantly like I feel like every week. I see more people being like, oh my God. Wait pose. Can I ask a weird possibly completely irrelevant question because I'm gonna let you guys know right now, it's going to be my mission to get Catherine O'Hara an EMMY win for shits creek this year. I love her is shits creek like so I never saw it until it popped up on Netflix and suddenly was trending every day. And now, I'm main lining it. And it's the greatest thing ever. Why hasn't it gotten anything? Is it just because it was on some random Canadian TV channel? And will it have a chance Joanna? I don't know. Can we make this happen? Yeah. Let's do it. It airs pop before like, you know, what is pop has original programming. I only know about it because of the TCI's, and they do a presentation every year the TCI's. So I know all about pop I only know about it. Because when I watched creek on Netflix. There's a pop tile. And then I'm like, oh that exist so Papas in running. She's creek for several years imported out of Canada. And then I think he popped up on Netflix last year and a bunch of people start it, you know, like. Three seasons. N people started binging, and it's so good. I think Richard, and I are both huge fans that show. Mike, welcome to the party. Katie. I got maternity leave coming up. I'll I'll have a lot of time to watch it. I think Kindy TV in general doesn't get we seeing a lot more of Canadian imports because Netflix, Hulu and all this dreamers who are really thirsty for content. Are like, oh, here's a source for English language programming that we can pull down. And so we're seeing a lot more of Canadian programming on streaming. But I think it's just not like CBC programs don't campaign, I think in the same way. So I just don't I don't think you know, they're seeing that. Well, but let's do it. Let's we're going to make it happen. So I just wanted to interject briefly we should mention since we are an award season podcast that since last time we recorded. We now have all of our award season owes lent or main ones lined up, which is Kevin Hart will be hosting the Oscars and Sandra Owen, Eddie Sandberg will be hosting Golden Globes. Sandra Andy Sandberg is like a really funny kind of odd pairing until you go and watch their presentation at the..

"And if we felt like there were any major surprises there or questions, we have things. I mean, the Golden Globes is there each let me start that. Again. I'll informed breslin station is famous for especially in television trying to plant their flag on something new. And so you always get something kind of like fun and under the radar in the TV categories. I think people would agree that one of the things this year is the Kaminsky method, which was a Netflix serious, Michael Douglas and Alan Arkin, which is very much like Golden Globe. Catnip? And it's something that we, you know, predict it definitely in our Vanity Fair predictions considering the caliber of the actors in it, and then it's about show business. But. Still just a show that I don't know a lot of people watch on Netflix, and then Ditto, you know, you were talking about this a little bit off air, Katie the bodyguard, which was the number one most watched show in the UK this year, Richard Madden's, sort of spy tents, political spy drama, Richard gave our Richard gave it a lovely review on on the dot com. But you know, I it straight streaming on Netflix. And maybe this is just an F problem of like too, much content. But once again like I think that show flew under the radar for some people. So that's something that the Golden Globes often dozen television is just sort of shine in the movie realm. I think a lot of us go like what why? And in the TD Ron was especially in the area of so much. She I think it's sort of like, oh interesting. Like, this is going to get this Mozart in the jungle or whatever it is going to get a little boost from the attention from the Golden Globes. Yeah, I'll say that I was typing up the nominees as they came in and our movie predictions were far more accurate than our TV predictions. Which I think happens every year. It's just really..
