Globes host Gervais goes for broke
"To want to start with the golden globe awards last night Ricky Jr vase everybody's talking about him today he is trending on Twitter as he should be he was brilliant last night as you said earlier the the only award show that would ever even consider employing a guy like Ricky Gervais ace as a host is the golden globes economy which would never do what the Emmys the Grammys and all those why is that because they're the foreign press they're not American that's right they knew that subject to all this pressure or at least they don't cave to it and that's why yes it's refreshing that they would hire a guy like that fifth time it'll be as last of course and as the show went on any took more more shots deserve it shot to Larry is shots perfectly done he was up there less and less he did become frustrated he admitted that at one point last night when in fact it was a getting back up on stage but he did his work early and he made sure that you see Tom Hanks face all over the world today that look like all boy like he like I said earlier like he ate some tainted Bubba Gump shrimp yeah that look on his bush hi but he did go out it early and he kind of set the the rules for what it what he thought would be a good a warzone everybody listen will play the folks that didn't but he did set the rules early when he told Hollywood we'll take a listen justice do this if you want what
Ricky Gervais doesn't waste any time offending at Golden Globes
"I last night the Golden Globe Awards Ricky Jr vase hosting let's take a listen to a little bit of what Ricky Jr vase have the sack hello and welcome to the seventy seventh annual golden globe awards I'm with the device thank you and you'll you'll be pleased to know this the lost time I'm hosting these awards so I don't care anymore I'm joking I need to have a date if you do it in a war tonight don't use is a a platform to make a political speech right you were known positions election the public about anything you know nothing about the real world most of you spend less time in school than Greta from bugs so if you come up it's too late in the war thank you I gin when you called I'm not the regular rates pretty funny last night let's get into with Emily Justin's get call Treader over at the federals had been watching all this very closely and only good morning morning then wow this was a breath of fresh air what happened last night yeah it was really great I mean this is definitely recruiter rage stuck so and kind of what his tradition of the call gold is tennis takes no it he spares no body and that's why he's such a fun house the golden globes by that ask them back on again the group because of like the two zero Lisa from Arkansas or shows good fit for them but I thought lessons with little bit different and he actually confronted Hollywood over her one scene in doctrine for being friends with Jeffrey after he can't really just went down the list and he even went on the thing about big tax you know he said that all like to think you're so work so well but look at the company you work for apple and Amazon and Disney and so this is really have a contract in Hollywood Hollywood on some of its biggest blind spots and right to the face of the clock we close it was really really something to watch so is this part of a new trend that we're starting to see we saw Dave Chapelle come out with a very very edgy special for Netflix and got rave reviews from certain factions but not from others but is this what we're going to start to see we're gonna start to see comedians push back against this woke Hollywood that we say oh yeah absolutely I mean is even saris special but came out last year even the shovel who's really best known for having both performance at the White House correspondents dinner a couple years back her new stand up special actually sort of pushes back on some of the the the new rules political correctness and so I think there's a classic comedian and it is a lot of comedians frankly who are so tired of the new rules that their new specials reflect that they're really starting to concentrate on back in their teens so this is something that we're seeing you know become a lot more widespread I think it shows that the momentum has really turned in the battle against political correctness of within the cultural battles and close critical political correctness because comedians you know there's a lot that were hit hardest by some of the stuff I remember Jerry Seinfeld thank you would go to college campus anymore and so they really have been out front fighting this fight and your vases totally been one of the I. with the greatest comedians throughout last night absolutely requested that yeah but then the palace guards closing ranks I you see websites like vox which is a liberal website they came out with an article in advance of Ricky Gervais is hosting last night and and trying to attack Ricky Jr vase for all of his offensive jokes in the past there is clearly a category of liberal writer and thought leader I guess who is very opposed to this type of breaking ranks yeah it's funny I mean he's already gotten some criticism from the last of them like what twelve hours I've seen a lot of entertainment site hosts some sort of like they're criticizing him basically saying tired schtick it's not funny all those jokes are all the same but I don't think that's how a lot of the viewers the host I think there's a reason that he was asked back to the golden globes especially it's just so funny that Hollywood invite him to basically skewer Hollywood's every give his case it's because it's actually really energy unit called about well so those critiques that it's not funny someone I think we're totally flat and I expect that most people were watching last night were very but the people who were watching last night were not the target of the jokes they were the people who were in on the joke switches which is us we've we've been bemoaning the fact that Hollywood isn't funny anymore Saturday Night Live is another one suddenly in the last couple of months or so Saturday's life has become funny because they're starting to to I guess poked a finger at themselves now they're starting to point the finger at themselves now we haven't seen that in a long time from them so what's happening is and if we remember back to literally go Saturday Night Live remember Christmas episode song lists the cast All I Want for Christmas is you to Robert Muller and it was just a moment of their total perfectly calculation of the lack of self reflection how unfunny become and a year later do you really start to see that self awareness that showing up in some of the sketches and I think the trump era has forced Hollywood to confront some of its insularity and you reduce your interesting moment once the orders that you put the idea was that you guys are qualified about politics because that was on the school greens Greta son Burke it and so I think there's been something of the truckers kind of forced them because there's so much talk about all the stuff that's at the front center of the cultural conversation forced them to kind of record with their role with everything now again that doesn't mean that all of them are listening to Trish are cut Michelle well you spoke a very political acceptance speeches right very liberal acceptance because I mean the show Williams who is reportedly pregnant by the way went on tires that it's about portents of abortion it doesn't mean that everybody's listening but I do think you are start starting a few more people

The Politics Behind The Golden Globe Awards
"Welcome to the frame. I'm Steven Cuevas filling in for John Horn. But we're about to hear from John On. He's covered the movie industry for more than two decades as a print reporter and so we figured he's the best person to explain the significance or lack thereof of the Golden Globe awards. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association today announced the nominees for its annual awards which take place in early January but rather than detail the usual inexplicable explicable nominee choices and snubs. We thought we talk about the relationship between movie fans the Globes and the entertainment industry. I John tells us who makes up the association. What's important to me about the Golden Globes and about some other kind of minor film? Awards is that this is not a representative presentative body. They're about ninety journalists. And if you go on the website for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association you can no longer even find their names teams or where they work. It's a very small group of people and they have undue influence because the movie studios have figured out that if they wou- the voters for the Golden Globes and they're filmmakers win awards at the Golden Globes it kind of create some sort of momentum for the Academy Awards but none none of it is very legitimate and H. MPA has cleaned itself up. It's not a scandal ridden as it has been in years past but this isn't an elite group of film writers or film critics that are making these selections and if you look closely at the selections not just this year but but in past years the fact that they are really that serious ask kind of film. Lovers starts to reveal itself pretty quickly. How so? Well let's talk about a couple of past nominations twenty thirteen. There were three nominations for a movie. I bet you you've never heard of salmon. Fishing in the Yemen amend that was a Golden Globe Walker. If you go back nine years to twenty ten there was a movie with Johnny. Depp called the tourists that was largely largely derided that ended up getting multiple nominations at the Golden Globes. And I think if you look closely at some of the selections this year it's clear it's it's driven by the red carpet like who do they wanna have on the red carpet you look in the TV category. There are multiple nominations for the morning. Show a apple all series. That didn't get great reviews because Jennifer Aniston is coming reese witherspoon is coming as nominees and then you look at Ava d'auvergne as when they see us. One of the most critically acclaimed TV series of the past year didn't get any nominations so it's important for the NBC. Show to have that star Klaus so there's eyeball so so people watch. I think that's part of the bias historically for the Golden Globes that you can say it judging between good filmmaker and a less name they generally are going to vote for the last name and they also have some historical by sees you know that are shared by the Academy in the seventy seven year history of the Globes. Only five women have ever been nominated for best director and this year. There are lots of really good female filmmakers that were up Greta Gerwig for little women. Olivia Wilde for book. SMART Hurrell for honey. Boy Marielle Heller for Beautiful Day in the neighborhood. Not One of them got nominated so golden gloves has a pretty poor history when it comes to nominate women the Golden Globes has made some the effort to try to rehabilitate this reputation. What has it done? It's made sure that people who are members actually have legitimate emmett credits. As journalists there been some reports of. I guess you could call it. Bribery or expensive gifts in the past. I think they've tried I to eliminate all of that so again they have cleaned up their act. But there's only so much legitimacy you can bring to yourself when you're only ninety journalists writing for publications that if we had the names I guarantee you you've probably never heard of them and yet the industry I I guess mostly plays along and an actor or director or studio can use success at the Globes as part of their campaign going into Bosco Bosko season one hundred percent and I think that is one of the most interesting parts of the story. Everybody in Hollywood knows in their soul that at the Golden Globes are really not totally legitimate and yet the studios independent companies and marketing departments. Embrace raise them because they recognize. There's a game to be played and the game is. We're going to court the Golden Globe voters we're going to have screenings and QNA's for them and and if we get a nomination are actor or filmmaker is going to be on their awards show and people are going to start talking about the film and one thing gets the other but they do know that really. It's not totally legit but it serves their purposes academy award. Campaigning is a multi title million dollar business. There are people who work as campaign consultant who get hundreds of thousands of dollars for getting nominations or Oscar wins wins. There is a huge business behind all of this and in some ways it might drive ticket sales or people to stream movies so it's driven by finance finance is driven by trying to get eyeballs on the movies but it's all kind of a hustle so John I've never covered the entertainment industry that closely so so like a lot of people in the public eye really always just saw the Golden Globe awards as the first among that more high profile award shows to spotlight the top films of the year. Going into Oscar seasons am I am I off on that. Were not technically off. I mean because the Hollywood Foreign Press Association Asian nominates into different categories for most of the major film awards they cast a wider net. So just mathematically. They're bound to include lewd a lot of movies. That end up getting nominated. I wouldn't say they're that much of a bellwether but because they're embracing so many movies. They have a a mathematical chance of getting most of those things right. John Horn out in New York. John Thanks for joining us to talk about the Golden Globes. We'll see when you get back. Golden Globe Nominations: Netflix Leads — In Both Movies And Television
"Golden globe nominations came out of this morning so that's going to error the seventy seven golden globes will air on January fifth the Beverly Hilton hotel with Ricky Jr vase is the host the seventy seventh annual golden globe awards it's always it's always a fun time because the actors everybody very very relaxed that might be one way to say it they're very relaxed well a lot of them appear to be have snapped in old sold now Matt Roush is on the line Matt good morning how are you pretty good how you doing good to have this chance to chat with you John Heinz in for Dave Lee here and golden globe nominations coming out here and and we're learning more and more about this a couple of my favorites made the cut including Michael Douglas and Alan Arkin for the Kaminski method which is just a I just I just that is a a marvelous marvelous shell yeah and they really do love it it didn't get quite as much love by the Emmys and all but yeah it did well for them last year at the golden globes I think Michael Douglas one and maybe Alan Arkin dead but aunts and sort of the show so that was good so good showing from them although I do think when it comes down to it what's probably going to win the big prizes this year because of the show this what the Emmys last year is Amazon's flea bag starring Phoebe Waller bridge and she's a real rising star in the show was so traffic is only six episodes for to see them then and still that so made a big impact and it's what the critics awards as well so yeah and then the marvelous with this Maisel as well the the Amazon show that the just dropped last weekend and and so people are Startin side are just now binging a probably but that one does very well at the awards to be yes and the the Kaminski method is a favorite of the golden globes and the golden globes do love shows that have sort of really starry cast on them like Michael Douglas coming back to television and that was a really big deal so another another show I think somebody beat some people might be surprised got a bunch of nominations is the morning show from the brand new streaming service apple but it's a very starry inside the baseball behind the scenes look at a morning show that has the Matt Lauer type scandal it was nominated for best drama and the two stars Jennifer Aniston Reese Witherspoon were both nominated and they're just big stars and and the globe I mean people like Jennifer Aniston just like tailor made for a globe nomination so even though that still got some X. reviews it's in the top tier of the drama series being nominated for the clubs the thing about that let me mention mark marvelous Mrs Maisel how many episodes do they drop when they drop for a season something they do to him this time they did eight episodes episode so and then when we look at this when we look forward to what's going on I'm curious to know this doesn't ever become like a precursor though for the Emmys doesn't because the Emmys are quite a ways away it's not as it's not as tied to the Emmys as it is seen as like an Oscar precursors of right look at this is like a bellwether for what's going to happen the Oscar nominations and what's really happening there is the fact that Netflix is has just released dominated the field in both television and movies with movies like the Irishman M. marriage story and even smaller films like you well actually with the but that Eddie Murphy movie dolomite is my name got a comedy nomination so did very well they got seventeen nominations in movies they also got seventeen nominations in in television with shows like the crown which just happened just dropped in amazing affect the third season a few weeks ago with a brand new cast including Olivia Colman as the queen Tobias Menzies as prince Philip and Helena Bonham Carter as the sister princess Margaret all three of those got globe nominations as well so they love that there is that a show that a lot of people milling would be familiar with called unbelievable it was a limited series true crime drama that's had a mirror weaver and Toni Collette played detectives and Kaelin beaver a young girl who was sexually assaulted and it dealt with this serial rapist is really just a great series but didn't get a lot of buzz because to get swallowed by all the Netflix stuff this would popped out and got four nominations which is as many of the crown and the most nominated TV mini series which was Chernobyl on HBO so again in a lot there's so much TV nowadays it's hard for anything to pop through well yes I heard you mention that more than once there is just an awful lot of television these days so that's pretty much the way it it what it comes down to to hear so what are you looking forward to see what's coming up what's new on the radar is there anything new on the radar well not a lot new but I will tell you one thing that is if you're watching TV this week in what if one of your habits of the watch wheel of fortune along with jeopardy that you're gonna notice the Pat Sajak is nowhere to be seen on the set of they're going into their big winner promotion they called the secret Santa give away and Vanna white is stepping in for Pat Sajak this the next week these episodes were filmed while he was recovering from a domino surgery and she's in a guest once before at least but but and then the many many years they've done the show but to have her doing the Pat Sajak they'll be startling for people if they didn't know this happened with those episodes airing this and next week and the Paley this budget Disney characters on the set as well because of the Disney promotion so I don't know what that means group is going to turn over letters or what it was in late night you know we were back in the days of Johnny Carson there used to be you know guest hosts were pretty much of a regular thing with the take a vacation they let celebrities coming together so the almost never see that anymore but for the next two weeks on James cordons sort of rambunctious late late show the show the comes on on CBS following call there he's got a guest host filling in while he goes in films with a Netflix movie and so we're gonna see Alicia keys and item later on you'll see Melissa McCarthy said and then Jeff Goldblum and and Harry styles field the rapper lots lots of the under some quite a few more so for the next two weeks are we different Gasol's every night on the on the James cordon show which is a really fun show a lot of people don't stay up that late to watch it but again I would like to see more of more of that like having people stepped in when when the when the when the host goes away so you don't want to repeat mode and just spread the wealth a little bit yeah one of one people are gonna that job all right well I'll tell you what Dave Lee will be back with you next Thursday I just get to fill in today and tomorrow he'll check back in with you next Thursday I mean next Monday it's Monday for goodness sake well it's a pleasure to talk to you John always yeah I was of a joint chatting with you Matt because you because you know the stuff and it's it's it's good thank you so much for the visit this morning my pleasure thanks again all right

"Up. Woo. They drove off the road. Are it came in eighth place at six million dollars on the mule cleaning clean Eastwood movie was nine hundred eighth at five point six million dollars in rounding out the top ten was by it came coming in at three point two million dollars at the box office in its only up to thirty five million dollars at the box office totally for its third weekend. So it's it started out to be good. But he kind of this kind of dropped off in the last week or so vice I, you know, a movie that we actually brought back bohemian rhapsody on its eleven place at three point two million dollars. So we and we were selling it out over the weekend. Since one some Golden Globe awards. So that's the top movies of the this weekend. Hopefully this coming weekend Martin Luther King weekend. Hopefully will do a lot better at the box office. I don't know. Glass, which is supposed to be the big one that everybody waited on their starting to discover that the reason it's a January movie is because it's not getting good reviews at all is getting ripped apart. Yeah, I've hearing that. But I still think it's gonna do very well at the box office. It's lease its first weekend. You'll it's a trilogy. You know, unbreakable. I believe will come out in two thousand. Yes. And then split come out a couple of years ago two thousand sixteen and this is the third in the trilogy and both of those movies did a lot of business at the box office. I know split we were selling out the big houses when it came out. So that's all I'm thinking that it's going to happen. Least this weekend. For glass, people are going to want to see the end of that trilogy. And I I'm going to see it. I didn't see split though, didn't see split. But I know the premise I'm going to see it just because I want to finish out everything. And I thought unbreakable was nice superhero movie at change from all of that. So. I'm hoping you know, it's got two great actors. You know, Bruce Willis Samuel Jackson. Big draw in like third installment of the trilogy the ending. So I'm sure it's going to do very well at the box office. You know, it's rated PG thirteen. That's a great rating brings a lot of people in drama mystery sci-fi thriller. So I'm hoping this. We just should be the number one movie at the box office this weekend from Martin Luther King weekend glass. Stories. Abilities. What we are. Ah? Thirteen. I think the last scene is where Bruce Willis throw some guy threw a door. That's as you should typical. I guess. John Maclean's gotta do it. Somehow. Did you see unbreakable John or no? It was the perfect superman story without being superman. It was really really good. And I guess it split was really good as well. But. When you're doing something like that. You gotta I I'm just hoping is good. I can't even put it into words. I'm just hoping this really good well considering that it is a slow weekend. But you said that you have some we have our phantom events that start up this week. Yes. Sorry about that. Yes. And the first development that starts today that will show this Saturday at nine pm. We have the world welterweight keeping chip from MGM grand in Las Vegas. We're going to be showing Meaney pack, the owl versus avian. Bronner? I of course, many Paquito on his. Been around for like eighteen years or so coaster twenty years probably cost his Zoe fine politician in the filthiest. Yes. Yes. Either find connotation. His record at sixty wins. Seven losses to draw in this Augean Bronner thirty three three and one. He's from Cincinnati, Ohio. So that should bring some people in to watch this. This is a live event on Saturday at the atlas Great Lakes team sixteen only at nine PM. It's cost twenty dollars. You're telling me you're putting that on over the Cavs versus the nuggets. Yes. "It you know his daughter went into a very difficult line of work you know she wanted to be an actress it's a very very tough road he knows that he's been doing it for years so all of a sudden he finds out that his daughters career was thwarted was stopped because she wouldn't sleep with this highpowered producer why wouldn't be upset an old man very angry that here's a quick question on sunday the golden globe awards are going to be on seth meyer's is hosting golden globe awards how do they do that how does he go up there for the monologue this is the first major awards show that's taking place since the big harassment scandal in hollywood so it has to be addressed but how do you do that in a way that both pleasing to the audience but at the same time respectful of all the women who suffered how do you do that do you do it in the sense like i don't think we'll be hearing any thank yous to harvey weinstein tonight or something like that where it's brought up but it's just kinda hushed under the rug a little bit i wonder you you you almost have to remember a couple of years ago so when chris rock hosted the academy awards and for about a month and a half or two months prior to the words it was made clear that this was the whitest academy awards of all time that no african americans had been nominated for director for best actor for best actress all the major categories were it was basically just white people that was it so chris rock was hosting and there was the same how to talk with ended a fantastic job of it because he called it out immediately he ran with it he he was respectful of the situation but at the same time he you know he didn't hide it so dissect myers and not only seth meyer's but jimmy kimmel is hosting the academy awards this year it will still be a major story by the time we get to the academy awards there's other awards shows if you're hosting those words shows how do you find that balance you know i don't know and you can't not say something don't you have to address it right right if if you are hosting one of these award shows and you just completely didn't.
