"Jack eichel notched his second hat trick of the season and fourth of his career and leading the golden knight's 7 two pounding of the blue jackets. Alex patrol had a career high four assists for Vegas, which moved back atop the Western Conference standings with 92 points and took a two point lead over the kings in the Pacific division. Pfizer buys Seagen for $43B, boosts access to cancer drugs
"Pfizer is announcing its offer to acquire a Seattle based drug company that specializes in new cancer treatments that use antibodies to fight the disease. Federal regulators would still have to approve the deal, but Pfizer seeking to buy a C gen. To broaden its offering of cancer treatments that target tumor cells while sparing healthy tissue. And dave and i both had vacation time to burn up before the season started. I got to ask my my girlfriend question. She's no longer my girlfriend. She's my fiance which is a pretty cool feeling but also terrifying because now all our free time is dedicated to planning a large event for all our family and friends. So you know you take the good with the bad because it's all actually really good and really exciting but yeah it's been It's been a pretty crazy in eventful a couple of weeks. Well congratulations. i'm sure it will Sure be wonderful if bailey's listening congratulations are as well. Yes she is pretending to not listen in the background. As a mature all our listeners will send along appreciate it. We our excited to be backward a little bit more relaxed rejuvinated because we both had time to get away. But now we're back around las vegas because things are starting to pick up at least a little bit hockey wise. The gold nights have their rookie camp. So let's get into some of the things that we have missed since we've been away one of the big things that we should throw out especially because this is golden knights. Podcast is the fact that the nights are not going to require fans to get vaccinated or provide a negative nineteen tests to attend their games. However that means that masks are going to be required right now for everyone going to gain because there is a statewide mass mandate in indoor spaces. Right now if people remember. We've touched on this on podcast before we took our little break governor. Steve cecil ac said large venues could get out of the mask. Mandate if required vaccinations in the raiders. Jumped on that so being at least partially vaccinated is kind of required of for almost everybody to go to a raiders. Game this year but that means that people don't have to wear mass at allegiance stadium of the nights decided to not follow that route. They decided instead that. We're not gonna acquire vaccinations but we will instead require masks so basically be pretty similar to when they first came back last year except the obviously still have full capacity but require mass to be on at all times except when people are eating or drinking of course it is also possible. We point out that the mass mandate might go away at some point the seasons kind of impossible to say a based on the number of cases in each county so once the numbers go down. To kind of an acceptable level the nass mandate automatically goes away. So it's entirely a numbers thing. It's not like you know us. Cecil has to just wake up one day and decide that. We're good with masks Literally a numbers game and so we'll see if that number happens go down enough where at some point people go two nights game unmasks the season but for now That is not the case a dave. Are you surprised at all that. They didn't follow the raiders. Lead or surprise of this kind of the the route. They chose in terms of how they're going to deal with. You know having fans in the building the season. I mean i think unfortunately have to be careful off with how i saying. I don't want anything to be construed as political or anything like that with this subject Like i said. I think it's unfortunate that i have to put that disclaimer on this conversation. I mean i guess maybe a little bit surprised. Only because so. Many other teams of donald. It wasn't like the knights have been setting a precedent or would have had to be the ones out front and kind of answer all the questions or anything like that. The raiders did it. You see a bunch hockey team stewart. I think today there was an announcement from seattle that they were gonna require vaccination and masks at least one hundred percent on that but definitely oxidation so so again like other teams of give kind of already you know. Kick down the door on this. And if the night's wanted to go that way certainly followed other teams lead on it Maybe i'm a little surprised. They didn't just because other teams have. But i think he made a good point. Like maybe i'll have you kind of articulate this yourself like they weren't really motivated real motivation. I guess for them to do it. That way and i guess i do kind of see that side of it so i get why the nights would feel like. They didn't have to do it. The raiders way because they're dealing with less numbers possibility that you know conditions can improve some time during the course this season so i didn't wanna necessarily box themselves in to having to you know do vaccinations. Negative coke. Nineteen tests right away. I mean as you said dave. There's certainly an argument for not only from just kind of the moral ethical visa just fact. The teams are doing a lot of the canadian. Nhl teams have done it as you said. Seattle has kind of announced it. We've seen this other professional sports teams go about it as chicago. That makes sense same with holden a little bit in terms of you know he was a guy that wasn't on the nhl roster. Most of last year wants an opportunity to play so we can get another contract. And you know he's not going to be kind of in the nights a lineup for lack of a better word of their first choice. Line-up 'cause they wanna keep developing nick hag so it makes sense to you'll find another home for him and obviously they got a forward that they really like back in davos and you know. We touched on the flurry stuff already. I mean but those are three guys who had a lot of ways. Where as you mentioned. Keith glue guys. I think even former nights broadcaster mike mckenna had a tweet the other day that said you know that's a lot of elmer's that lasts the the golden knights you know reeves is a guy who you when he was healthy. Scratch was like coming out of the locker room. The fist-bump every guy is they are coming off the ice ameet zach white cloud. I remember in the playoffs. Had very long speech after east got suspended saying like how much meant for him and his career and kind of helping him along. I mean as you mentioned. He's a guy that didn't mind sometimes stepping up and talking to the media when things were tough. I mean nicole. Super happy-go-lucky guy. Didn't complain despite the fact that he didn't play a lot last year and i think you could tell how happy all his teammates were for the success that he had in the playoffs last year. And then obviously mark. Andre flurries marc andre fleury and i think kind of any locker room he walks into in some way shape or form gravitates a little bit around his orbit even though he doesn't you know. Wear a letter because goal is typically. Don't so it's be a very different. Feel dave in those three guys In reeves holden and flurry. Who i think are good at keeping things loose and not necessarily taking themselves or you know the fact that they play a game for a living too seriously all the time that they kind of take time to stop smell the roses a little bit and enjoy their jobs and so it is a new feel and dynamic in that locker room with a three guys like that no longer with the team. Yeah i love that. You brought the the mike mckenna tweet out because i was kind of on my mind when i was thinking of you know the glue stuff and i love the alborz. It's it's a great way to phrase it in. I put something out to on twitter and and you know there was a lot of aunts and i feel like there was some people that you know maybe push back on it a little bit and i don't want to necessarily push back on them right now but i would say that the this is a job for them and i think there needs to be a little bit of an understanding or or folks can equate some of this to walking into an office and this is their office in. It's no different than you know you go in in a manner woman who's just know always fun laughing joking in makes it an environment that you wanna be era and especially when it's hard and it's toss those are the people you know that that you want to lean on and you need to keep it light off speak to one other elements of this. He's mention is having people like marc andre. Fleury around him is good for him. It's healthy for him. I can actually relate to this. Marc andre fleury. And i think we saw a lot of that with rob leonard. How happy he was because coming to work everyday was fun working with marc. Andre fleury was fine. Yeah and i think it's probably the last part of what she said. That that maybe stands hours the most significant i always think back to when he was acquired and a left at tells the story of his wife other people. I have also been following a major league baseball trade deadline news today as recording list. The nba draft was last. Night and trades are happening. I am a devout like olympics follower. So i've been watching. Like i dunno like eight hours of olympic coverage all day. I've got up early to watch. Us women's soccer this morning sodom win in a penalty shootout so that was dope. It began wednesday morning and scott just nuts to say the least So we talked to general manager. Climate crimen late wednesday afternoon. And he said you've denied three priorities. Offseason were a manage their salary cap which they've Accomplished by trading. Marc andre fluorine. Getting seven million dollars in cap space to resign defenseman alec martinez and a three improve their four group. So we got news on a. B. actually two days before free agency because martinez agreed to a three year deal. It's gonna count up five point two five million dollars against the cap annually up pretty good deal for martinez who just turned thirty four. It's worth noting And i think this is very funny that he counts up fifty thousand dollars more than shaef theodore against the cap so he is now the nights basically second highest paid defenseman so. We don't think we need to spend time kind of talking about martinez virtues or how valuable. He was to The nights dave. But i know we've both kind of expressed skepticism in the past as to whether they were going to be able to. You know have the financial flexibility to make this happen. So how do you think these two sides are able to come together and make this work wealth. I was watching my tv on free agency. Day on wednesday. I would have known that you know as pretty high market for defensemen in layers out there you know. Thank you thank you. Kelly herman by yeah. I think the third year with alec martinez was probably the big. I think once the nights were willing to commit to that and then obviously the salary is pretty commiserate with you. Know what he would get on the open market. I think he would got more. Kevin mckernan said that as well. I think that's probably a concession. Even alec martinez would make you know if you if you asked him in in really got an honest answer but they gave him a contract. You know that was. That was good for him. It was herald good for the team. I know he likes three years in the security. That comes with that. And then you know there's some no move irks me some no-trade clause you know different teams in different years. I don't think we need to break that all down right this second by yeah alec tina's it seems like a good deal. I think most of all what what really came across with all that was in the process. He made it clear. And i think he's agent makes they wanna come back. He wanted to be in vegas. San in there was a way to do it that worked for both sides. If he got a deal that he felt good about you know he was going to returning in a soon as the golden knights. Put something on the table that he was good with and they showed their commitment to him in in how much he means to them. You know the one the one thing if you imagine if you walked you know how they fill that hole you look around for you agency. There wasn't really a whole lot on the left side. Ryan suter got a four year deal from dallas. If i if. I'm with the result or move clause right and i don't think the nights would have come anywhere near that so you're not getting like if you take alkmaar knows out of this lineup. You know that's a big hole and now you know. Yeah there's some questions going forward can replicate. That is his body in a hold up at thirty four. Thirty five thirty six What can continue to give you know. The nights playing the style of game that he plays but for right now you know the the the way he solidifies on the blue line i don't think they could afford to lose him and as long as they were getting him at a good price which it seems like they. Did you know all parties are happy right. I think you pointed out definitely seemed like the compromise was his kind of average annual value. That five point two five million came in lower than what he would have gotten on the free agent market heading for sure looking at some of the prices that were given out to defensemen wants the market open but he did get a third year which provides them a lot of security and obviously that's going to be ultimately the thing that you know we'll have to look back on this deals over as a potential question mark because part of the reason martinez is so valuable to the gold. Nights is the fact that he puts his body on the line. All the freaking time i mean. He led the league in blocked shots by a lot. In the regular season you led the nhl and block shots by a lot in the postseason despite playing on a broken foot.

He's got a scape. he's got practice. He's got to do something before you can. Just throw him into a playoff game so really some you know him out martinez probably until we see them out there skating. I have more doubts about them. Yeah we'll have to ultimately see how it plays out but needless to say especially in the case of patron or those are pretty important guys for the golden third probably like the have out there real quick. Real quickly jumped. I could just because i think. I ignored ryan reason. Certainly seeing him out there and we didn't ask now as maybe my fault specifically about him but he was on that fourth line and there was no placeholder really other than maybe patrick brown which i think is very feasible that we could see him centering. The fourth line. So i think of all those guys media and i said talk is the most likely it certainly looks like ryan reasons ago in based on march stones. Answer about getting some more physicality back in the lineup. It looks like i think that was sort of alluding to ryan reaves so we could probably see seventy five in there on sunday. Never forget that mark stone also said One of the last time the knights play the wild. Just wait till biggles. Seventy five out there and then they'll be chirpiness less so the night certainly. We'll be excited to have him back for this match up against the wall. If indeed he does play also be happy to have alex talk. Because of course alex tuck was taken from the wild in the expansion draft of that was multiple general managers. Go for the minnesota wild in those facts probably aren't unrelated but certainly. If tuck gives you know that he will probably be fired up to play against his old team. I let's go into the match ups a little bit deeper starting with the forwards. These two teams are. Actually i think you look at the top to bottom. They're both you know up there in terms of the deeper teams and the nhl. But then when you look at just the top end guys the knights definitely have more kind of quote unquote game breakers or just top. Six guys that you're very comfortable with compared to the wild what's interesting about minnesota's their top line is pretty much shutdown line and left wing during greenway center you'll erickson and then right wing. Marcus felino. they're kind of a grinding defensive line if they score goals they're usually not super pretty. You'd have to imagine that they're gonna be matched up against a shinar stevenson and mark stone whenever minnesota is at home for most of the time at five on five and then the wild second line is the one. That's the most interesting to watch because it has one strong playmaking wing in mats zuccarello. It has kind of a center gets dragged around invicta rask's but it also has just. This crazy phenomenal talent. Rookie correal caprice off. Who's gonna walk away with. The calder came over from russia. This is his first year in north america and he is eighth in the league in goals. I mean i think even the wild traded temper expectations with him. A little bit dave heading into the season but he is like delivered on everything. And i mean he's the real deal in kremlin touched on this. And i think you know during past podcast during the regular season when the knights play the while we probably touched on this so i hope i'm not repeating myself too much but you know sort of as we go through the series in and i always think about the wild there are three teams that i always sort of felt like were the sleeping giants in the nhl and the blues the flyers in the wild and they are always like right there come in water in just good and they can never seen league get like over the home and i think heart of the least. I'll talk about the wildwood. I think the two aspects criminal touched on this. And i don't think it's a big secret that sort of prevent all that were goaltending and then just having a dynamic playmaker a game-breaker a talent up front. That just seems have to account for that. You're never out of the game because of you can make plays out of nothing and you know there was so much expectation like you said because of how well he did in the cage fell in leading goals over there. And can you make the transition in north america. Cy all the other the the the the questions whatever he made a quick transition i think his age factors into that. He's an older rookie. And he's somebody that's going to be. I don't want no problem for the nights. A really gonna have to account for him and figure out in those eight games. What did they not do against him. You know if you're gonna ask them all takeaways time and space oriented but you know there. Were there specific things that are going to have to examine here. It goes through the book. I guess pizza or likes to say you know as they scout you know these teams and go over the eight games in in figuring out you know how to play against him in in putting him in that he doesn't want to be in. You know making him go to areas of the ice or directions reactions that he doesn't want to go. Do you know on his backhand versus four. Whatever it might be They're going to have to figure that out because he was. I think it was six goals in eight games during the series. Obviously you know a couple key ones down the stretch that really if you look at you know factored into the knights not being division champions in presidents trophy winners so i think he's gonna be a big factor.

I'm exhausted after that game last night. I don't know about you like that was just watching. We thought it was going to be one of the games of the year going in if absolutely delivered and was one of the games of the year coming out of but ultimately did not go the golden knights way so they entered the game with a chance if they beat the avalanche in any fashion. They win the west division third division title in four years which is obviously incredibly impressive. They win the presidents trophy for the best regular season record in the nhl which is insanely impressive. For a franchise. It's only in its fourth season but with all of this on the line heading into the game there ended up being a twist day of soup before we even got into the game. The knights ended up dressing. Only fifteen skaters because peyton cribs and alec. Martinez were injured in saturday's game against the saint louis blues and the knights didn't have the salary cap space the call up their replacements right away and this was such an unusual situation that the knights put general manager kelly moore criminal behind the podium to try to explain this to us because i think the team new The fan base probably wanted some answers heading into the most important game of the year where the team is playing a three skaters short because eighteen is normal number now. They will be able to play with seventeen for wednesday's regular season finale against the san jose sharks which obviously still has massive implications. That will get into later. We'll get emergency recalls to fill in for krebs and martinez in that game. Says they played shorthanded. Monday against the colorado avalanche dave. I'm counting on you here. I need you to put on your best salary. Cap wizard at an. I use the word. Wizard intentionally because this stuff all just seems like magic to those of us. I feel like on the outside and even myself who tries very hard to understand it and like actually reads the cpa and breaks down. But how do the nights get to the point where they had to dress a three skaters short in their most important game of the regular season. What's the best thing is none minutia filled explanation. You're able to provide were. We're up a creek. Let's go back to october to begin with because this all starts there in terms of how the golden knights got to this point in forking out a twenty million dollar. The they squeezed their way under the cap to start the season in january. And we have the funky thirteen five setup with keegan colas are in there because they don't want to put him on the waiver wire and all that sort of stuff so they sort of you know. Ride the line. I guess you could say of the salary cap all season. And then they add more at the trade deadline with matisse yen mark and the actually two teams chicago in san jose to take on part of his salary to make this all happen. I bring the solid because basically i'm trying to illustrate they have like literally no room to write against it. There's just nothing that they can do in terms of maneuvering so let's get to the peyton. Crabs deal right so the last few games to get him cribs in the lineup which they felt pete deboer said that kelly mcraven said that they felt like him being the lineup was their best chance to win will because of the salary cap and all the funky things to fit payton crabs in there they can only go with seventeen. They can't afford eighteen with him right so he gets hurt. The other day in that game and this is where. I'm a little bit still unclear in right to sell down because you can correct me later. So so credits. Because he was an emergency recall like his status when he when he got called up. A team and all of that in the roster was as emergency recall. Is there under the limit. Bob law will because of his house emergency recall. They can't they can't replace him for the game and then alec martinez gets hurt. It don't have the salary cap space. Replace him and so they're stuck with fifteen and they see like you said for the next game because they played shorthanded against the avalanche in. There's the rule you know. The it's like the emergency roster exception rule. I think i forget the exact phrasing that the used it earlier this season but that partially explains why they had been going was seventeen and in not eighteen and then it just happens to be that crabs is the one guy like they can't replace and then alec martinez gets hurt so because they have no salary cap it just puts them you know in an absolute bind like you said in in the biggest game of the year. "Pete. Deboer said on outs translator where he doesn't expect it to be like a long term thing. I i think you can expect that he would come back at some point. This season so on defense. I think you feel okay. And and yeah. Unless you're gonna swing for the fences. Which i don't see why you would do and i don't see who is even available to bolster your top six in that regard it would have to be adapted guy and if you're going to go out and make all these different moves and give up when maybe the solution is inside your own house. You know maybe that that makes you look internally instead of solving the problem outside. No i think that's a really good point Payton krebs was acquaint per game guy basically in the american hockey league when he got his chance. There jack do is currently a point per game guy in the american hockey league. Almost all assists. I think he's got a twelve assists compared to two goals so his linemates must be very very happy playing with him. We'll have to obviously see if the organization considers either of those guys. Nhl ready because of course neither has made their debuts yet but they certainly would come cheaper than a lot of the other potential options out there and the thing that obviously hangs over all of this and makes intriguing as the nights are kind of handicapped. But we'll see what the other teams and their division ended up doing because the other teams are still restricted but less so than the nights. The wild have some room to work with if they want to add anything. The avalanche have some room to work. With and i'm curious. If their general manager joe sakic is going to try to at least tinker with his lineup. Because they've got some contracts that need renewing or extensions this coming off season so money is about to get a lot tighter over there in denver so this might be one of the last time. They're able to kind of really make push and add some significant pieces so that's obviously something to keep an eye just because as obviously everyone knows these teams only play each other during the regular season. And they're only gonna play each other. The first two rounds the playoffs so it is interesting that they are just basically directly matching up with each other and a lot of ways. It doesn't really matter to the nights at least initially if you know. Toronto does anything if tampa bay does anything. If carolina does anything it matters to them what colorado minnesota and potentially saint louis does but i think saint louis has a little bit more restricted. I thought cameron had some interesting things to say about how he kind of asked to evaluate his team a little bit differently this year because that compared to previous years dave. Yeah you know that was actually a conversation that he and i had it was. It was interesting to hear what he had to say in terms of like the actually feel like they have a pretty good grasp on you know where they stock up. I sorta prison to the tomb in the context of you know you haven't played tampa this year. You haven't played any of the canadian teams like does that. Change your view of yourself. Does it make it harder to kind of i. Guess self evaluate dc. You know. obviously they're really good. Obviously there's some teams in their division that.

"As well. I like you. I don't really have a lot of high expectations for this team. But i do expected to bounce back a little bit like you mentioned. I mean air. Carlson seemed to have you noticed a ton of injuries for them over the last two years. tomasz hurdle got hurt for them. They're just a tricky team to figure out. Because they're kind of a stars in scrubs roster from my point of view where you look at maybe like their top eight or so guys where he talked about. Carlson burns hurdle mature even vander. Cain though obviously he's seems to be going through some stuff right now and you're like wow this is a really good players could pieces kind of have around. And then you look like their bottom six and their bottom Defensive pair and as you mentioned goaltending and it's just do not enjoy it at all. I think you could certainly make the argument for the under that depth and goaltending might be more important than ever this season with all of the kind of back to backs and this team has more back to backs than anyone in the nhl. That could really hurt them more than even in a normal season. But i still think there's enough pheno strong talent here to take the over next up is arizona. Their total is fifty nine and a half. Which would be eighty seven in a normal regular season. Now that's the ninth lowest total in the league so for those of you that have been paying attention right now. The west division has four of bid on online's ten worst teams in the nhl in terms of projected win total. So starting off greats out here in the west kind of like anaheim but i guess on a slightly elevated level. this is the team that lost of course former. Mvp taylor hall to the buffalo sabres in the off season. Which once again for me means. There's not much of anything to get excited about on this roster except for the goaltending which should would be pretty strong if yeah i kind of feel like he can take a lot of what i said about anaheim and copy and paste for arizona. I mean you know. Obviously taylor hall coming in. They sort of pushed a lot of the middle. And you know didn't even come close to a car on the river or whatever they needed. I i just don't see who scores goals for them. And then the other thing too is acting larson had his whole offseason. You know i guess power struggle or whatever you wanna call it kind of a public trade. Merry go round with go here Or will go here. And that's it and that's all you can do it. Hamstrung new gm. I'm sure everything's settled. They've talked it all out. But the one thing i'll say is this team. Seems like a very rick talk at team of just go. Go go be gritty for. Check the heck out of people you know in. Just just try to win three two in and make everything ugly. That's a rick target type team in in game. They're gonna play a lot of those. I think this year. It might be tough. It's almost like you know in a weird way. It's like facing an option team in football like you don't see it. There's a lot of these teams in the in the bonding to call the pacific the honda west division. Or whatever we got a call it That are kind of go..

"It. You know. I don't know what you can tell from guys doing drills and i know people like us to read into a lot of things in no you know. Give us your opinion. And how does he look in. Whatever i always say like well. You know unless it's obvious or one way or the other. It's hard to tell. Tomas jerko was really good. And even dopey me could point him out in the group in in scrimmages or whatever and say whoa that guy slashing and for him to be at least today in practice in alex tough potentially a guy you know has made a taxi squad. Or i guess if alex tuck maybe can't go but you know they have to do some more roster finagling in cap gymnastics and all that sort of stuff here. You know thomas. Your co appears to be in line to be the guy go. It's just kind of interesting that they were able to take a guy. This essentially off the scrap heap. You know somebody who's been hurt. You know the last couple of years and then really hasn't been able to make an impact you know and and found him signed him to contract in maybe you know are able to squeeze some productivity out of him to will see. He certainly has some jump. He's a guy that you know. His is got pedigree think he was a second round pick. He's kind of been around the nhl he's been given some chances and it never really been healthy. That's sort of the the big thing holding him back especially the last couple of years so as he saw told us the other day he he seems to be healthy. Says he's good to go. We'll see i mean. Maybe they've got a you know. I hate to maybe make this comparison. It's like a a potentially european brandon period. Here where where he comes in and if he gets a hot stick he seems like that type of guy. I guess. I don't. I don't know we'll see some osceola gopher. Yeah people are not familiar. It was kind of an under the radar signing up by the knights for kind of depth. The he's twenty eight years old Left shot winger as david with a second round. Pick back in twenty eleven and he's a guy who Pete deboer talked about today because he was filling in on the third line in practice. In place of alex tux so he was on the left. Wing cody glass and nicholas wa. Repeat divorce basically like you can't teach the skills that this guy has and he's been given quite a few..

I'm pretty Pretty excited i gotta say. I don't i don't wanna take this and do a you know in a dark place or whatever but i'll last few months of been easy especially for me. I will admit that Definitely hit a couple rough patches along the way so it's nice to have a hockey back like getting back to regular schedule. You know just kinda functioning normally. It's it's starting to feel a little bit normal again. I guess so. That's a good thing. Yeah we are so excited to have hockey back to be able to break down the early training storylines with all of you. Which is what we're going to do on this episode. I i need to ask. Dave another very specific question dave. You had a phenomenal twitter post the other day and you've got your haircut. How are you feeling now that your hair is gone and hockey is back. We'll to quote somebody on that threat. I think i went from mark stone to jonathan marchessault. The ass pretty out of control. I I had it cut in july right before training camp two point. Oh and you know just kind of let it go for a little bit and then said okay. I'm i'm going to let it really role in late. You know until hockey comes back. It's gonna be it's gonna be. We are have it all up there. you know. there's a little patch. That's missing up there. But what i do left grows pretty fast so it was like six months of outrageousness in it was time for a change but i thought everybody have fun. Fun with the picture. I i said this before. The two on on one of the radio shows that. I did though i was surprised. People were giving me a hard time about like only wearing the same outfit. I'm a cartoon or something and only have one certain panzer. He was clearly shot in the car before and then a win in to get the haircut and then shot at after so it's not like i only one pair of You know closer were what was like a zip in an apollo.
